- 2:29out there lister's we got a big night tonight.
- 2:31We've got the one and only Josh fuga coming on with us tonight.
- 2:36The 6230 to pound defensive tackle wearing the number 6 and
- 2:40hailing from Freedom, High School, in Woodbridge Virginia.
- 2:44And I'm going to go ahead and bring him on right now.
- 2:48Josh, how you doing tonight doing good, I'm doing real good
- 2:52doing real good. We really appreciate you having
- 2:54coming on tonight with us and and speaking to the listeners we
- 2:59got some guys listing live here. So but we're going to have a few
- 3:02questions for you and again, appreciate you jumping on
- 3:05tonight, of course, I appreciate HIV.
- 3:09So I just wanted to start off with this.
- 3:11You've had some kind of great games your career already at
- 3:14Virginia Tech so far, but you seem to Don't be hitting your
- 3:17stride this year. Especially three great
- 3:20performances from you in a row. The last three weeks.
- 3:24Do you feel like, everything the coaches are asking of you at
- 3:26your position, is started to click for you?
- 3:28Or is there something else contributing to that success?
- 3:31All I believe is, is more me buying in and embracing my role
- 3:37as a player on the team, knowing my strengths and my weaknesses.
- 3:42So I think me actually honing in on my skill sets and actually
- 3:46believe them. Like okay, this is what I'm good
- 3:48at. So I'm going to go ahead and put
- 3:49down display for everybody. Awesome, awesome.
- 3:53I love to hear that and I know I think you had talked about
- 3:56earlier in one other spot. I saw, were you talking about
- 4:00buying in and just the difference that kind of the
- 4:04culture that has been changed, you know, kind of since you've
- 4:07been there. So let's talk about that a
- 4:10little bit. How did you approach?
- 4:12That regime change that happened at the end of last season and
- 4:16has there been a part of that change that has had an impact on
- 4:19your preparation or your On the field.
- 4:22The most I really embrace the change by.
- 4:28I knew how to change. What's going to be the severity
- 4:33of the change. But what I did is like I knew I
- 4:37wasn't going to leave or not like that.
- 4:38I had no intentions of leaving first and foremost.
- 4:41So I knew that if I want to become who I am right now, I got
- 4:46to work harder, so there's more weight room or more film study
- 4:50all that. And the change that actually
- 4:53happened this year. I think he's actually pretty
- 4:56good because one thing that this coaching staff bought into their
- 5:00mindset was mainly competing and everything we do on and off the
- 5:05field. And I believe that what that
- 5:07change in that mindset that they instilled in US was pretty
- 5:11pretty good. We really needed that as a team,
- 5:16it may not be showing it right now but we are really competed
- 5:18on and off the field because what we do off the field
- 5:21correlation Do on the fields. Yeah it sounds like you.
- 5:25As soon as you saw that coming you kind of double down on your
- 5:27approach and I do your preparation and stuff like that.
- 5:30Yes, sir. Awesome awesome.
- 5:33And, you know, speaking of that you kind of you've been a
- 5:36rotational or starting player for the Hokies for three years.
- 5:38Now, what's been the biggest difference for you?
- 5:41From a schematic perspective? In coach Brian?
- 5:45Coach Marv system compared to your first two seasons in Justin
- 5:49Hamilton's defense. I think the schematically
- 5:54fogging is allowing allowing the, the front for didn't
- 6:00actually eat more like they're good.
- 6:03They're going to put us in position to make plays, okay?
- 6:07So I say they're going to do their best to make sure that
- 6:10we're doing that. We are here to for this specific
- 6:15play and it's up to us to actually execute that play and
- 6:18make the plays when it comes to us you know.
- 6:21You got to stay in the framework and not do too much and I
- 6:25believe that we're doing that and I believe that's the whole
- 6:28the change of everything from the other staff to this stuff.
- 6:33Okay. So a little bit more Controlled
- 6:34Chaos. Yeah.
- 6:37Okay. Okay.
- 6:38I like that. I like that.
- 6:40And kind of speaking of that I know we talked a little bit off
- 6:43are before you jumped on here. I know we're still early in the
- 6:45bye week but what has been the emphasis from coach Pride this
- 6:50week so far as it. Been more NC State prep type
- 6:53stuff. Since you've got the Thursday
- 6:54night or early coming next week, or is it been more about the
- 6:57scheme in the technique and trying to polish some things
- 7:00from the first half of the season?
- 7:03I believe like his message, from what I've what I've gotten is
- 7:08what can you do individually? To better this team as an old,
- 7:14like I said, in other interviews is that even though what we're
- 7:19going through, may not be all rainbows and sunshine this week,
- 7:24could have been a better time for us to have a Bible.
- 7:27Gives us opportunity to really reflect on what's going on as a
- 7:32team as a program and also as individually as a player.
- 7:37So I think it's a perfect time for about So we can really
- 7:42actually take strives and for the next half of the season.
- 7:46Yeah. It's it does seem like it's
- 7:47coming at a good time. I think, you know, you guys have
- 7:50seen had some good games, had some areas where you feel like
- 7:53you could, you know, have improved trying to put the whole
- 7:57picture together. I know price talked a lot about
- 7:59complementary football, kind of everybody.
- 8:01Rowing in the same direction at the same time, right?
- 8:04And I, you know, as you said I think it's a good time for a bye
- 8:07week. You can start maybe putting some
- 8:08of those pieces together, for sure.
- 8:10Yeah, let me ask this. So you came in Virginia Tech
- 8:15already kind of One level size at 61 300.
- 8:22What? Components of the strength and
- 8:23conditioning program have helped the most in your progression on
- 8:27the field since you've been in Blacksburg I'll say the the
- 8:33conditioner. Yeah so when I first came here
- 8:372019 I'll never forget I graduated high school, June 9th
- 8:43of that year and then June 10 was already like Like my report
- 8:47day? No, I actually graduated June,
- 8:49June 1st and my report day was June 10 so quick turn around.
- 8:54Turn around, well, coming in. I remember five o'clock in the
- 8:59morning, we had to put our cleats on and get on the
- 9:02Baseline that we had to run. This thing called 300-yard,
- 9:05Shadows, that steady back, 50 back and 50 back for the whole
- 9:09week straight. I didn't make not one of my
- 9:10times so I'm almost who it is. Then after, you know, gassed
- 9:15out. It's hard to make my times and
- 9:19it's embarrassing. Like to be honest embarrassing
- 9:21like you got the class that came in with you like looking at you
- 9:25like you're like he's not ready and I kid you not after that.
- 9:28Very first week God did the whole shuttles till that point I
- 9:32never miss a time I'm either one of the top guys finishing and
- 9:37all that. So it's really me embracing
- 9:40that. Okay, this is what it is to take
- 9:43to play at this level. I got that be able to Be playing
- 9:4850 plays or whatever it is. I got to be strong.
- 9:50So it's just me buying in and the conditioning and all the
- 9:54strength that that, that, that they implemented.
- 9:57Yeah, now I can definitely commiserate with that a little
- 10:01bit. I played III back in the day and
- 10:04I remember getting there. And, you know, the first thing
- 10:06they're doing is the conditioning test.
- 10:08And I was like, oh, okay, this is this different level of
- 10:13conditioning, than what we were doing, you know, back in high
- 10:16school and the first, first week was rough.
- 10:19I definitely missed about two or three the times that first week.
- 10:22You know what? You got to get your feet under
- 10:24your little bit. You're like, alright Ike, if you
- 10:26push through a little More you start just getting under the
- 10:29time and then you can start building off that for sure.
- 10:32Yeah, yeah. All right, so let me ask this
- 10:38because little bit back on the on the strength and conditioning
- 10:41stuff. Since you've been in Blacksburg
- 10:44anytime we see those offseason workout videos.
- 10:47I tell my buddy Curtis does the show with me?
- 10:50And I've said it on here before you've got the best Squad face
- 10:55on the team by far. It's not even close man.
- 11:01But let me ask the question from this perspective does make him
- 11:04Squat Friday, almost like these big weekly event helped the team
- 11:08push through leg day each week because I know that's always
- 11:11like the the toughest day to get through.
- 11:14Yeah, that doesn't know about it is its opposite day to get
- 11:17through. But I think actually actually
- 11:20benefits us because we're all were all there once a week and
- 11:26we're all there, watch it, one guy at a time so push the weight
- 11:30push his Max. And that just that bills that
- 11:34Team chemistry that team camaraderie that look I got your
- 11:37back. If you do this for one time, you
- 11:40know. And and it gives that person
- 11:42that confidence whoever's under that squat bar below.
- 11:44Okay, everybody watching me. I'm not gonna miss low but I
- 11:48know that they got me and I'm gonna do my best to get this one
- 11:52rep. So if it helps build that team,
- 11:55camaraderie in that team chemistry for real, I will throw
- 12:01this on here boy, Vic, Virginia, Tech Les.
- 12:04He said, tell my guy figure, he's got got a fan and Dwight
- 12:08Vic, and freedom is serious this year.
- 12:10Just a, yes, sir, I know y'all. So, let's ask this, you've been
- 12:28playing under JC price. Now, for two seasons, we're
- 12:32seeing his impact a lot more on the line this year.
- 12:36Not just from, you know, the director of the wreck stuff with
- 12:38the coaching, but a lot of the culture type stuff.
- 12:41Lunch pail has bagged all collar.
- 12:43What does it mean to you to play for a coach to kind of help
- 12:46build the foundation and the culture?
- 12:49The program that you're now part of the coast pies and he's a God
- 12:56that embodies our what Virginia Tech is.
- 12:59So this is actually like his first time like took the two
- 13:03years he been here. Is his first time actually
- 13:04gained control of them. All four guys, man, this is so
- 13:09like last year we had built a link, so we would all be under
- 13:13him and then close power coach, the ends.
- 13:17But this is his first time I actually get in the hole.
- 13:19Whole deal on as a whole. And I'm telling you, like, he
- 13:23what he teaches at how he coaches, it's a different style
- 13:27of coaching I've ever seen. He's actually passionate, he's
- 13:31very passionate. What he does the dog mentality
- 13:34dead, the front for got to have every game, no matter what it
- 13:38is, like, you gonna, you gotta play like this in order to be
- 13:42successful, and he does a very great job, trying to instill
- 13:47that that mindset. That Now, we got to have every
- 13:50game and everything that we do in life just outside of football
- 13:54and I'm sorry plan to close price is actually a blessing for
- 13:57me. That's also and we saw it.
- 14:00I mean, anytime he's in front of the camera.
- 14:03Anytime he's on the bike. I mean, you can't, you feel it?
- 14:05And we saw when we, I mean me and Curtis are fans from way,
- 14:09back in the in the mid-90s when Coach Price was still was still
- 14:15a Virginia Tech as a player. So we kind of go back that far
- 14:19and we cut remember that mentality that he had as a
- 14:22player and it's awesome to hear that he's bringing that to
- 14:26y'all's meeting room deals position Roop and you know
- 14:30seeing every time he gets in front of the mic especially you
- 14:33know, after UVA last year. That was an emotional moment for
- 14:37him, man. So it's awesome that he brings
- 14:39that same energy to practice to meetings and stuff like that.
- 14:44Yeah, every day every day. Awesome.
- 14:47Well, you know, we know, Great of an environment Lane stadium,
- 14:52is to experience a college football game.
- 14:56And but I'm curious from your perspective, what are some other
- 15:00stadiums that you played at during your time with the Hokies
- 15:03that have also kind of stood out for you as having that type of
- 15:05electric atmosphere? I'll say for me personally, was
- 15:09West Virginia last year. It was electrifying, you really
- 15:15couldn't hear nothing, as soon as you got out.
- 15:18It was a pretty cool environment.
- 15:19Moment. But I will say Lane, stadium is
- 15:22top, top notch, no, nothing being Stadium, wasn't filled.
- 15:26So, but for me personally, I'll say West Virginia.
- 15:30Last year was pretty all rocking.
- 15:34Was it kind of the combination of the the Rivalry, the the fans
- 15:38just kind of little bit of everything that was contributing
- 15:40to that. Oh yeah, I say likes to pull it
- 15:43pulling up. Shut up to the stadium and sell
- 15:46like, you can see like you feel that the whyville And everything
- 15:50that this game that game meant like we're not just trying to
- 15:54win the game like we're trying to compete for trophies and
- 15:57trophy game. Yeah, like as soon as you get to
- 16:00the stadium, you'll feel that atmosphere That's awesome.
- 16:04Yeah that that's one of the stadiums that I would like to
- 16:07check out. I've not been there.
- 16:10You know when when I was coming to games early earlier in my
- 16:15life, when I was a college student that was when West
- 16:19Virginia was known for some of that dirty stuff that people
- 16:22were talking about. Like, oh yeah, throw in
- 16:24batteries and you know, all that stuff at game.
- 16:26So you know some people tried to as far as visiting fans, tried
- 16:30to stay away from that atmosphere but you know I've
- 16:33heard. Late, it's a lot more more tame,
- 16:36but still still pretty raucous. In terms of the noise, they make
- 16:39in the passion that they bring to the stadium.
- 16:43So, let's ask this, this little more fun question for you in the
- 16:48deal. I room.
- 16:48You got a lot of different personalities, a lot of back
- 16:50different backgrounds. What's the big kind of off the
- 16:54clock, like competition or thing that you guys do, kind of as a
- 16:59group as a video games, is it pick up Hoops?
- 17:02You know, what kind of things do?
- 17:03Y'all do off the clock? Off the clock, I will, I would
- 17:09say that it is mainly basketball, I pick up so like
- 17:14coach prize will have, was sometime come to his house, but
- 17:17just grub and just fellowship and I say, he has a basketball
- 17:21hoop and I'll tell you as soon as you get there, somebody got a
- 17:24basketball. And where are you trying to play
- 17:2521 or King of the course? Something?
- 17:29Like weird. It doesn't matter because
- 17:32possibly like, there's no Duncan.
- 17:34But, you know, some guys will try to dunk here.
- 17:36How about we try to compete regardless?
- 17:38So I say like basketball, something like that.
- 17:41Okay, he's right. He's trying to protect his hoop,
- 17:43right? You don't want job, bringing the
- 17:44hotel right now. You're not.
- 17:46He doesn't get that. He stays out the way where
- 17:48everybody else is out there playing playing with the
- 17:51basketball, or some guys will be playing pool or something like
- 17:54that. Oh nice.
- 17:55Okay, okay, good stuff. Man, I figured is Hoops.
- 18:00Usually everybody that comes in here, it's always Hoops for so,
- 18:05you know, 21 was are Game back in the day.
- 18:07So, I'm glad that that's carrying it through for some of
- 18:10the d-line group. Now, to, all right?
- 18:12So last question before I let you go tonight.
- 18:17Yeah, we always ask this when we have players on former players?
- 18:21What's the go to Food Spot for you?
- 18:23In Blacksburg? Go to and I don't have anything.
- 18:34I would say, I'll say Jose. Okay, who's the breakfast diner?
- 18:39Yeah, yeah. That that little that little
- 18:43spot you know, the little coffee shop I like to refer to as but
- 18:48that and got some good food over there.
- 18:50Yeah they do have some good food.
- 18:52You're the first person I think that said Jose in a while so I
- 18:57think it's underrated to to a point.
- 18:59But I mean anybody anybody that's been there especially
- 19:02certain times a day They know what's up?
- 19:07No doubt. Well I appreciate you jumping on
- 19:10with me tonight. Sorry you didn't get to meet my
- 19:14partner in crime there. Curtis feeling under the weather
- 19:17but we appreciate the time and if there's anything you want to
- 19:21plug real quick, go ahead. Appreciate everybody tuning in
- 19:26and be ready for us next week. Thursday ESPN Prime sign against
- 19:31NC State. Go Hoagies.
- 19:34There we go. And that's Josh fuga.
- 19:37Appreciate your time. You have a good night.
- 19:39Appreciate you, too. We are now back and it
- 19:47automatically, after that interview it makes me want to we
- 19:50have to invite you as fuga back next season for interview with
- 19:53some point time since I didn't get a chance to miss him and
- 19:56then discuss, how many the question?
- 19:59Now the question that we had them on once with Joe's Diner is
- 20:03not only okay what's his go to but how many because obviously
- 20:07you know Joe's Diner, huge breakfast all that good stuff
- 20:11like would it be like you know You know, three small, Joe's
- 20:15three. Big Joe's mean how much is job
- 20:19with? What's the go to order?
- 20:20Let's go to water and how much it's like the new Taco Bell.
- 20:24It's 28 dollar challenge 2828, Taco Bell and we were like, oh
- 20:30my God, you're inside, you're going for a family of four, what
- 20:34are you doing? What are you doing?
- 20:37But anyway, it was great. That he came on last night.
- 20:40We run also view to get a chance to interview him.
- 20:43I'm surprised you didn't get more technical about what would
- 20:46be happening if you were God? He was d-tackle, haha, maybe
- 20:50next time, but maybe next time, maybe they're also having Josh
- 20:54own Josh. Again we appreciate you coming
- 20:56on last night if you're listening tonight.
- 20:58All right. Well let's flip it, Brian.
- 20:59Let's get into this Miami recap and you know, Hokies fall 2014
- 21:04and I'm going to start right off with the offense because
- 21:07probably after playing their best game of the year against
- 21:10Pitt, excluding really much. Each the laughs has of the
- 21:14fourth quarter. It was literally the worst game
- 21:16we've seen from this offense for 3/4 now.
- 21:19I mean, the first three quarters.
- 21:22I mean, I'm not even gonna take the first series that with the
- 21:25big run by Malachi to open it in the big pass by Daquan that he
- 21:28fumbled and games territory. But before the fourth quarter
- 21:33after that fumble, they crossed the Midfield one time and I
- 21:39didn't get to see. I didn't see any of the game
- 21:40except the condensed version, which I watched three times.
- 21:43Condensed versions are great, but they are what they are, but
- 21:48I'm following them, my phone at baseball.
- 21:50The second half, I listen to Bill, and Michael on the radio,
- 21:53it's awesome to hear them. Just to say that whether it's a
- 21:56losing effort or not. But Brian, you did get to see
- 21:58the games. Let's talk about the play calls
- 22:00and what's going on there was it play calls or even bad
- 22:04situation? What was the, what was the
- 22:05issue? It kind of felt like, you know,
- 22:09we had the big miscue in the first drive after a couple pump,
- 22:12promising plays. As you know, we saw a couple new
- 22:15things out the gate, you know, we had an outside Zone on that
- 22:19run by Malachi, you know, then we got Daquan involved early in
- 22:25the game and then you have the fumble and then it felt like,
- 22:29very, very vanilla, very reserved, in terms, of trying to
- 22:33attack them outside on the perimeter, which is where we've
- 22:38had a lot of success with the running game, and also kind of
- 22:41through the air with intermedia game.
- 22:43We burn them with two plays like that and then we really don't
- 22:46kind of go back to that for a long time and when we do you
- 22:50know it's telegraphed. It's stuff that we kind of we're
- 22:54showing what's coming. So you know what we got to do is
- 22:56get more frequent counters, and wrinkles off of those
- 22:59bread-and-butter plays. So we can keep the defense
- 23:02guessing a little bit more because it seemed like they were
- 23:05key in a lot on those quick screens to the tight end.
- 23:08They were key in a lot on those hours things.
- 23:13Like that and they were able to kind of get us kind of stymied a
- 23:18little bit before we go to get upfield and get our shoulders
- 23:21square and kind of get that forward momentum in the in the
- 23:23offense. And that's just going to be one
- 23:26of those things where you got to bake be quicker and adjusting in
- 23:30the game, kind of mid-flow. When you see, okay, well, you
- 23:34know, we did, we didn't do this well.
- 23:37So you get a little trigger shot with that and then all of a
- 23:39sudden, your bread and butter is not working and you don't adjust
- 23:43From that and try to find something else.
- 23:45That's going to get you back into that Rhythm because we
- 23:47really didn't find an offensive Rhythm until the fourth quarter.
- 23:50Well how does it know offensive play called or do that though?
- 23:52Because you have that first where you run to Great plays and
- 23:56unfortunately a fumble happens and then you get gunshot and you
- 23:59get triggered for an offensive coordinator.
- 24:03Like you can't live like that because you can't live at the
- 24:05bread butter doesn't work. And obviously those first two
- 24:08plays with something different and getting a young player
- 24:10involved early. So the game plan, Lan was there
- 24:14but it was just like completely pulled back.
- 24:16Like hold the horses. Whoa, we can't keep making
- 24:18mistakes like this, what is it? Offensive play caller.
- 24:20Have to do to get away from that and just say, no, clearly these
- 24:25two plays worked in. We if not for a fumble, we would
- 24:29have been on the plus 35 and they were already on their heels
- 24:34to plays into the game. So I'll throw a caveat out
- 24:36there. You know, it's a delicate
- 24:38balance right now because, you know we've talked about it this
- 24:42team in. Terms of overall Talent overall
- 24:44depth is not good enough to make a lot of mistakes.
- 24:50And then still win a game. So now you've got a mistake
- 24:54early on but then you let that mistake feed over into other
- 25:00things even though you know you're playing more
- 25:03conservative. But you're playing on those not
- 25:05to not to lose the game now and we can't pray like that.
- 25:11Can't play like that. We've got to, we've got to find
- 25:14the line between making sure we don't make those dumb mistakes,
- 25:18whether it's penalties, whether it's Turnovers, but not getting
- 25:23so gunshot that we're not anything.
- 25:27All right, well maybe it's what the head man said and I know you
- 25:30listened to it a little later after the game and you felt like
- 25:34it was both sides, but printer, I called out how we're running.
- 25:37Personnel after me seeing it. And after what the offense did
- 25:41to me, it felt like, he was going right after the offense,
- 25:43may be calling out, Tyler bowling a little bit, maybe not.
- 25:46But basically talking about we cannot be vanilla as a team.
- 25:50So the first thing you said, not have another.
- 25:52You can't even though team, you're not that good enough, but
- 25:55we must play the right players. The most interesting one I heard
- 25:59was right near the end of that snippet and he talked about, we
- 26:01need the best players on the field at all times.
- 26:05Even if that includes having two running backs on the field at
- 26:08the same time, when you hear that and I know, as we get over
- 26:12the defense, we can see what you think he meant by on that side
- 26:15of the ball because he did leave it open-ended where you could
- 26:17say, either side of the ball. But when you hear that and think
- 26:19offensive ly would have potentially if you think we see
- 26:22NC State in going forward. Yeah.
- 26:26I mean I think It's, you know, it's a lot of things and he
- 26:28mentioned, he mentioned the running back specifically, and
- 26:33when I'm thinking of the running backs, I'm thinking of that
- 26:36third down call where you had Holston out in the flat and it's
- 26:43a, it's a laser, it's still a catchable, ball hosting.
- 26:47Can't handle it. If you have, you know, one of
- 26:50your other two running backs out there, you got Malachi Thomas
- 26:53out there. You got Keshawn King out.
- 26:57Is that ball handled? Does do you get a catch and run
- 27:00for another you know, 10 or 12 yards there to put you in
- 27:04scoring range right there. Versus have a pun on the next
- 27:07play, maybe. And, you know, I think we're a
- 27:12little too deep or we're still filling this out.
- 27:14I know, Malachi Thomas has just been back for two games at this
- 27:18point, but I think we kind of know what we have with the
- 27:22strength of Holston is and is not at this point.
- 27:26And unless he's staying in there to block.
- 27:32It's probably not a good play for him.
- 27:35I mean, just just being honest, it's probably not a good play
- 27:37for him. All right.
- 27:42What about the? I think you just you got into
- 27:44about why? It shouldn't be vanilla and I
- 27:46think you've got to find the right balance, but I think who
- 27:49we are as a team. There's not much bread and
- 27:52butter you have none. You have to be unique.
- 27:55You have to take shots. Yeah, we gotta get creative for
- 27:58sure. We got to get creative with with
- 28:00how we're getting the guys with football.
- 28:02You want to have bread, buddy? You want to have those plays?
- 28:04You can lean on when things get a little tight, but at the same
- 28:09time you've got to be able to throw wrinkles because if the
- 28:12other teams playing tight and their key in on what you're
- 28:14doing you got to throw them something different and can't
- 28:19just hope that they're going to make a mistake and not.
- 28:21Were they need to be every time. It's almost like if you can take
- 28:25away the vanilla look potentially doing some unique
- 28:28things will open up the things we've done.
- 28:31Well maybe not exponentially like think that certain run
- 28:34plays, it haven't went for seven to carry that's going for two
- 28:38but if you open it up just a little maybe it goes 45 because
- 28:41until you've got them thinking versus them read reacting.
- 28:45Yeah, let me give an example. So you know, we've run that
- 28:49quick screen to the tight end a lot.
- 28:51Got ya, a lot of times we run it out of regular trips, it's going
- 28:57to Gallo from the wing. We saw a bunch trips Bunch with
- 29:02with Daquan in there where Lofton and Gallo widen out and
- 29:08get the blocks. And that one had a lot of.
- 29:11That was the one that got the the first down, in the fourth
- 29:15quarter. We're Daquan called it got about
- 29:17eight and then fought for the last two to get the first down.
- 29:21Those little wrinkles like that little adjustments.
- 29:24It doesn't have to be anything major.
- 29:26You can still essentially call the same game, but just give it
- 29:30a different look. So they can't key pre-snap on
- 29:34what you're trying to do. All right, well let's flip and
- 29:39let's talk about the next it I think disappointed everybody
- 29:44especially after we looked versus pit and that's the
- 29:47offensive line Play. I Think Clearly the worst
- 29:50overall game for this units. In Saudi you they allowed seven
- 29:54sacks. And I know that's a good.
- 29:56Miami front. The Run game was probably about
- 29:59a yard per carry less than what we wanted to be Braun.
- 30:02We were 2.6 of carry, you said, if we were at 34 like 110 yards,
- 30:08Probably had a better chance at one yard more.
- 30:12That's roughly where we are at 30 carry.
- 30:14So you obviously got in the film room and did some breakdowns of
- 30:19me. What were the issues there?
- 30:23It was definitely the worst. The overall game for that
- 30:25offensive line since probably ODU just you know the pass game
- 30:32kind of was what it was. The communication was off, it
- 30:36seemed There wasn't, they did a lot with delay blitzes, that
- 30:41really threw off the, the communication, and kind of the
- 30:45switching that the offensive line needs to do to kind of keep
- 30:48that Shore. And you couple that with the Run
- 30:51game, where we weren't getting a ton of movement between the
- 30:55tackles especially we had to generate a lot of, are you merge
- 30:58with our quarterback this week probably a little bit more than
- 31:01I think we're comfortable with weeks week for sure.
- 31:05I like Wells, running more. Um, I think that that's a
- 31:09positive in terms of generating, some additional offense but you
- 31:14don't want to get in a situation where you're having to have your
- 31:17quarterback be the leading rusher for your team.
- 31:20We've seen that song and dance before, we don't want to get
- 31:24back to that. Now we definitely don't want to
- 31:26get back to that. So if you have a one-game here
- 31:29there where your quarterback breaks a couple long ones and
- 31:31he's the leading rusher for one game.
- 31:34Fine. You don't want him to go
- 31:36week-to-week being And you know, getting all about the same
- 31:39number of carriers as your lead back for you know, handful more
- 31:42yards, that's not what you want. So the offensive line definitely
- 31:49needs to figure some things out whether that is switching around
- 31:54Personnel. It looked like, you know, we
- 31:57started the game a lot with a lot of Jesse Hanson, we kind of
- 32:00closed it with a little bit more, Braylon more there at the
- 32:03end. You know, you'd like to see and
- 32:06hopefully, at some point we get to A situation where we're
- 32:09comfortable getting Xavier chaplain on the field.
- 32:12A lot more and Parker Clements maybe off the field a lot more.
- 32:20That I think that would, that would help at least we'd know we
- 32:22have. And we can get some Reps for a
- 32:23guy that we know is going to have to play a pretty big role
- 32:26for us come next season. Absolutely, huge role.
- 32:29And you mentioned Grant, Wells legs.
- 32:31I mean, let's talk about what we saw Saturday on that.
- 32:33I mean, he proved he's not a statute now, is he tie rod or
- 32:38any of those guys know? But by proven that you hear
- 32:41Pride talking post game, it can be expanded.
- 32:44And what I hear that expanded knowing this offense, know what
- 32:47you explain to me. Or read option elements more RPO
- 32:52elements. And and then it kind of goes
- 32:54back to what we talked about, right?
- 32:55Personnel saying if you're using a little bit of the RPO, your
- 32:59lose a little bit of the read option, along with his just
- 33:02scrambling ability, it's going to change defensive looks it's
- 33:05going to probably make things easier for the line and it's
- 33:08going to make some passes easier for him.
- 33:11Yeah. I mean we've been running some
- 33:13of the read option at this point.
- 33:16We've been running some of the RPO at this point.
- 33:20It hasn't been as heavy emphasis, as I thought it was
- 33:24going to be before the season, but I think some of that is a
- 33:28lot of the other base stuff isn't as developed and as ready
- 33:32as they wanted to be. So they're not throwing as many
- 33:34of these wrinkles out there, but I think we've gotten to a point.
- 33:37Now, where we're getting stymie to a point where we got to try
- 33:41something different something. In something that's already kind
- 33:44of in the Playbook that we can just kind of integrate a little
- 33:48bit deeper in the game plan. Week to week.
- 33:52And I think that's where the RPO in war zone comes into play.
- 33:56We saw a couple quarterback. We saw a counter called me.
- 34:03Yeah, we saw we've seen the drawers all year on Long plays
- 34:08which a couple times Saturday actually made up significant
- 34:11yardage and that's fine. And I mean he still isn't
- 34:17running at a point like even Saturday.
- 34:19I mean he ran 16 times Which is clearly the highest number that
- 34:25he's ran all season and like you said, I don't want him to have
- 34:30to do that all the time. I would like him to be, in the
- 34:338, to 10 range, just more effective with the with those
- 34:37design runs or would you lose your coming off of reads or the
- 34:42RPO? I mean we can go back and look
- 34:44at the tape and kind of decide how many were designs, how many
- 34:47were him just scrambling? Because if you're saying in this
- 34:50safety wrench 16 times, but if eight were designs at Scrambles
- 34:54then then we're probably okay. I think what you're saying is
- 34:57designed room, you don't want to see them.
- 34:59Specifically saying this is his play verse.
- 35:02Yeah I don't want to say 12 plus times a game, we're running our
- 35:05quarterback in the design fashion.
- 35:07But if you're saying it's 10 designs and then you've got in
- 35:11his head, you hit 12 because of this concept.
- 35:14These are you know, we're running double vertibird post.
- 35:17We're running people off. If there is a lane, don't try to
- 35:21get you. The third re you probably Have 5
- 35:23to 10 yards of space where you do have enough legs to get us
- 35:28positive yardage versus taking a sack.
- 35:30Yeah I mean I'd like to see maybe four or five where you
- 35:35know it's it's Grant all the way he's not reading he it's not our
- 35:40po. It's not Zone it's just grants
- 35:44running the ball display and I like to see another probably 5
- 35:49to 6 where he has the option to run.
- 35:55And maybe even a few more than the, but I wouldn't go much
- 35:58heavier than that right now. But there's but there's things
- 36:02that we can do kind of off of that, that will get take a
- 36:06little more pressure off of him. And I'm hoping that we can do
- 36:09some more creative things that are running.
- 36:10A my no Prime Mansion you know to backfield sets.
- 36:14You know, you got a guy like King that we can split a guy
- 36:16like chance black that you can split out.
- 36:19Have you managed of it? Yeah, take advantage of it.
- 36:22Create some mismatches. Create some different looks for
- 36:26the defense. Think about it.
- 36:28Like, catch them misalign. I mean, there's so many things
- 36:31you can do with with those different Personnel that might
- 36:33catch the defense off guard there.
- 36:35Well, think about an RPO pop skirt or a pop swing pass.
- 36:38Where if you've got King and Malachi in the backfield and
- 36:41you're reading hard and just let King run to the flat, Are you
- 36:45immediately going to be avoiding somebody like a linebacker or
- 36:48safety if you're doing that? Absolutely because if they
- 36:52decide to stay in the boxing Grant read that you're talking
- 36:55about going to a flat where now if the wide outs are upfield and
- 36:59blocking it could be a lot of yards and what does that do the
- 37:04next time you immediately see the linebacker change their
- 37:07Direction, they don't bite in on the run and then you might have
- 37:10numbers inside the box but we could get deeper into that.
- 37:13And I'm like, yeah. Yeah.
- 37:15I'll tell you another thing. I like to see, we've run a lot
- 37:17of those quick screens to the tide in and quick screens to the
- 37:19running back. When we're in shotgun, I'd like
- 37:23to see maybe something where you either run a wheel off of that
- 37:28or you know you're looking you're showing that and then
- 37:32throwing back, throw that into the ocean to the opposite side
- 37:37of where you're seeing that most you right now.
- 37:38They're jumping that every time they're jumping it.
- 37:42And we got to start burning them a little bit when they're taking
- 37:47those risks and jumping that you know, something that they've
- 37:49seen on tape a lot at this point.
- 37:51Absolutely. All right, well I think I'm
- 37:53gonna hit one more piece here. I think as we go into next year
- 37:57talking about we've talked a lot about Thomas and we talked to
- 38:00right? And we saw Lofton, make a hell
- 38:02of a catch on Saturday in Braylon more getting one more
- 38:05play time. I think the young players on the
- 38:07offense you've got a foundation, they're not all right.
- 38:12Young, they're going to be here, at least two to three more
- 38:14seasons, roughly mom. And with guys like Caleb Smith,
- 38:19even Wells coming back next year.
- 38:21If they find the Parker Clements of 2021 and bring him back,
- 38:26significantly, help, I'm still trying to figure out what's
- 38:30happened to him and I think I have a feeling in the offseason.
- 38:33You're going to be pulling up 2021 tape and 2022 tape of him
- 38:35and be like, what's the difference?
- 38:36But how does it make you feel foundationally for the next
- 38:40couple Seasons? No.
- 38:41Knowing the guys who were showing out the most right now,
- 38:45are some of the youngest in that room.
- 38:48Yeah, a lot of the young players on offense of definitely stepped
- 38:51up, you know, we talked about right, and Thomas in particular,
- 38:55still really early into their careers, you know, Loft and I
- 38:58know he had the big drop, but, you know, I think he's coming
- 39:02along. Hopefully, we can, we can get
- 39:05some, some more consistency with his hands.
- 39:10He met, he catches the hard ones, man.
- 39:12He does. The degree of difficulty, is up.
- 39:15He bring those in, he made that Catch this past week against
- 39:20Miami. He made that big where he
- 39:23climbed the ladder and brought it down against piss.
- 39:26So I mean, he makes those high high degree of difficulty
- 39:29catches, we just got to get him to bring in those routine.
- 39:33Ones with greater routine, right?
- 39:36I don't percent then more, I think just getting more
- 39:40consistent snaps maybe even getting a start here as the
- 39:44season goes along, I think would be good for his maturity.
- 39:48Me and coming along in the offense.
- 39:51Absolutely. All right, let's flip over to
- 39:53the defense side of the ball now.
- 39:55Brian. Let's first of all, we welcome
- 39:57back to players to on Garbutt who had missed the pit game, who
- 40:01had a really big day with a sack and a half three.
- 40:04Tackles for loss five. Total tackles also Allen Tisdale
- 40:08back Allen, Tisdale with nine tackles second, Auntie mahina,
- 40:11Jalen strowman. And I think we really saw it
- 40:16Shore up the defense and again, address even more that That this
- 40:21is a good defense. Is it great note but it is a
- 40:24good defense that you know. Brian if I told you, you know,
- 40:28eight days ago on Wednesday, night on Tuesday night.
- 40:31Brian. We're going to leave you.
- 40:32We're going to hold them to 20. Are you going to take it?
- 40:36I take it all day, man. If you said that we were only
- 40:39going to allow 20 points in that game.
- 40:41I said there's at least a 60% chance, we win that game.
- 40:44And if the offense and showed a little bit more life there in,
- 40:47probably been about a 60% chance, we would have won that
- 40:49game so you know, I'm fine with the output of spec.
- 40:54I'm really impressed. With the adjustments that we saw
- 40:59at have time because almost everything that we did at
- 41:05halftime took away, what they were doing, well, in the first
- 41:10half. And I mean, the biggest one was
- 41:15giving us a whole lot more of monster d'Alene.
- 41:21We got a whole lot more of, we got a got a lot more cam Johnson
- 41:25to, but we got a whole lot of the freshmen, cornerbacks got
- 41:29some run in the second half and they showed out and they showed
- 41:33out consistently and in particular delaying went up
- 41:38there and was you know, High pointing balls, getting it
- 41:42getting some some some deflections and I mean he was
- 41:46like the third-year player. Yeah, look like the third-year
- 41:49player on Saturday at the of the condensed and highlight.
- 41:51So I'll say this, he looked eerily like when we got Kendall
- 41:59Fuller on the field as a true freshman.
- 42:01Okay. Yeah.
- 42:04All right. Now don't get me wrong.
- 42:06The defense, have some errors in the first have absolutely but
- 42:11they if somebody said well it would have been a blowout.
- 42:14Should have been a blow out. My knee took the foot off the
- 42:17pedal. No, Miami could not run the
- 42:19ball. That's why I could run the whole
- 42:22game. I mean, dang, they couldn't run.
- 42:23Yeah, and I mean, you're talking about think about this, you
- 42:27know, Miami. They had five runs or more of
- 42:31nine yards or 72 yards. Longest one was 15 the rest of
- 42:36the game they have 35 on like 23, they were lower than us for
- 42:43those 23 and I mean I think having Tisdale back was big on
- 42:48that and I think having Corbett back was big on that.
- 42:51When you looked at some of the tapes, how much better will it
- 42:53run fits? Especially with garbett and
- 42:55Tisdale bad? Definitely more consistent.
- 42:58There were still a couple that weren't quite what you want but
- 43:02we didn't we didn't they didn't have a running back that could
- 43:05burn us and when they had that like Pride was talking about a
- 43:09lot of the guys in the secondary, we're taking some
- 43:11better angles at helping clean that up.
- 43:15So you didn't see see the big gains.
- 43:17And I know we spoke last week when we talked about Miami, you
- 43:20know, they get They don't get to the second level and completely
- 43:22towards you. Like pit does pits very much if
- 43:26you get them. In the first three or five
- 43:29yards, they're not going to do very much.
- 43:31If you let them get past five and you have put a body on them,
- 43:35you're in fucking trouble and Amy is not that at the running
- 43:39back position and we saw it and you know, we were able to keep
- 43:44them in. Check now pass defensible
- 43:48different story. I think it's showing every week
- 43:52how much were missing? Dorian, strong and him not
- 43:54coming. Back this week I'm wondering if
- 43:57If he's back against NC State and again, it sort of hurts the
- 44:02whole rotation, it's one reason Jalen Stroman had a ton of
- 44:05tackles, he was playing the free spot a lot.
- 44:08And Brianna Marie is probably the most frustrating players
- 44:12right now because there are times where you look at his tape
- 44:15and it's like he does everything perfect and it's great.
- 44:18And then there's some of those plays like on some of the Miami
- 44:22early drives where it's just that passing the back of the end
- 44:26zone. Maybe he got picked or
- 44:28something, but it looked like. He'd almost given up on catching
- 44:31that whiteout. Yeah.
- 44:33And maybe he got picked TV angles.
- 44:37You got to get all 22s where you can see on the back half, but it
- 44:40was like, he almost gave up on that play.
- 44:41And if he gives up on that play it's like maybe that's why we
- 44:44saw in the second half of listen, you can't give up on a
- 44:49plate, weird things happen in football and I hope that's not
- 44:53the case. I just hope it was one of those
- 44:54weird things where he tripped or stumbled or but, you know, I'll
- 45:01say this. So, you know, I appreciate what?
- 45:07What Briana Murray brings to the table.
- 45:09He's got some decent skills, but I saw enough In Miami where he
- 45:17doesn't need to be the first guy out in.
- 45:19Okay. Less unless unless there's two
- 45:22or three corners out of that game for injuries, he doesn't
- 45:25need to be the first guy. And we've talked about it
- 45:32before, we're comfortable with him as, as a guy were you can
- 45:36throw in for a series here or series there to give a guy a
- 45:40blow that needs a blow and as we're seeing having to lean on
- 45:46him for significant portions of a game, it's been a struggle.
- 45:52It's been very up and down and that's against Miami, that's
- 45:56being kind. So, I mean it's different.
- 46:00It's difficult to watch is it's hard to say that about a guy.
- 46:04That's a, you know, a veteran, that's done.
- 46:06Some good things for your team and his time here.
- 46:08But I'm going with the two freshmen before I want to see.
- 46:14Breanna Murray on the field again and write something else
- 46:19that happened. Mr. Peeples gets ejected for
- 46:21targeting and you, I think you texted me because I was there,
- 46:27and I saw some type of mine who was Was it and you're like Missy
- 46:29I was like I'm man and then you texted me a little later and
- 46:33I'll just do the radio and you're like this isn't hurting
- 46:36us as much as I thought it would.
- 46:37So who you know, I think the Sears back this week will
- 46:40clearly be the starter again, but who took over the strong
- 46:43safety role. When that happened, we saw
- 46:45strowman in there a lot when we went and nickel.
- 46:47We saw a lot of DJ Harvey, so there there wasn't a lot of drop
- 46:54off because of the the mix of those two getting in there.
- 46:58DJ held up. Well, he made some plays out
- 47:01there and then we saw strowman that was out there doing a
- 47:04really good job and obviously Stroman in particular has played
- 47:07a lot of snaps in kind of a secondary role this year and it
- 47:12on nickel package is so seeing him getting a more consistent
- 47:15role for all for all three steps, there was good, he
- 47:21actually showed up very well. Yeah, we keep mentioned, a lot
- 47:24of younger guys, names, more and more, and more and playing the
- 47:26best last piece, Brian. And I know you hate being,
- 47:30right? But you said it last week, like,
- 47:32if we keep them at 40%, we have a chance to win this game.
- 47:35They were 47. 40 percent is roughly one less plate, one or
- 47:41two less plays. If you think Van Dyke Granite
- 47:44late to get the third down, that kept them the ball, obviously
- 47:48numerous times during the during the game.
- 47:52Where they're The scoring range they get in scoring range or if
- 47:55it's a stop, some of those third and Long's or second and Long's
- 47:58where they make it up and now it kind of hinges.
- 48:02It's like I know you hate being right?
- 48:06But does it frustrate you even more?
- 48:09You watch the whole game and I'm sure after the game, you're down
- 48:11at the beach. I'm sure.
- 48:12You went out to lunch dinner. Watch some games.
- 48:14Those did you look at your phone and see that percentage in like
- 48:17shit. Shit.
- 48:20One play. Yeah I mean and you know you
- 48:24pointed out the I'd say you like two or three of the Tyler Van
- 48:28Dyke runs if you take those away it's a different game.
- 48:32Your credit to him for being of the extend plays and make some
- 48:35good reads on some of those read options obviously some some
- 48:39points of those games. You're crashing hard, you're
- 48:43trying to make a play, he made a smart move and pulled it, and
- 48:47was able to run for a first down on a couple of those.
- 48:50And that's kind of the difference in the game.
- 48:51I think, you know, they were getting a couple more plays here
- 48:54there, and we weren't making the plays that were there,
- 48:58especially on offense sometimes. So that's just how it goes.
- 49:01I think this team is still learning how to to win and how
- 49:05to make those winning plays in situations where a play can kind
- 49:08of go either direction. And we're just Making enough of
- 49:12them yet. Absolutely.
- 49:14So, again, we'll close that chapter.
- 49:16As we go into the bye week, Hokies fall.
- 49:20We got Brian cops. I feel like wholesome are in the
- 49:22same position. We appreciate your loyalty and
- 49:24dedication, but the young Bulls, you didn't get more snaps and I
- 49:26think that's probably what we're going to see.
- 49:28And we're seeing the head, coach mentioning more and more.
- 49:32Let's go into some news and notes frying, catfish last week.
- 49:36You ever read a tweet that looks real?
- 49:39And it looks like a real Source Ryan.
- 49:41Austin was not fired last week from Auburn.
- 49:43I don't know how much longer they're going to keep him though
- 49:46because he lost again, but I didn't find out till, like,
- 49:50Saturday, and I'm like, sitting there, like, Brian, who got me
- 49:58again, got me again, but eventually he's gonna get fired.
- 50:02Um, so I'll make up that Brian. I know you were at the beach,
- 50:06you're doing a lot of things, but let me tell you some
- 50:08Saturday. That's one of those days for
- 50:11college. Ball that even though the Hokies
- 50:14lost and it sucks. But maybe, as you get older,
- 50:18it's easier. And we're slowly approaching 40.
- 50:21Maybe that's why makes it easier for us the afternoon in the
- 50:24nights later games, man. I mean, three unbelievable
- 50:28games. Yeah, I mean, it was kind of, it
- 50:32was fun all day, man. It was fun all day.
- 50:34We had, you know, we started the day with our Hokies had some big
- 50:38matchups in the afternoon, had a good evening slate.
- 50:43Got got to like check back and forth on what Michigan.
- 50:46Doing during our game. So, I mean, well, that became
- 50:50very apparent about six minutes into the second half.
- 50:53They just turned on the afterburners.
- 50:55Yeah. And just left Penn State.
- 50:56Unfortunately, I was my pick was Okie State, four and a half of
- 51:01that day and gonna go to overtime.
- 51:04I make it, but give TCU credit down 14, with, like under 10
- 51:09left, they come all the way back.
- 51:11And when the other game I was tuned into Too late night Kyle,
- 51:18Winningham has balls of stone because it's 4241, you're
- 51:22playing USC and he says screw over time.
- 51:25He goes 42 and they get it and they beat USC.
- 51:28Yeah, that was a big. I was a big dump move.
- 51:30They big nut move. Now obviously though the big one
- 51:35we both were watching. I'm sure it made us all cry a
- 51:40little on the inside. I'll hook you fans can admit it,
- 51:42especially if you knew obviously the hinted hooker thing but then
- 51:47who is throwing too. But that was an unbelievable
- 51:49game. Start to finish, start to finish
- 51:53Tennessee, kind of gets out early, Alabama claws back then
- 51:57it's a back-and-forth show to kind of close things out and you
- 52:02get a missed field goal in One Direction.
- 52:05You get two, good plays by Hendon and In field goal range,
- 52:09field goal gets tipped. It's tipped and it Knuckles
- 52:13through the damn goal, post and clears.
- 52:15The upright by about that much. Oh, that was wild and then, you
- 52:21know, love them, hate Tennessee, you rushed the field on that,
- 52:24you do tear down the goalposts. You go crazy.
- 52:27You tear down the goalposts. You pull up some some Checker
- 52:29Turf. Oh my God, the whole shebang,
- 52:33man. I hope one day we can do that
- 52:36again in Lane Stadium. By the way tomorrow?
- 52:39Brian. Do you know what tomorrow is?
- 52:42Well, we got Sports Equinox. Hey Equinox on 1020 for those
- 52:49who don't know what a sporty could knock.
- 52:51Is basically every major sport in this country including
- 52:55college football will be played tomorrow night baseball,
- 53:00playoffs NFL college football, hockey and NBA.
- 53:03And it's was you should like take off from work, but we can't
- 53:08because we've already taken too many days off this year for
- 53:10other things but you know it's awesome when it happens.
- 53:14It really is because you can't get away from it and it's one of
- 53:18those where it's, yeah, I'm not watching a show tonight.
- 53:20I'm watching some sort of sport Curtis wants yesterday's sick
- 53:25day back so he can take it tomorrow Friday the Friday.
- 53:30Alright, another thing that came up and we saw some Hokies
- 53:35respond so I had to put it on here.
- 53:37Someone I've seen in concert, I think you saw in concert but
- 53:40Marty Smith takes put out there in a tweak.
- 53:43What is the best? Alan Some song, I'll let you
- 53:47lead sir. Alright, so my pick is Midnight
- 53:52in Montgomery. It's the the ain't go song, you
- 53:55know, there's there's like a plethora of Hank Go songs, but I
- 53:59put Midnight in Montgomery right up there with the ride by David
- 54:02Allan Coe, as the two upper echelon, goes to Hank, Williams
- 54:07songs. And then, the other one is, I
- 54:11don't even know your name. Jeff, Foxworthy in the This
- 54:14video some classic tongue-in-cheek like fruit.
- 54:20Yeah justjust great quintessential 90s country song
- 54:27true true. Both of them and two songs that
- 54:30a lot of people who here Alan Jackson probably can't correlate
- 54:33unless you follow the country at that point in time I want to go
- 54:36to both weepers the best song, his all times here in the real
- 54:40world, my opinion. Because the opening line of that
- 54:44song of cowboys don't die in here.
- 54:46Oh don't cry. That gets here, because here in
- 54:49the real world, the boy don't always get the girl, breaks your
- 54:52heart and then someday. I mean, just like the most weepy
- 54:58ballad songs you ever heard, but if you listen to them, the
- 55:01poetic piece in, there is big and Brawn before we go to break.
- 55:07Alan Jackson's got some all-time weepers though.
- 55:09He does though, man. Remember when Drive?
- 55:12I mean it's he's he's he's one of the greatest.
- 55:17I would say some people say contemporary he's one of the
- 55:20greatest country song writers of all time and all four songs we
- 55:23mentioned Wrote, he wrote those songs, some of the songs and
- 55:30we're not even mentioned, where were you, when the world stopped
- 55:31turning. And I, like what somebody said
- 55:34on that one, like he wrote that song and nobody helps tried
- 55:38after that fact, Brian real quick.
- 55:41Before we go to break here on dueling a remembrance because
- 55:46year ago today we lost one of our best friends and you know,
- 55:53You put up the story of your Facebook page about the Rumple
- 55:55Minze, a which, to this day, we were in college.
- 55:59Yep, Brown Wilkerson there with this bunch of other buddies,
- 56:02Robbie Jason and we make a shit ton of shots with a variety of
- 56:07Liquors. One of them was Rumple Minze.
- 56:11Brian you mentioned on there, man?
- 56:14About that night and I remember that night that he was the only
- 56:18person of our group that somehow all night.
- 56:20Didn't take a Rumple Minze shot. Yeah, he knew.
- 56:25Which one's had the blue label, vodka, and which one's had the
- 56:28Rumple Minze? And he had and my God, he got
- 56:31none of them. And we got all of them and you
- 56:35were in college, you didn't spit out liquor, but just one of
- 56:38those moments and, you know, it's been a year I missed the
- 56:41test because he would be texting us or putting something Right
- 56:44now on here, and Brian will always miss you man.
- 56:49And and and I said, I'm not in my post.
- 56:53I am a man of many words, anybody's ever, met me and talk
- 56:56to me, I can, I can talk your ear off all day, but for him and
- 57:01I'm thinking this me and Brian we miss you, man.
- 57:03We're always going to miss you. And now all for additional
- 57:07partners. As we take a quick break, we
- 57:10like to tell you about getting your free website report from
- 57:13our digital partner, Grassroots, digital marketing Studio.
- 57:15They'll tell you how your website ranks on Google on-site,
- 57:18SEO and social media. No commitment to buy anything.
- 57:21You can get your free report by visiting.
- 57:23Grassroots digital studio.com forward slash free Dash website,
- 57:28Dash report. Now back to the episode All
- 57:32right, Brian. So let's get into the what if
- 57:37so, about a month ago? I mean, Brian were kicking
- 57:40around. What do we do about?
- 57:41Do we just go in and do a recap and kick it?
- 57:44That wouldn't be fun. We did that.
- 57:46Last year, we did that. Yeah, we did this.
- 57:49We got to keep you all over your toes.
- 57:51You can't just forgive the same shit every year, exactly.
- 57:53But this year is the, what if it's the, you know, wish you
- 57:59were here? I miss you.
- 58:00You. I wish I'd like to have that one
- 58:02back. Think of all those songs in your
- 58:04head of all the hockey players that left last year declaring
- 58:09for the draft portal. And all that who would be and we
- 58:15were merging it for. But Brian said that's too easy.
- 58:18We got to make it three. Who are the three players?
- 58:21You wish you could have back on this team and then legibility
- 58:26remaining that either left early portal.
- 58:32So we start going through the list and we've got our list
- 58:34here, and what we're going to do is go through all the players
- 58:37and then we're going to go through.
- 58:40Are 3, because there are three do not match per se.
- 58:45And then we're going to talk about what we think we'd be at.
- 58:47Now, let's start here. Brian one guy, maybe kind of
- 58:50unsung guy. Pay daily.
- 58:53You know I'll let you give us pros and I'll give some of those
- 58:56kinds and we'll go why he's not back essentially on us.
- 59:01Yeah. I mean the pros of him coming
- 59:04back for his this year, he could have given us more flexibility
- 59:06at safety or Sam linebacker and he would have provided some
- 59:10additional leadership on the defense as a.
- 59:12Another veteran on that back end and sort of the Cons with it is
- 59:18he was a solid but not as you know, spectacular player.
- 59:22A good player and sometimes a little bit inconsistent when
- 59:25it's technique and I think as we were discussing this and we're
- 59:28talking Tay, I think the back is just good enough.
- 59:32I think the back end is good enough where it is in.
- 59:36You know, the only thing you could say, is, could you save a
- 59:39red shirt? And I think we're now to the
- 59:40point where saving a red shirt. We're not seeing that work out
- 59:44because some of the guys who are playing are better.
- 59:47Yeah, absolutely. All right.
- 59:49Next on our list guy, we had on this show, It was Jordan
- 59:53Williams. Now the pros for Jordan I mean
- 59:56he was one of we thought about it long and hard maybe shouldn't
- 59:59be as high but we just did it in an order because his body type
- 1:00:03and his play style fits. What we're doing on the
- 1:00:06defensive side of the ball without a shadow of a doubt
- 1:00:09gives that line even more leadership.
- 1:00:11And then by maybe I made the point, he creates some winning
- 1:00:15match ups because of what we're asking him to do, there would be
- 1:00:19times where Garbutt wouldn't be getting Guard hand in his face
- 1:00:24as he goes around the end. Yep.
- 1:00:26They would have to come inside and focus on Jordan a little
- 1:00:29bit. It's another guy.
- 1:00:30You got to look down for heavily.
- 1:00:32It gives you a veteran four-man rotation.
- 1:00:37They're just, you know, there's a lot of things that would that
- 1:00:39would benefit their. Now, the kind of him coming
- 1:00:41back, I think he had kind of already maximized his draft
- 1:00:44stock, which we took into account, because we have to
- 1:00:47because that's their guy at their money.
- 1:00:49Yeah. And I think in terms of Oops, it
- 1:00:53would've been fewer steps for Wilfred permit penne to grow
- 1:00:56into the position. And if you're thinking
- 1:00:58long-term, that's probably better for us in a year like
- 1:01:02this year, where is throwing a guy like Jordan back in there?
- 1:01:08Make it big difference in the win-loss column, you know, who's
- 1:01:11to say, absolutely. So, if Jordan, and obviously,
- 1:01:15we've seen having food on seeing Kendricks and Pinette and
- 1:01:20Pollard we played good. Could he be beneficial?
- 1:01:24Yeah, absolutely. All right, next one.
- 1:01:26And this was one of the tough ones.
- 1:01:28It was Jermaine Waller. I mean, I love strong to death,
- 1:01:33but Waller is a better Corner than him.
- 1:01:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:01:37I mean it's not light years better especially you know we
- 1:01:41haven't really seen him not banged up since 2019.
- 1:01:44Sure. But he would have been an
- 1:01:46immediate number one corner on the team.
- 1:01:49You know, he'd be back in a system that better fits his
- 1:01:51skill set. We think about when he had his
- 1:01:54best year, it was 2019 when he was playing kind of more of a
- 1:02:00similar style to what we're playing now and you know, it
- 1:02:04will given us some more rotation flexibility in the secondary,
- 1:02:08whether it's, you know, nickel corner or different things like
- 1:02:11that. We have been able to get a lot
- 1:02:13more matchup based situations. We're not in any sort of Area
- 1:02:22where we're guys can take advantage of mismatches.
- 1:02:26Absolutely. And I'll sort of the cons
- 1:02:28similar to Jordan Williams. He'd already maximized his draft
- 1:02:32stock. I think where he was where he
- 1:02:34was, but for him, it was the injury history to because if you
- 1:02:38think about that, you know, he essentially retired from the
- 1:02:41lines due to an injury. What if it was something that
- 1:02:43happened in Spring ball where like the trainers are like
- 1:02:46listening if you don't quit football right now.
- 1:02:50You're going to walk with a limp for the rest of your life, or,
- 1:02:52you know, you're not gonna be able to do these things.
- 1:02:55Yeah, I don't know what happened to Troy but usually when a guy
- 1:02:58retires like that, it's something where they're saying
- 1:03:00the rest of your life is going to be affected by this, and then
- 1:03:04a lot of it, what keeps going back to is?
- 1:03:06It's less snaps for Harvey and struggling and obviously both of
- 1:03:09them played very well on Saturday and kind of playing
- 1:03:13well for the season. So as much as it's a temptation
- 1:03:16to have Waller and strong and really Probably turn a top.
- 1:03:23That's a top, have a cc secondary into probably an elite
- 1:03:26third. We just neither one of us could
- 1:03:30pull the trigger on. Yeah, it was close.
- 1:03:33It was close for, sure. It's closed.
- 1:03:34Now, another one that I thought Brian was going to pull the
- 1:03:37trigger on how much she loved him, all these years was Raheem
- 1:03:40Blackshear. Now, I think we see how they've
- 1:03:46used the players in this scheme. How they Malachi had six balls.
- 1:03:50As we've seen them, run some good place to Keshawn King.
- 1:03:53He definitely would have probably got his skillset
- 1:03:55maximized. It also would have meant a lot
- 1:03:59better rotation when Thomas was healthy, when shooting when
- 1:04:03Thomas was injured and obviously he's one of the he is already
- 1:04:08after he got traded or released inside North Carolina and
- 1:04:12against minors, he is showing his value in the kick return
- 1:04:14game and we saw that a few times last year when he had big run
- 1:04:18backs. So you Sort of that depth where
- 1:04:22you again, it's sort of, as a trickle effect, right?
- 1:04:25And if it helps with depth all around because you don't have to
- 1:04:27rush him and Keyshawn out there together, you can rush them out
- 1:04:30one at a time and so on, and so forth.
- 1:04:32Now what's the cons on him? Right, you know, I think that
- 1:04:37one of the cons is that he loses some value with the healthy
- 1:04:39Thomas and then a Revitalize Keshawn King this year.
- 1:04:43You know, you got three mouths to feed Our who's going to get
- 1:04:47some of those carries is it going to be kind of a true, you
- 1:04:50know? Rotation is it going to still be
- 1:04:52Thomas? Kind of the lead guy and then
- 1:04:54you have black sheer and KK kind of working in there and it's
- 1:04:58going to cause some of the young players.
- 1:05:00Some reps. I wish we could get brass Duke.
- 1:05:03Some more carries this year as things goes along red shirts,
- 1:05:05already burned. So we might as well take some
- 1:05:07Advantage there. You probably wouldn't have that.
- 1:05:10If you had blacks back on this team and kind of like the some
- 1:05:14of the others we already talked about he'd probably already
- 1:05:15maximized. Stock and especially, and
- 1:05:18especially for his age, as a running back.
- 1:05:23You're running back incoming backs, not going to
- 1:05:25significantly improve your dress that and get out there get on
- 1:05:28the team. Find a roster spot and get
- 1:05:31moving. Do exactly what he's done when
- 1:05:33he got the Carolina. Yep.
- 1:05:35He nail has a roster spot, probably for the rest of the
- 1:05:37year there and they'll probably bring him back next year, so
- 1:05:40making the right decisions. Now we're getting into the
- 1:05:43really tough ones that we left off.
- 1:05:46And some people are going to curse and say, how do you leave
- 1:05:48these guys off? The first one is Brock.
- 1:05:51Hoffman and Brian. I'll let you get into the pros
- 1:05:55of why we could have brought them back.
- 1:05:59Yeah, I mean he would be an upgrade on the offensive line
- 1:06:02mainly because of his versatility, his skill set would
- 1:06:06also fit Rudolph skiing probably as good or better than anybody
- 1:06:10in the current line right now and he's got a nasty streak and
- 1:06:14kind of sets the tone for the off.
- 1:06:16It's so I think that would be kind of a good personality to
- 1:06:21have on this style of Team, you know.
- 1:06:24But there are some cons Curtis I'll let you roll with those.
- 1:06:27Well another big con we keep going back to it more and more
- 1:06:30and more is he maximize his draft stock?
- 1:06:33You know Brock was already rocks, 23 years old in an
- 1:06:37offensive lineman it's very similar.
- 1:06:39You start getting up there in years, you know, Brian you
- 1:06:42played for years, you hit a wall, it's over.
- 1:06:45Now, you have you Freaks Like Kelsey and Trent Williams who
- 1:06:48somehow complete 15 years. They don't lose a step, but most
- 1:06:51times, it's 56 years and guys done because of the hole in the
- 1:06:56punishment that takes on the body.
- 1:06:57So we maximize Drive stop. He had to take it.
- 1:07:00And now, you know, he's made Cleveland's roster, great for
- 1:07:02him, the personal fouls and penalties is something we've
- 1:07:05tried to clean up. And a couple of those games have
- 1:07:09brought was still on the offensive line.
- 1:07:11I'm wondering if we could have been closer to 200 yards of
- 1:07:13Total Building yard, we were like to lie.
- 1:07:16Penalized team in power 5. Last year.
- 1:07:19And like half of those were Brock.
- 1:07:20Hoffman. Exactly.
- 1:07:23Probably the other. Point significant upgraded
- 1:07:26Center. We do say specifically Center
- 1:07:29because of obviously y'all don't hear names being called, you're
- 1:07:33going to figure out the rest but Johnny's played well this year
- 1:07:37Johnny's clay came in and asked to do good and he's done well
- 1:07:41and it's tough to leave an offensive lineman off because of
- 1:07:44the struggles we have but I think as you get into it, you
- 1:07:48guys are going to see why. Now, this was the biggie, this
- 1:07:53was the one. We we literally last Friday On
- 1:07:58the phone for what? Probably an hour and 20 minutes
- 1:08:02and 25 were talking about this guy and it's James Mitchell.
- 1:08:09Who's currently the Detroit Lions?
- 1:08:11He clearly would have been the best athlete on the field.
- 1:08:15On the offensive side of the ball.
- 1:08:16Ricardo to you, bring back the other pieces, Brian and talked
- 1:08:21about it. We're already seeing it with
- 1:08:23Daquan right and some with Nick Gallo this really would have
- 1:08:26benefited. Hits the coaching scheme of
- 1:08:28collarbone? What a significantly benefited
- 1:08:31him. He got drafted in the sixth
- 1:08:34round. He got to be grafted mostly off
- 1:08:38some good Red Zone scores and athleticism and the other thing
- 1:08:42is you just said it Ron. He could have potentially
- 1:08:44maximize his draft potential. Now, does that mean day one?
- 1:08:48I'd say no, I would say no later than early day three.
- 1:08:52So probably somewhere between pick Sin 115 the upper half of
- 1:09:00the round for. So he would have maximized about
- 1:09:0224 around which would have been a lot of money.
- 1:09:04Yeah. It's he probably goes from where
- 1:09:06he was to either late day to early day three.
- 1:09:10Now there are few cons we only got two, instead of three.
- 1:09:15Yep, the biggest one is that that's probably the deepest room
- 1:09:19in terms of ability in our roster right now.
- 1:09:23We already have two hybrid players that were working in
- 1:09:27obviously. One is a true freshman and
- 1:09:29Daquan right? The other is Connor blumrich
- 1:09:34which we haven't really seen a whole lot of sense.
- 1:09:36Rights kind of come on but you know we still have guys at that
- 1:09:41position that we can line up and get some production out of.
- 1:09:44And I think the other one is that he kind of knew he'd have a
- 1:09:47spot on an NFL roster, bit this resume just based on that
- 1:09:52athleticism. Yep I mean his size his speed
- 1:09:56and hands those They're already there.
- 1:09:59You know, the only knock on him was coming off the injury.
- 1:10:02Obviously, yep. Not really being able to fully
- 1:10:05work out for a lot of these teams before the draft.
- 1:10:07And that was a point. Me in Brian made about the
- 1:10:10injury. History, is a guy who has his
- 1:10:14type of ability, teams will draft even if they're hurt.
- 1:10:18And if they aren't up to full speed to begin, see, there are
- 1:10:20our the right on their full paycheck.
- 1:10:21And I are on because a, a team, like, the Lions know, there are
- 1:10:25certain teams who are very well. L ran that will go snipe those
- 1:10:29players in a heartbeat and put them on practice squad.
- 1:10:33And sometimes we leave through the practice squad, they say,
- 1:10:36well, you can go back there or we'll give you half a million
- 1:10:38dollars to be a practice white guy because we think you're
- 1:10:41going to be on the roster next year.
- 1:10:42So, I think he, he knew, he knew that he was going to land, and I
- 1:10:46think we look, he was already fully guaranteed a million bucks
- 1:10:49this year. So he's already got
- 1:10:50life-changing money, right out the gate.
- 1:10:52Yeah. All right.
- 1:10:54So let's do this. Brian, we have basically A one
- 1:10:59consensus, pick one opposite pick and then two players.
- 1:11:05We sort of said I could take one of the other, you'll probably
- 1:11:07can guess the last two. But let's start with the
- 1:11:10consensus problem. Let's start with the seat is
- 1:11:12Smith and what he would bring to this team for this year.
- 1:11:16Yeah, I mean the big thing is an immediate upgrade on the
- 1:11:18offensive line. I think with his versatility he
- 1:11:21could be a starting left guard or left tackle.
- 1:11:24That would move Silas back over to write that would really
- 1:11:27assure up a lot of some of the problems that we've seen on the
- 1:11:30offensive line, provide veteran leadership from a proven Talent.
- 1:11:35So we've got some leaders out there on this line, but Silas
- 1:11:38has been in and out of the lineup and up and down the depth
- 1:11:41chart his entire career. Johnny wasn't a starter last
- 1:11:45year. This will be a guy that was a
- 1:11:47three-year starter that immediately guys could respond
- 1:11:51to could lean on things of that nature.
- 1:11:55He would likely adapt better to the scheme and the adjustments
- 1:11:59that were needed and can help the others with that
- 1:12:02communication and things that were needed to kind of get
- 1:12:04everybody on the same page. So that's going to lift the
- 1:12:07running game as a whole and it would help in the passing game
- 1:12:10as well with some of those protection calls and some of the
- 1:12:14communications that's needed for those switches.
- 1:12:18And you mentioned Brian, how this would everything would
- 1:12:21benefit the Run game as a whole if he came back and I think
- 1:12:23that's 100% regardless what they did with him.
- 1:12:26Regardless, if you say, hey we're going to keep Solace at.
- 1:12:29We're going to, we're going to move Silas, the left tackle,
- 1:12:30he's going to play left tackle. And we'll see the cigar well,
- 1:12:34with some of those inside Powers Grand.
- 1:12:36I'm sure there are times you see it and you just think hatoful
- 1:12:40see, this will start. That whole would have opened
- 1:12:43immediately kind of what you're seeing from Braylon more and him
- 1:12:47being a Fix as a lot because he went in the fifth round he could
- 1:12:51have went a lot earlier shows. You sometimes guard slip but I
- 1:12:55think the leadership I think having him like him and Silas
- 1:12:59both being there and having that voice it just gives you so many
- 1:13:02options. Yep.
- 1:13:03And it's tough. Not to say that guy's not on the
- 1:13:06team just by himself. The team's not better when lost
- 1:13:10wise today. That's a right.
- 1:13:14So write that down, Brian and Curtis.
- 1:13:16We both wish lists M Smith and what if he was back.
- 1:13:20Now, let's go into our opposites because this is where we split.
- 1:13:23I'll let you lead sir. So I mean I'm an offensive line
- 1:13:28guys. So what do you think I'm going
- 1:13:30to do? I've got Luke tenuta coming back
- 1:13:33to play. Left tackle for as you know, how
- 1:13:35we said. Let's see.
- 1:13:35This myth could play left guard or left tackle in my scenario.
- 1:13:39He's playing guard because we got Luke 2 It coming back to
- 1:13:42play left tackle. We're side in silence over to
- 1:13:45write either way and it's the trickle-down benefits.
- 1:13:50Now, you've got a solid left side, you've got Silas on the
- 1:13:54right not having to have quite as many responsibilities in
- 1:13:58terms of protecting the quarterbacks Blindside provides
- 1:14:01depth in case of injuries. Now, you got Parker coming off
- 1:14:05your bench as the sub guy instead of having to be relied
- 1:14:08on every snap and it's a Upgrade in the Run blocking and it's
- 1:14:13more consistent past Pro. As a unit.
- 1:14:15I know that tenuta sometimes had, you know, little little
- 1:14:20lazy sets that he get beat on, but he was he's a lot more
- 1:14:24consistent. I think, overall, the what we've
- 1:14:26seen this year from both tackles, so he would definitely
- 1:14:30have lifted that unit as a whole and it could benefit Parker's
- 1:14:33development kind of sitting back another season, watching these
- 1:14:36guys work and kind of working in when he had the opportunity.
- 1:14:42Having to kind of be thrown to the Wolves a little bit this
- 1:14:44year and seeing how he struggled in this new system.
- 1:14:48I think getting a little bit more watch time a little bit
- 1:14:51more extra rep time instead of having to you know go out there
- 1:14:54and show it could have benefited him this year.
- 1:14:58All right? And I went completely opposite
- 1:15:01opposite side of the ball and to me you got to bring him re bar.
- 1:15:04No back. I mean the guy would immediately
- 1:15:07be the most Dynamic Athlete on the field and I think with him
- 1:15:11coming back. Back as the opposite Edge rusher
- 1:15:15with garbage. You'd have a dynamic duo there,
- 1:15:18right? You'd have to orbit who's had a
- 1:15:20good season. You'd have bar know who not many
- 1:15:23left tackles to get their hands on.
- 1:15:25I think you would move that room in the defense from middle of
- 1:15:28the ACC, kind of top 40 country, probably too near the top of the
- 1:15:32ACC, probably top 20, top 15 in the country having that sort of
- 1:15:38pass rush presence. But the other big pieces.
- 1:15:41If he Back it allows McRae and Nelson to develop without being
- 1:15:46asked to do too much and we are asking them a lot to do.
- 1:15:49We are we are asking them to do a lot this year.
- 1:15:52They've done well in spots, they had some struggles in spots so
- 1:15:55for me is bad as the offense has struggled.
- 1:15:58Yes, it's 117. Yes, we're struggling all over
- 1:16:01the place. What's good make?
- 1:16:04Great because I've seen the top 15 defense.
- 1:16:07Even with 100, ranked offense, when 10 games and I still think
- 1:16:13that can happen now. Brian.
- 1:16:15But other Iowa, I mean, I would say gz, but, but here's the
- 1:16:21thing, Brian and I want to make a Counterpoint to loosen it up.
- 1:16:25I think bringing the seed is back, and I think if he wasn't
- 1:16:29my one, if I didn't have a little cetus to neuter, Hoffman,
- 1:16:32one of those guys. A Mac, but I think having the
- 1:16:35Cedars back it automatically, because if you feel like it,
- 1:16:40goes back schematics, right? Well, if you playing at left
- 1:16:42tackle, you still start Hanson? It Garden, can let Silas and
- 1:16:45them battle in to your point if Parker's not clicking.
- 1:16:50Because Silas, playing Left For the First Time.
- 1:16:53Yes, he's had his moments but he's also done a decent job.
- 1:16:57You know, I could see the, see this doing that.
- 1:17:00And having Hanson and still letting more.
- 1:17:02Remember that your boy more little more if placitas and Luke
- 1:17:07come back? He is not getting the Run
- 1:17:09showing what he can do solidify himself for next year.
- 1:17:14That's a good point, but at the same time, we've got a couple of
- 1:17:22running backs that have shown the ability of Thomas to make
- 1:17:27good plays in the great plays and King to be explosive and hit
- 1:17:31the home run. If we give them a little bit
- 1:17:34more space to operate this running game can be pretty
- 1:17:38dynamic. So if you add in two other
- 1:17:42players to shore up the the weaker areas of the of the
- 1:17:46offensive line the trickle down to me is much more important
- 1:17:51than what bar? No can bring on the other side
- 1:17:55because I think, you know, McRae doesn't has a similar skill set.
- 1:18:01Not quite as Dynamic. Not quite as you know, the
- 1:18:04combination of size and speed a bar.
- 1:18:06No, but he's got a similar skills that he's pretty pretty.
- 1:18:10Long and pretty fast. I think what we can do on the
- 1:18:15offensive side will benefit us. All right?
- 1:18:17And see I'm on the exact opposite because I think if
- 1:18:20looking at the gains we've lost, you know, you'd think you talked
- 1:18:25about Van Dyke. There are times he just we
- 1:18:27couldn't get him off a spot. I think Barney would have got
- 1:18:29him off of spot. I think bar no would have gotten
- 1:18:33even though I see Carolina still as a loss.
- 1:18:35I think bar. No would have got intrigued me
- 1:18:37off a spot. I think our know would have
- 1:18:38helped significantly with the run defense against West
- 1:18:41Virginia and Much as I want to put on the offense.
- 1:18:47The defense did break late and could you imagine having that
- 1:18:50one extra Dynamic player on the field for 20 extra plays and
- 1:18:56where it takes the total, but we'll stop.
- 1:18:59There's our count printer points.
- 1:19:01Brian's taking the second offensive lineman Luke to new
- 1:19:03to. I'm taking a maribor.
- 1:19:05No at the edge. Alright.
- 1:19:08Then we got to the to where we kind of flip the coin because we
- 1:19:12could, they both would be good. Brian, I'll let you Since you
- 1:19:17want him in the coin, but I'll let you start with your guy
- 1:19:19first. Alright, so I'm we're targeting
- 1:19:24here. Wide receiver.
- 1:19:25Yes, we are. And I went Trey Turner here.
- 1:19:30I think, you know, putting him on this team, he's immediately
- 1:19:33wide receiver one. I appreciate what Caleb Smith is
- 1:19:36doing, but just trays ability to run.
- 1:19:39I think a different combination of routes would have helped and
- 1:19:43just his veteran presence would have helped.
- 1:19:46At this team, it would also allow Smith to operate without
- 1:19:51as much attention trade trade with at least draw an equal.
- 1:19:56You know, respect across that line, you wouldn't quite have as
- 1:20:00many people keying on what Caleb Smith is doing.
- 1:20:04If you got Trey Turner opposite them, the leadership and Veteran
- 1:20:09presence in the wide receiver room.
- 1:20:11I think that's big trade. We've definitely a leader.
- 1:20:14He was a guy that you could tell love the It was kind of, you
- 1:20:20know, a great voice in the room and it creates a, you know, he
- 1:20:25has a versatile skills that wide receiver, he never ended up
- 1:20:29becoming the, you know, the the huge presence that I think some
- 1:20:34people thought he would as a freshman, but he is a very, very
- 1:20:37solid player. Would definitely be wide
- 1:20:39receiver one on this team and he can do a lot of different
- 1:20:42things. Whether it's, you know, do stuff
- 1:20:45out of the back field, Old jet sweeps, all sorts of things.
- 1:20:49So he showed that he has the versatility to do a lot of
- 1:20:51different things. In an offense, I think having a
- 1:20:54veteran like that on the team would have been a big boost.
- 1:20:57Yeah. And obviously if Brian went tray
- 1:21:00I was on the opposite side of the coin.
- 1:21:02I went Kay Robinson immediate upgrade in the slot and at the
- 1:21:06wide receiver position cable Smith has played great this year
- 1:21:10at The X. So I think having Tavon there
- 1:21:14would be a huge up Grade, he fits the scheme.
- 1:21:18Well, there are a lot of things that we are seeing done with the
- 1:21:21other receivers that you feel like, if Taylor Robinson had
- 1:21:24just hung out, maybe he's not where he is with Kentucky, with
- 1:21:28this debts. I mean his stats in Kentucky
- 1:21:30this year pretty daggone good. I mean averaging over 15 and a
- 1:21:33half, a catch almost 400 yards and six games he is well on his
- 1:21:38way to easily breaking his his yards and touchdown set when he
- 1:21:44was with the Hokies all So that special team and don't get me
- 1:21:48wrong, but we haven't fumbled. But like once this year on
- 1:21:52special teams but with him, you know, it's Dynamic, you know, if
- 1:21:57you're punching to Tavian Robinson.
- 1:22:00You might have to leave one less guy into potentially, not block
- 1:22:03the pain to get down field because we know he can take them
- 1:22:06to the house. We know he can get you big field
- 1:22:08flipping returns and I think that's another really crucial
- 1:22:12element because you put the fear in special teams.
- 1:22:17And then again you mentioned what Trey I think it's the same
- 1:22:20with taste a versatile skill set, right?
- 1:22:22We saw these guys forums, we saw them do different things and
- 1:22:25that Woods makes them so important and it may be a reason
- 1:22:28we didn't bring Mitchell back his It was more than one element
- 1:22:31in the gain that can affect and to us we kind of discussed it,
- 1:22:36they were both mythical. That's why Miss.
- 1:22:38We literally had a coin toss who was going to talk about who
- 1:22:42because we look at that room Braun and what's it missing?
- 1:22:46It's missing like one top-end talent and Leadership.
- 1:22:50That's what it's missing the most.
- 1:22:52You know, if you got a leader and you got a top in player, you
- 1:22:55know, you probably turn in some of these plays that were
- 1:22:58missing. In the first downs in two
- 1:23:01touchdowns. Absolutely and and you know and
- 1:23:07that's what kind of stinks going through here and look at it all
- 1:23:09the players potentially come back, we chose three.
- 1:23:13It is a few players from being a better team and that's where the
- 1:23:20other long part of our conversation on Friday.
- 1:23:23When we talk was. All right, Brian, where's our
- 1:23:26team of our three guys, come back And I sat there and told
- 1:23:30you that I think Carolina's a loss regardless, I do.
- 1:23:35But I think if I were three players come back, I think I'd
- 1:23:38chalk up Carolina as a loss. I don't chalk up.
- 1:23:40A TOD you as a loss. I think that's a win.
- 1:23:43I think we would have scored a lot more points on them, and
- 1:23:45probably kept them. The less points with bar, no
- 1:23:47attacking off the edge. And then I think of one of the
- 1:23:51other games is, I think hit or the Miami game goes, the way of
- 1:23:55the Hokies with those guys, and I know we can say, well, my No.
- 1:23:59Excuse me. Yeah, Pitter Miami.
- 1:24:03All right. No not there yet.
- 1:24:04Mommy was your Junior. I think two of those, three go
- 1:24:06the Hokies way. Because if the West Virginia
- 1:24:08game, that was still a game going into the fourth, same with
- 1:24:12the pits, same with the Miami Hurricanes.
- 1:24:14I think we flip a couple of those because of having both
- 1:24:18sides of the balls present, so I think we're probably sitting
- 1:24:20five and two right now. And, yes, I have maroon colored
- 1:24:24glasses on tonight. I think we're at least four and
- 1:24:28three. I think we're at least above
- 1:24:29500. If you put those three, As back
- 1:24:33on this team, I think you definitely went over to you, and
- 1:24:36I think he probably take down Miami for sure.
- 1:24:40You, make pit, you know a big conversation late and you make,
- 1:24:46you make West Virginia, a conversation late as well.
- 1:24:51But the guys, I'm adding back on aren't helping the defense a
- 1:24:54lot. I feel like defense is what hurt
- 1:24:57us the most in those games. Hmm.
- 1:25:01So you know not be noticed Generate offense hurts but you
- 1:25:04know, the the defense still didn't, you came apart late?
- 1:25:08I think they probably still give up the same amount of points,
- 1:25:12and I'm not sure even with these additions if we can match that.
- 1:25:16But so I've got to sit for in three.
- 1:25:18I've got us winning ODU and winning against Miami with
- 1:25:22these, with these players back on the roster, all right?
- 1:25:27Alright. Now the last part of our
- 1:25:30exercise we did in this didn't take as long as it Brian.
- 1:25:34What if like, six of these players come back and let's say
- 1:25:37that the guys we talked about, let's say we both get that we
- 1:25:42get because I'll agree with Brian Luke was up close to me,
- 1:25:45but let's say we get Two new de. You get bar know, you get both
- 1:25:51wide receivers, you get, let's see this.
- 1:25:53That's five, right? Yeah, that's that's the five
- 1:25:56that we discuss in. We said we throw Jermaine and
- 1:25:59there as well. And Jimmy, if you got all six of
- 1:26:03our players back, where do you think we'd be?
- 1:26:08I think six in one man. I think if you bring all six of
- 1:26:11those guys back, you know you get enough boost on the
- 1:26:13defensive side where you slow down you and see a little bit
- 1:26:17more. It's that game becomes, close
- 1:26:19you, slow down West Virginia, that game becomes a w.
- 1:26:22You slow down pit in that game become the W.
- 1:26:27So you end up six and one and then, you know, you're kind of
- 1:26:31in the not the driver's seat in the conference in the coastal.
- 1:26:36But you know, you get one extra lost by U and c.
- 1:26:40And now you're now you're the team to beat, right?
- 1:26:43So absolutely. And that's why I was fun to do
- 1:26:46this because you look at these guys, in their skill sets and
- 1:26:48where they fit, and it's even more apparent.
- 1:26:51As we get into the season where you're missing, then they all
- 1:26:54had their reasons for leaving and that was 100% fine.
- 1:26:57You don't fault anyone who feels like they are making the best
- 1:27:00decision for themselves, but it sort of sucks, though, as you
- 1:27:03sit here as fans as we look at this every week and we talked
- 1:27:06about Out guys saying God that has just come back, but on the
- 1:27:11other hand, the piece that me and Brian also discussed was,
- 1:27:18did we want 2016 to happen again?
- 1:27:22Does anybody want 2016 to happen again and not necessarily that
- 1:27:26year or the year after? But the subsequent years, right?
- 1:27:31The subsequent years and being on the hook for a buyout as a Of
- 1:27:36the subsequent years I think right now we know whatever we
- 1:27:41get it's being built by Brent pride in his staff.
- 1:27:44Yep whatever, whatever the results are good or bad going
- 1:27:50forward after this year. You know, Brent prize got his
- 1:27:54hands on it, he's got his hands on it and if you're three comes
- 1:27:57and we're six and six, I think we're going to look at that
- 1:28:00through a different light, right?
- 1:28:02Yeah. Then we would have like we did
- 1:28:05in 2018. And if 2019 we went eight or
- 1:28:08nine games or you know, four years from now at eight or nine
- 1:28:11games, it's this, it's that constant building where if all
- 1:28:14those guys come back and I know I think for all of us, we'd love
- 1:28:17to be six of them. I'd love to be talking about
- 1:28:19wins every week. We'd love to talk wins every
- 1:28:21week. That's a hell of a lot, more fun
- 1:28:22than talking about losses. But the reality is, if we go
- 1:28:26back six years, how much Isaiah Ford, Bucky Hodges.
- 1:28:31Cam Phillips, Tremaine Edmonds, Terrell Edmonds, all those good
- 1:28:37players offensive ly in defensively those first couple
- 1:28:40years, Jerrod Evan. Sorry gonna forgive him.
- 1:28:45How much they covered up a lot of warts.
- 1:28:50They got shown after the big contract after all.
- 1:28:54Other shit happened, I'll say, especially in 2017 and that
- 1:28:59defense, the town on that defense and how much that
- 1:29:04covered up. Some of the warts that were
- 1:29:07starting to show that year because when we look back, we're
- 1:29:10like, okay. Well we had a, we had an
- 1:29:13above-average year, but we're already starting to see the
- 1:29:16cracks in the foundation. And, you know, with the cracks
- 1:29:21in the foundation, he had 2018, there was such an exodus of
- 1:29:25talent that that you couldn't really.
- 1:29:28You know, how bad is this team is?
- 1:29:30Are they bad because they're younger?
- 1:29:31They bad, because they're not coached well, And then then you
- 1:29:36get to 19. You start saying, you know.
- 1:29:38Okay, well now we're now we're starting this guy that's
- 1:29:41throwing a lot of picks and we're getting blown out by Duke
- 1:29:45and we're taking an intervention from an analyst to get the right
- 1:29:50course, starting quarterback in there.
- 1:29:53You know, there's so many things that as you getting into year
- 1:29:56three and four that you start getting some answers to that you
- 1:29:59didn't necessarily have in year 1 and 2 and at least with the
- 1:30:03way we're going. Now.
- 1:30:07When we get to year for we're going, another will either know
- 1:30:11where we won't. Well, bubble.
- 1:30:13Also knowing it's already kind of being shown up front that you
- 1:30:17feel like prize already holding coaching staff accountable
- 1:30:19pretty quick because if you come to your form, they're still
- 1:30:23struggles and Tyler bonesteel. You, he fires them.
- 1:30:26Your three or four. Then you know you might say well
- 1:30:30at least he knows something's not right?
- 1:30:33And that could be with various things that he's letting people
- 1:30:36go because that's still the biggest up.
- 1:30:40Justin Fuente. Never took he never took that
- 1:30:44step when there was an issue in everybody, even Layman like me,
- 1:30:50who have to ask you a lot of questions to get more insight on
- 1:30:53the game. Can see plainly, like this is
- 1:30:56Good on that side of the bowl. So, it is what it is.
- 1:31:02All right, Brian. No, the enemy this week.
- 1:31:05Yeah. We don't have an enemy.
- 1:31:06There's no game prediction, so we don't have to go out on a
- 1:31:08limb. But there are some big big games
- 1:31:12on Saturday, and I'm going out to the wet West Coast.
- 1:31:15I'm going to the AUX and Zoo. Oregon UCLA.
- 1:31:19I'm not even looking at the line on that game.
- 1:31:22I'm looking at the over under the over under 70 and a half.
- 1:31:26These teams can both score points.
- 1:31:28I don't think 70 and a half closed.
- 1:31:31I'm gonna take the over and I slept on you sell a few weekends
- 1:31:37ago at home against At home against Washington and I'm gonna
- 1:31:43sleep on them again. I think Morgan wins this game at
- 1:31:45a 3:30 on Saturday. What you got on my big screen?
- 1:31:51I'm going to have Okie State Texas.
- 1:31:56Texas is a six and a half Point favorite here.
- 1:32:00Road favorite road favorite, road.
- 1:32:02Favorite over/under is 61 and a half.
- 1:32:07I'm going to take the over here. Both of these teams have been
- 1:32:10scoring some pretty pretty big numbers but not some pretty
- 1:32:13round numbers here lately, and I'm going to actually take okey
- 1:32:17state in the points here. I'm not sure if they win it
- 1:32:21outright, but that thing's gonna come down to the wire and I
- 1:32:24think Okie state is feeling a little Little bit of Need for
- 1:32:27some Revenge. I think after after what went
- 1:32:30down last week, after blowing at 14 point lead, well, Brian.
- 1:32:34Has anything broken on the twittersphere?
- 1:32:36Any other news broken, did anybody lose a baseball game?
- 1:32:42I don't have the game on right now.
- 1:32:43You tell me but I don't either I didn't turn it off or I got in
- 1:32:46here. We missed the fun belt.
- 1:32:48We could have, had the fun belt in the background here?
- 1:32:50That's all on me. I was rushing to get in here
- 1:32:53tonight, but AB State blew the doors off.
- 1:32:55Off. George Estate, who Yeah, the fun
- 1:33:00belts the fun but you never know what's going to happen there.
