- October 22 Don't Build Comfort on Someone Else's Loss Topic: Justice. Scripture: Micah 2:1–2 1 Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. 2 They covet fields and seize them, and houses, then take them away. They oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage. Context Micah condemns powerful people who plan exploitation and then carry it out because they have the ability. Their comfort is built by taking land, homes, and security from people with less power. Let It Shape Your Life Power creates possibilities, but not every possible action is righteous. Micah describes people who can take what they want, so they do. That sentence still explains a great deal of injustice. A contract may be legal and still exploit someone who has no meaningful choice. A business decision may improve one person’s margin by quietly transferring all the risk to someone weaker. A family member may use money, status, information, or influence to make everyone else surrender. Biblical justice asks more than, “Can I get away with this?” It asks, “Who pays for my comfort? Who loses because I have more leverage?” This is not a rejection of ownership, success, or business. It is a warning that God cares how power is used. The stronger person has more responsibility, not less, to act fairly. Think About It Where do you have leverage, money, authority, information, position, or influence and how can you make sure your benefit is not built on someone else’s unfair loss?
