- 0:12Hello friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:15And it is Monday. It is the 24th of April and I'm
- 0:21so glad that you and I get to start our weeks together.
- 0:24How are you going? Well, I hope I'm doing great.
- 0:27Just had a cup of tea and ready to open up a brand new book of
- 0:34the Bible. Last year, we worked our way
- 0:37through the Book of Genesis. And so this year, we are doing
- 0:40another book from the Edit. Ook the start of the Old
- 0:43Testament. This year.
- 0:44We are reading the book of Exodus.
- 0:48Exodus is a fascinating story and the first half of the story
- 0:52will take us along with Moses as God, uses him to rescue the
- 0:57people of Israel from their captivity in Egypt, and then
- 1:00they will go out into the desert and you'll know this part well,
- 1:04and then they reach Sinai and that is where God gives them the
- 1:08law. And in the second half of Exodus
- 1:11is where God unpacks the law and how they are going to enable God
- 1:18to be present with them as they journey into their new identity.
- 1:24Now, what I would love for you to do as you and I read through
- 1:27because we're going to be spending 40 days 40 chapters
- 1:31working our way through Exodus. It's keep in mind that this book
- 1:35is all about God's presence. And so as you and I are reading
- 1:40through, I'd Love you to be thinking about this from that
- 1:44lens. How is God present?
- 1:46Where is God present? How is God not present in each
- 1:51chapter of this story as we work our way through?
- 1:54And at the beginning, we're going to notice that it seems
- 1:56like God is very not present very absent and that is what
- 2:00this story seeks to rectify. So certainly ourselves and we
- 2:05are going to be spending some time in this story that Moses
- 2:10tells his people. That is captured here in the
- 2:14book of Exodus. So Holy Spirit, awaken our
- 2:18hearts and let us hear your truth as we spend time in this
- 2:24story that we've heard before. And that, we know.
- 2:26Well, but that your truth resides and every page of your
- 2:31word, inspire us, Captivate Us, and help your presence.
- 2:37Be a reality, in our lives. All Right.
- 2:41Let's do it. Friends.
- 2:43Let's read together. Exodus chapter 1.
- 2:56These are the names of the sons of Israel, that is Jacob who
- 3:01moved to Egypt with their father, each with his family.
- 3:05Reuben Simeon. Levi.
- 3:08Judah, issachar zebulun Benjamin Dan naphtali Gad and Asher.
- 3:18You know, Jacob had 70 descendants in Egypt, including
- 3:22Joseph, who was already there in time Joseph and all of his
- 3:27brothers died ending that entire generation but their
- 3:31Descendants. The Israelites had many children
- 3:35and grandchildren. In fact, they multiplied.
- 3:38So greatly that they became extremely powerful and filled
- 3:42the land eventually. A new king came to power in
- 3:46Egypt, who knew nothing about At Joseph for what he had done.
- 3:50So he said to his people look the people of Israel.
- 3:54Now, outnumber us and a stronger than we are.
- 3:58We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more if we
- 4:04don't. And if War breaks out they will
- 4:07join our enemies and fight against us, then they will
- 4:11escape from the country. So the Egyptians made the
- 4:16Israelites, their slaves, they appointed brutal slave drivers,
- 4:20over them, hoping to wear them down with crushing labor, they
- 4:24forced them to build the cities of pithom and rameses as Supply
- 4:30Centers for the king. But the more the Egyptians
- 4:33oppress them, the more that Israelites, multiplied and
- 4:36spread, and the more alarmed the Egyptians became, so the
- 4:41Egyptians worked the people of Israel without Mercy.
- 4:45They made their lives, bitter. Forcing them to mix mortar and
- 4:48make bricks and do all the work in the fields.
- 4:51They have a ruthless and all their demands.
- 4:55Then Pharaoh the king of Egypt gave this order to the Hebrew
- 5:00midwives, shiphrah and puah. When you helped the Hebrew
- 5:04women, as they give birth watch as they deliver, if the baby is
- 5:08a boy kill him. If it is a girl, let her live
- 5:14but because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the
- 5:18king's orders. They allowed the boys to live
- 5:20too. So the king of Egypt called for
- 5:23The Midwives. Why have you done this?
- 5:27He demanded. Why have you allowed the boys to
- 5:30live? The Hebrew women are not like
- 5:34the Egyptian women, The Midwives replied.
- 5:36They are more vigorous and have their babies so quickly that we
- 5:40cannot get there in time. So, God was good to The
- 5:43Midwives. And the Israelites continued to
- 5:46multiply growing more and more powerful.
- 5:50And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of
- 5:54their own. Then Pharaoh gave this order to
- 5:58all his people, throw every newborn On Hebrew boy, into the
- 6:03Nile River, but you may let the girls live.
- 6:18Jesus, no matter how it feels, we know that you are always
- 6:22present in your creation. Sometimes your presence is overt
- 6:29and obvious and we feel you near by another times.
- 6:33It seems like you're a silent or even absent character.
- 6:39Lord in our lives. When we walk through lonely.
- 6:43Valleys and it feels like you are far, far away.
- 6:48Help us know that. You aren't remind us, that you
- 6:51walk. Right beside us, help us to feel
- 6:55your presence. So that we never doubt and we
- 6:58never worried that you are indeed, absence leaving us to
- 7:02fight the challenges of Our Lives alone.
- 7:05And thank you that no matter how we feel, we know that you have
- 7:10promised to never forsake us and to walk each moment of Life
- 7:14beside us. You are a good good God.
- 7:20And we are so grateful that you choose to love us and draw us
- 7:25into your family. That's in your name that we
- 7:28pray. Amen.
- 7:27That's in your name that we pray.
- 7:30Amen.
