- 0:00I know what I hear all the time, that Parkinson's is rare.
- 0:03Rare. Not even close.
- 0:06It's actually the fastest growing neurological condition
- 0:08in the world. That's right, it's going faster
- 0:12than Alzheimer's. So no, I'm not some Unicorn with
- 0:16a shaky walk. There are millions of us out
- 0:18here. So today we're going to be
- 0:21busting some of the biggest myths about Parkinson's, the
- 0:23ones that they don't usually talk about.
- 0:26You know, some will make you laugh, some might sting a little
- 0:29and some are just flat out wrong.
- 0:31So stick with me till the till the very end.
- 0:33Because at the end, I'm going to drop today's Bryce ISM, and it's
- 0:37one that you want to remember the next time someone throws one
- 0:40of these crazy myths at you. Welcome to Living with
- 0:44Parkinson's, the good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:48Real talk. Real life.
- 0:50Real community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 0:56Hey, I'm Bryce and welcome to living with Parkinson's, The
- 0:59good, the bad, and the reality. You know, I was 40 years old and
- 1:03when I got diagnosed, and now 15 years later, I'm still just
- 1:06trying to figure this thing out. Now, this podcast isn't about
- 1:09pretending that everything's fine.
- 1:11It's about being real. The winds, the wobbles, and the
- 1:14weird stuff in between. So don't just sit back and
- 1:17watch. Hit subscribe and be a part of
- 1:20this around here. We laugh, we vent, and we figure
- 1:22it out together. And if you've already
- 1:24subscribed, thank you for showing up again.
- 1:27You are the reason why I keep doing this.
- 1:30But OK, let's dive into these myths.
- 1:33And let's start with that whole idea that Parkinson's is rare,
- 1:36OK? Nearly 10 million people
- 1:38worldwide are living with it. In Canada alone, that's over
- 1:42100,000. And that's not rare.
- 1:45That's like a Tuesday at Costco. Now, the danger of calling it
- 1:49rare is it makes people think it's not urgent, like it's some
- 1:52fringe thing, but it's in every community.
- 1:57You probably know someone who has it, even if they haven't
- 2:00told you. So here's your quick action.
- 2:04Drop a comment right now. Not rare, so we can set the
- 2:08record straight. Let's just hammer this out.
- 2:11This is not rare. And this one, here's one that
- 2:14gets under my skin. People think Parkinson's is
- 2:17caused by bad lifestyle choices. Do you know how many times I've
- 2:21been asked like, well, what did you do?
- 2:22Did you do something to 'cause this or like, did your parents
- 2:26do something to 'cause this to? Like when you're in the womb,
- 2:28did your, did your mother live clean?
- 2:29Like, like what? Of course I love my hey, mom, I
- 2:32love you. And like, it's like I've been to
- 2:35the wrong food or skipped too many workouts.
- 2:37They're almost implying that now we don't know exactly what
- 2:40causes Parkinson's. It's like a mix of genetics and
- 2:43environment. Now it's doesn't matter if I ate
- 2:46my broccoli as a kid. And when someone suggests it's
- 2:48your fault, flip it with humor. I usually say if chocolate and
- 2:52coffee cause Parkinson's in the entire country would be shaking
- 2:56right along with me. My coffee, my M&M's, peanut that
- 3:00is. OK, so here is your comment.
- 3:03Check in. What's the craziest thing that
- 3:05you've been blamed for when it comes to Parkinson's?
- 3:09Type it down below. Now Speaking of blame, let's
- 3:13talk about stress. Now I've had people tell me that
- 3:16if you just relaxed more, you wouldn't have Parkinson's or it
- 3:19wouldn't show up. Really.
- 3:21So I should meditate my dopamine back into existence?
- 3:24Well, wouldn't that be nice? Stress doesn't cause
- 3:29Parkinson's. It can make symptoms worse, for
- 3:31sure, absolutely. But it's not the reason that we
- 3:34have it. And here's the tip, when people
- 3:37bring this up, remind them that stress doesn't 'cause it, but
- 3:40laughter definitely will ease it.
- 3:42So if you really want to help me, don't tell me to relax, tell
- 3:45me a joke. If you're nodding along with
- 3:51this, learning something or maybe even laughing, make sure
- 3:53that you hit that subscribe button and give this thing, this
- 3:56video, a like on this podcast because we've got a community
- 3:59here that gets it. And I don't want you to miss out
- 4:01on anything. All right, here's another one
- 4:05that drives me nuts. This idea that once you're
- 4:08diagnosed there's nothing you can do wrong.
- 4:12I am proof of that. I'm still here, still laughing,
- 4:15still living 15 years in, on my third five years cycle of like 5
- 4:20years until it's not going to be good anymore.
- 4:22And I'm on my third one so. And I'm heading to #4 exercise,
- 4:27medication, staying social, they make a huge difference.
- 4:32Even the small things, stretching, walking, moving a
- 4:35little everyday. When someone says there is
- 4:37nothing you can do, tell them that.
- 4:40Tell them what you are doing. Share 1 positive step.
- 4:43It will help your own narrative. OK, so if you did something
- 4:48today to fight Parkinson's, even if it was tiny, but I did down
- 4:52below, put it in the comments. I did.
- 4:54Let's cheer each other on. And while we're at it, let's
- 4:58tackle medication. You know, some people think it's
- 5:01like Tylenol for a headache. Take it and poof, symptoms gone.
- 5:06No levonopa helps, but it's not perfect and some days it works
- 5:10great and other days I feel like Clark tent stuck in molasses.
- 5:16You know, it's just one of those things when people say, but
- 5:19you're on medication, shouldn't you be fine?
- 5:22I just smile and say, you wouldn't tell a diabetic insulin
- 5:25fixes everything, would you? And that usually gets them
- 5:28thinking, here's one that's even sneakier, but it matters.
- 5:34People think Parkinson's symptoms are the same every day
- 5:38and all the Parkinson's all the Parkins out there said no way,
- 5:42no way in the comments. Not a chance.
- 5:45Not a chance if you anyway. It's not even close.
- 5:49Parkinson's is a roller coaster. One day I feel decent, the next
- 5:52day I can barely move. Sometimes mornings are OK, other
- 5:56times they are brutal. And when people say you were
- 5:59fine yesterday him, no, I don't mean hit them, hit them with I
- 6:06mean you want to hit them. I want to hit them when they
- 6:07keep saying that. But anyway, hit them with this
- 6:09line. Parkinson's didn't Parkinson's
- 6:12didn't check my calendar before it showed up today.
- 6:16So let's make this interactive. If you ever had symptoms
- 6:20surprise you, like symptoms surprise you out of nowhere
- 6:23type, out of nowhere in the comments, you know, many, many
- 6:27people are reading the comments and people are just scanning
- 6:30this is they read the comments probably more than they watch
- 6:32me. And so, you know, when you put
- 6:34things in there like like out of nowhere, right, they start
- 6:37feeling less alone because trust me, people are on here right now
- 6:41searching for answers on why they're some symptoms of theirs
- 6:44are coming and going. So if you want to help me help
- 6:46them, just that put that up in the comments.
- 6:48It'll help. OK, moving along.
- 6:52Let's talk about the myth that care partners always know
- 6:55exactly what to do and never struggle.
- 6:58You know, people assume Carmen was given an instruction manual
- 7:01the day I was diagnosed or the day when we got together.
- 7:04Like, she's supposed to be strong 24/7, never complain, and
- 7:08always have the right answer. But the truth, she's figuring it
- 7:12out day by day right alongside me.
- 7:15And I want you to hear it from her.
- 7:20So here's Carmen's care partner Corner, and here's what she told
- 7:23me to say. Hi everyone.
- 7:26It's Carmen. Let me tell you about one of
- 7:28those moments when I really didn't know what to do.
- 7:31A couple of years ago, Bryce froze in the middle of a busy
- 7:33grocery store aisle. People were walking around us,
- 7:36carts bumping by. And I just stood there thinking,
- 7:39like, what do I do? Do I push him?
- 7:41Do I pull him? Do I yell at the lettuce to move
- 7:43out of the way? She's got my sense of humor.
- 7:46I don't know. And honestly, she's I didn't
- 7:50know. And honestly, in that moment, I
- 7:52panicked a little. But then I remembered something
- 7:54simple. Just pause, breathe, and let him
- 7:59work through it. And eventually he did.
- 8:03That's the thing, care partners don't get a manual.
- 8:06We learn on the job and yes, we get frustrated and yes,
- 8:10sometimes we feel helpless and yes, sometimes we want to punch
- 8:13a wall. But it's OK to admit that.
- 8:16So if you're a care partner listening, know this, you don't
- 8:20have to be perfect. You just have to be present and
- 8:24don't forget to take care of yourself too.
- 8:26That's not selfish, it's survival.
- 8:31Wow, you see what I mean? That's the real side of
- 8:35Parkinson's that people don't see.
- 8:36It's not just me going through it, it's both of us.
- 8:40And if you're a care partner watching, I want you to just put
- 8:43this in the comments, but just type.
- 8:45I'm still learning. Still learning because all of us
- 8:49are still learning. Aren't we?
- 8:52OK, let's wrap this up with a little lighter one because this
- 8:55myth that people with Parkinson's can't have fun.
- 8:57Have you ever heard that one? People with Parkinson's can't
- 8:59have fun? Like it's over.
- 9:01I don't know who came up with that, but they're but they've
- 9:04clearly never seen me try to text with a tremor.
- 9:07You know, once I tried sending I'll be late.
- 9:10And what actually sent was like a rock and a frog, a pizza
- 9:12dinosaur and a dancing lady. You know, my buddy thought I was
- 9:15inviting them to a scavenger hunt or something worse.
- 9:18So yeah, Parkinson's changes how you do things, but it doesn't
- 9:22erase fun. In fact, sometimes it makes it.
- 9:25Sometimes it makes for really funny stories.
- 9:29And isn't that something that could make you feel a little bit
- 9:31lighter today? OK, you've made it this far.
- 9:35Here's today's Bryce ISM for you.
- 9:37And I teased it earlier. But with Parkinson's, the
- 9:40biggest myth is that life stops. The fact is, life just changes
- 9:45its rhythm. And it's just, and it's up to us
- 9:48to keep dancing to our new rhythm.
- 9:52OK, now it's your turn. Which of these myths have you
- 9:56heard before? Or better yet, what's the
- 9:59weirdest or funniest myth that you've been told about
- 10:01Parkinson's or asked about Parkinson's?
- 10:03Drop it in the comments below. I want to hear it.
- 10:05And others do. And don't forget, I read and
- 10:07reply to every comment. Now.
- 10:09Don't, don't, don't get mad at me if it takes me a day to get
- 10:12back because I mean, we have a lot of people commenting, but I
- 10:15promise you, I will get to you. And you know what?
- 10:18Don't just lurk around here. If you're just lurking, hit
- 10:20subscribe if you haven't already.
- 10:22This is a community. It's not just a channel.
- 10:24And I'd love for you to be a part of it.
- 10:26And if you're ready for more, check out the link in the
- 10:29description for the inner circle.
- 10:30That's where we go deeper. We share our wins, our wobbles
- 10:33in a private supportive community with each other.
- 10:37Until next time, I want you to keep showing up.
- 10:40I want you to keep being real and you keep doing life today.
