Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Who Could You Show Up For More? Is It Yourself?
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, em Lea Badi here you are listening to
- 0:26Speaker 1: another installment of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. It's funny
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'm actually recording this. I'm in Portland right now, Portland, Oregon.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm here for the weekend to catch up with one
- 0:39Speaker 1: of Hurdle's most listened to guests. I'd be curious to
- 0:45Speaker 1: know if you can guess who that is. And I'm
- 0:48Speaker 1: also here to check out Nike Cross Nationals. I am
- 0:54Speaker 1: so excited to be here. It's my second time coming
- 0:56Speaker 1: to this event. I remember the first time I came,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I was just like so blown up way by the camaraderie.
- 1:02Speaker 1: You know, I only briefly participated in high school sports.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I played volleyball for freshman year, and then I fell
- 1:10Speaker 1: off because I couldn't run a mile in under ten minutes,
- 1:14Speaker 1: which to this day i'm always you know, I feel
- 1:17Speaker 1: some kind of way that that was a credential, but nevertheless,
- 1:20Speaker 1: I never really got to witness firsthand the true impact
- 1:26Speaker 1: of sport on a woman kind of coming into their
- 1:29Speaker 1: own at that age. And so the first time I remember,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I think it was about four or five years ago maybe,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and it was just so impactful to be here, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: I'm so grateful to be back in Oregon for this opportunity.
- 1:42Speaker 1: But anyway, I digress, that's not what a five Minute
- 1:45Speaker 1: Friday is about. This week. I'm laughing, like I said,
- 1:48Speaker 1: because I feel like I'm recording this in like a
- 1:50Speaker 1: dimly lit hotel room. It's dark outside, and I just
- 1:55Speaker 1: had like Delilah vibes, so I was talking in to
- 2:00Speaker 1: this microphone. Did anyone ever listen to Delilah? Is this
- 2:03Speaker 1: just a Connecticut thing? Do she stream all over the country?
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm unsure. Anyway, today for five Minute Friday, what I
- 2:10Speaker 1: really want to talk about outside of my past listening
- 2:14Speaker 1: to Delilah on the radio is something that I was
- 2:19Speaker 1: reminded of this week after I shared my story with
- 2:23Speaker 1: depression and when Live on the Feed last Wednesday. I'll
- 2:26Speaker 1: make sure to put that episode link in the show notes,
- 2:29Speaker 1: but it was just another reminder of that concept that
- 2:34Speaker 1: we hear so often reiterated, that you really don't know
- 2:37Speaker 1: what's going on with someone unless you really make an
- 2:41Speaker 1: effort to ask them, and that we may so often
- 2:45Speaker 1: think that we have a concept of what's going on
- 2:48Speaker 1: with someone in their life based on what we see
- 2:50Speaker 1: on social media when that is just not always the
- 2:54Speaker 1: case right. An important reminder because it is easy to
- 2:58Speaker 1: make those some based off of what someone may share
- 3:03Speaker 1: on their own quote unquote highlight reel. I was messaged
- 3:09Speaker 1: by so many of you over the last week and
- 3:12Speaker 1: a half about your experiences, both with maybe a similar
- 3:17Speaker 1: situation with navigating anxiety and depression, and then also with
- 3:21Speaker 1: other things, and there was one interaction in particular that
- 3:25Speaker 1: really touched me with someone that I would say I
- 3:28Speaker 1: don't necessarily have a great relationship with, but we have
- 3:32Speaker 1: work together in the past, and after seeing what I
- 3:37Speaker 1: shared on Instagram about my experience with depression, she messaged
- 3:40Speaker 1: me and opened up about hers and I was so
- 3:44Speaker 1: touched that she would feel comfortable to do that, that
- 3:48Speaker 1: she would feel as though it was a welcome thing
- 3:53Speaker 1: for her to message me, not necessarily out of the blue,
- 3:56Speaker 1: because as I mentioned, I did share my experience, but
- 4:00Speaker 1: after her and I haven't spoken for some time, to
- 4:03Speaker 1: tell me what she'd been through and tell me also
- 4:09Speaker 1: how my story really impacted her. And aside from those
- 4:16Speaker 1: sentiments of you just don't know what someone's going through offline,
- 4:20Speaker 1: it really was a moment for me to remember the
- 4:28Speaker 1: opportunity just to be good, right, just to be a
- 4:31Speaker 1: kind person, just to listen. And I've said this on
- 4:38Speaker 1: the show before. You know, we learned by listening, we
- 4:40Speaker 1: don't learn by speaking. And in this moment, I recognize
- 4:45Speaker 1: that it was really an opportunity for her to speak,
- 4:49Speaker 1: to speak her truth, for someone to hear her out,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and I was happy to be there to do that
- 4:56Speaker 1: for her. It also, this whole situ really reminds me
- 5:02Speaker 1: of how maybe I feel on the inverse side when
- 5:06Speaker 1: someone I care about is going through something that I
- 5:09Speaker 1: may not really fully comprehend. Right at this point, I've
- 5:13Speaker 1: had a few different girlfriends now go through the IVF process,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and it's truly heartbreaking to know that they're struggling and
- 5:21Speaker 1: also know that I can't really sympathize truly with what
- 5:25Speaker 1: they're going through. I've connected some of my friends who
- 5:31Speaker 1: are going through a similar struggle, so to speak, to
- 5:35Speaker 1: talk to one another about that struggle, because I know
- 5:38Speaker 1: that it is just easier to connect with someone who
- 5:40Speaker 1: truly does understand. And so this week I was reminded
- 5:47Speaker 1: that there's nothing wrong, so to speak, with not understanding.
- 5:53Speaker 1: There is something wrong when you can't have sympathy maybe
- 5:56Speaker 1: for someone in their time of trouble, but there's nothing
- 5:59Speaker 1: wrong with not fully understanding if you haven't been through
- 6:03Speaker 1: that situation, how could you. But we can always be
- 6:07Speaker 1: kind to one another, and we also owe it to
- 6:11Speaker 1: ourselves to have grace when there is a situation that
- 6:14Speaker 1: we may not be able to show up as we
- 6:16Speaker 1: wish that we could. There is nothing I want more
- 6:20Speaker 1: than to be able to provide absolutely everything I could
- 6:23Speaker 1: for my good friends who are maybe trying to conceive
- 6:26Speaker 1: in having trouble. But I just myself have never been
- 6:30Speaker 1: through that hurdle, and so I can ask and offer
- 6:35Speaker 1: and be there in the capacity that I have shown
- 6:40Speaker 1: that I can. But I can't get down on myself
- 6:45Speaker 1: for not being perhaps the person that they need to
- 6:49Speaker 1: talk to during that time. And that's just all of
- 6:53Speaker 1: this some of my learnings in the last couple of weeks. Again,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I do want to say thank you to so many
- 6:59Speaker 1: of you who have reached out and who have been
- 7:01Speaker 1: open with me on your journey. And I hope that again,
- 7:04Speaker 1: by sharing what I've been through, it makes some of
- 7:09Speaker 1: you feel a little bit less alone and whatever it
- 7:11Speaker 1: is that you're navigating. My prompt for you this week?
- 7:17Speaker 1: Who is someone that you could better show up for?
- 7:23Speaker 1: Who is someone in your life that you could better
- 7:28Speaker 1: show up for? And by the way, it's okay if
- 7:33Speaker 1: that person is yourself. And now a listener question.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, your last five Minute Friday just kind of
- 7:45Speaker 2: brought this up for me, and I was curious. I
- 7:46Speaker 2: don't know if you've touched on it before in a
- 7:48Speaker 2: previous episode, so thanks, feel free to say that. But
- 7:53Speaker 2: I follow Instagram, I guess influencer track club Bait, and
- 8:00Speaker 2: she talks a lot about easy runs, and so I
- 8:05Speaker 2: was curious kind of touching based on easy runs and
- 8:11Speaker 2: how they help you run faster and going based off
- 8:17Speaker 2: of effort instead of time. I find that for me personally,
- 8:22Speaker 2: like the time doesn't make me feel pressured. It helps
- 8:27Speaker 2: me kind of base where I'm at and I need
- 8:29Speaker 2: to go faster do I need to go slower? But
- 8:32Speaker 2: I'm just curious more about the impact of easy running
- 8:35Speaker 2: on your long term game.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Okay, this is a good one, you know. I think
- 8:41Speaker 1: that it's easy to get competitive with ourselves and want
- 8:44Speaker 1: to pick up the pace. I could say that like
- 8:47Speaker 1: physically literally and also kind of metaphorically as well, we
- 8:53Speaker 1: can get competitive with ourselves and the point of taking
- 8:58Speaker 1: things easy, the point of taking things slow, the point
- 9:01Speaker 1: of maybe having some grace with yourself, is that it
- 9:05Speaker 1: provides the opportunity to recover. If we want to perform
- 9:12Speaker 1: at our best, there are going to be times where
- 9:15Speaker 1: we need to take it easy, period, and the easy runs,
- 9:20Speaker 1: so to speak, those easy moments are what gives your
- 9:26Speaker 1: body the runway that it needs to show up and
- 9:30Speaker 1: put out during those hard efforts. You know, I follow
- 9:34Speaker 1: this person that you mentioned on Instagram as well, and
- 9:38Speaker 1: I totally see where she's coming from. Right. For us
- 9:43Speaker 1: to really be able to put our body through the ringer,
- 9:48Speaker 1: if you will, you've got to let your body recover.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And that's the point of those easy runs, that active recovery.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:00Speaker 1: There are going to be times and places for us
- 10:04Speaker 1: to really push ourselves to the limit. But if you
- 10:07Speaker 1: do that each and every day, then you're going to
- 10:09Speaker 1: realize really fast that you are and will be exhausted.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So be easy on yourself. Feel free to take it
- 10:20Speaker 1: easy both in your runs and in your life, knowing
- 10:24Speaker 1: that this grace will empower you to maybe get that
- 10:29Speaker 1: extra edge to go after the more taxing effort that
- 10:34Speaker 1: you have been thinking about for some time, and know
- 10:39Speaker 1: that it's okay if you've got to, like, you know,
- 10:44Speaker 1: unplug a little bit, because we all do get competitive,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and yes we even get competitive with one another. But
- 10:51Speaker 1: you've got to do what feels good for you and
- 10:53Speaker 1: your body, whether it's actually an easy run or maybe
- 10:59Speaker 1: you need to just be easy on yourself and your emotions.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I hope that's hopeful. Make sure you're following along with
- 11:08Speaker 1: me over on socials. It's over at Hurdle Podcast and
