- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh God, oh God, Why couldn't have someone stopped him?
- 0:04Speaker 2: Keep doing this to me?
- 0:08Speaker 3: Christine, I'm looking at for the rest of for the
- 0:13Speaker 3: murder of Ian Wawhood.
- 0:16Speaker 4: You're watching totally true crime. In the early nineteen nineties,
- 0:22Speaker 4: a man called Ian Rawle was selling a car in
- 0:25Speaker 4: the County of Devon in the south of England. A
- 0:28Speaker 4: woman called Christine came over to buy the car. She
- 0:32Speaker 4: was homeless and she had three children. Her marriage had
- 0:35Speaker 4: failed and she was trying to rebuild her life. Ian
- 0:39Speaker 4: was with another woman at the time, but something sparked
- 0:42Speaker 4: between them at that meeting and they soon became an item.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Ian took on her three children as his own, and
- 0:50Speaker 4: their relationship was intense. Christine would tell her friends that
- 0:55Speaker 4: Ian was all over her like a rash, and friends
- 0:58Speaker 4: described her a smitten But whilst this relationship was intense,
- 1:03Speaker 4: it was also volatile. Between nineteen ninety two and nineteen
- 1:07Speaker 4: ninety four, the pair made a total of five police
- 1:10Speaker 4: reports on each other. On one occasion, Christine reported that
- 1:14Speaker 4: Ian had vandalized her car. On another report, she said
- 1:18Speaker 4: that he had thrown a statue through her window. He
- 1:22Speaker 4: said that she had filled his car with water by
- 1:26Speaker 4: putting a hose pipe through the sun roof, and on
- 1:29Speaker 4: another occasion she broke into his house. But despite this,
- 1:33Speaker 4: the couple stayed together and ended up moving in with
- 1:36Speaker 4: each other, and they soon got married. They were financially
- 1:40Speaker 4: well off and they lived in a large house which
- 1:44Speaker 4: had twenty acres of farmland. They had a love hate
- 1:48Speaker 4: relationship and it wasn't a secret. Their friends and family
- 1:52Speaker 4: had witnessed their infatuation for each other, but also their tempers.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Ian allegedly would be aggressive towards Christine's children. When her
- 2:02Speaker 4: son Thomas was young, Ian threw a hot ashtray at
- 2:06Speaker 4: his leg, causing a severe burn. Christine attacked Ian in retaliation,
- 2:13Speaker 4: stabbing him in the arm and chest. The injuries weren't
- 2:17Speaker 4: life threatening, but he needed medical attention, so he went
- 2:20Speaker 4: to the hospital for treatment. Whilst he was there, the
- 2:24Speaker 4: police were called and they tried to prosecute Christine with
- 2:27Speaker 4: grievous bodily harm, but when Ian refused to cooperate with
- 2:31Speaker 4: the investigation, she was acquitted of all charges. They continued
- 2:35Speaker 4: to live together, but it was only a few years
- 2:37Speaker 4: later that the police would be called to their house again.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Over the next few years, Christine would call the police
- 2:44Speaker 4: and tell them that Ian had been violent to her.
- 2:47Speaker 4: On one occasion, he'd hit her square in the face.
- 2:50Speaker 4: On another occasion, he had urinated in her drawers and
- 2:55Speaker 4: hit her with a shovel. But he would also call
- 2:58Speaker 4: the police on her that she was hitting him. Christine
- 3:03Speaker 4: was a well known horse whisperer in layman's terms, she
- 3:07Speaker 4: was an animal behaviorist and she owned horses which they
- 3:11Speaker 4: kept on their land. In one incident, Thomas Christine's youngest
- 3:16Speaker 4: son said he witnessed Ian strike his mother with a
- 3:19Speaker 4: riding crop, which quote split her face in half. The
- 3:25Speaker 4: violence between the pair was frequent and often severe. Thomas
- 3:30Speaker 4: Christine's son said that Ian was the main aggressor in
- 3:34Speaker 4: the relationship. Ian would often put his wife down, calling
- 3:39Speaker 4: her fat, lazy, and a slob, and he would also
- 3:43Speaker 4: allegedly play cruel mind games with her. Christine had told
- 3:48Speaker 4: her friends that she suspected Ian was the person who
- 3:52Speaker 4: kept opening the gate to the field where she kept
- 3:55Speaker 4: her horses, knowing that they would likely walk out into
- 3:59Speaker 4: oncoming traffic. Ian would often hide her keys, her phone,
- 4:04Speaker 4: and her purse. He'd block her car in so she
- 4:07Speaker 4: couldn't go out, and in return, Christine would call Hymn
- 4:12Speaker 4: names and lash out towards him. Christine suffered with a
- 4:16Speaker 4: few medical conditions, and an issue with one of her
- 4:19Speaker 4: legs led her to being registered disabled. Thomas said that
- 4:23Speaker 4: he'd witnessed Ian kick his mother in her bad leg
- 4:27Speaker 4: whilst he wore steel toed shoes, and on one occasion
- 4:31Speaker 4: he threw his wife through a glass window. But to
- 4:35Speaker 4: the outside world, Christine looked as though she was living
- 4:39Speaker 4: a happy and privileged life. On her Facebook page, she
- 4:43Speaker 4: would post photos of her smiling with her horses. She
- 4:46Speaker 4: shared reviews of spa facilities, and photos of family and
- 4:50Speaker 4: friends gathered in a kitchen for a New Year's Eve
- 4:53Speaker 4: party was one of her most liked posts, but she
- 4:57Speaker 4: also shared some quotes that had dark undertones. In one
- 5:02Speaker 4: quote by Albert Einstein that she shared, it said the
- 5:06Speaker 4: world will not be destroyed by those who do evil,
- 5:09Speaker 4: but by those who watched them without doing anything. Another
- 5:14Speaker 4: quote she shared said someone said to me, I don't
- 5:17Speaker 4: know how you do it. I replied, I wasn't given
- 5:21Speaker 4: a choice. But on the twenty first of August twenty
- 5:25Speaker 4: twenty two, Christine wouldn't share any more quotes or any
- 5:30Speaker 4: more pictures on her social media. Christine's marriage was finally
- 5:35Speaker 4: looking like it was over. She'd moved into a barn
- 5:38Speaker 4: on their land, and she had told friends that she
- 5:41Speaker 4: wanted a divorce. She'd been asking Ian for money so
- 5:45Speaker 4: she could move out. He said he didn't have any,
- 5:49Speaker 4: so she was trying to get him to sell a
- 5:51Speaker 4: piece of their farmland that she could use to buy
- 5:54Speaker 4: somewhere new. She also wanted a private eye operation, and
- 5:58Speaker 4: she wanted Ian to give her the mone need to
- 6:00Speaker 4: have it. Ian, who was now seventy two years old,
- 6:04Speaker 4: resented the fact that he was still working to keep
- 6:06Speaker 4: them afloat, and the couple would often rowl over this.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Christine had taken to film in their rows on her
- 6:13Speaker 4: mobile phone.
- 6:15Speaker 2: All of it.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I've not instigated anything, and I've just said to you.
- 6:21Speaker 4: You sat there and started, and it's been going on
- 6:23Speaker 4: ever since you started it.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Not me tell me what I've done wrong. I just
- 6:30Speaker 1: asked you to stop it. You just want to bankrupt
- 6:33Speaker 1: everybody like.
- 6:33Speaker 2: You Steve.
- 6:36Speaker 1: You did, and you only got your money because someone
- 6:39Speaker 1: left it to you. Dear that the council fucking foreman.
- 6:43Speaker 1: That's hardly a fucking brain surgeon, is it? Who do
- 6:46Speaker 1: you think you? Are? You?
- 6:49Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 6:49Speaker 3: Kept me?
- 6:52Speaker 4: What do you mean? I had a disability allowance?
- 6:55Speaker 1: I've not been well?
- 6:56Speaker 3: Oh yes, that because you planned on you played for Tom.
- 7:00Speaker 4: I claim for Tom. In another video, they're accusing each
- 7:07Speaker 4: other of having alcohol issues.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I've been drinking what you're drinking?
- 7:16Speaker 1: Ginger beer and nothing? No ginger beer. Yeah, ginger beer, mccordy,
- 7:25Speaker 1: because I cared.
- 7:26Speaker 4: How dare you?
- 7:27Speaker 1: How dare you?
- 7:28Speaker 3: You're the one with a drink problem. I'm going to
- 7:31Speaker 3: drink you do.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You're an alcohol.
- 7:37Speaker 3: As I've had my blood as Tom.
- 7:40Speaker 4: When he was here Christmas, when you invited Matthew Rod
- 7:43Speaker 4: and then you passed out because you were drunk. In
- 7:46Speaker 4: this clip, Ian can see that Christine is recording him.
- 7:50Speaker 1: You know, tell me what you think I should have
- 7:53Speaker 1: brought to the table. You knew that I wasn't well
- 7:55Speaker 1: when you met me, and you last years. Do you
- 8:00Speaker 1: think I've only been married twenty years? You don't even
- 8:03Speaker 1: know how long you've been fucking married. To carry on,
- 8:08Speaker 1: I'll tell you what you are. Love this and anything
- 8:12Speaker 1: else to say. They're going to love this, anything else
- 8:15Speaker 1: to say contribut right right, and do you know what
- 8:20Speaker 1: you are? A useless eater, ignorant. You are only surprised
- 8:24Speaker 1: by your stupidity. You cancel foreman, You're only ill me.
- 8:30Speaker 4: The twenty first of August twenty twenty two was a
- 8:33Speaker 4: Sunday and Christine was mucking out her horses when her
- 8:37Speaker 4: husband approached her. She'd been suffering with a bad shoulder,
- 8:41Speaker 4: so he'd come out to help her. A row ensued,
- 8:44Speaker 4: and he pushed a wheelbarrow of manure towards the mucky
- 8:48Speaker 4: and Christine snapped. She grabbed a knife that she'd used
- 8:52Speaker 4: to cut some cord to tie up the gates for
- 8:54Speaker 4: her horses, and she started to stab her husband in
- 8:58Speaker 4: the back. She was on the phone to her daughter
- 9:01Speaker 4: when she struck him. Her daughter called nine ninety nine,
- 9:05Speaker 4: and an operator called Christine to try and arrange help
- 9:08Speaker 4: for Ian. When the police arrived, they found Christine in tears.
- 9:15Speaker 4: He speaks, he's narcissistic. I don't know who this ribed,
- 9:19Speaker 4: what it was?
- 9:22Speaker 3: Oh?
- 9:22Speaker 4: Please, such a cruel I really get Christine away.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Sorry, it was fine, It's fine.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Can you love someone?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Can you would? You have to think of someone and
- 9:46Speaker 2: they're so.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Calculatingly nasty to you. They put her in the back
- 9:55Speaker 4: of the police van, and she continued to tell the
- 9:58Speaker 4: arresting officers about the abuse that she had suffered at
- 10:01Speaker 4: the hands of Ian.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I've been living up the top and it's been boiling them,
- 10:07Speaker 2: my dogs and my horses. Here, he'll come and get me.
- 10:13Speaker 2: You'll come and get me. You'll come and get me.
- 10:17Speaker 2: He'll kill me.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Oh god, oh god. Why couldn't have someone stopped him
- 10:22Speaker 1: keep doing this to me.
- 10:27Speaker 4: I've tried that many times.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I tried the other day to phone the police, and
- 10:31Speaker 3: it takes forever, forever them to pick up.
- 10:34Speaker 2: And you can't do a nine ninety nine and say
- 10:37Speaker 2: he's just shouting at me again.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Ian Rawle died from his injuries. The crime scene investigators
- 10:44Speaker 4: discovered that Christine had watched her husband struggle to move
- 10:48Speaker 4: over one hundred meters to try to get help. The
- 10:52Speaker 4: pathologist noted that the twelve inch NiFe was pushed right
- 10:56Speaker 4: into Ian's back up to the hilt it had gone
- 11:00Speaker 4: through to pierce his lung. In her police interview, Christine
- 11:04Speaker 4: said that Ian had been violent and had threatened to
- 11:08Speaker 4: kill her. She was claiming self defense.
- 11:12Speaker 3: I had said to him, I can't put up with
- 11:15Speaker 3: the way you're treating me. I'm going to divorce you anyway, Okay,
- 11:19Speaker 3: because you can have someone do these things to you.
- 11:24Speaker 3: You can't live as a second class citizen.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You can't be told that you've got the rights. You
- 11:30Speaker 4: can't be told that someone's going to kill you.
- 11:33Speaker 1: But I don't remember.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Any of it, Okay. I was absolutely petrified. Absolutely.
- 11:39Speaker 4: The police now had to determine whether Christine had stabbed
- 11:43Speaker 4: Ian in self defense or whether she had committed murder. Thomas,
- 11:48Speaker 4: Christine's son, said that he had witnessed his mother being
- 11:51Speaker 4: abused by Ian for years, and he said he hadn't
- 11:55Speaker 4: felt like he was able to help. They were likened
- 11:58Speaker 4: to the role dull parent as the Twits, a couple
- 12:02Speaker 4: who had a dysfunctional marriage and seemed to take pleasure
- 12:06Speaker 4: in making each other's lives a misery. In a transcript
- 12:10Speaker 4: of Christine's nine nine nine calls, she's heard saying, quote,
- 12:14Speaker 4: you bastard, You've been such a bastard to me. She
- 12:18Speaker 4: then tells the operator that he was going on and
- 12:22Speaker 4: on at me and that she was watching him die
- 12:26Speaker 4: in front of her. One of the couple's neighbors told
- 12:29Speaker 4: investigators that Ian was vindictive and unpleasant to his wife.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Christine's friends told the police that she had waited on
- 12:37Speaker 4: Ian hand and foot, but he had called her useless
- 12:41Speaker 4: and lazy. But they also discovered that Ian had told
- 12:45Speaker 4: a work colleague that he thought he was being abused
- 12:48Speaker 4: by Christine and he was trying to find a support
- 12:51Speaker 4: service to help him. Ian had also been seen with
- 12:54Speaker 4: a black eye, which he had said was inflicted on
- 12:57Speaker 4: him by his wife. Another witness said that Christine had
- 13:01Speaker 4: told her that she liked to play tricks on her
- 13:04Speaker 4: husband to wind him up. She'd do things like allegedly
- 13:08Speaker 4: put viagra in his tea, wipe her backside with his ties,
- 13:13Speaker 4: and put chili in his underwear. On the morning that
- 13:17Speaker 4: Ian died, Christine had been texting a friend about their
- 13:20Speaker 4: marriage problems, and in her texts she had told her
- 13:24Speaker 4: friend that she hoped that he would die. The police
- 13:27Speaker 4: were dealing with two very different narratives. I discovered a
- 13:31Speaker 4: letter that Christine had written to one of her children
- 13:34Speaker 4: in twenty fifteen, and in it she admitted that she
- 13:38Speaker 4: wasn't perfect. She had said, quote I am who I am?
- 13:43Speaker 4: Granddad would hit me and I wouldn't give in, so
- 13:46Speaker 4: he would hit me some more. We had a huge
- 13:48Speaker 4: fight one day and I nearly killed him. My life
- 13:52Speaker 4: was hard and unjust. I developed a nasty temper, which
- 13:57Speaker 4: you have seen many times. I now understand just why
- 14:01Speaker 4: men were attracted to me. I looked like a girl,
- 14:05Speaker 4: but I was strong like a man. What they thought
- 14:08Speaker 4: was appealing became a nightmare for them. I've made a
- 14:11Speaker 4: lot of people, particularly a lot of men's lives hell.
- 14:16Speaker 4: I made them feel inadequate. The smart ones fucked off.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Before the trial, Christine told the police that Ian had
- 14:24Speaker 4: subjected her to sexual abuse. This was never proven, and
- 14:28Speaker 4: the prosecution believed that she was trying to build her
- 14:30Speaker 4: case for self defense by fabricating these claims. Christine's trials
- 14:36Speaker 4: started in the spring of twenty twenty four at Exeter
- 14:39Speaker 4: Crown Court. She didn't give evidence, but her defense argued
- 14:44Speaker 4: that she'd been a victim of domestic abuse and that
- 14:47Speaker 4: she'd finally snapped, believing Ian was going to kill her
- 14:51Speaker 4: that day. After they continue to argue about selling a
- 14:55Speaker 4: piece of farmland. Christine's best friend, a woman called Alie Albert,
- 15:01Speaker 4: told the jury that Christine had called her after the
- 15:04Speaker 4: incident to tell her what had happened and to complain
- 15:08Speaker 4: about her husband's behavior. The pair had been due to
- 15:12Speaker 4: me for coffee that morning. Ali had been delayed as
- 15:15Speaker 4: she was out walking her dogs. She said, Christine called
- 15:19Speaker 4: her at two thirty pm and said, quote, he's dead.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Ali asked what happened, and Christine told her that she
- 15:29Speaker 4: wanted Allie to look after the animals. Alie said, quote
- 15:34Speaker 4: she said. He went on and on and on at me.
- 15:37Speaker 4: It was a very short phone call. He would constantly
- 15:41Speaker 4: put her down, swear at her a lot. He would
- 15:44Speaker 4: accuse her of being stupid, lazy, and useless. Christine was
- 15:50Speaker 4: unhappy and she was unwell. She loved him, She wanted
- 15:53Speaker 4: to make things work, but it got to the point
- 15:56Speaker 4: that the only option she saw was divorce. She loved
- 16:00Speaker 4: the animals and if she left them, she didn't have
- 16:03Speaker 4: any idea how they would be looked after, and she
- 16:07Speaker 4: would be away from them. She's amazing around horses. She
- 16:10Speaker 4: exudes calmness around them. She's helped a lot of people.
- 16:14Speaker 4: People would come in with any issue and should be
- 16:17Speaker 4: able to retrain the horses. But Christine was upset, depressed,
- 16:23Speaker 4: and she would cry every day. The jury heard from
- 16:26Speaker 4: the prosecution, who detailed the instances that Ian had called
- 16:30Speaker 4: the police for help in the past. They were played
- 16:33Speaker 4: the videos of them arguing, and after just three hours
- 16:36Speaker 4: of deliberation, the jury came back with their verdict. They
- 16:40Speaker 4: found Christine guilty of murder and she was sentenced to
- 16:44Speaker 4: life in prison and ordered to serve a minimum term
- 16:47Speaker 4: of seventeen years. She was seventy years old. Thank you
