- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 17 Dear Lord, please let us see what you would
- 0:05like us to see as we read through this chapter today.
- 0:09We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. 2 eagles and of mine the word of
- 0:14the Lord came to me. Son of Man set forth an
- 0:17allegory. Tell it to the Israelites as a
- 0:20parable. Say to them, this is what the
- 0:24Sovereign Lord says. A great eagle with powerful
- 0:28wings, long feathers and full plumage of varied colours came
- 0:34to Lebanon. Taking hold of the top cedar, he
- 0:39broke off its top MO chute and carried it away to a land of
- 0:43merchants, where he planted it in a city of traders.
- 0:47He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile
- 0:50soil. He planted it like a Willow by
- 0:54abundant water, and it sprouted and became a low spreading vine.
- 0:59Its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it.
- 1:04So it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy bows.
- 1:11But there was another eagle with powerful wings and full plumage.
- 1:16The vine now sent out its roots toward him from the plot where
- 1:22it was planted, and stretched out its branches to him for
- 1:26water. It had been planted in good soil
- 1:29by abundant water, so it would produce branches, bear fruit,
- 1:33and become a splendid vine. Say to them, this is what the
- 1:37Sovereign Lord says. Will it thrive?
- 1:41Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it
- 1:45Withers All its new growth will wither?
- 1:48It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by the
- 1:52roots it has been planted, but will it thrive?
- 1:56Will it not wither completely when the east wind strikes it
- 2:00wither away in the plot where it grew?
- 2:04Then the word of the Lord came to me, Say to this rebellious
- 2:08people, Do you not know what these things mean?
- 2:12Say to them The king of Babylon went to Jerusalem and carried
- 2:17off her king and her nobles, bringing them back with him to
- 2:21Babylon. Then he took a member of the
- 2:25royal family and made a treaty with him, putting him underoath.
- 2:29He also carried away the leading men of the land so the Kingdom
- 2:33would be brought low, unable to rise again, surviving only by
- 2:38keeping his treaty. But the king rebelled against
- 2:42him by sending his envoys to Egypt to get horses and a large
- 2:47army. Will he succeed?
- 2:50Will he who does such things escape?
- 2:53Will he break the treaty and yet escape as surely as I live,
- 2:58declares the sovereign Lord. He shall die in Babylon, in the
- 3:02land of the king who put him on the throne, whose oath he
- 3:07despised, and whose treaty he broke.
- 3:10Pharaoh with his mighty army and great horde will be of no help
- 3:14to him in war when ramps are built and siege works erect to
- 3:18destroy many lives. He despised the oath by breaking
- 3:22the covenant, because he he had given his hand in pledge and yet
- 3:28did all these things. He shall not escape.
- 3:31Therefore this is what the sovereign, Sovereign Lord says.
- 3:36As surely as I live, I will repay him for despising my oath
- 3:42and breaking my covenant. I will spread my net for him,
- 3:47and he will be caught in my snare.
- 3:50I will bring him to Babylon and execute judgment on him there
- 3:54because because he was unfaithful to me, all his choice
- 4:00troops will fall by the sword, and their survivors will be
- 4:04scattered to the winds. Then you will know that I, the
- 4:08Lord, have spoken. This is what the Sovereign Lord
- 4:12says. I myself will take a shoot from
- 4:15the very top of a cedar and plant it.
- 4:19I will break off a tender spring from its topmost shoots and
- 4:24plant it on a high and lofty mountain.
- 4:28On the mountain heights of Israel.
- 4:30I will plant it. It will produce branches and
- 4:34bear fruit and become a splendid cedar.
- 4:37Birds of every kind will nest in it.
- 4:40They will find shelter in the shade of its branches.
- 4:44All the trees of the forest will know that I, the Lord, bring
- 4:47down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall.
- 4:52I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish.
- 4:57I, the Lord have spoken and I will do it.
- 5:01So that was Ezekiel 17. I will read the questions and
- 5:07answers and then probably read Exploring Ezekiel a little
- 5:11section that Amir Sarfati wrote in his book because he has some
- 5:17good insight there. So why did God tell Ezekiel to
- 5:22speak through allegory and parable?
- 5:25By speaking in riddles, allegories, or parables, Ezekiel
- 5:28invited the hearer into the word of the story.
- 5:32When pure invectives are spoken, they can harden the will of the
- 5:37hearer. When a story is told, the hearer
- 5:40is not as cautious. Before the hearer knows it, he
- 5:43or she is in the midst of the story as a main character and
- 5:47quite possibly under indictment. Recall Nathan's story to David
- 5:52after David had slept with Bathsheba.
- 5:54That's found in Second Samuel chapter 12.
- 5:57Before David knew it, he had indicted himself.
- 6:01What do eagles? What do the eagles represent?
- 6:05The Lord explains this parable in verses 11 through 15.
- 6:09The first eagle stands for the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar,
- 6:12who deported Judas Jehoiachin, the top of the cedar in 597 BC.
- 6:19The seedlings and the vine represent the remnant left by
- 6:23Nebuchadnezzar in the land under the authority of King Zedekiah.
- 6:28This vine sent out roots toward a second eagle, which represents
- 6:33Egypt, to whom Zedekiah looked for help in his effort to free
- 6:37Judah from the Babylonian rule. So if you look at scripture and
- 6:43you search eagle, you will see that the eagle is not usually it
- 6:49it Sometimes there are comparisons to the quickness on
- 6:55the, the swiftness, I guess of the flight of an eagle.
- 6:59And a lot of the traits of an eagle are used as you know, a
- 7:05description of how something will happen.
- 7:08But originally in Leviticus 11/13 and Deuteronomy 1412, it
- 7:16really describes an eagle as something unclean.
- 7:20So in Leviticus 11/13 it says, and these you shall regard as an
- 7:26abomination among the among the birds.
- 7:29They shall not be eaten. They are an abomination, the
- 7:34eagle, the Vulture, the Buzzard, and the same, you know, I think
- 7:39Deuteronomy 1412 is repeating this.
- 7:42But these you shall not eat the eagle, the Vulture, the Buzzard.
- 7:46So these are the, you know, that's really not like the
- 7:51eagle's not a good thing. And it's kind of interesting
- 7:54because he uses those birds to describe Babylon and also Egypt.
- 8:01So OK, going back to the questions answered carried off
- 8:05her king. The account of this Babylonian
- 8:08victory over Judah and the captivity of Judas king can be
- 8:12found in Second Kings 24 verses 10 through 16 and Second
- 8:16Chronicles 36 verses 9 through 10.
- 8:20These events took place in 597 BC.
- 8:25Is it wrong to rebel against evil rulers?
- 8:28There are times when God calls on His people to rebel against
- 8:32wicked rulers. For example, the Israelites
- 8:36released from Pharaoh in Exodus chapter 12 through 14.
- 8:40Rising up against the king of Babylon would have been
- 8:44fruitless, however, because he was God's agent to execute just
- 8:49punishment. And God had told them, you know,
- 8:52through prophecies, through Jeremiah, that those who would
- 8:55go into exile, they should, you know, basically just start
- 9:00living there and having children and doing all the normal things.
- 9:04And he didn't say anything about rebelling.
- 9:07But people didn't really believe Jeremiah, so God warned them in
- 9:11advance. And he said anybody who stayed
- 9:13in Jerusalem at that time would end up dying by the sword.
- 9:17But people did stay behind and they, you know, they didn't
- 9:22listen to any of these prophecies.
- 9:24So what are ramps and siege works?
- 9:27During siege warfare, attackers sometimes erected earthen mounds
- 9:31and ramps against the city walls.
- 9:33Siege engines were wheeled up on these ramps.
- 9:35From inside the engines, Archers fired arrows at the city's
- 9:40defenders, while others smashed the walls with battering Rams.
- 9:44Such implements of war are useless in fighting God's
- 9:49judgement. So what new shoot would the Lord
- 9:53plant? The new shoot from the cedar,
- 9:55which symbolizes Judah's king, stands for a future king through
- 10:00whom the Lord would restore the glory of David's dynasty and the
- 10:06nation. Jesus the Messiah fulfilled this
- 10:09prophecy and that's the end of chapter 17.
- 10:13Like I said, I'm going to read a little bit from Exploring
- 10:17Ezekiel, which is a new book by Amir Sarfati.
- 10:21You can get it on Amazon or probably at his website,
- 10:25beholdisrael.org. So this is regarding the same
- 10:31chapter that we're reading. So in that short, he's talking
- 10:35about the the kings, and he said in that this is Amir's book.
- 10:42In that short explanation we find 4 kings, one covenant and
- 10:46one rebellion. The first king is easy to
- 10:48recognize, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.
- 10:51In 597 BC, this first eagle made his second trip to Jerusalem, at
- 10:58which time he deposed the second king, the cedar branch, Israel's
- 11:02king Draconia, in his seed, the Babylonian, and placed the ex
- 11:09King's uncle Zedekiah, the third king, who is also the vine, on
- 11:14the throne. Zedekiah promised to be a good
- 11:18little vassal, swearing an oath and making a covenant with
- 11:21Nebuchadnezzar. When the invading army returned
- 11:24to Babylon, they took with them the ex king Jeconiah and a bunch
- 11:32of other exiles including Ezekiel.
- 11:36All went well for a while, but vassal ship didn't wear well on
- 11:40Zedekiah. Earlier Judah had driven away
- 11:43Assyria, why couldn't it do the same with Babylon?
- 11:47To up their rebellion odds, Zedekiah sent ambassadors S to
- 11:53Egypt, a nation that was also getting tired of Babylon's
- 11:58bullying. There they met with Pharaoh
- 12:01Hafra, the 4th king and the second eagle, who promised help.
- 12:07That didn't go well with God, as Joshua and the Israelites
- 12:12learned when they made a treaty with the lion Gibeonites as they
- 12:16were conquering the Promised Land.
- 12:18A covenant is a covenant no matter who it's with.
- 12:23Read Joshua Chapter 9. If you break it, you will pay
- 12:27the price. In fact, David was forced to
- 12:30deal with the consequences of his predecessor, King Saul,
- 12:34breaking that very same treaty Joshua had made with the
- 12:39Gibbonites so many years before. I've got no great love for the
- 12:44Gibbonites, but I'm encouraged by the depth of God's commitment
- 12:48to keeping one's word. That is what gives me hope for
- 12:51the future for my people Israel, as well As for myself as a
- 12:56believing member of the church. Because of King Zedekiah
- 13:00treachery in breaking his covenant, God pronounced
- 13:03judgment. Thus says the Lord God, as as I
- 13:09live surely my oath which he despised, and my covenant which
- 13:13he broke, I will recompense on his head.
- 13:16I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my
- 13:20snare. I will bring him to Babylon and
- 13:22try him there for the treason which he committed against me.
- 13:27All his fugitives with all his troops shall fall by the sword,
- 13:31and those who remain shall be scattered to every wind, and you
- 13:35shall know that I, the Lord have spoken.
- 13:38Ezekiel 17, verses 19 through 21.
- 13:42As we've already seen, Zedekiah was blinded after seeing his
- 13:46sons killed in front of him in Babylon.
- 13:49He was tried and in Babylon he was imprisoned until death.
- 13:54The story doesn't end there, however.
- 13:56Remember, when there is bad news from God, you need only to read
- 14:01a little further to discover some hope.
- 14:03The Lord told Ezekiel that He himself will plant a branch on
- 14:08the mountain height of Israel. The branch will take root, grow,
- 14:14and spread his branches wide enough for birds from all over
- 14:18to come dwell within them. He concluded by saying, All the
- 14:23trees of the field shall know that I, the Lord, have brought
- 14:27down the high tree and exalted the low tree, dried up the green
- 14:32tree, and made the dry tree flourish.
- 14:35I, the Lord have spoken and have done it.
- 14:38Verse 24. God will make the dry tree
- 14:41flourish. That did not happen immediately
- 14:45following the exile. Israel got its legs under itself
- 14:48again, but the people were always under the rule of one
- 14:52foreign king or another. It's only now with modern post
- 14:57Holocaust Israel that we are seeing the flourishing of the
- 15:01dry tree and it will be only after the Tribulation, when the
- 15:07Millennium has begun and Christ is ruling from His throne in
- 15:11Jerusalem, that quote, all the trees of the field shall know
- 15:16that I the Lord have done it. And that's the end of the
- 15:19explanation for chapter 17. So if you are not subscribed,
