- 0:00Welcome to Loud and Lifted, I'm your host Betsy
- 0:02Hamm and today's quick lift is a shot of bold
- 0:04truth and practical wisdom you can digest before
- 0:07your coffee gets cold. This week we're amplifying
- 0:10the wisdom of Julia Arpeg, founder of Align Recruitment
- 0:13and a powerhouse in values -based leadership.
- 0:16Julia didn't wait for permission, she made the
- 0:18brave choice not to take the job, to bet on herself
- 0:21and build a business that aligns with her purpose.
- 0:24Her journey is packed with courage, clarity,
- 0:27and conscientious decisions. and we're breaking
- 0:30it down into bite -sized takeaways with action
- 0:32items. Let's get lifted. Takeaway number one.
- 0:44Your mindset needs a daily tune -up. Julie is
- 0:47successful, but she isn't just stopping there
- 0:49or stopping where she's at. She continues to
- 0:52work on self -improvement daily. I thought it
- 0:54was so interesting when she talked about her
- 0:57affirmations. She listens to a 17 minute recording
- 1:00now at this point. It's her own words and her
- 1:03own voices daily. And she talked about mindset
- 1:05is something that is not done mindsets every
- 1:08day and you have to keep leveling up. I love
- 1:11this and I think this is something that most
- 1:12of us don't spend time thinking about and especially
- 1:15listening to positive affirmations. It's one
- 1:17of the takeaways. I know that I'm definitely
- 1:19going to try. And this isn't just about the positive
- 1:22affirmations. It's maybe taking a minute to meditate,
- 1:25maybe just sitting in silence, thinking about
- 1:28all the things that you have gratitude for. We
- 1:30often get caught up on what we need to improve
- 1:33or what we don't have or what we're missing out
- 1:34on. But we all have so much to be thankful and
- 1:38to have gratitude for. So maybe it's sitting
- 1:40in the morning and being thankful for what you
- 1:43already have or what you're already doing. Do
- 1:45leave me the comment. You cannot live a thoughtful
- 1:47life if you do not think. clarity and pause.
- 1:51Again, a theme that we've heard in other episodes,
- 1:54which means it's important when we have multiple
- 1:56women telling us the same thing. We need to take
- 1:58that clarity pause, we need to take a moment
- 2:00for ourselves, and we need to continue to work
- 2:03on mindsets. Maybe it's reading books. Confidence
- 2:05in abundance and focuses aren't just buzzwords,
- 2:08they're muscle. Julia uses affirmations and mental
- 2:12discipline to stay grounded and intentional.
- 2:14Action item here, create a morning or evening
- 2:17mindset ritual. Start with just five minutes.
- 2:20It can be so small. I know you can find five
- 2:22minutes in a day where you take the time to have
- 2:25reflection or affirmation or gratitude. Maybe
- 2:28you start journaling, but set your internal tone
- 2:31before the world sets it for you. Takeaway number
- 2:34two, design your life on purpose. Julia's schedule
- 2:38isn't about hustle. It's about alignment. She
- 2:41blocks time for what's important to her. For
- 2:43her, it's fate. It's family. It's fitness. And
- 2:46that's what she focuses on. I joked with her
- 2:49about, does she sleep? It seems like she gets
- 2:51so much accomplished in a day. And she does.
- 2:54She goes to bed probably earlier than most of
- 2:56us, which is amazing. And that just shows you
- 2:57how intentional she is and how disciplined she
- 3:00is. And she takes time for the things that are
- 3:02important in her life. Now, she was quick to
- 3:04say, it's not perfect. There's days where her
- 3:06schedule gets off track, and that's okay. That's
- 3:08life. That's normal. But she sets out with a
- 3:11very disciplined, intentional schedule. The other
- 3:13big takeaway with Julia and her intentional schedule
- 3:16is that she sets boundaries. Now, she works for
- 3:18herself. She has the ability to shut down work
- 3:21at 3 p .m. Not all of us have that opportunity,
- 3:23especially if you're in a corporate environment
- 3:25or small business owner. But I think it's important
- 3:27just the thought around that of having intentional
- 3:30schedule times. And when you do, stop checking
- 3:32your phone. I love the fact that she puts her
- 3:35phone in another room because we all know how
- 3:37much time we get distracted on our phone. And
- 3:40if you're sitting here thinking about that you
- 3:41don't have enough time in the day, I highly encourage
- 3:43you to go on your phone and on Apple, you can
- 3:46see how many times you've touched your phone
- 3:48throughout the day or how many minutes a day
- 3:50or hours a week are on your phone. So maybe one
- 3:53of your goals is to lessen that time that you're
- 3:55on your phone. And don't tell me you're on your
- 3:56phone for work. Even though I'm sure you are,
- 3:58you can see the breakdown by where you're spending
- 4:00time, whether it's an email or on social media.
- 4:04But the point is, let's limit our phone time.
- 4:07No one is good at multitasking and no one's good
- 4:10at always being on. You need that downtime and
- 4:13you need to be intentional about how you're scheduling
- 4:15it. Should be the comment that we're letting
- 4:17our phones run our lives and that's so true.
- 4:19So just try checking the list. The other comment
- 4:21that she made was a book she made a great recommendation
- 4:24for. It's called The Ruthless Elimination of
- 4:27Hurry. I haven't read it yet. I ordered it from
- 4:29Amazon, but I'm anxious to check that book out
- 4:32because I think that's something that we all
- 4:34can do a better job. The other part of being
- 4:37intentional with her schedule is, as Julia shared,
- 4:39she has her why. And she has a mission run company
- 4:43and that's an amazing thing that she was able
- 4:46to accomplish. But that helps her to fulfill
- 4:48those things that are very important to her.
- 4:51And that is serving others. She wants to make
- 4:53the world a better place. So for running a very
- 4:56successful company, having four kids living in
- 4:59very different worlds with having teenage boys
- 5:01and then her little ones, as she called them,
- 5:04she has a lot going on, but she still finds that
- 5:07time to give back what she finds very important.
- 5:10It's about how you act, not what you say and
- 5:13being true to your values. Action item, audit
- 5:16your week, maybe two weeks. Does your calendar
- 5:18reflect your values? Are you creating boundaries?
- 5:22Are you protecting what matters most, even from
- 5:24your own to -do list? And are you spending time
- 5:26on the things that are most important to you?
- 5:29Number three, ask for what you're worth. Julia
- 5:32is a recruiter in the tech industry, so she gets
- 5:35to see the employee side as well as the company
- 5:38side of dealing with negotiation. And her advice
- 5:42was for negotiating for a job, ask for top dollar,
- 5:45do your research, then ask for more. Do it respectfully
- 5:49and kindly. But I thought this was a great quote.
- 5:53Don't say their no for them. It's all in your
- 5:56approach. It's all in your research. And you
- 5:58just have to ask. And she made the point of maybe
- 6:01you ask for 10 % more and they come back and
- 6:03meet you at 5 % more. Well, that's 5 % more than
- 6:06you would have had if you didn't ask. It doesn't
- 6:08hurt. And as I mentioned on the episode, I realized
- 6:11I have not been a good negotiator in my past
- 6:14working for companies where a company would come
- 6:16back and say, hey, this is the amount. I'd be
- 6:19like, OK, sounds good. I didn't push for that
- 6:21offer because I didn't know. And maybe part of
- 6:24the reason why we don't do that is. or uncomfortable.
- 6:27Maybe it's we don't have the confidence, but
- 6:30at the end of the day, we have to have the confidence.
- 6:32We have to do the research. You have to be realistic.
- 6:35Being on the hiring side, I don't want people
- 6:38coming to me saying that they want some outrageous
- 6:40number. That's not their value of that role,
- 6:43but you have to be realistic, but you have to
- 6:45definitely make the ask. And this isn't just
- 6:48when you are applying for a new job or you're
- 6:51going to accept a new job. This is in performance
- 6:53review time or when they are giving those salary
- 6:55or increases. This also happens I think a lot
- 6:59of times where maybe throughout the year you
- 7:00start taking on more work and more responsibility
- 7:04and you're not compensated for that. So when
- 7:06that happens you have to put together the reason
- 7:09why you're asking for an increase because of
- 7:11the additional work or the additional effort
- 7:13you're putting in. Do your homework, look at
- 7:16where you're at, and have the confidence to make
- 7:19the ask. Another book recommendation she had
- 7:21here, which I also ordered, is called Never Split
- 7:24the Difference. It's all about negotiation. So
- 7:27I'm really looking forward to reading that book
- 7:29as well. Action item here, prep for your next
- 7:32big ask. Know your value, ask with confidence,
- 7:35and remember Julie's mantra, don't say their
- 7:38no for them. Here's a reminder that clarity comes
- 7:41from courage. Confidence grows through action,
- 7:44and alignment starts with asking better questions.
- 7:47Julia didn't wait for perfect timing. She created
- 7:49her own runway. So whether you're negotiating
- 7:51your work, building your schedule with intention,
- 7:54or making the brave leap into something new,
- 7:56know this. You're capable. You are worthy, and
- 7:59you don't need to wait to get aligned. Now, go
- 8:02build something that feels like you. Until next
- 8:04time, stay loud and lifted.
