- 0:01Speaker 1: In the spring of twenty nineteen, a group of twenty
- 0:04Speaker 1: somethings spent their weekends partying at a friend's house in
- 0:07Speaker 1: East Detroit. On one of these nights, in the early
- 0:10Speaker 1: morning hours, the unthinkable happened. Jokes and dancing turned to
- 0:15Speaker 1: terror when a man in a mask burst through the door,
- 0:18Speaker 1: armed with a gun and began firing. The attack left
- 0:25Speaker 1: three friends dead and the remaining two witnesses wounded. Those
- 0:30Speaker 1: that survived did not get a clear view of the shooter. Nonetheless,
- 0:35Speaker 1: they could point to one person who they believed could
- 0:38Speaker 1: have a twisted motive to murder them all, and they
- 0:43Speaker 1: had met him only hours before.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Hi.
- 0:51Speaker 1: There, I'm Kevin, and welcome to Just Thatt Lounge. Today's
- 0:55Speaker 1: case is about the dangerous decisions made by someone desperate
- 0:59Speaker 1: to keep their see secrets hidden. It's a disturbing story
- 1:02Speaker 1: of young life taken the result of one crazy night.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Let's take a look. On Friday May twenty fifth, twenty nineteen,
- 1:29Speaker 1: a group of friends in East Detroit were partying at
- 1:31Speaker 1: a friend's house. It had been a night filled with
- 1:34Speaker 1: noise in drama, drinks, dancing, hookups, and arguments. In the
- 1:40Speaker 1: early morning hours, just five of the partiers were left
- 1:43Speaker 1: in the house Blair Keys, Paris Cameron, Alante Davis, Armand
- 1:49Speaker 1: Matthews and Timothy Blancher. They were relaxed and winding down
- 1:54Speaker 1: amongst the mess of the construction taking place in the
- 1:57Speaker 1: house and the remnants from a night of partying k
- 2:00Speaker 1: The mood was laid back and they were joking about
- 2:03Speaker 1: the events of the night when they heard what they
- 2:06Speaker 1: assumed must be fireworks going off by the front door.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Through the door came a man wearing a mask, gun
- 2:12Speaker 1: in hand, firing at the group indiscriminately. The attack lasted
- 2:17Speaker 1: only moments. Blair Keys emerged from where he had fled
- 2:21Speaker 1: into the bathroom to find his friends, Paris Cameron and
- 2:25Speaker 1: the Lante Davis wounded in the living room.
- 2:33Speaker 3: What's the address, man, what's the straight day?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Two of my friends are wounded? Okay, here please please.
- 3:14Speaker 1: From the basement. Armand Matthews, himself shot in the chest,
- 3:17Speaker 1: did what he could to help another seriously wounded friend,
- 3:21Speaker 1: Timothy Blancher, from the other level of the house. He too,
- 3:25Speaker 1: placed a call to nine one one.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Okay.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Blair later recalled hearing over twenty shots while hiding in
- 3:56Speaker 1: the bathroom for those in his sight. The gunman had
- 3:59Speaker 1: been unforgive. Alante had been shot twice. Both Timothy and
- 4:04Speaker 1: Paris had been struck four times. When emergency responders arrived
- 4:10Speaker 1: on scene, they found Alante in the dining room already deceased. Similarly,
- 4:15Speaker 1: despite Armand's best efforts, it was too late to save Timothy.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Paris was rushed to the hospital for treatment. As an
- 4:23Speaker 1: organ donor. She was kept alive for a time, though
- 4:26Speaker 1: ultimately she too passed away from her injuries. Twenty year
- 4:36Speaker 1: old Paris Cameron came out as gay when he was
- 4:39Speaker 1: just thirteen years old. One year before the shooting, Paris
- 4:43Speaker 1: began to identify as a transgender woman. Her good friends
- 4:47Speaker 1: at the party that night were likewise out and proud.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Twenty year old Timothy Blancher, or Miami, as his friends
- 4:55Speaker 1: knew him, is remembered as a fun, loving and kind
- 4:58Speaker 1: young man. He was close with his family, particularly his
- 5:02Speaker 1: older brother Devil. Twenty one year old Alante Davis was
- 5:06Speaker 1: known as just Tay to his friends. His sister recalled
- 5:10Speaker 1: he was silly, he was full of life. He was helpful.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Armand Matthews recovered from the gunshot that he had sustained
- 5:19Speaker 1: to his chest. It had been a serious wound that
- 5:22Speaker 1: had nonetheless first escaped his notice while he desperately tried
- 5:26Speaker 1: to render aid to Timothy Blair, Keys was also fortunate
- 5:31Speaker 1: to escape the house that night alive. There were two
- 5:38Speaker 1: additional partygoers that had spent most of the night at
- 5:41Speaker 1: the house, though they left before the shooter arrived. The homeowner,
- 5:46Speaker 1: twenty nine year old Lance Atterbury and Brendan Suttle, who
- 5:49Speaker 1: had only recently met and began dating Armand. When the
- 5:53Speaker 1: shooting took place. These two were across the city at
- 5:56Speaker 1: Brendan's home, where they spoke with his mother and packed
- 5:59Speaker 1: a bag with d some belongings. From there, they drove
- 6:02Speaker 1: back to the house on Devonshire Road. When they arrived
- 6:06Speaker 1: at the house, they were met with caution tape, ambulances,
- 6:09Speaker 1: police cruisers, and horrific news. Neither Blair nor Armand was
- 6:17Speaker 1: able to formally identify the shooter. At the scene, a
- 6:21Speaker 1: ski mask had covered all but his eyes. Blair reported
- 6:25Speaker 1: his complexion was light and his eyes were brown. The
- 6:28Speaker 1: man in the mask had been visible for only a
- 6:31Speaker 1: moment before he began firing. Yet the surviving partygoers had
- 6:36Speaker 1: their suspicions. Earlier in the night, the group had made
- 6:39Speaker 1: a quick trip to the BP gas station on the
- 6:42Speaker 1: corner of Devonshire and mac While they were there, Paris
- 6:46Speaker 1: made a new friend. At two forty am, Paris and
- 6:52Speaker 1: Alante entered the shop. Paris was dressed in all black
- 6:56Speaker 1: with a Nike cap. Alante wore a camo style top
- 6:59Speaker 1: and a hat as well. Lining up for the cashier. Behind,
- 7:03Speaker 1: into the left was a young man who caught Paris's eye.
- 7:07Speaker 1: He had entered the store only a minute before, grabbed
- 7:10Speaker 1: a juice from the cooler, and stood in line. After
- 7:14Speaker 1: a moment or two of contemplation, Paris clearly made up
- 7:17Speaker 1: her mind, and she broke free from Alante to speak
- 7:20Speaker 1: with the young man at the doorway. Their interaction was
- 7:23Speaker 1: off camera. Moments later, the larger group entered. Blair led
- 7:30Speaker 1: the way around the corner to the coolers, followed by
- 7:32Speaker 1: a Lante. Timothy wore a pink tank top and was
- 7:36Speaker 1: followed by Paris. What is curious is that the mystery
- 7:39Speaker 1: man in the camouflage jacket and shorts first paid for
- 7:43Speaker 1: his drink and headed towards the door. There, he paused
- 7:47Speaker 1: to briefly chat with Paris. Then he began to leave
- 7:50Speaker 1: the station. Cameras outside showed that as he left, Paris
- 7:55Speaker 1: called out to him. There was no audio, but it
- 7:59Speaker 1: seems that this prime him to return to the store.
- 8:03Speaker 1: The group was captured inside the shop again. It was
- 8:08Speaker 1: unclear exactly what was said. Blair recalled only that Paris
- 8:12Speaker 1: was being overtly flirtatious. As the group exited, they got
- 8:16Speaker 1: into Blair's car, which had been parked around the side
- 8:19Speaker 1: of the shop, just out of view of the external camera.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Pulling out towards the road, Paris leaned out the window
- 8:25Speaker 1: and called after the young man once more. She gave
- 8:28Speaker 1: him the address of Lance's house on Devonshire Road. They
- 8:32Speaker 1: were having a party. He should come by, she said.
- 8:40Speaker 1: The young man that Paris invited to the house party
- 8:43Speaker 1: was eighteen year old Devin Robinson. He had attended one
- 8:46Speaker 1: of the same grade schools as Armand years before, and
- 8:50Speaker 1: he lived locally only two blocks over in fact on Buckingham.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Twenty to thirty minutes after their encounter at the gas station,
- 8:58Speaker 1: Devon arrived at the house. He had accepted Paris's invitation
- 9:03Speaker 1: to the party. Heavy levels of intoxication go some way
- 9:06Speaker 1: to explaining what happened next. When Devon first arrived, he
- 9:12Speaker 1: said little, but in a very short span of time
- 9:16Speaker 1: he found himself upstairs in the master bedroom with Paris
- 9:21Speaker 1: and then with others. The intimate activities taking place in
- 9:26Speaker 1: that bedroom were not a secret in the house. On
- 9:29Speaker 1: the contrary, as events transpired, there were jokes made openly
- 9:34Speaker 1: and loudly. They called Devon a trade, a man who
- 9:38Speaker 1: presented as straight but nonetheless liked other men. That Devon
- 9:43Speaker 1: was on the downlow might have sparked more concerned, but
- 9:48Speaker 1: in the haze of a house party at three am,
- 9:50Speaker 1: that danger just didn't register. The survivors of the house
- 9:57Speaker 1: party detailed to investigators what had tr transpired with Devon
- 10:01Speaker 1: in the house and the partners he had been intimate
- 10:04Speaker 1: with over that short period of time. The investigation then
- 10:08Speaker 1: sought to piece together the eighteen year old's movements after
- 10:11Speaker 1: first encountering the group at the gas station through to
- 10:15Speaker 1: the time of the shooting. They did so by linking
- 10:17Speaker 1: camera footage from across the neighborhood. After receiving his invite
- 10:22Speaker 1: to the house party, they tracked Devon walking back towards
- 10:25Speaker 1: his house on Buckingham. What they found was that on
- 10:28Speaker 1: his way he routinely paused, backtracked as though he wanted
- 10:33Speaker 1: to return to the group, then he would turn around
- 10:36Speaker 1: and carry on. Eventually he made his way over to Devonshire.
- 10:43Speaker 1: He was at the house on Devonshire for approximately an hour,
- 10:46Speaker 1: most of that time spent in the master bedroom. The
- 10:52Speaker 1: same external BP station cameras caught his trip home. After
- 10:56Speaker 1: his activities at the house party, he stopped at the
- 10:59Speaker 1: shop once more, but this time cameras captured him pacing
- 11:04Speaker 1: in front of the door, spitting onto the ground, leaning
- 11:07Speaker 1: over and gagging. Devon then entered the store and purchased
- 11:13Speaker 1: another drink. By four two a m. He had returned home.
- 11:17Speaker 1: The shooting took place less than an hour later. After
- 11:26Speaker 1: determining Devon Robinson's address, officers arrived at his home on
- 11:30Speaker 1: Buckingham to find that he and his mother, Mallory, had
- 11:33Speaker 1: inexplicably moved out of the house the day after the murders.
- 11:37Speaker 1: A roommate who remained there said only that they left
- 11:40Speaker 1: in a hurry. Police released images of Devon to the
- 11:44Speaker 1: media and asked for the public's help in locating him.
- 11:48Speaker 1: It took over a week, but an anonymous tip was
- 11:51Speaker 1: received that led Detroit PD to a house on the
- 11:54Speaker 1: other side of the city. They arrested Devon Robinson with
- 11:57Speaker 1: the intent to charge him recounts of intentional homicide. When
- 12:03Speaker 1: the eighteen year old sat down with detectives, they began
- 12:06Speaker 1: by laying all of their cards on the table. They
- 12:10Speaker 1: knew he was the shooter, They said, they knew what
- 12:13Speaker 1: had transpired earlier in the night that had caused him
- 12:17Speaker 1: to snap.
- 12:19Speaker 4: I don't want you to say anything right now when
- 12:21Speaker 4: we know that you're responsible to shooting.
- 12:23Speaker 2: They had to secure or not to rescue for the pounce.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Now we know some other things that have been privet.
- 12:33Speaker 4: We know some things that they did to you. There
- 12:35Speaker 4: was not cool pract today. We know that you were
- 12:39Speaker 4: in tax team prior today we know exactly what you did. Well,
- 12:48Speaker 4: we want to know why we did what you did.
- 12:50Speaker 2: What was your emotions?
- 12:51Speaker 4: Thing ur entire We know get what you need, but
- 12:57Speaker 4: we both made into we understand.
- 13:02Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Detectives told Devin that if he opened up, they could
- 13:07Speaker 1: be as advocate to the prosecutor's office. They lied further
- 13:11Speaker 1: when they told him that his DNA was found all
- 13:14Speaker 1: over the scene. At that time, Devin conceded that he
- 13:18Speaker 1: had spent time with Paris in the master bedroom, but
- 13:21Speaker 1: he refused to admit being with any of the other men. However,
- 13:25Speaker 1: the only DNA of his that investigators had managed to
- 13:28Speaker 1: retrieve was on Timothy, not Paris. Devon admitted to detectives
- 13:34Speaker 1: that he was a closeted gay man. He was on
- 13:37Speaker 1: the down low. He did not admit to murder.
- 13:45Speaker 6: Nowaday for you, So what's that being said? That's the
- 14:03Speaker 6: point of what we're talking about.
- 14:06Speaker 7: Now?
- 14:06Speaker 2: Were you threatening to be exposed? Dang ain't mad about it.
- 14:13Speaker 8: It's the thing that everybody.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Finding out you don't want you find out.
- 14:18Speaker 8: You don't talking about my family like my mama. You
- 14:21Speaker 8: don't know how to find up and all the people
- 14:23Speaker 8: that you don't want to find up because I haven't
- 14:27Speaker 8: told them, but I wanted to tell them.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Befo. You want to tell them what that you're done off?
- 14:36Speaker 2: But can't you want to tell them before this? Stroud?
- 14:42Speaker 4: Yeah, before my son told me.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I knew. I look at him. You know what I'm saying.
- 14:50Speaker 2: We don't like kids, mm hmm. You don't think you
- 14:53Speaker 2: have a tendencies that.
- 14:55Speaker 4: They don't know, but they see people your hanging around.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You don't think they're.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Gonna Devon was confronted with the video evidence and pressured further.
- 15:07Speaker 1: The same door bell camera that had captured him returning
- 15:09Speaker 1: home at a few minutes after four am also captured
- 15:12Speaker 1: a dark figure leaving his house. Just under an hour later,
- 15:16Speaker 1: at four fifty three, a camera across from the house
- 15:20Speaker 1: on Devonshire Road captured the front steps of the property. Unfortunately,
- 15:25Speaker 1: this camera was motion activated and sensitive to light, it
- 15:28Speaker 1: did not capture the shooter entering. It did, however, capture
- 15:33Speaker 1: the shooter in dark and blurry footage running from the
- 15:36Speaker 1: house following the attack. That was approximately four minutes after
- 15:41Speaker 1: someone had left Devon Robinson's home. Two blocks over, then
- 15:45Speaker 1: someone was captured returning to the house on Buckingham at
- 15:49Speaker 1: five one am, only a few minutes after the shooting.
- 15:53Speaker 1: The distance between the houses was only a quarter of
- 15:56Speaker 1: a mile. It could be walked in four to five minutes.
- 16:00Speaker 1: One running was likely to cover the distance in only three.
- 16:04Speaker 1: This meant that the footage of both houses aligned with
- 16:07Speaker 1: the same dark figure making the trip, committing the murders
- 16:11Speaker 1: and returning nearly down to the second.
- 16:15Speaker 5: And you are all ready.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Take a sound takes you all the whole time. Fact
- 16:25Speaker 2: and next one.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Because we had videos of people have to do right
- 16:35Speaker 6: back shortly afterwards and going back to that.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Okay, we had video over there because you just told
- 16:42Speaker 2: me you let by the eleven. That's not true. What
- 16:45Speaker 2: we had actual video. So the gallery line to which
- 16:49Speaker 2: was damn shot taking contract me, what do you you ideal?
- 16:56Speaker 2: Video was coming up and go back to the house.
- 17:00Speaker 2: So I everywhere, you know, we had times.
- 17:07Speaker 9: Everywhere, but.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Tracked tracks boom boom bomber. He's already together, right, no buship.
- 17:19Speaker 10: Neither he.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Nor I wasn't saying I just memory loss whatever the
- 17:26Speaker 2: case may be.
- 17:27Speaker 6: Telling you before we have they have we tracked.
- 17:31Speaker 11: I just tracked broom dog scouse.
- 17:34Speaker 2: We can do that, and we did that as well
- 17:39Speaker 2: in the house running That's okay.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Devin Robinson pleaded not guilty and awaited his day in court.
- 17:52Speaker 1: His family stood by him. Through multiple phone calls recorded
- 17:56Speaker 1: from the county jail, Devin analyzed the case against him.
- 18:00Speaker 1: He speculated that the state did not have the amount
- 18:03Speaker 1: of evidence that they claimed. Notably on these calls, he
- 18:07Speaker 1: never pleaded his innocence. He did not restate his alibi
- 18:10Speaker 1: that he was at home with his mother when the
- 18:12Speaker 1: shooting occurred. He never speculated as to who the figure
- 18:16Speaker 1: could have been, leaving his house right before the murders
- 18:19Speaker 1: and returning immediately after. His mother, Mallory, who was in
- 18:23Speaker 1: a romantic relationship with another woman, nonetheless expressed frustration over
- 18:28Speaker 1: media reports that her son was secretly gay.
- 18:34Speaker 5: And everybody making me mad. I'm saying, but you know,
- 18:38Speaker 5: I are trying to add any fish me off.
- 18:46Speaker 12: And don't let me. Don't let met me out of this.
- 18:49Speaker 12: They pick me all the way off.
- 18:52Speaker 5: And I trying to make it, say Craft, knowing you
- 18:58Speaker 5: to have a.
- 19:00Speaker 12: Say a girl loved nothing that they know me forever.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Yeah, if he know how I am. People who know
- 19:08Speaker 5: me know how I am.
- 19:10Speaker 2: She was like.
- 19:13Speaker 5: Something like that, if if we had the death pilot,
- 19:16Speaker 5: they would be trying to give you the death piloty,
- 19:18Speaker 5: but they can't ever think they could do. Was not
- 19:20Speaker 5: for life your mischi damn. So they basically trying to
- 19:26Speaker 5: use you because you hate Wyth but them I'm gonna
- 19:32Speaker 5: grady and you feel me.
- 19:36Speaker 12: Exactly.
- 19:38Speaker 1: There was also discussion of Devin's case in comparison to
- 19:41Speaker 1: his brothers, who played out on his charges due to
- 19:44Speaker 1: a co defendant that was threatening to testify against him.
- 19:49Speaker 12: If it ain't no evidence to charge me by my court,
- 19:52Speaker 12: they they.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Gotta let me go, not necessarily that they't do what
- 19:56Speaker 5: they want to mean, if they haven't again tell me
- 19:59Speaker 5: he's glean. I can ask you what you ain't got
- 20:01Speaker 5: to worry about to say?
- 20:02Speaker 12: You can tell I mean, that's what.
- 20:03Speaker 5: He was worried about to.
- 20:04Speaker 12: Right, all right? And I told himbout leave I was gay, Okay, Yeah,
- 20:17Speaker 12: so that hit me.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Out the window. That hate crime.
- 20:24Speaker 5: My thing is everything you ever heard anybody whoever felt
- 20:28Speaker 5: like that way or something? Do you ever ready to
- 20:31Speaker 5: come to meet with that sh donkeys that kind of
- 20:33Speaker 5: shay from me?
- 20:34Speaker 8: I'm not.
- 20:38Speaker 1: The trial took place in March twenty twenty.
- 20:41Speaker 13: It's a tax full of emotion, right o, CHP cameras.
- 20:47Speaker 13: We've got three dactoms, We've.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Got h Sax involved.
- 20:53Speaker 11: Just see is I'm sure not part of your everyday life?
- 21:00Speaker 2: All right?
- 21:01Speaker 13: So right now it's time to put both deep on
- 21:05Speaker 13: the ground, take a deep breath or hair. We're real
- 21:10Speaker 13: were relaxed. We're going to make them prove.
- 21:13Speaker 14: It's something that was known as a trade. A trade
- 21:17Speaker 14: is someone who holds themselves out as heterosexual but as
- 21:20Speaker 14: interest in people of the same sex. But they're on
- 21:22Speaker 14: the download, so they're referring to as the trade, and
- 21:25Speaker 14: then they're laughing, giggling and saying.
- 21:27Speaker 11: Oh, he is gay, he is gay.
- 21:29Speaker 9: Eventually, the defendant leaves and parents.
- 21:31Speaker 11: Are seeing him off out the front door.
- 21:33Speaker 14: Pairs are happy, but while he's watching their interaction and
- 21:36Speaker 14: the defendant is seeing, they're just completely blank.
- 21:39Speaker 11: And Blair's watching this happen.
- 21:41Speaker 14: He never thought it was a good idea for a
- 21:42Speaker 14: stranger home from the gas station in the first place,
- 21:45Speaker 14: and even complain about it to the homeowner.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Lands out of there.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Blair Keys told the jury about the house party, in
- 21:54Speaker 1: particular how Devin was behaving quiet, emotionless and cold, had
- 22:00Speaker 1: concerns that night about inviting him back to the house
- 22:03Speaker 1: in the first place.
- 22:05Speaker 15: That because I really like at that time, like I
- 22:07Speaker 15: was the type of person that's like that, I got
- 22:09Speaker 15: not doing it. If y'all want to bring a random
- 22:10Speaker 15: boy from a gas station, that's on y'all. But I
- 22:12Speaker 15: did tell him, like you know, I didn't like the
- 22:14Speaker 15: fact that they did that because it's a random boy
- 22:16Speaker 15: from a gas station. You know, why does concern it
- 22:19Speaker 15: concerned me because it's a random guy from a gas station.
- 22:24Speaker 9: Yeah, he was just chilling.
- 22:26Speaker 11: Does he say anything to these individuals?
- 22:29Speaker 9: No, the whole time he's not saying anything. He's just
- 22:33Speaker 9: sitting there, chilling the whole entire time. Not an emotion
- 22:37Speaker 9: in his face.
- 22:39Speaker 11: What is the interaction between Paris and the defendant for
- 22:42Speaker 11: forty weeks?
- 22:45Speaker 9: They just exchanged numbers? How does after that hug and
- 22:49Speaker 9: Divine walks the way that he came.
- 22:50Speaker 11: How does the look is talking now?
- 22:53Speaker 9: He has just a very bland look. He said, oh
- 22:56Speaker 9: y'all see you again. That's what he said when he left.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Blair then recounted the moment that the gunman burst in
- 23:03Speaker 1: through the front door and began firing.
- 23:07Speaker 9: Leave Paris, Alonte, Timothy.
- 23:11Speaker 11: In my mind, why a you're sitting around laughing about
- 23:15Speaker 11: the situation.
- 23:16Speaker 2: What happened?
- 23:17Speaker 15: Wear footsteps? We think it's lance. We are like, mind you,
- 23:21Speaker 15: it's like kind of close to July, so we are
- 23:24Speaker 15: like little firecracking noises. It wasn't a big gun, but
- 23:26Speaker 15: it was like so we think in his lance, plantage out.
- 23:29Speaker 15: But then we see a guy with a ski mask
- 23:31Speaker 15: come there. All I hear is Paris scream and gunshine?
- 23:35Speaker 10: What do you do?
- 23:37Speaker 9: I'll just sat there and waited for him to walk
- 23:39Speaker 9: out of the house. I was scared.
- 23:42Speaker 1: The defense's case relied on the inability of the two eyewitnesses,
- 23:46Speaker 1: Blair and Arman, to formally identify Devin as the shooter,
- 23:50Speaker 1: though in the time that had passed since the murders,
- 23:53Speaker 1: Blair had amended his statements. At trial, he told the
- 23:57Speaker 1: jury that he did in fact get a clear enough
- 24:00Speaker 1: look at the shooter to make an identification. He testified
- 24:04Speaker 1: that Devin Robinson was the killer.
- 24:08Speaker 11: Are you able to identify the person who's the shooter
- 24:10Speaker 11: that night?
- 24:12Speaker 2: Yes?
- 24:14Speaker 9: And how did that look like to you? It looks
- 24:17Speaker 9: the same.
- 24:20Speaker 11: Important to defendant, Sir Robinson. You didn't see the face
- 24:26Speaker 11: of the shooter, didn't but I got.
- 24:30Speaker 2: The face.
- 24:33Speaker 11: No, you really didn't look at who shooting? Yes, that's
- 24:40Speaker 11: the second shot.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Armand Matthews recounted how he grabbed Timothy and ran down
- 24:48Speaker 1: the stairs to the basement when the attacker began firing.
- 24:52Speaker 1: He did not see the shooter as the two attempted
- 24:54Speaker 1: to flee to safety. Down the stairs.
- 24:59Speaker 2: I and in the dind area. I really could not
- 25:03Speaker 2: see the front door. Blair's seeing everything.
- 25:06Speaker 11: When I seen gunshots, I immediately.
- 25:09Speaker 10: You know, first of all, are you know, we're like
- 25:11Speaker 10: we're out of the fireworks, but you know, we grabbed
- 25:14Speaker 10: my gratimity and.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I pushed onto the basement and I had a look
- 25:17Speaker 2: me over the running down the basement. You know, he
- 25:20Speaker 2: was saying something to me and be started talking and
- 25:22Speaker 2: grabbing my hand.
- 25:22Speaker 9: Put my hand with the chets and paying for the
- 25:26Speaker 9: record your hand.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Yes, And.
- 25:30Speaker 9: I had pressure.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I know. I ran back upstairs because I heard Claire's screaming.
- 25:35Speaker 11: I ran back upstairs to make sure everything right. I
- 25:38Speaker 11: see Teddy and Pears growing up in the corner.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I called not one one.
- 25:43Speaker 11: I stayed on the phone and I won't want ran
- 25:45Speaker 11: back down stairs. I had a pressure on Miami still.
- 25:47Speaker 2: He was still breathing.
- 25:50Speaker 10: He was looking on me and held pressure on and
- 25:53Speaker 10: I stayed on the phone till the cops got there.
- 25:54Speaker 10: When the Copscott there, she put them up to my
- 25:56Speaker 10: face and they take usure off fertility. And I believe
- 26:00Speaker 10: those he lost his time.
- 26:06Speaker 2: You didn't see the individual does not.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Devin Robinson's defense was weak. The cameras tracked the movements
- 26:17Speaker 1: of the shooter, which had aligned with someone coming and
- 26:20Speaker 1: going from his house. There was never an alternative theory
- 26:24Speaker 1: presented to account for these movements, either an explanation of
- 26:28Speaker 1: where Devin had been during that window of time, if
- 26:31Speaker 1: not the murder scene, or even a suggestion that the
- 26:34Speaker 1: figure in the camera was simply someone else. Devin did
- 26:40Speaker 1: not take the.
- 26:41Speaker 11: Stand want anyone to know about a sexual level.
- 26:45Speaker 14: He went on that night, and he knew that they
- 26:48Speaker 14: were all going to be talking.
- 26:49Speaker 11: It was all going to the neighborhood.
- 26:51Speaker 14: You aren't even armante you because he didn't feel like
- 26:54Speaker 14: he could be a game mail that I know you're
- 26:57Speaker 14: you're going to hear.
- 26:57Speaker 11: About how mom has a girlfriend and had the girlfriend.
- 27:00Speaker 14: To the reality is for this family, it is different
- 27:03Speaker 14: from them, and you hear that from the defendants.
- 27:05Speaker 11: Now it's the thing. Everybody who's going to know, everybody
- 27:09Speaker 11: who's gonna find out. How long I was gonna find out? Yeah,
- 27:13Speaker 11: I was gonna disown me.
- 27:15Speaker 14: And so he makes an even stupid decision to get
- 27:18Speaker 14: dressed with black bloating head down towards brunsred Over.
- 27:22Speaker 11: In Devonshire kill.
- 27:23Speaker 14: All these people come running back out towards Buckingham, back
- 27:27Speaker 14: in the house again.
- 27:29Speaker 11: You would have to believe after all of this at
- 27:31Speaker 11: some random.
- 27:32Speaker 14: Person went for an eight minute walk at the exact
- 27:34Speaker 14: time of the shooting.
- 27:35Speaker 5: That's not what happened.
- 27:37Speaker 11: This is a defendant, the defendant of this.
- 27:44Speaker 8: He didn't threaten anybody, didn't swear anybody.
- 27:51Speaker 16: Him shape shay I did. He was a Willie participant.
- 28:05Speaker 16: He has got absolute no.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Reason in the world.
- 28:13Speaker 11: To go and shoots.
- 28:18Speaker 1: The jury returned with their verdicts across all counts.
- 28:23Speaker 17: Devin Robinson as to count one homicide murdered, first degree premeditated, Alonte.
- 28:30Speaker 11: Davis, do you find the defendant guilty?
- 28:35Speaker 17: How do you find a defendant as the count too homicide,
- 28:38Speaker 17: first degree premeditated, Timothy Blanchard guilty? As the count three
- 28:44Speaker 17: homicide first degree premeditated, Pairs Cameron guilty.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Devin Robinson was sentenced to three life terms without the
- 28:58Speaker 1: possibility of parole for first degree, ten to twenty years
- 29:02Speaker 1: for two counts of assault with intent to murder, and
- 29:05Speaker 1: two years consecutively for felonies with a firearm ten counts
- 29:09Speaker 1: in total. Devon appealed his conviction on the grounds that
- 29:13Speaker 1: there had been insufficient evidence to identify him as the shooter.
- 29:18Speaker 1: That appeal was not successful. In April twenty twenty five,
- 29:24Speaker 1: the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life sentences for
- 29:28Speaker 1: individuals under the age of twenty one are a harsh
- 29:31Speaker 1: and disproportionate punishment. Young convicts such as Devon were able
- 29:35Speaker 1: to retroactively seek resentencing At the time of publication. Devon's
- 29:40Speaker 1: record shows that he is serving his time at the
- 29:43Speaker 1: Chippewa Correctional Facility in Michigan. His earliest release date is
- 29:47Speaker 1: listed as June second, two thousand fifty six. Family and
- 29:53Speaker 1: friends of Paris Cameron, Alonte Davis, and Timothy Blancher continue
- 29:58Speaker 1: to honor and cell rate their memory. The friends are
- 30:02Speaker 1: remembered for their silly and fun loving personalities, young lives
- 30:06Speaker 1: cut short over late night transgressions and the toxic shame
- 30:11Speaker 1: of a violent stranger. And that was the tragic case
- 30:19Speaker 1: of Paris Cameron, Timothy Blancher, Alante Davis, and the house
- 30:24Speaker 1: party massacre. Thank you for joining me, and a special
- 30:27Speaker 1: thanks this week to buddhicom Mom for joining our member's lounge.
