- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even
- 0:12in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover
- 0:19a beautiful story of grace, redemption, and hope.
- 0:23Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel According
- 0:27to Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:37Wedding days are wonderful days.
- 0:41They are celebrations. I must say to you,
- 0:44they have a very different perspective depending on whether
- 0:47you are a guest at the wedding or a participant,
- 0:50because if it's family, it's just
- 0:53different. I remember when Tammy and I were married, we were
- 0:58married on a Friday the 13th. That was a very lucky day
- 1:02for me, a day of great blessing. But now,
- 1:05as a father, we have given away both of our daughters
- 1:09in marriage to 2 fine young men, and we're grateful
- 1:13to God for them. But speaking as a father, the wedding is different
- 1:18when you're the one paying for it. And so we have a son now And
- 1:22I, I am rejoicing that somebody else is going
- 1:25to help pay for that wedding. But weddings are costly things,
- 1:29and yet the most valuable thing at the wedding is not the flowers,
- 1:34it is not the venue, it is not the food, it's not
- 1:38the dress. The most valuable thing at any wedding is the love. It is
- 1:41the love between a man and a woman and the union of
- 1:45those 2 hearts before a holy God. And for
- 1:49the record, there is nothing quite like a Christian wedding because this
- 1:53is not just the union of, of body and soul, it is also the union
- 1:57of spirit. 2 who are given to God are now given to
- 2:01one another. And we get a picture of that in Ruth chapter 4
- 2:05as Boaz and Ruth come together. It truly is one
- 2:09of the great romance stories of the Bible, and they become one
- 2:12of the great couples of scripture. And I'll remind you From the
- 2:16very beginning, I said to you this is the Gospel according to Ruth because it
- 2:20is a picture of the loving union of
- 2:24a worthy man and an unworthy Moabitess
- 2:28woman, a woman that really had no place in Israel, no place certainly
- 2:32in the line of Messiah. And yet through Boaz,
- 2:35through his love, through his sacrifice, through his grace,
- 2:39she comes into this relationship and into this family.
- 2:43I, I think it is just a remarkable reminder of
- 2:47the work that the Lord Jesus Christ, our heavenly bridegroom,
- 2:51has done to bring us into God's family. Remember in Ephesians
- 2:55chapter 5, marriage is a picture of the union between
- 2:59Christ and his church? Well, you're going to see that dramatically
- 3:03portrayed today in the union of Boaz and Ruth in Ruth
- 3:06chapter 4. The Bible says in Ruth chapter number 4 and
- 3:10verse number 8 that the kinsman,
- 3:14uh, which was the near kinsman to Ruth, has now decided he
- 3:18cannot redeem all that belongs to Ruth and to her family, all of that
- 3:23inheritance, lest he mar his own inheritance. So he says to Boaz,
- 3:26you redeem her. In other words, I cannot,
- 3:30so you bring her into your family.
- 3:33Verse number 8, therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz,
- 3:38buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.
- 3:41Now this is a— this is an unusual, uh,
- 3:46symbolic thing in ancient Israel. This goes all the way back to
- 3:49the book of Deuteronomy, all the way back to the Law of Moses.
- 3:53In fact, in the previous verse, verse number 7, the Bible says,
- 3:56now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning
- 3:59redeeming and concerning changing. For to confirm all
- 4:03things, a man plucked off his shoe and gave it to his neighbor, and this
- 4:06was a testimony in Israel. So in that day,
- 4:11if a man would not redeem, uh, the,
- 4:14the inheritance, it was really a disgrace. It was a dishonor.
- 4:18In fact, there were 2 parts to this custom. One was that he
- 4:22had to draw off his shoe, and the other was that the woman would spit
- 4:26in his face. Now, in this particular instance, there's no record of Ruth spitting
- 4:29in his face because it was done in an honorable way. He was
- 4:33not rejecting her. He was saying, I don't have the
- 4:37capacity, the power to redeem all that belongs to her.
- 4:41Boaz, you have that. You do that. And of course,
- 4:46we know by now that's exactly what Boaz wanted to hear. Yes,
- 4:49yes, that's what we want. We want Ruth to become Boaz's
- 4:53wife and Ruth to come into this line and into this
- 4:57family. So they're going through the custom. Remember, they're sitting in the court
- 5:01at the gate of the city. He takes off his shoe. Verse number 9,
- 5:04Boaz said unto the elders and to all the people, Ye are witnesses this day
- 5:09that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, all that was Chilion's
- 5:13and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess,
- 5:16the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise
- 5:20up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of
- 5:24the dead be not cut off from among his brethren and from the gate of
- 5:27his place. Ye are witnesses this day. And all the people that
- 5:30were in the gate and the elders said, we are witnesses. The Lord make
- 5:34the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah,
- 5:38which two did build the house of Israel. And do thou worthily
- 5:41in Ephratah and be famous in Bethlehem.
- 5:45And let thy house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah,
- 5:49of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman. So Boaz
- 5:52took Ruth and she was his wife. And when he went in unto her,
- 5:56the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son. It's beautiful,
- 6:00isn't it? May I just pause and say he did it the right way.
- 6:05He did it God's way. Now, uh, the— their ancient custom,
- 6:08their culture, very different from ours. For example, if somebody at
- 6:12a wedding today took off a shoe or threw a shoe, we would think this
- 6:16is not a good thing. But in this instance, uh, the, the transaction
- 6:20that was taking place was very much understood by everyone there.
- 6:24And it's wonderful when there is a wedding that
- 6:28is done God's way, in a way that honors the Lord,
- 6:31honors the woman, honors the man. This is
- 6:35God's way. Sin brings dishonor, but righteousness
- 6:39always brings honor. Now let's return to our understanding
- 6:43of this being a picture of the, the romance and redemption
- 6:47of Christ, the love and sacrifice of the
- 6:51Lord Jesus. There are some common denominators even to weddings today.
- 6:55For example, first of all, notice the price of
- 6:58the wedding. Boaz said, I bought it all, I paid for
- 7:02all of it. You don't go halfway in, friends, you go all the
- 7:06way in. When you buy the ring, you pay for it. When you buy the
- 7:09dress, you pay for it. When you When you plan the wedding,
- 7:12you pay for it. There is a price to be paid. And for the record,
- 7:17the wedding is only part of it. Far too many couples today want
- 7:21a great wedding day, but they think more about the wedding than they do the
- 7:23marriage. Friend, I want you to know that the, the price of having a great
- 7:27marriage is much more costly than the cost of a ceremony.
- 7:31And so Boaz understands that. He's making a commitment.
- 7:34It is a loving commitment to say, I have bought it all.
- 7:38I'm willing to pay the price. Can I tell you what the Lord Jesus Christ
- 7:42did for us? In the words of the hymn writer, Jesus paid it all,
- 7:46all to him I owe. In fact, on the cross when he
- 7:49cried, it is finished, he used a merchant term, tetelestai,
- 7:53which means paid in full. He paid the sin debt,
- 7:57friends. He paid it in full to bring you into God's family.
- 8:00And so number one, there is the price of the wedding. Secondly, there's the proclamation
- 8:04of the wedding. Because he's very concerned that all the witnesses observe
- 8:09it and testify to it. Even today we have witnesses at a wedding.
- 8:12That's why I think it's beautiful to see a, a church wedding, a Christian
- 8:16wedding, whatever the venue itself happens to
- 8:19be, that it be done in the presence of witnesses is, is important.
- 8:24Because what kind of love wants to be hidden? No,
- 8:27true sacrificial love wants everybody to know. That's why you send out
- 8:32the invitations. That's why you make the announcement. That's why you wear the ring.
- 8:35You, you do it publicly. And so the proclamation is,
- 8:39praise God, we have come into God's family through the
- 8:43redemptive work of Jesus. And then finally, there is the prayer at
- 8:47the wedding. The most holy thing at the wedding is when we
- 8:51make our dedication prayer to God, when the couple dedicates themselves
- 8:56in prayer to the Lord. And in verse 11 and 12, there's a
- 8:59prayer. We'll pick up with this prayer in our next study. But it sanctifies
- 9:03the whole union because it's more than Boaz and Ruth. It is the
- 9:07work of the Lord. Can I just tell you, salvation is
- 9:10of the Lord. Christ has paid it in full. Be unashamed
- 9:15to proclaim that you're a follower of the Lord Jesus and make this your
- 9:18prayer: Lord, let us be fruitful and bring you great glory as
- 9:22a result of the work of salvation you've done in our hearts.
