Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Understanding the Stage of Striving and the Role of Instincts in Response to External Events
Transcript
- 0:01Beyond the stage of flight or fight, we see in panic and the
- 0:05eventual recoil into inertia where we see the initial
- 0:09reactions of instinct at play. The stage of striving begins to
- 0:14harness energy of response by the vital being, albeit still
- 0:19very much under the influence and control of the power of
- 0:23instinctive behaviour. Striving, however, implies
- 0:27marshaling of the vital forces to try to address and overcome
- 0:32the perceived threat or obstacle in the way of the being's desire
- 0:36and thus goes beyond pure instinct to a type of vital
- 0:40focus or attention characterized by the guna of rajas.
- 0:47Dr. Dalal writes quote in this stage striving.
- 0:52An individual still living primarily in the vital
- 0:55consciousness struggles against difficulties with the reactions
- 0:59of the vital consciousness, namely instincts and impulses.
- 1:04But instinctive reactions which serve the animal marvelously
- 1:09well in its struggle for existence are inadequate guides
- 1:13for a human being, because in the 1st place, instincts in man
- 1:18are far inferior to those in the animal.
- 1:21And secondly, because the problems which a human being has
- 1:24to tackle are far more complex than those faced by an animal
- 1:30calling for an intelligence which can see beyond a limited
- 1:33sphere where instincts are proverbially regarded as blind.
- 1:39Moreover, instincts in themselves pose a problem to the
- 1:42human being because of the perpetual conflict between one
- 1:46instinct and another, and between instinct and reason.
- 1:52Thus, besides being inadequate for helping man and mastering
- 1:56the problems of life, instincts create an additional problem for
- 2:01the human being. The problem of self mastery,
- 2:05feelings and emotions which, like instincts also pertain to
- 2:10the vital consciousness, are indeed much more highly
- 2:14developed in the human being than even in the highest species
- 2:18of animal, but they have the same essential drawbacks as
- 2:22instincts. They operate within too narrow a
- 2:25sphere, primarily that of interpersonal relations, and
- 2:30like instincts they are fraught with conflict in the stage of
- 2:36striving during which human beings try to come to grips with
- 2:39the problems of life mastery and self mastery while still living
- 2:44predominantly in the vital consciousness.
- 2:47Life is more or less a blind struggle, a groping towards I'll
- 2:52perceived and ever eluding goals.
- 2:56The course of life is determined mostly by forces other than
- 3:00one's conscious choices and deliberate decisions.
- 3:04Therefore, 1's internal state is characterized by feelings of
- 3:08uncertainty, insecurity, conflict, anxiety and tension.
