- 0:11Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:14Great to have your company. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:17and drawing me into your day so that together you and I can open
- 0:22up this mighty mighty book of ours and hear the God of the
- 0:27universe speak to us. Just wows us.
- 0:31How good is that? Well, it's the middle of the
- 0:33week. It is a Wednesday, and while we
- 0:36might be in the middle of the goings of the week, this is all
- 0:41about the end. This is God wrapping up his
- 0:45plans in a big red shiny bow, getting the scissors and
- 0:50twirling the ribbons on the other end.
- 0:52God is going to, in this chapter, tell us that in the
- 0:56end, he will defeat his enemies and he will forgive his people
- 1:00and all will be right. It's it's the broad, sweeping
- 1:06statements of a God who wants to bring comfort and hope to his
- 1:10people as they are busy doing that work of restoring and
- 1:15rebuilding their homeland. So it's good for them to know
- 1:19that actually this is God's work and this is going to be the
- 1:23place where God can finally bless his people.
- 1:26And of course for us, we know that this is our future, where
- 1:31God destroys and defeats all that is evil and restores us to
- 1:36Him in His beautiful city. So let us read together Isaiah
- 1:42chapter 63. Who is this?
- 1:56Who comes from Edom? From the city of Basra, with his
- 2:00clothing stained red? Who is this in royal robes,
- 2:04marching in his great strength? It is I, the Lord announcing
- 2:09your salvation. It is I, the Lord who has the
- 2:13power to save. Why are your clothes so red, as
- 2:17if you have been treading out grapes?
- 2:20I have been treading the winepress alone.
- 2:23No one was here to help me. In my anger I have trampled my
- 2:27enemies as if they were grapes. In my fury I have trampled my
- 2:32foes, their blood stains my clothes.
- 2:36For the time has come for me to avenge my people, to ransom them
- 2:41from their oppressors. I was amazed to see that no one
- 2:45intervened to help the oppressed.
- 2:47So I myself stepped in to save them with my strong arm and my
- 2:52wrath sustained me. I crushed the nations in my
- 2:56anger and made them stagger and fall to the ground, spilling
- 3:00their blood upon the earth. I will tell of the Lord's
- 3:05unfailing love. I will praise the Lord for all
- 3:09He has done. I will rejoice in His great
- 3:13goodness to Israel, which he has granted according to His mercy
- 3:18and love, he said. They are my very own people.
- 3:23Surely they will not betray me again.
- 3:27And He became their Saviour. In all their suffering He also
- 3:31suffered, and He personally rescued them.
- 3:35In His love and mercy He redeemed them.
- 3:39He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.
- 3:43But they rebelled against Him and grieved His Holy Spirit.
- 3:47So He became their enemy and fought against them.
- 3:51Then they remembered those days of old when Moses led his people
- 3:56out of Egypt. They cried out.
- 3:59Where is the one who brought Israel through the sea, with
- 4:01Moses as their shepherd? Where is the one who sent his
- 4:05Holy Spirit to be among his people?
- 4:07Where is the one whose power was displayed when Moses lifted up
- 4:11his hand? The one who divided the sea
- 4:14before them, making himself famous forever?
- 4:18Where is the one who led them through the bottom of the sea?
- 4:22They were like fine stallions, racing through the desert, never
- 4:25stumbling as with cattle going down into a peaceful valley.
- 4:30The spirit of the Lord gave them rest.
- 4:34You led your people, Lord, and gained A magnificent reputation.
- 4:41Lord, look down from heaven. Look from your holy, glorious
- 4:45home and see us. Where is the passion and the
- 4:50might you used to show on our behalf?
- 4:53Where are your mercy and compassion now?
- 4:56Surely you are still our father. Even if Abraham and Jacob would
- 5:01disown us, Lord, you would still be our father.
- 5:06You are our Redeemer from ages past.
- 5:10Lord, why have you allowed us to turn from your path?
- 5:14Why have you given a stubborn heart?
- 5:16So we no longer fear you. Return and help us.
- 5:21For we are your servants, the tribes that are your special
- 5:26possession. How briefly your holy people
- 5:30possessed your holy place, and now our enemies have destroyed
- 5:34it. Sometimes it seems as though we
- 5:37never belong to you, as though we had never been known as your
- 5:42people, My Lord. We hear the cries of the people
- 5:55of Israel in despair as they return to their desolated land,
- 6:01and there's so much work to be done, and they wonder, they
- 6:05wonder whether they were ever your people.
- 6:09But Gee can feel like that for us too, can feel like we are in
- 6:14a desolate place sometimes. And when we just make a mess of
- 6:20our life, we make terrible decisions and we can be filled
- 6:25with shame and regret. But we see here that even when
- 6:30everyone else ought to disown us, our very own fathers, you
- 6:36don't. You remain faithful.
- 6:40You remain our loving, saving God.
- 6:45And so right now, I just thank you, our wonderful, generous,
- 6:50saving God, that you continually love us no matter what the
- 6:55season, no matter what happens, no matter what we do or fail to
- 6:59do. You love us, and you hold us as
- 7:05your prize and your possession. And so we feel your embrace.
- 7:11We feel your loving arms holding us close, and we thank you.
- 7:18And it's all in the name of Jesus that we can pray these
- 7:22things. Amen.
