Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garren.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Well, it's the final day in March, and a little
- 0:10Speaker 2: man this has been happening over the weekend. We've got
- 0:13Speaker 2: a final four set, but luter Manello, we're gonna get
- 0:16Speaker 2: your take on all that. I want to alert you though.
- 0:18Speaker 2: You know, we got to interview next month Jim Abbott
- 0:21Speaker 2: because lim loss Awareness month next month, so we got
- 0:23Speaker 2: to find a way to get him on.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Hey, outstanding pitcher picture no hre there was I able
- 0:32Speaker 1: to overcome his handicap to have a real good major
- 0:34Speaker 1: league career and he would be an interesting interview. And Alex,
- 0:38Speaker 1: good morning, good afternoon, after noon, goodnight, as they and
- 0:43Speaker 1: thanks for having me back as you always do. I
- 0:44Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So yeah, he just found this thing from Naked Prosthetics
- 0:48Speaker 2: about limb loss awareness. Turns out the Chiefs have an
- 0:52Speaker 2: above albue amputee assistant coach Porter Elliott. Did you know that?
- 0:57Speaker 2: I did not, So we'll be highlight a lot of
- 1:00Speaker 2: that in the next month. And as you know, one
- 1:02Speaker 2: leg up for a reason and I'm not an amputee.
- 1:05Speaker 2: That's the most interesting part of it all. But the
- 1:07Speaker 2: name just fits. So there you go. All right, let's
- 1:10Speaker 2: talk about this weekend. And firstly, I gotta give a
- 1:12Speaker 2: shout out to a kid I met at the Intercollegiate
- 1:15Speaker 2: Broadcasting System conference from Houston. Yes, the University of Houston
- 1:19Speaker 2: KOOG radio is what they call it, Jacobsen because his
- 1:24Speaker 2: school for the first time nineteen eighty four are going
- 1:27Speaker 2: to the final four. And lou you saw Jim Nance
- 1:30Speaker 2: get in the picture there, but that was pretty cool
- 1:32Speaker 2: because he's alumnus of University Houston.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Well, he's an alumnacy University of Houston. He's credited with
- 1:40Speaker 1: a five slam a jama of giving the Houston team
- 1:45Speaker 1: in the eighties. They went back to back to the
- 1:47Speaker 1: final four in eighty three and eighty four. He didn't
- 1:49Speaker 1: get him win it, but he's created with that. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: think Freddy Couples was his college roommate.
- 1:56Speaker 2: The golfer, if I'm not mistaken, right, Yes.
- 1:59Speaker 1: The golfer. Freddy Couples was a college room I'm almost
- 2:02Speaker 1: sure of that. Nance is a great broadcaster, obviously no
- 2:08Speaker 1: longer doing the tournament.
- 2:10Speaker 2: And correct me in the rule. He's gonna get the
- 2:12Speaker 2: call as Alma Modern next week, right, excuse me, He's
- 2:17Speaker 2: gonna get the call as all monitored. He didn't retire
- 2:19Speaker 2: from the March Madness? Did he already? I don't remember?
- 2:22Speaker 1: Oh yes, no he did, Oh yeah, no he did,
- 2:24Speaker 1: he did. I mean, this is Ian's gonna do it.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Iron Eagle's gonna do it. This is his second year
- 2:28Speaker 1: that Ian's going to do it. And I don't know
- 2:30Speaker 1: if you saw. Jim Nance is going to continue to
- 2:34Speaker 1: do the Masters through twenty thirty six, which is the
- 2:38Speaker 1: one hundredth anniversary of the Masters, and then Jim Nance
- 2:41Speaker 1: will retire. He probably will be probably in his mid
- 2:43Speaker 1: seventies by then. So great broadcaster, a Jersey Shore guy. Yeah,
- 2:50Speaker 1: Jersey Shore.
- 2:51Speaker 2: So kudos to him for being on the mic for
- 2:54Speaker 2: all those years and to get to see his Houston
- 2:57Speaker 2: team is pretty special. And then so you got that.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And by the way, seventy five percent of my picks
- 3:02Speaker 2: we talked about the very first week of after selection Sunday.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm still proud of seventy five percent. Maybe by one
- 3:09Speaker 2: with Florida, i'd being one hundred percent. But maybe I
- 3:12Speaker 2: did go with my heart with Saint John's a little
- 3:13Speaker 2: bit there. What do you think you.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Probably did go with your heart because I don't think
- 3:17Speaker 1: Saint John's could have beaten Florida. But let me say
- 3:19Speaker 1: one thing about Florida. They haven't played They've gone to
- 3:22Speaker 1: the Final four, they haven't played their A game yet,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and Walter Clayton Junior has come up with some clutch
- 3:30Speaker 1: shots for them. And the ironic thing is Walter cla
- 3:34Speaker 1: Clayton Junior came from my owner. He was for my
- 3:38Speaker 1: owner in the portal. So you're not gonna see players
- 3:42Speaker 1: sticking with iona or those type teams as we move forward.
- 3:46Speaker 1: That's why I think we have all number ones for
- 3:49Speaker 1: the first time since two thousand and eight. I think
- 3:53Speaker 1: you're gonna see all a lot of highest number one
- 3:57Speaker 1: and number two seeds moving forward. We're not gonna see
- 4:00Speaker 1: like North Carolina stay in eleventh seed very often anymore
- 4:03Speaker 1: like last year. But the four teams that are here,
- 4:06Speaker 1: they're all all can win it.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Well, wait, man, you say, why is that because of
- 4:09Speaker 2: the money factor?
- 4:10Speaker 1: The course of the money because of because of the
- 4:13Speaker 1: money factor. I mean, guys were in the portal before
- 4:15Speaker 1: their team was not out of the tournament.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I know that's crazy, even some coaches were, but that's
- 4:21Speaker 2: a different.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah, And the same thing with the coaches you're one
- 4:24Speaker 1: hundred percent correct. Alets that that is just as bad.
- 4:27Speaker 2: But I'll tell you this, We'll get to the rest
- 4:30Speaker 2: of the bracket because yesterday Johnny Broome Auburn. We talked
- 4:34Speaker 2: about this a little bit off air last week. Some
- 4:37Speaker 2: of these kids, you don't know their names until the
- 4:39Speaker 2: big stage, Am I right?
- 4:40Speaker 1: You're one hundred percent right. It's because college basketball, and
- 4:44Speaker 1: this is before even before the portal and the nil
- 4:47Speaker 1: money had become very transient one year and you can't yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 1: you can't draw a connection with the guy. That's why
- 4:57Speaker 1: coaches are dominant figures in college basketball, not the players.
- 5:04Speaker 1: The coaches are because the coaches are more steady, uh
- 5:09Speaker 1: in there in staying at these at these colleges. But
- 5:13Speaker 1: you're right with the players, I don't care who they are. Now,
- 5:16Speaker 1: watching them in the tournament might be the first time
- 5:18Speaker 1: we've seen some of these guys without a question. And
- 5:23Speaker 1: there's a lot of good talent out there. We just
- 5:26Speaker 1: we just don't know them like we used to and
- 5:28Speaker 1: used that that connection that you had between Saint Georgetown
- 5:32Speaker 1: where Patrick viewing in that great Georgetounty he played four years.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah I know, he only won one championship, but they
- 5:39Speaker 1: got to the final four three out of those four years.
- 5:42Speaker 1: He had a connection Louisville in the eighties and obviously
- 5:46Speaker 1: when I was growing up in the sixties and seventies,
- 5:50Speaker 1: U c l A. Yeah, it doesn't happen anymore, doesn't happen.
- 5:54Speaker 1: It's sick.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Well, you know the portallet's change everything, right. So even
- 5:57Speaker 2: in we often wonder with pro program can they spend
- 6:00Speaker 2: the whole career with their team? Now we literally have
- 6:03Speaker 2: to ask ourselves can the guy spend the whole career
- 6:06Speaker 2: in the college level? And now we're seeing we're seeing
- 6:10Speaker 2: after the big run by Saint John's and I mean
- 6:12Speaker 2: the regular season, the Big East getting the tournament win
- 6:15Speaker 2: the first time that maybe that five minutes against Arkansas
- 6:20Speaker 2: led to the biggest decision for Saint John's has to
- 6:23Speaker 2: deal with now, which is R J. Lewis entering the portal?
- 6:26Speaker 2: I mean, is he that salty? Can I can I
- 6:29Speaker 2: use a little mono day lingo? Is he salty about
- 6:31Speaker 2: this or what.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He could be? Now? He said? Somebody close to him
- 6:35Speaker 1: said no, so that he has great regard for Rick Patino.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I don't know that NBA scouts say he won't be
- 6:44Speaker 1: a first round pick. I was a little surprised by that.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I thought maybe at the lower end of the first
- 6:50Speaker 1: round or the second obviously maybe a second round. But
- 6:54Speaker 1: if he goes to all the school, this is gonna
- 6:56Speaker 1: be his third school, just like Kadari, Richmond, Sirrahcuse, Ston,
- 7:00Speaker 1: Saint John's, Louis Junior, UMass Saint John's, and question Mark
- 7:07Speaker 1: if you go somewhere else. Even Johnny Broom, he's one
- 7:14Speaker 1: of the probably the second best player in the country
- 7:17Speaker 1: or third, second or third whatever, behind Cooper fled who's
- 7:20Speaker 1: definitely the best and h but he came from Murray State,
- 7:24Speaker 1: Mary State, which has made runs in the tournament. They've
- 7:27Speaker 1: won a couple of games. You can't lose a guy
- 7:31Speaker 1: like Johnny Broom. You can't. And that's why I don't
- 7:36Speaker 1: think we'll ever see those teams again unless there's changes.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And what can the NCAA do, Because I mean a
- 7:43Speaker 2: lot of people actually find it outrageous that all number
- 7:45Speaker 2: ones made. It is the world we're in. It's like
- 7:48Speaker 2: number one is making its controversial? Now can you believe that?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Well it's controversial because let's face it was for these
- 7:55Speaker 1: first two weeks of the tournament a little bit of
- 7:56Speaker 1: a snooze fest. Was there really any compelling games and situations? Yeah,
- 8:03Speaker 1: there were some close games Arkansas and Texas Tech. You know,
- 8:08Speaker 1: we could pick out some close games, but there was
- 8:12Speaker 1: nothing that was super compelling. There just wasn't. Now again,
- 8:16Speaker 1: this could just be this year that all these one
- 8:19Speaker 1: seeds make. It doesn't mean it's going to happen down
- 8:22Speaker 1: the road. I think it's probably gonna be close to
- 8:24Speaker 1: the one and two seeds every year moving forward, unless
- 8:29Speaker 1: there's changes in the NCAA. And we don't know that
- 8:32Speaker 1: it is the SEC and the Big Ten going to
- 8:36Speaker 1: split from the NCAA. Where does that leave some some
- 8:40Speaker 1: of the other conferences. We really are in uncharted territory
- 8:45Speaker 1: moving forward, and I don't know if it's going to
- 8:48Speaker 1: be great. I really don't.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Well, we'll have to find out one last thing on
- 8:51Speaker 2: the Johnnies and we can get to them the whole
- 8:54Speaker 2: episode here, because I was I think we all fell
- 8:58Speaker 2: in love as a city with this team's run. I mean,
- 9:00Speaker 2: they win the first tournament game in twenty five years. Patino.
- 9:04Speaker 2: You could say it was out coached by by cal Perry,
- 9:08Speaker 2: but I just don't know why they weren't making their shots.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I mean, you're under the hoop at sixty two to
- 9:12Speaker 2: sixty and you miss it. Patino's not making that shot.
- 9:14Speaker 2: What happened? Was it evens that good? Or would Saint
- 9:17Speaker 2: John's nervous? What do you think?
- 9:19Speaker 1: Well, anything can happen, as I always beat a dead horse,
- 9:22Speaker 1: can happen in one game. I think that they could
- 9:26Speaker 1: have been a little uptight. Now, Arkansas also missed a
- 9:30Speaker 1: lot of layups in that game.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I mean nearly had three three pointers by the way
- 9:34Speaker 2: the whole game are but a mistake, right.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And I think in Arkinsaw, I think only shot two
- 9:38Speaker 1: for nineteen from the from behind the ark. He can't
- 9:44Speaker 1: blame the coach, but I'm gonna I think I think
- 9:47Speaker 1: that Patino might have got out coached by cal down
- 9:51Speaker 1: the stretch. Not I don't care that Luis Junior was
- 9:57Speaker 1: three for seventeen. He's come through for you all. He
- 10:00Speaker 1: he's the biggest player of the year. It's a close game.
- 10:02Speaker 1: You just need a couple of shots. Look at the
- 10:05Speaker 1: Texas Tech Arkansas game. At the end of the game,
- 10:07Speaker 1: guys who hadn't hit shots with Texas Tech the whole game,
- 10:10Speaker 1: came through making big shots and got them a win
- 10:14Speaker 1: that they probably didn't deserve. The ironic thing is Texas
- 10:18Speaker 1: Tech didn't deserve to be Arkansas. They were outplayed most
- 10:22Speaker 1: of the game, and Texas Tech probably outplayed Florida, and
- 10:27Speaker 1: Florida came through at the end. That's what I mean.
- 10:29Speaker 1: And he's won. And these one offs, these single eliminations,
- 10:33Speaker 1: you gotta every every possession, every free throw is the
- 10:39Speaker 1: detail orientation's gotta be there. If you're not detail orientale
- 10:42Speaker 1: on every possession that can that can cost you tournament.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Now Saint John's going forward, they'll be fine, they'll be good.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I hate to say this because so much was made
- 10:52Speaker 2: about Zoobie returning, remember that whole big deal last week.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I almost feel like the free agency is going to
- 10:57Speaker 2: hit the NCAA. I feel like we're in a free
- 10:59Speaker 2: agent market, no.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Question, that is a free agency mark. And and they
- 11:02Speaker 1: even talking about that some of these players that the
- 11:05Speaker 1: NCAA might say, these guys have to sign contracts. So
- 11:08Speaker 1: who knows what's you know, what's gonna be, how it's
- 11:10Speaker 1: gonna be.
- 11:11Speaker 2: So but off there we've been a battling about this.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I still think Saint John's needs more funding even though
- 11:19Speaker 2: they have Repelly. Are we gonna see both Cohen and
- 11:23Speaker 2: Repelly just inject all the money in the world, and
- 11:26Speaker 2: Queens and and and both these teams, the Mets and
- 11:28Speaker 2: Saint John's gonna win championships? Was gonna happen here?
- 11:31Speaker 1: Well? Still, you have to you have to win it
- 11:33Speaker 1: on on a court, on the field. You know. I
- 11:37Speaker 1: assume that whatever Repelly is asked for by coach Beatino,
- 11:44Speaker 1: as far as money, he's gonna get, I don't. I mean,
- 11:49Speaker 1: he Repell's a billionaire, and you know, obviously he's a
- 11:52Speaker 1: horse guy and sports guy. When I was with the Nets,
- 11:56Speaker 1: he almost brought the Nets. And I think he's a
- 11:58Speaker 1: Mets fan too, And I think he might have been
- 12:00Speaker 1: in the mix for the Mets before Cohen got involved.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I'm not so sure about that. But Saint John's has
- 12:06Speaker 1: already signed this Joshin Sannon, a sharp shooter from from Georgia.
- 12:13Speaker 1: He'll be on the team. They might get the kid
- 12:16Speaker 1: from Providence, Bryce Hopkins, very good player originally at Kentucky,
- 12:22Speaker 1: recruited by Cala Parry. And they're looking at some of
- 12:26Speaker 1: European sharpshooter who I don't know anything about, but apparently
- 12:32Speaker 1: he's a sharp shooter from from Europe.
- 12:35Speaker 2: And I mean, my god, you were in talking like
- 12:38Speaker 2: this during the Kurd of Second days, were you This
- 12:40Speaker 2: is not this is such a totally different area.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Well, it's because it's a different era, it really is.
- 12:47Speaker 1: But that being said, as we go to the finals
- 12:50Speaker 1: and when we wrap up with Sain John, They're gonna
- 12:52Speaker 1: be fine. They'll be fine. And the Big East is
- 12:54Speaker 1: gonna be interesting next year because you have Richard Patino
- 12:57Speaker 1: becoming the head coach at Xavier and Kevin Willard officially,
- 13:02Speaker 1: which the worst kept secret in the world the last
- 13:04Speaker 1: two weeks, becoming the head coach at Villanova. So we
- 13:11Speaker 1: got some good coaches in the Big East. Now they
- 13:13Speaker 1: gotta get they gotta get the talent. So that's that
- 13:16Speaker 1: would be interesting. And you know twenty twenty five twenty
- 13:21Speaker 1: six season on the here before you know it.
- 13:23Speaker 2: But by the way, if Patito won on Saturday, he
- 13:25Speaker 2: would have still gone out to see his son. I mean,
- 13:27Speaker 2: the idea that, oh, well, Abury Loss is gonna go
- 13:29Speaker 2: see your son. Why wouldn't he go see his son play?
- 13:31Speaker 2: The coach the next day.
- 13:32Speaker 1: That's oh, absolutely, without question, anybody who criticized his saying,
- 13:37Speaker 1: what is he supposed to be in mourning because he lost?
- 13:39Speaker 1: Of course he's unhappy that he lost, but you know
- 13:43Speaker 1: he had to go see his son the next day.
- 13:45Speaker 1: You know it was it wasn't like he went he
- 13:46Speaker 1: had to go to Cleveland. The game was in Cleveland's.
- 13:49Speaker 2: He did the right thing, absolutely all right. I don't
- 13:52Speaker 2: want to torpedo this episode at all, but we gotta
- 13:55Speaker 2: go there, Louis, We gotta go there. Thirty six runs
- 13:58Speaker 2: for the Yankees opening weekend and two games, and I
- 14:03Speaker 2: don't want to believe it's all because of a bat.
- 14:05Speaker 2: They've maybe got a different mindset about themselves beyond just
- 14:09Speaker 2: a new bat.
- 14:10Speaker 1: What do you think, Well, alex As I told you
- 14:13Speaker 1: or Fair yesterday, I knew nothing about these torpedo bats
- 14:17Speaker 1: until this weekend, my guest. Major League Baseball has initially
- 14:22Speaker 1: approved and approved them. So it's not like the Yankees cheated. Apparently,
- 14:27Speaker 1: after getting swept by the Braves this weekend, the Braves
- 14:32Speaker 1: getting swept by the Padres this weekend, they are now
- 14:34Speaker 1: going to order torpedo bats.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Hey, you know what I say if it's the Yanks
- 14:39Speaker 2: have one leg up right now. That's how I look
- 14:41Speaker 2: at it.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Oh, okay, I hear you, and I agree with you.
- 14:46Speaker 1: But the five Yankees who use the torpedo bats this
- 14:48Speaker 1: weekend all had big weekends. I mean, is Chisholm gonna
- 14:54Speaker 1: hit forty home runs this year? A guy who might
- 14:56Speaker 1: hit fifteen? Is Valty gonna hit thirty five? Is Goldschmidt
- 15:01Speaker 1: going to find that fountain of youth? A Bellinger's gonna
- 15:05Speaker 1: start hitting home runs? And I mean that home running
- 15:08Speaker 1: hit the other day. I mean he I thought that
- 15:10Speaker 1: was gonna go through the bleachers. So and I had
- 15:13Speaker 1: no idea about the torpedo bats when I was watching
- 15:16Speaker 1: that barrage on Saturday. But if other teams are gonna
- 15:21Speaker 1: start using them, and I guess this physicist that the
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yankees hired, this Aaron lenn Hart from a former MIT physicist,
- 15:33Speaker 1: I don't know I heard. I don't know if this
- 15:35Speaker 1: is confirmed that the Marlins have already had him come
- 15:38Speaker 1: down or gonna he's coming down to see them. This
- 15:41Speaker 1: is the problem. If we're gonna see eight or nine
- 15:43Speaker 1: home runs a game and see fifteenth, twenty to nine,
- 15:48Speaker 1: fifteen to five, fifteen to eleven. It's almost like what
- 15:52Speaker 1: happened at the end of the last century with Maguire
- 15:56Speaker 1: and Sosa. I mean semi so said six feet home
- 16:00Speaker 1: home runs three years in a row. You know that.
- 16:03Speaker 1: That's so we'll have to wait and see the Yankees
- 16:06Speaker 1: to do anything wrong now all the teams know.
- 16:10Speaker 2: But I mean the other thing I say is it
- 16:11Speaker 2: still don't have to hand eye coordination. So I don't know.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Maybe there's just some kind of different mindset that well.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Anthony Volpi's bat speed increased by three miles per hour,
- 16:22Speaker 1: so they all of the five Yankees who use the
- 16:26Speaker 1: torpedo bat, their bat speed increase. Uh with the with
- 16:32Speaker 1: the new torpedo bat.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Now again, Dave Portnoy, judge and not use the bat.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Just to get that clear. Aaron judges and not use
- 16:39Speaker 2: the bat, and.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Lot if he does. If he does, he might he
- 16:42Speaker 1: might hit. He might hit over the Hudson River.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Oh but onto one sixty first Street. Really that's yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 2: I mean.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Whoa so, But it will be it's in its infancy.
- 16:55Speaker 1: We'll see where how how it progresses during the course
- 16:59Speaker 1: of the year, and if if it becomes if it
- 17:01Speaker 1: makes the game a joke. Then Major League Baseball might
- 17:04Speaker 1: have to step in. You know, they've changed the baseballs
- 17:07Speaker 1: over the years. One year that has a rabbit in it,
- 17:10Speaker 1: other years they make it better.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So we'll see, We'll have to see. And you know,
- 17:16Speaker 2: the pitching held its own. Look, the answers were all
- 17:19Speaker 2: that runs, but he still got a pitch and they
- 17:20Speaker 2: held their own against the Brewers. Do you think, because
- 17:23Speaker 2: I see now Milwaukee's going back home, do you think
- 17:27Speaker 2: there's a psyche thing with Nestor because obviously had a
- 17:29Speaker 2: home run. Giving up to Freeman would damage anybody's psyche
- 17:33Speaker 2: and the last year's World Series. Yes, you're asking him
- 17:37Speaker 2: to recover from that in a few months time. I
- 17:39Speaker 2: don't know if he's fully recovered from that loop.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Well, many times I can't say, you know, I can't
- 17:45Speaker 1: say that you're wrong. I can't I don't know. I
- 17:47Speaker 1: can't say that you're right. But to have the combination
- 17:50Speaker 1: of the poor guy throwing the home run ball to
- 17:53Speaker 1: Freeman in Game one of the World Series and then
- 17:55Speaker 1: have his first three pitches back in his old ballpark
- 17:58Speaker 1: against his old team.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Is almost again the base that's already mad at him
- 18:03Speaker 2: for that pitch against Freeman by Day.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that was unbelievable.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Five homers.
- 18:10Speaker 1: That was unbelievable. Though.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I don't blame him for leaving the leaving the media
- 18:15Speaker 2: in the lurge, but I guess he handled it pretty
- 18:17Speaker 2: poorly on Saturday.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Well again, I get I think, and I'm not sure
- 18:23Speaker 1: he was supposed to talk to the media before the
- 18:25Speaker 1: game yesterday. That's fine, obviously, basically what you said that
- 18:32Speaker 1: between what happened last year in the World Series, the
- 18:35Speaker 1: uh pitch to Freeman and what happened Saturday, you gotta
- 18:39Speaker 1: give the guy, the guy a chance to decompress. I mean,
- 18:44Speaker 1: I mean, he's a human being. Maybe he doesn't want
- 18:46Speaker 1: to talk to the media. Maybe he's a phrase. He's
- 18:48Speaker 1: gonna say the wrong things if he speaks to the media.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So he gave him twenty four hours, and he was
- 18:52Speaker 1: supposed to speak to the media before the game yesterday.
- 18:55Speaker 1: I do not know if he did, but I know
- 18:57Speaker 1: he was scheduled too.
- 18:59Speaker 2: So so another thing I heard about this weekend was
- 19:01Speaker 2: a couple of Rays also used the bats, And my
- 19:04Speaker 2: joke was, were they left over at sanburn Or Field?
- 19:06Speaker 2: Is that why they're using them?
- 19:07Speaker 1: Or maybe that's right, Maybe they will. I think the
- 19:11Speaker 1: Red Sox used them in pre season in spring training,
- 19:16Speaker 1: but they did not use them in this weekend series
- 19:19Speaker 1: with the Rangers. We'll see the torpedo bat, unfortunately, is
- 19:23Speaker 1: now going to become front and center.
- 19:25Speaker 2: You mentioned the Marlins, though, I thought they had the
- 19:27Speaker 2: most competitive weekend of all the teams because they really
- 19:30Speaker 2: got it out there a couple of wins there against Pittsburgh.
- 19:32Speaker 1: They had a couple of walk off wins and they're
- 19:35Speaker 1: three in one, So we'll see how long that lasts.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I had made the joke opening day that it's gonna
- 19:41Speaker 2: be Marlin's White Sox because they both won on opening Day,
- 19:44Speaker 2: and you know the White Sox, look, they're actually doing okay.
- 19:47Speaker 2: And then the rain delay hits. I don't know if
- 19:48Speaker 2: they won yesterday or not, but no, they did lose
- 19:51Speaker 2: that game. I mean, what fortunes for that team. Man,
- 19:55Speaker 2: it's just crazy.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Anyway, the over and under in Vegas is fifty three
- 19:59Speaker 1: and a half. Yes, I think I told you some
- 20:04Speaker 1: baseball people like Steve Phillips and Buster Only don't think
- 20:07Speaker 1: they can make they can hit forty five.
- 20:09Speaker 2: So all right, Well, let's get to a guy who
- 20:12Speaker 2: won't need a torpedo vant anytime soon. And he's on
- 20:15Speaker 2: the Mets, and he silenced his critics after striking out
- 20:19Speaker 2: to end the first opening day with a monstrous home
- 20:22Speaker 2: run the next night. I'm of course talking about Won Soto,
- 20:25Speaker 2: and yes, I align myself with the Yankees, media community,
- 20:30Speaker 2: whatever a little more than the Mets. But I'm gonna
- 20:32Speaker 2: report on this guy because he's a sports story. He's
- 20:35Speaker 2: a New York sports story, and I wouldn't be doing
- 20:38Speaker 2: this podcast just as if I didn't talk about him
- 20:40Speaker 2: just because he left the Yankees. The guy's a story,
- 20:43Speaker 2: Lou and every moment he says in the Mets pinstripes
- 20:46Speaker 2: is going to be looked at very closely, wouldn't you say?
- 20:49Speaker 1: Of course, he plays for a New York team that
- 20:52Speaker 1: gets a lot of attention, that has a loyal and
- 20:54Speaker 1: large fan base, And obviously I don't care what anybody says. Yes,
- 20:59Speaker 1: they're in the division, are the Phillies and the Braves,
- 21:03Speaker 1: but their rivals are also the Yankees. And if anybody
- 21:06Speaker 1: thinks that's not true that Yankees Mets Mets Yankees, there's not.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Everybody's looking at what the other team is doing. They're
- 21:15Speaker 1: out of their mind.
- 21:16Speaker 2: This move puts it back on the map, though, because
- 21:19Speaker 2: Judge Soto is such a marketable matchup. You know, NB,
- 21:23Speaker 2: ESPN and all these outlets are going to be all
- 21:25Speaker 2: over that match when it comes May and Junior.
- 21:28Speaker 1: No question about it. There are different type of players. Obviously,
- 21:33Speaker 1: Judge is more of a home run hitter. Soto hit
- 21:36Speaker 1: his career high last year, and he was a left
- 21:39Speaker 1: hand batterer, as we've talked about in the past, had
- 21:41Speaker 1: the short right field porch last year. I don't think
- 21:43Speaker 1: he's gonna have forty one home runs this year. He
- 21:45Speaker 1: could have a better year, but that doesn't mean he's
- 21:46Speaker 1: gonna hit forty one dingers. I think though people gloating, criticizing,
- 21:56Speaker 1: making making focus of that last at bet against you know,
- 22:02Speaker 1: against the Astros. I mean, that was that was ridiculous.
- 22:08Speaker 1: But what you know, whatever, I mean, if they if
- 22:17Speaker 1: fans want to get on them, fine, I mean Yankee
- 22:19Speaker 1: fans myself, I think they're entitled.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I think they're entitled. They gotta get every great player.
- 22:27Speaker 1: If they don't get every great player, something's wrong. No
- 22:31Speaker 1: team has gotten has utilized an outspend for more free
- 22:35Speaker 1: agents since it started back in nineteen seventy five, since
- 22:39Speaker 1: the then the Yankees. You know, he decided to play
- 22:44Speaker 1: for the Mets, you know, and that's that was his decision.
- 22:49Speaker 1: We'll see, but it was just ridiculous that they made
- 22:54Speaker 1: such a big deal out out of one at that,
- 22:56Speaker 1: out of six hundred at back, this guy's going to
- 22:58Speaker 1: get this year.
- 23:01Speaker 2: But you know what I'm gonna notice. I want to
- 23:03Speaker 2: notice about this Met team too, is how different the
- 23:06Speaker 2: culture is. Because I felt like when Soto was in
- 23:08Speaker 2: the Yanking lineup, they were so much more patient at
- 23:10Speaker 2: the plate. They drew their walks, they they were able
- 23:13Speaker 2: to not swing and everything. And I think Soto teach
- 23:15Speaker 2: that a little bit. I think he's gonna do the
- 23:16Speaker 2: same in Queens. They might have a lot more walks
- 23:18Speaker 2: this year, Lou because of that, that kind of patient
- 23:21Speaker 2: Soto preaches, well that.
- 23:23Speaker 1: That definitely could be I mean, that could be contagious.
- 23:26Speaker 1: And even against Josh Hater when Hater struck him out,
- 23:29Speaker 1: he was ahead on the count three and oh, I
- 23:32Speaker 1: thought he was going to get the swing sign on three,
- 23:33Speaker 1: and oh, I really did he did it? Maybe he did,
- 23:36Speaker 1: but he decided not to swing, and you saw him
- 23:39Speaker 1: swing at a pitch that usually an undisciplined picture, undisciplined
- 23:45Speaker 1: hitter swings at so that the fact that he swung
- 23:48Speaker 1: at that pitch that was way outside, he must have
- 23:51Speaker 1: been fooled by the motion. And you know, Josh Hader
- 23:54Speaker 1: is a terrific picture. That's why they're paying them fifteen
- 23:56Speaker 1: million dollars a year. But he's fine. I mean, I
- 24:00Speaker 1: mean to question the other questions about the Mets. Do
- 24:03Speaker 1: they have enough pitching? And they pitched very well this weekend,
- 24:07Speaker 1: both the stars in the bullpen. Holmes was okay. He
- 24:10Speaker 1: was nowhere near like he was in Florida during spring training.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I think they'll be okay. I think they'll add a
- 24:17Speaker 1: pitcher during the course of the season.
- 24:21Speaker 2: All right, one of the storyline to me. The other
- 24:24Speaker 2: one about this opening weekend is the Dodgers are five
- 24:28Speaker 2: and oh when will they get their loss? Lewis It's
- 24:31Speaker 2: got to come at some point, right. They're not gonna
- 24:33Speaker 2: go one sixty two and out. That's impossible.
- 24:36Speaker 1: No, I mean, I think the Dodgers, if they keep
- 24:40Speaker 1: their foot on the gas pedal, could win one hundred
- 24:42Speaker 1: and ten, one hundred and eleven games. I really do
- 24:46Speaker 1: their bullpen is unbelievable, their lineup is unbelievable. They'll be
- 24:52Speaker 1: the heavy favorites they should be. But will they lose
- 24:56Speaker 1: a game? They can? They gonna lose. That's the one
- 24:59Speaker 1: thing about baseball. Even who was at least fifty five
- 25:01Speaker 1: to sixty games every year, no matter how big you are,
- 25:05Speaker 1: so so, they'll lose games. But yes, they've gotten off
- 25:10Speaker 1: to a good start.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I'd say, all right, one last baseball trivia for you here.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Do you know what yesterday was? And as as my
- 25:18Speaker 2: dad's was a Cub fan, I had a fella acknowledged.
- 25:22Speaker 2: You know what happened on March thirtieth, nineteen ninety two.
- 25:26Speaker 1: March thirtieth, nineteen ninety two, So usually baseball seasons didn't
- 25:31Speaker 1: start to April, but that one, I guess must have
- 25:32Speaker 1: started in March. Oh.
- 25:33Speaker 2: It was actually a transaction more than anything else. It
- 25:36Speaker 2: was actually a trade that happened in the Windy City
- 25:41Speaker 2: that brought Sosa to the cub.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Can beat me too, I was gonna say, between the
- 25:45Speaker 1: two Chicago.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Teams, Yes, between the crosstown rivals, and what a historic
- 25:49Speaker 2: move that ends up being right, But that happened on
- 25:52Speaker 2: that date nineteen ninety two. Oh yeah, the White Sox
- 25:56Speaker 2: lost that trade in a lot of ways.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I would and that's why you really don't make trades
- 26:02Speaker 1: with your incity rival. You really don't. I don't care
- 26:05Speaker 1: what the sport is because that blew up in the
- 26:08Speaker 1: White Sox face.
- 26:10Speaker 2: It really did. And we'll have to see, well, we
- 26:13Speaker 2: did see how that happened. We'll have to see what
- 26:15Speaker 2: other trades go down, and we'll have to see how
- 26:16Speaker 2: the Crosstown conversion goes for Soto in the loan. And
- 26:19Speaker 2: he's got fifteen years here, so we'll have to see.
- 26:21Speaker 1: How he does have fifteen years by again, he does
- 26:23Speaker 1: have it out after five, so it might be just
- 26:25Speaker 1: five years.
- 26:27Speaker 2: So we'll see, Yes, we will, all right, Lou, I
- 26:32Speaker 2: know you want to talk about hockey as well, because
- 26:36Speaker 2: the Grade eight is literally what five goals away or
- 26:40Speaker 2: four goals away now, at least from tying him and
- 26:42Speaker 2: then passing him. We've talked about it. To get it
- 26:46Speaker 2: this year, To get it this year was unthinkable. At
- 26:49Speaker 2: the start of the season, it was unthinkable.
- 26:51Speaker 1: He got off to a fast start and then he
- 26:53Speaker 1: broke his leg and he missed sixteen games, and I
- 26:57Speaker 1: thought he was going to miss much more than that.
- 26:59Speaker 1: And when he came back from the broken leg, he
- 27:02Speaker 1: started scoring again, picked up where he left off. He's
- 27:07Speaker 1: the greatest goal scorer I've ever seen. He is in
- 27:14Speaker 1: an era where scoring is not like it was in
- 27:17Speaker 1: Gretzky's time and of the you know, the eighties and nineties.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Can he do it this year? He's got nine to
- 27:27Speaker 1: ten games left to score five goals. He can do it.
- 27:32Speaker 1: It's going to make it interesting for these last three weeks,
- 27:34Speaker 1: not only with Theovechkin race to become the old time
- 27:39Speaker 1: NHL goal scorer, but to see which one of these
- 27:44Speaker 1: very very floored teams gets that last playoff spot in
- 27:47Speaker 1: the East. You got Montreal, you got the Blue Jackets,
- 27:52Speaker 1: you got the Red Wings, you got the Islanders, and
- 27:54Speaker 1: you got the Rangers. None of them are above five
- 27:57Speaker 1: hundred in the last ten games. They're all bunched up.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Montreal has a two point lead on the Rangers. They
- 28:04Speaker 1: also have a game in hand on the Rangers. Montreal
- 28:08Speaker 1: had lost five in a row, and you figured they
- 28:11Speaker 1: would have lost six in a row, but somehow they
- 28:13Speaker 1: won down in Floria against the Stanley Cup champions yesterday.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I still think the Rangers will sneak in. But the
- 28:20Speaker 1: Rangers are very fortunate that the teams around them are
- 28:24Speaker 1: playing just as bad as they are. So that's going
- 28:27Speaker 1: to go right down to April seventeenth, Alex. I really
- 28:29Speaker 1: believe that. The other thing about hockey that is really
- 28:34Speaker 1: driving me crazy, and it's course the Islanders at least
- 28:37Speaker 1: two points in the standings, maybe three, is this goal
- 28:42Speaker 1: tender interference. They were absolutely jobbed out of a win
- 28:46Speaker 1: with nine seconds to go last week against against the Canucks,
- 28:50Speaker 1: and the week before that Montreal was credited with the
- 28:54Speaker 1: goal that was incredibly more obvious as goal tender interference
- 28:59Speaker 1: than the August call last week on Kyle Palmry. So
- 29:03Speaker 1: that's two points right there that the Islanders would have gone.
- 29:07Speaker 1: So that's how close this is. But the NHL has
- 29:10Speaker 1: got to get a grip on this goaltender interference. It's
- 29:14Speaker 1: really that was that was a joke the other night.
- 29:16Speaker 1: So of course the Islanders went, you know, put them
- 29:19Speaker 1: ahead with nine seconds to go, and that's a point
- 29:21Speaker 1: they didn't get.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Doesn't have anyone that second wild card spot though, I mean, seriously,
- 29:25Speaker 2: I feel like no one wants it, as people have
- 29:27Speaker 2: been pointing out, so.
- 29:29Speaker 1: It looks like no one wants it. I still think
- 29:31Speaker 1: the Rangers are going to get it, but huh, the
- 29:36Speaker 1: Blue Jackets might. Hey, the Blue Jackson it looks like
- 29:40Speaker 1: they're going to turn it around, and they haven't. I
- 29:43Speaker 1: think the I think the Range are going to sneak in.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I really do. I think they'll get that last spot.
- 29:48Speaker 1: And if they don't, what's the future of Coach Lavalette.
- 29:54Speaker 1: If the Islanders don't get in, what's the future of
- 29:57Speaker 1: Patrick Waugh. I mean, I'm some prize that he hasn't
- 30:01Speaker 1: put more of his stamp on the Islander team. I
- 30:04Speaker 1: thought they'd be more detailed, the oriented on the ice.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Just too many bonehead plays on the ice, no no
- 30:14Speaker 1: attention to these little things that that separates winning from losing. Obviously,
- 30:20Speaker 1: their power play and their panty kill are horrendous and
- 30:25Speaker 1: that's caught. That's cost in the playoff spot for sure.
- 30:28Speaker 1: So uh, just we'll see if they don't make it, Alex,
- 30:32Speaker 1: what's gonna happen Rangers from President Trophy to uh to
- 30:37Speaker 1: odd of the playoffs or even to the eighth spot again.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Even the Devils. Now the Devils have lost their best defenseman.
- 30:46Speaker 1: They've lost Jack Hughes. Next year, yeah, it's a great
- 30:52Speaker 1: they have a young talent, but next year they gotta
- 30:55Speaker 1: they gotta make that big jump. I don't I don't
- 30:58Speaker 1: expect them to be a Stanley Cup deep run, make
- 31:05Speaker 1: us deep run the Cup. But next year they got
- 31:07Speaker 1: they gotta be a contenter. So I wonder what general
- 31:11Speaker 1: manager Tom Fitzgerald thinks of his team team in the
- 31:16Speaker 1: off season. Yes, they're gonna get those injured guys back
- 31:19Speaker 1: and uses a point the game guy. But that's going
- 31:23Speaker 1: to be an interesting also team to look at in
- 31:27Speaker 1: the off season. So the three local hockey teams keep
- 31:30Speaker 1: a close eye on them.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Well, guess what, I'm hoping it keeps something eye we're
- 31:34Speaker 2: going to I'm hoping to take Gaby in Newark and
- 31:36Speaker 2: see the Rangers put the Devils. But we'll see. It's
- 31:39Speaker 2: a bit of a hike from the train to the arena,
- 31:41Speaker 2: so we gotta see how that's gonna work out. But
- 31:43Speaker 2: it's gonna be a pivotal game Saturday. It is, it
- 31:45Speaker 2: really is.
- 31:47Speaker 1: It is. And you know, even though the Devils have
- 31:49Speaker 1: a little cushion, you know, they want they would love
- 31:52Speaker 1: to knock the Rangers out.
- 31:54Speaker 2: They would love about a rivalry, and I often felt
- 31:56Speaker 2: the Devil's Ranger rivalry was so strong. But I don't
- 32:00Speaker 2: know when they left the arena and moved further into Jersey,
- 32:03Speaker 2: it wasn't the same. I mean literally, you could just
- 32:06Speaker 2: take a bust over the Continental Airlines Arena for that
- 32:09Speaker 2: matchup or a bust to the Garden and now it's
- 32:11Speaker 2: all different. Yeah, it is.
- 32:14Speaker 1: It might be a little bit different, but I think
- 32:16Speaker 1: I think it's still it's still It's obviously it is intense.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I don't think it's as intense as Range as Islanders,
- 32:24Speaker 1: which I think is the best rivalry in New York sports.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Uh when they play on the when they play on
- 32:31Speaker 1: the ice. So uh So the Devils will try to
- 32:37Speaker 1: We'll do everything in their power to op the Wolf.
- 32:39Speaker 1: And here got I gotta really give And we've talked
- 32:42Speaker 1: about him in the past, but I gotta give a
- 32:43Speaker 1: plug to a Nico Nicohiesha. That guy. That guy has
- 32:48Speaker 1: a little bit of Brian Trotchi ate him and he's
- 32:50Speaker 1: a two way player. He reminds me of Trachy a
- 32:53Speaker 1: little bit. He's the captain. Uh. You know, they have
- 32:58Speaker 1: so much talent they really they really just got to
- 33:02Speaker 1: get over that hump and go deep in the players.
- 33:05Speaker 1: They really have a good roster. So we'll see. We'll
- 33:10Speaker 1: see how far they can go without their best defenseman
- 33:15Speaker 1: and Dougie Hamilton, without their best player in Jack Hughes.
- 33:20Speaker 1: We'll see how far they can do.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Absolutely correct, We'll have to see. It'll be fun. And then,
- 33:27Speaker 2: you know, it's funny that the Capitals are the first
- 33:29Speaker 2: team to clinch the playoffs spot because they're just they're
- 33:32Speaker 2: they're the highlight right now. And this whole thing on
- 33:35Speaker 2: the Western side of things though, I mean, we should
- 33:37Speaker 2: cover them for a minute because the Oilers are just disappointing.
- 33:42Speaker 2: And I know we talk about it every year, but
- 33:44Speaker 2: just not with Connor McDavid. How do you rank that
- 33:47Speaker 2: look in the West? I just don't understand it.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Lewis well everything and he's missed the last week that
- 33:57Speaker 1: the playoffs are gonna be everything to them. They got
- 34:00Speaker 1: they gotta again make another deep run. I don't think.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna get to the Stanley Cup
- 34:05Speaker 1: Final like they did last year. I actually have more
- 34:09Speaker 1: confidence in the most popular Canadian team, the Toronto Maple Leafs,
- 34:17Speaker 1: to finally go deep into the playoffs. Uh. John Taveres
- 34:22Speaker 1: is having a great second half of the year. Uh,
- 34:24Speaker 1: he really is. And you know he's on the now,
- 34:29Speaker 1: he's really on the Hall of Fame path. So but
- 34:34Speaker 1: the but for that, for the Maple Leafs, it's all
- 34:37Speaker 1: about the playoffs. If they flame out in the playoffs
- 34:39Speaker 1: and loose to the Panthers, whether or or the lightning, uh,
- 34:43Speaker 1: you know, it's it's failure. It's failure. I mean, Alex,
- 34:47Speaker 1: I was fourteen years old the last time the Toronto
- 34:50Speaker 1: Maple Leafs won the Cup. And let me tell you, buddy,
- 34:52Speaker 1: that was a long long time ago.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Austin Matthews, though, is just is killing it. And I
- 34:59Speaker 2: know he had that rough final against Canada, but hey,
- 35:03Speaker 2: I still want to see the guy succeed. He's a
- 35:05Speaker 2: great player.
- 35:06Speaker 1: He's a fantastic player.
- 35:08Speaker 2: And but that and by the way, have of that stuff.
- 35:11Speaker 2: But against Canada was on its fault. Binghamton was on
- 35:14Speaker 2: his head though.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Absolutely time you're on a hundred percent right. It's not
- 35:18Speaker 1: that he missed the wide open net or anything. They
- 35:22Speaker 1: got a great team. William Niland has watched forty two
- 35:24Speaker 1: forty three goals Matthews did Tavares. I know this guy
- 35:32Speaker 1: is underrated. Mitch Mahner. I mean, the guy's a great player.
- 35:36Speaker 1: He played for Team Canada. He scored a goal overtime
- 35:38Speaker 1: against Sweden to win to win that game in the
- 35:41Speaker 1: in the Four Nations. He's a great passer. He can
- 35:45Speaker 1: penalty kill, he can score on the power play, can
- 35:47Speaker 1: score five on five. Oh I would love to have
- 35:49Speaker 1: him on the Islands. Oh, oh my god, I really would.
- 35:55Speaker 1: But again, the pressure is going to be on come
- 35:58Speaker 1: playoff time.
- 36:01Speaker 2: By the way, I'm rocking o'haris today because it's the shamrock.
- 36:04Speaker 2: It's the last day of March. This is always Saint
- 36:06Speaker 2: Patrick's same month, so why not end it with a
- 36:07Speaker 2: little bit of a shamrock.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Alex, you look great and at that shirt?
- 36:13Speaker 2: Thank you? All right? One other things, and we got
- 36:15Speaker 2: to cover it basketball. I mean, look, we've said it
- 36:19Speaker 2: time and time again, but the Carl Anthony Towns trade
- 36:23Speaker 2: is just brilliant. And then I see people saying how
- 36:25Speaker 2: they miss Dante, and look, if you kept Dante with
- 36:28Speaker 2: this team, they would be electric, There's no doubt about it.
- 36:31Speaker 2: But I would take Towns over Dante, you know, I
- 36:35Speaker 2: really would.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I mean, Dante Devincenzo fit the Knicks last year, no
- 36:41Speaker 1: question about it. But no, Carl Anthony Towns may not
- 36:46Speaker 1: be a great defender, but he's he's an excellent rebounder.
- 36:50Speaker 1: He can hit the three, he can score off, he
- 36:52Speaker 1: can put the ball on the floor. For a guy
- 36:54Speaker 1: that big, he can score. No, and yeah, no, don't
- 36:58Speaker 1: worry about By the way, see Dante de Vincenzo again
- 37:01Speaker 1: into a huge fight last night. There was a huge fight.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Between Oh my gosh.
- 37:06Speaker 1: There. It's gonna be interesting to see what Adam Silver
- 37:09Speaker 1: does as far as discipline. I mean, a bunch of guys.
- 37:13Speaker 2: There.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Yeah, no, uh, I remember that night. I was watching
- 37:18Speaker 1: live that night.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I know it twenty years ago already. That's crazy, that
- 37:22Speaker 2: time's flying. But I think it was two thousand and four, Yeah,
- 37:25Speaker 2: about twenty one years ago. And I just I got
- 37:28Speaker 2: a flashback of that. And by the way, I really
- 37:31Speaker 2: thought the Brewers were gonna plunk some of the one
- 37:33Speaker 2: of these guys before they left town. I really was
- 37:35Speaker 2: waiting for that. But it didn't happen a lot.
- 37:38Speaker 1: I'm surprised that they did it. That's that's true. So
- 37:41Speaker 1: it was no ball in the Bronx. But there was
- 37:43Speaker 1: a brawl in the NBA last night.
- 37:45Speaker 2: And the one last interesting thing about all this is
- 37:48Speaker 2: that Detroit's actually doing better than you know, they have
- 37:51Speaker 2: in previous years. And when teams are successful, it pisses
- 37:54Speaker 2: off people.
- 37:55Speaker 1: You know, Well, I mean I think last year they
- 37:57Speaker 1: won fourteen games. And what's happened is they've gotten all
- 38:01Speaker 1: these young and they've had these draft picks. They've hit
- 38:03Speaker 1: on some of these draft picks, and now they'll they've
- 38:06Speaker 1: they've learned how to play at the NBA help, So
- 38:11Speaker 1: they've done a great job. The Houston Rockets have done
- 38:14Speaker 1: a great job. Emi Adca has just on a fantastic
- 38:19Speaker 1: coaching job at the Rockets two years ago. When twenty
- 38:21Speaker 1: two games and their next one will be number fifty,
- 38:24Speaker 1: that's tremendous.
- 38:26Speaker 2: So shatout was it wasn't he in the running for
- 38:28Speaker 2: the next job or had the Net job?
- 38:31Speaker 1: Well, he was a Net assistant coach, went to Boston,
- 38:34Speaker 1: had that incident, yeh with uh with us with someone
- 38:41Speaker 1: in the Celtics organization, and uh, then the Nets, we're
- 38:45Speaker 1: gonna hire them, but backed off and then they hired
- 38:49Speaker 1: Jordi Fernandez who's who's done an outstanding job. I mean
- 38:53Speaker 1: that they're winning games with the G League team when
- 38:55Speaker 1: when they really don't want to see them win games. Uh,
- 38:58Speaker 1: because I wanted to see them be in position to
- 39:01Speaker 1: get a Cooper flag, which they're not. But Cooper flag,
- 39:04Speaker 1: by the way, and we'll finish here. Cooper Flag is
- 39:08Speaker 1: better than I thought. He's getting better every game. Duke
- 39:11Speaker 1: is most talented team left. I don't know if they're
- 39:14Speaker 1: gonna win, but every one of those guys are so
- 39:19Speaker 1: good and John Shire has done such a fantastic job
- 39:23Speaker 1: right with this team. They might they could lose to
- 39:27Speaker 1: a veteran team, a team of more you know that's
- 39:29Speaker 1: a little deeper, like a floorer, like an Auburn who's
- 39:32Speaker 1: more of a veteran team. But it's gonna be an
- 39:34Speaker 1: interesting It will be an interesting final four. Yeah, Alex,
- 39:37Speaker 1: you do have the four best teams really left.
- 39:41Speaker 2: There were ones for a reason. Now we got to
- 39:43Speaker 2: see where we carry where it gets carried to ye
- 39:47Speaker 2: all right, lou loved our chat today. I feel like
- 39:50Speaker 2: there's so much more we can unpack, but we'll do
- 39:52Speaker 2: that next time as the final four hits here. Juan
- 39:57Speaker 2: Soto's opening appearance in Flush this week. I mean, look,
- 40:02Speaker 2: it's just fun and it's just rolling. And by the way,
- 40:04Speaker 2: I hope if I get to a game this week,
- 40:07Speaker 2: crutch is not breaking, right.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I hope that's not so bad for you. I knew
- 40:13Speaker 1: you were going to the game Saturday, so I, as
- 40:15Speaker 1: you know, I text you we have those three home runs,
- 40:17Speaker 1: and I said, I hope you were sitting in your
- 40:19Speaker 1: seat to see this history. And then you text me
- 40:22Speaker 1: saying I broke my crutch on the on the l
- 40:26Speaker 1: I r R so sorry about that. My friend can't
- 40:29Speaker 1: make it up.
- 40:31Speaker 2: But my point to finish off here is what I
- 40:32Speaker 2: was going to say, is this, if they're the if
- 40:36Speaker 2: I'm the reason they lose the first game of the season,
- 40:39Speaker 2: I might not show up at the same rest of
- 40:40Speaker 2: I really want to know when I'm there, Okay, I
- 40:43Speaker 2: don't want to be there when they lose their.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Well, don't worry. If you're there and I lose the
- 40:48Speaker 1: first game, it's not because of you. That I could
- 40:50Speaker 1: tell you.
- 40:51Speaker 2: It will all be because of you, and I see
- 40:53Speaker 2: Jazz posted up about fourteen minutes ago sounding off about
- 40:58Speaker 2: the Yankees torpedo back. He said okay, explanation, the barrel
- 41:02Speaker 2: is bigger and within MLB regulations. Jazz went on to
- 41:06Speaker 2: a right for the idiots that say he's moved to
- 41:08Speaker 2: the label, you're an idiot. No one is trying to
- 41:11Speaker 2: get jammed up. Just move the wood from the parts
- 41:14Speaker 2: you don't use to the parts you do. You're welcome.
- 41:17Speaker 2: No more stress for y'all. So there you go.
- 41:21Speaker 1: The torpedo bats will become part of this early part
- 41:26Speaker 1: of baseball season, for sure, There's no doubt about it.
- 41:30Speaker 2: So it'll be fun, all right. It'll be something to watch.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Torpedo gated, I guess we'll call it.
- 41:35Speaker 1: It's something that Major League Baseball just has to keep
- 41:38Speaker 1: an eye on. They don't want to make a mockery
- 41:39Speaker 1: the game, and if they start getting skewed, it's not good.
- 41:43Speaker 1: But Alex, always a pleasure, Thank you very much, and
- 41:47Speaker 1: I look forward to next week.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Yes, sir, indeed, all right, thanks so much. Luke Terminolo
