- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 23rd of
- 0:16July, and I'm so delighted that you have tapped on play, invited
- 0:20me into whatever your day looks like, whether you are by your
- 0:23lonesome, whether you are with your loved one, whether you're
- 0:27with your family, whether you are with some friends, wherever
- 0:30you are listening. So good to have your company as
- 0:33you and I are going to keep on reading through God's word on
- 0:37today, which is the most extreme day of the year.
- 0:40That's right. This is the day that
- 0:42statistically gets the hottest in the summer of the Northern
- 0:46hemisphere and the coldest in the winter of the Southern
- 0:50hemisphere, and it's a little over a month behind the
- 0:53solstice. Well, because our oceans are
- 0:55particularly good at holding a temperature, so it takes takes
- 0:58them about a month to catch up with the fact that we are
- 1:01warming up or cooling down, depending on where you are.
- 1:04So here we are at the day of extremes, and this is a day that
- 1:08we continue with these extremes of not committing adultery.
- 1:12And then toward the latter half of this reading, this chapter,
- 1:16we are going to move into Do Not Steal where it will begin,
- 1:21looking at the dignity of people and their possessions.
- 1:25And so this is this continuation of Moses unpacking God's law for
- 1:30what it's going to look like for the Israelite people as they
- 1:33leave their time in the wilderness and enter into the
- 1:35promised land. What it treats that we get to
- 1:38hear this word of instruction, this order, this setting up of
- 1:43the way things will be for the society, and listen to God's
- 1:47themes as they ring through the ages right here to your life and
- 1:51to mine. So let's do just that as we
- 1:54continue reading together. Deuteronomy chapter 23.
- 2:09If a man's testicles are crushed or his penis is cut off, he may
- 2:14not be admitted to the assembly of the Lord.
- 2:17If a person is illegitimate by birth, neither he nor his
- 2:20descendants for 10 generations may be admitted to the assembly
- 2:24of the Lord. No Ammonite or Moabite or any of
- 2:28their descendants for 10 generations may be admitted to
- 2:32the assembly of the Lord. These nations did not welcome
- 2:35you with food and water when you came out of Egypt.
- 2:39Instead, they hide Balaam son of Beor from Pathor in distant Aram
- 2:44Naharam to curse you. But the Lord your God refused to
- 2:49listen to Balaam. He turned the intended curse
- 2:52into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you as long as
- 2:57you live. You must never promote the
- 2:59welfare and prosperity of the Ammonites or Moabites.
- 3:03Do not detest the Edomites or the Egyptians because the
- 3:06Edomites are your relatives and you lived as foreigners among
- 3:10the Egyptians. The third generation of Edomites
- 3:13and Egyptians may enter the assembly of the Lord.
- 3:17When you go to war against your enemies, be sure to stay away
- 3:21from anything that is impure. Any man who becomes ceremonially
- 3:26defiled because of a nocturnal omission must leave the camp and
- 3:30stay away all day. Toward evening he must bathe
- 3:34himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.
- 3:39You must have a designated area outside the camp where you can
- 3:43go to relieve yourself. Each of you must have a spade as
- 3:47part of your equipment. Whenever you relieve yourself,
- 3:50dig a hole with the spade and cover the excrement.
- 3:54The camp must be holy, for the Lord your God moves around in
- 3:58your camp to protect you and to defeat your enemies.
- 4:02He must not see any shameful thing among you, or he will turn
- 4:06away from you. If the slaves should escape from
- 4:10their masters and take refuge with you, you must not hand them
- 4:13over to their masters. Let them live among you in any
- 4:17town they choose, and do not oppress them.
- 4:20No Israelite where the man or woman may become a temple
- 4:24prostitute. If you are bringing an offering
- 4:27to fulfil a vow, you must not bring to the House of the Lord
- 4:31your God any offering from the earnings of a prostitute,
- 4:34whether a man or a woman, for both are detestable to the Lord
- 4:39your God. Do not charge interest on the
- 4:42loans you make to a fellow Israelite, whether you loan
- 4:45money or food or anything else. You may charge interest to
- 4:49foreigners, but you may not charge interest to Israelites so
- 4:53that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you do in the
- 4:57land you are about to enter and occupy.
- 5:01When you make a vow to the Lord your God, be prompt in
- 5:05fulfilling whatever you promised him, for the Lord your God
- 5:08demands that you promptly fulfil all your vows, or you will be
- 5:13guilty of sin. However, it is not a sin to
- 5:17refrain from making a vow. But once you have voluntarily
- 5:20made a vow, be careful to fulfil your promise to the Lord your
- 5:24God. When you enter your neighbour's
- 5:27vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, but you must not
- 5:32carry any away in a basket. And when you enter your
- 5:36neighbour's field of grain, you may pluck the heads of grain
- 5:39with your hand, but you must not harvest it with a sickle.
- 5:53Jesus, thank you that you are not an aloof, distant, far away
- 5:57and uninterested God. Here you wade deep into the
- 6:02stuff of our lives, the shameful places, the practical places,
- 6:08the celebratory places. Thank you that you have this
- 6:13keen interest in US and the ups and downs and the middle
- 6:18mundanities of our lives. Thank you that when you come to
- 6:23save us and transform us and to draw us into your family, that
- 6:28is not just a ceremonial change, but it changes our very being.
- 6:33We become your children and we are members of your family, and
- 6:37that calls us to a different way of being.
- 6:41Jesus, I pray that your transformational work in US
- 6:45continues and that your Spirit grows in US to make us daily
- 6:51more and more like the people you made us to be, so that in
- 6:55this world and by our lives we can shine Your presence, your
- 7:00light, and your love and a different way of being.
- 7:05And thank you that you first showed us this different way of
- 7:08being with your generosity and your love and your selflessness.
- 7:13You are good to us and we love you.
- 7:16We pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
