- 0:34Speaker 1: it's a special episode. I know you love gambling stories.
- 0:39Speaker 1: You know I love gambling stories. It's how I got
- 0:43Speaker 1: into this was just hearing good stories about people who gamble,
- 0:49Speaker 1: people who take risk, the language of betting, all of that,
- 0:53Speaker 1: the romance of it all is fascinating to me. So
- 0:59Speaker 1: today we're going to be joined by producer Matt Mitchell,
- 1:03Speaker 1: who we love to have on the show. He's always
- 1:06Speaker 1: he's a high quality ad as they say, he's also
- 1:09Speaker 1: excited for this one. He's taken us through a list
- 1:11Speaker 1: of great moments, a historical gambling history, a collection of
- 1:18Speaker 1: very special stories that he's curated just for you, for me,
- 1:23Speaker 1: our audience, who he believes are also going to love

- 2:06Speaker 1: Chad, this is going to be the Matt Mitchell episode,
- 2:08Speaker 1: But I feel like this is a a combination of
- 2:12Speaker 1: how I built this and Drunk History. Remember the show
- 2:16Speaker 1: Drunk History.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yes, this is very similar to that except so yes,
- 2:20Speaker 3: I love that show.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Was when I favorites. We actually did this when we
- 2:25Speaker 1: first started Action. I remember I wanted to do shows
- 2:29Speaker 1: that were like Drunk History for gambling. Do you remember this, Matt,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and we did? I like, you know, Terry Glenn catching
- 2:36Speaker 1: that pass from Doug from Drew Bledsoe to beat the
- 2:39Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills and we did drunk History, bad Beats, Yeah,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and it was super fun, really really fun. So I'm
- 2:46Speaker 1: excited to do this today and I'm glad you had
- 2:49Speaker 1: this idea. I always like getting Matt Mitchell. The more
- 2:51Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell on the show, the better. As a reminder

- 3:51Speaker 3: Guys, I am unbelievably excited about this live event. I
- 3:57Speaker 3: was hoping we could do it in Chicago. We were
- 3:59Speaker 3: able to convince them of that. I was hoping we
- 4:02Speaker 3: do it at Joe's Joe's barr on Weed Street commonly
- 4:05Speaker 3: and affectionately known as Joe's Onweed. We got that. I
- 4:08Speaker 3: was hoping it would be from March twenty ninth, the

- 4:45Speaker 3: absolute riot.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Save the date March twenty ninth. Matt, you're basically doing
- 4:51Speaker 1: your life's goal here, which is co opting the show completely.
- 4:55Speaker 1: So I will do my best hosting here and just
- 4:59Speaker 1: past the baton to you, can you please tell us
- 5:04Speaker 1: what happened to Captain Patten and Mary Anne Patton?
- 5:11Speaker 3: All right, So this first story is the story of
- 5:13Speaker 3: an American clipper ship called Neptune's Car in the year
- 5:19Speaker 3: eighteen fifty three.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Boy, every listener is so excited they definitely did not
- 5:24Speaker 1: fast forward till we get to the ad reads.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Thank you, Chad, your excitement is palpable. One of the
- 5:32Speaker 3: hardest parts about doing stories like this is for the listener,
- 5:36Speaker 3: what are you supposed to be picturing? So I'm going
- 5:38Speaker 3: to do you a favor here. I'm going to kind
- 5:40Speaker 3: of instruct you on what you should be visualizing, okay,
- 5:43Speaker 3: because this is a long time ago, all right, So
- 5:45Speaker 3: for listeners at home, for Neptune's Car, you just picture
- 5:48Speaker 3: a big ass wooden sailing ship. It's a beautiful, bold
- 5:52Speaker 3: ship with sales in the whole thing. When you picture
- 5:56Speaker 3: who owns the ship, the financiers kind of behind the ship,
- 6:00Speaker 3: I want you to just picture the owners and operators
- 6:03Speaker 3: of the Cleveland Browns. Okay, we'll use the Browns as
- 6:07Speaker 3: our extended metaphor. I thought for sure you were gonna
- 6:10Speaker 3: say me, no, no, it's you'll see why at the end.
- 6:14Speaker 3: It's basically the Cleveland Browns go to see all right.
- 6:17Speaker 3: So this ship, Neptune's Car, takes her maiden voyage from
- 6:21Speaker 3: New York City in eighteen fifty three, and it's a
- 6:24Speaker 3: total disaster. The captain worked the crew so hard that
- 6:29Speaker 3: there's a mutiny and he threatened to kill all of them.
- 6:32Speaker 3: And by the time they get back to New York,
- 6:34Speaker 3: everything's a total mess, Cleveland Brown style. So for the
- 6:38Speaker 3: next voyage, these eighteen fifties Browns, they need a new captain.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:43Speaker 3: So on about twelve hours notice, they land on a
- 6:46Speaker 3: guy named Captain Joshua Patten, and Captain Patten had just
- 6:50Speaker 3: married his wife, Mary Anne, who was just shy of
- 6:53Speaker 3: her sixteenth birthday, as was the style at the time.
- 6:56Speaker 3: So we've got Captain Patten and we got his teen bride,
- 7:00Speaker 3: Mary Anne, for this first trip on the on Neptune's car.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Mary Ann insists on joining her husband, Captain Patten, which
- 7:09Speaker 3: was extremely unusual, but her father was a sea captain.
- 7:13Speaker 3: She loved to see her husband's like sounds great, why not?
- 7:17Speaker 3: So they set sail around the world.
- 7:20Speaker 1: What could go wrong?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Yep?
- 7:21Speaker 1: With my sixteen year old bride on a round the
- 7:24Speaker 1: world voyage and a seafolo crewman.
- 7:28Speaker 3: It's gonna go great, and indeed it does. The entire voyage.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Mary Anne, who again is not an official member of
- 7:36Speaker 3: the Browns for the purposes of this metaphor, she's teaching
- 7:39Speaker 3: herself navigation, She's showing herself how to use charts, she's
- 7:43Speaker 3: learning medicine. She's just being a real kind of young
- 7:46Speaker 3: go getter here. And they go from New York around
- 7:49Speaker 3: the bottom of South America. I remember there's no Panama
- 7:52Speaker 3: Canal yet, that's like seventy five years away, so you
- 7:54Speaker 3: got to go the long way around South America. They
- 7:57Speaker 3: go to San Francisco, they go to China, then they
- 7:59Speaker 3: go to London, they go back to New York, game
- 8:02Speaker 3: balls all around. Huge success. Wow, incredible job, Captain Patten.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Maybe this chip isn't cursed after all. Here is where
- 8:11Speaker 3: the gambling comes in. When it's time for the next
- 8:14Speaker 3: trip from New York to San Francisco the Cleveland Brown's ownership. Here,
- 8:19Speaker 3: they discover that there are three other ships making this
- 8:23Speaker 3: journey at about the same time. So in addition to
- 8:26Speaker 3: all the money they have tied up in this operation,
- 8:29Speaker 3: they make a very large wager with those other boats
- 8:33Speaker 3: to see who's going to get to San Francisco first.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Obviously a proud and time honored tradition of rich pres
- 8:41Speaker 3: betting against other rich pres based on people they employ.
- 8:45Speaker 3: You know all about this chip. So normally the departure
- 8:50Speaker 3: date for a trip like this would have a little
- 8:52Speaker 3: bit of flexibility. But because there's now a big ass
- 8:55Speaker 3: bet on who gets there first, the Browns here they
- 8:58Speaker 3: need Neptune's car to get the hell out of here
- 9:00Speaker 3: right away. But as Captain Patten is preparing the ship
- 9:04Speaker 3: you know, for voyage number two here, he runs into
- 9:06Speaker 3: three problems. So problem number one, first mate breaks his leg,
- 9:11Speaker 3: So you got to replace the first mate.
- 9:13Speaker 1: How don't break his leg.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Do we know I'm getting to the ship ready, ship
- 9:16Speaker 3: stuff chat. I'm a man of the land.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I'm not a see I just want you to know
- 9:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna have questions.
- 9:21Speaker 3: That's great. I'm happy to answer all of your questions,
- 9:24Speaker 3: just like in real life, as patiently and as calmly
- 9:27Speaker 3: as I answer the questions of my own children. So
- 9:31Speaker 3: you need a new first mate. And sometimes if it's
- 9:34Speaker 3: a close call, you can just elevate the second mate,
- 9:37Speaker 3: like when Cleveland started Bailey Zappy instead of Dorian Thompson Robinson,
- 9:41Speaker 3: and it's like, who fucking cares. But as it turns out,
- 9:44Speaker 3: it is crucial that a first mate be able to
- 9:47Speaker 3: read stuff, and the second mate in this case, he
- 9:49Speaker 3: couldn't read for shit. So it was more like when
- 9:52Speaker 3: Kyle Allen was backing up Josh Allen, like it's totally
- 9:55Speaker 3: different classes here, so it won't work. But the Browns say, hey,
- 9:59Speaker 3: no problem, and they go out and they just grabbed
- 10:02Speaker 3: the first literate sailor. They can find a guy named
- 10:05Speaker 3: William Keeler and they say, hey, capt'n Patten, we found
- 10:08Speaker 3: your first mate. He can read and everything. So as
- 10:12Speaker 3: far as they were concerned, problem number one is now solved.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Speaking of betting on employees, we had a bet on
- 10:19Speaker 1: who would be the first person to ultimately take down
- 10:22Speaker 1: this show. I put my money on you. Simon put
- 10:25Speaker 1: it on Gifford, and I feel like Simon and about you,
- 10:28Speaker 1: but I feel like I'm gonna win this bet. You
- 10:29Speaker 1: want to weigh in on that.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I would have bet on that as well. I can't
- 10:33Speaker 2: believe you said I bet on Gifford. No, it's Guy Mitchell.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Have you seen this made social media presence? Oh my god.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Every time he tweets, I'm like, oh my god, is
- 10:41Speaker 2: this the one?
- 10:45Speaker 1: All right? Matt? Keep going all right?
- 10:48Speaker 3: So they grabbed this litterate sailor. They find a replacement
- 10:51Speaker 3: for the first mate, but Captain Pattin's he's feeling pretty sick.
- 10:55Speaker 3: He should probably rest for a day or two. And
- 10:57Speaker 3: his third problem is Mary Anne Wie, who's down nineteen.
- 11:01Speaker 3: She's pregnant, So we got an emergency fill in first mate.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Captain Patten's not feeling so great. His wife, she's pregnant.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Not to interrupt you again, this has the classic makings
- 11:11Speaker 1: of how to handicap right. Everyone would have thought, oh
- 11:15Speaker 1: my god, they did so well, on the first one,
- 11:18Speaker 1: they're amazing. We got to bet on them. In this
- 11:20Speaker 1: second one, no one's accounting for aggression. But also you
- 11:24Speaker 1: really got to be inside Neptune's car to understand the center.
- 11:29Speaker 1: You got to go to a backup center because the
- 11:31Speaker 1: first center is struggling and he's injured. So now you're
- 11:34Speaker 1: bringing them a backup and people are like, oh, it
- 11:35Speaker 1: doesn't really matter the first mate. It's not the most
- 11:38Speaker 1: important person. But it turns out first mate, like a center,
- 11:41Speaker 1: incredibly important. Right, So now you're at the third string center,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and that's terrible for the cohesiveness of the offensive line.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And you don't know that your quarterback is sick, like
- 11:52Speaker 1: that's not something that shows up on the injury report
- 11:54Speaker 1: for these teams and these boats. So now all of
- 11:57Speaker 1: a sudden, we got a lot of circumstances that you know,
- 12:00Speaker 1: if you're handicapping, this is starting to look pretty bad
- 12:02Speaker 1: for Nipson's car. Which start as a favorite.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Two classic issues that we run into all the time
- 12:07Speaker 3: are about to rear their ugly heads, jed volatility and
- 12:11Speaker 3: cluster injuries. So here we go. All right, so we
- 12:15Speaker 3: got these three problems, but the Browns as usual, have
- 12:18Speaker 3: the perfect solution. They say, rub some fucking dirt on
- 12:22Speaker 3: it. It's time for kickoff, and these sons of bitches set
- 12:25Speaker 3: sail for San Francisco on time, and again no Panama Canal.
- 12:29Speaker 3: So it's thirty thousand nautical miles away around the bottom
- 12:33Speaker 3: of the earth, packed to San Francisco. And immediately this
- 12:37Speaker 3: trip is a total fucking nightmare because one of the
- 12:39Speaker 3: first jobs of a first mate, in this case, this
- 12:42Speaker 3: villain William Keeler, you have to navigate when the captain
- 12:46Speaker 3: goes to sleep. But every time he takes over, he
- 12:49Speaker 3: keeps fucking it up and he puts them off course,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and he's finally so insubordinate that Captain Patton just goes,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you know what, and he just chains them up in
- 12:58Speaker 3: his room. He goes, you are totally I'm just going
- 13:01Speaker 3: to lock you away, and the second mate and third
- 13:03Speaker 3: mate are totally hapless. They end up they can't really
- 13:06Speaker 3: do anything. It's truly a Cleveland Brown's quarterback room situation.
- 13:10Speaker 3: It's a Boston two losers. So now Captain Patten's like, great, great,
- 13:14Speaker 3: I guess I can't go to sleep. He just stays
- 13:16Speaker 3: up NonStop, using his wife to help navigate, and it's
- 13:20Speaker 3: freezing cold, and they make it to the tip right
- 13:23Speaker 3: by Antarctica, and he's been awake for eight days straight
- 13:26Speaker 3: now and he just collapses. He's on a commission. The
- 13:30Speaker 3: Browns are so inept they essentially almost kill their coach.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Captain Patton has caught pneumonia, but as I mentioned, he
- 13:37Speaker 3: was already feeling pretty sick before they left, and that's
- 13:39Speaker 3: because he has tuberculosis meningitis, which has now left him
- 13:44Speaker 3: totally deaf and blind. He is totally cooked. So now
- 13:49Speaker 3: Mary Patton, the pregnant nineteen year old wife, she takes
- 13:53Speaker 3: control of the ship and the navigation, and she has
- 13:56Speaker 3: to take care of her essentially Comato's husband. And there
- 13:59Speaker 3: are icebergs and storms at all sorts of shit because
- 14:02Speaker 3: they're by again Antarctica, and they're only halfway there. They
- 14:06Speaker 3: couldn't be further away from both their homeport and their destination.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And there's still a ton of pressure on them because
- 14:13Speaker 3: there's a huge bet they have to win to beat
- 14:16Speaker 3: these three other ships. Because they were making great time chrise,
- 14:19Speaker 3: their captain wasn't sleeping. So they get around the horn
- 14:23Speaker 3: and they start heading north and immediately the first mate,
- 14:26Speaker 3: this guy William Keeler. He's locked up in his room.
- 14:29Speaker 3: He hears that the captain is totally cooked, so he
- 14:32Speaker 3: tries to stage a mutiny to get unlocked and take over.
- 14:35Speaker 3: But the crew's like, you know what, this lady Maryanne's
- 14:38Speaker 3: doing a good job. She can read stuff. She's not
- 14:41Speaker 3: trying to cause a mutiny. I think it's gonna be okay.
- 14:44Speaker 3: So she thinks, great, I've won the starting job. It's
- 14:46Speaker 3: gonna be okay. And then out of nowhere, Captain Patten
- 14:49Speaker 3: wakes up out of his coma right, he's got his
- 14:52Speaker 3: site back, but it still seems like he's totally scrambled
- 14:55Speaker 3: eggs because he benches her and orders Keeler unchained and
- 14:59Speaker 3: he can take over. And Keeller immediately tells Mary Anne, Hey, great,
- 15:03Speaker 3: now you can go play nurse. I'm gonna take over
- 15:06Speaker 3: within two days. She's looking out the window and she's
- 15:09Speaker 3: convinced we're definitely going off course. He wouldn't let her,
- 15:13Speaker 3: you know, have access to any of any of the
- 15:15Speaker 3: navigation stuff. And again, I'm a man of the land.
- 15:18Speaker 3: I don't know like how one can make one's own compass,
- 15:21Speaker 3: but she does. She figures it out and she proves
- 15:23Speaker 3: it to the scrambled eggs. Captain Hey, we're headed in
- 15:25Speaker 3: the wrong direction and it works. He commands her back
- 15:29Speaker 3: in charge. Marian gets the starting job back in place,
- 15:33Speaker 3: Keeler gets locked up again, and then Captain Patten slips
- 15:36Speaker 3: back into a coma. He's deaf and blind. We won't
- 15:39Speaker 3: hear from him again. But here's the best part. Are
- 15:42Speaker 3: you ready? As it turns out, mutiny Boy William Keeler
- 15:47Speaker 3: the last minute replacement. He wasn't simply an incompetent asshole
- 15:51Speaker 3: Chad and Simon. He was throwing the fight he'd bet
- 15:55Speaker 3: he'd bet on the other ship. He was intentionally fucking
- 15:59Speaker 3: with Neptune's car, his own vessel because he was point
- 16:02Speaker 3: shaving on the high seas.
- 16:04Speaker 1: That is crazy.
- 16:06Speaker 3: So now Marianne is incredibly pissed, just like my wife
- 16:11Speaker 3: was the entire time. She was six months pregnant and
- 16:13Speaker 3: they just start hauling ass north. She's totally exhausted. She
- 16:17Speaker 3: ends up wearing the same clothes for two months straight.
- 16:20Speaker 3: And when she finally steers them into San Francisco Bay,
- 16:23Speaker 3: mutiny Boy William Keeler gets a crew man to unchain
- 16:26Speaker 3: him and he slips out and he jumps overboard and
- 16:29Speaker 3: swims away, never to be heard from again. And in
- 16:32Speaker 3: the most Cleveland Browns ending of this entire thing, when
- 16:35Speaker 3: they finally arrive in port after surviving these unimaginable hardships,
- 16:40Speaker 3: the terrible weather, the brutal conditions, the blind deaf captain,
- 16:43Speaker 3: the nautical point shaving, they get off the ship and
- 16:46Speaker 3: they go, hey, hey, do we win? Do we beat
- 16:49Speaker 3: the other four ships? They finished second Chad, their owners
- 16:53Speaker 3: lose their bat on a truly terrible beat, and lucky
- 16:57Speaker 3: for them, lucky for the Browns, they get to refuse
- 17:00Speaker 3: to pay Captain Patten the five thousand dollars they hel
- 17:02Speaker 3: him because he was basically dead half the time, and
- 17:05Speaker 3: they don't have to pay Mary Patten anything because she
- 17:07Speaker 3: doesn't even work for him. So, like I said, the
- 17:10Speaker 3: perfect ending for a Cleveland Browns allegory. And that is
- 17:13Speaker 3: the story of Neptune's car Maryann Patten, the first woman
- 17:18Speaker 3: to command an American ship, and the hero of an
- 17:21Speaker 3: epic historical bad beat.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I can't believe that. It's a beautiful story and excellent
- 17:28Speaker 1: work researching it. I know it was a labor of
- 17:30Speaker 1: love for you. I'm just so disappointed that there were
- 17:35Speaker 1: nefarious deeds taking place with related to gambling in the
- 17:41Speaker 1: nineteenth century. Yeah, when it came to ship captaining, those
- 17:45Speaker 1: people all seemed pretty much and I say this pun
- 17:49Speaker 1: intended above board?
- 17:51Speaker 3: Wow did you when did you think of that? Right
- 17:53Speaker 3: after I said nefarious? Incredible, well done to put a
- 17:58Speaker 3: bow on this. What happens to them? Afterwards? Marianne and
- 18:02Speaker 3: Captain Patten returned to Boston finally put him in an asylum.
- 18:06Speaker 3: He dies shortly thereafter. She gives birth successfully, and then
- 18:10Speaker 3: she also gets sick and dies four years later at
- 18:12Speaker 3: the age of twenty four. And now the hospital at
- 18:15Speaker 3: the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kingsport, New York is
- 18:19Speaker 3: named after her. And that's the end of that.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Wow, how did you find this story?
- 18:24Speaker 3: Ched? I was able to do exhaustive research. I've always
- 18:27Speaker 3: got my ears to the gambling streets. Those ears stretch
- 18:31Speaker 3: back hundreds of years.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Ched.
- 18:33Speaker 3: But one of the best sources for many gambling stories,
- 18:36Speaker 3: which I absolutely love, which I will quote many times from,
- 18:40Speaker 3: is Roll the Bones The History of Gambling, an absolutely
- 18:44Speaker 3: incredible book by David G. Schwartz. This is a totally
- 18:49Speaker 3: unpaid plug. I've read this book four times. It's not
- 18:51Speaker 3: a new book, but Roll the Bones. If you know
- 18:53Speaker 3: someone is that is literate, like a good first mate,
- 18:56Speaker 3: and likes gambling, it's a great book.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I highly recommend that Matt. I know David Schwartz. I
- 19:03Speaker 1: know Roll the Bones because I've interviewed David Schwartz many,
- 19:09Speaker 1: many times. He's a sort of gambling historian and professor
- 19:14Speaker 1: at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Oh, I've read the book. Check at Chad. I'm glad
- 19:19Speaker 3: that you too have such a cozy relationship.

- 21:20Speaker 1: That's Tommy John dot com slash favorites. All right, Matt,
- 21:27Speaker 1: do we have your second story?
- 21:29Speaker 3: Yes, this is the story of Andrew Jackson, a breathed
- 21:34Speaker 3: glimpse into one of America's most maniac gambling presidents. So
- 21:40Speaker 3: in this story, I'm going to be using some dollar figures,
- 21:44Speaker 3: and instead of just saying a number like fifteen hundred dollars,
- 21:47Speaker 3: I'm just gonna say the amount of money in today's money,
- 21:50Speaker 3: so that we can just be kind of singing off
- 21:52Speaker 3: the same sheet of music here. So just kind of
- 21:54Speaker 3: keep that in mind, all right. So, in the early
- 21:57Speaker 3: eighteen hundreds, America was rapidly banding westward, and it was
- 22:01Speaker 3: a time of a great excitement on the American frontier
- 22:05Speaker 3: because I can't overstate how unbelievably boring life on the
- 22:09Speaker 3: frontier really was. I can totally see why if you're,
- 22:13Speaker 3: you know, just trying to chop a tree down or whatever,
- 22:15Speaker 3: you know, skin a beaver, playing cards would be just
- 22:18Speaker 3: about the most exciting thing in the whole world.
- 22:20Speaker 1: I feel like anybody listening to this podcast has a
- 22:22Speaker 1: very clear idea of what that journey was like.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Everyone here is can really picture that. So politicians of
- 22:29Speaker 3: that era, especially frontier politicians, they loved to gamble. Many
- 22:33Speaker 3: of them were incredibly skilled players, for example Henry Clay
- 22:36Speaker 3: of Kentucky, Daniel Webster of Massachusetts. These guys were real
- 22:41Speaker 3: card sharks. But this story is going to focus on
- 22:43Speaker 3: their great political adversary in one of America's all time
- 22:47Speaker 3: sons of bitches, Old Hickory himself, Andrew Jackson of Tennessee.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Jackson loved the Ponies because he was an incredibly skillful writer.
- 22:57Speaker 3: And why was he skillful? Well, he was born in
- 23:00Speaker 3: seventeen sixty seven to Scott's Irish parents. And if you
- 23:04Speaker 3: know anything about the Scots or the Irish, you know
- 23:06Speaker 3: they hate the English, isn't that right? Simon facts When
- 23:11Speaker 3: young Andrew Jackson was a kid with a burning hatred
- 23:14Speaker 3: for the English he'd received from his parents. He served
- 23:17Speaker 3: as a messenger for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War,
- 23:21Speaker 3: and he was dope at it because it required a
- 23:24Speaker 3: lot of bravery, but the kind of bravery where you
- 23:26Speaker 3: don't consider kind of personal consequences, exactly like being a gambler.
- 23:31Speaker 3: You also have to be a great writer, and Jackson
- 23:34Speaker 3: was indeed a great writer. He ended up getting captured
- 23:36Speaker 3: and imprisoned by the British at the age of twelve. Truly,
- 23:39Speaker 3: ride or Die literally and spoiler alert, America wins the
- 23:43Speaker 3: Revolutionary War, and by the time Jackson was thirty eight
- 23:47Speaker 3: years old, he was a major general in the Tennessee Militia.
- 23:50Speaker 3: He was a US representative. He'd already gotten rich and
- 23:53Speaker 3: then almost bankrupt, and rich again and bankrupt again. But
- 23:56Speaker 3: by the time Tennessee gained statehood he was a pretty
- 23:59Speaker 3: big deal. He already owned several race horses, and one
- 24:03Speaker 3: that he particularly loved was a horse called Indian Queen,
- 24:07Speaker 3: and Jackson challenged his neighbor, a guy with the incredible
- 24:11Speaker 3: name of Lazarus Cotton, and Lazarus Cotton owned greyhound the
- 24:15Speaker 3: fastest horse in the South, and they had a big
- 24:18Speaker 3: race with multiple heats, and Greyhound absolutely whips Indian Queen's
- 24:23Speaker 3: ass and Jackson is deeply embarrassed. So Jackson is determined
- 24:28Speaker 3: to be Greyhound and he knows a horse that can
- 24:31Speaker 3: do it. The horse is called Truxton, and that presents
- 24:34Speaker 3: two problems. The first is obviously that he doesn't own Truxton,
- 24:38Speaker 3: and the second problem is that Truxton had just raced
- 24:41Speaker 3: Greyhound and had lost. But luckily, problem number two kind
- 24:44Speaker 3: of solves problem number one because the loss of Truxton
- 24:48Speaker 3: to Greyhound had basically bankrupted his owner. So Andrew Jackson
- 24:51Speaker 3: slides up and he offers this guy a hell of
- 24:54Speaker 3: a deal. He says, listen, bro, if you let me
- 24:57Speaker 3: borrow Truxton, I will pay off debts, I'll get you
- 25:00Speaker 3: out of your jam, and I'm gonna train Truxton to
- 25:03Speaker 3: run a big race. And if he wins that race,
- 25:06Speaker 3: dex ball, I get to buy Truckston for forty grand
- 25:09Speaker 3: and I'll give you five other horses. And the guy says,
- 25:12Speaker 3: all right, you said up a bit, you got yourself
- 25:14Speaker 3: a deal. So now Andrew Jackson has his dream horse,
- 25:17Speaker 3: trucks him, and he reaches out to his neighbor, Lazarus
- 25:21Speaker 3: Cotton again and he says, let's run a back. Baby says,
- 25:24Speaker 3: I just bought Truxton, the one year horse just beat.
- 25:27Speaker 3: But there's a new trainer in town. That's me. So he,
- 25:31Speaker 3: Jackson and Coddon agree to a race. But Jackson says,
- 25:34Speaker 3: this time, I'm all in, and I remember he just
- 25:36Speaker 3: paid off this guy's debts. It's a little strapped for cash.
- 25:39Speaker 3: So like, what is all in for a thirty eight
- 25:42Speaker 3: year old Andrew Jackson? What's that look like? Well, in
- 25:44Speaker 3: like a cash and prizes sense, like in a price
- 25:47Speaker 3: is right showcase showdown value? It was one hundred and
- 25:51Speaker 3: forty thousand dollars today's money. One hundred thousand of that
- 25:55Speaker 3: was in cash and another forty thousand in Jackson's clothes.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Valued that another forty grand. Wow, talk about a closed horse,
- 26:04Speaker 3: good Boomer vernacular. Incredible.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Just to do what I can do, what I can
- 26:09Speaker 1: to contribute.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Here, Absolutely huge wager. He's betting the closed off his
- 26:13Speaker 3: back and back. Then, Chad, no odds, this is just
- 26:17Speaker 3: straight up He's just gonna bet him a one hundred
- 26:19Speaker 3: and forty grand straight up great baller. Now it's set,
- 26:24Speaker 3: Jackson has to start training truckst and he does so
- 26:26Speaker 3: like an absolute savage. He tells people he's gonna run
- 26:29Speaker 3: the horse incredibly hard, to instill a will to win
- 26:33Speaker 3: in this animal, just like classic maniac stuff. And everyone thinks, Okay,
- 26:38Speaker 3: Jackson's killing this horse. There's no way he's gonna win
- 26:40Speaker 3: this race. The horse already fucking lost to Greyhound already.
- 26:44Speaker 3: So when race day comes to Nashville, everybody rolls up.
- 26:48Speaker 3: It's an unbelievably exciting enterprise here in an incredibly boring
- 26:53Speaker 3: place and incredibly boring part of American history. So this
- 26:56Speaker 3: is the most exciting thing that's like ever happened ever.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Report from this race says that gambling there is absolutely
- 27:02Speaker 3: out of control. There's a congressman in attendance who says
- 27:06Speaker 3: multiple people are betting their entire properties, like six hundred
- 27:09Speaker 3: plus acre properties. People are going full Jackson. They're betting
- 27:13Speaker 3: all their clothes. You watch a guy take off his
- 27:15Speaker 3: riding gloves and just bet the guy next to him,
- 27:18Speaker 3: Like everybody has got gambling fever for this giant race.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Even the jockey that Jackson hires, he bets his entire
- 27:26Speaker 3: net worth on himself. He even uses horses he doesn't
- 27:29Speaker 3: even own to make more bets. And then finally Chad,
- 27:32Speaker 3: they're gonna do the race. It's the eighteen to oh
- 27:35Speaker 3: five version of Muhammad Ali versus Joe Fraser. It's Truxton
- 27:39Speaker 3: Greyhound two. This one's for all the clothes and Truxton
- 27:46Speaker 3: absolutely crushes Greyhound, huge win. Jackson wins a shitload of money.
- 27:52Speaker 3: The old owner of Truxton he gets his prize money.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Both men are totally bailed out. The jockey doubles his
- 27:59Speaker 3: net worth. Believable. Andrew Jackson just a total gambling maniac.
- 28:03Speaker 3: And you could kind of picture the equivalent of a
- 28:05Speaker 3: guy like this today, fun little bonus nugget. Twenty years
- 28:10Speaker 3: after this race, Andrew Jackson runs for president and he's
- 28:14Speaker 3: running against John Quincy Adams. It's a classic matchup. You
- 28:18Speaker 3: got a Southern maniac versus a pedigreed Northeastern fancy boy.
- 28:24Speaker 3: I wonder who you would be. And Jackson wins the
- 28:28Speaker 3: popular vote, but it's too close to call, so the
- 28:30Speaker 3: election goes to the House of Representatives and John Quincy
- 28:33Speaker 3: Adams takes the White House. Jackson's furious about it, and
- 28:37Speaker 3: he blames his old adversary, the card shark Henry Clay.
- 28:40Speaker 3: He thinks they broke it, some kind of crooked deal.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Stop the steal. All very familiar stuff does. But during
- 28:47Speaker 3: the election, Jackson had painted John Quincy Adams as this
- 28:51Speaker 3: pansy boy, right, this pansy puritan. But after entering the
- 28:54Speaker 3: White House, John Quincy Adams is like, oh shit, I'm
- 28:57Speaker 3: gonna have to talk to like a lot of foreign dignitaries.
- 28:59Speaker 3: I gotta find something for them to do. They all
- 29:01Speaker 3: love billiards, Europeans love playing pool. So Adams gets an
- 29:05Speaker 3: old pool table and he has it refurbished, and he
- 29:08Speaker 3: buys the sticks and the balls and all that shit,
- 29:10Speaker 3: like some you know, midwestern dad redoing his reck room,
- 29:13Speaker 3: except it's the White House. When Andrew Jackson, who just
- 29:16Speaker 3: lost the election to him, he hears about this, He's like,
- 29:19Speaker 3: oh my god, yes, I'm gonna fucking bury this guy
- 29:23Speaker 3: for this, and he manufactures an entire scandal, saying he
- 29:27Speaker 3: can't believe the president would use tax money for quote,
- 29:31Speaker 3: gaming tables and gambling equipment, and says betting inside the
- 29:35Speaker 3: White House would quote shock and alarm the religious and
- 29:39Speaker 3: moral part of this country, and John Quincy Adams is like, bro,
- 29:43Speaker 3: what the fuck are you talking about? I bought the
- 29:45Speaker 3: table with my own money and I'm not even using
- 29:47Speaker 3: it to bet. It's just like bullshit with ambassadors. And
- 29:51Speaker 3: obviously they call out that Jackson is a known enormous
- 29:54Speaker 3: maniac gambler and loves betting on cards and horses and
- 29:58Speaker 3: cock fights and anything else. Jackson had challenged the dude
- 30:02Speaker 3: to a duel over a canceled horse race. He got
- 30:05Speaker 3: shot in the chest in that duel and still killed
- 30:07Speaker 3: the other guy. Like not a kind of guy you're
- 30:09Speaker 3: gonna take a lot of shit about gambling from. But
- 30:12Speaker 3: it didn't matter. Scandal totally works. The next election is
- 30:15Speaker 3: a rematch Adams Jackson's full of dirty tricks and all
- 30:19Speaker 3: sorts of bullshit, but just like Truxton Greyhound two, this
- 30:23Speaker 3: one's for all the clothes. Jackson, as a maniac, beats
- 30:26Speaker 3: Adams wins the presidency, and to end the story, when
- 30:30Speaker 3: Jackson goes to DC, he immediately strong arms Congress. He
- 30:34Speaker 3: makes them renovate the White House stables so he can
- 30:37Speaker 3: bring all of his famous horses with him, And that
- 30:41Speaker 3: is just a glimpse into the Life a President Andrew Jackson,
- 30:45Speaker 3: American gambling psychopath.
- 30:47Speaker 1: What do you think of that one? Simon?
- 30:48Speaker 2: Honestly, not shocking, because if you do go through American history,
- 30:52Speaker 2: all these presidents have had pretty wild lives, right, And
- 30:56Speaker 2: I didn't know all that about him and horse racing.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Though I knew he was a gambler, I never knew
- 30:59Speaker 2: was all horse and so pretty cool, pretty cool story.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Honestly, I gotta say I like the second one better.
- 31:05Speaker 1: The second one, well, I had no idea. Yeah, a
- 31:08Speaker 1: little more connected to the gambling, but I had no
- 31:11Speaker 1: idea that he made that much money from bedding horses
- 31:16Speaker 1: and that he was that much of an accomplished writer.
- 31:19Speaker 1: That's actually incredibly cool? Is that? Also from David Schwartz's
