- 0:00Speaker 1: There is a bowl game going on right now, The
- 0:04Speaker 1: famous Idaho Potato Bowl is going on in Boise, Idaho
- 0:09Speaker 1: right now on the blue turf, the smurf turf there
- 0:12Speaker 1: Sonny there in Boise, and Fresno State is leading Northern
- 0:16Speaker 1: Illinois thirteen to three waning seconds of the first half
- 0:21Speaker 1: and that one is Presno State lead. Congratulations to UTSA.
- 0:25Speaker 1: The Roadrunners finished their season on an up note. It
- 0:29Speaker 1: did so in a big way as they went to
- 0:33Speaker 1: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and won the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
- 0:36Speaker 1: They won that one handily over the team at home,
- 0:42Speaker 1: the host school playing Coastal Carolina. They're on their home
- 0:46Speaker 1: field and they simply went right about their business and
- 0:52Speaker 1: blew them out this afternoon. So congratulations to the to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Roadrunners, to uts who won forty four to fifteen.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And by virtue of the win, they finished with a
- 1:07Speaker 1: winning record. And so Jeff Trailer as a head coach
- 1:14Speaker 1: has never ever, ever had a losing season ever, going
- 1:18Speaker 1: back to his high school days when he was building
- 1:20Speaker 1: up the program at Gilmer and then at UTSA, has
- 1:24Speaker 1: never had a losing record and it hasn't happened yet.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Olwen McCallen for two hundred and fifty four yards. UTSA
- 1:32Speaker 1: scored twenty one second quarter, point six and third. They
- 1:34Speaker 1: were up twenty seven to nothing going in the fourth quarter,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and they won forty four to fifteen. So congrats to
- 1:38Speaker 1: the road Runners. Finished on an up notes for that one,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and that's obviously a school from the state of Texas
- 1:47Speaker 1: winning a bowl game, so it was good, good for
- 1:49Speaker 1: UTSA to finish that on a upnil. You know. One
- 1:52Speaker 1: of the weird things about that this was I'm not
- 1:55Speaker 1: going to necessarily say it was an unintended consequence, but
- 2:01Speaker 1: it is something I think that not too many folks
- 2:05Speaker 1: had given a great deal of thought to when the
- 2:09Speaker 1: construction of this twelve teen college football playoff was coming
- 2:12Speaker 1: into form. Simple water here, and what a lot of
- 2:21Speaker 1: folks really hadn't thought that much about was the fact
- 2:26Speaker 1: that for those teams who make the twelve team playoff
- 2:34Speaker 1: but don't get a first round by, they don't receive
- 2:36Speaker 1: a first round by. So that is obviously seeds five
- 2:41Speaker 1: through twelve at Texas five, the twelve seed Clemson, the
- 2:45Speaker 1: sixth seed, Penn State, the eleven or the succeed Penn State,
- 2:53Speaker 1: the eleven seed SMU the seven to ten matchup. In
- 2:59Speaker 1: the eight nine matchup as well, the seven to ten
- 3:02Speaker 1: matchup was Notre Dame, Indiana. The eight nine matchup was Tennessee,
- 3:07Speaker 1: Ohio State. In all those cases, obviously the lower seeded
- 3:12Speaker 1: teams doing the traveling to the road team, and on
- 3:16Speaker 1: all four occasions the home team won. Friday night in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the seven to ten matchup Notre Dame and Home beat Indiana.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Saturday in the six verses eleven matchup, Penn State beat
- 3:30Speaker 1: beat SMU and Sumu. May it just couldn't overcome the
- 3:33Speaker 1: gigantic amount of mistakes early two pick sixes and there
- 3:36Speaker 1: was another interception, and then they just they also didn't
- 3:39Speaker 1: convert a fourth down when they had an opportunity early
- 3:41Speaker 1: before the pick six has happened. But so they won.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And then the eight nine matchup, Ohio State just just
- 3:47Speaker 1: really whacked Tennessee pretty good on a cold night in
- 3:50Speaker 1: Columbus on Saturday night. And of course Texas went over Clemson.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And I think Roger and Wallace and I were talking
- 3:58Speaker 1: about this while we were during a break to start
- 4:02Speaker 1: our locker room interviews, and he said, you know, it's
- 4:05Speaker 1: kind of a bumber, really for teams like Clemson and
- 4:10Speaker 1: Indiana and well became Tennessee later. That game was never
- 4:16Speaker 1: at the time, but at Tennessee and SMU that the
- 4:20Speaker 1: season just abruptly ended. You know, these were teams that
- 4:24Speaker 1: had double digit wins, had great seasons, but no quote
- 4:30Speaker 1: unquote bowl game reward. Yes, you want to be in
- 4:32Speaker 1: the playoff, and they went into the playoff, but if
- 4:34Speaker 1: you lose in that first playoff game, you're done because
- 4:38Speaker 1: it's done on a campus site. Now this week, of
- 4:43Speaker 1: the eight remaining schools, they're playing in actual bowl games,
- 4:46Speaker 1: so they do get the bowl experience and that you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: the players get the bowl gifts and all the other
- 4:51Speaker 1: kind of stuff and the other things that happened, so
- 4:52Speaker 1: they actually get a bowl experience, even even within the
- 4:58Speaker 1: playoff structure. And that was one of the things that
- 5:00Speaker 1: thing that folks thought really needed to happen. If you
- 5:02Speaker 1: were going to have a playoff, make sure that the
- 5:06Speaker 1: bowls get involved with it as well. And this is
- 5:09Speaker 1: another reason why I'm an advocate of expanding at the sixteen.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Although I love the on campus site thing. That on
- 5:16Speaker 1: campus site experience was good, but it gives more teams
- 5:19Speaker 1: an opportunity to advance than to the quarterfinals and then
- 5:23Speaker 1: have a chance to advance through the system and get
- 5:30Speaker 1: a bowl experience. Texas players will get a bowl experience
- 5:33Speaker 1: this week with the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, and they
- 5:35Speaker 1: now will have played in every one of what's the
- 5:40Speaker 1: new year six college balls. Now, they haven't played in
- 5:42Speaker 1: the Orange Bowl since January of sixty five, but they
- 5:44Speaker 1: have played in the Orange Bowl before and one when
- 5:47Speaker 1: they've been in the Range Bowl, obviously, in the Sugar Bowl,
- 5:49Speaker 1: the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and now they get
- 5:51Speaker 1: to play in the Chick fil A Peach Bowl. All Right,
- 5:54Speaker 1: Coming up, we're gonna hear from the two head coaches
- 5:56Speaker 1: of the teams who are involved with this bowl game.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It was a mediasm just a little while ago with
- 6:04Speaker 1: Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian, and also with Kenny Dillingham,
- 6:09Speaker 1: the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils, So
- 6:11Speaker 1: we'll hear from both of those head coaches. Also coming
- 6:14Speaker 1: up next hour one final seasonal visit with Greg Tapper,
- 6:18Speaker 1: managing enter of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, to look
- 6:21Speaker 1: at college football in Texas, and I'm looking back at
- 6:23Speaker 1: the state championship games. It's all coming up Hour number
- 6:26Speaker 1: two on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
