Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Trump-Backed Rep. Andy Ogles LOSES primary
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Two term Republican Congressman Andy Ogles, a member of the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Conservative Freedom Caucus who had the backing of President Trump,
- 0:07Speaker 1: lost his primary race to Charlie Hatcher, a former state
- 0:11Speaker 1: agriculture commissioner. Ogles was running in a new congressional district
- 0:15Speaker 1: after Republicans redrew state lines earlier this year. Ali Andy
- 0:20Speaker 1: Ogles is a guy who, let's just say, always looked
- 0:24Speaker 1: at a situation and wondered, what's the worst possible thing
- 0:27Speaker 1: I could say about this complete fealty to President Trump
- 0:31Speaker 1: and every statement he ever made. He said, Muslims don't
- 0:34Speaker 1: belong in America, homosexuality has no place in America. We
- 0:38Speaker 1: can go down the list, continue to deny that the
- 0:40Speaker 1: twenty twenty election was legitimate. There's so much there, and
- 0:44Speaker 1: it appears like many of his Republican colleagues voters in
- 0:48Speaker 1: Tennessee had seen enough.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, wondered what's the worst thing you could say in
- 0:52Speaker 2: this situation, and likely said the thing. One of the
- 0:55Speaker 2: most MAGA aligned members in this House Republican conference and
- 1:00Speaker 2: was backed by the President is the same person, in
- 1:03Speaker 2: addition to all the controversial things that you just mentioned,
- 1:06Speaker 2: is the person who tried to sponsor an amendment or
- 1:08Speaker 2: rather a resolution that would allow the president to run
- 1:12Speaker 2: for a third term. I mean, it does not get
- 1:14Speaker 2: more MAGA and more Freedom Caucus than Andy Ogles. And
- 1:17Speaker 2: yet in this new district that was redrawn at the
- 1:20Speaker 2: behest of Republicans lost his primary And I think it's
- 1:24Speaker 2: notable when you consider and at the end of primary
- 1:26Speaker 2: season we'll be able to take a more holistic look
- 1:28Speaker 2: of this of what the impact of being MAGA in
- 1:33Speaker 2: the new maps looks like. But also being MAGA in
- 1:35Speaker 2: a period of time where Trump is and he won't
- 1:38Speaker 2: want to hear this, and Republicans might not want to
- 1:40Speaker 2: hear this either. He will be a lame duck. And
- 1:42Speaker 2: so what does the party do as it tries to
- 1:45Speaker 2: navigate that post Trump period even as he is still
- 1:49Speaker 2: in the Oval office? And so I think this is
- 1:51Speaker 2: yet another reminder of the fact that there is a
- 1:53Speaker 2: pretty heavy strain of resentment towards people currently serving in Washington.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Something we track on the Democratic sides, something we track
- 2:00Speaker 2: on the Republican side as well. This could be an
- 2:03Speaker 2: outcome of that. In addition to the kind of lawmaker
- 2:06Speaker 2: and elected official that Ogles has been on the public stage.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And the Trump endorsement is not automatically when you were raised,
- 2:13Speaker 1: as we saw in Tennessee last night. Meanwhile, two Republican
- 2:16Speaker 1: mayors from deep red areas of Georgia are crossing party
- 2:20Speaker 1: lines to endorse Democratic Senator John Offsoff. The mayors told
- 2:24Speaker 1: the Atlanta Journal Constitution they decided to back offs Off
- 2:27Speaker 1: in his Senate race because his work in their communities
- 2:31Speaker 1: and push to increase federal resources outweighs any partisan loyalties
- 2:35Speaker 1: they have. Imagine that both mayors represent some of the
- 2:38Speaker 1: most conservative parts of Georgia. President Trump won both areas
- 2:42Speaker 1: by double digits in twenty twenty four. Meanwhile, in Ohio,
- 2:46Speaker 1: voters there expressing frustration with rising gas and energy prices
- 2:51Speaker 1: driven up by the president's war in Iran. MS Now
- 2:55Speaker 1: reporter Alex Tabitt spoke with some Trump voters in the
- 2:58Speaker 1: northeastern part of Ohio. Is this how you expected the
- 3:02Speaker 1: second Trump term to go?
- 3:04Speaker 3: No, not at all. I hoped it was going to
- 3:07Speaker 3: be so much better.
- 3:08Speaker 2: He also promised no new foreign wars.
- 3:10Speaker 4: We're obviously in this war in Iran, which is why
- 3:12Speaker 4: we're seeing the grass prices so high.
- 3:15Speaker 1: What do you make of the president not keeping those
- 3:18Speaker 1: campaign promises.
- 3:20Speaker 2: He just told us what we wanted to hear to
- 3:22Speaker 2: vote him back in.
- 3:22Speaker 5: What would your message be to him about the economy
- 3:25Speaker 5: right now, about prices, about day to day life.
- 3:29Speaker 3: I would tell him, you promised us you would lower prices,
- 3:33Speaker 3: bring back what it used to be. I was hoping
- 3:36Speaker 3: that gas was going to go down so I could
- 3:40Speaker 3: do something. You know, you can't do anything with gas prices,
- 3:47Speaker 3: and you just can't. You can't afford to breathe at
- 3:51Speaker 3: this point?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Are you regretting your vote right now?
- 3:55Speaker 1: I have that past two years?
- 3:56Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 3:56Speaker 5: I have.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I'm actually not even voting the next time. Here a
- 4:01Speaker 1: mother at a gas pump saying he can't afford to
- 4:03Speaker 1: breathe anymore. Joining the conversation, Chief White House correspondent for
- 4:07Speaker 1: The New York Times, Peter Baker, and ms NOW national
- 4:10Speaker 1: affairs analyst John Howman. He's partner in chief Political Calmness
- 4:13Speaker 1: at Puck Guy's. Good morning, Peter. Let me start with you.
- 4:16Speaker 1: This is a president The White House tries to put
- 4:19Speaker 1: him out there at an event in Las Vegas to
- 4:21Speaker 1: talk about affordability, trying to emphasize some of the popular
- 4:24Speaker 1: items like no tax on tips and things like that.
- 4:27Speaker 1: But as always, that event just turns into a meandering
- 4:31Speaker 1: campaign rally talking about his grievances, his enemies, and all
- 4:35Speaker 1: of the rest of it. This is not a president
- 4:37Speaker 1: who's ever going to be laser focused on affordability, because
- 4:41Speaker 1: until the war with Iran comes to some kind of
- 4:44Speaker 1: a conclusion, it feels pretty intractable for him, does it not.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it does. Look Affordability, he says, is
- 4:51Speaker 5: a hoax. It's a made up democratic hoax, he likes
- 4:55Speaker 5: to say. But look, yeah, I think the thinking in
- 4:56Speaker 5: the White House is they recognize obviously that he he
- 5:00Speaker 5: is down in the polls. That's a drag on the ticket.
- 5:03Speaker 5: He told our friends at take Sureman a punch bowl
- 5:06Speaker 5: that you know, him not being on the ticket this year,
- 5:09Speaker 5: not being on the ballot this year, will hurt other Republicans.
- 5:13Speaker 5: But the theory of the case is if he can
- 5:15Speaker 5: get some sort of resolution of the Iran war, it
- 5:18Speaker 5: almost didn't matter what. As long as he can say
- 5:20Speaker 5: it's over and gas prices start to head back down,
- 5:22Speaker 5: that people will think a little bit more kindly toward him.
- 5:26Speaker 5: They'll be more willing to give them a second chance.
- 5:28Speaker 5: But the voter you just showed who says I voted
- 5:32Speaker 5: for him, I regret my vote, and I'm not going
- 5:33Speaker 5: to vote this year. That's the real worry for Republicans.
- 5:36Speaker 5: It's not that they think that Trump voters are going
- 5:38Speaker 5: to suddenly become you know, Democrats or vote for you know,
- 5:42Speaker 5: I'll say it and Michigan. They're just not going to
- 5:44Speaker 5: show up, right, They're not going to be show up
- 5:46Speaker 5: because they're upset about what's happened. They're not going to
- 5:49Speaker 5: show up because Trump excites them, but maybe the rest
- 5:52Speaker 5: of the party doesn't. That's the real worry is finding
- 5:55Speaker 5: a way to motivate them. And that's why they're going
- 5:57Speaker 5: to talk a lot about socialism and communist them and
- 6:00Speaker 5: so forth, in order to try to give MAGA voters
- 6:03Speaker 5: a reason to turn out.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Yeah, John Howman, let's explore that a little further. I mean,
- 6:08Speaker 4: they are they're attacking the usual cultural war issues. They
- 6:11Speaker 4: are indeed trying to create a red scare in mixing
- 6:16Speaker 4: up the terms communism and socialism. But the fundamentals are
- 6:20Speaker 4: these elections, so in midterms in particular, are so often
- 6:23Speaker 4: decided on on the economy, and it's not just that
- 6:27Speaker 4: things haven't gotten better. Voters look at the White House
- 6:30Speaker 4: and they see no effort being made from the President
- 6:33Speaker 4: to either understand how they feel or to try to
- 6:37Speaker 4: fix it. And in fact, his signature moves the Iran
- 6:40Speaker 4: War tariffs is to name two, have only made their
- 6:43Speaker 4: lives more expensive.
- 6:46Speaker 6: Yeah, you can't overstate the importance of the point that
- 6:49Speaker 6: Peter just made a second ago about this is. You know,
- 6:52Speaker 6: if you want to talk to the language of strategists
- 6:53Speaker 6: and polsters, you talk about enthusiasm and the enthusiasm gap.
- 6:56Speaker 6: You look at what just to take the most recent example,
- 7:00Speaker 6: what happened in those Michigan primaries on Tuesday where about
- 7:04Speaker 6: a million Republicans voted and about a million and a
- 7:07Speaker 6: half Democrats voted. That's, guys, that's my I'm I'm not
- 7:11Speaker 6: like a mathematician, but that's that's a very wide gap
- 7:15Speaker 6: between Democrats who wanted to get out and send cast
- 7:18Speaker 6: to vote and Republicans who did. And that has been
- 7:21Speaker 6: the part of the pattern that we've seen over the
- 7:23Speaker 6: last eighteen months where Democrats turn out off the charts,
- 7:27Speaker 6: Republicans turnout poor week and it's it's August. You know,
- 7:33Speaker 6: the notion that and I understand Peter's reporting about what
- 7:37Speaker 6: the theory of the cases in the White House is correct,
- 7:39Speaker 6: but it's a delusional theory. You could end, you could
- 7:42Speaker 6: open the straight up from moves and end the Iran
- 7:43Speaker 6: war today, and gas prices are not gonna They will
- 7:49Speaker 6: maybe go down on tiny a little bit. But the
- 7:51Speaker 6: problem with inflation across the board, we have this global
- 7:55Speaker 6: supply chain. It's going to take months for the disruptions
- 7:58Speaker 6: from the war to work through the system. So you're
- 8:00Speaker 6: going to be looking overall at high prices all the
- 8:02Speaker 6: way through to November. There's not going to there's no
- 8:03Speaker 6: going to turn that back. And I think that that
- 8:06Speaker 6: in combination with what you heard in that in that
- 8:08Speaker 6: piece from our reporter there, which is those voices are
- 8:13Speaker 6: not unrepresentative what you can hear in all the fifty
- 8:16Speaker 6: states from from from the vast majority of voters, which
- 8:19Speaker 6: is the economy is terrible. They understand it's terrible. And
- 8:22Speaker 6: when Donald Trump gets up and pretends and says that
- 8:24Speaker 6: he's an A plus plus plus plus plus plus it's
- 8:26Speaker 6: the greatest economy in the history of the world, they
- 8:29Speaker 6: can see for themselves and feel in their lives how
- 8:32Speaker 6: totally out of touch and completely unmotivated. He is to
- 8:37Speaker 6: try to help them, and that is the kiss of
- 8:39Speaker 6: death politically for the president of the president's party, which
- 8:43Speaker 6: has no independent economic agenda aside from Trump's, and he
- 8:46Speaker 6: has new economic agenda. This is it is, you know,
- 8:49Speaker 6: just about as bad a set of circumstances as a
- 8:52Speaker 6: in power party could have going into a interim election.
