Texas is launching a high-impact crackdown on speeding this Saturday, July 18th, through August 2nd, as TxDOT teams up with Operation Slowdown to reduce deadly crashes fueled by reckless driving. Inspired by the tragic death of 19-year-old Shaundi Smallwood in a 157 mph hit-and-run crash, the “Be Safe Drive Smart” campaign urges drivers to adjust speeds to conditions, maintain safe distances, and obey posted limits—especially in work and school zones where penalties double.
