- 0:00All my travellings throughout the universe I have battled
- 0:02against evil, against power. Mad conspirators.
- 0:07I should have stayed here. The oldest civilization,
- 0:12decadent, degenerate and rotten to the core.
- 0:16Power. Make conspirators, Daleks on
- 0:17tyrants, Cybermen, they're still in the nursery compared to us 10
- 0:22million years of absolute power. That's what it takes to be
- 0:26really corrupt. Doctor, these unseemly
- 0:29outbursts. Unseemly outbursts.
- 0:32If I hadn't visited Ravalox as I then thought of it.
- 0:35The High Council have kept this outrage carefully buried, as
- 0:38presumably they have for several centuries.
- 0:41I must agree you haven't endearing habit of blundering
- 0:45into these things, Doctor, and the High Council took full
- 0:47advantage of your blunder. Explain that.
- 0:51They made a deal with the Vaillard, or as I've always
- 0:55known him, the Doctor, to adjust the evidence in return for which
- 1:00he was promised the remainder of the Doctor's regenerations.
- 1:03This is Clinton. Just a minute.
- 1:07Did you call him the doctor? There is some evil in all of us,
- 1:13Doctor, even you. A Vaillard is an amalgamation of
- 1:18darker sides of your nature, somewhere between your 12th and
- 1:22final incarnation. And I may say you do not improve
- 1:26with age. Gentlemen, may I remind you that
- 2:05this is a court for deciding the best Doctor Who story of all
- 2:07time, not a debating society for maladjusted psychotic
- 2:11sociopaths. You will therefore conduct
- 2:13yourselves in an orderly manner and show proper respect for the
- 2:17strictly cum hamster procedures. I hope I make myself very clear.
- 2:22How did you manage to sound even camper than Louis Belligue?
- 2:26It's a it's an art form, Joe. Welcome back to Strictly Cum
- 2:29Hamster everybody. I was going to start with a
- 2:32power mad podcast to watch Who's strangers in space?
- 2:36They're still in the nursery compared to us. 10 million years
- 2:39of absolute opinions. That's what it takes to be
- 2:42really corrupt. Good.
- 2:44I was actually originally going to start with Glitz's line
- 2:47saying haven't you got a ring to rub?
- 2:49I thought that might, you know, take things down a a dark Ave.
- 2:53to start with, so maybe not. Matt Michaels here.
- 2:56Give it some time. All right, Well, hello,
- 2:59everybody. I'm going to, somewhat
- 3:01haphazardly, immediately hand you over to my fabulous Co host,
- 3:05Mr. Rod Brown to do all the introductions.
- 3:08Hello Joe, How are you doing? I am about to talk about Child
- 3:11of the Town and I'm very excited.
- 3:13Yeah, we are. But we're not just discussing
- 3:15Trial of the Town or tonight. This is a really extra special
- 3:18episode because we're also going to be picking the Strictly
- 3:20favorite story for Colin Baker. So we got a double whammy
- 3:23tonight. So yeah, you're absolutely
- 3:26right. We have reached season 23 trial
- 3:28of the Time Lord. And guess what?
- 3:30It's a divisive year with fans on both sides of the fence
- 3:32throwing shade at each other. Who knew?
- 3:35But what will we think of it? Well, let's get straight into it
- 3:38and to sort out our Baronic from our microwave amplification and
- 3:43stimulated emission of radiation.
- 3:45Bravo, Sir. And of course, our catharsis of
- 3:49spurious morality, because I can't possibly leave that out,
- 3:51can I? We are joined tonight by two
- 3:54archetypal philistine, sorry, I mean special guests.
- 3:58One of them is a very welcome returnee to the Strictly dance
- 4:01floor, and the other is a man who's ponchon for innuendo and
- 4:04smut. Actually rivals Joe's, if you
- 4:07can believe it. Between us, we're going to
- 4:10decide which story is going to be lifting up the cushion
- 4:12glitter ball and which will be left to trigger a ray phase
- 4:16shift. So let's welcome tonight's
- 4:18guest, Matt. As the newbie to the Strictly
- 4:21dance floor, would you like to introduce yourself?
- 4:24I am Matt Michael, I have watched every Doctor Who story
- 4:28and blogged about it, and I've been watching for many years.
- 4:32I'm very much looking forward to this evening.
- 4:35Fabulous. You're very welcome and your
- 4:37blog was magnificent, I have to say.
- 4:39I have to warn you though, this evening a certain amount of
- 4:43graphic detail is unavoidable. Oh, when you're around Michael,
- 4:49Matt. Matt, you see, I'm confused
- 4:50already. This.
- 4:52Is going to be worse at that time and the Ronnie recorded
- 4:54isn't it? It can't be worse than the
- 4:56Silver Nemesis 1. That was just him doing the
- 5:00lady. Painful impressions all the way
- 5:02through. And the Burkin boyfriends, Yeah.
- 5:04Ride to Destiny. I don't care.
- 5:07I don't care what you're riding. Joe.
- 5:08Let's get on with the show. Daniel, would you like to bring
- 5:11some sanity back to proceedings? Yes.
- 5:13Hello, Rod. Hello, Joe.
- 5:14Hello. Hello, yes I I was a guest on
- 5:19Strictly Come Hamster season 6. So another trial.
- 5:22I seem to remember it ended in a trial and they brought me back
- 5:26for another trial. We don't just throw this stuff
- 5:29together. You know, Daniel, we do.
- 5:32We do. Very glad to be back.
- 5:35Fantastic. Well, you're both very welcome
- 5:37indeed. But before we get into the
- 5:39stories themselves, just give us a flavour of what you think
- 5:43about season 23 as a whole. Matt gives you overall feelings.
- 5:50Oh, well, it's a bit of a trial, isn't it?
- 5:53I I quite like it actually. I think it's got his detractors,
- 5:59it's got his lovers. I'm think I'm on the, I think
- 6:04I'm on the side of the lovers. Introduces Mel Bush.
- 6:06What? What more do you need?
- 6:10And Daniel? Well, yes, I like it.
- 6:13I like it too. It's feels quite modern for a a
- 6:18classic series of Doctor Who with the the trial framing
- 6:21device. And people might, I've seen,
- 6:24yeah, some opinions saying, oh, it's so wanky for Doctor Who to
- 6:28go and put itself on trial. But but courtroom dramas is what
- 6:33keeps people watching. So a lot of people, I think a
- 6:36lot of people like to tune in for for courtroom dramas, and I
- 6:40think that's probably why some of the audience tuned in for
- 6:44Child of a Time Lord. Very good point, Joe.
- 6:48I know you have particular fond memories of this season.
- 6:51Fucking love this season. I've written out a small little
- 6:54centre. I think it's ambitious, it's
- 6:56series stretching, series stretching.
- 7:00Surprising, shocking fun. It is flabby and I ain't just
- 7:04call him Baker because he has put on a bit.
- 7:06So it's decent 22, but it's stuffed with memorable dialogue
- 7:10for both good reasons and bad reasons, and I'm sure we'll get
- 7:13there. It's visually arresting and it's
- 7:16visually quite bland in places, so it's a right hodgepodge
- 7:19there. It's kind of like all of Doctor
- 7:21Who in one go. All the best and all the worst.
- 7:24But I think it's bursting with great guest stars.
- 7:26It's got great music and effects for the most part, and some
- 7:30absolutely brilliant moments. I think Trial of the Title is
- 7:33sorely underrated. Fabulous.
- 7:36Well, I remember watching this back in 1986.
- 7:39Yes, I am that old. And I remember generally
- 7:41enjoying it. Yes, I think I could see the
- 7:44floors, but it was still Doctor Who and I still loved her.
- 7:47So I was really looking forward to it, even though I went to, I
- 7:50think that's probably my second convention in summer 1986.
- 7:54And Colin was there giving his spiel and giving it his all, as
- 7:58he always did at every convention.
- 7:59And the first question from the floor was so Colin, can you tell
- 8:04me, please, is the value out really a future incarnation of
- 8:07the Doctor? Which pretty much ruined the
- 8:10surprise for everybody in the audience.
- 8:11Colin's face, I think his jaw hit the floor at that moment.
- 8:14He was incandescent with rage. But he managed to kind of keep a
- 8:18brave face on it. But was.
- 8:19It that fella from the Dwas you know that was following him
- 8:22around on all the filming locations?
- 8:23Was it him trying to ruin the season?
- 8:26It did get a lot of booing. But yeah, Paul Colton, he
- 8:29thought, you know, that was going to be the big surprise.
- 8:31It was going to get everyone talking and it was spoiled.
- 8:34So, you know, spoilers. Do you know around back in 86?
- 8:38Sorry to go off tangent already, but he was even more surprised,
- 8:41you know, when the 0 imperative was aired and he went to the
- 8:44showing of that and Peter Davidson turned up in the very
- 8:46last scene. Apparently he was incandescent
- 8:48at the end of that recording, having the the rug ripped out
- 8:51from underneath. Oh, Colin.
- 8:53Look, we're here to celebrate Colin tonight and we are going
- 8:56to celebrate him. So before we get in store,
- 8:59should we get our our comments from our listeners with that
- 9:02overall comments about the season?
- 9:04Matt Daniel, you're going to do the honour of reading them out
- 9:07for us. Would you do me a favour though?
- 9:10Yeah. If there are any comments that
- 9:11you disagree with, yeah, or agree with, if you like, you
- 9:14know you can't give feedback on them.
- 9:16For some reason, people seem to. I've got.
- 9:17I've got Thoughts. When we insult people, off you
- 9:20go. Like your cough?
- 9:24So this is Gavin. Gavin says love it.
- 9:27The theme is the best of the 80s.
- 9:29Incorrect Gavin. Colin is fabulous and Linda and
- 9:32Michael shine parts one to four. Lovely to see the Doctrine Perry
- 9:35get on correct and Glitz is brilliant.
- 9:37Correct, parts 5 to 8. Just perfection.
- 9:42We'll see as we go on. And 10 year old me was
- 9:47devastated by Perry's exit. Not as devastated as by her
- 9:51entrance, but that's a different story.
- 9:55Nice. One parts 9:00 to 12:00.
- 9:57Pip and Jane and Colin magic, parts 13 to 14.
- 10:01So good in the circumstances. That's damning with faint
- 10:04praise, isn't it? And the final cliffhanger still
- 10:07to be result? Well, not really, because did
- 10:10you not see Season 24? I think you've got some catching
- 10:12up to do. Caffeine.
- 10:13The cliffhanger has been resolved.
- 10:15Also, at least talking about the cliffhanger of the Valley Yard,
- 10:17there was Matrix by Robert Perry and Mark Tucker, trial of the
- 10:21Valley Yard from Big Finish. You know they've done some bits.
- 10:25Anyway, sorry, on to Joe Short. Yes, the lovely Joe Short says.
- 10:29When you think about the chaos behind the scenes, it's far more
- 10:31competent than it should be. Mysterious Planet is fun.
- 10:35Mind Warp is the final bit of Perry's torture porn.
- 10:38Vervoids is Agatha Christie in space with Fanny plants.
- 10:42Correct. And Ultimate Foe is a mess, but
- 10:45that's JNT's fault. Doesn't deserve the kicking many
- 10:48give it. And Colin deserved more time.
- 10:50He absolutely did, no. I've not seen many fannies, do
- 10:53they really look like that? No comment.
- 10:58I'm, I'm oblivious to it. I'm innocent.
- 11:02And yeah, OK, I don't quite, I don't quite get it.
- 11:06I'll assume they do. Sorry, sorry.
- 11:10The the the gorgeous and delightful Phil Newman says.
- 11:14If only they'd started with two apparently unconnected stories
- 11:18in which we became aware that the Doctor was under scrutiny,
- 11:21then the moment when the TARDIS appears and he's taken out of
- 11:23time, prevented from rescuing Perry, would have had even
- 11:26greater impact. Maybe Phil.
- 11:27But they didn't, so get over it. Johnny Morris says it's good,
- 11:33but not as good as it should have been or needed to be.
- 11:36The point where Doctor Who really started to fall behind
- 11:38the rest of UKTV in terms of budgets.
- 11:41It's also not clear who it is being made for, as it is now
- 11:44telling stories about the rules and law of the show in its own
- 11:48strange language of Doctor Who is.
- 11:51Like the previous season, you had time Lash.
- 11:53How was that keeping up with the rest of the world in terms of TV
- 11:56budgeting? Yes.
- 12:00That's. A bit blankety blank I guess.
- 12:07This is from Dave Javu. Great name.
- 12:11What I really like is that each segment no anti accents.
- 12:14What I really like is that each segment is a totally different
- 12:17colour and flavour. That was the really smart use of
- 12:20the trial umbrella. I don't know if that's a kind of
- 12:23clever pun on the fact that Colin's got a multi coloured
- 12:26umbrella in the Mysterious Planet.
- 12:29There you are, flavour. Is he licking these stories
- 12:33then? It's like an ice cream flavour.
- 12:35Oh, fair. OK.
- 12:37We had to get into licking quickly, didn't we Ian?
- 12:40Winterton says the stories are OK, but pretty average.
- 12:44All but ruined by the terrible trial guff.
- 12:46Except, except Jason, as the Valley Yard is magnificent.
- 12:52That's Doctor Who. Even when it's a pile of shite,
- 12:54there's still flecks of gold in there.
- 12:56Well, it's quite an image. What's my plus name?
- 12:59But yeah. This is from Oscar Groucho, a
- 13:05sharp concept A Christmas Carol, examining the character's
- 13:09morality, fudged. Now then.
- 13:15By circumstances beyond creative control.
- 13:19Yet it doesn't mask the fact that the format doesn't really
- 13:22show the full dexterity of Doctor Who the Way.
- 13:26You read them out. I'm sorry you make them all so.
- 13:30It's already hot enough in here. Gary Finizer says worst season
- 13:39of the original series. Bland direction.
- 13:41The only one big dramatic moment.
- 13:43Perry's death is changed in the final part.
- 13:46Mind warp is by far the worst, with the awful bickering between
- 13:49the Doctor and Perry. The only saving grace is Michael
- 13:53Jason. That's I.
- 13:54Mean you said original series. He hadn't seen the series 9 from
- 13:57Moffett yet. Addie, so fair.
- 13:59Fairpoint. Sorry, Rod.
- 14:03This is Noel T Simpson. Most of the stories seem like
- 14:07rejects from the 70s. Do they?
- 14:09OK, we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll challenge that.
- 14:13No, we'll find out if that's true.
- 14:14But it all adds up. Well, sadly, by episode 14,
- 14:18Colin had found his style and finally transformed into our
- 14:22hero Shane. I think.
- 14:26This is from Brigadier Bambira, actually.
- 14:28So is Noel T Simpson a pseudonym?
- 14:32I will literally be making the argument that Colin was our hero
- 14:35from the first second of the mysterious planet.
- 14:39Jr. Southall I love that after a
- 14:43hiatus and some questions over its potential future, Doctor Who
- 14:46came back with eye-catching visuals, simple but striking
- 14:49ideas, and making effective use of its history.
- 14:52Not enough About RTD 2 RTD 2 Russell C Davies Part 2.
- 14:59The trial of the Tyrant was sheer suicidal idiocy.
- 15:02You've got to remember he's, he loves series nine of the new
- 15:05series, so you know. Yeah, but he's right on that
- 15:07it's. Crazy.
- 15:08Do you know what I was like? It's very unusual to see such a
- 15:11small comment there from Jr. Southport.
- 15:12Did you edit that down a little? Bit I couldn't possibly say, OK,
- 15:15OK. This is not really mid year.
- 15:19Methinks the lady protests too much.
- 15:22A million times better than the consensus.
- 15:25Mysterious Planet is homes back to his best mind.
- 15:28Warp is fantastic playing with the format.
- 15:31Even Vervoids is OK. The matrix stuff in episode 13
- 15:36is superb, but it all falls apart with a car wreck finale.
- 15:40Not a Pip and Jane fan I sense. Not really mid year if that is
- 15:44your real name. Oh.
- 15:46Utterly evil. Barun Man says I want to see
- 15:53Trial as a misunderstood masterpiece, but it's bollocks.
- 15:57But for 13 episodes, it's the same cliffhanger of the Valley
- 16:00Yard saying that Doctor did this, he's an asshole, let's
- 16:04hang him. You remember that line once?
- 16:07Did I miss it? Joe, you're good at making
- 16:09appliance that are not in episodes.
- 16:11Just lots of dramatic zooms up his hooter.
- 16:14That's all I can remember. About the hairs on Blu-ray and
- 16:21then multiple fruit, says the worst season in Doctor Who's
- 16:26history. Until the next one.
- 16:28Oh, very, very dare you. That's.
- 16:30The commenter. What a bitch.
- 16:32Not a season. 24 fan, I get it. Right, let's get into the
- 16:36individual stories, shall we? Start with Matt.
- 16:41Come on, Baptism of Fire, You've got all four stories.
- 16:44Pick your story and give us the reasons why you're either going
- 16:47to champion it or condemn it. I'm going to go for Are you
- 16:53really offering this inconsequential silliness mind
- 16:56warp? Oh yes.
- 17:02I think Mind Warp is it's the first story in the trial where
- 17:10the trial scenes start to be a bit of a chore.
- 17:12Now, the trial scenes often get like critiqued for being a bit
- 17:16of an interruption in the flow of things, but I don't think
- 17:19they really start to do that until here.
- 17:21But that probably speaks to the fact that the story's a bit more
- 17:24complicated and elaborate than the mysterious planet.
- 17:29So, and this is a story that's by Philip Martin, who did
- 17:32vengeance on Varos, which is going to feature in the the best
- 17:35Colin discussions later in the later in the chat.
- 17:40But for me, it I think it's better than Vengeance on Varos.
- 17:43I think Vengeance on Varos has a lot of characters like Quilliam
- 17:47and the Chief who just sort of flit around in the background
- 17:50and they're kind of grotesque, but they don't really do very
- 17:54much. And I always get the sense
- 17:56sometimes that those characters can quite easily be merged into
- 17:59one character. Or if you remove Quillan would,
- 18:02would it really make that much difference?
- 18:03Whereas here the sort of mad scientist character has a real
- 18:07point. It's all about croziers, bonkers
- 18:09experiments. I think the direction is really
- 18:16good. I think it Ron Jones best
- 18:18direction. Surprisingly good, right?
- 18:20It is, yeah. The monsters in the shadows, you
- 18:23don't, you don't necessarily see like the, the sort of rack and
- 18:27the crab monsters and things like that.
- 18:29They're all all in darkness. Which, given his previous form,
- 18:34is probably all for the all for the best.
- 18:39I like that Perry is a bear chaser.
- 18:41I think we ought to keep her. We ought to keep a tally of the
- 18:44bears in this season. But she's definitely after
- 18:48herself. A bit of big old Ikanos.
- 18:51And who doesn't like a big Brian Blessed bear?
- 18:55What a performance. What a what a man.
- 18:57I I love it. I've got one at my work, Matt,
- 19:00right. I've got a Brian Blessed at my
- 19:01work and I. Love this.
- 19:04He's straight and he loves giving out hugs and every
- 19:06morning I just run up to him. Oh it's the best part of the
- 19:09day. Sorry to my offer, off now.
- 19:11But he lifts you up like you can't lost us with Paris.
- 19:14He could. He's a big, lovely, big blessed
- 19:16beard as well. Does he constantly try to get
- 19:19you to like launch suicidal charges against Tesco or
- 19:23something? Like that?
- 19:24Yeah. He works in the bakery.
- 19:25He's always pissed off. Who's in all the buns?
- 19:29Sorry, that's your argument. I think Patrick Reichardt's
- 19:34great. I think he's got he's he's so
- 19:36cool. He's he's he plays it spot on
- 19:39and everyone picks up on this, but the little sip he gives of
- 19:42that that coffee before he goes in for the urgent operation is
- 19:45great. I think he has a great double
- 19:47act with with Colin. And I think Colin also has a
- 19:50great double act with Sale. I think they become almost like
- 19:53a comedy pairing later on in the story and it works so well.
- 20:00Sils much more of a comedy character than he was in
- 20:02Vengeance, so it just gives that character more chance to be
- 20:07Sealian over the top. He doesn't need to be as
- 20:09menacing as he was in the previous story.
- 20:12He had definitely been the new companion after this and I think
- 20:18you know. You you wonder what Perry really
- 20:21saw in Econus, apart from him being a Big Bear.
- 20:23But let's let's face it, she has got used to mollifying a
- 20:26bellowing tyrant over the last few years.
- 20:29So she. Has so you know, she's probably
- 20:31well prepared, well prepared for this.
- 20:33So so I think those are the good things about it.
- 20:35And I also think it's quite nice that Sil thinks that Perry is
- 20:38revoked. Revoltingly ugly.
- 20:41Rather than blah blah. I've given that something she
- 20:44was like just continue it the sex object in the last series.
- 20:48So it's quite nice to turn that on its head and that that's
- 20:50that's played really well. Probably the only things I don't
- 20:54like about it is the story is very fuzzy like and I think the
- 20:59trial doesn't help there. So the trial introduces this
- 21:02whole thing of like falsified evidence, whereas, and if you
- 21:06strip that out, you could go, well, the doctor's obviously
- 21:08being brain damaged by the weird experiments and that's why he's
- 21:12behaving out of character. Or could it be a subtle
- 21:15manipulation? You could play with that either
- 21:17or. I think this the falsified
- 21:19evidence thing really makes it muddy, and I don't think it's
- 21:22ever properly resolved in the story.
- 21:24You know what the answer to that was supposed to be?
- 21:27Because Colin says it in the commentary.
- 21:29So he was asking Eric Saywood and like, well, what is this?
- 21:33Am I bad? Am I good?
- 21:34Why am I doing this? And he's like, oh, no, you go,
- 21:37go and ask the director. So he asked Ron Jones, what am I
- 21:40good? Am I bad?
- 21:41What's going on? Nobody said ask the writer.
- 21:43And Philip might have said, well, there was a line in the
- 21:45script. Saywood must have taken it out.
- 21:47Basically when he puts the hat on at the end of Episode 1 and
- 21:51you know, masturbates in the chair or whatever he's doing
- 21:53there, the last person that wore the hat, a sort of like a copy
- 21:58of them, stays in the hat. So basically there was like an
- 22:03imprint of Yokanos in the Doctor, which is why he's
- 22:05bellowing and wanted to fight and being crazy.
- 22:09And he says it's all about brain transfer.
- 22:11Yes. Yeah, And he goes, oh, I wish
- 22:13I'd known that I'd have played it that way.
- 22:14I said. I was just a bastard.
- 22:16You know what? Everyone's confused by it.
- 22:19There's a fucking clue in the title.
- 22:20It's called Mind Warp. His mind has been warped.
- 22:24You know, it's not exactly well hidden, is it?
- 22:27But it is you are right. Though at the time you would
- 22:29have just known it was Trial of the Time Lord episode 6 or
- 22:32whatever, so. It is confusing and you don't
- 22:34ever come to a conclusion in the story.
- 22:36Do you know about why? I think it was the the the
- 22:40machine, but, but yeah, yeah, there's the other possibilities
- 22:44as well, yeah. So, so I think that that's a bit
- 22:46of a problem and I, I really don't like the Perry death
- 22:51particularly. I think I'm really glad that
- 22:54spoilers it gets reversed in a few episodes time because I I
- 22:58think you can kind of you kind of got away with Adric as a one
- 23:01off. I really don't think we needed
- 23:03to see another companion so quickly get bumped off.
- 23:06And I've kind of the way that she's kind of stripped of any
- 23:09agency in her fate and she's just like like she was a lot of
- 23:13the previous season. She just becomes almost a piece
- 23:15of meat being used by the men just is really icky.
- 23:19And I, I know that's the point, but I kind of feel like it's a
- 23:22bit, it's a bit too icky for what I like about Doctor Who.
- 23:27She, she, she dies between saying this, doesn't she?
- 23:29You're with her and she's like, oh, I'm often healthy, huh?
- 23:31And then that's it. She's gone.
- 23:33Yeah, so it's, it's really creepy, but I think, you know,
- 23:37the Doctor goes there deliberately.
- 23:40He he manipulates his companion. He's he's there to bring down
- 23:44the government for us, beat her overnight.
- 23:48And he's got sort of a dark secrets with the Time Lords.
- 23:53This is definitely the inspiration for the entire
- 23:56Andrew Cartmel master plan. So I'm going to say go through.
- 24:01I like mind walk. Fantastic.
- 24:03Let's go to the comments. John Arnold says.
- 24:06I really want a lover for playing with the narrative and
- 24:08deliberately being unsettling, but there's a genuinely nasty
- 24:11name misogynist undercurrent that makes it queasy viewing.
- 24:16The ending is probably the bleakest few minutes in all of
- 24:18whom. John Bensalia says frustrating
- 24:21because in hindsight, a good portion of what we see is a fib.
- 24:25Good production, though, with a clammy ambience of dread, right
- 24:28down to the lighting and the score.
- 24:30Perry's apparent Mitchell brother Fate is disturbing.
- 24:33What? Does that mean?
- 24:34What? Mitchell, brother?
- 24:35Because she's bold. Bold.
- 24:38Shame they didn't keep it. Let's keep.
- 24:41Stunning. David Gillespie Press is dark
- 24:44and pushing the boundaries. In an era of fake news, deep
- 24:47fakes and AI, the idea of watching manipulated evidence
- 24:50feels very relevant. Probably the weakest segment,
- 24:53but rescued by apartheid, which is phenomenally good.
- 24:56It is Paul Smiley, one of the darkest scripts in the series.
- 25:00Perry's exit is shocking and memorable.
- 25:02Great to have Seal back. Brian Blessed is over the top.
- 25:05Crozier having a cup of tea before saving Lord Give is a
- 25:08great moment. Colin on top four once again.
- 25:12Jason Thompson said keep this for why haven't brought him.
- 25:15Said alone. He's put that in capitals.
- 25:17Yes, he's loud and bombastic, but he also does the quiet
- 25:20scenes beautifully. His devastation when he tells
- 25:23the others Dorf is dead but refuses their pity because he
- 25:26was an honourable death. Even as his tone says, he's
- 25:28trying to convince himself as much as anything he's
- 25:31wonderfully portrayed. Keep it.
- 25:33Paul Dunn says I hated it as a child but I love it now but
- 25:37needs more clarity as to what happened to the doctor.
- 25:40Is the matrix lying? Is the doctor changed?
- 25:42Is he faking? The Lucosa is superb.
- 25:45The Lucosa is superb. Well done Paul Seal is repugnant
- 25:49as ever. The ending Fantastic work by
- 25:51Nicola Shame is undermined later.
- 25:54A friend, he says an ugly, depressing watch, but it's
- 25:56fascinating for that. Perry's demise is shocking.
- 25:59Imagine they're stuck with her and the doctor is evil for a
- 26:02while. Seal is always good value and
- 26:04Brian Blessed plays Brian Blessed.
- 26:06Underrated. Oh, here's my nemesis.
- 26:09Michael Storm says it's the sick Doctor tropes on crack, garishly
- 26:14coloured great music and a real sense of impending doom for poor
- 26:17old Perry. A great cast help elevate an
- 26:19unclear script and one of college greatest performances at
- 26:23the end of the story. Keep is no longer my nemesis.
- 26:27The Big Orange, Michael says. It's been 30 years and I still
- 26:31can't figure out the Doctor's motivation.
- 26:32That's not a good thing, though it does feature one of Colin
- 26:35Baker's finest moments with the line You Killed Perry.
- 26:39If only the rest of his era had given him material like this.
- 26:43Bill Newman says my favorite. It's such a dark black comedy
- 26:47and one of the most atmospherically lit stories in
- 26:49the 1980s. And I adore Hartley's Moody
- 26:52electronic score. More Cressus is incredibly
- 26:55exciting at the time, especially Part 8IN retrospect is a
- 26:58backward step to the excesses of season 22 and probably my least
- 27:02favorite segment. James Lark commits the basic
- 27:05scene of not knowing why characters are doing what they
- 27:07do, and when the leads behaving like an absolute monster, that's
- 27:10a huge problem. Not a lot happens either, so the
- 27:13whole thing is a bit dreary. A bit dreary this OK, but as the
- 27:18middle of act of an epic 14 parter, it sort of gets away
- 27:21with it. I mean, it's more dramatic than
- 27:23the Feast of Stephen, right? Lampin says the toughest watch
- 27:27of the season. Great to have still back.
- 27:29Probably the greatest villain of the 80s, both Nabil and Chris
- 27:32Ryan a superb love. The paint box effect looks good.
- 27:34Very 80s and Brian Blessed is well.
- 27:37Brian Blessed it very entertaining.
- 27:40It says brain blessed on my page bling.
- 27:47Blessing. A welcome return for sale, but
- 27:50an utterly woeful farewell for Perry.
- 27:53Doctor Who has a long history of four companion exits, but
- 27:56Perry's is definitely one of the worst.
- 27:58A reasonably good story overall. Keep it.
- 28:01A lot of positivity here for my. Tom Newsome says there's
- 28:04something really eerie about it. This is far more adult than the
- 28:06usual Doctor Who, but not explaining how much the doctor
- 28:09is complicit is a mistake. You know the one scene they
- 28:12really do need to explain is him on the rocks.
- 28:14He's got a chain to the rocks. You know he's horrible in that
- 28:17scene. PlayStation Gamer 187 says out
- 28:21of all of Classic Who, I find the scene with Bald Perry the
- 28:24most upsetting and difficult to watch.
- 28:26I skip that bit every time. It's just not for me.
- 28:29Who signed that shite off JNT? AJP says I read lusted after by
- 28:34half the Galaxy and yet folds for the king with half a brain
- 28:37cell. No, not having that.
- 28:41No, it'd be a massive power swap, I'm telling you.
- 28:44Anthony Carroll. Great apart from Mad Colin and
- 28:47the ending was gripping. RIP Perry.
- 28:52Though Daniel, are you one over to the charms of mind war?
- 28:56Well, it's astounding. Time is fleeting.
- 29:03No, I won't go through that mind war.
- 29:05Yes, I I like it. It's it is, as everyone has
- 29:10said, it's a very upsetting story.
- 29:12And I think, yeah, the bit of as, as Matt said, the scene of
- 29:16Perry being strapped down and gagged and having her head
- 29:20shaved. And it's just the most
- 29:23humiliating thing that's probably happened to her, you
- 29:27know, since since season 22, really.
- 29:32And so. Yeah.
- 29:33And it's just that is the ultimately, you know, the
- 29:36ultimate humiliation you could do, you know, and the fact that,
- 29:40yes, as, as we mentioned, she dies between scenes and, and
- 29:45she's, yeah, reincarnated as this, as Kiev, as the, as the,
- 29:49as a vessel for Kiev and then blasted away in this kind of
- 29:53white light when, when Jochanus goes nuts.
- 29:57And yeah, and it is quite troubling, but I do think it's a
- 30:01very powerful bit of acting from from Nicola Bryant because she
- 30:07gets, you know, she gets she gets several moments during this
- 30:10story, actually. She gets this lovely moment with
- 30:14with Jokanos, with Brian Blessed, where she's homesick
- 30:17and she talks to him about love, which is an emotion he can't
- 30:20really understand. And she has to explain it to
- 30:22him. And then he tells her about his
- 30:25what's going to happen to him when he died.
- 30:27And it's very much the sort of Viking equivalent of of
- 30:31Valhalla. And you know, he'll go to and
- 30:33he'll, he'll fight and he'll fight forever and, and, and she
- 30:37said, well, you know you would. And they, they kind of share a
- 30:39laugh. It's a lovely, lovely bit.
- 30:41Lovely bit of acting between. You know, Daniel is almost Star
- 30:44Trek for a second because someone actually says, well,
- 30:47what is that love? And I was like, oh, God, no,
- 30:50please. But then at the end, they all
- 30:52laughing about it. And I'm like, OK, yeah, they've
- 30:54got it right. Well done.
- 30:55Yeah, yeah. And I mean, that's the thing I
- 30:57was like, because I really like Perry and I know she she whines
- 31:02on a bit and she's the companion who doesn't want to be really
- 31:05want to be there. And she, as we said, we she's
- 31:07lusted after by half the Galaxy. But there's also this very sort
- 31:12of warm side to her where she's she I kind of like her bickering
- 31:16with Colin because she she's kind of the the sort of stroppy,
- 31:22you know, very stroppy Madam who's been dragged along and she
- 31:25doesn't want to be there and she keeps kind of poking holes in
- 31:28Colin's ego, you know, So they love their kind of back and
- 31:31forth together. And as has been said in in many
- 31:34of the comments, they're they're much sort of more comfortable
- 31:37together this season. They're much warmer.
- 31:39They have a nice kind of camaraderie going.
- 31:42But so so to then inflict that on her at the end.
- 31:46And I, I'm going to probably go the other way from Matt then in
- 31:49that case, because I am quite kind of, I'm quite affronted by
- 31:56the fact that they, they reverse it in the ultimate foe because
- 32:00it's to, to, to deliver such a powerful exit and then for JNT
- 32:04to go, Oh, well, no, she's not dead, don't worry.
- 32:07And I'm really like after all that.
- 32:13So, and I mean, yes, I too would like to be married off to Brian
- 32:18Blessed, but it's just that yet another one of those companion
- 32:22cliches that when they leave, they have to get married off to
- 32:24a man because that's all they, you know, that's all that's
- 32:28that's their whole identity. But anyway, so, so yeah, so
- 32:32that's my first thing is, is as upsetting as it is, Perry's exit
- 32:36is really powerfully done. And Collins, we, we, we
- 32:41mentioned Collins reaction when he says you killed Perry.
- 32:44But immediately afterwards, also in the, in the trial, he says,
- 32:48he says, you know, the, the, the high Council has no right to, to
- 32:54where is it? Where's my line?
- 32:55Sorry, yes, when he says the high council has no right to
- 33:00order Perry's or anyone else's death.
- 33:02And there's this catch in his voice.
- 33:04So you can just sense that this it really, really effects him.
- 33:09And then yes, the so my second thing would be the guest cast
- 33:12because the the the Colin and Nicola are great, but the, the
- 33:15rest of the guest cast are so good.
- 33:18I mean, we mentioned Brian Blessed.
- 33:21So you know, the, the, the, the, the.
- 33:26Flayfish sustains the body fuse the.
- 33:30Warrior. Spirit.
- 33:33But I also, yeah, I also like Crozier because he's he just
- 33:40seems to be so done with everyone's shit.
- 33:42He's so sort of like deadpan for most of the story.
- 33:46And then it's at the end when when the when they kill Perry,
- 33:50that there's this madness behind his eyes and the full mad
- 33:52scientist thing comes out finally.
- 33:55So it's a very clever performance where he's been
- 33:57playing it down through the whole thing and then he finally
- 34:00explodes at the end, you know, And how does she where he is
- 34:03when? When it looks like Keith's going
- 34:05to die and it just goes over to her and go you'll not die on me.
- 34:08And the half? Heartedness sort of fact is
- 34:10trying to just putting. CPR on everything you're not on
- 34:14the baseball star. Nice.
- 34:16Great. And we didn't.
- 34:18Mention Christopher. Ryan But he's very funny in
- 34:20this, that voice that he has. So it's no wonder they brought
- 34:25him back as general style in the new series and and yes, and and
- 34:31finally the look, because when they when they first arrive on
- 34:36what? What's the name of the planet
- 34:37Thoros? Thoros Beta Beta yes.
- 34:40Yes. So that sort of, yeah, pink and
- 34:43blue and green. And it's it's it's shows that
- 34:46even even in season 23, Doctor Who is still being inventive
- 34:51with that Vista of the distant moon and the pink water.
- 34:55And you can tell, yes, that that it's kind of a filter and it's
- 34:59awkwardly kind of done, but it's to to show that sort of level of
- 35:03of invention. Still, I think is is really
- 35:05good. You've been so GA.
- 35:08Y Daniel G. AY, yeah, it's.
- 35:11A club in London. Basically, if you go on a
- 35:12Saturday night, it basically looks like Fort Ross beta every
- 35:15time. You know purples, pinks,
- 35:18there's. Also lots of bald headed.
- 35:20Men in there as well and loads of bears.
- 35:23Little pink pteroleptils. There's a few werewolves.
- 35:25As well Jesus. And it's not just your mind
- 35:30they're warping. You're brought Brown.
- 35:34Behave yourself and we mentioned seal.
- 35:38Who, Yeah, is so vile in vengeance on Varos.
- 35:41And here he's more of a comedy character where, you know, he's
- 35:44so deferential and sycophantic towards Kiev, you know?
- 35:46Oh, magnificence. Oh, you look.
- 35:50So. So, Jeff, I could lose an
- 35:52important fish. Concession there you.
- 35:54Go half my. Money if you give me a 5 second
- 35:57start all right, you prophetess names all my money he's great
- 36:02and he he would have been a great companion.
- 36:04You're right, he would have been great and.
- 36:08So yeah, of Wilco. And it's as it is the sort of
- 36:11the sort of sequel to Vengeance on Varos, but it kind of
- 36:14scathingly deconstructs the, the, the previous season, you
- 36:17know, again, everyone, everyone, pretty much everyone involved is
- 36:21a bastard and no one wins in the end.
- 36:23And it all ends really unpleasantly, which I, I do
- 36:27think is a brave place for Doctor Who to go, even when
- 36:30they're trying to be more, more, more humorous and more friendly
- 36:35this season. You know, especially that you
- 36:38know that that warm, that warm camaraderie between the Doctor
- 36:41and Perry where they have to resuscitate the what?
- 36:46What is it I? Remember the name of the
- 36:48monster? What?
- 36:49Is it the RAH? The.
- 36:50Rah, sorry. Yes.
- 36:52And and he says, oh, you know, would nurse, nurse, Nurse Brown,
- 36:55will you perform the skedaddle test?
- 36:57It's great. Come over here.
- 36:58And oh, that's just yeah, they have a shorthand together which
- 37:01I think come round here. I think you'll find the
- 37:03alternative would be a lot worse.
- 37:07Get your acting skills for Bloody.
- 37:08Good news, it's very. Funny isn't it?
- 37:11It's got some great one liners like Then Where Will You Be?
- 37:15Dead. No, wasn't that.
- 37:20There's something, there's something this dark.
- 37:22There are some absolute comedy gold peppered through it.
- 37:25Are they? Oh, and Perry plays.
- 37:27Peacemaker between Dorf and You can't, That's just she.
- 37:31Can't waiting to happen, isn't it?
- 37:32Let's rest 1st and. Then March.
- 37:34There's a good world, huh? Oh, it's like she's in the room
- 37:39the last time I heard a Perry. Worse than that was Colin
- 37:42reading out Attack an Asylum and noble.
- 37:43I was like. Destiny, isn't that just.
- 37:47A fancy name for blank Chance destiny.
- 37:51No chance. Oh yes, it's going through
- 37:56fabulous. Joe, do you want to go next?
- 37:59No, I want you to go. Next, because I am very
- 38:01intrigued to hear what you have to say and I'd like the deciding
- 38:04vote. Well, I'm going to start by.
- 38:06Saying I don't understand why people, we've touched on it
- 38:08already, why people find this confusing?
- 38:10Because I don't think it's confusing at all.
- 38:13In Episode 5, before the Doctor gets put into the machine, I say
- 38:17exactly what he's saying, Joe, about him absorbing some of
- 38:20Brian Blessed's energy. But also, we've just seen the
- 38:23Doctor energy. Yeah, we've just seen the Doctor
- 38:27pull that machine to bits, and then he gets put straight into
- 38:29it. So clearly something has gone
- 38:31wrong with it. The Doctor's mind gets
- 38:33scrambled, as I said, a la mind warp of the title.
- 38:36And then for Episode 6, the Doctor, when he comes back to
- 38:40the trial, he's not saying that didn't happen, which is what he
- 38:42does in Vervoids. He constantly says, I don't
- 38:45remember. So there is a big difference.
- 38:47At that point. I think it's very clear his mind
- 38:50has been scrambled and what we're seeing is the truth.
- 38:53That's the Doctor with his mind being scrambled because Crozier
- 38:58trusts him to do everything. He trusts him to take away Perry
- 39:00and torture on the rocks, which he does.
- 39:03That's very different then when we start coming into 7 and 8,
- 39:06when it the Doctor, the way Colin acts, he's toned it right
- 39:09the way down. So I always read that is fine.
- 39:12Colin's now got over this temporary bout of insanity.
- 39:16He's coming back to himself, and now he is pretending to be on
- 39:20the side of prose. Yeah, just not explicit.
- 39:22It's not explicit and it's. Not it's not.
- 39:24There's no point where he's repentant.
- 39:25And goes, Oh yeah, sorry, I'll change up on those rocks.
- 39:28That was absolutely not. Maybe he's had.
- 39:30Very little time together after that.
- 39:31In fact, the last scene. Between the doctor and Perry is
- 39:34at the end of Episode 2, where she goes look at what you are
- 39:37now. I hate your guts and they never
- 39:40see each other again. Yeah, which is tragic.
- 39:41It's. Really.
- 39:42So it's not. That they started though, right?
- 39:44So full circle. Very true.
- 39:48But apart from that, I am going to say about Mind Warp that I
- 39:52absolutely fucking love Mind Warp.
- 39:55Yes, it's by far for me the favorite story of this too.
- 39:59We've got this completely. Wrong, John I.
- 40:00Thought this was the one you hated?
- 40:02I love mind warp I. Think it's brilliant.
- 40:06My first reason for loving it is part 5 S right from the very
- 40:10start of this story you can see and hear there is completely
- 40:14different mysterious planet. The music that heralds the
- 40:17spaceship is suddenly dark and foreboding.
- 40:20The trial scene is played seriously.
- 40:22We get rid of all those juvenile jokes about name calling.
- 40:26We're in some more sophisticated language 1 upmanship.
- 40:29And then Matt, you were talking about the the kind of trial
- 40:32interruptions saying you thought they kind of faulted a bit here.
- 40:35I think in episode 5 they're brilliant because I don't want
- 40:39to pre empt mysterious planet. But in mysterious planet the
- 40:43interruptions don't necessarily add to the story.
- 40:45In episode 5 they absolutely do. There are three trial
- 40:48interruptions, and they all make complete sense for a trial
- 40:52scenario. You've got the first one when
- 40:55the Valliard picks up the Doctor saying who else is there, and
- 40:58the Valliard says, yes, this shows your arrogance.
- 41:01Perfectly justified, makes sense.
- 41:03The second is following the death of the rock and the
- 41:05Doctor's defending himself. And again, the Valliard says
- 41:08there's more to come. So lots of foreshadowing coming.
- 41:11And then the Third Point is when the Valliard makes the point
- 41:13that Perry is the first one to go into danger, when they have
- 41:16that conversation about your companions, go twice into
- 41:18danger, the number of times is you.
- 41:20And again, it's all this very clever foreshadowing.
- 41:23You don't know at the time, but that's there is something bad
- 41:26coming down the track and I think the whole atmosphere and
- 41:29the music all starts telling you something is wrong here, this is
- 41:33not right. Maybe part of the problem is?
- 41:35That the main story is interesting enough and well
- 41:39executed enough that you just don't want to come away from it
- 41:41because yeah, that's that point. Those trial scenes are making.
- 41:44Sense because it's still halting the action no matter what it
- 41:46does it does but I think they. I think we're finally making
- 41:49good use of of the trial umbrella, which I don't think we
- 41:52have done today. So that kind of works.
- 41:55You've talked about it before, the wonderful use of paint box
- 41:58and the pink skies and the blue season and the planet Thora
- 42:01sulphur in the background hanging there in the sky looks
- 42:03absolutely beautiful. I'm going to call out the it's
- 42:06done better in greatest. Show and in season 26 I don't
- 42:09think it's ever done better than mine.
- 42:11Warp. I think it's just yeah.
- 42:13It looks brilliant. The fact that they walk into
- 42:15just everything about it, it just feels quite incongruous and
- 42:18wrong, but right at the same time.
- 42:20And even like when he zaps that rock and the rock imploding
- 42:23itself, which usually would look incredibly polystyrene or like a
- 42:27balloon being right down because it's in blue, you kind of accept
- 42:31that and it looks much better. So I think the visuals look
- 42:34great, The music. I loved him.
- 42:35I was going to call Rich Tartley out as one of my three reasons,
- 42:38but I've had squeeze it Hex so many great things to talk about
- 42:41this story. But the musics great.
- 42:43We get to meet all the supporting cast.
- 42:45Daniel, you're absolutely right, an amazing cast.
- 42:48I'm going to add a Libby Parsons to that as well as Matrona
- 42:52because I love Matrona. Don't even she's so.
- 42:54Camp. She's so camp.
- 42:56That's why I love her. She's.
- 42:59Amazing. The whole cast is fantastic.
- 43:02So my first reason is Part 5. My second reason, Matt, you just
- 43:06touched on the end there. This is hilarious.
- 43:09It's one of the funniest Doctor Who stories from the classic era
- 43:12whilst embracing the darkness, which is a very difficult thing
- 43:15to put those two together. And some of the humour is quite
- 43:18dark, some of it's quite broad. It just hits the spot.
- 43:21There's so many things. I just burst out laughing.
- 43:24Episode 1 where you've got Brian Blessed lying on the lying on
- 43:28the couch with the machine on and Reichardt thinks that he's
- 43:31he's knocked out and all Brian Blessed does is open his eyes
- 43:35and go stomp. It's just so funny.
- 43:39Everything Brian Blessed does. This is comedy genius.
- 43:43I take great exceptions to people in the comments that
- 43:45said, oh, he's just been Brian Blessed.
- 43:47Not at all. All those ticks and whistles
- 43:49everywhere. Every line he delivers has got a
- 43:52unique way of delivery. It's best.
- 43:54It is the best. Bit is when he comes well after
- 43:57Dorf dies and he's really, and he underplays it brilliantly and
- 44:01goes, no, you know, he ties an orderable death and then he's
- 44:04like, right, let's fucking kill a lot of them, let's go all up.
- 44:09You know, Rumble Solomon, It's, it's just.
- 44:12I'm sure that's. Not on the page.
- 44:14He's really brought life to that.
- 44:17We talked about the scene where he talks about being reborn
- 44:19until he becomes a God, but there's so many other funny
- 44:22scenes in here still trying to wake up Kev and you get his face
- 44:26right in the camera. And Kev wakes up.
- 44:30Like, oh. Getting away from.
- 44:31Me, the old. Mentor in.
- 44:33Episode 4 would rather die than have you kind of shout.
- 44:36That's it. He's the best character of the.
- 44:38Whole just go. Just go.
- 44:41Believe once he's in the. Fisherman's body just becomes
- 44:43With fish. He's constantly can I smell fish
- 44:46and it's just it is hilarious. Doesn't he go at 1.0?
- 44:51For one wish wiggling moment, I thought you were going to kill
- 44:53him. It's just it's.
- 44:56Comedy gold. And my third reason?
- 44:59Sorry Matt, I'm taking exception to you.
- 45:01I think Perry's fate here is magnificent.
- 45:04Look, trial had got to make an impact.
- 45:05And yes, whilst we love the campery of Linda Bellingham.
- 45:09Linda Bellingham It's not something that's massively going
- 45:11to grab audiences. So they've needed to do
- 45:13something brave, something powerful, something shocking.
- 45:16And I think they do that here by by killing Perry.
- 45:19It's got so hideously with the blurred pictures, the slow
- 45:24motion, the bald cap on Perry, a voice treatment, it finally
- 45:28makes trial into event TV. And the fact that Time Lords
- 45:31have sanctioned this and turn Yukonos into as an assassin, you
- 45:34know, there's suddenly real drama here.
- 45:37So yeah, I cannot say enough good things about Mind Warp.
- 45:40I absolutely adore it. It is funny though, how
- 45:42suddenly. Sagacity in the trial room
- 45:44suddenly seems to be the spokesperson for all of the
- 45:46time. But you have you have picked.
- 45:49Up the one for a mess. Yeah, she.
- 45:52Suddenly knows everything up to. Now she knows nothing, and then
- 45:54all of a sudden in that final scene, she knows everything.
- 45:57So yeah, they needed another character.
- 45:59I really thought you were going. To pan that one, no.
- 46:02I've always loved mine more but. Watching it, I've watched it
- 46:05many times, but watching it with a critical eye for this, I just
- 46:08think it's an amazing bit of TV. Well, unfortunately I don't
- 46:11really. Have too much to add because
- 46:13everyone said every single one of my notes.
- 46:16The music is brilliant. The sets, the sets look so
- 46:19expensive. That fabulous door that Colin
- 46:21Baker keeps going on about that was getting paid more than
- 46:23Nicola Bryant when he found the invoice lying around on the set.
- 46:26Even that looks amazing. The lighting for this, This is
- 46:29Ron Jones who directed Time Flight, for God's sakes.
- 46:32And those, you know, wobbling poos on that sound stage.
- 46:35I mean, what the hell? You actually see Ron Jones learn
- 46:38how to direct and he gets better and better because you go for
- 46:42Frontiers Vengeance of Varos, Black Orchid, Arc of.
- 46:46Infinity. Yeah.
- 46:47He sort of gets better all the time.
- 46:49So the production value for a Doctor Who budget, I'm not sure
- 46:53what Jonathan Morris was talking about with this story because I
- 46:55think they are sort of on par with at this point.
- 46:57Can I just throw in as well, Joe you?
- 46:58Might be saying but can I just throw in the lighting as well
- 47:00the strobe? Lighting the strobe is just
- 47:04we've. Had so many of those.
- 47:05Dreadful. Up, up Colin Baker's nose.
- 47:07Cliffhangers. But this time Ron Jones goes
- 47:09right. Just make sure that strobe
- 47:11light's ready to go as soon as I zoom in so it's complete
- 47:14blackness. And then his face just lights up
- 47:17and then the music cuts in it's wonderful direction.
- 47:20I think the last episode is one of the best last episodes in all
- 47:24of Doctor Who. And it's because Doctor Who
- 47:26doesn't really do injustice or that's not fair.
- 47:29There's usually like a nice resolution things in Doctor Who.
- 47:32And I really love the fact that a bit like Earth shock you get.
- 47:36And I remember feeling at age 13, that sick feeling in your
- 47:39gut that something is wrong here.
- 47:41This is not going the way Doctor Who's.
- 47:43And then when the TARDIS takes the Doctor away and suddenly
- 47:47he's on the track, I'm like, what is going on?
- 47:49I knew things were going bad. And then parents death is
- 47:53unbelievably dramatic. I I love it and I know it's
- 47:56awful. But I think if Nicola Bryan
- 47:59endorses that ending and she, you know, she wanted to go out
- 48:02of the bang and boy did she. Yeah, I think it's it's a
- 48:05wonderful last episode. It's truly dramatic.
- 48:08And all those great things you guys said about Colin Baker in
- 48:11the last scene, you know, he's sort of under playing it.
- 48:14He's devastated. You know, it's a six doctor
- 48:17we've not really seen before. But right at the end, of course,
- 48:20the old Collins back. I have every intention of
- 48:24finding out what it is and zoom in on his face, of course.
- 48:28And you know he's going to tear down that entire fucking
- 48:30courtroom by the end of this season.
- 48:31Because you know who would want to be on the wrong side of Colin
- 48:34Baker when he was angry? Unfortunately enough, the
- 48:36Vervoids. Next but that's that's still to
- 48:39come and just. Perry's role in this story, I
- 48:42think it's it's wonderful. You said it already.
- 48:44The skedaddle test, the the sitcom in the making, Her and
- 48:49Yukanos. I would love to watch that.
- 48:53Yeah, I think Nicola Bryan in both Mysterious Planet and Mind
- 48:56Warp gets great opportunities of the sort she wasn't really
- 48:58getting in 22. So yeah, I think it's a great
- 49:01production. I think it ends brilliantly.
- 49:03I think it's not the best of the year, but it's out there.
- 49:08Let's put it through. So Mind Warp.
- 49:10Goes through Daniel, your story, right?
- 49:15Let's talk about mysterious planets because this is probably
- 49:20my favorite. I so Rod, you remember the
- 49:26previous time I was on, we talked about the Crotons maybe.
- 49:31There. Is more planning.
- 49:32To this than before which I. Guess what?
- 49:34It's. The crotons too, Yes, Well,
- 49:37quite. Yes, I, I, we, so I, I remember
- 49:39being I quite enjoy the Crotons, but I didn't end up putting it
- 49:43through. We had another guest on who was
- 49:45far more scathing than I was. Can't you imagine?
- 49:47Who you who you mean? We love you, Gary, but after?
- 49:53But after, yeah, after watching those crotons going, you know, 7
- 49:57Vector 0, seeing the updated version in Mysterious Planet
- 50:03with the robot draftro, that's his name is a huge improvement.
- 50:10So that's not to say that Robert Hose entirely remade the
- 50:13Crotons, but the, the sort of big kind of ideas are still
- 50:17there. And it's just, I don't know if
- 50:20it's if he had help or if there were other contributions.
- 50:24But for a, for a, for a script that's from a writer who was not
- 50:29very well at the time, and it's one of the last scripts he ever
- 50:33wrote. It's I mean it that that script
- 50:36is just one great line after another.
- 50:40The dialogue just, I mean, I was, I had, I was, it was making
- 50:44me giddy. I was having so much fun
- 50:45watching it. Will you give us a quote please
- 50:48you? Must have one written down
- 50:49somewhere. So many.
- 50:50Oh. Can't we just have the edited
- 50:52highlights? No.
- 50:54Typical episodic. I can't remember that long
- 50:57interface. Thank you.
- 50:59Well, Colin especially. I mean, he gets all the best
- 51:01ones. So, you know, that's the problem
- 51:03with, that's the problem with pallid little swats like you
- 51:06Balazar, You gotta even organize kind of vision stoning.
- 51:13What else? Oh yes, well, he does get one
- 51:16kite clanger of a line. I think it's at the episode at
- 51:19the end of episode 2, the cliffhanger where they're being
- 51:21chased and they used to get chased into the tunnel and
- 51:23they're all kind of trapped and Colin goes, I think this could
- 51:27be the end. Oh, come.
- 51:29On you've. Been in worse places and people
- 51:33say that mind. Warp has a knowing eye.
- 51:35Come on now and. Well, a lot of the the, the
- 51:38great dialogue has helped. Well, Robert Holmes brings back
- 51:42all his great double axe. So not just the doctor and
- 51:45Perry, but glitz and dibber. Oh my God, it's getting.
- 51:51Warm in here. Oh, he's so.
- 51:53Hot, isn't he a. Bear of the Month for this
- 51:55story. Well, you've got a bear.
- 51:57And you've got an autumn there that that way he's styled.
- 52:01His beard is just styled. It's just great.
- 52:05I could just see you with that. Beard.
- 52:06Actually, Daniel, well, don't I look like a philanthropist?
- 52:11Well, how would I know? I've never.
- 52:12Seen one. So yeah.
- 52:16So Glitz and Dibber and also those two, those two who are
- 52:20locked in with the robot, What is it?
- 52:21Hunka and Andrew. That's.
- 52:24Right. Yes.
- 52:26Who have these kind of endlessly dry lines.
- 52:29So there's one where they're always bickering and, you know,
- 52:33one of them says, says, you know, they're coming towards us.
- 52:38Oh Hunka, you have a gift for the obvious.
- 52:42He calls. Colin.
- 52:43Hideous in the extreme, yeah. Well, yes.
- 52:48And then? And, and Drathro gets so
- 52:49annoyed, you know, he's like silence you, you 2 drain my
- 52:52energy reserve with your constant constant infantile
- 52:55bickering. So, yeah, there's so many great
- 52:58lines to that, but there's also some great humor with yeah, with
- 53:01Colin and and Nicola too, because you know, there's that
- 53:05bit where he gets, well, he gets tied up three times during this
- 53:08story. And, and, and there's, I think
- 53:12it's the second time where he's he's just coming round and, and
- 53:16he thinks she's Sarah Jane, which.
- 53:19You know, this is a nice. And she's like, no, I'm not the
- 53:22Sarah Jane, I'm Perry. And he immediately goes back to
- 53:24barking orders. Is he trying to do a Tom
- 53:26Mitchell? Yeah, of course he's my.
- 53:27Head hurts a bomber. Bru.
- 53:29Sarah Jane, Yeah, it's. The worst one I've.
- 53:31Ever heard whilst the camera's shooting up his nostril?
- 53:37So that's so those so. Yeah, those are the two main
- 53:40reasons is, is, is Robert Holmes and and Colin Baker as well.
- 53:45Who, who really sells it? He and he and Nicola.
- 53:47I love Perry's outfit in this. The the sort of the, the, the
- 53:51glamorous kind of blazer that she has and the, and I think
- 53:55there's that there's that amazing from publicity shot of
- 53:58them both having twirling boaters top hats and yeah, top.
- 54:02Hats and canes are so giant. See, isn't it?
- 54:06We're back, baby. Razzmatazz makes makes them
- 54:09magic. There is there.
- 54:11Is also a bit of but a bit of pathos in there too, because you
- 54:15know, there's there's another pairing which I didn't mention,
- 54:18Merdeen and Grell, I think, or Greal.
- 54:21Grell. Grell, Yeah.
- 54:24Merdeen, Mr. Train. But yeah, there's that.
- 54:28Yeah. Because he ends up killing Grell
- 54:33and saving the Doctor and Perry. And then they have that moment
- 54:35where he's kind of, yeah, standing over, well, crouching
- 54:38over his dead body. And he seems really upset by it,
- 54:41you know? And well, Colin and Nicola have
- 54:46a couple of moments like that too, where he gives that
- 54:48gorgeous speech about, you know, macho disperses and I can't, I
- 54:53can't remember the rest tonight, sorry.
- 54:55But but yeah, she's my defence. Don't worry.
- 54:59OK, great then. But he.
- 55:02And then? And that bit where he's trying
- 55:04to win Draffrow round as well. And he gives that whole speech
- 55:07about life and, and, and how and the function of life and
- 55:12everything. Everything's supposed to have a
- 55:13purpose. So, you know, there's a lot of
- 55:16there is a lot of the bit of the spiritual there in there as
- 55:20well, I think. And my final reason, which is
- 55:23it's a quite basic one, but they're just them running around
- 55:27the woods a lot, which I I think that Doctor Who has this
- 55:29charming thing that it does where it takes some woods and it
- 55:33says it's an alien planet. And after about 20 minutes,
- 55:36you're like, yeah, it's an alien planet.
- 55:38Yeah. And you know, they've done that
- 55:40in the new Series A little bit as well.
- 55:42But but not just that, the, the, the gorgeous opening shot at the
- 55:48beginning of that model shot, which cost, you know, £8000.
- 55:51And they pan around, you know that station and you see the
- 55:56TARDIS go down and, and it's just brilliant and music there
- 56:00as. Well, that belt holding and it
- 56:02sounds quite like a. Funeral almost.
- 56:04It's going to be the most expensive.
- 56:06Doctor Who season ever until Colin Baker arrived.
- 56:09Until shot 2. The Tardis.
- 56:11Wobbles, yeah. Fabulous.
- 56:14Shall we go to the comments? James Lark says.
- 56:17Genuinely creates a sense that something epic is beginning.
- 56:20It all looks great with gorgeous location work and a hugely
- 56:23atmospheric beneath the plant. The ape style underground sets
- 56:26creating the thrill of a wider mystery and a hint of
- 56:29conspiracy. Also this is really fun and
- 56:31funny. Shame the trial itself is
- 56:33already a bit of a damp square. John.
- 56:36I never thought I'd. Ever hear John Bensarlia
- 56:38criticize anything in the classic series?
- 56:40I think it's just gone to his head now.
- 56:41Hasn't it Holmes by? Numbers, but the Doctor and
- 56:45Perry relationship is a lot more relaxed and glitz is an instant
- 56:48here. But courtroom bickering does
- 56:50nothing for me. The season's main flaw?
- 56:52Jones Sims has Cuddles the monkey on her head.
- 56:57Only so, Luke. Sims Jenkins says the casting
- 56:59characters are great and Colin is fantastic.
- 57:02You can tell Holmes didn't write the courtroom stuff though.
- 57:04I wish Judge Lady was serval and rather than serve a bland but
- 57:08keep it Oh no I that. No, no, no, no, no.
- 57:11Oh, you see, you wrote the. Courtroom scene stuff.
- 57:15You. You.
- 57:15Can't. Insult Dame Linda Bellingham and
- 57:18Colin's petulance. That has come from Robert Holmes
- 57:21for sure. I mean, sure, he wrote in the
- 57:24script he, you know, he sits down like a a child that's won
- 57:27the argument every single time, John Arnold says.
- 57:30Plenty of mitigating circumstances given it's a
- 57:32seriously ill writer being ill treated by the BBC hierarchy.
- 57:37There's elements of Holmes's wit and big ideas, but bar Tony
- 57:40Selby, the execution is all around flats.
- 57:45Michael Storms is a. Reasonable opener, but it feels
- 57:47like Holmes is stroking his inner Terry Nation, revisiting
- 57:50his greatest hits with dramatically diminishing
- 57:52returns. Nitz and Deb are fun, as is
- 57:55Balazar, Drathro sounds permanently constipated, and the
- 57:58two geniuses make me think of a shit version of children's
- 58:01comedians Trevor and Simon Bennett he mentioned.
- 58:04Constipation, shit like, has he got some issues?
- 58:07Michael Storm, Paul Cresser says.
- 58:09That opening shot was incredible at the time, and the change in
- 58:12the Doctor Perry relationship was refreshing in retrospect.
- 58:16It's a bit lightweight for Holmes, and it's a shame that
- 58:18none of the other effects matched up to the opening, but
- 58:21it's still very watchable, Harris Bowley says.
- 58:24Great. Music, vocation, cast, and a
- 58:25story that's aligned to the great tales of destruction of
- 58:28our society and how we develop as a species.
- 58:31Plus the best looking robot ever in Who, the L1 and the 6th
- 58:37Doctrine. Perry are wonderful in harmony.
- 58:39Jack Coyer. Says part of this film or
- 58:41Douglas Adams and Bob Holmes, right down to the deliberately
- 58:44daft title. The first info dumped glitz and
- 58:47debut is incomprehensibly bad. I can't believe it makes it to
- 58:51the screen. Joan Sims knows exactly what's
- 58:53going on and her not Bill Reed is a fun addition, but my
- 58:57favorite is Trafro the paranoid Croton and the Aryan Rosencrantz
- 59:02and Guildenstern duo. Why do you always give me these
- 59:05tongue twisters? I wish that this whole story was
- 59:08just their shenanigans. Dave Rennie says my.
- 59:11Favorite soundtrack in all of Doctor Who, a much softer Dr.
- 59:15Perry relationship, lovely Homes characters Joan Sims and the
- 59:18courtroom setup is very intriguing.
- 59:21All done whilst not. Holmes's best.
- 59:23All of his trademark skills are there to see.
- 59:25Great double axe, well building and witty 1 liners.
- 59:28I love the new theme though. Not so sure now.
- 59:31Too much returning to the courtroom, which makes it seem
- 59:33disjointed, and Penn says it's my.
- 59:35Favorite 6th Doctor adventure, That scene of 6th and Perry
- 59:39bright and colourful in the misty forest, not fighting but
- 59:42faithful bands is beautiful glitz.
- 59:44Dibber, Balazar, great side characters.
- 59:47Glenn score, Bab set design of Mop station.
- 59:50There's so much to love, Andy Parkinson.
- 59:52Lots of fun moments, especially Glitz and Debar Jones Sims,
- 59:56maybe a you. Please not go.
- 59:58Every time you say glitz and debar.
- 1:00:00Wow, glitz is so hot. The robots are completely pants,
- 1:00:03but it's a good start to the season.
- 1:00:05I think you meant Debbar, not. Glitz.
- 1:00:08I know, I know what I said. OK, I.
- 1:00:11Said what I said. OK, Ian Banks says.
- 1:00:15Superb opening shots, The great first episode followed by an OK
- 1:00:19story interrupted by a courtroom drama that made increasingly
- 1:00:22less sense as it went along. Hey, JP, the.
- 1:00:25Trial interjections work really well here, and it's a fine
- 1:00:28enough opener, but it feels like a bit like Hinchcliffe to
- 1:00:31William Shift in tone from the previous season.
- 1:00:34Why is that a bad thing? Dan Follinsworth.
- 1:00:37Said basically finals awardian bickering equals drama is less
- 1:00:41intrusive, subpar Holmes is still good doctor, and the guest
- 1:00:44characters are fun and finally. CSO Fringe says what a bizarre
- 1:00:50decision to go from an incredible motion control effect
- 1:00:52sequence to a standard studio interior, and then not to shoot
- 1:00:57any other planets or ships in the same way again during the
- 1:00:59season. All start with a bang.
- 1:01:02All the money had gone. On that one shot.
- 1:01:05Except that door. In my warp.
- 1:01:08Yeah, the door in the opening. Shot.
- 1:01:10That's it. So, Matt, mysterious planet, yay
- 1:01:15or nay? Well.
- 1:01:17Whereas yours is simple case of sociopathy, Daniel.
- 1:01:20My malaise is much more complex, I I think.
- 1:01:25I think the people who criticize who called out Robert Holmes
- 1:01:30definitely didn't write the trial scenes and he criticized
- 1:01:33the trial. I I could not disagree more.
- 1:01:35I think this is a total 180° from my view of mind warp.
- 1:01:39I think Holmes is loving writing those trial scenes and he makes
- 1:01:43it Gallifrey and Gogglebox. The whole point of this story is
- 1:01:48the trials. It's people watching a typical
- 1:01:51Doctor Who adventure and critiquing and commenting on it
- 1:01:54and having fun because Holmes gets the the reason why JMT and
- 1:02:00say would have decided to do this trial is because Doctor
- 1:02:03Who's come under criticism from the upper echelons of the BBC.
- 1:02:07And so Robert Holmes is making the Time Lords, the upper
- 1:02:11echelons of the BBC, having a bitchy commentary on a Doctor
- 1:02:15Who story. So they say things like I, I
- 1:02:18just love the sort of back and forth, like a certain amount of
- 1:02:21graphic detail is unavoidable. And are these unpleasant scenes
- 1:02:25necessary? So sort of really having a joke
- 1:02:29about their criticisms of the violence in season 22.
- 1:02:32She goes at one point. What is the?
- 1:02:34Relevance of this you can see Michael Grade watching the
- 1:02:36dailies coming in going Oh yeah, what is the relevance to any of
- 1:02:39this? Oh, why did you stop at the?
- 1:02:41Best. Bit.
- 1:02:44That's that's the Andrew. Carmel Remembrance of the
- 1:02:47Daleks. No, Rewind it.
- 1:02:48That's the point of the bloody story.
- 1:02:51So so I. Kind of think if, if, if you
- 1:02:53watch it and you think the trial scenes are getting in the way
- 1:02:55of, of the adventures on Ravalox, you're kind of watching
- 1:02:59it wrong. It's kind of like you should be.
- 1:03:01Ravalox is is a very archetypal Doctor Who story and it's all
- 1:03:06about how the people in the courtroom are reacting to it.
- 1:03:10I took exception a bit about the person who said it's Robert
- 1:03:12Holmes greatest hits, partly because I, I don't necessarily
- 1:03:15think it is, but also since when do people say, oh, the The
- 1:03:19Beatles Red album is rubbish? It's just their greatest hits.
- 1:03:22It's like Robert Holmes if it's bloody's greatest hits, it's
- 1:03:24awesome. Get over it.
- 1:03:26So I quite like the greatest hits.
- 1:03:30I quite I quite like Robert Holmes playing with double acts
- 1:03:33and leaning into what he does really, really well.
- 1:03:37And I think I totally agree with the comments around the robots.
- 1:03:41I think Draftro looks fantastic. I think Nick Mallett's direction
- 1:03:48is pretty good. I think he gets better with
- 1:03:49Paradise Towers and Cursor Fenrick.
- 1:03:51But you you look at some of those Davison stories and the
- 1:03:55way that the monsters are revealed, they just cut.
- 1:03:57They're just kind of there, the camp like you cut to a scene and
- 1:04:00the Silerians are just like standing round a thing having a
- 1:04:04chat or they just like they just wander into shot with no drama
- 1:04:09or whatever. Whereas draft row, there's a
- 1:04:13sort of bit of build up any sort of looms into the shot and it's
- 1:04:17you sort of get the sense that they're trying to make it visual
- 1:04:20and trying to tell this story with more more sort of cinematic
- 1:04:26drama than maybe they they had for the last few years.
- 1:04:29And a lot of the time I think in this one, they they do a pretty
- 1:04:32good job of it. Matt, you remember that time?
- 1:04:34You and I went on that date and you brought that fabulous gold
- 1:04:38lame handbag. Do you remember that?
- 1:04:41Oh yeah, That's when we were walking through the BFI.
- 1:04:43That's the one that I. Think Giraffe is the only person
- 1:04:46that's held up a handbag as eloquently?
- 1:04:49As you have, if I'm honest, do you think it's twinks of the?
- 1:04:53Burkin boyfriend? Absolutely they.
- 1:04:55Are sorry you're making such good points.
- 1:05:01No, I think that's that's. The end of my list, really, I
- 1:05:04think. I think Daniel covered all of my
- 1:05:06other points around this, I think.
- 1:05:09I think it's a good return for the Doctor and Perry.
- 1:05:13I like that they're getting on. If anyone's seen the extended
- 1:05:17bits on the season 23 Blu rays, I'm kind of quite glad they cut
- 1:05:22them very first. Arguing.
- 1:05:24Between them, because it works much more nicely when they're
- 1:05:27already sort of arm in arm and having a wander around the
- 1:05:30woods. I really like that.
- 1:05:33I, I think this one should go through.
- 1:05:35I like it. She's.
- 1:05:37Standing out the Tardis. In that cutscene and she's
- 1:05:39absolutely soaked out she's skin.
- 1:05:42Isn't she and that long shot of the.
- 1:05:45Tardis is so bad for once I went there.
- 1:05:49Get rid of it. Actually, most of them should
- 1:05:51have been cut. Shall I go next, Rod?
- 1:05:53No next. Row, I think Robert Holmes.
- 1:05:56Sums up the Doctor and Perry's relationship absolutely perfect
- 1:06:00with two lines where Perry goes, oh, Doctor, we've got to get out
- 1:06:03of here. And the Doctor goes, you're
- 1:06:05absolutely right here. We must find out what's going on
- 1:06:08here. And that just.
- 1:06:10And then at the end of the story, he sums up the Doctor
- 1:06:12better than Moffitt's 50th anniversary year.
- 1:06:17And any other time they try to sum up the Doctor, the Doctor
- 1:06:19says, I did my best. I only hope it's enough.
- 1:06:23That is the Doctor not this all powerful being, not all this
- 1:06:26bullshit we get in the new series.
- 1:06:28He's trying his best. Daniel, you are so right.
- 1:06:31The dialogue in this story is so good, I forget how good it is.
- 1:06:36I'm going to say the full speech.
- 1:06:37Unfortunately for that, the doctor says to Perry, he goes,
- 1:06:40planets come and go, stars, Paris, matter coalesces, reforms
- 1:06:45into other patterns, other worlds.
- 1:06:47Nothing can be eternal. Doesn't Colin deliver those
- 1:06:51wistful speeches? Do you remember the one Robert
- 1:06:53Holmes gave him in the two Doctors as well?
- 1:06:55So. To buy or every?
- 1:06:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then one at the end.
- 1:07:00Like you said, well, everything in.
- 1:07:01Life has its purpose for Afro, every creature plays its part,
- 1:07:05but the purpose of life is too big to be knowable.
- 1:07:07A million computers couldn't solve that one.
- 1:07:09Yes, this is the big bully doctor that has no moments of
- 1:07:12poetry whatsoever. Gorgeous.
- 1:07:14Shut your. Face Cornell, all right.
- 1:07:15I'm looking at you. But he also writes.
- 1:07:19Very funny lines as well, Glitz and Dipper being the best
- 1:07:22example. Don't try and think about it
- 1:07:24Dipper, you'll give yourself a hernia is a great one.
- 1:07:28An uncanny knack with. Ageing.
- 1:07:29Females Dipper. Be silent.
- 1:07:32Fat 1 I have spread it in the. Flames.
- 1:07:38Many times we go. Forward.
- 1:07:42We didn't mention the the water. People with the book that.
- 1:07:46Was just funny. MO by Dick by.
- 1:07:49Herman Melville. But that wouldn't work, right?
- 1:07:51If you weren't getting Colin's reactions and the last one, HF
- 1:07:54stationary office and he goes, he goes.
- 1:07:59Very funny and he gets another. Brilliant line in the middle of
- 1:08:01the story as well. The doctor, he goes, never
- 1:08:02believe what is said Balazar, only what you know.
- 1:08:06This script is terrific in terms of like line by line.
- 1:08:10It's one of the best scripts we've had in years out of the
- 1:08:1380s in terms of quotable lives. And I genuinely think Collins
- 1:08:17doctor is revolutionized in this story for all the reasons you
- 1:08:19guys said. He's suddenly the hero.
- 1:08:21He runs into the place at the end and goes, Perry, I'm not
- 1:08:24going when there's people to save when in the last season he
- 1:08:27was going Perry, I'm off to murder those people over there
- 1:08:29and then we can go, you know, he's completely turned it
- 1:08:32around. I love him being petulant in the
- 1:08:35court as well. He's terrible.
- 1:08:36He goes not guilty. I am Lord president of
- 1:08:41Gallifrey. He goes, he's like a spoiled
- 1:08:44kid, isn't he? It's so, so funny.
- 1:08:47The scene where he tries to comfort Perry, heartbroken at
- 1:08:49loss of their planet is absolutely gorgeous as well.
- 1:08:53But I think my absolute favorite thing about this story is the
- 1:08:56entire guest cast. And again, I've said it a
- 1:08:59million times, I've strictly come hamster.
- 1:09:00I don't think JNT puts a foot wrong.
- 1:09:04Linda Bellingham. Is in there, Michael?
- 1:09:05Jason Joan Sims Joan Sims. She knows exactly what she's
- 1:09:09doing. Don't listen to people.
- 1:09:11To be fair, she did say in her. Own autobiography.
- 1:09:13She had no idea what that was going on.
- 1:09:15Well, she did well. Neither did Beryl Reed, but
- 1:09:18she's very true. Tony Selby.
- 1:09:20Charming as hell. Adam Blackwood is so cute.
- 1:09:23I love that character. Tom Chadburn is, you know he's
- 1:09:27not exactly doing Duggan, is he? But like Daniel said, he has
- 1:09:30some very moving moments. And obviously Glenn Murphy, we
- 1:09:33all want to lick his asshole. Sorry, not you Daniel, but the
- 1:09:36rest of us do. Yeah, I think.
- 1:09:39And Nick Mallets direction comes in for a lot.
- 1:09:41The people point a cursor Fenrick and say Oh my God, the
- 1:09:44peak of Mick Mallets direction. I think cursor Fenrick is a very
- 1:09:48shortly directed story, I think. Mysterious Planet, it has a lot
- 1:09:53of the same problems, but it's not trying to be this big
- 1:09:56dramatic Horror Story. It's a nice light opener, you
- 1:10:01know, an intriguing mystery to sort of ease us gently into the
- 1:10:04season. And that lightness of touch.
- 1:10:07We didn't have any of that in season 22, maybe Mark of the
- 1:10:09Ronnie, but that's about it. And it's so refreshing.
- 1:10:13It's so nice. So between that, the comedy
- 1:10:15lines, the double axe, the acting, I think it's quite
- 1:10:18wonderful. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching
- 1:10:20it this week. And yeah, I would like this one
- 1:10:23to go through as well. So it's definitely going through
- 1:10:25anyway. I remember I was at the infamous
- 1:10:28Showing up and Optic in 1986 when Part 1 was shown on the big
- 1:10:32screen for 700 Brain Doctor Who fans and we all sat there and
- 1:10:37cheered as the music came up. We cheered when Colin's face
- 1:10:40came up. Oh my God, the model shot at the
- 1:10:43beginning. We were all gas.
- 1:10:44Me. I know where this is going it.
- 1:10:47Then got to the end of the. Episode and you could hear.
- 1:10:53It was very, very muted. At the end, to be fair, Rod, you
- 1:10:56couldn't. Even hear that in the cinema
- 1:10:57where the Empire of Death was screening, you couldn't hear a
- 1:11:00pin drop when I walked out of there.
- 1:11:03Oh yeah, this. Was 800 Doctor Who fans so you
- 1:11:06would expect there to be a little bit more.
- 1:11:08I really don't like mysterious planets, so I'm going to go
- 1:11:11against you guys. I've never been a fan of it.
- 1:11:14Watching it again for this, I just find it awful.
- 1:11:18I'm sorry. This just does not work for me
- 1:11:21on any level. And ironically, the first thing
- 1:11:24I've picked is what you've all picked, but I can't stand it.
- 1:11:27It's the dialogue. The dialogue, you might it's
- 1:11:31torturous. And this is absolutely sorry.
- 1:11:34Oh God. You're a fan of muffins, I can
- 1:11:38see why this decent dialogue is not for you.
- 1:11:40Well, I love Bob. Holmes's usual dialogue, you
- 1:11:43know, he's bought all that rich, beautiful language and carnival
- 1:11:46and talons and some makers. To me here, this is just all,
- 1:11:52not all. No, it's not all.
- 1:11:54The majority is really clumsy and clunky.
- 1:11:58I mean, do I need to point to anything more than the scrap
- 1:12:02yard, the graveyard, the farmyard, the boatyard, the
- 1:12:05knackers yard? It's absolutely painful.
- 1:12:10Is it? The only time that.
- 1:12:11Comes. Back is in part 13, which is
- 1:12:13Holmes as well, so I'm not sure it is.
- 1:12:16It's absolutely. And then we do the same with
- 1:12:18hunker and tundra or handbag and handrail.
- 1:12:22I mean it's just so fucking torturous.
- 1:12:25Oh come on, you must have lied that bit about.
- 1:12:27The doctor's name, where he goes.
- 1:12:28I could stay here and write a thesis.
- 1:12:30Ancient Life on Revox by Doctor and then Perry did it better
- 1:12:34than series. 7 didn't it? No.
- 1:12:37No, I mean, this is doctor, doctors off the screen for 18
- 1:12:41months. This is the big comeback.
- 1:12:43Rather fantastic model shot to start with.
- 1:12:46The trial scene looks a little bit ropey, but then within 2
- 1:12:49seconds that we've got a camera just not moving, pointing at
- 1:12:53Tony Selby trying to say whereas yours is a simple case of
- 1:12:57sociopathy, Dibber, my malaise is much more complex.
- 1:13:00A deep rooted maladjustment, my psychiatrist said, brought on by
- 1:13:03an infantile inability to come to terms with the more pertinent
- 1:13:06concrete aspects of life. It's anxious if you want to.
- 1:13:10Slow. Anything down and just steal,
- 1:13:12anything dead just be. So he cannot sell that, he says,
- 1:13:16he says on the commentary. He loves that dialogue.
- 1:13:20He doesn't show it. It's just so flat and dull.
- 1:13:24And didn't you want the only fools?
- 1:13:26And horses in space with glitz and dipper.
- 1:13:28After he said that line. I did.
- 1:13:29No, I absolutely didn't. And then the conversation about
- 1:13:33the three holy books. It's just I find so much the
- 1:13:37language find it painful. The extended sequence of Joe,
- 1:13:42you just did it the the tribe deciding which way to go.
- 1:13:45Do we go forward or that's how Rick Saywood adding in a bit of
- 1:13:48padding, which he admits it's horrendous.
- 1:13:51So we've moved from Kinder and him adding.
- 1:13:53Padding in then oh, the dialogue is.
- 1:13:56My first one, the second one, Joe, again, you've just talked
- 1:13:59about the direction. I think the direction is so
- 1:14:01flat. It just doesn't give any lift or
- 1:14:04dynamism or atmosphere. It's very, it's not very
- 1:14:06different. From Curse of Henry at all.
- 1:14:08Well, we'll argue that one. Out but just think of that
- 1:14:10stoning sequence, the end of episode good one that just comes
- 1:14:13out of absolutely no. Why are they suddenly stoning
- 1:14:16him in in the middle of a a subterranean corridor that's
- 1:14:20brightly lit? Have you seen it?
- 1:14:22Fucking annoying rod. I'd grab a stone and stone just
- 1:14:25shot in the most pedestrian. Why you wonder why, Why it's
- 1:14:28there? And then the L1 robot, I mean
- 1:14:31the way it bursts into the heart and the Doctor helps himself on
- 1:14:34to it to hold him, that robot so much.
- 1:14:37He starts bumming it when it's tied up to it.
- 1:14:38It's. Just.
- 1:14:40Terrible. The scenes where Grell is
- 1:14:43stalking Morden in the corridor, I mean the first shot he's
- 1:14:47listening to Morden and Balasar telling each of you know you can
- 1:14:50go out to the surface and all you can see is Grell in the
- 1:14:53background. He's like fucking Mrs. Overall
- 1:14:55in Acorn Antiques because you could just see his head there
- 1:14:58hovering, listening to the whole thing.
- 1:15:00Subtlety, this is not. I realise I'm being contrary.
- 1:15:02Now, but you would have to sort of eliminate the entirety of 62
- 1:15:06if that's an issue for you, because I think it's in every
- 1:15:09single story. So Blake and.
- 1:15:12Then the crowning glory that you've obviously all chosen.
- 1:15:15Not to mention the big action set sequence in episode 4 where
- 1:15:20they go into the food preparation sequence and they
- 1:15:23just stand there while some laser bolts actually pass
- 1:15:27through them. They hit them every bloody time.
- 1:15:30No one falls over. The camera wobbles a little bit
- 1:15:33and then they burst out and a bit of gunk falls on Balazar's
- 1:15:36head like it's out of Noah's house party.
- 1:15:38You'll forget where. Where they all press a load of
- 1:15:41buttons. That is really exciting.
- 1:15:44It's. Anthony Amy Button.
- 1:15:45Pressing from Lagopoulos, the direction is terrible.
- 1:15:49What about when they when? They run through the woods and
- 1:15:52ask the cameras following them and you know, that's quite
- 1:15:55exciting, unlike those. Stationary car cameras and I
- 1:15:58didn't mention that bit. That's the.
- 1:15:59Him of all. Slowly come towards it.
- 1:16:01I quite like that bit Daniel. And then my.
- 1:16:05Crowning argument is the premise.
- 1:16:09There's just such a. Lack of thought of what they're
- 1:16:11trying to achieve there. This is intended to show the
- 1:16:14worst of the Doctor's actions, and yeah, it's probably the most
- 1:16:18vanilla storyline we're possibly going to get.
- 1:16:20Even the Doctor takes the piss out of it and says, is this the
- 1:16:22best you can do? But we're told the reason for
- 1:16:25its inclusion is that the Doctor starts the whole chain of
- 1:16:28events. Bollocks, He doesn't.
- 1:16:31The whole chain of events are set off by Glitz blowing up the
- 1:16:34black light converter. But that was going to happen
- 1:16:36irrespective of the Doctor being there, so it makes no sense.
- 1:16:39Roddy goes if that's all the. Muck you can rake up.
- 1:16:42Wake me up when you're finished. And I agree with him.
- 1:16:44You're so right. Mission statement for the season
- 1:16:47and then the worst. Worst bit, it comes back again
- 1:16:50in the in the two-part finale. They say the reason they're
- 1:16:53showing this is because or the reason they're doing this is to
- 1:16:56kind of cover up what the Time Lord's been up to with Earth
- 1:16:59slash Revlon. So why do they, if this is what
- 1:17:02they're trying to cover up, why do they use this as the evidence
- 1:17:05then why do they bleep out the bit of matrix so badly?
- 1:17:08So you see Tony Selby say the matrix.
- 1:17:12I have an answer for you. Would you like your?
- 1:17:14Attention to that. I have an answer for you.
- 1:17:16Go on. Well, spoilers, everybody.
- 1:17:18The Valiard is, in fact, the Doctor, but an evil version of
- 1:17:21the Doctor. Yeah, so he wants to fuck over
- 1:17:23the Time Lords and the Doctor. So it's like, right.
- 1:17:26I'm going to use this dreadful bit of history from the Time
- 1:17:29Lords past as part of my evidence to bring.
- 1:17:31No one gives a shit about it and.
- 1:17:33It's only these fusty old Time Lords that know about it that
- 1:17:35are watching it. That makes no sense.
- 1:17:37But it. Doesn't make any.
- 1:17:38Sense. They're just showing it to a
- 1:17:40crowd of. People who know what's going on
- 1:17:42but maybe intrigue the. Doctor enough to investigate it?
- 1:17:46Well, he didn't intrigue me. Enough, Matt, That's all I'm
- 1:17:48saying. It reminds me a little bit of
- 1:17:50those. You know, say, of sowing the
- 1:17:52seeds in those Moffett seasons and then they're not paying them
- 1:17:55off again. You've always got to try.
- 1:17:56To get nothing time is just kind of makes no sense.
- 1:18:01And then they tease us. Intriguing, don't you?
- 1:18:03Think. Well, I'll tell you what is
- 1:18:04intriguing. I'll tell you what I'm going to
- 1:18:07we don't. But what is intriguing is when
- 1:18:09they say that when Glitz and dip or Glitz says they've got all
- 1:18:13these matrix secrets and they're going to be sold across time and
- 1:18:16space, we think, wow. So we're going to say like the
- 1:18:18illegal dangerous use of time law technology.
- 1:18:21That's going to be fascinating. And we never see or hear from it
- 1:18:24again. So.
- 1:18:28It's it's in that. Series of.
- 1:18:30Amazing twists and the ultimate phone that never happened.
- 1:18:32Bang Bang. Bang, Bang, bang.
- 1:18:34So sorry, this one. For me is definitely out.
- 1:18:37Sorry, mysterious plants. It's a billion to one.
- 1:18:39Chance that there was a place called Marble Arch on Revlon
- 1:18:44rod. Oh, it should have been.
- 1:18:46Firebombed for good? No what?
- 1:18:49Sorry, but it is going. Through it is, going through it
- 1:18:51is. Going through may we continue my
- 1:18:54time. We may empty bang.
- 1:18:56Very good. Thank you, Daniel.
- 1:18:58Matt. Daniel, would you like to go to
- 1:19:01the second lot of viewers comments whilst I calm down from
- 1:19:05my rounds do? You want to start Daniel?
- 1:19:10So. OK, so Dan Pin says.
- 1:19:14First watched it when that gorgeous VHS TARDIS tin came out
- 1:19:18and fell in love with it. Don't understand all the hate.
- 1:19:20Colin is superb, softer with a twinkle in his eye yet still
- 1:19:24bombastic. I wish we had more time with
- 1:19:26Sixy and Mel. One of my comfort watches.
- 1:19:32Nathan Bottomley says oh, he's he's not pulling his punches.
- 1:19:37A fucking mess. The framing device is bafflingly
- 1:19:41undercooked after such a long lead up.
- 1:19:43Holmes writes episodes one to four in his sleep, Episodes 5 to
- 1:19:478 are indefensibly misogynist, episodes 9 to 12 are delightful,
- 1:19:51and the two-part finale doesn't even aspire to making the
- 1:19:55slightest bit of sense. But still, I somehow love it.
- 1:19:58Except for that. Of course he does contrary gift.
- 1:20:05Brendan. Jones says despite the Time Lord
- 1:20:07heavy framing device, this is a push to make Doctor Who more
- 1:20:10modern story arcs, character introspection, personal stakes,
- 1:20:14monsters and villains with interesting motivations.
- 1:20:17It has problems, but everyone's trying hard.
- 1:20:20Collins at the height of his powers, but the trial scenes
- 1:20:23need more interesting direction as it's such a static set.
- 1:20:26Sorry Brendan, but that sounds. So oh, everyone's trying.
- 1:20:32Doesn't sound like the most glowing reference, does there?
- 1:20:35There are quite a lot of backward.
- 1:20:36Compliments in this? Yeah, I think so.
- 1:20:38I think so. Glenn Fitzgerald says a good.
- 1:20:40Season overall but could do without the jumping backwards
- 1:20:42and forwards in and out of the stories.
- 1:20:45Wouldn't really be a trial then though would it Glenn?
- 1:20:47It would just be like 4 stories. That's what he wants.
- 1:20:51He must have loved it when that Blu-ray came out.
- 1:20:54Si Hart. Says aged 11.
- 1:20:56I was so excited Doctor Who was coming back.
- 1:20:59The credit started and I had my first time commenting.
- 1:21:01It wasn't as good as it used to be.
- 1:21:04Although I've mellowed as I've got older and like it more now.
- 1:21:06We desperately needed something bigger and better in 1986.
- 1:21:10Where were the Daleks and Cybermen?
- 1:21:12Well, SI, Daleks, Cybermen, they're all in the nursery
- 1:21:16compared to us. Keep going with that quote.
- 1:21:20Go on. The lovely Jim Sangster Monster
- 1:21:24Maker says. The first time in my fan life I
- 1:21:26felt that down. Oh, lucky you, Jim.
- 1:21:30I could say that. They should have played to the
- 1:21:33show's strengths, not focused on its weaknesses.
- 1:21:38Matt Dennis says. It's rough around the edges, but
- 1:21:41it's 80s Doctor Who at its most innovative and daring.
- 1:21:44If it were made today, it would be water cooler TV thanks to the
- 1:21:47ongoing mysteries, the excellent character character development,
- 1:21:51and some of the most shocking cliffhangers ever.
- 1:21:54Darren McKay. Says the season that properly
- 1:21:57made me a fan, so I'm decidedly biased.
- 1:22:00Presumably against it in all of the the joy of seeing the Doctor
- 1:22:05return, the utter shock of what happens to Perry, the concept
- 1:22:09and design of the Vervoids, the tiny whiminess of Mel's story,
- 1:22:13Joe the Valliard revelation, and the theme, she got a lift.
- 1:22:19From a gringo, that's all you need to know.
- 1:22:24Mark Harrison. Says the self absorbed clip show
- 1:22:27format doesn't quite write Doctor Who's death warrant, but
- 1:22:30necessitates a change going forward.
- 1:22:32Still, if the show is doing the case for the defense Mind Warp
- 1:22:36has learnt from Season 22 and Vervoids is a pitch reel for
- 1:22:39Season 24, it isn't a clip. Show.
- 1:22:41What is that comment all about? These are original stories we're
- 1:22:44watching. If it was a clip show it would
- 1:22:46be fucking Shades of Grey from Star Trek The Next Generation
- 1:22:49Series 2 necessitates. A change going forward implies
- 1:22:53so just like every season was going to be a trial.
- 1:22:58What would? Paradise.
- 1:22:59Towers be evidence the need to manage your guest cars.
- 1:23:05Rex Raoul A really strong season.
- 1:23:08I just wish the trial sequences had a little more bite.
- 1:23:13OK eh Tapalak an all time favorite, but it's definitely
- 1:23:18greater than the sum of its parts.
- 1:23:20Vervoids is probably my favorite segment, but Trial really does
- 1:23:23have to be taken as a whole. Philip R Clark.
- 1:23:28Make sure it doesn't get confused.
- 1:23:29With Arthur C the season that made me a fan.
- 1:23:32Joan Simms death shocked me as a child.
- 1:23:35It shocked me because she was great as Mrs. Wembley.
- 1:23:37It's really sad when she died. Mel is a breath of fresh air and
- 1:23:41works better when written by Pip and Jane than Holmes where she
- 1:23:45spouts cliches. The Valleyard revelation was
- 1:23:48amazing. Shame it's never been followed
- 1:23:50up. That's who she is a bit.
- 1:23:53Stupid, isn't she, when she's written by that trial was an
- 1:23:56illusion. Thanks, Mel.
- 1:24:00Awfully evil. Now we're getting the dirt.
- 1:24:03We haven't even got the. Pivot Shane yet?
- 1:24:05We've got the best to come, Charlie.
- 1:24:08Barnes says nothing short of a miracle that it hangs together.
- 1:24:12Collins on top form the Valley odds a great addition and the
- 1:24:15guest cast is superb. A good idea at the wrong time.
- 1:24:20And Lucy McCall. Says Michael.
- 1:24:22Jason had one of the best evil laughs ever, which I think
- 1:24:27Daniel has. Promised us he's going to give
- 1:24:28his own rendition of Lucy this is for you I'm.
- 1:24:37A bit turned on, it doesn't sound much, does it?
- 1:24:41Joe, thank you. Daniel, I tried.
- 1:24:45Joe, I think. I ought to hand over to you for
- 1:24:46your love for trial. You pick your story of the final
- 1:24:49two. I think I know which way you're
- 1:24:51going to go. Terror of the Verboids by Pip
- 1:24:55and Jane Baker. Yes.
- 1:24:58OK Well, as with every story this season, Colin Baker's
- 1:25:02Doctor reign supreme here. And I think this is probably the
- 1:25:05Doctor that Colin would have liked to have played all along.
- 1:25:09You know the jokes at his expense when he's on the
- 1:25:12exercise by pulling the flowers out of his cope with Janet and
- 1:25:15being all charming, authoritative when he needs to
- 1:25:18be investigating the mystery left, right and center.
- 1:25:21Actually having a relationship with one of his old friends from
- 1:25:24his past for once. It's a wonderful tone.
- 1:25:27Pip and Jane Baker always said, I think we talked about this
- 1:25:29before, Matt, about they plant the doctor right in the centre
- 1:25:34of the story. And Jane Baker, who is a
- 1:25:37formidable force, may I say, on the commentary, says, you know,
- 1:25:41I watched that story, that Dalek story of you and you and
- 1:25:45Nicholas spent on a whole episode walking around a wall.
- 1:25:48She goes, well, I was kept waiting for you to join the
- 1:25:50story. No, she goes, Colleen needs to
- 1:25:52be right in the middle. And that's exactly what they do.
- 1:25:56Yeah. Just everything that Colin does
- 1:25:57in his story is effectively the blueprint for what Big Finish
- 1:26:00take when they go forward, you know, And he's just charming and
- 1:26:05lovely and watchable and funny. And if we'd have started on this
- 1:26:08foot, maybe things would have been a lot different for this
- 1:26:11doctor. My favorite bit with Colin's
- 1:26:15doctor in this is how he goes into confront Dolan at the end
- 1:26:19of the story and makes it look like he's absolutely stupid and
- 1:26:24he's got the the common waiting outside.
- 1:26:26So it's it's like it's almost trout and esque in how he allows
- 1:26:30himself to look really silly. And actually he's fought through
- 1:26:33the whole situation. They do a great job with him.
- 1:26:35I love how he looks at the Vervoys from a very alien
- 1:26:37perspective as well and says, you know what the human beings
- 1:26:41do with plants. It's it's overdone because the
- 1:26:44whole story is overdone, but it is thoughtful and it is giving
- 1:26:47the doctor an unusual way of looking at things, which is
- 1:26:50really, really nice. And at the end of the story, you
- 1:26:52know when the Vervoys are all sort of.
- 1:26:55Promoting away into their joggers.
- 1:26:57He puts his arm around Mel. He's got a like right in his
- 1:27:00chest. You know, he's holding her
- 1:27:01clothes. Thank you.
- 1:27:03In a in a way that he probably should have done with Perry a
- 1:27:05bit more often. There's a a feeling that they're
- 1:27:08equals in this. Well, I think Mel might be in
- 1:27:10charge, actually. Everyone is.
- 1:27:13It's wonderful. It's a great sick doctor in
- 1:27:15this. And, you know, it's the last
- 1:27:16story he did. So how sad that this is.
- 1:27:19This is where we say goodbye to him.
- 1:27:21Of course, my second reason is some of the most Florida over
- 1:27:25the top and enjoyable dialogue you've ever heard in your life.
- 1:27:28Forgive me for the quotes in this episode, but there's so
- 1:27:30much great stuff. If I seem to lack gratitude,
- 1:27:33young woman, it's because on the previous occasions the doctor's
- 1:27:36path crossed mine, I found myself involved in a web of
- 1:27:39mayhem and intrigue. Oh no, listen to this one, my
- 1:27:43dear Melanie. If you wish to pursue this
- 1:27:44completely arbitrary course, pray.
- 1:27:46Hurry along to the hydroponic center and leave me to my static
- 1:27:50and solitary peregrinations. You want to talk about a
- 1:27:54mouthful Jesus Christ? We all like a.
- 1:27:57Mouthful show, even though I haven't had that many in my.
- 1:27:59Mouth Jesus, of course the classics.
- 1:28:02The crimes we're committing in the name of science will make us
- 1:28:05infamous. Are we to be subjected to more
- 1:28:08chicanery, sagacity? Like these are not words that
- 1:28:11belong together in a sentence. And somehow JNT assembles a
- 1:28:16stellar cast of actors that can turn this this verbal tripe into
- 1:28:22Shakespeare. And it's just wonderful.
- 1:28:24Watching on a black man show sort of choke out these lines is
- 1:28:28just a joy. I love everything about this
- 1:28:30story. I love the murder mystery.
- 1:28:32I love the fact that that the plot elements Parlon and on and
- 1:28:36on and on and on. And then in episode 4, people
- 1:28:39that say it doesn't make sense, go watch that episode again.
- 1:28:42Every single thing is ticked off and it all makes perfect sense.
- 1:28:46But come Episode 3, you know, we've got a mountain that we're
- 1:28:49holding up that we need to try and sort out.
- 1:28:51But they do it brilliantly. I love the compost tape, I love
- 1:28:56Mel going to the pulveriser, I love Ruth Baxter screaming.
- 1:28:59I love the Eye of the Black Hole of Tartarus.
- 1:29:02I love Janet being the main suspect, and I'm still convinced
- 1:29:06that bitch did it. You know, the second her and the
- 1:29:08Commodore walked off, she shoved an axe right in his back.
- 1:29:11I was like I got away with him. I love Honour Blackman slumming
- 1:29:15it in her tracksuit. I love that little biscuit
- 1:29:17that's half covered in chocolate.
- 1:29:19I love the Megarians being killed by acid in their faces or
- 1:29:22Rudge being a squalid criminal. I love the thorns in the hands.
- 1:29:26I love Cabin 6 and Cabin 9. I love Bonnie's exercises in the
- 1:29:30TARDIS. I love the electric fence.
- 1:29:32I love the POV shots. I love the brilliant
- 1:29:35cliffhangers. I fucking love Terror of the
- 1:29:37Vervoids. Please, can we put this through?
- 1:29:39Will you stop sitting on the? Fence Joe, do you like it or
- 1:29:42not? For Christ, it is one of.
- 1:29:45The most outright entertaining stories of the 1980s.
- 1:29:48After all of that serious, boring machismo we had from
- 1:29:52Saywood, You know, like finally he's fucking pissed off and
- 1:29:56we're getting Doctor Who. That's quite fun.
- 1:29:58Let's keep it. It's great fun this.
- 1:30:01Let's go to the comments. Luke Sims, Jenkins says from
- 1:30:03worst companion exit to worst companion intro voice has a lame
- 1:30:08looking spaceship interior and vagina plants, a captain who
- 1:30:12plays it way too straight, and a bonkers plot.
- 1:30:15Fuck, it's fun. Keep it.
- 1:30:16I think there's going to be a lot of this.
- 1:30:18David Gillespie Pratt This is how the 6th Doctor should have
- 1:30:21been. Brash, loud, but funny and
- 1:30:23charming. Bonnie makes a great debut and
- 1:30:26great to have a companion who enjoys being with the Doctor.
- 1:30:29It's also got the legendary on a black man, so it's the best of
- 1:30:32the year. Jack Hoyer says a.
- 1:30:33Decent murder mystery with a proactive, inquisitive Dr.
- 1:30:36Whatever one may say about Pip and Jane, they know how to frame
- 1:30:39the doctor as a child's hero. Here he takes on the detective
- 1:30:42role Tom Baker mastered, accompanied by Bonnie Langford,
- 1:30:45who, a few screams aside, is excellent.
- 1:30:48But, and this is in your future doctor, use something else all
- 1:30:52done that says I. Love it, it's in my top ten.
- 1:30:55I love a murder mystery and Colin is at his peak here.
- 1:30:58Bonnie is effervescent, a go getter and wants to be there.
- 1:31:02Great monsters in the verb always, even if they look
- 1:31:04dubious. Great guest cast.
- 1:31:06Pip and James best effort. Oh yes, same time with the
- 1:31:10Ronnie comes along, of course, James Larks says.
- 1:31:12It's a bit hokey, like Doctor Who would be if it was written
- 1:31:16as a stage play by Francis Durbridge in 1948, or if the
- 1:31:20sense writes have been taken as a blueprint for the series.
- 1:31:24But yeah, Colin's having fun and it moves along at a lick.
- 1:31:27Perfectly enjoyable. Jason Thompson, A.
- 1:31:30Decent score story, but rather Hanford by the trial.
- 1:31:33Nobody in the court finds it odd that the Doctor apparently shows
- 1:31:36himself smashing the comms room in his own defence.
- 1:31:38I think that one might have been inserted by the Valley art.
- 1:31:41Also, his defence of a direct request from the Commodore comes
- 1:31:45after three episodes of the Commodore exploiting his
- 1:31:48tendency to get involved, the very thing he's supposed to be
- 1:31:51defending himself against. I can absolutely hear Jason
- 1:31:54Thompson saying everyone. Bless you Jason, Dan
- 1:31:57Hollingsworth said veteran's try less Blu-ray form.
- 1:32:01Mal annoyed me at the time, but adult me appreciated that we
- 1:32:04finally have a companion who wants to be there.
- 1:32:06Those Vervoy designs are iconic, but probably not in the way they
- 1:32:10intended. Paul Cresser, my.
- 1:32:12Favorite segment? The only story that can and does
- 1:32:14stand on its own mirrors a nice piece of traditional Doctor Who.
- 1:32:18The Vervoids may look a bit suspect to adult me, but I
- 1:32:21remember friends who didn't particularly like Doctor Who
- 1:32:24loving them at the time. Big orange Michael.
- 1:32:27Says the Baker's return with a story that feels like it wants
- 1:32:29to be robots of death with plants or Agatha Christie on a
- 1:32:32starliner. I'll admit, my young self found
- 1:32:35Janik kind of attractive. Oh, hello.
- 1:32:39I'm not sure. What this says?
- 1:32:40About me? Well, at least you weren't
- 1:32:41finding the Vervoids attractive. That would have been probably
- 1:32:44slightly more worrying. Keep it.
- 1:32:46I think Dylar Reece would have a.
- 1:32:47Go at a vervoid you. Know he probably would.
- 1:32:50Andy Parkinson. A whodunnit with phallic plants,
- 1:32:53a star tone from Olive Blackman and lots of the twists and
- 1:32:56turns. Hugely enjoyable and probably
- 1:32:58the best of the season. Keep it.
- 1:33:00Oh my God, I love the love Donald also shows.
- 1:33:03That the Bakers were the writers of the era that got the tone of
- 1:33:05the show better than anyone, even if they often veer to CBBC
- 1:33:09in constructing their mystery. Michael Storm, Pip.
- 1:33:12And Jane returns sanity to proceedings.
- 1:33:14Who would have thought a a good story, well told with an
- 1:33:18engaging Dr. And like why do? You give me.
- 1:33:22These tongue twisters. A good story told well with the
- 1:33:26Doctor. Engaging and likeable.
- 1:33:28Actually, that's a tongue twister.
- 1:33:29Simple. Sentence.
- 1:33:30The mystery is complex enough. To entertain the kids, but not
- 1:33:33too complex for jaded adults. And we have Kathy Gale.
- 1:33:36Dave Rennie says so. Much fun fun fun.
- 1:33:39I'm at it now. Fun.
- 1:33:41What's fun? So much fun, plucky mail,
- 1:33:44charming Dr. and Lasky being Moody in her tracksuit.
- 1:33:47Lots of memorable, quotable dialogue.
- 1:33:49This one makes me smile. Definitely keep John Bensalia.
- 1:33:53Superficially enjoyable but strangely anemic.
- 1:33:56John if he looking monsters a swallowed a dictionary script.
- 1:33:59That's what's great about it. Half assed direction no means
- 1:34:03the potentials wasted. No, it isn't that we are doing
- 1:34:06it splendidly. Line makes the verve voice sound
- 1:34:09like WWI World War One. Old biddy's selling.
- 1:34:13Scones and a fate. Ian Banks has a decent.
- 1:34:18Story with an OK script, but it's let down by the setting
- 1:34:21which is the most deserted and dimly lit cruise liner in the
- 1:34:24universe. Bonnie gives a great performance
- 1:34:26and shows a streak of independence as well as
- 1:34:28friendship with the Doctor. Has he forgotten that cruise?
- 1:34:31Liner and Nightmare of Eden. Comparison.
- 1:34:34This is high luxury. Paul Smy finally says.
- 1:34:38Probably my favorite of the season, which a lot of people
- 1:34:40have said. The cliffhangers past 9 and 10
- 1:34:43are two of the best ever Gruesome's deaths.
- 1:34:45Excellent guest cast and an excellent debut for Bonnie.
- 1:34:48The recent new special edition is also a must watch.
- 1:34:52Fantastic. OK, Terror of the Vervoids.
- 1:34:56It's not my favorite of the season because I think I've
- 1:34:58clearly established that's mind war, but I don't know how people
- 1:35:01dislike this. I think this is great rollicking
- 1:35:05fun. I agree with you, Joe Everything
- 1:35:07adds up, everything makes sense. I actually like Pip and Jane's
- 1:35:11dialogue. I think it's got a rhythm and a
- 1:35:13tone to it, and because it's consistent, everyone's spouting
- 1:35:16that same dialogue. It kind of feels on track.
- 1:35:19It's not just one character being overly verbose, the whole
- 1:35:23thing just fits together. I'm going to pick as my three
- 1:35:25reasons over the 3 cliffhangers is the thing.
- 1:35:27They all do slightly different things.
- 1:35:28They show different aspects of story.
- 1:35:30So the first one, as if anybody needs reminding, is where Mel
- 1:35:34into the hydroponic sensor, Edwards opens the gate, gets
- 1:35:38electrocuted for for his for helping her and sets off a
- 1:35:41wonderful chain reaction of sparks and flames.
- 1:35:44Bonnie is screaming in the key of F.
- 1:35:47So it goes into the end titles. And you know what?
- 1:35:49Loads of people over the years use that as a real cheap way of
- 1:35:53criticizing Bonnie saying, oh, she brings his screaming and
- 1:35:56she's very 1960s. I think that's absolute
- 1:35:59bollocks. And I haven't watched the
- 1:36:00previous 25 minutes because, yeah, Bonnie hasn't had a proper
- 1:36:04introduction. She hasn't got any sort of back
- 1:36:05story. Excuse me 40. 34445 Not really a
- 1:36:10back story though is that? No, but I mean, we don't know
- 1:36:13her back. We don't know her history.
- 1:36:15She's just suddenly there. But I think she does enough in
- 1:36:18that 25 minutes to warrant and to earn getting the cliffhanger
- 1:36:22because she does so much. You know, she's so enthusiastic.
- 1:36:26She's so she's got energy, she's got life positivity, she's got a
- 1:36:31wonderful natural charm and energy and charisma with Colin,
- 1:36:34which is absolutely important. So yeah, I think she absolutely
- 1:36:37earns it. And it's only cliffhanger this
- 1:36:39whole season. That's not a close up of Colin's
- 1:36:41nose and it goes to Bonnie, who's just started.
- 1:36:44So good on that. But you know what, people hated
- 1:36:47this at the time. A certain Mr. Chipnall went on
- 1:36:50open air at the time to criticize Pip and Jane for this
- 1:36:52particular story. So maybe that's where my
- 1:36:54particular is towards Mr. Jane are looking down on.
- 1:36:57Him now and they've had the last laugh, haven't they?
- 1:37:00Just Mr. Levine, whose name should not be mentioned, was
- 1:37:03absolutely incandescent. He was up in arms.
- 1:37:06DWB were launching attacks, really personal attacks against
- 1:37:10Bonnie and Giant say. I watched Episode 9 live at
- 1:37:13Liverpool Convention, where the consensus was, yeah, the episode
- 1:37:17was pretty good, but Bonnie was absolutely terrible.
- 1:37:20That was just the prejudice and the baggage that she brought to
- 1:37:22the show. But I think she's wonderful.
- 1:37:25I don't know why people don't like her.
- 1:37:27I think it's a classic cliffhanger.
- 1:37:29And I think she absolutely earns her place as a companion.
- 1:37:32I mean people that were worried she.
- 1:37:33Was going to be a bit too perky, you know that when she first
- 1:37:36comes out as hard and goes, come on, Doctor, come on, hurry.
- 1:37:39You know, it's like I can see why people are going.
- 1:37:41Oh, dear. But no, Yeah, she's she dives
- 1:37:44into this mystery. Our 10 cliffhanger.
- 1:37:48Doctor Mel break into the isolation, isolation room even,
- 1:37:53and discover the mutated Ruth Baxter.
- 1:37:56First of all, I love the way before we get to that, Colin and
- 1:37:59Bonnie stand outside in the corridor and talk about how
- 1:38:01they're going to get in. And then just completely
- 1:38:03spontaneously, without warning, Colin just grabs that axe and
- 1:38:06breaks the fire alarm and sends everyone.
- 1:38:09There's just something about it that's just so off the cuff.
- 1:38:11It almost feels like he's it's an adlet.
- 1:38:14It's such a doctorish moment and it's silly, but it really makes
- 1:38:17me smile. And of course that whole kind of
- 1:38:19roof sub roof subplot doesn't really go anywhere at all.
- 1:38:23We don't see her again after this until she gets murdered in
- 1:38:25episode 12. But you know, it's a wonderfully
- 1:38:28Barber image with all the veins pulsing over her face gives us a
- 1:38:31great Cliff anger. And again, you know what?
- 1:38:33It shows Colin again at his best different side of him.
- 1:38:36Because whilst Bonnie is screaming away of the pulsating
- 1:38:39veins, Colin sits down really calmly and he makes complete eye
- 1:38:44contact with Ruth Baxter and he takes a hand and he shows caring
- 1:38:48and compassion and it's just a throwaway moment.
- 1:38:50He doesn't get a line there because he gets bundled out
- 1:38:52before anything. But Colin is just giving it his
- 1:38:55all and really thinking how his doctor will behave.
- 1:38:58So again, shows us far more time than just the bluster.
- 1:39:02And finally, part 11 cliffhanger.
- 1:39:05This again doesn't end where it should do.
- 1:39:07It should be on the close up of Bruckner, his face illuminated
- 1:39:10by the wonderful red glow of the black hole.
- 1:39:13Joe, has your face ever been illuminated by a red glow of a
- 1:39:15black hole? No, but I have declared.
- 1:39:18That I'm about to enter the eye of the black hole of Tartarus
- 1:39:20I'm sure you have on. More than one occasion.
- 1:39:24But you know what we don't get that.
- 1:39:25We get a very anticlimactic close up on Colin instead,
- 1:39:29which, yeah, look, it's one of the flaws of the season.
- 1:39:31They are trying to sell Colin as the Doctor and it's one of the
- 1:39:35times they they overdo it. But what I absolutely will
- 1:39:37defend is that black hole subplot because you could think,
- 1:39:41oh, it's a bit like the Ruth Baxter thing.
- 1:39:42It doesn't really go anywhere. It's just there to create a bit
- 1:39:45of extra jeopardy. But you know what?
- 1:39:48The fact that they've introduced that black hole subplot means
- 1:39:51that allows them to put everyone in place in the right place for
- 1:39:54Part 4. Because it's Bruckner's actions
- 1:39:57in trying to, you know, send the ship into the black hole that
- 1:40:00make the Verve voice come out of hiding.
- 1:40:02It spurs them to take direct action.
- 1:40:04It forces the Megarian and Rudge Plot out into the open.
- 1:40:08It separates the Megarians. So it's really cleverly plotted
- 1:40:11that they put all these bits and places they know how to plot.
- 1:40:15Something they really do because they.
- 1:40:17Say you can look at it and just say OK, it doesn't go anywhere
- 1:40:19because it's quickly solved. But no, they've manoeuvred
- 1:40:23everyone so that we're coming up to the finale and everyone is in
- 1:40:26the right place. So I think they don't get the
- 1:40:28credit for the clever plotting that they do.
- 1:40:30So also as well, Rod, I think they.
- 1:40:32We definitely talked about this now when we did time in Irani.
- 1:40:35They remember the kids. So yeah, I've, I've seen adults
- 1:40:38recently appraised terror the verve and go, well, you can
- 1:40:40clearly see he's zeroing in on the eye of the black hole of
- 1:40:44Tartarus. And then they mentioned it three
- 1:40:46times before the cliffhanger. But there's like 4 year olds
- 1:40:49watching, you know, that might not get it.
- 1:40:51Or the bit earlier where the, the guy didn't switch on his
- 1:40:53translator. We go back and we do it again
- 1:40:56and the, the, you know, the kids that saw it would be like, oh,
- 1:40:58wow, I saw that because it didn't go in.
- 1:41:00Oh, OK, That's what's going on. Like there are younger people
- 1:41:03than the Dwas watching this show at the time, you know?
- 1:41:07And it's worth remembering those kids.
- 1:41:09I'm not sure whether kids. Would have understood simply a
- 1:41:11bromide because I've still no idea what the hell that means
- 1:41:14grabbing their dictionaries. To find out they're grabbing
- 1:41:17their world. Sorry.
- 1:41:18Oh, dictionaries. So yeah, I love the three kind
- 1:41:21of hangers. I love the whole story.
- 1:41:22I think it's great, great rollicking fun.
- 1:41:25It's a return to quite traditional but good, solid
- 1:41:29Doctor Who. Now I want to hear our two
- 1:41:31guests. Tear it to pieces.
- 1:41:33Let's go to. Daniel.
- 1:41:35First, OK, so we mentioned, yeah, a lot of people
- 1:41:40complaining that that Oh well, we don't see the the Doctor and
- 1:41:45Mel meet and we're kind of dropped in the middle of the
- 1:41:47story and that's what I like about it.
- 1:41:49It's the, the, the fact that it, it gives you that feel of you're
- 1:41:53turning on the TV and, oh, look, Doctor Who's on and there's the
- 1:41:576th Doctor and he's got a new companion.
- 1:41:59And we've just met her and she's fun.
- 1:42:01She's perky, she's full of energy.
- 1:42:04She she's resourceful too. I mean, Mel gets a lot to do in
- 1:42:07this story. And and you know, as you said,
- 1:42:10Rob, the, all the, the people just saying, oh, she screams.
- 1:42:13And that's the the scream that leads into the cliffhanger.
- 1:42:16And that's, it is, of course, you know, not true.
- 1:42:19I mean, she gets so much to do. And I love that.
- 1:42:22Yeah, as, as I think Joe said at the end, they're so that he, her
- 1:42:25and Colin are so sort of tender together.
- 1:42:27Where, you know, the the the danger's over and he sort of
- 1:42:32yeah, he hugs her, you know, which is a yeah, it's the the
- 1:42:36kind of relationship as we said that that he probably should
- 1:42:39have had more with with Perry, but Mel was a great sort of
- 1:42:42corrective to that. I think so So yeah, Mel was my
- 1:42:47first one is is I think she's Bonnie Langford is just just
- 1:42:50great. And it's a shame actually that
- 1:42:52in although she does get stuff to do in the ultimate foe.
- 1:42:56I think, you know, she should have had a few more stories with
- 1:42:59with Colin really finished they've.
- 1:43:02Done one or two. So, yeah, so I don't mind that
- 1:43:07we that we don't know much about her that she comes in fully
- 1:43:10formed. It's kind of quite refreshing to
- 1:43:13be dropped into the middle of, of something and you have to
- 1:43:16kind of play catch up for the 1st 5 minutes.
- 1:43:18And then you're into this murder mystery plot, which I, as you,
- 1:43:22as you guys have said, you know, it's just really well plotted.
- 1:43:26It's like a Venus flytrap where it kind of expands outwards.
- 1:43:30You've got all these story threads going in different
- 1:43:32directions, all these characters going in different directions.
- 1:43:35And you're kind of like, oh, am I going to be able to keep track
- 1:43:37of all these people? And then it kind of and then it
- 1:43:39closes in on itself at the end in the in the final two parts,
- 1:43:43you know, then my second thing is of course, the Pip and
- 1:43:48Jainisms. I'm just going to I just I just
- 1:43:51got some here. My favorite one is you have the
- 1:43:55temperament of an over cautious rabbit.
- 1:43:57Thank. You.
- 1:44:01And. Another one is when, Oh my
- 1:44:04favorite. My that's the favorite bit of my
- 1:44:06the whole murder mystery thing, because we see on a Blackman
- 1:44:09reading Murder on the Orange Express and then we have, isn't
- 1:44:14it? Yeah, very subtle, yeah.
- 1:44:16I was expecting the the twist to be oh they all did it, but
- 1:44:19thankfully they don't go that direction.
- 1:44:21At some point I did. Think they all did it like that
- 1:44:25was in the air? Well, yes.
- 1:44:27And we, we. Mentioned, you know, Janet being
- 1:44:29quite suspicious and well, you definitely have, yes, yeah.
- 1:44:32Yeah, and people. You know, people kind of give
- 1:44:34her funny looks and you kind of you kind of wondering are they,
- 1:44:37are they, are they suspicious or are they just checking her out?
- 1:44:40You know, someone does mention her though.
- 1:44:41Don't. They I can't.
- 1:44:42I was male. Does That's right.
- 1:44:44She's like, she's prettier than me.
- 1:44:46It's Janet, all right. She's the one who did it.
- 1:44:50But yes, that. Lovely old man, which is I think
- 1:44:52Mr. Kimber, Kim Kinder is his name.
- 1:44:55And he's he has that scene with Janet where he's an obvious
- 1:44:58goner because he says, oh, at my age someone doesn't like to be
- 1:45:02reminded of mortality. And then he gets killed by the
- 1:45:05verbal. Can you actually do you know
- 1:45:07what? The funniest thing about that
- 1:45:09line is that then Koh Shamas was introduced in The Timeless
- 1:45:12Children. Chipnol, the worst detractor of
- 1:45:14this story. I'm an old man.
- 1:45:16I've nearly finished my life. What happens at the end?
- 1:45:19Of course he sacrifices his inspiration.
- 1:45:21Is Tara the Vervoy? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:24Yeah, so, and my final bit would, yeah, just be the the,
- 1:45:30yeah. The fact that it's just a well
- 1:45:32told, well acted Doctor Who story that kind of gives you all
- 1:45:36the the, the satisfactions of a traditional Doctor Who tale.
- 1:45:41But also, you know, there's some nice little shadings in there
- 1:45:44too. I, I like the fact that the
- 1:45:47Vervoids are not bad per SE, you know, and the, however dangerous
- 1:45:53the, the threat they pose, you do kind of feel sad for them at
- 1:45:57the end when they all die. And as you know, as, as the, as
- 1:46:02the trial says, Oh, well, you, you know, you committed
- 1:46:04genocide. But, but yeah.
- 1:46:06And I, I do, I do wonder if they ever turn up again because
- 1:46:10they're, they're a great sort of, you know, very classic
- 1:46:13Doctor Who monster, you know, the mask and the, you know, and,
- 1:46:19and also the, the, the, my final bit is, is, Oh yes, there's that
- 1:46:26great bit with the Megorians where they're, the camera comes
- 1:46:30into them and they're like, what are you doing here?
- 1:46:32We didn't request any refreshment and get water
- 1:46:35chucked over. So yes, terrible.
- 1:46:41Voice. It's good.
- 1:46:42It's well, it's well told. The dialogue is just sings and
- 1:46:46the Doctor and companion pairing just clicks.
- 1:46:49Just great. So can I take exception to one?
- 1:46:52Thing you said Daniel, you said it's well acted.
- 1:46:55This has got trials worst bit of acting.
- 1:46:58Thank God he only gets one line. Tony Scroggo's name from
- 1:47:01Brookside who plays pallets when he comes down and he's found.
- 1:47:05You are obviously mistaken. I mean it's just the he's got
- 1:47:09one fucking line and he can't deliver it.
- 1:47:13He's terrible. He's also got the stagiest line
- 1:47:16delivery of. All time as well, coming from
- 1:47:18Saint Honour Blackman herself, where the scene starts and she
- 1:47:21goes, oh, that puts an entirely difficult on things, doesn't it?
- 1:47:25Like we've missed a whole conversation.
- 1:47:27It's just gone. But I love her.
- 1:47:28Sorry Matt. To you.
- 1:47:30Yeah, Matt. Yeah, sorry, Matt, go for it.
- 1:47:33I think On a Black Man is astonishing in it, I think.
- 1:47:42That the law. Track suit, she wears the static
- 1:47:46build up on that, especially after she's been going for 30
- 1:47:49minutes on the exercise bike with those thighs rubbing
- 1:47:51together. I reckon she just leant against
- 1:47:54that fence in the cargo hold and that's what electrocuted.
- 1:47:58Edwards felt pretty. Sweaty after that.
- 1:48:04But but, but the fact that she sort of wanders her, I'm wearing
- 1:48:07that little sort of cloaky figure is perfect.
- 1:48:11I love on a black man anyway. But I think I think she is such
- 1:48:15a great addition to it. And she's exactly, she's exactly
- 1:48:18the kind of actor you'd expect in a kind of Agatha Christie
- 1:48:23pastie. She could imagine like she was
- 1:48:24around today, she'd be turning up in Midsummer Murders and
- 1:48:27things like that, wouldn't she? It's spot on casting I think
- 1:48:35the. The dialogue.
- 1:48:37Just amazing. Are we to be subjected to a
- 1:48:40dissertation on interplanetary politics?
- 1:48:43Yes, we are just. Drop the sophistry.
- 1:48:48Exactly. Just.
- 1:48:49This is no time to debate ethics.
- 1:48:52The man's demented. It can't help but make.
- 1:48:57You smile, right? Like just.
- 1:48:59Smile on. Every line that's coming out, do
- 1:49:02you know what when you guys? Just read out, you suddenly
- 1:49:05realize how 1920s it all sounds. It kind of works at the time,
- 1:49:09but it does sound. You could imagine it's black
- 1:49:11orchid almost. Have any of you seen that?
- 1:49:13Clip on YouTube of Malcolm was his place who plays Commodore
- 1:49:17Travers and they make him say the line age 90.
- 1:49:20What is it seasons? I'll see again if I start
- 1:49:24robbing my own vaults. He's pissing.
- 1:49:27Himself in the garden. Try to get this out.
- 1:49:30Oh, it's glorious. Michael.
- 1:49:32Michael Craig, thank you. I think.
- 1:49:35This I I love Nightmare of Eden. There's something very nightmare
- 1:49:39of Eden about it, the sort of starliner and then the monsters
- 1:49:42that escape and start sort of slaughtering people.
- 1:49:45And that's almost like a byproduct of the of the mystery
- 1:49:49plot, not the main point. I think Bonnie's great.
- 1:49:53As everyone said, there's a great scene where the Doctor
- 1:49:57can't get a word in edgeways between her and Lasky, and you
- 1:50:01kind of think it's that they're starting to.
- 1:50:04That's exactly what Colin's Doctor needs at this point, as a
- 1:50:07companion that isn't running around after him sort of
- 1:50:11complaining about everything and and being in his shadow.
- 1:50:15But someone who's smart, willing to take the lead, and sometimes
- 1:50:19it's him that's a little bit sort of browbeaten by by Mel
- 1:50:24Matt when when Gary Russell. Conceptualized even in SMY.
- 1:50:27Do you remember in the Mario conspiracy, the very first scene
- 1:50:30he's trying to talk and she's like, I certainly do my Ellie
- 1:50:33Carg. I swear it's that scene he's
- 1:50:36drawn. This is absolutely not.
- 1:50:37You're right. You're absolutely right.
- 1:50:40I'm going to. I will be a slight voice of
- 1:50:44dissent. I think there are two things
- 1:50:47that don't quite work about it for me.
- 1:50:49The 1st is the thing that everyone praises it for and and
- 1:50:53the season 23 box set Blu-ray thing is is great, but the fact
- 1:50:58that the trial scenes are utterly irrelevant to this I.
- 1:51:03I get I. Get that you can watch and enjoy
- 1:51:06it without those trial scenes, but it is meant to be part of
- 1:51:09the trial of a Time Lord and it's kind of like.
- 1:51:13Is this the best evidence? The doctor could pick around
- 1:51:16his, like, future innocence. I love the story, but as part of
- 1:51:20trial, you, you, you got to raise your eyebrows slightly.
- 1:51:23And the other bit, I don't think it quite works as an Agatha
- 1:51:27Christie pastiche because, like, if it was doing it properly,
- 1:51:31you'd have the big day anymore at the end where they bring all
- 1:51:34of the suspects together and the Doctor does the big.
- 1:51:37Of course it was you, Janet. And she's like, and then she's
- 1:51:40the evil voice and she'll be like, yeah, I've got away with
- 1:51:43it too, you bastard or whatever. But but the fact that instead
- 1:51:49becomes a bit of a ver void monster story, I think does for
- 1:51:52me. It sort of detracts a little bit
- 1:51:55from that Agatha Christie pastiche that I was going so
- 1:52:00well for the first bit of the story.
- 1:52:02And I always think, oh, I wish, I wish Colin had got that big.
- 1:52:06It's the only way. You got all of the suspects.
- 1:52:08Together in this big Poirot moment and I feel like that's a
- 1:52:11little bit of a miss for me. But that said, I do still
- 1:52:14really, really enjoy. I really enjoy it.
- 1:52:18Fabulous So. So far 3 for three.
- 1:52:21I want to see that scene so. Badly.
- 1:52:23Where Janet is revealed to be, you know, that harmless old man.
- 1:52:27He's stack of piss. That's why I slept the poison in
- 1:52:31his drink. He always made me.
- 1:52:33Bring in his. Drink when he was in the shower,
- 1:52:36The Dirty old bastard I was, so I'm clearing.
- 1:52:39Up his nappies. OK, let's stop being ages now.
- 1:52:41And move on to the ultimate fuck.
- 1:52:44Do you know? What I thought before we
- 1:52:45started, I thought, if this goes the way I think it's going to
- 1:52:48go, I'm going to bloody end up with the ultimate Foe, aren't I?
- 1:52:51And guess what? I've ended up with the ultimate
- 1:52:55foe. Enjoy.
- 1:52:55Thank. You.
- 1:52:57It's it's a mixed bag, isn't it? And even my reasons for or
- 1:53:02against are going to be mixed, so I'll let you decide where
- 1:53:06it's going to fall. My first reason for good or bad,
- 1:53:10and it's very much for bad, is Part 13.
- 1:53:14And look, can we? Joe's already pulling faces so
- 1:53:17he's not going to agree with me. We need to be honest about this,
- 1:53:20Joe. Part 13 is possibly the most
- 1:53:23ramshackle, inept, laughable, ridiculous, make it up as you go
- 1:53:28along episode of Doctor Who ever committed to videotape.
- 1:53:31It's worse than the slow Dalek in the Chase.
- 1:53:34It's worse than the Zabi crashing into the cameras from
- 1:53:38or from 50? 5 rod.
- 1:53:40Oh God no. Christ, no, you should have
- 1:53:44thought like with a reveal like who the valley artist.
- 1:53:47This couldn't possibly go wrong. But boy does this go wrong.
- 1:53:50So let's start with dialogue and Oh dear, we're back to name
- 1:53:54calling. We're back to the stackyard and
- 1:53:56what stackyard is rail yards like my heart sank.
- 1:54:01Why are we doing this again? We dropped that in part for no,
- 1:54:04it's back. That's it Rod.
- 1:54:06Now we're. Getting it the dirt I'm about to
- 1:54:08come exactly to. Thank you.
- 1:54:12Then there's Bonnie. I love Bonnie, but she's got
- 1:54:15some terrible dialogue and you just served up one of the worst
- 1:54:18lines, which is followed by despicable.
- 1:54:21I'm as truthful. Honest and about as boring as
- 1:54:25they. Well, I'm glad you said it.
- 1:54:28It's. Just the dialogue.
- 1:54:29He's just cringe, and she's accompanied by Tony Selby, who
- 1:54:32at this point has given up any remote pretense at subtlety.
- 1:54:37He's walking around the courtroom trying to flog off
- 1:54:40bits of the set. He's already in that version of
- 1:54:43already fallen horses if he's supposed to be a.
- 1:54:45Crook. He's not exactly subtle about
- 1:54:47it, has he? Then we've got hang on, we've
- 1:54:49got Melanie, otherwise known as Mel.
- 1:54:52We've got Anthony only who says he's known as the Master.
- 1:54:55We've got the Valiard who the Master says he's the Doctor and
- 1:54:58that's how he's always known him.
- 1:54:59Ravalox was known as Earth. I was half expecting Linda
- 1:55:03Bellingham to say she's known as the Oxo Lady.
- 1:55:06I mean, just, it's bonkers, isn't it?
- 1:55:08You've got some terrible clunky info dumps which nearly kill the
- 1:55:12Revelation. And talking of Revelations, this
- 1:55:15is where we get the revelation the Perry is still alive, and
- 1:55:20it's thrown in so casually it completely undermines mind walk.
- 1:55:25But it's all right. We're off to the Matrix.
- 1:55:27Everything's going to be saved. Now, Joe, you remember when we
- 1:55:29did Deadly Assassin? I was absolutely extolling the
- 1:55:32virtues of The Matrix and those 22 horror nightmare sequences.
- 1:55:37Yeah, very do. It wasn't.
- 1:55:38It absolutely amazing. What do we get here?
- 1:55:415 minutes of Eddie Yates from Coronation Street talking about
- 1:55:44bureaucracy like he's in a poor man's version of a Dickens
- 1:55:47adaptation. It's not funny.
- 1:55:50It kills the pace, kills any momentum, and is horrific.
- 1:55:54So par 13 for me is absolutely gone.
- 1:55:56It should have been. They should got that Mel out
- 1:55:58that trash can back to in Vervoids and put par 13 in but
- 1:56:03but my. Second reason.
- 1:56:06And I've called my second reason.
- 1:56:08Thank fuck Pep and Jane for two-part of us.
- 1:56:13Actually. Filmed as one, the difference
- 1:56:15between Part 13 and Part 14? They're worlds apart.
- 1:56:19It's tangible. As soon as you hit par 14, it
- 1:56:22just feels like everyone suddenly UPS their game.
- 1:56:25It feels like a new production. You start with that brilliant
- 1:56:27sequence of the Valley Yard winking in and out of existence.
- 1:56:30He's suddenly showing his hand, He's establishing himself as a
- 1:56:34threat. The music is pumping, the
- 1:56:35visuals are in interesting, the comedy works.
- 1:56:38At last, when he leans over, the glitz goes my probe and it's
- 1:56:42suddenly, it's genuinely funny. It's suddenly genuinely
- 1:56:45thrilling. You've suddenly got poison gas.
- 1:56:47The Doctor being rescued by the Master, got a fake trial, a fake
- 1:56:51Bonnie. But again, as with the previous
- 1:56:53story, with their voice, Pip and Jane make it all make sense.
- 1:56:57It's logical, it flows, there's a consistency to do.
- 1:57:00It does all the writing work here?
- 1:57:02Of course it doesn't, because we got that nonsense about civil
- 1:57:06war and insurrection on Gallifrey that we suddenly get
- 1:57:09told about. I've no idea what's going on
- 1:57:11there. But you know what?
- 1:57:12When it comes down to it, we find that the the Valley Yard
- 1:57:15wants to kill off the top brass on Gallifrey.
- 1:57:17The Doctor saves the day. It's clear what's going on and I
- 1:57:20think Pip and Jane do an absolutely sterling job of
- 1:57:23pulling everything, everything together in very difficult
- 1:57:26circumstances. And I actually really enjoyed
- 1:57:28Part 14. So it's one apiece and for my
- 1:57:32final reason is going to be an absolute positive.
- 1:57:35And it's the performances. Colin is great in this story,
- 1:57:40isn't it? So sad he ends up with the most
- 1:57:42ignominious line of all time with characters, characters,
- 1:57:45characters. But you know what?
- 1:57:47I exactly but. In this two parter, he's shown,
- 1:57:50he's absolutely shown. We've seen that he's brave, he's
- 1:57:53intelligent, he's charming, he's charismatic, he's full of rage
- 1:57:56and anger when he needs to be. He's devious, he's insightful.
- 1:58:00Everything you want from the lead character and everything
- 1:58:02you want from the lead actor. Yes, he's blessed that he's
- 1:58:05playing off against Michael Jason, who, thank God in Part
- 1:58:0814, is freed from the constraints of the courtroom.
- 1:58:11He did that little runaway bit in Part 13 when no one noticed
- 1:58:14him run away. Finally, he can do some kind of
- 1:58:18grandiose melodrama that he was brought him for, and he's
- 1:58:21brilliant. And the two of them play off
- 1:58:22each other. Amy, I think is great in this,
- 1:58:24too. He's kind of halfway between his
- 1:58:27OTT panto and his more subdued master Bonnie.
- 1:58:31I think Bonnie's horribly underserved by this, but you
- 1:58:34know, when she does the fake out, when she comes to rescue
- 1:58:36the Doctor from the fake out trial, you know, that's a good
- 1:58:38moment for her. But generally, across the board
- 1:58:41performances are great in this. So 2 for one I'm putting it
- 1:58:44through. You love that bit where it?
- 1:58:47Goes don't go through that door. They're so great together.
- 1:58:54They are great. Together and I love when she
- 1:58:56rescues them off the arc. Right.
- 1:58:59Should we go to the comments? I think John Bensale is not
- 1:59:02going. To agree with you, you know, in
- 1:59:03fact, I think he may have reverse opinions.
- 1:59:05He's got completely reverse. Opinion to me.
- 1:59:07So John Bensale says excellent first part.
- 1:59:10No, it's bollocks. Some killer revelations and
- 1:59:12nightmare nightmare world no, full of surreal terrorism,
- 1:59:16bureaucracy gone mad plus the cracking kevvanger.
- 1:59:18Not so excellent second part. Kudos the bakers for last minute
- 1:59:22intervention but the spurious morality can catharsis off.
- 1:59:26Well done, John James. Lark now.
- 1:59:29I love this. So positive, bold and
- 1:59:31imaginative and so confidently realized.
- 1:59:34They almost convinced you it's the climax to a coherent epic
- 1:59:37this series is pretending to be, rather than the loosely
- 1:59:40connected patchwork that it is. Like Colin's coat.
- 1:59:43None of it makes sense, especially when Pip and Jane get
- 1:59:45involved, but it's done with such style.
- 1:59:47That it doesn't. Matter and hurrah for Dominic
- 1:59:50Glynn. What do you mean it doesn't
- 1:59:52make? Sense it's a MB modem, we all
- 1:59:54know what one of those are, Luke Sims, Jenkins says.
- 1:59:57Like a new series season finale blockbuster, don't think too
- 2:00:00much and go along for the ride A bloody good time.
- 2:00:03Andy Parkinson behind. The scenes turmoil mean this
- 2:00:06script is delivered last minute and it shows.
- 2:00:08I quite enjoy it, but it's got more holes than a Swiss cheese
- 2:00:11factory. Probably the weakest of the
- 2:00:13season. Been it, John Arnold says.
- 2:00:15It's a. Miracle it hangs together at
- 2:00:17all, but it just about does it with Colin and Jason having a
- 2:00:20whale of a time. Given the original proposed
- 2:00:22ending, we should probably be glad that Saywood's departed
- 2:00:25here here and the series could get let a little light back in
- 2:00:29Dan Hollingsworth. Far more interesting for it's
- 2:00:31behind the scene dramas than anything seen on the screen.
- 2:00:34An appropriate messy end to an era that was marred by terrible
- 2:00:38decisions by the production team.
- 2:00:39Change and improvement was coming, though, David Gillespie
- 2:00:42Pratt said A. Game of two halves, obvious
- 2:00:44reasons, and it sort of works. The revelations in 13 are
- 2:00:47wonderfully done and the imagery in The Matrix is effective.
- 2:00:50Pip and Jane take the reins and once they have a different
- 2:00:52style, they deliver a finale that works, Jason Thompson says
- 2:00:56a. Mess, too much time in
- 2:00:58fantasyland and another cliffhanger resolved by It's not
- 2:01:01reality so it's OK. Cheating the Valliard is an
- 2:01:04intriguing concept, but the chickening out of killing Perry
- 2:01:07was a bad move. A major insurrection on
- 2:01:09Gallifrey barely registers, given that we only hear about it
- 2:01:13for a line or two bin like Coy says, Is there a?
- 2:01:16More awfully clunky piece of dialogue in Doctor Who than
- 2:01:19Melanie known as Mel. I quite like that, I think it's
- 2:01:22quite endearing. Holmes's final Doctor Who act
- 2:01:25jams together the Victoriana atmosphere of Talons and the
- 2:01:28Kafkaesque bureaucracy of the Sun Makers.
- 2:01:31Then Pip and Jane pick up the scraps and do an entertaining
- 2:01:34job. But minus points for the worst
- 2:01:36version of the theme until the Capaldi era.
- 2:01:38And a strange choice to leave the Valley Yard, to live, to
- 2:01:41fight again. Another day.
- 2:01:44Paul Smy. Says the perfect.
- 2:01:46End the Revelations are jaw-dropping.
- 2:01:49Michael Jason is superb throughout the season, but at
- 2:01:51his sinister best here location is perfect.
- 2:01:55Big Orange, Michael says. After 14 episodes, the trial
- 2:01:57doesn't stick the landing. The two parts feel so tonally
- 2:02:00disconnected. One of those masses what ifs of
- 2:02:03classic Who. What if Holmes had a chance to
- 2:02:05give another edit or two? What if Saywood wasn't fired and
- 2:02:08we got the original ending? What if Colin had come back for
- 2:02:11another season under Carmel? That last one.
- 2:02:14We definitely talked about that, but I would love to have seen a
- 2:02:17season of Collin with Carmel. Dave Rennie has lots to do and
- 2:02:20was obviously troubled but I really like it.
- 2:02:23The cliffhanger is fantastic, Jeffrey Hughes is so watchable
- 2:02:26and the Valley of somehow escapes.
- 2:02:28Huge shame this was Collins last TV though, how utterly easier.
- 2:02:34Ian Banksters looks. Fantastic, but it's a collection
- 2:02:36of great ideas held together by some terrible linking material.
- 2:02:39The cast do their best, but the poor dialogue really holds this
- 2:02:43back. It should be superb, but it
- 2:02:44falls short. PlayStation Gamer 1. 87 The bit
- 2:02:48at the end where they say and Perry lived reminds me of the
- 2:02:51final scene in A Muppets Christmas Carol regarding Tiny
- 2:02:54Tim, Tom nuisances, Pip and Jane.
- 2:02:56Are underrated. Perhaps they just needed a
- 2:02:58script editor because speedily written episode 14 isn't half
- 2:03:02bad. Yeah, look what?
- 2:03:04They did with Tom and the Ronnie when they didn't have a script
- 2:03:06editor. Again, PJ Gallery Perry's death
- 2:03:09should have been left untouched. It was shocking and brilliant.
- 2:03:13So, Joe. Off to that foe.
- 2:03:15Please no. Give it to our.
- 2:03:17Guests, I'll go last on this one.
- 2:03:18Perfect. Let's go to Matt.
- 2:03:21Not to Joe Ford. Or, as I've always known him,
- 2:03:23Doc Ohon. I think Rod I'm.
- 2:03:28With you on this as a story of two halves and the stuff that I
- 2:03:33really like about it. I love the Master as the
- 2:03:36surprise defence witness. I think it's very 5 Doctors
- 2:03:41right where the Master has to come to the Doctor's rescue.
- 2:03:43But given that they wanted to include Ailey, it's nice that
- 2:03:48they suddenly have a sort of returning villain right at the
- 2:03:52end and he's not playing the typically villainous role.
- 2:03:58I kind of think the very odd makes more sense now that modern
- 2:04:02fans are used to evil doctors turning up 10 a penny in the
- 2:04:06series and it's an I think it's an interesting idea to have a
- 2:04:14sort of doctors dark side, a dark future Doctor I.
- 2:04:20Think the. Downs and some of the dialogue
- 2:04:23is is really fun. I think some of the imagery is
- 2:04:25great inside the Matrix. I love the the sort of you're
- 2:04:29like this is all joke, the sort of hands tugging at the doctor
- 2:04:32from all angles, so fucking him down.
- 2:04:37I'm used to saying those. Hands back, don't worry, but
- 2:04:40bear if the story. Is young Mr. Popowick?
- 2:04:42Obviously, and I think the performances are too grotesque
- 2:04:51to be real, but they are quite fun.
- 2:04:55The downsides to me? Are I don't ever feel like
- 2:04:59anyone's really thought what an evil version of the doctor would
- 2:05:02actually be like, because I the valley yards plan is the valley
- 2:05:07of plan is clear enough, but it's like has anyone really
- 2:05:10thought that the the doctor if he went evil, his top his top
- 2:05:14ambition would be to use some CSO electricity to wipe out 1/4
- 2:05:20of Time Lords. It yes, Roy Gallifrey.
- 2:05:23Yes, he's getting. His own back frack of.
- 2:05:25Infinity seems. A bit low rent.
- 2:05:30But I kind of feel like it's very compromised by losing the
- 2:05:35original idea, which is like, he just wanted to keep existing.
- 2:05:39He was like he was the final doctor and he there was so much
- 2:05:42more he wanted to do. And you start to get a hint of
- 2:05:46that Time Lord victorious kind of.
- 2:05:47I could have done so much more. I need to keep going.
- 2:05:50Kind of sensing some of the early outlines that just don't
- 2:05:54come across on screen. I think it doesn't quite, it
- 2:06:03doesn't quite tie the trial together in the in the most
- 2:06:07satisfying way. And I kind of think, given that
- 2:06:13the whole beef around Saywood leaving and walking out was JNT
- 2:06:18saying no, the endings 2 down B and two unresolved.
- 2:06:24You kind of end it with the Valley yard being unresolved and
- 2:06:26still sort of standing there cackling and that you know, they
- 2:06:30they knew that this could be the last one because that's what
- 2:06:33that's why say would laugh. That's why Pip and Jane write
- 2:06:36it. So knowing that giving Colin the
- 2:06:39last line, giving possibly the last the doctor's last ever
- 2:06:43words, Carrot juice, carrot juice, carrot juice.
- 2:06:46I kind of think it's not it's not come on, Ace, we've got work
- 2:06:50to do. It's a kind of finale, is it?
- 2:06:53I'm not I'm not quite keen on it.
- 2:06:56So I'm sort of torn on this one. It it kind of works and it kind
- 2:07:00of doesn't. I probably let it through, but
- 2:07:05they're equally annoying bits about it.
- 2:07:08That would mean that I wouldn't be devastated if it didn't make
- 2:07:13it interesting. Daniel.
- 2:07:16Let's go to you, OK. Well, just staying with the
- 2:07:19negative briefly, it I mean, my biggest problem for me is just
- 2:07:25the way it kind of wraps up. It's it's really kind of
- 2:07:28anticlimactic where you have a lot of techno Babble with that
- 2:07:32MB modem and then they blow it up and then job done.
- 2:07:36You know, for we mentioned Tony Selby Savolone glitz where was
- 2:07:43dimmer. It would have been great to have
- 2:07:45them, the pair of them back together again.
- 2:07:48That would have brought a lot more kind of pizzazz, I think in
- 2:07:51the proceedings. And yes.
- 2:07:55And then again, my my thing with the the Perry kind of
- 2:07:58resurrection, if you are going to go, if you're going to take
- 2:08:01Doctor Who to that sort of dark, dangerous, upsetting place, to
- 2:08:05then reverse it at the last minute just cheapens it, I
- 2:08:08think. And he's kind of does actually
- 2:08:10does the character a bit of a disservice, even though she was
- 2:08:13terribly, terribly treated all through her run.
- 2:08:17But on the plus side, there is, as we mentioned, the
- 2:08:21performances. I mean, Colin Baker, that
- 2:08:24speech, someone else has probably got stuff to say about
- 2:08:29that. So I'll just go with his line
- 2:08:32where he says the Valley Yard overestimates.
- 2:08:34His own cleverness. He is consumed with his own.
- 2:08:37Vanity. And it's great that they pair up
- 2:08:41Colin with Mel again. They get so Mel does get a
- 2:08:45little bit of stuff to do where she goes to rescue the doctor in
- 2:08:49the Matrix. I quite like that.
- 2:08:51Although yeah, the as we said, the dialogue that she gets in
- 2:08:54the courtroom scenes is not great.
- 2:08:57And can we also? Call out the worst bit of
- 2:08:59direction where she goes to grab the key from the keeper and he
- 2:09:02trips her up. It's very, it suddenly goes
- 2:09:05very. I was, yeah.
- 2:09:08I was not. I had to rewind it.
- 2:09:09What? It's very subtle, the way.
- 2:09:12His foot comes out and you just see her high heels go over.
- 2:09:18But my. Big #2 for me is sorry I phrased
- 2:09:21that wrong. My big.
- 2:09:24My big second reason. Is Anthony Ailey as the master,
- 2:09:28which how great is it to have a sort of surprise appearance for
- 2:09:32him on the screen to be. But you know, you can just
- 2:09:35imagine he's watched the whole of the trial of a Time Lord and
- 2:09:38thinking, I'm not having this. I'm going to I'm going to have
- 2:09:41my moment in the sun now and kind of Lord it over the the
- 2:09:44Time Lords and the trial and the courtroom and I'm going to, you
- 2:09:48know, hug some of the glory for myself.
- 2:09:51And as we did mention that he kind of pitches it not to
- 2:09:56pantomime and not to subtle. It's kind of a nice in between.
- 2:10:00And my favorite bit of that is when he he he partners up with
- 2:10:04glitz and then at one point he he holds glitz at gunpoint and
- 2:10:08glitz is like, oh, you know, I thought we trusted each other.
- 2:10:11And he says, my trust in you is an equal proportion to your
- 2:10:14trust me. And he looks really sinister.
- 2:10:17Thus the way he's LED in that in that darkness.
- 2:10:20And, you know, whereas it's truly evil where it's, you know,
- 2:10:24this is not this is, you know, this is not fun master anymore.
- 2:10:27This is the guy who could easily just murder him if he wanted to
- 2:10:31love as well. He's got that enormous.
- 2:10:32Treasure chest in his TARDIS full of jewels, just in case he
- 2:10:36needs to bribe. You know, the latest con man
- 2:10:38that comes his way. Yeah, and.
- 2:10:42And then finally, yeah, it's, it is, it is a bit of a mess.
- 2:10:46But as with all messes, that's why I'm, I'm always kind of, I
- 2:10:51always bristle at that description of mess because in a
- 2:10:53mess there's good stuff and there's bad stuff.
- 2:10:56So the good stuff I, I want to focus on is yeah, the all these
- 2:11:00ideas, the fact that the Valliard is a dark version of of
- 2:11:05the Doctor, and that's, you know, basically he's he the.
- 2:11:10Idea that he would he. There is basically a sort of
- 2:11:12self loathing there that he hates himself.
- 2:11:15And so he wants to, he wants to, he wants to, his dark side wants
- 2:11:20to basically kind of free himself of the the moral side of
- 2:11:24the doctor, the misguided moralizing.
- 2:11:26I really must curb these. Urges.
- 2:11:28I love that bitch. He's misguided, Maxims starts.
- 2:11:32Starts to. Slightly.
- 2:11:33Be a little bit doctorish. Well, yeah, quite.
- 2:11:36Quite, Yeah, yeah. And, you know, there's all
- 2:11:39these, they just, they just kind of throw all kinds of things in
- 2:11:42there. There's, you know, the Doctor
- 2:11:43becomes a catatonic zombie for one, for a bit.
- 2:11:46And and then, you know, there's that whole bit on the beach, as
- 2:11:48we mentioned, where he blinks in and out of existence and he
- 2:11:51looks like something out of an Ingmar Bergman, like the 7th
- 2:11:54Seal, kind of, you know, because they even bring up death and
- 2:11:58they quote Hamlet and they quote A Tale of Two Cities.
- 2:12:02And there's the Masters TARDIS and yeah, and it's and the
- 2:12:08Fantasy Factory and all that bureaucracy.
- 2:12:10And so there is a lot of kind of atmosphere in there, I think as
- 2:12:13well. It is just a bit of a shame that
- 2:12:15that all that, yes, as we said, the Gallifrey collapsing and
- 2:12:18Time Lords being thrown into chaos is all happens off screen.
- 2:12:22And you just kind of have to use your imagination, which if it's
- 2:12:26the finale, it kind of is asking a bit of a bit a bit much, but
- 2:12:30but you know, So, yeah, I'm going to let this one through.
- 2:12:33Oh, and my final thing is we mentioned the hands pulling the
- 2:12:38Doctor down into the sand. That's got to be a steal from
- 2:12:42the magician's apprentice, right?
- 2:12:45Where where you know so? If so, it's nice to know that
- 2:12:49Stephen Moffat is a fan of A Trial of the Time Lord and
- 2:12:52specifically the Ultimate Foe. So you know if you're going to
- 2:12:55steal from them. If you're going to steal, steal
- 2:12:57from the not quite best. But Joe, over to you 2.
- 2:13:03Two positives, but with an air of the negative.
- 2:13:07Pair of. Caution, caution.
- 2:13:10Let's go with caution. That people describe it as a
- 2:13:13mess, but this is one of those stories where the behind the
- 2:13:16scenes story is almost if not more interesting than the story
- 2:13:22itself. And then a bit like Underworld,
- 2:13:24you can watch Underworld DVD. The documentary is far more
- 2:13:27interesting than the story itself.
- 2:13:29I wouldn't say that's the case for the Ultimate Phone, but it
- 2:13:31is a really Saywood goes. All the lawyers coming in beep
- 2:13:35and Shane being pulled in at the last minute.
- 2:13:37The fact that this is even comprehensible on any level
- 2:13:42given what was going on at the time, the fact is as
- 2:13:45entertaining as it is and it's fun to watch.
- 2:13:48I think. Props to JNT, who's holding this
- 2:13:52very damaged ship afloat with his bare hands at this point and
- 2:13:55pulling in whatever say, pair of hands he can find to to get the
- 2:13:59thing bloody finished. I agree with Matt and I agree
- 2:14:03with Daniel. I think Anthony Amy coming into
- 2:14:06this story is one of the best things about the trial of the
- 2:14:08Time Lord and the fact that he calls the whole thing as Sherrod
- 2:14:12and he just starts going. I've been watching this bullshit
- 2:14:15for the last 12 episodes and now I'm here to bring some sanity to
- 2:14:20the proceedings. And there's one bit, I swear,
- 2:14:22where the camera goes right up on him as he's giving his speech
- 2:14:25and he just sort of goes right down the camera.
- 2:14:29Amy's having the best time of his life.
- 2:14:32It is. I must prefer Amy's master, like
- 2:14:36you said, that in the Five Doctors and in this and in the
- 2:14:39Makadarani actually, where he's the sidekick and getting kicked
- 2:14:42in the nuts than when they're trying to make him scary.
- 2:14:44Because maybe one exception aside, he just isn't scary.
- 2:14:49He's much more fun as the panto bidden.
- 2:14:51And that's exactly what he is here.
- 2:14:53I really love the surrealism. As well, and so does Colin
- 2:14:56Baker, who says in the wonderful DWM feature where he turns up at
- 2:15:01the door at the end of Terror of the Vervoy is to watch the
- 2:15:05ultimate. Foe with the Time Team.
- 2:15:07And I remember a quote of him saying that he just wanted more
- 2:15:10of this sort of stuff, sort of sapphire and steel weirdness and
- 2:15:14surrealism and all of this. And it is kind of refreshing
- 2:15:17because Colin Baker's time doesn't really isn't really
- 2:15:19laden with too much for saying this is the pilot for the.
- 2:15:21Stranger Jimmy? Very possibly.
- 2:15:24Yes, maybe he could have it off with.
- 2:15:26Who did you have it off with in The Stranger?
- 2:15:28Was it Sophie or what's the? Brian, what's?
- 2:15:30There, Sophie. Aldred.
- 2:15:32Yeah, she. Usually turns up.
- 2:15:34And these cheapo spin offs, Yes, I've got Sophie, Aldred and so
- 2:15:37in. Thanks, Matt, but I think all of
- 2:15:40that stuff works really well. I love it when he first beams in
- 2:15:42and you can hear the kid screaming in the distance and
- 2:15:45he's going around that weird circular thing and it really
- 2:15:48feels like you're back in sort of talons territory.
- 2:15:50The hands coming out the barrel, the hands coming out the sand
- 2:15:54going in and out of the the waiting rooms.
- 2:15:56Bad dialogue rod. Where are the hopelessly out
- 2:15:59date magazines? I love that life so much.
- 2:16:02My my surgery has the most outdate magazines you're ever
- 2:16:04going to see. Yeah.
- 2:16:06And then in Marvel scene, Pippen Jones pull every trick they have
- 2:16:10the gas on the beach, you know, hypnotizing the doctor like you
- 2:16:13said, assassinations masks coming up like it's.
- 2:16:17Everything in the Doctor. Who trick book, But it's kind of
- 2:16:20fun to watch scene to scene and when these actors are playing
- 2:16:23these scenes, how can it be anything else but an absolute
- 2:16:26joy? But my favorite thing about the
- 2:16:28ultimate vote is the twist of the Valley Yard being the
- 2:16:30doctor. I think that's a really shocking
- 2:16:33dramatic twist to hinge the 13th part of this 14 part story on,
- 2:16:39and it kicks the whole. So it suddenly makes those
- 2:16:42fucking trial scenes relevant that now we're doing it in real
- 2:16:46time and it's pertinent to the doctor as well.
- 2:16:50And Jason Mann, what a great doctor.
- 2:16:52Why do we never list Michael Jackson in the list of doctors?
- 2:16:55He's absolutely glorious, apart from a few comments he's makes
- 2:16:58at conventions. But we won't go there.
- 2:17:00You know, I bought them the PIED.
- 2:17:01Still. No, No, it's fun.
- 2:17:03It's really, really fun. And yeah, I think you guys are
- 2:17:07right to say it is a bit wobbly, but it's better than it it it
- 2:17:12probably should have been. So let's put every story in
- 2:17:16Trial of a Time Lord through. Trial of a Time Lord.
- 2:17:20All four stories go into oh wait, one more thing.
- 2:17:26The ultimate foe has. My all time favorite, most over
- 2:17:30the top line reading ever in Doctor Who.
- 2:17:33May I do it please in a you know in that episode that's been full
- 2:17:37of quotes the valley all is deliberately using the doctor's
- 2:17:42romantic nature of against him and your content to lit him.
- 2:17:49She's like, she's somewhere in the rafters, calling out to the
- 2:17:52back of her theater and she. Bless her heart, she didn't.
- 2:17:57Have a hope, did she? Anyway, it's all through.
- 2:18:01Fabulous. So all four.
- 2:18:03Stories go through to Round 2, so cue the Camp music Joe Camp
- 2:18:08music ago. And we?
- 2:18:10Start with Mind Warp plays the mysterious planet.
- 2:18:19Well, I'm going to go first because I.
- 2:18:20Think I've made it very obvious. I love Mind Warp, so Mind Warp
- 2:18:24is my choice of those two. Brave.
- 2:18:27It's bold, it's exciting, it's drilling, it's dark, it's
- 2:18:30hilarious. Absolutely every time.
- 2:18:35That a guess. So hard because Mysterious
- 2:18:44Planet is the fun one and Mind Walk is the not fun one.
- 2:18:48But I think out of out of the both stories, I think we're
- 2:18:52still kind of Doctor Who fans are still arguing about mind
- 2:18:55walk today. And I think that means it's an
- 2:18:58important contribution to Doctor Who history.
- 2:19:01So mind walk. Definitely mind or I think it's
- 2:19:08all the reasons you said Rod and I think it's.
- 2:19:13As I said, as I said, right? At the outs, I think it's better
- 2:19:15than somewhere else. I think it's probably the most
- 2:19:19interesting part of the trial, and I think it's Philip Martin's
- 2:19:25high point and Doctor Who. Given what we've got since I
- 2:19:28think a big finish, I created a. Chrome, OH.
- 2:19:32Yeah, I actually would have gone for Mysterious Planet.
- 2:19:37I think my warp is a better story.
- 2:19:39But I just think what Holmes does with Colin in Mysterious
- 2:19:43Planet, he turns around an entire era in the space of a
- 2:19:47single script. But my warp's going through
- 2:19:51fabulous so. First one to fall, so I've only
- 2:19:54got one more spin of my magic whale and it's Terror of the
- 2:19:58Vervoids. For once, the wheels.
- 2:20:03Done the right thing up against the ultimate foe.
- 2:20:07Matt, go for it. Ultimate foe or ver voids?
- 2:20:14If you've finished with my trick suit, I I just love.
- 2:20:19The fact that the first, literally the first line of the
- 2:20:22ultimate foe is. I came as soon as I could, my
- 2:20:25lady. How did nobody mention that till
- 2:20:29now? I mean, I've never said that my.
- 2:20:34Lady, it's up to you, Matt of. Course.
- 2:20:40I think I'm going to have to go with.
- 2:20:44Terror of the Vervoids. Because I think on that whole it
- 2:20:49is a better, more consistent piece of work, I do think.
- 2:20:54Though that. It's not as good a bit of the
- 2:20:57trial itself as the ultimate foe.
- 2:20:59I think the ultimate Foe, for all its flaws, actually does
- 2:21:03really engage with what's at stake in the trial and makes
- 2:21:07itself about the trial. So, but I'm going to stick with
- 2:21:10the voice, Daniel. What?
- 2:21:14Are you a comedian? No more of a clown, actually.
- 2:21:17Would you care to hear my rendering of on with the
- 2:21:19mottling? No, it's.
- 2:21:22It's. Terror of the Vervoids.
- 2:21:23Of course. No, this is.
- 2:21:26Probably going to be the most obvious one, but I'm going to
- 2:21:29ask you Ultimate fire or terror of the Vervoids.
- 2:21:32Terror of the Vervoids. Just for the fact that on a
- 2:21:35weekly basis, Marv Raft. Does.
- 2:21:38Axe out the scene where Mel has the thing on in the gym and
- 2:21:42goes, hello, what? And then she sort of runs up and
- 2:21:45he jumps up the sofa and pretends he's putting it up on
- 2:21:48the grill. And he does it every single week
- 2:21:49for me because I love it. Terror them, of course.
- 2:21:52My God, it's glorious. Fabulous.
- 2:21:55And I'm absolutely. As well, going with Terror of
- 2:21:57the Verve voice, it's just so so.
- 2:21:59Much fun. What a face off the lightest and
- 2:22:01the darkest Collins story. Gosh, this one's going to be
- 2:22:05hard. So mind warp or verve voice we
- 2:22:08do need for a winner. Let's.
- 2:22:10Start voice for me. The voice for me.
- 2:22:12The voice for Joe. One for the voice, Daniel.
- 2:22:21My tear. Of the tear of the verve voice
- 2:22:24Mind warp. Two for verve voice.
- 2:22:27Matt, OH. I'm sticking with mind Warp, I
- 2:22:31think it's the the most interesting.
- 2:22:34I'm going to stick with Mind Warp as well.
- 2:22:36No usually. Usually we would have to have a
- 2:22:39fight to the death to find the finale, but as you may need to
- 2:22:44can. We have the fight, please.
- 2:22:45Definitely. OK.
- 2:22:47We both are going to go through. In our final for the best Colin
- 2:22:51story, which we'll explain in a minute so but we are for the
- 2:22:54time being going to park Mind Warp and tariff of all votes as
- 2:22:59joint winners, should we say for the time being, but we'll come
- 2:23:01to that in a second so. We're now going to talk.
- 2:23:06And pick our favorite Colin story overall.
- 2:23:10So first of all, before we get into it, Matt, Daniel, would you
- 2:23:13like to give us your overall feelings about Colin as a Doctor
- 2:23:18overall across his entire era? How do you feel about him?
- 2:23:22Let's start with. Daniel.
- 2:23:28So when? When?
- 2:23:31Because I'm still, I'm like Matt, I haven't seen every
- 2:23:34Doctor Who story. I'm still, that's still a
- 2:23:37journey in progress. And when, when, when people
- 2:23:43I've, I've heard, you know, many people go on about Colin and you
- 2:23:47know, oh, you need to listen to his big finish and oh, you know,
- 2:23:50he was so undeserved. And of course, those, you know,
- 2:23:53when you have so much praise, it automatically makes me
- 2:23:57suspicious. So I, I approached him with a,
- 2:24:00you know, a very fair amount of of trepidation, shall we say.
- 2:24:05And he was an absolute revelation.
- 2:24:08He's a just a just a joy as as as the doctor and just the his,
- 2:24:14his, the way he gets so indignant over the smallest
- 2:24:17possible things, the way he gets so self important all the time.
- 2:24:21But it's also very, very endearing because he does these,
- 2:24:24you know, these things with his voice where you can have these
- 2:24:27volcanic eruptions and then he can bring it right down again.
- 2:24:30And I think Cy Hart coined the term that celestial sadness
- 2:24:37where he can bring this sort of forthright decency to the
- 2:24:40character. And so him and him and Nicola
- 2:24:44are together, especially they have this sort of, it's almost
- 2:24:48like a time travelling Pygmalion act where, you know, he's trying
- 2:24:52to teach her stuff and she's complaining and he corrects her
- 2:24:55on everything. And he's it's, it's, it's just
- 2:24:57brilliant. So yeah, I think Colin's, the
- 2:25:01overall quality of Colin's run, you know, there's ups and downs,
- 2:25:05as with every doctor, but I think he is remarkably
- 2:25:09consistent throughout. And I can see I can understand
- 2:25:12now why everyone loves him so much.
- 2:25:15So count me in that camp too. Fabulous.
- 2:25:18Matt, can we count you as camp? Oh, sorry, in that camp.
- 2:25:24Now let me see, I was about to be sentenced I believe.
- 2:25:29I I think given he has the worst start in my view of any doctor,
- 2:25:38I think like give the twin dilemma to Tom Baker, I think he
- 2:25:43would have struggled. To come back.
- 2:25:45From it, the fact that he does come back from it and is ends up
- 2:25:53sort of likeable. The bombast is balanced out with
- 2:25:57like real warmth. I think it's it's a tribute to
- 2:26:03his sort of commitment to the role and the fact that he wanted
- 2:26:08to to be Doctor Who. I think I still, I still look at
- 2:26:13the era and struggle sometimes to get past the things that I
- 2:26:19think just still don't sit well with me.
- 2:26:25I don't like the way he and Perry are written for a big
- 2:26:28chunk of time. And I think that really, I think
- 2:26:31a doctrine companion, that relationship is so key to the
- 2:26:36success of the show that if you write it in a way that they seem
- 2:26:40to hate each other's guts, even even if the actors are trying to
- 2:26:44play against as much as they can, I think that really sort of
- 2:26:47kicks the legs from under what he and Nicola Bryant are doing a
- 2:26:51lot of the time. I don't think the costume, how I
- 2:26:54know, I know there's a kind of, we've learned to love the
- 2:26:58costume, but I still think in the mid 80s I think people
- 2:27:03switched on the TV and saw that costume and just thought it's
- 2:27:07ridiculous. And I think.
- 2:27:12He's sort of haunted by a cancellation.
- 2:27:16To be fair, if Davison had stayed on for fourth year,
- 2:27:18probably would have been cancelled at the end of
- 2:27:20Davison's fourth year. And there would have been a even
- 2:27:25bigger struggle to bring it back as you would have been bringing
- 2:27:27it back with someone completely different because Davison
- 2:27:30wouldn't have stuck around. So I think given all of the
- 2:27:33things that he has to work against the fact that.
- 2:27:37He's. Still standing, he's very loved
- 2:27:40and he's gone on to have an incredibly successful run for
- 2:27:45Big Finish. Just mean that kudos to him.
- 2:27:51Bless him. He's he's, he deserves to be in
- 2:27:54the line up with the doctors. Fabulous.
- 2:27:57Joe. There was. 1.
- 2:27:59Doctor Who Magazine pole around the time of Doctor Who and the
- 2:28:04Pirates, where Colin topped the best.
- 2:28:09Doctor. Pole and I cheered.
- 2:28:12I was so happy I wanted to send him a copy of The Bloody
- 2:28:15Magazine. When I first watched Child of
- 2:28:19the Time when I was 13 and my life was in pieces at the time,
- 2:28:25my dad was a brute and a monster.
- 2:28:27My sister had had an emotional breakdown.
- 2:28:29My dad went off to prison, we lost our home.
- 2:28:32I was in a really bad place and I didn't really have a a strong
- 2:28:38role model to look up to. And it was 1993 when that trial
- 2:28:42of a Time law box that came out. And I remember buying that and
- 2:28:46watching it over and over and over again because there was
- 2:28:49this playful in like righteously indignant, smart, funny hero
- 2:28:56right at the center of Doctor Who.
- 2:28:58And I kind of think that might have been the first man I
- 2:29:01probably looked up to. It's so strange to think of it
- 2:29:03now. And I fell in love with Colin
- 2:29:05Baker like it was it was a bloke that I can absolutely just love
- 2:29:10with all my being. Then I started watching some of
- 2:29:12the earlier stories. Twin Dilemma and sorry guys, I
- 2:29:16still loved him. Like I just thought he could
- 2:29:18find the charm and the humor even when the writing wasn't
- 2:29:22giving him those opportunities. I genuinely think if there is
- 2:29:25like, you know, a piece of work that is 99.9% shit, Colin will
- 2:29:32find the point 1% of gold and turn it into about 75% gold when
- 2:29:37he's done with it. Like he had a huge amount to
- 2:29:42contend with behind the scenes in the writing.
- 2:29:45The fact that he sort of screamed his way through that
- 2:29:48era as confident as he does delivering the performances that
- 2:29:52he does and that his post Doctor Who career has been so
- 2:29:55incredible. Like he's played that convention
- 2:29:58circuit like an absolute dream. He's wonderful to listen to his
- 2:30:02aunt, Those are great. He loved the show when the show
- 2:30:05didn't love him. And now he's being paid in kind
- 2:30:08and he deserves it. And he went off and he did all
- 2:30:10that post cheapo spin off for BBV and then he's jumped over to
- 2:30:14a big finish and they revolutionized his character
- 2:30:16completely. And I just think he's got an
- 2:30:18amazing journey. And we're at a point now where
- 2:30:21Colin is one of the great doctors and he's always been one
- 2:30:24of the great doctors for me. I think he's wonderful.
- 2:30:27I think it's really interesting. When we talk about Colin,
- 2:30:30because I don't think it happens with any other Doctor, that when
- 2:30:34you talk about him and his period on the show, you
- 2:30:37constantly referring back to the production team and the people
- 2:30:41that were supporting him in there.
- 2:30:43You know, when we we'll come to it in time, Joe, when we talk
- 2:30:46about Davidson and we talk about Tom Baker and Pertwee and yeah,
- 2:30:49sure, we'll reference Barry Letts and Terence Dicks.
- 2:30:52We'll talk about the Hinchliffe era and the Williams era, but
- 2:30:55none of those of the doctors are as saddled with a production
- 2:30:59team that's in as much chaos. We don't honestly define
- 2:31:02everything based upon what was happening in that production
- 2:31:05officers. We do with Colin and Parsat
- 2:31:07because he went through such a trouble period and the show was
- 2:31:10going through such a troubled period JNT for all his pluses.
- 2:31:14And Joe, you're absolutely right.
- 2:31:16You know, you've talked about here, you've talked about on
- 2:31:18other strippers and I completely agree with you.
- 2:31:20The vast, vast, vast majority of the time he's he's casting,
- 2:31:24which is what he was, you know, obsessed with.
- 2:31:26That was he's in his bloody good threat.
- 2:31:28He's got a good feel for the show.
- 2:31:30God knows he knows how to get some publicity for that show.
- 2:31:34That's what he was focusing on. But it's the creative horses
- 2:31:38behind the era that just let it down.
- 2:31:40Saywood doesn't give a shit. He doesn't like Colin Baker
- 2:31:43personally. He doesn't clearly doesn't like
- 2:31:46the show anymore. He's fallen out with Giant C and
- 2:31:49yet he still hangs on. And he just turns that era into
- 2:31:52A certainly the first part, certainly 22.
- 2:31:55It's just so uncomfortable in so many places because you can see
- 2:31:59everything's fighting against each other.
- 2:32:02It's grim, it's nasty. And that's kind of what was the
- 2:32:04atmosphere of the in the production office must have been
- 2:32:07in that time. Just really nasty and
- 2:32:09backbiting. You know, maybe the Doctor and
- 2:32:11Perrier are mirroring Saywood and JNC because it's all neither
- 2:32:14of them want to be there and they're fighting against each
- 2:32:17other. It's just the whole thing just
- 2:32:18feels uncomfortable. And unfortunately when I think
- 2:32:21of the Colin era, that kind of toxicity I think comes through a
- 2:32:26little bit for the first part of the era I find quite difficult
- 2:32:30to judge. And then the other thing that
- 2:32:31really Colin would have benefited from in his early
- 2:32:34days, and it's really hard to judge Doctor's early
- 2:32:37performances because they all change over time.
- 2:32:39But the problem with Colin is he's got so little time that you
- 2:32:41do tend to look at every performance and judge.
- 2:32:44I think in some of those early ones.
- 2:32:45I'm thinking particularly in Twin Dilemma and Attack
- 2:32:48particularly, he's so enthusiastic to be there, he's
- 2:32:52so happy to play the doctor that I think sometimes that personal
- 2:32:56happiness and that personal joy bleeds through a little bit too
- 2:33:00much. What you see him on screen?
- 2:33:01Something like you know that bit worries in.
- 2:33:03The child's repair and tackle the side men go, you know, and
- 2:33:05passion and that dreadful speech they make him say.
- 2:33:08And then at the end of it qualifies that moment where he
- 2:33:10goes, I won't hurt you exactly. And it just sells it
- 2:33:14brilliantly. It does, but the scene that.
- 2:33:16Always kind of sticks made is him rolling around the floor at
- 2:33:19the end of attack, firing at the side.
- 2:33:21Believe he's just. You can see he's playing in the
- 2:33:24playground and he's absolutely loving it.
- 2:33:26And it's just awkward on screen. And there's no one in that
- 2:33:29production office that says Colin, tone it down a little
- 2:33:32bit, do something a bit different.
- 2:33:34So by the time we get to Verve voice, he's such a different
- 2:33:36doctors as we've talked about tonight, actually delightful.
- 2:33:40There. And all the seeds were there
- 2:33:42earlier, but he needed stronger people creatively to help him
- 2:33:46and guide him on that journey. But, you know, generally, Colin,
- 2:33:49he's a great doctor. I loved him at the time.
- 2:33:51I loved him when I first saw him.
- 2:33:52I didn't mind the costume, you know, OK, maybe I was a odd 20,
- 2:33:57whatever I was at that point. Well, I don't know.
- 2:33:59I think I was. I definitely was.
- 2:34:01I loved the costume. I thought it was great.
- 2:34:03Yes, I can see the floors in there, but there's so many
- 2:34:06problems in that era in the behind the scenes stuff that I
- 2:34:09think let Colin down. The proof is of.
- 2:34:12What you just said is in those first 50 releases of Big Finish,
- 2:34:16where suddenly there is a production team behind and
- 2:34:18people like Gary Russell, people like Jacqueline Rayner say, what
- 2:34:21do you want to do? How do you want to play it?
- 2:34:23And then they give him material like Mario Conspiracy, Jubilee,
- 2:34:26Davros, Holy Terror, Pirates Who and the pirates.
- 2:34:30And you think, fuck me, if he had these scripts on telly, this
- 2:34:33would be the Doctor, like Tom Baker.
- 2:34:36Who the hell is that? You know, I'm not so sorry about
- 2:34:39you. Can't see him in that stupid
- 2:34:40costume. Well, actually, just a MO a
- 2:34:44word. On the costume, I mean, it is
- 2:34:47dreadful, but the, the I do like that blue Cape he gets in
- 2:34:51Revelation of the Daleks, where he holds it up like the wings of
- 2:34:55a of a bird almost. And he's like, what do you
- 2:34:57think? And she's like, yuck.
- 2:34:59But he looks great. I think he looks so good in the
- 2:35:02snow with the the blue Cape and everything that if he had more
- 2:35:05blue, if Colin had more blue, which is what they gave me in
- 2:35:09real. Time and those animated
- 2:35:11adventures wasn't it was the blue suit.
- 2:35:12And originally, of course, he wanted it to be all black.
- 2:35:15Now, I'm not sure that would have worked.
- 2:35:17Almost the kind of Christopher Eccleston look.
- 2:35:20But yeah, that costume does saddle him a little bit.
- 2:35:22But I just. I think Matt's right.
- 2:35:24I think he could. Survive the costume.
- 2:35:25That now? It's almost like the pride flag
- 2:35:27costume of Doctor Who, you know? And I see.
- 2:35:30That. Now, more in conventions than
- 2:35:32any others or variations of it. You know what you just said
- 2:35:35there about Colin loving the role?
- 2:35:37Yeah. And that bleeding in.
- 2:35:38I think I can pinpoint the moment when Colin Baker is
- 2:35:42loving the role the most. But it's not until you meet.
- 2:35:45It's in Big Finish and some doctor in the Pirates, when he's
- 2:35:48singing that song with the first mate and he's up on the rigging
- 2:35:51and I can't remember what they're singing.
- 2:35:53That I am the very much. No, that's the first one.
- 2:35:56Anyway. He's up there hanging on.
- 2:35:58He's going, please, please allow me one more chance before you
- 2:36:02cut me down like a dog. And he's just having the best
- 2:36:06time of his entire life. And the best thing about it is,
- 2:36:09is all of those fans that pushed away from on the TV are utterly
- 2:36:13embracing him at this point. It's so wonderful.
- 2:36:15I'm so pleased, absolutely. So we asked our listeners to
- 2:36:19give us some comments and we've got we've got a few overall
- 2:36:21comments about Colin before we get to picking his best story.
- 2:36:25James Lark says there's amazing variety in Colin's era given its
- 2:36:29brevity. And for all the wrong headed,
- 2:36:30excessive ideas and dysfunction behind the scenes, there are
- 2:36:34considerable highs. Whatever Baker is handed, he
- 2:36:36gives it his all. A towering magnet.
- 2:36:39We've got a magnetic presence, a fine actor, a great doctor.
- 2:36:43Wow, that's a great. Epitor to Colin Michael Storm,
- 2:36:47the poorest serve actors played the Doctor in classic Who.
- 2:36:49However, Colin brings something to every scene he's in and is
- 2:36:52often the best thing in the stories.
- 2:36:54A shame say would despise him so much as under any other script
- 2:36:57editor he would have been gold. Dave Rennie says Colin is.
- 2:37:01Too angry ATV doctor for my taste in 22 but he softens in 23
- 2:37:05and on audio he's a revelation. Love his bombastic
- 2:37:08confrontations with the villain and his cuddly Uncle Softer side
- 2:37:12which comes out more as he goes on.
- 2:37:15I have heard some. People criticize that cuddly
- 2:37:17uncle actually in latter years, but they're wrong, John Arnold
- 2:37:22says. A terrific, passionate
- 2:37:23ambassador for the show whose doctor was ill served by
- 2:37:26multiple production issues. He always gives even the weakest
- 2:37:29scenes is everything to try and make them work.
- 2:37:32He was the doctor on the day it wasn't possible to get it right.
- 2:37:35Yeah, I see what you did there, John Arnold.
- 2:37:37Yeah, very good. Gabin says Colin was my doctor
- 2:37:41and badly underrated. So much enthusiasm and love for
- 2:37:43the show, which shines through despite Saywood's efforts.
- 2:37:47Charismatic, funny, lovable and capable.
- 2:37:49His sacking was the biggest misstep in Who?
- 2:37:52I've got good news and I've. Got bad news for you?
- 2:37:55Oh, Jake. He didn't have a clue, did he?
- 2:37:58And he did the good news first. The show's coming back.
- 2:38:01Yeah, you're off. Sorry, love.
- 2:38:04Mark Harrison says mad how 23 reconfigured 6 by pitting him
- 2:38:08against the ghost of Doctor Who yet to come and it's only a
- 2:38:12setup for his later, better big finishes.
- 2:38:15I've come to see him as the Frasier Crane Doctor and he's
- 2:38:18much better off since his tacky grim telly era David Gillespie
- 2:38:22practice. There's some.
- 2:38:23Poor choices with costume and character at the start.
- 2:38:25Yeah, he's clearly trying to make his Doctor work in 23.
- 2:38:28We can really see the potential of the 6th Doctor and it's a
- 2:38:32shame it had to end so suddenly. Hurrah for Big Finish Ian Banks,
- 2:38:36the only thing. That the entirety of fandom is
- 2:38:39agreed on is that Colin was right not to come back and film
- 2:38:41a regeneration scene after he was fired, except Matt, Michael
- 2:38:46and Joe Ford and the time in the Rally Hamster commentary.
- 2:38:49We all love this wonderful ambassador for the show, even if
- 2:38:52his stories are sometimes less than perfect, Gareth Bowley said
- 2:38:55the 6th. Doctor is a wonderful character.
- 2:38:57He fights for what is right and the trial typifies that.
- 2:39:00Colin is a force of nature, pushing through visually and
- 2:39:03verbally. The character is always in my
- 2:39:05heart as he feels very close to me.
- 2:39:07He's got a fabulous. Bubble butt in season 23 as
- 2:39:10well. You know.
- 2:39:11I'm sorry, big orange Michael says good doctor.
- 2:39:15Too bad about the stories. I wonder what a season or two
- 2:39:18with a more invested script editor would look like for him.
- 2:39:21The era suffers for some big ideas that aren't followed
- 2:39:23through. I still like his era, what's and
- 2:39:26all Paul Smyer said Colin. Baker was, in my view, a
- 2:39:29fantastic doctor. It was a brave decision to have
- 2:39:31him. Unlikeable at start.
- 2:39:32And yes, there's a lot of arguing with Perry. 23 is where
- 2:39:36he's at his best. It's a travesty he wasn't given
- 2:39:39another season. Nearly there, folks.
- 2:39:41Stevie. Says I think the water
- 2:39:43department should have gone more Babin the barbarian than beco
- 2:39:46the clown, Drew Clay, said Colin.
- 2:39:49Is the best doctor and was done so dirty on the show And
- 2:39:52finally. Nigel Horsler says Colin is one
- 2:39:55of the best ambassadors for the show.
- 2:39:57It's always a joy to meet him. I think I've heard that from
- 2:40:01pretty much everybody. Yeah, I've never heard about
- 2:40:03what it's said about. Colin, I mean I met him many
- 2:40:06times back in the 80s and he was always glorious and apart from
- 2:40:09obviously when people were ruining the revelations to come
- 2:40:12at the end of Trial of a Time Lord, but apart from that he was
- 2:40:15always, always upbeat, always, particularly one particularly.
- 2:40:18Grumpy fan who was looking after him at Comic Con, say he was
- 2:40:22getting impatient. But I mean, with people like I
- 2:40:24was coming up at him all day, who can blame him?
- 2:40:27I think you're allowed to do that.
- 2:40:29So we're now going to pick the best Colin Baker story.
- 2:40:33So the way this is going to work, folks, is it the first
- 2:40:35time we've done this? I shall need new camp music.
- 2:40:38You will need new camp music. So we've got the two winners
- 2:40:42from, well, we've now actually got three winners unfortunately.
- 2:40:45But what we would normally do is take the winners from the from
- 2:40:49the season polls that we've done.
- 2:40:51We would then pick two wild cards from the ones that came
- 2:40:55second. But obviously here we can't do
- 2:40:57that because we've only got two seasons to go from.
- 2:41:00So we're going to put the four of them into the mix and we're
- 2:41:03going to decide between us which comes out the best.
- 2:41:06And we're going to do that slightly differently to how we
- 2:41:08usually do this on the hamster, but I presume.
- 2:41:12Well, there is that, yeah. You've you've spoiled me to the
- 2:41:14to the tagline, but we're going to be first.
- 2:41:17Matt, did you see it? Putting.
- 2:41:19Your clothes back on. Matt, for crying out loud,
- 2:41:22Daniel's the hottest. I mean, oh, sorry, I will.
- 2:41:25I mean hottest and hottest can. Will you please move us on?
- 2:41:29I'll move you on very quickly. Right.
- 2:41:31So we've obviously got mind warp and verb voice from this series.
- 2:41:34We've got from series 22 Revelation, which is our top
- 2:41:37story. And Varos, the audience, Joe,
- 2:41:40have heard you and I bang on about Revelation and Barros, but
- 2:41:43we haven't heard Daniel and Matt's views on them.
- 2:41:45So before we go into this, guys, do you want to just give us a
- 2:41:48couple of minutes on both those stories?
- 2:41:50Daniel, let's start you on Revelation, OK?
- 2:41:54I really like Relevant Revelation.
- 2:41:56I think it's full of phantasmagorical imagery.
- 2:42:00Imagery, I don't mind that Colin and Nicola take the whole of
- 2:42:04Part 1 to get to to get to, well, to get to Part 2 because,
- 2:42:10because then Perry gets some fun stuff with the DJ and Colin gets
- 2:42:15to confront Davros. So it's all been building up to
- 2:42:17that, you know, to that, to that showdown between and the idea
- 2:42:22that Davros wants to go into business.
- 2:42:24I think it's just, it's just very funny.
- 2:42:28And yeah. And it's got a great guest cast,
- 2:42:30all those, you know, wonderful, wonderful characters.
- 2:42:35So yes, I really like Revelation and Varos.
- 2:42:39I also really like it's probably the nastiest that Doctor Who has
- 2:42:44been it where Eve is now. It also see it almost seems to
- 2:42:48be kind of approaching self loathing where it's now sort of
- 2:42:52criticizing itself, criticizing the audience, having the sort of
- 2:42:56postmodern metacometry about the viewers following on at home.
- 2:43:00But I really like it for that. It's really kind of it's got
- 2:43:03this sort of bracing nastiness to it.
- 2:43:06I will agree with Matt though, that I think between the two,
- 2:43:09probably mind warp is the the sequel and the better story
- 2:43:13between the two. Interesting.
- 2:43:15Matt, your take on Revelation Varos I.
- 2:43:19Think. Varos I wouldn't.
- 2:43:22Have put it through. Personally I think Revelation
- 2:43:25and Mark Aroni from that season are much better.
- 2:43:29I do like, I reckon Etta and the sort of meta commentary thing.
- 2:43:33That's good. I think though the plot is all
- 2:43:36over the place and it's a bit sort of Terry Nation.
- 2:43:40It is worse where if you need another 10 minutes, we'll just
- 2:43:44stick another bit of Death Zone in, you know, another challenge
- 2:43:47to to overcome. There's a kind of invasion that
- 2:43:50gets organised and then cancelled off screen.
- 2:43:53The sort of mad scientist doesn't really other than just a
- 2:43:57general area of nastiness that doesn't seem to gel that much
- 2:44:01with the other bits of the story.
- 2:44:03And I would say the direction is very Ron Jones at his not best.
- 2:44:08So there's there's a bit where a guard sort of just wanders in
- 2:44:12and then just. Which is just.
- 2:44:17Awful. There's a bit where the doctors
- 2:44:19like going don't don't let the vines touch you for an instant
- 2:44:22while Jason Connery crawls all over them.
- 2:44:24A bit like rather the sort of critique you had if the sort of
- 2:44:27finale of the mysterious planet. So I kind of think I find
- 2:44:32Vengeance embarrassed Why disappointing compared to Mind
- 2:44:37Warp. It does have the one line
- 2:44:38though. Matt, that inspires our
- 2:44:40relationship, yours and mine. I want to hear you scream until
- 2:44:45I'm deaf. With pleasure.
- 2:44:50I'm not going to ask what that noise is all about.
- 2:44:53Let's move very swiftly on. Oh, very.
- 2:44:55Briefly, just just my favorite bit of Pharos actually is, is
- 2:45:00that bit where the doctor and Perry pop their heads around the
- 2:45:02corner. Hello.
- 2:45:04Hi encapsulates the doctrine Perry in one tiny, tiny moment.
- 2:45:11And that is their whole relationship sort of summed up.
- 2:45:14It's just brilliant, just perfect.
- 2:45:17Revelation. I think that this, the direction
- 2:45:22is so much better than Varys. It's great baroque direction.
- 2:45:25It's really, it's all like almost like a gothic pop video
- 2:45:29with scrolling screens and Graham Harper pulling out all
- 2:45:33the stops. You can kind of see say what's
- 2:45:37really letting himself get into the story and really enjoying
- 2:45:40himself with it. And you could kind of see how
- 2:45:44that could work if if you wanted to go further down that route.
- 2:45:48I think some of the dialogue is is really quite grisly, but
- 2:45:51funny. Like, she's already started to
- 2:45:53froth. On the downside, picking your
- 2:45:58nose. On the downside, it is kind of
- 2:46:03just like a better version of Attack of the Cybermen with like
- 2:46:07lots of people, lots of double acts, lots of people dying, and
- 2:46:10Doctor and Perry being a little bit peripheral to the action and
- 2:46:16not not necessarily having a great deal of interaction with
- 2:46:21the wider cast. Although at least the Doctor
- 2:46:23does come up with a solution to the galaxy's food crisis, so he
- 2:46:27does do some good for once. Unlike Attack the Side of it I
- 2:46:32did try. And fight for Mark and Ronnie.
- 2:46:34You know Matt, but no one else was having it.
- 2:46:37I tried so hard. I think he came third.
- 2:46:39It it 4th on gamely didn't it? Right.
- 2:46:43Sorry very briefly that. That part Part 1 has a brilliant
- 2:46:47kind of well, just before the cliffhanger when the statue
- 2:46:50falls on him, but it has a brilliant moment, a Collin
- 2:46:53moment where he he realizes he's not going to regenerate when he
- 2:46:56sees the statue of himself and he thinks that that's that's
- 2:46:59where his life ends. And it's just a very marvellous
- 2:47:04kind of soliloquy. And he's so wistful when he sort
- 2:47:07of he talks to himself and Perry's trying to find all these
- 2:47:11ways out of it and he's just almost resigned to it.
- 2:47:14It's, it's very, it's almost like if, if if you take name of
- 2:47:17the Doctor and squash it down into a single minute, much more
- 2:47:21concise, much more enjoyable. My.
- 2:47:23My my favorite looks. Like no, go on, that's it.
- 2:47:28I was done. My.
- 2:47:30My favorite thing about Revelation of the Dialects is
- 2:47:33that JNT wanted salons Olivia they have muted that he's a
- 2:47:40sausage role and he wanted. Loris Olivia.
- 2:47:46He wanted Loris Olivia to say to Colin Baker, You wouldn't think
- 2:47:50I once. Looked like you.
- 2:47:55Bless them, do you know? I know I've.
- 2:47:57Already spoken about revelation and dies, but my my love for
- 2:48:00Tasman Baker has no I cannot stop the bit before she dies and
- 2:48:04she wanders into the corridor and goes oh, why did I do it?
- 2:48:08It's so funny, it's so terrible. It's.
- 2:48:14Just delirious. There is so much to laugh.
- 2:48:17At in this era, even amongst all the darkness.
- 2:48:20Even when you're sometimes laughing at it rather than with
- 2:48:22it, well, it's something. Right.
- 2:48:25So we've got our four stories, we've got Revelation, we've got
- 2:48:28Varos, we've got mind Warp, we've got verb voids.
- 2:48:31What we're going to do now is you are going to select two
- 2:48:35stories or whoever goes 1st and you are going to tell us why one
- 2:48:40deserves to go through and one as opposed to the other one.
- 2:48:44We've had no prep time. For this, no prep time for this
- 2:48:47because we didn't know which. Stories would end up whichever
- 2:48:51story you select that's going to go through to the other three.
- 2:48:54If the three of us agree with you, your story of choice will
- 2:48:57go through to the next round. If we disagree with you, then
- 2:49:02we're putting the other story through.
- 2:49:03So there's only going to be 3 rounds here with four stories,
- 2:49:06so pick your stories very carefully.
- 2:49:09Both so pretty I don't know if. I'll be able to disagree with
- 2:49:11either of them, but let's try it out.
- 2:49:13So, Matt? Let's start with you pick your
- 2:49:16story of choice and pit it against the story you want to
- 2:49:19send home. Well, I'm going to pick the two,
- 2:49:21Philip. Martins and my story of choice
- 2:49:23is mind warp. I think it should go through the
- 2:49:25most interesting bit of trial. It's got some great it's got 1
- 2:49:29Jones being really good at directions.
- 2:49:30It's got some Philip Martin being really good at characters.
- 2:49:34It's got some really great moments of, of Colin Baker going
- 2:49:40mad and acting a bit tipsy. And it's got Brian Blessed.
- 2:49:45And I think you can pay that to Benjamin Sombarros where it's
- 2:49:52Juan Jones at his worst direction.
- 2:49:54It's a bit of a wandering, meandering story.
- 2:49:58There are bits of it that are kind of that don't really make
- 2:50:03any sense. And, and there's like a long
- 2:50:05section of the doctor meant to be rescuing Perry because it's
- 2:50:09really urgently rescues Perry. And he just like stands about
- 2:50:12Wittering on about something while Perry gets turned into a
- 2:50:15bird or something like, oh, for God's sake, just go and rescue
- 2:50:17the woman. But it, it, it kind of lacks the
- 2:50:21tension that mind warp has. So mind warp goes through for me
- 2:50:25when you're not. Varos doesn't get chucked in an
- 2:50:28acid bath. Good pitch.
- 2:50:30So let's start with Daniel. Are you going to agree with that
- 2:50:33or disagree? Yeah, I'm, I'm.
- 2:50:35Won over by Matt's argument, for one.
- 2:50:38Actually, it made it just made me think of one very specific
- 2:50:41reason why is that in, in Varos? In Varos, There's it's forgive
- 2:50:46me for being so shallow, but there's a bit where, well,
- 2:50:50Perry's wearing this, this basically a blue version of her
- 2:50:53attack of the Cyberman costume. And, and I was going through the
- 2:50:57story and I'm like, OK, this is maybe not too sexualized.
- 2:51:01And then you get to the bit where she gets strapped down and
- 2:51:03turned into a bird. Her breasts.
- 2:51:06Are. Covering like the literal left
- 2:51:09side of the frame. You contrast that with Mindwalk
- 2:51:12and she's also strapped down and it's just as troubling and
- 2:51:15upsetting. But I think it's handled more
- 2:51:18powerfully and it has a a greater purpose to it than than
- 2:51:23something that is just reversed at the end of barrels literally
- 2:51:26within probably the next scene. I never thought the breast.
- 2:51:30Factor would be something that that went towards a strictly
- 2:51:33vote, but hey, the text or sort of breast factor.
- 2:51:38Joe So. It's.
- 2:51:41One for. Mind warp.
- 2:51:44Are you going to agree with that?
- 2:51:45Yeah, I am actually. Yes, for all the reasons said
- 2:51:49and I think Ventilon virus fizzles out of the end like
- 2:51:52massive with that off screen invasion and they just sort of
- 2:51:54go well, see you later. Well, you're not much better
- 2:51:57than the people we've just murdered, but do your best.
- 2:51:59Whereas mind warp ends with the death of Perry, the time was
- 2:52:02exposed and the dust furious. So you know, on those terms
- 2:52:05alone, you leave mind warp in a far better place than you leave,
- 2:52:09which is a virus. And I also.
- 2:52:12Completely agree. Yeah, I mean, Mind Warp just
- 2:52:15feels such a Polish, Polish production from the direction,
- 2:52:18the writing, the storyline, everything.
- 2:52:21Just the acting crack because there's some terrible, terrible
- 2:52:24acting in Barrows. Step forward Jason Connery or
- 2:52:27someone truly loathsome such as you, Quillham.
- 2:52:32It's just it feels like Barrows does feel a little bit.
- 2:52:36I like it, but it does feel like they're kind of making it up as
- 2:52:39they go along a little bit. How can we stretch this out a
- 2:52:41bit further to get to 45 minutes?
- 2:52:44Whereas Mind Warp feels much, much tighter and like the author
- 2:52:48actually knows what he's doing. So yeah, I completely agree.
- 2:52:51So Faros is the first to fall Daniel over to you.
- 2:52:56You're left with Mind Warp. You can pick that again if you
- 2:52:59want. The Voids and Revelation pick
- 2:53:01one against another. OK, I'll do Veroids against
- 2:53:09Revelation because as much as I enjoy Revelation, I think it's,
- 2:53:17well again, for a quite simple reason.
- 2:53:19Revelation is written by Eric Saywood and it's not written by
- 2:53:23Pip and Jane Baker. So on that strength alone, I
- 2:53:26think voids, I think also voids repeat rewards, repeats viewings
- 2:53:32because you've got, it feels fresh.
- 2:53:34You've got a new Doctor, a new companion, you're chucked into
- 2:53:37the middle of the action. And then again, it's this kind
- 2:53:39of story that I just, I, I just hope one day that I, I turn on
- 2:53:43the TV and they're rerunning old Doctor Who again on UK gold or
- 2:53:47whatever and terror of the Vervoids just shows up.
- 2:53:50And that is just the kind of slot that it's made for.
- 2:53:54So terror, terror of the Vervoids.
- 2:53:57Brilliant A. Brave.
- 2:53:58Choice it's given that Revelation usually wins all the
- 2:54:01polls of the Collin story. But Hamster's very good at
- 2:54:03changing things. Matt, do you gonna agree with
- 2:54:06that? Do you prefer Vervoids over
- 2:54:08Revelation? This is this is tough.
- 2:54:11I think everything Dan said is right.
- 2:54:15I think Vervoids hip and Jane versus Revelation, Eric Taywood,
- 2:54:20who has to take his share of the blame for the things that we
- 2:54:24criticized earlier about 6 Doctors era.
- 2:54:27Vervoids got Mel, Revelation has got Perry, I think I prefer Mel.
- 2:54:36Perry, which is. Maybe a controversial.
- 2:54:38Opinion, but I think her and the sick doctor have such a great
- 2:54:41relationship from the off. I think Verboids wins out.
- 2:54:45Doctors great in Vervoids. He's fine in Revelation, but
- 2:54:49doesn't he does get some great moments.
- 2:54:51Dan's pointing out that lovely moment in front of the tune of
- 2:54:53some nice moments of comedy while they wander around in the
- 2:54:56snow, but he's not as integral to the stories.
- 2:54:58Not the sort of propulsive force in the story that is in
- 2:55:01Vervoids. But the direction of.
- 2:55:04Revelation is so good and I don't think the voice can hold
- 2:55:08it a candle to just the production of it.
- 2:55:11I'm. Going to have to.
- 2:55:15Go with the voice because of the male factor and the better role
- 2:55:19for the Doctor. That's hard.
- 2:55:23Go. I think this one's going to.
- 2:55:24Be a hard one for you. It's really hard.
- 2:55:27Man, when you pick those two, I was cursing your name.
- 2:55:30But in my head, I think Revelation of the Dykes is one
- 2:55:34of the best executed Doctor Who stories ever.
- 2:55:37And I'm including the new series.
- 2:55:39I think Graham Harper's direction of that it, you know,
- 2:55:42you think. You can't really have.
- 2:55:43A camera to it. However, I think Terra the Vervo
- 2:55:50is I have the most fun with possibly.
- 2:55:55Any other classic? Doctor Who story, I just think
- 2:55:58it's a joy to watch. It's like pure, if I'm having a
- 2:56:01shit day and, you know, I work in retail, I have quite a few of
- 2:56:04those. Would I come home and watch, you
- 2:56:06know, Davros's grandiose scheme of using cannibalism in order to
- 2:56:10save famine in the universe? Or would I watch Honour Blackman
- 2:56:13camping it up in a murder mystery and Space Rim by Pip and
- 2:56:16Jane Baker? I would definitely do the
- 2:56:19latter. And I secretly really want.
- 2:56:21Terror. The Vervoys to win.
- 2:56:23So I'm putting Vervoys through Go.
- 2:56:27I'm going to pick. On this statement you made just
- 2:56:30at the beginning of that summary, you said Revelation is
- 2:56:32the best directed Doctor Who story of all time.
- 2:56:36I will take the words Doctor Who out of that.
- 2:56:38It's one of the best directed stories.
- 2:56:40It's not a Doctor Who story. There is no story.
- 2:56:44Vervoids is. Vervoids is a solid Doctor Who
- 2:56:47story, Yes. OK, it's a bit traditional.
- 2:56:52You could even argue it's a little bit pedestrian in places,
- 2:56:55certainly compared to the verve of the good bits of Revelation.
- 2:57:00But Revelation is just a meandering set of set pieces
- 2:57:03involving characters that aren't the Doctor and the Companion.
- 2:57:07It doesn't really tell a story. So for me, Vervoids is a much
- 2:57:12more coherent story. So I'm going to put Vervoids
- 2:57:16through as well. I'm not sure when.
- 2:57:19There's Graham Harper involved. You could ever say revelational
- 2:57:21meanders. Maybe the story wise.
- 2:57:24Story wise, story, not visually, not visually, yeah, a story wise
- 2:57:29it meanders Gap. No, absolutely.
- 2:57:32Same as there's more. Verve in verb.
- 2:57:34There are more verve in. Voids so it's interesting we
- 2:57:37have ditched the two season 22 stories and we are we should
- 2:57:41have just kept going. Well.
- 2:57:44This was the choice we came to before which is better, Vervoids
- 2:57:47or mind warp? And there is only one way to
- 2:57:49find out and it is a fight. So who's going to be brave
- 2:57:53enough? Joe, I think it ought to be one
- 2:57:54of our two guests that pitched the final choice, Daniel Mapp.
- 2:57:59Who wants to take proposing? Which is better, Mind warp or
- 2:58:03Vervoids? And bear in mind, you won't get
- 2:58:06a vote if you propose that. You've got to just win us over
- 2:58:09with your charm. Easy.
- 2:58:15Man, do you want to go? Thanks, man.
- 2:58:19I was just. I was just you.
- 2:58:20Beat me to like being polite. Right, I am going.
- 2:58:25To pitch for mind. Walk.
- 2:58:28And I'm going to pitch for it because I think the drama that
- 2:58:33it has in the trial season and in the full Colin Baker era is
- 2:58:39the greatest drama of all. I'm not even the biggest fan of
- 2:58:44like the Perry death, but the drama of that moment, the drama
- 2:58:48of the finale is superb, but it's also incredibly funny.
- 2:58:53I mean, we, we, we've talked about how funny some of the
- 2:58:57other stories in like Revelation can be.
- 2:59:00But some of the lines that that Kev gets the, the comedy
- 2:59:05sequence of, of Kev getting his brain transplanted into the sort
- 2:59:09of fisherman and then starting to have like a weird fish
- 2:59:13fetish. Did you have the fish?
- 2:59:14Magnificent. It's got.
- 2:59:20It's got. The the brilliance or Patronia
- 2:59:24it's got, it's got Crozier, who's just a brilliant
- 2:59:27character. I think it's got darkness, it's
- 2:59:33got frights, it's got laughs. It's got a great, great guest
- 2:59:39cast. And I think when I look at when
- 2:59:45I look at Vervoids, I see it's a little bit overlit compared to
- 2:59:53Mind Warp. It's not quite as well directed.
- 2:59:57I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder around Colin being
- 3:00:00denied his Hercule Poirot finale moment.
- 3:00:05I love it. But I think mine walks just all
- 3:00:09around the stronger piece of work and it deserves to win.
- 3:00:15Joe, I think you and I. Are here on this so you and I'll
- 3:00:17go next and we'll leave Daniel to be the final.
- 3:00:21Arbiter. Of the Colin Baker era.
- 3:00:24So go for it Joe Vervoids or mind warp.
- 3:00:26I think I know which way you're going to fall, but let's go for
- 3:00:28it. That's a really good.
- 3:00:30Case you made there and. Vervoids is.
- 3:00:34What I've always. Loved and I still love and Mind
- 3:00:37Warp is 1 where every time I watched it I even loved it or
- 3:00:41hated it for different reasons. And in the last couple of years
- 3:00:44I've learned to just love it no matter how insidious and dark it
- 3:00:49gets. And now I've embraced the
- 3:00:51ending. It is the dramatic high point of
- 3:00:55Colin Baker's time. That voice is so fun.
- 3:01:01It's like a 90 minute wank. It's so fun.
- 3:01:07Oh, if only you'd said that. Before Joe, they could have.
- 3:01:08Put that on the poster. Any of us, if I hadn't.
- 3:01:12Heard all the great arguments about mine today.
- 3:01:14I would have put the screw easily.
- 3:01:18And primarily because I know Stephen Brzevinski, who's my
- 3:01:22move is his least favorite story of all time, will spit out his
- 3:01:25team. When I say my walk to win, I do
- 3:01:29think it's very, very funny in places as well.
- 3:01:32The skedaddle test, while we've been through real.
- 3:01:35Yeah, my walk, my walk. That's not what I was.
- 3:01:37Expecting so actually, I'll come to Daniel Max then, because that
- 3:01:41wasn't the way I was expecting you to go.
- 3:01:44Daniel mind warp was her voids. Well, I remember.
- 3:01:48During mind warp, well, there's that exchange that it's not
- 3:01:54seal, it's not cave, it's that other that other slug that's
- 3:01:57with him, can't remember his name.
- 3:02:01But anyway, he he's always complaining about Brian blessed
- 3:02:04being so loud and and and then and then he spares his life and
- 3:02:11he's like, oh, thank you for your life.
- 3:02:14It was nothing, no shouting, so on.
- 3:02:17The basis of that exchange? Alone yeah as you guys say it's
- 3:02:22so funny it's there is a lot of humor in there too even though
- 3:02:25we've. We've gone over it several times
- 3:02:27that as soon as the Doctor Perry touched down on that planet, you
- 3:02:31get the sense that something is very wrong and that dread never
- 3:02:35really leads you, but the the humor is there too.
- 3:02:39So so that and that is, you know, the the kind of basis of a
- 3:02:42Doctor Who story is to. Not.
- 3:02:44Judge So to be there's the there's the humor and there's
- 3:02:48also the scary bit or the the dread, if you prefer.
- 3:02:51And yeah, as as as problematic as Perry's fate is, we're still
- 3:02:55talking about it today. It's still discussed in in
- 3:02:59Doctor Who's fan circles. And that's the value of a of a
- 3:03:03strong, a strong, a strong drama and strong and a strong script
- 3:03:08and a strong performance. So.
- 3:03:10So yeah, mind warp. Right.
- 3:03:13So, my vote. Will be superfluous because mind
- 3:03:16warp is one, but I would have picked mind Warp as well because
- 3:03:18I just think it's an absolute highlight of the 80s.
- 3:03:24We've we've said everything we can say.
- 3:03:25But Joe, you know, I'm a big Steven Moffat fan and I can see
- 3:03:28a lot of kind of Steven Moffat tramps in it.
- 3:03:30It's dark, but it's funny. It's almost like the classic
- 3:03:33series version of world and often time that's got that
- 3:03:36constant sense of dread. It's very funny, but it's also
- 3:03:39very dark. We end up with a loss of a
- 3:03:41companion. There are parallels there if you
- 3:03:43if you search, but I'm seeing more sort of Chris.
- 3:03:46Chibnul, you know, it's over complicated, it's dramatic, and
- 3:03:49in the end none of it makes any sense whatsoever and none of
- 3:03:52it's paid off well. Oh no, I've seen a bit of
- 3:03:54Moffett as well, because he can't kill off his, can he?
- 3:03:57I wish I hadn't about to damn that.
- 3:03:58Haven't you so to wine back in compared to mind walk, I'm
- 3:04:02Philip Martyr. It's a brilliant script.
- 3:04:04It's just someone said it earlier as well.
- 3:04:06And it's a damn shame that they never kept those tapes as one of
- 3:04:09the best incidental scores the show ever gave them as well.
- 3:04:13Yeah. And it's it's just.
- 3:04:14Moody music, you feel it, you feel the tension through the
- 3:04:18music largely as well. So it's brilliantly lit, it's
- 3:04:21very well directed, unbelievably by Ron Jones.
- 3:04:25But it's just the lighting, the music, the tone, there's just an
- 3:04:29unnatural atmosphere about it that really sets it apart from
- 3:04:32other Doctor Who stories. And whilst I like Vervoids,
- 3:04:35Matt, you write it is quite overlay.
- 3:04:37There are slight shades of CBBC about Vervoids, as much as I
- 3:04:41love it, and I do love it, it's great fun.
- 3:04:44But you know, Mind warp is a heavyweight against a
- 3:04:48lightweight but to avoid. So for me it's Mind warp as
- 3:04:51well. So mind Warp is strictly come
- 3:04:54hamster's favorite Colin Baker story.
- 3:04:57So through you DWM poll, can we just all agree that at.
- 3:05:00One point that it's Matrona Carney that sort of pushed it to
- 3:05:03the top. Oh, without shadow, do you push
- 3:05:05me to denounce you? She's just wonderful.
- 3:05:09Even the little. Look, she does when she's in the
- 3:05:10background, she's another one that's giving it her all.
- 3:05:13She's so cab in. That mad dark story, you know,
- 3:05:16Do you wish to serve? Me A Perry.
- 3:05:19She's great. Anyway, sorry, sorry, let's end
- 3:05:22this show. We've got a winner.
- 3:05:24Fantastic. So the.
- 3:05:25Best Colin going through to the very final at the end is Mind
- 3:05:29Warp. No one will see that one coming.
- 3:05:32So all it takes is for us to thank our guests tonight for
- 3:05:36coming to an excellent conclusion.
- 3:05:38Thank you, Daniel. Thank you, Matt.
- 3:05:40Would you like to promote anything you're on or direct
- 3:05:43people to where they can find you online?
- 3:05:45Let's start with Daniel. Yes, OK.
- 3:05:49Well, if you would like to to to see even more of me, you could
- 3:05:56find me on Twitter at Daniel under score.
- 3:05:58Rawnsley. That's RAWNSLEY.
- 3:06:03And Speaking of mind warp, I, I'm, I've wrote a Doctor Who
- 3:06:09target style novelization of the much unloved New Earth, where
- 3:06:15you can now listen on Spotify in various audio readings of that.
- 3:06:20Depending on when this comes out, there'll probably be
- 3:06:23another instalment dropping soon, so check that out.
- 3:06:27Yeah, that is great. Stuff.
- 3:06:30Matt. I have done a write up of every
- 3:06:34individual episode, so like all 14 episodes of trial
- 3:06:39individually and every other episode of Doctor Who.
- 3:06:42My website which is Matthew michael.org or you can follow me
- 3:06:47on X or Twitter. Your miles may vary.
- 3:06:51It's the under score cybermapped with two TS.
- 3:06:55The under score cybermapped on Twitter.
- 3:06:59And they can also hear you, of course.
- 3:07:00On possibly the campus episodes of Hamster with a blunt pen
- 3:07:03knife, I'd also confirm. The whole of the whole of Doctor
- 3:07:08Who fandom. And bear in mind you know that
- 3:07:1198% of them are queer. Sorry Daniel.
- 3:07:13He gives the best head in fandom as well.
- 3:07:15What an accolade. And trust me, Joe, Joe's got
- 3:07:21Joe's got plenty of competition to line you up against.
- 3:07:25Fantastic. So on that on that shocking
- 3:07:27revelation for the evening, it just lets us thank our guests
- 3:07:31for tonight. Joe, next episode we are doing
- 3:07:34Series 3 with David Tennant. Yes.
- 3:07:37Oh. 2007. Is our next episode.
- 3:07:40There's so much gold in there. Absolute what?
- 3:07:42We've had gold. Tonight we've had Colin, so
- 3:07:45thank you went through. Thank you guys.
- 3:07:48Trial of a. Time Lord we love.
- 3:07:49It so thank you all guys very much.
- 3:07:51Thank you for listening and until next time Joe, just need
- 3:07:55to tell people keep. Good night everyone.
- 3:08:18The the.
