Latest / Inside West Palm Beach / Get Hurricane Ready: How To Trim Trees And Landscaping For Storm Season
Transcript
- 0:09Welcome to the City Center podcast from West Palm Beach,
- 0:11Florida.
- 0:12I'm Jerry Marcelo.
- 0:15Experts agree that the best way to minimize the impact of tropical storms and hurricanes is to be prepared.
- 0:22That means having a plan,
- 0:23gathering supplies and preparing your home for whatever the storm will bring.
- 0:28But while we focus on our homes,
- 0:30we often overlook our lawns and landscaping leaves,
- 0:34branches and other vegetation can become your number one headache during and after a storm breaking windows,
- 0:41clogging storm drains and generally wreaking havoc.
- 0:45The city wants to help its residents get ahead of this occurring problem with a program that gets your lawn in shape long before the first storm clouds threaten.
- 0:54Joining me today to talk about it is Calvin Williams of the city's public works department and Greg Mihalko,
- 1:00an isa certified arborist with the city of West Palm Beach.
- 1:03Gentlemen,
- 1:04welcome.
- 1:05Thank you.
- 1:06Welcome,
- 1:07Calvin.
- 1:07Let's start with the basics.
- 1:09Tell us about the amnesty days program.
- 1:11What does it do?
- 1:12When is it happening?
- 1:13Uh First of all,
- 1:14Jerry,
- 1:15I just wanna appreciate the opportunity to share this vital information with the residents here at the city of West Palm Beach regarding Amnesty week.
- 1:21Embassy Week is May 6th to May 17th.
- 1:25This is uh the time where the residents can pre prepare for the upcoming hurricane season.
- 1:31The city is offering residents the chance to dispose of any unlimited amount of vegetation during amnesty week.
- 1:37Residents can cut their vegetation and place a curbside in front of their property for our sanitation team to uh collect it on their scheduled service day at no additional cost.
- 1:49That is very important to note that only tree branches not exceeding 4 ft in length and stumps no larger than 12 inches in diameter will be accepted.
- 1:59All right.
- 2:00Well,
- 2:00you know,
- 2:00you mentioned how important it is to gather vegetation before hurricane season arrives,
- 2:07Greg.
- 2:08Why is that important?
- 2:10Well,
- 2:11um I would like to start off with saying that even though uh we allow the additional uh trimming of trees and everything for the amnesty and the unlimited amount to put out that um,
- 2:23it is important to trim any dead dying or disease branches off a tree,
- 2:27but not to over prune the tree just because we have an amnesty day.
- 2:31Doesn't mean that you want to trim your trees so heavily that you actually harm the trees and you're actually causing more,
- 2:40um,
- 2:41more of a problem and more of a hazard down the road for your trees than if they were properly pruned.
- 2:46So,
- 2:47keep that in mind when you're thinking about the amnesty and putting out the branch and,
- 2:52and everything.
- 2:52Don't over prune anything,
- 2:54don't over prune anything.
- 2:55But why do we need to prune at all?
- 2:59In some cases if a tree has been properly pruned,
- 3:02uh in the past year,
- 3:04you may not need to prune your tree at all,
- 3:06but you do need to prune and look at if not prune,
- 3:10but at least have somebody um,
- 3:12certified,
- 3:13look at any dead branches,
- 3:15any dying branches,
- 3:17um,
- 3:18any issues that the tree may have down the road that may cause a problem.
- 3:23Those are the things you want to address,
- 3:25not just arbitrarily pruning,
- 3:27just for the sake of pruning because it's hurricane season is not always the best thing to do.
- 3:32Absolutely.
- 3:33And we'll be talking more about the precise way of properly pruning trees and shrubs and all that.
- 3:39But I guess,
- 3:40uh,
- 3:40you know,
- 3:40Calvin,
- 3:41the,
- 3:41the idea is to sort of trim back your landscape and your,
- 3:46your,
- 3:47your lawn uh prior to the storm.
- 3:49So when a storm does come,
- 3:52we don't have a lot of material flying through the air.
- 3:54Would that be correct?
- 3:55That is absolutely correct.
- 3:56Uh We just want to look out for the safety of the,
- 3:59your,
- 4:00yourself and your property and your neighbors as well.
- 4:03Uh Once a name hurricane is named,
- 4:06uh,
- 4:06we ask,
- 4:07please do not cut and put place curbside for pickup.
- 4:10Ok.
- 4:10That's important.
- 4:11You don't want to be doing this as a storm is approaching.
- 4:13That's gonna be a zero.
- 4:15That's,
- 4:15that's not what we want to do.
- 4:17We want people to get ahead of time.
- 4:18That's why the amnesty week does exist.
- 4:21That's absolutely correct.
- 4:22And the dates are May 6th through May 17th,
- 4:25May 6th through 17.
- 4:27We'll be saying that again.
- 4:28That'll be a period of time when residents,
- 4:31people in the city of West Palm Beach.
- 4:33Right.
- 4:33Not just anywhere.
- 4:34That is correct.
- 4:35The city of West Palm Beach residents and,
- 4:38and also I just like to touch on this as well.
- 4:40Amnesty week is just for vegetation,
- 4:43only bulk items will not be accepted.
- 4:45Uh,
- 4:45commercial accounts,
- 4:47neither or paid contractors are not eligible for this offer.
- 4:52Ok.
- 4:52Let's let's define that just so everybody's on the same page.
- 4:55Residents,
- 4:56homeowners,
- 4:56people who have homes in,
- 4:58in city of West Palm Beach,
- 4:59you're ok.
- 5:00No big deal.
- 5:01But if you are say a commercial landscaper,
- 5:04that would not be ok to leave it on the side of the street.
- 5:07That is correct.
- 5:08Ok.
- 5:08Now we know that you said earlier that the,
- 5:11the size of like a branch that you should be leaving on the side of the street,
- 5:15what about four inches,
- 5:164 4 ft 4 ft in length,
- 5:194 ft in length and you can leave out the side of the street.
- 5:22Obviously,
- 5:22branches are a big deal branches break in a hurricane.
- 5:25There are flying projectiles traveling in in excess of 50 to 100 miles an hour that could do a lot of damage.
- 5:32But it's important when you do trim your tree that you do it in the right way.
- 5:37Greg,
- 5:37tell us a little bit about how to know when,
- 5:40what,
- 5:40how much to cut off.
- 5:42Well,
- 5:43OK.
- 5:43That is,
- 5:44that is the tricky question and that's where a certified arborist um comes into play.
- 5:49So in order to trim your trees properly,
- 5:53they have to be trimmed at a,
- 5:55a certain location,
- 5:56which is called the branch bark ridge.
- 5:58You wanna trim at the branch bark ridge,
- 6:01not cutting through the branch bark ridge,
- 6:03but at the branch bark ridge to remove any branch properly.
- 6:07What this does is it allows the tree to form a wall inside right around that cut area,
- 6:15right where the branch is attached and it forms what's called cod,
- 6:19that's compartmentalization of disease in trees.
- 6:23So when you prune a branch off,
- 6:25you're now opening a wound in that tree for disease and rot and insects to infect that tree properly pruned.
- 6:33This will form a wall inside the tree called the coated that will um stop that rot and disease from going further into the tree.
- 6:43It will stop it at that point.
- 6:44Also on the outside of the tree,
- 6:47people notice that it starts to what they call heel over and you'll see at the cut uh these um this rim forming around the cut,
- 6:57well,
- 6:57that's called wound wood and that forms over the cut when it's properly pruned,
- 7:02again,
- 7:02sealing that uh compartmentalization.
- 7:06See,
- 7:06that's part of the process of sealing that wound off.
- 7:09So it doesn't infect the rest of the trees.
- 7:12If you're just reducing a branch,
- 7:14you have to take it back to what,
- 7:16what's called the terminal bud.
- 7:18Now,
- 7:18that allows for the branch to regenerate at that point properly with a strong branch coming out.
- 7:26So it's attached properly and it's not going to be a weak joint.
- 7:30So,
- 7:30would you,
- 7:31would you suggest that,
- 7:32that people uh because we're talking about a lot of terminology and you know,
- 7:36and,
- 7:36and locations that are very important to the health of the tree.
- 7:39Are you suggesting that we should,
- 7:40so people should reach out to an arborist to help them with this or is there something that they can read online?
- 7:45There are,
- 7:45there is a lot of information on the isa website,
- 7:49the International Society of our bro culture on their website.
- 7:52Um They're the ones uh which is um where I'm certified through and that is the certifications that we hold as a certified arborist is recognized throughout the world.
- 8:02It's a,
- 8:02is a uh international certification.
- 8:06Um So there's um there's branches all over the world and we have this,
- 8:11the Florida chapter which um has a listing of certified arborist.
- 8:16You can check the website,
- 8:17find a certified arborist through them.
- 8:20Uh You can read up on the information,
- 8:22but uh it is very important to be trimming at the proper place because if,
- 8:27if you don't,
- 8:28you will get weak branching,
- 8:30you'll get a lot of,
- 8:31a lot of things happening to the tree that should not be happening,
- 8:34that will make that tree weaker down the road.
- 8:36Yeah.
- 8:36So it's very important that we do trim,
- 8:39but you need to trim with knowledge and know exactly where the cut should go again.
- 8:44Turning to a certified Arris yourself would be something that would be very helpful.
- 8:48Uh,
- 8:48but failing that or if you don't have access to someone who can,
- 8:51who has a knowledge to do that online,
- 8:53there's a lot of good information that can be had as well.
- 8:56There is definitely information online through,
- 8:58like I said,
- 8:58through the isa uh,
- 9:00through the,
- 9:01uh,
- 9:01I I website,
- 9:02um,
- 9:03research has been done and there's,
- 9:06uh,
- 9:06information through I,
- 9:07I,
- 9:07uh,
- 9:08the Mounts Building has,
- 9:09um,
- 9:10uh,
- 9:10the,
- 9:11um,
- 9:12an arborist out there that can,
- 9:13that can help.
- 9:14So there's a lot of resources that you can,
- 9:17um,
- 9:18look for and find that will help you learn how to trim a tree properly or at least get the knowledge that if somebody does come out and offer you a really cheap price,
- 9:29look out for that because they're going,
- 9:31their chances are they're gonna hat rack the tree and leave the,
- 9:35leave the debris for you to clean up.
- 9:37Um,
- 9:38got to be really careful with that and you'll have problems down the road and then it will cost you more money to have the tree trim properly to try and alleviate some of the damage that was done.
- 9:49Now,
- 9:50that's an important pro tip.
- 9:51Don't go to the guy who just happened to be wandering the streets one and want to cut down your tree for 10 bucks or something.
- 9:58You got to get someone who knows what they're doing to properly trim it so that it stays healthy has the best opportunity to uh avoid infection and,
- 10:06and issues later down the road and frankly be eat stronger when a storm does come.
- 10:11Correct.
- 10:11Um Long branches and,
- 10:13and being very tall or being a,
- 10:15a large canopy tree is not necessarily a problem.
- 10:19Branches tend into when the wind blows.
- 10:22If it's pruned properly and thinned out correctly,
- 10:25the wind will blow through it.
- 10:27And as the branches,
- 10:28uh as branches uh wave in the wind,
- 10:31they're gonna beat up against each other and buffer each other.
- 10:35And that helps keep the branches from breaking.
- 10:37So you don't want to take too much off.
- 10:39Otherwise you're gonna have branches just waving around in a breeze with no buffering to help them stop from breaking.
- 10:46So they rely on each other to uh stop the breakage.
- 10:50Those are great tips.
- 10:51Now,
- 10:51what else can you offer us?
- 10:53Well,
- 10:53as we talked about hat racking before,
- 10:56um again,
- 10:56I want to stress that hat racking is probably one of the worst things you can do to your tree,
- 11:03it causes the tree to stress out and when the tree gets stressed out,
- 11:07it starts to shoot out uh leaves and branches and all the wrong locations,
- 11:13the branching will be improperly attached,
- 11:16making for weak branching down the road in the future.
- 11:19Um So that those are the branches that are gonna fall off during a storm.
- 11:24Those are the branches that are gonna be unsafe to be standing under.
- 11:27Those are the branches that you don't want to have on your tree.
- 11:31Um It also um it all hat racking can also uh cause the tree to get sunburned and it's not like a sunburn like you and I would get,
- 11:42but it's a sunburn beneath the bark tissue and it,
- 11:46that could lead to canker,
- 11:48which can lead to bark splitting and that leads to dead and dying branches,
- 11:52which when a tree goes into stress,
- 11:55it sends out a signal and that signal attracts all kinds of insects and disease and rot.
- 12:01Like I said before,
- 12:03hat racking is a death sentence to the tree.
- 12:05It's pretty much dead.
- 12:06It just doesn't know it,
- 12:07it may take 5,
- 12:0810 years for it to die,
- 12:09but it is going to die.
- 12:11And the other thing uh I talked about was improper uh proper pruning of your tree.
- 12:17One,
- 12:17another thing that uh to be careful of is not to,
- 12:20it's called lion's tail of your branching.
- 12:23That's when you remove all your small branches,
- 12:27everything on that limb up to the end of the limb,
- 12:31cleaning out the whole inside of the tree.
- 12:33Well,
- 12:34and that branch looks like a lion's tail is just all naked out to the end and looks like a bushy lion's tail that transfers all the weight from spread out in that branch to the tip of that branch,
- 12:49thereby making that branch weak.
- 12:51Even if it is strongly attached,
- 12:53it can break in the middle,
- 12:55it can break anywhere along the,
- 12:56along the way.
- 12:57And when that happens,
- 12:59it's gonna come down,
- 12:59it's gonna break.
- 13:00But then we have nowhere to trim it back to because now there's nothing that's coming out.
- 13:05That's why we leave branching in the middle.
- 13:07So if a branch does break,
- 13:09we have somewhere to trim it back to keep that branching,
- 13:12keep that tree healthy.
- 13:13You see a lot of neighborhoods which have large,
- 13:16very heavily leaved trees like oak trees and all that are those more in danger during a storm than say,
- 13:25a palm tree.
- 13:27No.
- 13:27Uh not necessarily if they're,
- 13:29if they're pruned correctly.
- 13:31No.
- 13:31Um That's,
- 13:33that's again,
- 13:34I keep stressing pruning correctly because when you say a lot of leafy,
- 13:39large canopy trees,
- 13:41sometimes those trees have been hat racked and then they branch out with a lot of leaves and um they become very leafy,
- 13:50very dense and that is like the wind hitting a wall and winds not gonna blow through there like a large tree that may have a lot of leaves on it,
- 13:58but have the area for it to blow through and allow the wind to blow through.
- 14:04So the tree when it's hat racked is now in stress and it's taking the reserve foods that it has in the roots and bringing it up to produce more leaves so that it could produce more food to put uh put the reserves back in the roots and try and bring its health back up.
- 14:20So it's,
- 14:21it stresses the tree,
- 14:22let's define it a little bit.
- 14:23You use the term hat rack.
- 14:24We've heard that a lot.
- 14:25What exactly does that mean?
- 14:28Um hat racking is the indiscriminate uh cutting of branches or into stubs or removing majority or all of the uh leaf structure.
- 14:41Um A lot which people think no,
- 14:44now that mine make sure he's safe.
- 14:46I don't have any ranches on there,
- 14:48but you end up with a little stick with something that looks like a hat hat rack.
- 14:54OK.
- 14:54So some people call it topping um or rounding off,
- 14:58but it,
- 14:58you know,
- 14:59hat racks the same.
- 14:59Unfortunately,
- 15:00you do see instances of that.
- 15:02A lot of places here in South Florida,
- 15:05that's something we should be avoiding.
- 15:07Uh that,
- 15:08that used to be the way people trimmed 3540 years ago.
- 15:12Not anymore.
- 15:13You know,
- 15:14we called it the five year pruning back then.
- 15:16Uh We,
- 15:16we didn't know any better.
- 15:18And then research came up.
- 15:19Um The Florida Urban Forestry Council started doing research,
- 15:25then uh they started doing research at I I uh and then all over and ISA came involved,
- 15:31got involved and uh did more research.
- 15:34So over the years,
- 15:36they found all these things that happened to the tree that stresses the tree out that will actually destroy the tree eventually.
- 15:43If you ha rack a tree,
- 15:45it is pretty much giving it a death penalty.
- 15:47It may take 10 years.
- 15:48The tree is pretty much dead and doesn't know it.
- 15:51Um But you know about 8384 is when I discovered the isa to urban forestry and decided uh and learned about the,
- 16:04there was an upcoming the isa the certification.
- 16:07They were uh kind of pushing it in Florida and really bringing it to our attention and that's when I got certified.
- 16:13So,
- 16:14so we can start properly pruning in West Palm Beach and doing it correctly.
- 16:19Calvin.
- 16:21We now know that we have a certain amount of days for,
- 16:25for residents to uh basically pile on and get rid of a lot of material that needs to be moved before hurricane season.
- 16:35Um Do they need to be bagging everything?
- 16:38Can they just pile it?
- 16:39What's what's the correct way of properly disposing of the material and placing it so that you guys can pick it up?
- 16:45Well,
- 16:45first of all,
- 16:46as far as bagging the leaves,
- 16:47that is great.
- 16:48Uh that they would do that.
- 16:50So therefore the items would not clog up our drains and that's very important is that.
- 16:56So therefore,
- 16:57um,
- 16:57the storm waters co flooding in your neighborhoods,
- 17:01um,
- 17:02you know,
- 17:02less stress.
- 17:03Oh,
- 17:04yeah.
- 17:04So what happens is if you have a lot of loose material on the street leaves grass,
- 17:08whatever that just washes right down into the storm drains and,
- 17:11and develop more problems.
- 17:14So one thing we do ask the residents to uh place uh the vegetation pile in front of the house,
- 17:20uh for safety reasons,
- 17:22um for safe collection from our drivers,
- 17:26we asked them not to place it near cars underneath trees,
- 17:30underneath wires.
- 17:32Um So therefore we won't have no incidents or accidents while we're moving the debris.
- 17:37Ok.
- 17:38So,
- 17:38and,
- 17:38and this will be,
- 17:40and,
- 17:40and this is important because you touched on this earlier.
- 17:42Now is the time to do this or during amnesty days,
- 17:45this is the time to be preparing and getting the stuff together because within the last 48 hours before a storm,
- 17:52you guys aren't going to be doing that.
- 17:54Absolutely.
- 17:54Once the winds reach 35 MPH,
- 17:57sanitation vehicles are all off the road.
- 18:01Ok.
- 18:01So that's really important as we've often stretched,
- 18:05stressed in our hurricane messaging to citizens being prepared is the key to survival.
- 18:10Get ahead of the storm,
- 18:12don't wait till it's here to get gas and to get food because that's too late.
- 18:16Absolutely.
- 18:17That's,
- 18:17that's,
- 18:17that makes a lot of sense.
- 18:19So,
- 18:19we've talked about bagging materials.
- 18:22We've talked about making sure that that loose materials isn't washed down into the storm drains.
- 18:27Uh,
- 18:27we've talked about,
- 18:28uh,
- 18:28properly cutting branches into length.
- 18:31Now,
- 18:31the one thing that we do want to be talking about again is that you're doing a lot of work on your lawn and trying to get it to a point where it stays healthy,
- 18:40but it is capable of surviving the stronger winds that we will see during a,
- 18:45during an actual blow.
- 18:47Um,
- 18:47we have obviously lots of people have beautiful hedges and some,
- 18:51some people are very tall hedges and stuff.
- 18:53What is there anything we can do with that or they're just gonna get beat up?
- 18:57Unfortunately,
- 18:58there's not a whole lot you can do with that if you have a very tall fighter hedge.
- 19:03Um,
- 19:03from experience,
- 19:04if you try to bring it down low,
- 19:06you're never gonna get it back up to where you had it and it's never really gonna survive that.
- 19:10Well,
- 19:11um,
- 19:12so the best you can hope for is that you,
- 19:15when you just trim it up,
- 19:16normally,
- 19:16the way you would normally do,
- 19:18just hope that you,
- 19:20it can be salvaged.
- 19:21Uh There really isn't a,
- 19:23uh,
- 19:24set formula on what to do for something like that.
- 19:27Is there a type of tree which is best suited for strong winds or is there ones that we might have in our yard,
- 19:35a mango tree perhaps that we really do need to worry about.
- 19:39Um,
- 19:40I wouldn't say no,
- 19:41not really.
- 19:42I mean,
- 19:43there,
- 19:43there's,
- 19:44um,
- 19:44there are trees that do stand up to storms a little bit better than others,
- 19:49but a good healthy tree is your best bet.
- 19:53You know.
- 19:53Uh,
- 19:53you know,
- 19:54people have trees in their yards and they don't fertilize them,
- 19:56they don't take care of them,
- 19:57they don't trim,
- 19:58they don't have them trim properly.
- 20:00And,
- 20:01you know,
- 20:02if they have a weaker root system,
- 20:04uh sometimes it's not the,
- 20:06it's not the tree and how it's pruned.
- 20:08It's the,
- 20:09the root system.
- 20:10If the root system is weak because of damage or um lack of uh fertilization or lack of food or whatever the case may be,
- 20:20uh It could tend to blow over anyway.
- 20:22Uh weak soil.
- 20:23Um If the soil is very uh loose and sandy and we get a torrential rain,
- 20:30it's,
- 20:31it's not always the winds that actually push a tree over when you get the winds in combination with heavy rains and the soil becomes so damp that the roots can't hold on anymore because there's more water in the soil than there is soil.
- 20:45Your tree could come over because of that.
- 20:48You know,
- 20:48that could happen to a hedge,
- 20:49to a tree to just about anything.
- 20:52So the rains and the moisture really are um more of a detriment to uh to us during a storm than,
- 21:02than even the winds.
- 21:04I've,
- 21:04I've seen every hurricane and tropical storm and everything since 7,
- 21:071979.
- 21:09And I think the worst damage I've,
- 21:11I've seen was during a tropical storm.
- 21:13Even some of the worst hurricanes we have,
- 21:15we didn't get as much damage as a tropical storm because the rains that we had and we had some trees come over,
- 21:22we had some very large,
- 21:24uh fights and Banyan trees in Dr Park.
- 21:26Dreer Park come over and fortunately we were able to stand them and they're still doing fine.
- 21:33You know,
- 21:33and that,
- 21:33that brings up a good point.
- 21:34You know,
- 21:35a lot of people go,
- 21:36oh,
- 21:36well,
- 21:37if it's not a major hurricane,
- 21:38if it's not a category four,
- 21:39category I fine.
- 21:41No big deal.
- 21:42What you're saying is that the sort of a hidden danger is in the sheer amount of water that might come down and saturate the ground and weaken the root system of the trees.
- 21:51Correct.
- 21:52Yes,
- 21:54that's,
- 21:54that's new.
- 21:56That's important.
- 21:57Um You know,
- 21:58so we,
- 21:58what we've covered a lot of different items here as far as how uh we can take advantage of this program.
- 22:05Um What other things,
- 22:07Calvin do?
- 22:08We need to tell folks about being prepared or getting or taking the best advantage of the amnesty weeks that are coming up?
- 22:14Just uh just want to let everybody know and residents here at the city of West Palm Beach,
- 22:19please take advantage of this opportunity.
- 22:21Um Anytime after amnesty week,
- 22:24um there is a charge for large piles that exceed uh four by four by 18.
- 22:30So I it's a great opportunity during Amnesty week,
- 22:34which is May 6th to May 17th.
- 22:37If you need more information,
- 22:38you can reach us at our website W pb.org/public works or you can email us at public works at W pb.org or contact,
- 22:48contact us at 561822,
- 22:522075.
- 22:53I could not say it better myself,
- 22:54Callan.
- 22:55Thank you,
- 22:55Greg.
- 22:56We covered a lot of ground about trees and you have been here since the late seventies.
- 23:01You've seen it all.
- 23:02What one bit of advice would you want to give to residents of West Palm Beach in preparation of getting their lawns and landscaping ready for possible tropical storm?
- 23:14Well,
- 23:14as far as getting lawns and landscaping,
- 23:16just do your normal maintenance.
- 23:18Um,
- 23:19you don't need to over trim anything or over prune anything because you,
- 23:24well,
- 23:24for one,
- 23:25it'll just overburden the sanitation department with needless uh,
- 23:28debris that uh doesn't really be,
- 23:31need to be picked up and two,
- 23:33it'll take longer for your,
- 23:34uh,
- 23:35hedges and shrubs and everything to recuperate.
- 23:38Um,
- 23:39once everything is done because the landscaping itself,
- 23:44normally there's not a whole lot of damage to that.
- 23:47It's usually things blowing around.
- 23:50Um,
- 23:52people leaving things laying on their lawn,
- 23:54they forget to bring their chairs in,
- 23:55they forget to bring in a small pot,
- 23:57they forget to bring in something like that.
- 24:00I,
- 24:00I don't think there's probably more damage than this,
- 24:03uh,
- 24:04with that than there is even from tree branches coming down.
- 24:07Yes.
- 24:07Have I seen that?
- 24:08Yes,
- 24:09I've seen tree branches come down.
- 24:11I've seen trees come over.
- 24:13Um,
- 24:13I've seen trees,
- 24:14you know.
- 24:15Yes,
- 24:15up against the house.
- 24:17Uh,
- 24:17which I,
- 24:17I hate to say,
- 24:18I hate to see it but those things do happen once in a while.
- 24:23But in overall,
- 24:24uh like I said,
- 24:25I've been here since 74 my first hurricane was in 79 and the amount of times that that has actually happened has been very,
- 24:34very minimal and,
- 24:36and I feel that West Palm has been blessed with um the way the storms have come into us and everything and I think we just have a and,
- 24:46and I've got to say it because I am really proud of this city.
- 24:49We have a very,
- 24:50very strong um recovery system in place for recuperating after a storm and cleaning the streets and getting our major roads open for police and fire and emergency vehicles and things like that.
- 25:05And I am very proud of what we do.
- 25:07That's fantastic.
- 25:08And finally Calvin just to touch base again,
- 25:11if people want to learn more about how about amnesty weeks and what they need to do to be prepared.
