Latest / Old Ways New Days / Season 2, Episode 1: "Welcome Back"
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Well, hello, hello, hello, is this thing still on?
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It is! It's on! We checked it twice this time! Good! Because the last time we started recording and found out 40 minutes in that we'd been talking to absolutely nobody.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: That was a dark week for this podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: It really was.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: But we're back! Season two baby! Welcome back to Always New Days, the show for anyone trying to grow something, tend something, or bless something in a space smaller than a postage stamp.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Backyards, balconies, windowsills, that one weird corner of your kitchen.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: We don't care how small it is, we care that you're doing it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: And doing it with a little bit of old magic mixed in.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Because self-sufficiency isn't just a spreadsheet and a compost bin, it's also candles and timing things by the moon and yelling at your basil in a language it probably doesn't understand.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: It understands tone.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Basil's very sensitive to tone.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Anyway, we took a little break.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: We missed you, and we are so glad to be back in your ears.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Welcome, witches, pagans, heathens, spiritualists, and anyone interested in living sustainably.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: This is Old Ways, New Days, where the old ways meet the good dirt.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: I'm Kayla.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: And I'm Noel.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: And each week we explore the sacred art of living close to the land.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: From compost to covens, chickens to charms, we're reclaiming self-sufficiency, seasonal living, and ancestral wisdom.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Whether you're stirring your cauldron or your soup pot, this is a space for wild-hearted folk walking the homesteading path with intention, magic, and muddy boots.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: How's it going, Kayla?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Good, good.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Nice little break.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So we were gone for just a little bit over a month.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Um and fall or autumn came really quick.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: It did.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: And well, this is our fake fall.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Our fake fall?
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Because you know we're gonna heat up again.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Even though I've already had leaves falling and turning color in my yard since last month.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Uh I've just now noticed.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, most of my flowers that normally start to are just starting to bloom I have not or already did and are spent.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm not having that last autumn color.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: I know, it's very disappointing.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And I found out my strawberries that I have are fall strawberries too.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Ooh, like an ever bearing kind of all season.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Nice, nice, very nice.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I have noticed my my fiance had commented a couple weeks ago uh that there was an animal on top of our porch roof, because we just have uh clear plastic sheeting for the porch roof.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And he came in and he's like, look in the upstairs window and see if you can see what it is, because he thought it was a possum.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Because we've had possums in the yard and they scare him every time.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Aww.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And so But they're harmless, they are harmless, they just hiss at you.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: But we couldn't see from the upstairs window what it was, and so he went back out to finish smoking and playing his game, and then he comes running back in, locking the door, he goes, Nope, nope, nope, it was two baby raccoons, I'm done.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: What a chicken, I know, but ever since I keep finding tomatoes half eaten.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: So I'm assuming it's the raccoons.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but they need to eat.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: They do need to eat, and I have more tomatoes than I can deal with.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: So yeah, welcome back, listeners.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: We have been gone for quite a while.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Um, so let's do a little touch-in and see where we are.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: I did notice that, especially on our YouTube, the last, the third installment of the Seeds for Tomorrow app series has over uh almost 200 views.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Oh wow! So that was very exciting! Yay! And apparently our system locked us out.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Well, we've been gone for a while.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Wow! I know I can't I can't type on the computer with a kitty in my lap.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Bear with me, listeners.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Maybe Nell can s talk about what she was doing.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: What I was doing.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Besides my pool tournaments and um still packing up and moving stuff from the apartment to the house and fixing up the house, you know, that was pretty much it.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Because I have one more month to get everything out of the apartment.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Hey Kitty, stop eating the plastic.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: But mom, it's so good.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So even though we were gone for a while in the uh we still have had people listening, which is awesome.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: We appreciate all of you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Uh currently we're in four countries or territories um for the last uh 30 days of viewing.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: United States, Japan, Romania, and Egypt um were the top four or the only four.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So that's fine.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Uh I understand, you know, we take a break and people kind of you know they they forget, which is which is okay.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: It happens, it happens.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: So, but we are back.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: We're back, baby.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: So let's talk about where we left off because it's been a minute.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Season one was a lot of how do I even start energy?
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: We were setting up raised beds, figuring out container soil, arguing about whether you actually need a full altar to do a harvest blessing.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Well, you don't.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: We agreed on that eventually, yes.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: A windowsill and some intention will do just fine.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: We talked about container gardening basics.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: We did the whole what can you what can actually survive on an apartment balcony?
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Rundown.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: We talked container gardening basics.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: We did the whole what can actually survive on an apartment balcony rundown.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: We got into simple seasonal rituals that don't require a coven, a cauldron, or explaining yourself to your roommates.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Which honestly, people just want to do something small and meaningful without turning their apartment into a renaissance fair.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Completely reasonable request.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: So here's the thing: we're not reinventing anything this season, no big format change, no mystery guest drops, but we do have an interviewee lined up and we're just having difficulties aligning our schedules.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: But we're hoping to go deeper into the stuff that worked because season one was foundation.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: This season is okay, you've got the basics.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Now let's actually live this way, season after season, year after year.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: More practical skills, more seasonal tie-ins, still very much the same vibe.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Half homesteading podcast, half here's a small ritual that takes four minutes and doesn't require you to own a robe.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: No robes.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: That's basically our whole brand.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: So expect the same rhythm you're used to.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Seasonal check-ins, practical small space projects, some folklore and tradition woven in, listener questions when we get them, and us occasionally disagreeing about whether talking to your plants actually does anything.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: It does something.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: I stand by that.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: We'll agree to disagree publicly forever as a bit.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Well I talk to my plants.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: So let's actually ground this in the moment, because that's kind of the whole point of the show.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Old ways.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: But paying attention to what's actually happening outside your window right now.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: So depending on when you're listening to this, we're either coming out of winter dormancy or heading into it.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: And either way, this is a good moment for a rest.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: For a reset.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Not a buy 16 new tools reset, a look at what you can actually have and what you actually need reset.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Which, small space or not, is honestly the most useful habit in all of this.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: People think homesteading is about acquiring stuff.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: It's mostly about paying attention.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Paying attention to your light, paying attention to your soil, paying attention to what time of year it actually is versus what the store's telling you to buy.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: The store will sell you tomato starts in March regardless of your climate.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: The store does not care about your climate.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: The store does not care about you at all is the lesson there.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: So take stock.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: What survived from last season?
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: What didn't?
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: What do you actually want to grow or make or tend this time around?
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Versus what you felt like you were supposed to do because it looked nice online.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: That's a good one to sit with.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Old ways were never about looking nice online.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: They were about what worked in your specific spot with your specific conditions.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Which, small correction, is also good gardening advice with the pagan part stripped out entirely.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Funny how that works.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: It's almost like the traditions were paying attention to something real.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Almost like that.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Almost.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: So let's actually give people something to do, since we've been just been talking at them for ten minutes.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Oops.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, small practice.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Just takes five minutes, no equipment beyond what you probably already have.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Go to whatever growing space you've got.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Pot, bed, balcony rail, windowsill, doesn't matter, and just look at it.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Actually look.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Don't scroll past it on your way to check your phone.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Notice what's still alive from before.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Notice what's bare.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Notice the light, where it hits, where it doesn't, how that's maybe shifted since you last really paid attention.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: And if you want to add the little ritual piece, light a candle.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Say something out loud.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Even just okay, let's go again.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: That's the whole thing.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: That's the practice.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: It doesn't need to be elaborate to count.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Intention is doing the actual work here, not the props.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Though the props are fun.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: The props are fun.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: We're not antiprop.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: No, we're prop prop.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Pro prop.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Propr.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Just not required prop.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: So over the next few episodes, we're going to get back into the practical stuff.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Proper seasonal planning for small spaces, some deeper folklore around what we're growing and why, and we'll keep doing our best to answer whatever you send us.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Speaking of, if you've got a question, a small space success story, a small space disaster story, we generally want both.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Send it in.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: We read everything.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: So that's season two underway.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Same show, same nonsense.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Woohoo! Hopefully a little more useful than last time.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: We'll take that bar and clear it easily.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: We will.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Thanks for sticking with us through the break, and thanks for being back here with us now.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: This has been Old Ways New Days.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: I'm Nell and I'm Kayla.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: And we'll catch you next time.
