- 0:10a look at a conversation that I think fundamentally challenges
- 0:13the way most of us think about aging.
- 0:15Yeah, it really does. We're breaking down Joe Rogan's
- 0:18discussion with a doctor, Tommy Wood.
- 0:20And Doctor Wood is he's a fascinating guy.
- 0:22He's a neuroscientist, but his client list is, well, it's
- 0:27pretty out there. It's.
- 0:28Bizarrely diverse, right? On one hand, he's working with
- 0:32some of the most vulnerable people imaginable.
- 0:34Premature infants who had brain injuries.
- 0:36The elderly who are facing cognitive decline.
- 0:39And then on the other hand. He consults for Formula One
- 0:42drivers. I mean these are basically
- 0:43cognitive super athletes. It seems like a total
- 0:45contradiction, but that's kind of his whole point.
- 0:48Wood argues that the Physiology connecting that premature baby,
- 0:51an 80 year old with dementia and an F1 driver going 200 miles an
- 0:55hour, it's all remarkably similar.
- 0:58So the inputs you need to build a brain or maintain it, or even
- 1:01repair it, they don't really change.
- 1:03Not fundamentally, no. The context is different, but
- 1:06the biology's the same. The central theme here, the
- 1:10mission of this deep dive, is this idea of future proofing
- 1:13your brain. And the big question they really
- 1:15dig into is whether cognitive decline, you know, getting
- 1:19slower, foggier or even developing dementia.
- 1:23Is that inevitable? That is the trillion dollar
- 1:26question, isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:27I mean, the story we alltel ourselves is that dementia is
- 1:29this random, terrifying lightning strike.
- 1:33You get old, your brain wears out, and that's that.
- 1:35Just bad luck. Exactly.
- 1:37But Wood's new book, it's called The Stimulated Mind, argues
- 1:41that, well, genetics definitely play a role, but we have so much
- 1:44more agency than we think. So let's get right into the
- 1:46numbers, because they are, they're staggering, he says.
- 1:49A massive chunk of dementia cases are preventable.
- 1:52He cites The Lancet Commission, which is a huge deal in the
- 1:55medical world. They suggest about 45% of
- 1:57dementia cases are preventable just based on modifiable risk
- 2:00factors. Things we can actually change,
- 2:02right? But Wood thinks even that is a
- 2:04conservative number. He pushes it closer to like 70%.
- 2:0870%, that's a huge claim. I mean, if that's true, it
- 2:12implies that the majority of people suffering today are in
- 2:15that position because of lifestyle and environment.
- 2:18To a large degree, yes, he breaks dementia down.
- 2:21It's not just, you know, forgetting your keys.
- 2:24To get a clinical diagnosis, you have to have lost so much
- 2:28cognitive function that you can't care for yourself anymore.
- 2:30And most of that is Alzheimer's. Right, about 60 to 80%.
- 2:34Then you have vascular dementia, which is basically a plumbing
- 2:37problem. Not enough blood flow getting to
- 2:39the brain. But OK, we have to talk about
- 2:40the genetics, the elephant in the room, the APOE 4 gene.
- 2:46Of course. Because I know people who've
- 2:48done those 23 andme tests, they find out they have a copy of
- 2:51this gene and they basically just think, well, game over For
- 2:54me, it's. Such a common reaction, but it's
- 2:56a total misunderstanding of how that gene works.
- 2:59Wood explains that APOE 4 is not a dementia gene.
- 3:03It doesn't just give you the disease.
- 3:04So what does it do? It's an inflammatory amplifier.
- 3:06It just turns up the volume on inflammation.
- 3:09Exactly. Think of it like a risk
- 3:11multiplier. Yeah.
- 3:12So if you have one copy, your risk of Alzheimer's might be two
- 3:16to six times higher, 2 copies it could be up to 20 times higher.
- 3:20But, and this is the part everyone misses, it multiplies
- 3:24the signal from your environment.
- 3:25Meaning if your environment and lifestyle are bad, the gene
- 3:29makes it so much worse. So much worse, but the opposite
- 3:32is also true. This is the key insight.
- 3:35Because the gene makes your system more sensitive, people
- 3:38with APOE 4 can actually respond better to positive lifestyle
- 3:42changes, no? Way so if you have the gene and
- 3:44you exercise and eat well. You get a bigger protective
- 3:47benefit than someone without the gene.
- 3:49So it's not a death sentence, it's more like a high stakes
- 3:52game. You have less room for error,
- 3:54but you get a much higher return on your investment if you do the
- 3:57right things. That is the perfect way to put
- 3:59it. It's a sensitivity setting, not
- 4:01a destiny setting. OK, so let's get into the
- 4:03mechanism. How do we actually keep the
- 4:05brain healthy? Wood talks about use it or lose
- 4:08it, which, you know, sounds like a cliche.
- 4:10It does, but he breaks it down into something he calls the
- 4:13stimulus paradox. And this is fascinating, right?
- 4:17Because we all feel like our lives are incredibly
- 4:19stimulating. We're just bombarded all day
- 4:21social media news notifications. We feel mentally drained by the
- 4:25end of the day, but Wood's argument is that we are
- 4:28simultaneously hyperstimulated and under stimulated.
- 4:32Explain that how can you be? Both.
- 4:34Well, the hyperstimulation is all passive input.
- 4:36Just scrolling, listening, watching.
- 4:38It's like being a traffic cop for information.
- 4:40It's tiring, but it's not building anything.
- 4:43So what's the other side? The under stimulation.
- 4:45That's the lack of active calculation of problem solving.
- 4:49True stimulus, the kind that builds and maintains neural
- 4:52tissue, requires you to actually formulate an idea, test it, and
- 4:56then refine it. And he brought up a study from
- 4:58MIT about AI that illustrates this perfectly.
- 5:02And I think this is going to hurt some feelings.
- 5:03Oh, the essay writing one. Yeah, the essay writing one,
- 5:05they had students write essays. One group did it the old
- 5:08fashioned way. The other group used things like
- 5:10ChatGPT to do the heavy lifting. And the results were pretty
- 5:14stark. The students who use the AI?
- 5:17Their brains showed way less activation in the areas for
- 5:21critical thinking. Because the AI did all the
- 5:22thinking for them the formulating.
- 5:24Exactly. And as a result, those students
- 5:27retained less of the information.
- 5:29The brain is an efficiency machine.
- 5:31If you outsource the hard work, the brain just says great, I
- 5:35don't need these circuits and it lets them weaken.
- 5:37But he's not saying, you know, smash a computer.
- 5:39He has a solution. He calls it the orthotic
- 5:42approach. Right, like a crutch or a back
- 5:44brace. You use it for support, but if
- 5:46you rely on it all the time, your own muscles waste away.
- 5:49His advice is you have to do the hard thinking first.
- 5:53Write the rough draft yourself. Solve the problem yourself, then
- 5:56use the AI to check your work. Find your blind spots.
- 5:59Use it to extend your ability and not replace the effort.
- 6:02Precisely because the effort is the medicine.
- 6:06And this flows right into neuroplasticity.
- 6:07We hear that word all the time, But Wood has a pretty aggressive
- 6:10take on what actually triggers it.
- 6:12He basically says if you aren't sucking at something, you're not
- 6:15changing your brain. He's talking about the raw
- 6:17biochemistry of learning. Neuroplasticity is a response to
- 6:21error. When you try to do something
- 6:23new, play an instrument, speak a language, and you get it wrong,
- 6:27you feel frustrated. I know that feeling.
- 6:29We all do. And that frustration is actually
- 6:31a chemical signal. It's noradrenaline and
- 6:34acetylcholine flooding your brain, telling it, hey, there's
- 6:38a gap here between what we expected to happen and what
- 6:42actually happened. And that gap, that's the
- 6:44trigger. The gap is everything.
- 6:45That chemical signal literally tags the specific synapses that
- 6:50need to be remodeled. If you only do things you're
- 6:53already good at, there's no gap. No gap, no signal, no growth, no
- 6:56growth. So when you're trying to learn
- 6:58guitar and you're getting angry because your fingers won't
- 7:00cooperate, that feeling of anger is literally the sensation of
- 7:04your brain releasing the chemicals required for learning.
- 7:07And we all interpret that feeling as I'm bad at this, I
- 7:10should quit. When really it's the proof that
- 7:12you need to keep going. That's the sweet spot.
- 7:14That's where the future proofing is happening.
- 7:16He used a great analogy for this called headroom.
- 7:19This really helped me visualize it.
- 7:20The leg strength analogy, yeah, it's brilliant, he says.
- 7:23You know, to get off the toilet you need a certain baseline
- 7:26amount of quad strength. Just for daily life, right?
- 7:30But if that's all, you have just exactly enough strength.
- 7:33You're functional, but you're incredibly fragile.
- 7:37Because if you get sick, if you get the flu and lose 10% of your
- 7:41strength. You're stuck.
- 7:42You literally can't get off the toilet.
- 7:44But if you train your legs to squat, say £300, you have this
- 7:49massive reserve, you have headroom.
- 7:51You can get sick, you can have a bad week, you can get older, and
- 7:54you still have more than enough strength to function.
- 7:57And the brain is exactly the same.
- 7:58This is the whole cognitive reserve idea.
- 8:01If you spend your life building this dense neural network by
- 8:04doing hard things, then later in life if you get some amyloid
- 8:07plaque or go through a period of intense stress, you have so much
- 8:11redundant capacity that you can keep functioning normally.
- 8:15So the goal isn't just to be smart enough for today's
- 8:17problems, it's to build a buffer for the hits that are definitely
- 8:21coming later. You are banking cognitive
- 8:23function for a rainy day. OK, let's shift gears to the F1
- 8:27drivers. This is where it gets really
- 8:28practical. These guys are interesting
- 8:30because their problem isn't a lack of stimulus.
- 8:34Not at all. Driving an F1 car is about as
- 8:35stimulating as it gets. Their whole problem is recovery.
- 8:39And specifically, travel constant jet lag.
- 8:42Wood laid out a protocol for this that was so specific.
- 8:45It's not just go get some sunlight.
- 8:47No, it's way more nuanced. It's based on the idea that you
- 8:50don't just have one biological clock in your brain, you have
- 8:53peripheral clocks in your organs.
- 8:55Especially the liver. This is the part I'd never
- 8:57heard. The liver has its own clock.
- 8:59It does, and it's set by food. Your main clock in your brain is
- 9:02set by light, so jet lag is basically when your brain and
- 9:05your liver are in a huge argument about what time it is.
- 9:08So your eyes see the sun in Tokyo and say it's morning, but
- 9:11your liver is still on London time.
- 9:13Exactly. And your liver clock is dragging
- 9:15you back. So the fix, according to Wood,
- 9:18is fasting. On the plane.
- 9:19He is adamant about this. Do not eat on the plane.
- 9:23You fast during the flight which basically put your liver clock
- 9:27on pause. Then when you land, you eat a
- 9:30normal meal at a normal meal time in the new time zone.
- 9:33And that meal resets the liver clock to match the brain clock
- 9:37it. Snaps them into alignment, but
- 9:39that's only Part 1. Right, because when you land,
- 9:41most people just want to crash. Take a nap.
- 9:44But he sends his driver straight to the gym.
- 9:45Even if they're totally exhausted.
- 9:47Especially then he wants a high intensity workout to send a
- 9:51massive signal to the body that the day has now begun.
- 9:55It forces the whole circadian rhythm to get with the program.
- 9:58Speaking of getting pumped up, they talked about the Yerkes
- 10:01Dodson law. Sounds complicated.
- 10:03It's just a bell curve. Imagine the bottom axis is
- 10:06arousal, how stressed or amped up you are.
- 10:08The vertical axis is your performance at low arousal.
- 10:11You're lethargic. Performance is bad.
- 10:14As arousal goes up, you get focused.
- 10:16You hit that flow state at the top of the curve.
- 10:18But if you go past the peak. You fall off a Cliff, you get
- 10:21too aroused, you're anxious, scattered, jittery.
- 10:25Performance plummets and F1 drivers have to live right at
- 10:28the very peak of that curve for two hours straight.
- 10:32And this brought up a really interesting point about cold
- 10:34plunges. Everyone's doing ice baths right
- 10:37now to get sharp for the day. Right.
- 10:38But Wood says be careful. A cold plunge is a massive
- 10:42arousal spike. But if you go too hard, like 3
- 10:45minutes in freezing water, you can actually push yourself right
- 10:48over the top of that curve. Your brain just goes into
- 10:50survival. Mode exactly.
- 10:52So you might feel awake, but your cognitive function, your
- 10:55working memory can actually take a hit.
- 10:58For pure mental prep, he says a 20 minute jog is way better.
- 11:01It warms you up, increases blood flow without the panic signal.
- 11:05That is a relief. I would much rather go for a
- 11:07jog. Me too.
- 11:09So Wood ties a lot of this together in what he calls the 3S
- 11:11model stimulus, supply and support.
- 11:14We've talked a lot about stimulus.
- 11:15Let's touch on supply. Supply is just the logistics,
- 11:19the plumbing. Your brain needs blood flow and
- 11:22nutrients to work. This is why things like high
- 11:25blood pressure and high blood sugar are so devastating for
- 11:28brain health. They damage the tiny blood
- 11:29vessels. They cut off the fuel lines to
- 11:31your neurons. So exercise isn't just for your
- 11:34heart, it's literally keeping your brain fed.
- 11:36And then the third S is support, which is mostly sleep and stress
- 11:41management. And this is where that killer
- 11:43mindset idea gets really interesting.
- 11:45Yeah, I loved this part. We have this image of an elite
- 11:49performer like a Michael Jordan who is just ruthless with
- 11:52himself. The Mamba mentality, never
- 11:55satisfied, beats himself up over every tiny mistake.
- 11:58But Wood argues that the people with the most longevity, the
- 12:01absolute best of the best, are actually incredibly self
- 12:04compassionate. He used that statistic about
- 12:06Roger Federer. I mean it's just mind blowing.
- 12:08It is. Federer may be the greatest
- 12:11tennis player ever, only 154% of the total points he played in
- 12:14his entire career. That's wild.
- 12:16It means he was failing 46% of the time.
- 12:18He was losing almost every other point.
- 12:20Exactly. So if he had that mindset where
- 12:22he punished himself for every single error, he would have
- 12:25burned out completely. He had to have this ability to
- 12:28just delete the mistake and move on instantly.
- 12:31Like those pool players, he mentioned the difference between
- 12:34the Americans and the Taiwanese players.
- 12:36Yeah, the American players would miss a shot and you could see
- 12:38them spiral, slump, shoulders, getting angry.
- 12:41The Taiwanese players were trained to show 0 emotion.
- 12:45Miss a shot. Sit down, wait for your next
- 12:47turn. Because the emotional reaction
- 12:49is a huge waste of energy. It pushes you way too high on
- 12:52that arousal. Curve.
- 12:52It's just inefficient. Yeah, self compassion isn't
- 12:55soft. It's a high performance
- 12:56strategy. You can't afford the hormonal
- 12:58cost of beating yourself up. So as we wrap this up, there was
- 13:00one final piece of data they brought up that gives a lot of
- 13:03hope, the Seattle Longitudinal Study.
- 13:06A crucial study. They followed people from their
- 13:0820s all the way into their hundreds.
- 13:11And the big finding is that cognitive decline is not this
- 13:15inevitable downward slope. It's not a given.
- 13:17So what's the difference? What separates the people who
- 13:19stay sharp from those who don't? The decline almost always,
- 13:24always correlates with a reduction in demand.
- 13:28It kicks in when people retire, when they stop solving hard
- 13:31problems, when they stop socializing as much.
- 13:33When they stop trying new things that they might suck at.
- 13:36When the gap between expectation and reality just disappears from
- 13:42their lives. Which brings us to the most
- 13:43provocative thought from this whole conversation.
- 13:46We spend our entire lives aiming for retirement.
- 13:49The dream is to finally stop working, sit on a beach and do
- 13:53nothing. The life of leisure.
- 13:55But if we look at this research, is that dream actually a
- 13:58cognitive nightmare? It really looks that way.
- 14:01If the brain is a muscle that follows the use it or lose it
- 14:03principle, then retirement is basically the equivalent of
- 14:06putting your brain on permanent bed rest.
- 14:09We have to completely rethink what our later years are for.
- 14:12We shouldn't be aiming for leisure.
- 14:13We. Should be aiming for a new
- 14:14challenge. We should.
- 14:15Be aiming to be bad at something again, to feel that frustration.
- 14:19Because that frustration is the fountain of youth.
- 14:22So the big take away for you today, the comfort zone is the
- 14:25danger zone. Go learn something that makes
- 14:27you feel a little bit stupid. Your future self will thank you
