- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:08Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:18Today is officially at my one year of no alcohol.
- 0:24So that is what's going on with me today.
- 0:26I think I might do a post on my social media to talk about like
- 0:29what that experience has been like for me, what I've learned,
- 0:33you know, all of that. I see that kind of content a lot
- 0:36and I really like watching it. So I might do something like
- 0:38that in the next couple of weeks.
- 0:40But yes, one year alcohol free. And I know you guys have been on
- 0:44this journey with me because when I decided to stop drinking
- 0:47alcohol last year, I talked about it on the podcast with
- 0:50Jordy. And I also like in that decision
- 0:53inspired her to go sober for a few months here and there over
- 0:56the past year. And I actually have quite a few
- 0:58friends who have done sober stints here and there as well,
- 1:01kind of not because I did it, but you know, like having a
- 1:05friend and watching a friend, I think can navigate life and
- 1:08social situations and big celebration events and things
- 1:12like that. Sober, I think kind of just
- 1:14encourages you to realize that you can do it too.
- 1:17I definitely have those people in my life where I was like, you
- 1:19know, what if they're still like living their life and having the
- 1:22best time and they're not doing it with alcohol, Like I can do
- 1:25that too. So I woke up this morning and I
- 1:28was driving to work listening to Charli XCX's BRAT obviously
- 1:31extended version because I needed like 365 and all of those
- 1:36songs. And I was like, this is just so
- 1:38funny that I'm listening to literally like the party anthem
- 1:42album on my one year sober. Just like driving to work,
- 1:45having the best time. Anyways, let's just get into the
- 1:50stories for today. I just wanted to share that with
- 1:51you guys 'cause I'm obviously proud of it.
- 1:53It feels like a year has gone by so fast.
- 1:55I actually can't believe it. And you know, the universe
- 1:58wanted me to be alcohol free for these last six months of that is
- 2:02for sure. And thankfully I was OK.
- 2:07So the 1st way that I wanted to talk about, I wanted to talk
- 2:10about all the discourse about Kylie Jenner breaking down over
- 2:14the hurtful comments about her face.
- 2:16I know that this happened like last week.
- 2:19I think it was the most recent episode of the Kardashians and
- 2:21it aired a few days ago, but the discourse online has not
- 2:25stopped. So I wanted to share, I guess,
- 2:29my opinion on this, my two cents on this and talk about like
- 2:32what's happening On the latest episode of The Kardashians,
- 2:35Kylie opened up to Kendall about how hard it is to deal with
- 2:37comments about her face. As we might remember, earlier
- 2:41this year, Kylie faced a huge amount of criticism when she
- 2:44wore very little makeup to Paris.
- 2:47I think it was Paris like au couture Fashion Week and people
- 2:50said she looked super old. They said that it looks like she
- 2:54had filler migrating in her cheeks and around her face.
- 2:57They basically just set her cheeks under her eyes and stuff
- 3:00looked really like lumpy. And they were chalking that up
- 3:02to getting too much work done too early.
- 3:06So she said to Kendall, quote, it's like a miracle that I still
- 3:08have confidence and I can look in the mirror and think that I'm
- 3:11pretty. I'm wearing too much makeup and
- 3:13it's like you're wearing too much makeup.
- 3:14Then I go and I don't wear a lot of makeup and someone catches me
- 3:17in a weird light. And then Kendall said we're
- 3:20dehumanized. They don't think that there's
- 3:22any rules with us. Whereas like if you talk to that
- 3:24same way that you do about us, about other women, people would
- 3:28come to their defense all day long.
- 3:30But for some reason with us, it's like they don't think we
- 3:32have any feelings. OK, so I think there's a few
- 3:34things going on here. The Kardashians and just women
- 3:38in the spotlight in general are absolutely picked apart,
- 3:42ridiculed judge for their appearance.
- 3:44And I just, I could not imagine what that would feel like to be
- 3:49at that level, at that scale. And I agree with Kendall when
- 3:52she says we're dehumanized. Like they are dehumanized and
- 3:56people feel like they are. The Kardashian women are fair
- 3:59game to talk anything and everything about, but they are
- 4:04dehumanized because they have to remain almost like otherworldly
- 4:08to maintain their brand. Their personal brands, like the
- 4:12brand that they sell to us as consumers is being otherworldly
- 4:17hot, you know, being super rich, having this crazy luxurious
- 4:22aesthetic, this lifestyle, That's what they're selling
- 4:25their consumers. So if they don't maintain that
- 4:29kind of dehumanized element to them, then they risk us not
- 4:36purchasing their products. Like their billion dollar empire
- 4:38is quite literally built on the fact that they are living a
- 4:42lifestyle which includes how they look that 99.9% of the
- 4:46world could never achieve. But they're selling us services
- 4:50and products and businesses that tell us that if we just do these
- 4:56things, if we just buy Skims, if we just buy Kylie makeup, if we
- 4:59just buy Lemmy gummies, if we just buy Good American, if we
- 5:02just watch their show, if we just read Kris Jenner's book,
- 5:07then we too could be like them. We too could be otherworldly.
- 5:12However, I think with the Kardashians, what's frustrating
- 5:15for us as just fans, viewers, consumers, whether you love them
- 5:19or you hate them, they will never fully, I think, understand
- 5:23that. I think they won't acknowledge
- 5:25it because they don't fully understand it.
- 5:27I don't think that they realize how damaging they have been to
- 5:34the beauty standard, to the zeitgeist in general.
- 5:37It's not like as a family, they're sitting down and saying
- 5:39like, OK, what insecurity can we give little girls today?
- 5:45And then we can sell them a product to tell them that this
- 5:47will get rid of that insecurity. Like they're not doing that.
- 5:51So I think that's why it's it's all so much more like
- 5:53subversive. So I think that's why they will
- 5:56never be fully conscious of the impact that they have.
- 6:00But that being said, I do think that there is also this kind of
- 6:04false narrative that I've seen a lot, especially around this
- 6:08particular clip, that the Kardashians seemed to like
- 6:12invent unrealistic beauty standards.
- 6:14And that's just simply untrue. I talked about this in one of my
- 6:18very first deep dives of the year about like the Gen.
- 6:20Z looking old discourse. And I talked about how
- 6:23unrealistic beauty standards existed in magazines, media,
- 6:27tabloid culture for decades before the Kardashians came on
- 6:31the scene. But I think because the
- 6:33Kardashians came on the scene at the same time as social media
- 6:37started to explode, obviously the impact that anyone who is
- 6:42pushing an unrealistic beauty standard has now is so much
- 6:45greater than before social media.
- 6:47And therefore, I think there's a lot of like miss, not
- 6:51miscommunication, not and not necessarily like misinformation
- 6:54or disinformation, but just like a misunderstanding, I suppose,
- 6:57about what life was like or culture was like before social
- 7:01media and before the Kardashians.
- 7:03Because one of the anecdotes that I have shared on this
- 7:06podcast, I think more than once, is that when I was like 9/10/11,
- 7:10I mean, I've always been so into media, celebrities, beauty, all
- 7:14of that. I would buy like every tween
- 7:17magazine. I would buy People magazine,
- 7:19like everything. And you know, when I was like 10
- 7:22and 11 was when Angelina Jolie. Her face was like the blueprint.
- 7:26It was like the beauty standard. Her face is quite literally
- 7:29perfect. That is the face that the
- 7:31Kardashians are trying to achieve, right?
- 7:33Like that is the face that was the face that was like really
- 7:37pedestaled and pushed to us. So when I was like 10 and 11, I
- 7:41wanted to get lip filler. This was before Kylie Jenner was
- 7:46maybe even born. I mean, she's probably like 5.
- 7:49I'm 32 now. So this was well before she had
- 7:51lip filler. There's like this weird
- 7:53narrative that Kylie Jenner invented lip filler that the
- 7:57Kardashians invented on realistic beauty standards.
- 7:59And this is not me discrediting or discounting the harm that
- 8:03they have done. But I think it is also just the
- 8:08the discourse around this particular clip, like this scene
- 8:11from the Kardashians has been like, well, Kylie did this to
- 8:14herself. You know, she was doing lip
- 8:16fillers and lying about it. And all the little girls now
- 8:19want lip fillers. I wanted lip fillers when I was
- 8:2111 because of what tabloid culture was telling me, because
- 8:24of what magazines were telling me.
- 8:26Two things can be true. The Kardashians can be so
- 8:29harmful and damaging to the beauty standard and young girl
- 8:33self esteem while also being the victims of it themselves because
- 8:38they did not invent this. This is not something that they
- 8:41personally created and they get a lot of, I think, in my
- 8:45opinion, my opinion, unnecessary or misdirected Flack for like
- 8:51people just putting all of the blame on them.
- 8:53It's easy for us to just look at the Kardashians and say all of
- 8:56the problems with like the beauty standard and women's self
- 8:59esteem, all of that can be placed on them.
- 9:02That is just not the case. But, you know, I think we also
- 9:05need to look at not just them being the victims of the
- 9:08industry and of, you know, beauty, unrealistic beauty
- 9:11standards themselves, but also the victims of Kris Jenner, like
- 9:17Kylie and Kendall, especially. They were thrust or forced into
- 9:22this from being children. Kylie had the media scrutinizing
- 9:27her face from the time she was like 7 or whenever she first
- 9:30went on the Kardashian. She was like a child and people
- 9:32were making fun of her lips. I think it's fine not to have
- 9:34sympathy for them. I get it.
- 9:35We don't need to have sympathy for billionaires.
- 9:37And I think these scenes that we have seen where Kylie's breaking
- 9:42down like this. And there was another scene
- 9:43where Kylie was talking about, like how they need to talk about
- 9:46the unrealistic beauty standards that they set.
- 9:48This is them trying, in my opinion, to be really relatable.
- 9:52I think we're seeing that celebrities are becoming much
- 9:55more authentic, sharing much more of themselves with younger
- 9:58audiences if they want to maintain relevancy.
- 10:01And I think this is the Kardashians way of doing that,
- 10:04of like sharing these very staged scenes of trying to
- 10:10almost humanize them for us so that we stay on board with them.
- 10:14Anyways, the next story that I have for you guys.
- 10:17So Taylor Swift has seemingly responded to the dig made by Foo
- 10:22Fighters leading man. So over the weekend, Foo
- 10:26Fighters lead Dave Grohl made a dig at Taylor at their show,
- 10:29saying that she doesn't play live for her entire concerts.
- 10:33He said, quote, so we like to call our tour the errors tour.
- 10:36Sorry, errors, errors, errors, errors, you know, make a
- 10:40mistake. I feel like that's going to get
- 10:43confusing. We've had more than a few errors
- 10:46and more than a few fucking eras as well.
- 10:48Just a couple. That's because we actually play
- 10:51live. What?
- 10:54OK, rude. So last night, Taylor at the
- 10:57Eras Tour defended her band against this quip.
- 11:01She said. What you just did is an
- 11:04unforgettable moment in not just my life, but every single one of
- 11:07our crew, the band that's going to be playing live for you for 3
- 11:101/2 hours tonight, they deserve this so much and so does every
- 11:13one of my fellow performers. And you just gave that to us so
- 11:15generously. It will never forget.
- 11:18It was very like casual. But her saying we're going to
- 11:20play live to you for 3 1/2 hours.
- 11:22My band will play live. You know, I do think it was her
- 11:25coming to their defense. And I just want to say like, it
- 11:29is obviously strategic. Taylor not singing for the
- 11:34entire 3 1/2 hours of every airs tour.
- 11:37Like think about how many concerts she is doing.
- 11:39She is doing a three and a half hour concert back-to-back to
- 11:42back-to-back for months on end. And she's been doing this now
- 11:45for like almost two years. So like obviously she is going
- 11:48to need to be strategic about when she lip syncs in her
- 11:53concert and when she can actually sing.
- 11:55I don't think that's like some controversial thing.
- 11:59I think it's very well understood and a respected
- 12:02decision. It's it's a necessary decision.
- 12:05So that's also me just coming to another billionaire's defense on
- 12:10this day. OK, wait, before I get into my
- 12:13final story, the girls keep telling me like Alex and
- 12:16Annabelle, who work for me, keep telling me I need to cover the
- 12:19Paris poo like saga that's going on on Tiktok.
- 12:23And I don't have any notes on it.
- 12:25But I will give you guys like a really high level recap.
- 12:28I'm not on this side of Tiktok, but essentially what is
- 12:30happening? So Paris is hosting the
- 12:33Olympics. They built an Olympic sized
- 12:36swimming pool for the water sports.
- 12:39And the swimming pool that they built was just a little bit too
- 12:43small apparently. So they spent all this money
- 12:46building it. It was just not quite Olympic
- 12:48size. I don't even know how you fuck
- 12:50that up. But they can't use it.
- 12:51So they're like, that's OK, we'll do swimming and whatever
- 12:55else in the CN, which is like the river that goes through
- 12:57Paris. That river, it's been illegal to
- 13:00swim in that river for a very long time because it is so
- 13:03contaminated. It is filled with like sewage
- 13:06and garbage and it's so disgusting.
- 13:08So they've spent like billions of dollars allegedly to clean
- 13:11out the CN. They cleaned it out and it's
- 13:14still brown. So then there was like this
- 13:17website that went up where people that live in Paris were
- 13:20saying like, we're going to shit in the CN to like basically say
- 13:25fuck you to the government for spending all of this taxpayer
- 13:29money on, you know, building a swimming pool that wasn't quite
- 13:32right. And then now cleaning out this
- 13:34river that's not even fucking clean.
- 13:36We're going to have all these. I mean, of course they don't
- 13:38want like their city overrun with tourists.
- 13:40Anyways. During the Olympics, it was like
- 13:41this protest, like this shitting protest.
- 13:44So because of this whole drama, then the Prime Minister was
- 13:48like, I'll swim in the CN to, you know, prove that it's clean
- 13:52enough. And then of course, everybody
- 13:55just shitting it, I guess. So now they're like, never mind,
- 13:59we're actually going to postpone me swimming in the CN.
- 14:03So now everybody's making jokes on TikTok about how like the
- 14:05actual Olympic medal is who survives after swimming in the
- 14:10CN because they're like, this is so contaminated, like these,
- 14:13everyone is going to get sick. So that's what's going on on
- 14:16Paris, Poop Talk, Annabelle and Alex.
- 14:20Now you can stop asking me to cover it, OK?
- 14:24Anyways, it's pretty wild. And it's actually kind of funny,
- 14:26but like, also disgusting and sad, OK.
- 14:29And the last story that I have for you guys is that MTV News
- 14:32has archived all of its website content.
- 14:36So last year, MTV News shuttered amid financial struggles.
- 14:41Surprise, surprise, every publisher has been going through
- 14:43shit like that. But today, they have officially
- 14:46archived over 2 decades worth of content.
- 14:51So that is music history, pop culture history.
- 14:55Think about all the bylines that these journalists now have just
- 14:59lost. It's like, you know, years
- 15:00possibly for some of them of their work that they can no
- 15:04longer access. I'll read some tweets, Patrick
- 15:07Hoskin, the former music editor at MTV News, wrote.
- 15:10So mtvnews.com no longer exists. Eight years of my life are gone
- 15:15without a trace, all because it didn't fit some executives
- 15:18bottom lines. Infuriating is too small a word,
- 15:21Crystal Bell, who is now culture editor at Mashable and did work
- 15:26as entertainment director of MTV News, wrote.
- 15:28Sickening to see the entire MTV News archive wiped from the
- 15:33Internet. Decades of music history gone,
- 15:36including some very early K pop stories, and then Rolling Stone
- 15:39senior writer Brian Hyatt wrote. This is disgraceful.
- 15:43They've completely wiped the MTV News archive.
- 15:46Decades of pop culture history research material gone and why?
- 15:51And I wanted to cover this because this is a in ongoing
- 15:55discussion I am seeing online where people are talking about
- 15:57how the Internet, like quite literally is just not forever.
- 16:00There was such a narrative, you know, when we were younger, our
- 16:03parents would be like, don't post anything that you wouldn't
- 16:05want to be kind of attached to you for the rest of your life
- 16:09online. And this is one of so many
- 16:13instances where full websites, social media platforms.
- 16:17I talked about this in my Myspace episode, but like,
- 16:20Myspace is wiped clean. You can't find anything from
- 16:23Myspace, from I think before 2016, something like that,
- 16:27because there's too much content out there.
- 16:29There's no way to, like, properly archive it.
- 16:32And we are at risk of losing like massive amounts of
- 16:36information in this whole, like, generation.
- 16:39Like in this kind of boom that we're experiencing in the last
- 16:42probably 10-15 years, there are just decades wiped off the
- 16:47Internet constantly. So that's very sad and scary on
- 16:52one hand. On the other hand, it's good
- 16:55news for all of our drunk Facebook pics from when we were
- 16:57like 15. No, but for real, it's actually
- 17:00really, really wild. I know there are of course lots
- 17:03of journalists talking about this kind of thing, but it's a
- 17:06very interesting topic. Let me know actually if you guys
- 17:09want me to do a deep dive into this.
- 17:10I think that's a very interesting side of the Internet
- 17:13right now that maybe is not as commonly understood or known if
- 17:19you're not like really deep in the weeds, but nothing is
- 17:23forever on the Internet is what we are learning.
- 17:26Anyways guys, that's it for today.
- 17:28Thank you so much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 17:31I love you guys so much. Please remember to rate review
- 17:33and subscribe. It helps me so much.
- 17:35It helps me grow. It helps me keep going.
- 17:38I will have let the girls game tomorrow and then be back for
- 17:41Mini Scroll on Thursday. OK, bye.
