- 2:06Speaker 2: receive reports of a vicious new racket growing in your city,
- 2:09Speaker 2: the television repair racket. The repairman lie overcharge bill you
- 2:14Speaker 2: for work not done for parts not needed for parts
- 2:17Speaker 2: they don't install your job.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Stop them.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Drag Net the documented drama of an actual crime. For
- 2:35Speaker 4: the next thirty minutes, in cooperation of the Los Angeles
- 2:38Speaker 4: Police Department, you will travel step by step on the
- 2:41Speaker 4: side of the law through an actual case transcribed from
- 2:43Speaker 4: official police buyos, from beginning to end, from crime to punishment.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Dragnet is the story of your police force in action.
- 2:55Speaker 5: It was Monday, January nineteenth, was overcast in Los Angeles
- 3:00Speaker 5: in the day watch out of Bunco Detail. My partner's
- 3:02Speaker 5: Ben Ramero. The boss is Captain McCauley. My name's Friday.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Who was nine fifteen am when we got to the
- 3:08Speaker 5: third floor of the Los Angeles Daily News, the Assistant
- 3:11Speaker 5: City Editor's office.
- 3:13Speaker 6: All right, Friday, come on in so down.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Good morning, Jack, like you to meet my partner, Ben Ramero. Ben,
- 3:18Speaker 5: this is Jack Connett, staff writer for the Daily News.
- 3:20Speaker 7: All right, can they I don't know you're Ben, Sit down, fellas. Thanks.
- 3:24Speaker 6: We just left the skipper over at the City Hall.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Did the Captain briefly on this thing?
- 3:28Speaker 8: Yeah, he gave us a parcel, Phil and we've been
- 3:30Speaker 8: working on it from our end in about two weeks now.
- 3:32Speaker 7: Well, Paul Price, he's our radio TV editor. Paul and
- 3:35Speaker 7: I had a long session with Captain mccaully yesterday and
- 3:37Speaker 7: I guess now we're all ready.
- 3:38Speaker 6: To move on this thing. We'll do everything we can.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Would you like to fill Ben in and what you
- 3:42Speaker 6: told me yesterday on the phone. Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 7: Well, Price was the one who began getting the first
- 3:46Speaker 7: complaints here at the paper. Tremendous number of his readers
- 3:48Speaker 7: wrote him complaints about being victimized by a crooked television repairman.
- 3:52Speaker 6: About being charged too much for repair.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Partly Yeah, some of the people even sent in receipts
- 3:56Speaker 7: with their letters. So they felt the guys who fixed
- 3:58Speaker 7: their sets were dreaming up on neces sary repairs, charging
- 4:01Speaker 7: him for work not done. So said they knew they
- 4:03Speaker 7: were built for parts not even replaced or installed in
- 4:06Speaker 7: their sets.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Ben Jack told me yesterday about a letter he got
- 4:08Speaker 5: in some men said he felt he'd been over charged
- 4:10Speaker 5: and he just started to belly ache about it.
- 4:12Speaker 7: Yeah, a fellow to the name of Vincent said, he
- 4:14Speaker 7: just put up an old fashioned squawk about it, and
- 4:15Speaker 7: repairman brought the price down at least one third.
- 4:18Speaker 6: That doesn't sound very good.
- 4:19Speaker 7: We kind of figured operators like that must have too
- 4:21Speaker 7: many repair sets on hand that their customers can't afford
- 4:24Speaker 7: to bail out.
- 4:25Speaker 6: That's why they cut. Sounds like a ClearCase of a
- 4:27Speaker 6: two bit jip, doesn't it. Something's got to be done
- 4:29Speaker 6: about it.
- 4:30Speaker 7: We're ready to give it a big plan our paper
- 4:32Speaker 7: expose the fraud for what it really is. Captain McCauley says,
- 4:34Speaker 7: Chief Parker's okay on our plan, and we can count
- 4:36Speaker 7: on full police cooperation.
- 4:38Speaker 6: That's the way we got it, Jack. We were told
- 4:39Speaker 6: to work with you people till we broke this thing.
- 4:41Speaker 7: Fine, we dug up a little amunation to start with.
- 4:43Speaker 7: I think went around and interviewed about fifteen different television
- 4:47Speaker 7: repairman in various neighborhoods, and about three out of five
- 4:49Speaker 7: gave me the same pitch.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Whether they know you were with a newspaper.
- 4:52Speaker 7: No, I told him I was a factory representative. For
- 4:54Speaker 7: a new kind of rosmin Cors Soider company. I was
- 4:57Speaker 7: taking orders. Actually, I dropped in the different stores sh
- 5:00Speaker 7: out to breeze with him, and they didn't seem to
- 5:01Speaker 7: get wise. A couple of even placed orders for the start.
- 5:03Speaker 6: And why did you find that?
- 5:05Speaker 3: Well?
- 5:05Speaker 7: I just wanted to try and get the general attitude
- 5:07Speaker 7: of some of these jip artists, and I really got
- 5:08Speaker 7: an air for One of the last places I hit
- 5:11Speaker 7: was a tiny little hole in the wall out near
- 5:12Speaker 7: Canoga Park. As I say, about two out of five
- 5:15Speaker 7: are honest, hard work and repair man. This fellow was
- 5:17Speaker 7: one of them. What are you getting at, Jack?
- 5:19Speaker 6: For a while, this.
- 5:19Speaker 7: Fellow worked for a guy that employed about five men
- 5:21Speaker 7: in the shop, you know, finally quit him because he
- 5:24Speaker 7: didn't like the way this big operator did business. Fellows
- 5:27Speaker 7: in the next office, I want you to hear it
- 5:28Speaker 7: from him, just as I got it.
- 5:29Speaker 6: Excuse me, young, Okay, heyk will you come in please? Sure? Master?
- 5:38Speaker 7: This is Hank Corter, Sergeant Friday, Sergeant Ben or Merrow
- 5:40Speaker 7: Police Department. Hank, I wonder if you tell these officers
- 5:43Speaker 7: a little bit what you told me about kill Gore
- 5:45Speaker 7: TV specialists.
- 5:46Speaker 6: All right, Now, suppose.
- 5:47Speaker 7: I'm a customer and I commend to kill Gore's I
- 5:49Speaker 7: don't like the size of my repair bill. What were
- 5:51Speaker 7: you instructed to say? We generally tried to talk him
- 5:54Speaker 7: out of any complaint. Suppose I complained about all the
- 5:56Speaker 7: multiple charges. I wanted an explanation of the work he did.
- 5:58Speaker 9: What then, tell you that it wouldn't do any good
- 6:01Speaker 9: to explain You wouldn't understand all the technical stuff anyway.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Uh huh, tell us killed Gore's attitude with the customer.
- 6:06Speaker 10: You mean about the loose wires test?
- 6:08Speaker 6: Yeah? Please?
- 6:09Speaker 9: Well, kill Gore used to tell us that if we
- 6:10Speaker 9: only charged fifty cents for fixing the loose wire, the
- 6:12Speaker 9: customer wouldn't believe we really fixed his set.
- 6:15Speaker 10: So we used to charge quite a lot more.
- 6:17Speaker 6: Well, how much more?
- 6:18Speaker 9: For example, for Nichols worth of wire, we'd usually charge
- 6:20Speaker 9: four dollars and.
- 6:21Speaker 11: Seventy five cents. Pretty fair profit, and it's a real run.
- 6:25Speaker 6: What else can you tell us?
- 6:26Speaker 9: Ah, Well, we'd never let a customer watch any of
- 6:28Speaker 9: the TV repair a job for example, for customer cause
- 6:31Speaker 9: it says he thinks.
- 6:32Speaker 11: The two is blown out and it'll only be a
- 6:33Speaker 11: simple replacement job.
- 6:34Speaker 9: In his home, and we'd tell him the parts are
- 6:36Speaker 9: getting hard to get, and we'd have to take his
- 6:38Speaker 9: set into the shop and charge him a higher rate
- 6:40Speaker 9: because we had to pay black market prices for the tube.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Was there any truth in that? I mean about the
- 6:44Speaker 6: tubes being hard to get? Not much.
- 6:46Speaker 9: Some of them are getting a little hard to get,
- 6:48Speaker 9: But we never paid any black market prices at Killed Goys.
- 6:50Speaker 10: We just slugged the customer, right, So tell.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Him about how you used to swap parts on a
- 6:54Speaker 6: new set.
- 6:54Speaker 9: Eh, Well, we lots of times pared a new tube
- 6:56Speaker 9: for one NOTTS so good, one NOTTS so good. We
- 6:59Speaker 9: put in a set with a bad too, and the
- 7:01Speaker 9: bad tube would exchange the factory under one of you guarantee.
- 7:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't miss an angle, do they? Well that's it.
- 7:07Speaker 7: You've heard from a man who couldn't stomach such practice
- 7:09Speaker 7: and quit went into business. A little bit of a
- 7:11Speaker 7: shop isn't doing too well, are you, Hank?
- 7:13Speaker 6: No?
- 7:13Speaker 9: But I think I can build up the business that
- 7:16Speaker 9: don't make quite as much profit as Killed Goers.
- 7:17Speaker 11: But I don't chisolm my customers either.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Thanks a lot, Hank. I wonder if you'd wait in
- 7:21Speaker 6: the next office for me.
- 7:22Speaker 11: Sure, I hope I've helped a little bit to crack
- 7:24Speaker 11: down on some of these guys.
- 7:25Speaker 6: Well, we think you have, Hank, thanks a lot.
- 7:27Speaker 11: Nice to match him, right, See letter seems like a nice.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Hey he is.
- 7:33Speaker 7: I've checked on him, and I've talked with some of
- 7:35Speaker 7: his customers since I met him.
- 7:36Speaker 6: He's honest. It's a pretty vicious racket in it. Yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 6: I want to be stopped now.
- 7:40Speaker 7: Television is a wonderful medium of entertainment, but a lot
- 7:42Speaker 7: of the country doesn't have it yet. But when the
- 7:44Speaker 7: cable goes through and it finally opens up that people
- 7:46Speaker 7: should know about, the swindlers and crooks will try to
- 7:48Speaker 7: drip him.
- 7:48Speaker 8: Yeah, it's the same way when radio first came. It
- 7:51Speaker 8: always seems like when anything new comes along, anything a
- 7:54Speaker 8: little complicated, maybe a little too involved for the average guy.
- 7:56Speaker 8: Have a few smart punks victimize him, robbed the consumer line.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Well, and naturally we got to have some positive evidence
- 8:02Speaker 5: before we can finally complaint with the city attorney on
- 8:04Speaker 5: this thing.
- 8:05Speaker 6: Yeah, are you follow us to any ideas where.
- 8:06Speaker 8: To start on the best way to crack down on
- 8:08Speaker 8: these crouckt operators is to catch them red handed with
- 8:10Speaker 8: evidence and hold up in court. Yeah, we think maybe
- 8:13Speaker 8: we've got an idea.
- 8:14Speaker 5: But we were talking to Dick Saunders over in our
- 8:16Speaker 5: sound lab and he says that he can bungle a
- 8:18Speaker 5: new TV set and we can market and photograph it
- 8:21Speaker 5: before it goes out to.
- 8:22Speaker 7: Be repaired, and when it's returned or effort's fixed, the
- 8:25Speaker 7: life what we need to go to court on.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Uh, yeah, that's it. We can operate right out of
- 8:28Speaker 6: one of our own homes and all we have to
- 8:30Speaker 6: do is hope the repairment overcharges us or tries the gippis. Yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 6: that's right, let's hope it works. From what we've heard.
- 8:35Speaker 6: It's got to ten am.
- 8:40Speaker 5: The staff writer, Jack Connette, Ben and I drove back downtown.
- 8:44Speaker 5: On the way, it was decided that we'd use Cannet's
- 8:47Speaker 5: home as the place from which to operate. It was
- 8:49Speaker 5: centrally located in an average neighborhood. When we got back
- 8:53Speaker 5: to our office, we contacted one of the local television
- 8:55Speaker 5: dealers and asked for the loan of one of their sets.
- 8:59Speaker 5: They recommended Kate Halbert because the chassis is easily accessible
- 9:02Speaker 5: and any trouble could be located quickly because parks are visible.
- 9:06Speaker 5: A sixteen inch k Halbert console model was sent to
- 9:09Speaker 5: our sound lab. Ten eighteen am. We met with Dick Saunders,
- 9:12Speaker 5: our police lab technician.
- 9:15Speaker 12: Here's a set sixteen inch console model, serial numbers CE
- 9:19Speaker 12: two eight one seven.
- 9:20Speaker 6: Nine oh one. What have you done to it to day?
- 9:22Speaker 12: Well, first off, I tested the set and it performed perfectly.
- 9:25Speaker 12: It's a good set, brings in a fine picture. See
- 9:29Speaker 12: funny test Pattern's fine. Huh, Yeah, it's good. Tested all
- 9:36Speaker 12: the tubes all okay. How are you marking the set? Yeah?
- 9:39Speaker 12: Shame you know two about it?
- 9:42Speaker 6: Here?
- 9:44Speaker 12: Now if you look closely here at the base of
- 9:47Speaker 12: the socket, see it.
- 9:49Speaker 6: What's that this is? It isn't it?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Dick?
- 9:50Speaker 6: A little tiny dot of green paint.
- 9:52Speaker 12: That's right, Ben, I'm marking every part of the set
- 9:55Speaker 12: with his tiny green dot.
- 9:57Speaker 6: Works good.
- 9:58Speaker 7: I didn't spot it out out anyone else w especially
- 10:00Speaker 7: if they didn't know about it.
- 10:01Speaker 6: Yeah. That so we're hoping.
- 10:03Speaker 12: In addition to this type marketing, we've taken all serial
- 10:05Speaker 12: numbers off the tubes and various parts. Anything that carried
- 10:08Speaker 12: any form of coding we took down. All major components
- 10:12Speaker 12: have been marked, transformers, coils, condensers, tuning in it so on.
- 10:16Speaker 6: Did you get any pictures in it?
- 10:18Speaker 12: Yeah, we did. Took photographs of the set in and
- 10:20Speaker 12: out of the cabinet. Took them from four different angles,
- 10:23Speaker 12: just to be sure we were well covered.
- 10:24Speaker 6: Well, how did you bungle it?
- 10:25Speaker 12: Well, here's what I did to put the set out
- 10:28Speaker 12: of commission. I burned out the filament of the five
- 10:30Speaker 12: U four g lough Voll direct fire tube. What's the
- 10:33Speaker 12: cost of that particular tube, souders, Well, this tube ordinarily
- 10:36Speaker 12: retails for a dollar sixty five cents.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Well, what does that do to the set? I mean
- 10:40Speaker 6: burning out the tube.
- 10:41Speaker 12: By burning out that filament, we cause the sound and
- 10:44Speaker 12: picture circuits to be completely inoperative.
- 10:46Speaker 5: It won't work at all until that particular tube is
- 10:48Speaker 5: replaced by a good one.
- 10:49Speaker 10: That's right, Joe.
- 10:50Speaker 6: Well, how big a job would it be to trace
- 10:51Speaker 6: of troubling?
- 10:52Speaker 12: Well, could easily be detected by casual observation or by
- 10:56Speaker 12: noting that the tube, normally very hot, is cold.
- 10:58Speaker 6: How much time would you say that request to make
- 11:00Speaker 6: a repair like this?
- 11:01Speaker 12: Ooh, I just may not. Over half hour would be
- 11:04Speaker 12: required a place to set an operating order?
- 11:06Speaker 6: Half hour?
- 11:07Speaker 5: Okay, thanks a lot, Dick, Are you're going to take
- 11:09Speaker 5: care of getting your set out to Cannet's home right away.
- 11:11Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, there's a dress right here. We'll get it
- 11:13Speaker 12: right out, all right. Fine, if you can try to
- 11:15Speaker 12: get whoever repairs is set to give you an itemized
- 11:17Speaker 12: bill of all work done in parts and stall right
- 11:20Speaker 12: in case you call more than one outfit today, here's
- 11:24Speaker 12: an extra bad five or four gtube. Thank you, Nick,
- 11:27Speaker 12: anything you'd like to.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Know, No, I think that about covers it for me. Jack.
- 11:31Speaker 6: One more thing.
- 11:32Speaker 7: I was just wondering if somebody spots the trouble right
- 11:34Speaker 7: away and replaces the tube, what do you think they
- 11:36Speaker 7: ought to charge to labor and all.
- 11:38Speaker 12: I checked through RTA on that this morning. They said
- 11:41Speaker 12: to make a house call and replace the detective tube
- 11:44Speaker 12: should not exceed four dollars and fifty cents.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Okay, thanks, That does it for now? Yeah, I guess so.
- 11:49Speaker 12: Well you're all set, then, I think we'll get what
- 11:52Speaker 12: you're after.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Well, we should. The odds are all on our side.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Ten thirty am, Monday, January nineteenth, we left the sound
- 12:03Speaker 5: Lab on West First Street and walked back to Bunco Division.
- 12:06Speaker 6: We met with Captain McCauley and filled him in.
- 12:08Speaker 5: We gave him the newspaper man Jack Cannett's address and
- 12:11Speaker 5: told him he could reach us there. The Console model
- 12:15Speaker 5: television set was delivered to Canet's home and properly installed.
- 12:19Speaker 5: When we arrived at his home, we started going through
- 12:21Speaker 5: the yellow classified section of the phone directory. We made
- 12:24Speaker 5: a list of several TV service stores, just picked at random.
- 12:28Speaker 5: We chose a wide variety. We picked stores that were
- 12:31Speaker 5: listed with large boxed in ads, stores that carried no ads,
- 12:35Speaker 5: just a listing. Ben called two places and staggered the
- 12:39Speaker 5: call so that the repairman would arrive about one hour apart.
- 12:43Speaker 5: It was eleven thirty am when the first man made
- 12:45Speaker 5: his service call Bart's TV Experts on Hollywood Boulevard. It
- 12:49Speaker 5: took him forty five minutes. Was twelve fifteen when he
- 12:52Speaker 5: left Jack Cannett's home.
- 12:53Speaker 8: It must have been one of the two out of five.
- 12:55Speaker 8: Huh yeah, he seems okay. I wonder if I could
- 12:57Speaker 8: see that bill. Oh here you Gorjoe. Thanks, It looks okay.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Replace five U four G tube dollars, sixty five service charge,
- 13:07Speaker 5: two fifty total charges four dollars and fifteen cents.
- 13:10Speaker 8: That kind of bears out connects thinking doesn't remember. When
- 13:13Speaker 8: we ask him how many men work in the shop,
- 13:14Speaker 8: he said he's alone. Yeah, I think you'll find that
- 13:16Speaker 8: that's a pretty good barometer. All the servicemen working alone
- 13:19Speaker 8: aren't like this guy, But the bigger percentage of the
- 13:21Speaker 8: honest ones are.
- 13:22Speaker 6: When's the next one due to arrive in any minute?
- 13:24Speaker 3: Now?
- 13:24Speaker 8: Call the place with the name of Cheney's Video Repairs.
- 13:26Speaker 8: They over on Beverly Boulevard and had a big end.
- 13:29Speaker 8: It looks like a pretty big outvent. Oh here's that
- 13:31Speaker 8: other defective tube that Dick gave us.
- 13:33Speaker 6: Yeah, better get it in. He's sad.
- 13:35Speaker 8: Yeah, let's see here we are. Five few, four, g Okay,
- 13:43Speaker 8: here you go, thanks Joe, here's a new one the
- 13:45Speaker 8: guy put in.
- 13:45Speaker 6: Got it?
- 13:46Speaker 8: Okay, I get this back on again. Okay, yeah, fine,
- 13:58Speaker 8: better turn it on to make sure it's not working.
- 14:00Speaker 6: I got it. How about the two bend? Can you see?
- 14:03Speaker 6: Is it lighting up?
- 14:04Speaker 12: No?
- 14:04Speaker 6: Not yet. I pushed his set back against the wall.
- 14:07Speaker 6: We better leave it on for a while, Jack, just
- 14:09Speaker 6: to make sure. Yeah, here we are. I gave you
- 14:13Speaker 6: the other tube. Yeah, I got it right here in
- 14:14Speaker 6: my pocket.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:15Speaker 6: I'd like to try something if you follower thing, it'll
- 14:17Speaker 6: be okay, what's it?
- 14:18Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:19Speaker 7: I got a good little camera, like a three y
- 14:21Speaker 7: F you know, Candid. I think maybe if I turn
- 14:24Speaker 7: all the three way lamps up to four. Here's a
- 14:26Speaker 7: triple A fast film. It's in the camera now, maybe
- 14:29Speaker 7: we can grab some shots at the gun while he works.
- 14:31Speaker 5: What do you think, Well, if you're careful, don't let
- 14:33Speaker 5: him get wise. Maybe you ought to shoot some of
- 14:36Speaker 5: all of us, just so he doesn't think anything about it.
- 14:37Speaker 7: Yeah, that's what I figured out. Just sit down on
- 14:39Speaker 7: that chair over there. But the set make him think
- 14:41Speaker 7: I'm just testing or something. I think I can bring
- 14:43Speaker 7: it off without arousing any suspicion. Okay, by get anything,
- 14:46Speaker 7: the guy's out of line. Will run the shots in
- 14:48Speaker 7: the daily news.
- 14:49Speaker 8: What do you figure on doing, Jackie gonna run a
- 14:51Speaker 8: series on the TV repair racket.
- 14:52Speaker 7: Yeah, that's the plan, leap Pain. He's our executive editor.
- 14:55Speaker 7: He thinks it's high time somebody exposed a swindle in
- 14:57Speaker 7: the paper and it'll be the next service man. I
- 15:00Speaker 7: let him in, right, better turn off the set.
- 15:02Speaker 10: Yeah, television repair. That's why I learn from change and
- 15:07Speaker 10: Beverly Blue Boy.
- 15:08Speaker 6: Oh yeah, come on here, thanks.
- 15:11Speaker 10: Oh what's used to be the trouble?
- 15:13Speaker 6: We don't know?
- 15:13Speaker 10: Is that's right over here?
- 15:14Speaker 3: Oh?
- 15:15Speaker 10: Thanks?
- 15:20Speaker 13: Kay Halbert? Huh sixteen inch nice set? Oh what seems
- 15:24Speaker 13: to be wrong? If I knows something? Nothing seems to work.
- 15:27Speaker 10: What do you mean?
- 15:28Speaker 6: No?
- 15:28Speaker 10: Picture's tall? How about sound?
- 15:31Speaker 6: Nothing?
- 15:31Speaker 10: Uh huh, I'll be alright to pull the set away
- 15:34Speaker 10: from the wall.
- 15:34Speaker 6: Here, go right are and give you a hand.
- 15:36Speaker 10: Oh no, it's sorry, I can handle well.
- 15:41Speaker 6: I make some tools out.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Uh.
- 15:51Speaker 10: How long you have this set?
- 15:53Speaker 6: Oh about two or three months?
- 15:57Speaker 10: Dark in here? I wonder if we could have a
- 15:58Speaker 10: little more light.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Sure, I'm gonna get these lamps up for you.
- 16:01Speaker 10: Thanks.
- 16:06Speaker 6: How's that?
- 16:07Speaker 13: Oh fine? Thanks? Say it's a nice little camera you
- 16:11Speaker 13: got there. What kind is it?
- 16:13Speaker 7: I like three f one to five limbs? An experimenting
- 16:16Speaker 7: with some new indoor film. Do you mind being a
- 16:18Speaker 7: guinea pig?
- 16:19Speaker 10: It's all right with me. Shaneaway's good film on me, though, I.
- 16:23Speaker 6: Think you're gonna get anything in this light yet.
- 16:25Speaker 10: Maybe worth a try anyway, I don't know about this set.
- 16:29Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 16:30Speaker 3: Well?
- 16:30Speaker 13: It looks bad, hard to tell without getting it down
- 16:33Speaker 13: to the shop. Looks to me like your blocking transformers gone.
- 16:36Speaker 6: And what's that mean? Well, I take the set in,
- 16:39Speaker 6: can't fix it here?
- 16:40Speaker 10: Huh, I'm afraid not.
- 16:41Speaker 13: You see, your parts are getting a little hard to
- 16:43Speaker 13: get these days, as set manufacturers are having a tough
- 16:45Speaker 13: time getting quality parts, and sometimes we have to spend several.
- 16:49Speaker 10: Hours just tracing the trouble.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Well, I guess that knocks out the ball game tonight,
- 16:53Speaker 5: I fellas sorry, take a couple of.
- 16:56Speaker 10: Days at least, want to really check it over.
- 16:58Speaker 6: Sure it's not a tube? What kind of stuff? Just
- 17:00Speaker 6: blue eye?
- 17:01Speaker 13: No, that's what most people think every time their set
- 17:03Speaker 13: goes out. It's definitely not a tube. Oh, it might
- 17:06Speaker 13: be some bad tubes. But your trouble's a great deal
- 17:08Speaker 13: more than that.
- 17:09Speaker 6: I think you got any idea what it's gonna run us.
- 17:12Speaker 10: It's hard to say right off hand.
- 17:14Speaker 6: Four or five dollars.
- 17:15Speaker 10: No, it's gonna run more than that.
- 17:17Speaker 13: I'll take the setting with me now, and I'll get
- 17:19Speaker 13: it back to you as soon as possible.
- 17:20Speaker 6: You're gonna take the whole set, No.
- 17:21Speaker 13: I'll just pull a chassis out of the cabinet. Leave
- 17:23Speaker 13: the cabinet here. Oh say, by the way, yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 10: If everything turns out, it you'd like to see those pictures.
- 17:30Speaker 6: Yeah, if everything turns out, you will.
- 17:42Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet Authentic Cases from official police files.
- 17:54Speaker 5: Thursday, January twenty second, nine am, the TV set was
- 17:59Speaker 5: returned to reporter Jack Cannett's home after having been repaired
- 18:03Speaker 5: by a servicing company called Cheney's Video Repairs. We found
- 18:08Speaker 5: that the man who had come to Cannet's home to
- 18:09Speaker 5: make the service call was Robert V. Cheney, the owner
- 18:12Speaker 5: of the service outfit.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Well.
- 18:15Speaker 5: As soon as the set was returned, we called the
- 18:17Speaker 5: sound lab and had it picked up and taken downtown.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Sergeant Marshall Zeno, who was working with us out of
- 18:23Speaker 5: Bunco Detail, called and said that Dick Saunders had finished
- 18:26Speaker 5: his investigation and wanted to see us right away. Ten
- 18:30Speaker 5: thirty am. We went down to West First Street the
- 18:32Speaker 5: Police sound Lab. Saunders went over his findings with us.
- 18:37Speaker 12: Here are the photographs before and after. Before we go
- 18:41Speaker 12: over these, let me show you what we found out
- 18:43Speaker 12: about your repair job. Okay, Oh, here's that receipt Chaney
- 18:49Speaker 12: he gave you when he returned the set. Yeah, here's
- 18:52Speaker 12: what the repair bill states. Replaced vertico blocking transformer replaced
- 18:57Speaker 12: five U four G tube, six AU six tube and
- 19:00Speaker 12: twelve AU seven tube.
- 19:02Speaker 6: And the charge was thirty two dollars and fifty cents.
- 19:04Speaker 12: Plus ninety eight cents tax, or a total of thirty
- 19:06Speaker 12: three dollars and forty eight cents.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Well, how does that break down, Dick?
- 19:09Speaker 12: What appears that the ninety eight cents tax was for
- 19:11Speaker 12: twenty eight dollars worth of material used in the repair.
- 19:14Speaker 6: Did they really put in all that stuff?
- 19:15Speaker 12: You got yourself a prize package in that outfit. All
- 19:18Speaker 12: they did was to replace the five U four G tube.
- 19:21Speaker 6: That's all they did.
- 19:22Speaker 12: Yeh, here's the capper. The five U four g is
- 19:25Speaker 12: a war surplus tube, but it works. Okay.
- 19:27Speaker 6: What else did you find?
- 19:29Speaker 12: According to the photographs and coding system, no vertical blocking
- 19:32Speaker 12: transformers six a U six tube or twelve AU seven
- 19:35Speaker 12: tube were replaced. Let's get back the potus here. You
- 19:41Speaker 12: can take these along for your package. You see in
- 19:44Speaker 12: the set here, you know, let me show you see
- 19:49Speaker 12: this tube is the only part mentioned in the receiver.
- 19:51Speaker 12: Otherwise it doesn't carry our green paint coating system. Let
- 19:55Speaker 12: me turn the set around. Here the channel selector here this, yeah,
- 20:02Speaker 12: that's the tuning knob to bring in the station's channel selector.
- 20:05Speaker 12: They call it turn't it?
- 20:06Speaker 6: Okay?
- 20:08Speaker 12: Falls off pretty easy, doesn't it?
- 20:10Speaker 6: Sure does? He? Thanks?
- 20:13Speaker 12: They left out the spring clip in here. It should
- 20:16Speaker 12: have been put back in because that's what hold of
- 20:17Speaker 12: the knob secured to the shaft.
- 20:19Speaker 6: I've had that happen on radio sets.
- 20:20Speaker 12: Yeah. Sometimes they're a little stubborn to put back in.
- 20:23Speaker 12: But a good repairman never leave it. H Yeah, something
- 20:25Speaker 12: else here to sit around in the back.
- 20:28Speaker 6: I'll get it there. Oh, thanks Ben?
- 20:32Speaker 12: See her See how loose the chassis he is in
- 20:35Speaker 12: the cabinet now?
- 20:37Speaker 6: It sure is.
- 20:38Speaker 12: Wasn't that way when we got it from the Kay
- 20:39Speaker 12: Halbert dealer anymore than the channel selector was faulty. Perfect
- 20:42Speaker 12: shap from the guy. Look at the size of that chassis.
- 20:45Speaker 12: It's pretty heavy, yeah it is. Originally there were four
- 20:48Speaker 12: screws used to hold the chassis in the wood cabinet.
- 20:50Speaker 12: Cheney's repair outfit only put one back in. One screw
- 20:53Speaker 12: to hold that heavy chassis. It's a pretty sloppy job,
- 20:55Speaker 12: all right. You know what they'd probably tell you if
- 20:57Speaker 12: you ask him about this.
- 20:58Speaker 6: It only requires one screw.
- 21:00Speaker 12: The bad repairment can always improve on factory standards, usually
- 21:03Speaker 12: for his own convenience, certainly doesn't improve the product.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Well, it looks like we got what we were after.
- 21:08Speaker 6: I think we got enough, Joe, I do. Let's see
- 21:10Speaker 6: what the city attorney thinks.
- 21:15Speaker 5: We collected all the evidence in the case against Cheney's
- 21:18Speaker 5: video Repairs. We met with Captain McCauley and took it
- 21:21Speaker 5: up to the second floor of the City Hall. We
- 21:23Speaker 5: met with Assistant City Attorney Boyd Taylor and showed him
- 21:25Speaker 5: our findings.
- 21:26Speaker 6: He issued a warrant for the arrest of Robert W.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Cheney, charging him with violation of Section forty four PC,
- 21:32Speaker 5: one count eleven. Thirty am Thursday, January twenty second, Ben
- 21:36Speaker 5: and I drove out to make the arrest.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Jack Kennett went along with us. This is it Cheney's
- 21:42Speaker 6: video repairs. Yeah, come on, Jack, there's Cheney behind the car. Yeah,
- 21:50Speaker 6: oh there, all right?
- 21:52Speaker 10: How's the set working?
- 21:53Speaker 6: All right?
- 21:54Speaker 10: We did a good job on that one. Gave you
- 21:56Speaker 10: a better break on the price, and I thought we could.
- 21:57Speaker 6: You know, police officers, you're under arrest.
- 22:01Speaker 10: Were your kidding?
- 22:01Speaker 13: What for petty theft? Come on, let's go petty theft? Well,
- 22:05Speaker 13: I don't understand. You're the fellows I fix that set
- 22:08Speaker 13: for up and cress and drive.
- 22:09Speaker 10: Aren't you.
- 22:09Speaker 6: That's right? Your bill was a little high, wasn't it.
- 22:11Speaker 10: Oh No, wait a minute. If that's all that's bother,
- 22:13Speaker 10: you know, let's talk it over.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Come on, let's go.
- 22:15Speaker 13: Look, I can fix that up with you guys. Just
- 22:17Speaker 13: tell me how much you want to pay and we'll
- 22:18Speaker 13: work out something.
- 22:19Speaker 5: That seems to be the way you worked to every
- 22:20Speaker 5: PAYI AD deal right from the start, when you didn't
- 22:22Speaker 5: can sell us about it till now.
- 22:24Speaker 13: Well, look, you know how it is in this business.
- 22:26Speaker 13: If you don't charge some customers a little money, they
- 22:28Speaker 13: don't think you did anything to their sets.
- 22:30Speaker 6: You gotta try charging them for just the work you do.
- 22:33Speaker 10: Can't we get together on this thing. Let's just forget
- 22:35Speaker 10: the whole deal.
- 22:36Speaker 13: You don't know me anything. Now Here here, I'll refund
- 22:39Speaker 13: all your money. We'll call it square.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Never mind, just leave them money in the cash register
- 22:42Speaker 6: and get your code.
- 22:44Speaker 8: Can't prove anything anyway, we think we can just step
- 22:46Speaker 8: around the counter this way.
- 22:51Speaker 10: Look, mister, you're not a cop, are you?
- 22:52Speaker 3: Oh not?
- 22:53Speaker 10: Well, then tell them this isn't not a fair deal.
- 22:55Speaker 13: I'll give you back your money, trait. It's a little
- 22:57Speaker 13: late for that, chenny phone. Let's get some the papers
- 23:00Speaker 13: be ruined. You run out of business.
- 23:01Speaker 6: That's the way we got it figured. How many men
- 23:03Speaker 6: you have working here for you? Four? Why this right here?
- 23:10Speaker 6: You ever read this?
- 23:12Speaker 3: What is it?
- 23:13Speaker 10: Oh? The thing from the RTA?
- 23:15Speaker 6: Here? Read article two? Would you?
- 23:18Speaker 3: Two?
- 23:19Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right.
- 23:21Speaker 13: I will conduct myself and my business in an honest
- 23:24Speaker 13: and straightforward manner, meriting and inspiring the confidence of my customers.
- 23:29Speaker 10: Yeah, I know about this.
- 23:30Speaker 6: You remember the RTA Radio Technicians Association at you? Yeah,
- 23:33Speaker 6: I am read Article four?
- 23:35Speaker 13: Would I propose to charge justin fair price for all
- 23:39Speaker 13: professional services rendered?
- 23:41Speaker 6: And I read this article seven.
- 23:44Speaker 13: I will engage only in fair and ethical practices recommended
- 23:47Speaker 13: and approved by the Radio Technicians Association as being conducive
- 23:51Speaker 13: to public confidence.
- 23:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:53Speaker 10: I read all this before.
- 23:54Speaker 6: It's too bad you didn't remember it.
- 24:04Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true, only the
- 24:07Speaker 2: names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 24:09Speaker 4: On April fifteenth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 24:12Speaker 4: eighty two, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 24:15Speaker 4: In a moment, the results of that trial and now
- 24:18Speaker 4: here is our star, Jack Webb.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
- 24:22Speaker 5: In the few remaining moments, we'd like to take this
- 24:25Speaker 5: opportunity to thank you once again for your many kind
- 24:28Speaker 5: letters of encouragement that come in from week to week.
- 24:31Speaker 5: And also we'd like to answer a few questions about
- 24:34Speaker 5: our program which seem common to many of the letters
- 24:36Speaker 5: that we receive from you. Many of you have inquired
- 24:40Speaker 5: why at the end of the program, in recounting the
- 24:43Speaker 5: punishment of the criminal involved in the particular case, we
- 24:47Speaker 5: generally refer to the sentence received as the term prescribed
- 24:51Speaker 5: by law. Well, we use this reference for the following reason.
- 24:57Speaker 5: In the state of California, the length of a convicted
- 24:59Speaker 5: crist criminal's prison term is not set by the court,
- 25:03Speaker 5: but by the state adult authority. Most of the time,
- 25:07Speaker 5: a criminal is merely found guilty by the court and
- 25:10Speaker 5: then sentenced to the state penitentiary. After he serves a
- 25:14Speaker 5: year in prison, the convict has a hearing before this
- 25:18Speaker 5: state adult authority, at which time his actual sentence is set.
- 25:22Speaker 5: So you can see why we can't give you the
- 25:24Speaker 5: actual sentence in many cases. Now, other questions common to
- 25:29Speaker 5: many of your letters concerned some of the authentic technical
- 25:31Speaker 5: police terminology which comes up from time to time on dragnet.
- 25:36Speaker 5: With the help of George Fennemon, we'd like to explain
- 25:38Speaker 5: some of the more common ones for you if we may.
- 25:41Speaker 6: First, you've heard us used the.
- 25:42Speaker 12: Term or the letters APB APB that's in All Points
- 25:47Speaker 12: bulletin a communication dispatched to all divisions and law enforcement
- 25:52Speaker 12: agencies throughout the state.
- 25:54Speaker 6: And then we feel sure that you remember the term
- 25:56Speaker 6: mama sheet.
- 25:58Speaker 2: A mama sheet is the master information inform on a
- 26:00Speaker 2: criminal in a police department file. It contains his complete description,
- 26:05Speaker 2: his habits, relatives, acquaintances, everything about him known to the police.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Thank you, George, and thank you ladies and gentlemen for
- 26:12Speaker 5: your very fine letters from time to time. If we may,
- 26:15Speaker 5: we'll take this opportunity to explain a few more of
- 26:18Speaker 5: our authentic police terminology.
- 26:21Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Robert W. Cheney, owner and operator of Cheney's Video Repairs,
- 26:34Speaker 4: was tried and convicted on several counts of violating Section
- 26:37Speaker 4: forty four PC petty theft. He was fined two hundred
- 26:41Speaker 4: dollars and received the sentence as prescribed by law. Petty
- 26:45Speaker 4: theft is punishable by imprisonment in the County Jail for
- 26:48Speaker 4: not more than six months.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, Dragnett wishes to thank the Los Angeles
- 26:54Speaker 2: Daily News and its feature writer Jack Connett for their
- 26:57Speaker 2: valuable assistance in preparing this case for present. It is
- 27:01Speaker 2: our combined belief and knowledge that not all television repair
- 27:05Speaker 2: servicemen are dishonest and unscrupulous in their practices. A great
- 27:09Speaker 2: percentage of these technicians are forthright and conduct their business
- 27:13Speaker 2: in strict compliance with the Code of Ethics. It is
- 27:16Speaker 2: these men who, when informed of the unfair conditions that
- 27:19Speaker 2: exist in their trade, will drive the dishonest and crooked
- 27:23Speaker 2: from their profession.
- 27:32Speaker 4: You have just heard drag Met, a series of authentic
- 27:35Speaker 4: cases from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office
- 27:38Speaker 4: of Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:43Speaker 6: It's the Silver Jubilee on NBC.
- 27:45Speaker 2: For twenty five years, NBC has been bringing you the
- 27:48Speaker 2: very best in radio entertainment.
- 27:49Speaker 7: Listen now to another exciting story on Counterspy coming up
- 27:52Speaker 7: on MBC.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Welcome back, Well. This was definitely an important episode for
- 28:04Speaker 1: its time. Television was still in the process of adoption
- 28:09Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty only nine percent of American households had
- 28:14Speaker 1: a television set. This would expand to twenty three percent
- 28:20Speaker 1: by the end of nineteen fifty one, so there were
- 28:24Speaker 1: going to be far more television set owners who could
- 28:28Speaker 1: be victimized, so it was viotal to get this warning out.
- 28:32Speaker 1: The timelessness comes back to one comment that Romero made
- 28:38Speaker 1: that the something very similar it happened when radio came out,
- 28:43Speaker 1: and that it happened with every new technology. And while
- 28:47Speaker 1: it's not exactly the same, every new technology, and we
- 28:52Speaker 1: have seen so many over recent years, comes with a
- 28:56Speaker 1: new type of scam. It was also kind of prizing
- 29:00Speaker 1: they use the actual name of the reporter as a
- 29:03Speaker 1: character in the story. They do that often with police,
- 29:06Speaker 1: but kind of different, but I understand why they did it.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I also enjoyed the Jack Web answering the listener questions segment,
- 29:18Speaker 1: and I don't think they did anymore, which is kind
- 29:21Speaker 1: of a shame, because it would be great to have
- 29:23Speaker 1: those around because sometimes there are unanswered questions or things
- 29:27Speaker 1: that we don't know about, or we just have to
- 29:30Speaker 1: kind of guests, and so it's great to have something
- 29:33Speaker 1: a bit more authoritative that you can sign to. All right,
- 29:37Speaker 1: listener comments and feedback. Now and we go to Spotify
- 29:41Speaker 1: and we have a couple of comments on The Big Sophomore.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Don Wright's Wow, this one had Johnny Dollar level sorrow.
- 29:50Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure people listening to the original would have
- 29:53Speaker 1: turned off the radio, turned to each other and said,
- 29:56Speaker 1: just happened. It would be interesting to figure out how
- 30:01Speaker 1: listeners reacted to this particular episode. It's not one of
- 30:05Speaker 1: the ones that's frequently talked about, but it is kind
- 30:09Speaker 1: of a pattern of drag now and you can see
- 30:12Speaker 1: it going into the nineteen sixties TV series as well,
- 30:16Speaker 1: of talking about issues that are generally not dealt with
- 30:20Speaker 1: or we're not generally dealt with at the time, particularly
- 30:24Speaker 1: when it comes to kids and their plot and so
- 30:28Speaker 1: calling to mind this sort of reality that could very
- 30:32Speaker 1: well have been going on in the listener's own communities.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I think it's a challenging thing and certainly some listeners
- 30:41Speaker 1: might not have quite known what to make of it.
- 30:44Speaker 1: And then Harrison wrote The Big Sophomore. Indeed, the things
- 30:48Speaker 1: he had to deal with and we'll have to deal
- 30:50Speaker 1: with psychologically for the rest of his life are herculean
- 30:55Speaker 1: for anyone to deal with, let alone a teenager. Very true, Harrison.
- 31:00Speaker 1: All right, well, now it's time to thank our Patreon
- 31:02Speaker 1: supporter of the day, and I want to go ahead
- 31:04Speaker 1: and think Todd Uh. Todd has been one of our
