- 1:37Yes. So Rico, today we are going to
- 1:40be reviewing a show called W Two Worlds and it's 2016 show.
- 1:49Do you want to give us the my drama?
- 1:50Listen abscess. Yes, I will go ahead and do
- 1:53that. It starts off with Osamu the
- 1:57father of a cardiothoracic. Attic surgeon.
- 2:02Oh youngjoo. That is the name mysteriously
- 2:06goes missing while writing the last chapter of his webtoon.
- 2:10W eun-joo goes to his office looking, but a hand from his
- 2:15monitor suddenly pulls her in and she finds herself on top on
- 2:20the rooftop of a building. Next to a man who is bloodied.
- 2:23She manages to save the person only to realize that he is.
- 2:27Kang Chul at that is I just want to make sure that I'm
- 2:31pronouncing it, right? He is the main character of his
- 2:34father of her father's webtoon. Yoonjoo later.
- 2:37Discovers she can only enter and leave the webtoon.
- 2:41Depending on Kang Joel's feelings, thanks for that Rico.
- 2:45That's basically episode 1 of w. It originally aired from July to
- 2:49September 2016. It is 16 episodes long and we do
- 2:54have some housekeeping to get out of the way.
- 2:56It was directed by Jung daehyun. He directed, Queen of reversals,
- 3:01the King, two hearts with ha jiwon and Lee seunggi.
- 3:04Those are two Hollywood stars right there, great show.
- 3:07If you haven't watched it already, he also directed by Don
- 3:10in the magistrate Cunning Single Lady.
- 3:12She was pretty with pox o June and, of course, I'm not a robot
- 3:16from 2017, it was written by seong Jae Joong, she wrote
- 3:20queening yawns men, which is amazing.
- 3:23If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend that 2012
- 3:26show and sung. Jae Joong, also wrote memories
- 3:29of the Alhambra from 2018. You can catch that show on
- 3:32Netflix if you want to watch it, although I watched it, it
- 3:36sucked. I did not like it at all.
- 3:39I actually I wrote a review on the Dybbuk blog as well if you
- 3:43want to see my raw thoughts on that show.
- 3:46Okay, so w Stars. Lee Jong Suk.
- 3:51As Kang jaecheol, this guy is very popular.
- 3:55Um, he's been in a bunch of shows, he started out.
- 3:59I feel His first real Cameo was in Secret Garden.
- 4:03I don't want to say Cameo. His first, real role was
- 4:05basically India garden and that's a major major show.
- 4:10I can hear your voice. 2013 Doctor, Stranger Pinocchio While
- 4:14You Were Sleeping romance is a bonus book.
- 4:16Is his most recent drama from 2019.
- 4:18Also on Netflix also sucks and then it also Stars Han hyo-joo
- 4:25as oh youngjoo she mostly does an even amount of like move.
- 4:29These and TV. And so she started acting when
- 4:33she was very young. And I remember her first from
- 4:38the TV show spring Waltz from 2006.
- 4:40And then she was also a brilliant Legacy in 2009 with a
- 4:43soggy and then donkey, which is a historical show from 2010.
- 4:48I really like her movie, Her movie work, she did this movie
- 4:53called always with, so jisub, which is like one of my first
- 4:57kdrama crushes was so jisub. I think he's like 40-something
- 5:00years old and I'm like, all in this movie with so jisub.
- 5:06It's a tearjerker. So good.
- 5:08Masquerade in 2012, love 911 in 2012, which is really funny.
- 5:14That's a rom-com. And then, the beauty inside from
- 5:162015, which has a very interesting premise, that they
- 5:20actually turned it into a TV show as well.
- 5:22So you could watch the Beauty inside movie, and then watch the
- 5:25Beauty inside kdrama as well. And to round out, our, I'll just
- 5:32go with her dad in the show Kim. We sung glaze also mu.
- 5:39Okay, so now that we have all of that out of the way, we have the
- 5:42cast with the directory of the writer release and everything we
- 5:45go. What did you think of w?
- 5:49So w has a very interesting premise that immediately made me
- 5:54think of the 1984 music video for ha ha ha Take On Me, right?
- 6:02Because it feels like it's the same exact thing.
- 6:05You're not wrong, gets pulled into the comic book.
- 6:08The comic book is its own world and things that happen on the
- 6:12outside world affect the comic and vice versa for sure.
- 6:17Interesting premise, like yes it is.
- 6:20So Leah rounding and that's why it did pretty well like in the
- 6:23ratings and stuff. It was it did gangbusters but
- 6:27that premise is so unique. And that's why I wonder how.
- 6:33I didn't like it. How they fumbled this.
- 6:39And this, in my view, this is something that I warned you
- 6:42about in the previous reviews that we've done in our
- 6:46conversations is that you might have a show that starts super
- 6:49strong. Like w starts very strong with a
- 6:52bang, right? It's a strong premise, strong
- 6:55premise really great characters. And you know somewhere along the
- 7:00way, they just lose their shit and like the threat of it is
- 7:04just gone. And so you didn't like w at all,
- 7:10pretty much know because I think that for the most part I was
- 7:16intrigued by the premise but as the show went on, it started to
- 7:21feel like it was spinning its Wheels because it felt like the
- 7:24story was dragging out too long and I don't know how you feel,
- 7:29but I did not really like either starring person.
- 7:35Oh, really. No, I honestly, you know what,
- 7:41it felt like to me. Okay.
- 7:42I'm just gonna withhold my thoughts.
- 7:44So you can keep going. You know what, it felt like to
- 7:46me especially Lee jung-soo. Okay.
- 7:51He felt Not believable as like that lead character because
- 7:58there's a lot of moments where he has to do action and he has
- 8:01to do, like, life-threatening stuff.
- 8:03Yes. And I did not find it believable
- 8:06at all because he looks so fresh face.
- 8:10So young. So model is Schleck.
- 8:14He was like they just he started late model, right?
- 8:17And so I think that's the problem.
- 8:19So it kind of reminded me when all these like freeform, CW
- 8:25shows, just grab like really good-looking young.
- 8:28People just are in like these dramas that they make, and you
- 8:33can tell that they don't quite have the acting there.
- 8:36And he did not quite have the acting there because there are
- 8:39moments where he's trying to deliver either a look or a line.
- 8:44And I'm just like, I'm not buying this at all, man.
- 8:48So, and then on top of that. Okay?
- 8:50What Han huge. Oh yeah, who plays?
- 8:53Oh, Yoon Joo. No.
- 8:56I'm not saying she is exactly like, the girl from Boys Over
- 9:01Flowers. She's not like that.
- 9:02All right, hold on, hold on, I'm not done.
- 9:04Okay, what I'm saying is that there's a lot of moments where
- 9:08I'm looking at her character or I'm watching.
- 9:11And I'm, I'm just like, I don't know if I even like what I'm
- 9:17seeing from her, you know, I'm saying.
- 9:19And it kind of got me to the point where I'm trudging through
- 9:23episodes to get Get to a payoff that in the end I didn't like or
- 9:31I didn't really care for uh-huh. And it kind of, It kind of had a
- 9:35problem with, you know, it's a great premise and they didn't
- 9:39know what to do with it. They didn't know how to do
- 9:41something very interesting or very fulfilling with it is what
- 9:46I'm, that's the problem. Okay.
- 9:48Okay, so my thoughts are, I will I have to take it back because I
- 9:53watch this witness originally aired.
- 9:56Okay? And I really enjoyed the first
- 10:01half of the show and to be quite honest, I remembered exactly the
- 10:06first eight episodes of the show in re-watching, it it was very
- 10:10clear to me. I was like, oh yeah, this
- 10:11happens. Oh yeah.
- 10:12They say this. Oh yeah, this person does this.
- 10:14So very memorable to me the first half of the show.
- 10:18And I would argue that the first eight episodes are the best
- 10:21Eight Episodes of the whole show.
- 10:23Um, and the feeling that I had while watching W originally back
- 10:28in 2016, was that I really like these characters.
- 10:33And I really love this premise. It is extremely unique.
- 10:39It is catchy. However, the way that they
- 10:45decided to take the plot and this, I felt originally Lee was
- 10:49bogus it was total bullshit. I felt like they didn't know how
- 10:52to end the show. Look the writers were grasping
- 10:54at straws that they, they just made it super convoluted because
- 10:59they seem to be writing week-to-week instead of feeling
- 11:03like they had this whole entire picture in mind for the show,
- 11:07and a clear-cut ending of where it was going to resolve.
- 11:13And in re watching it, I feel the exact same way that I did
- 11:17it. Like that scene where I wish so
- 11:21much better for these characters and for these actors and for
- 11:25this, you know, whole world that they built.
- 11:29I just want it to be better. And I wish that they had taken
- 11:34it in such a different direction and I don't know what that
- 11:36direction should be, but it was, it's not this.
- 11:41No, it's not what we got. So yeah, it's kind of hard to
- 11:45say, you know, it should have gone in this direction when we
- 11:48don't know, Know what it should have been but we both know it's
- 11:51not this. Yes.
- 11:52You know what? It kind of reminds me of it
- 11:54reminds me of another show that I watch back in the early 2000s
- 12:00or 2010's called Flash Forward. It was with a Joseph Fiennes Ray
- 12:07Fiennes brother and John Cho like it had like some good
- 12:13people on it but basically the premise of the show is that
- 12:17basically A series revolves around the lives of several
- 12:21people as a mysterious event causes nearly everyone on the
- 12:25planet to simultaneously lose Consciousness for 2 minutes and
- 12:2917 seconds. How does that remind you of?
- 12:32Wa. Hold on.
- 12:33No, no. The reason why is because it
- 12:35starts off with a very interesting premise.
- 12:38Like, wait a minute. Everybody on Earth.
- 12:41I blacked out for like this exact specific time and then
- 12:45there's the mystery of solving. Why that Happened.
- 12:48And so the first half of the first season is like, oh, this
- 12:53is really cool. This is like a very interesting
- 12:55like mystery and stuff. But once they get to the point
- 12:57where they kind of like almost figure it out and then what is
- 13:01the next step? Yes, the writers you could tell,
- 13:04did not know what the next step was, right.
- 13:06And the show got cancelled after one season because they couldn't
- 13:11figure out what to do. It was, it was very frustrating
- 13:15to watch. So that's how he felt.
- 13:17And then this That's how I felt. Especially after episode a, I
- 13:20was like, like, why they're fumbling it, they're messing it
- 13:24up. You know, in this case, what I
- 13:27was watching at this time around, I was able to pinpoint,
- 13:29what exactly reminded me of. So you said I show
- 13:31flash-forward. It's a me reminded me.
- 13:34A lot of like Tron legacy because of them getting sucked
- 13:38into the game. Where the world's?
- 13:40Yeah, my name me a Truman Show a lot because, okay, characters
- 13:44affected by peopl creators acting as God and not.
- 13:48Allowing him to make choices about his own life.
- 13:51And so that's very prevalent in Truman Show and of that's
- 13:53running throughout W, it reminded me of the Matrix
- 13:57because they end up being able to enter and exit, the alt this
- 14:02alternate fake World, exact vitamin E of inception a lot
- 14:06because the creators are Architects.
- 14:08Can manipulate the physical world and copy something from
- 14:12the real world that ends up having an interesting parallel
- 14:16world implications. Right.
- 14:19It reminded me of Pleasantville, the movie Pleasantville and
- 14:22getting sucked into the world again.
- 14:24And then the inhabitants of this world start to unravel the truth
- 14:28about their world and their existence the same thing as W.
- 14:32And then this is a little bit of a pool, but I thought of Jordan
- 14:36peels us. Okay, because in this might be
- 14:41getting into spoiler territory. So I'll just stop right here.
- 14:44But basically, I'll cover, why Jordan Peele?
- 14:46Sus reminds me of w, Howe were there.
- 14:50Any parts of the show that you were really excited for or you
- 14:54were like, oh, I can't wait till we get to this again.
- 14:57So I think the the most interesting thing, obviously it
- 15:02happens early on, it's when we see for the first time that she
- 15:06gets pulled into the comic world.
- 15:09But it's an alternate reality. So I found that interesting
- 15:13like, oh, so she is affecting what's happening in the comic.
- 15:17Hmm. But then I did not expect for
- 15:21it. The reverse to happen pretty
- 15:23much where like the other side of the world is affecting this
- 15:26as well. I did not expect that, so that
- 15:30was really cool. So when that happened the very
- 15:32first time in the show, I was like, oh this is, this is a
- 15:37really cool concept. Concept.
- 15:38Like let's really play around with this to see what more can
- 15:44the outside world affect? What's going on in there?
- 15:47Yeah, really play with that idea and they do for the first few
- 15:50episodes, and I really enjoyed that, and then for some reason,
- 15:54they kind of like tail off and they decide to reverse it.
- 16:00No, I'm not trying to sound like Missy Elliott here but like they
- 16:06decide for our lead character to come out of the comic.
- 16:11Pretty much. Yeah.
- 16:13And for some reason, I'm not getting get into spoiler
- 16:17territory here, but basically, they decide to do something with
- 16:20the character that now, that characters, not around for a
- 16:24couple of episodes and it's like, or for like an episode or
- 16:27whatever. And then they immediately
- 16:29Backtrack on that. And it's like, so what are the
- 16:32rules of the world? Like, yes, that is a big
- 16:34complaint that I have is that they set up these rules hard and
- 16:38fast rules about this world and then they just break all of them
- 16:41by the end of the show or it starts changing and they call it
- 16:45like, oh, with all things being the same, this should happen and
- 16:50that's like guessing what should happen in the in the comic book
- 16:54world and then they introduced variables and the characters
- 16:58even Then call them variables and they're like, unless a
- 17:00variable pops up and I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 17:03That is pretty lame. Like, what variable label it
- 17:06that way. Yeah, so that was very
- 17:09frustrating for me. The most exciting part of the
- 17:11show was definitely the romance between control and oh my god,
- 17:17oh, you'll do right? And to me that's what made it so
- 17:22compelling. Is that they somehow have this
- 17:24really good. Chemistry.
- 17:25And they're trying to turn the tables on the Run of the show of
- 17:30the, you know, comic book the Muslim comic book.
- 17:32Yeah. And I'm not going to give
- 17:36anything away but like their moments together are really good
- 17:39and so whenever it kind of got towards that territory or
- 17:42whenever they were together, or they were having some sweet
- 17:45moment. I was like, yes, like this feels
- 17:48right for the show and then it would double back on itself and
- 17:52it would commit more towards the mystery, the logistics of the
- 17:57world. Being to flipped upside down and
- 18:01the criminal aspect of the show. And it was just that part.
- 18:07They didn't seem to have as down as like, these characters are
- 18:12should end up together. Like that's like the through
- 18:14line that they committed to from the very beginning from the very
- 18:18writing and you skid a sense of that with the really solid
- 18:23relationship between them throughout the whole show.
- 18:27And so that's how I found Not a positive that being said I don't
- 18:31like that. They're trying to switch genres
- 18:34in the middle of a show you know?
- 18:36Thank you. I don't like that.
- 18:39Yeah like not only during the show they're switching genres
- 18:43but also the tone of the show will change.
- 18:47Yes. Like within scenes.
- 18:48Yes. You know there's a moment where
- 18:51somebody is like brutally shot, you know and there's blood and
- 18:55everything and the very next scene it's like Comical with
- 18:59like this light-hearted music and it's like, what?
- 19:02It's kind of hard to keep us. You know, a straightforward
- 19:06line. W stands for whiplash.
- 19:08Exactly, exactly. Yeah, it's kind of hard to keep
- 19:12track of what is the show supposed to make us as an
- 19:16audience want to follow? When it's constantly bouncing
- 19:19back and forth. Yeah I feel like we discussed
- 19:23what really irked us about the show already and what we really
- 19:25dislike about the show but we can go more into spoilers later.
- 19:28On a scale of one to five. How pissed would you be if you
- 19:30were a fan of this web toon in this world?
- 19:33If I was a fan of the webtoon itself, pretty upset because at
- 19:39the end of the day, you usually read, you know, these Comics
- 19:43written for the hero and you know if your hero is going to be
- 19:47killed off, like that's upsetting enough.
- 19:51Uh-huh. But then the way like like
- 19:55sometimes I even lost track of how it actually is.
- 19:58Ends because they keep, like, going back and, like, know, we
- 20:01know that we can change something and it's like, Okay
- 20:05now, what's happening? Because they keep going back and
- 20:09doubling back on themselves. That was a problem.
- 20:11They didn't have a clear ending and just when you think you got
- 20:14the ending of the webtoon. No, they change it again, right?
- 20:17So so it was a frustrating pressure, so 50 God.
- 20:25Me personally, I don't know if I would be as committed.
- 20:28Did to a webtoon. That is, this genre know, it's
- 20:34like a crime. Thriller action.
- 20:37Come on. I don't mind that if they decide
- 20:41to lean one way or the other, it would make a lot more sense and
- 20:46it would be more of a continuous and actual believable story if
- 20:53they commit to one rather than, you know, trying to straddle
- 20:57both lines. Or even doing 7525.
- 21:01In either direction, would probably make more sense like
- 21:06having like an action thriller where there is a romantic
- 21:09subplot, you know, would work or it's a romantic, you know, story
- 21:15with this element of, you know, sci-fi or however you want to
- 21:20label it, but this is very herky-jerky wishy-washy.
- 21:29Unclear the glue yeah. What direction they want to go
- 21:32in? Was there a character that you
- 21:35were that you really connected with or where most invested in?
- 21:39At any time? It was kind of hard to like
- 21:42truly invest because I wasn't invested in the two main
- 21:45characters, so that that made it hard to and there's this is very
- 21:50like there's not a lot of cash to go with.
- 21:51No, it's a very light cast. Yeah.
- 21:54So you know who you're looking at from pretty much episode 1.
- 21:59That's pretty much it. Yeah, Way Forward.
- 22:01Yeah. So if, if I had to put it on
- 22:04someone, maybe the dad, Who's the artist really?
- 22:09I because he is an artist who is struggling like he has, you
- 22:14know, an idea for what he wants to do with his tune, but the
- 22:17world is of being affected. So everything that he does, he
- 22:21is getting boarded. He's getting thwarted from his
- 22:25vision, you know. So I Related to that.
- 22:29Yeah, I sympathize with us or empathize sympathize.
- 22:33I've been in situations where I've tried to create and I've
- 22:37been through it myself so I can sympathize and empathize with
- 22:41the dad, okay, with the dad. I know all characters.
- 22:44I feel like I really connected with oil and Jew because she is
- 22:49like the every girl, like she's not a very good doctor, no, it's
- 22:53pretty average. The only thing she has going for
- 22:56is her looks when she's not. 100 on either she's like I'm a
- 23:00beauty like she's like very surprised that people find her
- 23:04attractive so that's God but I really like how she is a
- 23:13dreamer. Almost.
- 23:15Hmm. And it's very slight that you
- 23:18get this impression that she is kind of like a hopeless romantic
- 23:21because she's so realistic. Of a personality like she's
- 23:26like, you know, she feels like a real character.
- 23:30Yes, she felt real in that sense where she wasn't Like, I don't
- 23:38know, she came from a divorcee family, she's living with her
- 23:42mom, and she doesn't get her. See her dad all the time, and
- 23:46she's pretty, you know, at work, she's not very popular and she
- 23:50has to like kowtow to her boss and stuff like that, that really
- 23:56kind of felt not non main character to me, right?
- 24:01So, I I liked her a lot in that sense and her reactions felt
- 24:06really genuine to me. I know you Did not like her
- 24:08acting denile his then that like case, he's acting as well, I'll
- 24:12call him Casey for cocktail. So I don't think you had any
- 24:16thoughts on chemistry because you already said you just didn't
- 24:19believe them. No, like it.
- 24:23There's one scene in particular that I'm just like, what the
- 24:26hell are they doing? Like it just didn't feel natural
- 24:30eye. It didn't feel.
- 24:32And we'll talk about it in spoilers if you want.
- 24:34Yeah, but yeah, like I was not so Old under Love Story.
- 24:38Okay? So talk about this in spoilers.
- 24:41Last thing before we get into spoilers OST, what do you think
- 24:44of those tea? I thought it was fine.
- 24:47I have a hard time gate. Oh you know what I did have one
- 24:50particular note though there were certain action moments that
- 24:54had the same theme that started out a certain way and like
- 24:59you'll recognize it if I do it it's like don't go
- 25:01doo-doo-doo-doo doo-doo-doo-doo. Oh yeah.
- 25:05That is the very beginning of Danny.
- 25:08Elfman's version of Avengers from Avengers Age of Ultron.
- 25:12If you listen to it, it's the same exact starting your here.
- 25:19And you'll be like, oh my God, they rip them off the top.
- 25:23Danny Elfman your that very that beginning part?
- 25:25Yay. All right.
- 25:26Clearly. Wow, fine.
- 25:29So I found the OST, amazing. I thought it was unassailably
- 25:33good. I see, okay?
- 25:36I really enjoy that osce even to this day and I remember the
- 25:39first episode ending for my re-watch, I was like, oh shit.
- 25:45Fuck I forgot. Like how good the OST is on it.
- 25:48The centerpiece is this song, Where Are You by Jung joon-young
- 25:52and that was like, the, like breathy, like, song that they
- 26:00put at the end of every episode, every episode.
- 26:02Yeah, loved it. It's in my cage.
- 26:05I'm OSD Spotify playlist. I think that I was T, slaps.
- 26:12So we'll talk about major themes, more, qualms and
- 26:16nitpicks, and weak links. And we're just going to pick it
- 26:19apart in spoilers, right after this.
- 26:29You want to come in. All right, so we're going to
- 26:31talk about spoilers now. Rico, I want to come back to
- 26:34Ooh, this thing that you said you were talking about the
- 26:37Chemistry Between the leaves and you were like, there is this
- 26:40moment that I did not like, I thought they were stretching?
- 26:44Yes. Well, is that mode?
- 26:46Okay, so there's a moment, I can't remember exactly which
- 26:49episode, but it's kind of early on.
- 26:52There is a moment where they are in his apartment or his like
- 26:59sweet and like his friends are outside of the room and he has a
- 27:03gun. And he is trying to get answers
- 27:07right to what is going on, but there's clearly supposed to be
- 27:13like some type of, you know, something going on between them,
- 27:17some type of chemistry. Okay, yeah.
- 27:19You're supposed to try to believe that he is obviously
- 27:24trying to get answers but he trying to get to know her.
- 27:28Oh the bathroom scene bathroom. Yeah, it was the bathroom.
- 27:31It was about to shoot sir and he shoots her.
- 27:35But that's not that's not my qualms my qualms is not with the
- 27:38fact that he shoots her. Okay.
- 27:40What's the koala might calm is that I didn't find any of like
- 27:44their interaction as a believable thing that these two
- 27:48are going to end up together. Okay you didn't think they were
- 27:52going to end up together, it didn't feel like it.
- 27:55Like I know that the show and you know, they're trying to
- 27:58Telegraph that these two are going to end up together and
- 28:00every interaction happens to be them together and they're saving
- 28:04each. They're from different
- 28:05situations. But man did like their actual
- 28:09chemistry never had me, you know, really sold on the fact
- 28:16that all ya know, I could totally see them together.
- 28:18Okay, like so just never felt that way.
- 28:20Here's my thing is that in my second watch, I was looking for
- 28:24places where they seem to really connect and have great
- 28:28chemistry, their main queue, and all that stuff.
- 28:31And I still feel that The reason why I think they have great
- 28:37chemistry is not because they have great chemistry.
- 28:40It's because they're just too beautiful people caught up in
- 28:42this like Grand Story together and they are smushed together.
- 28:46Every chance that the story allows and they don't have like
- 28:51a moment where you're like oh that's when he fell in love with
- 28:53her. Oh, that's when she fell in love
- 28:55with him. And you know what I'm saying?
- 28:57There's always a moment were like that's it.
- 28:59Like they might hate each other or they might, you know, have no
- 29:03issues with each other. But That's the moment where you
- 29:07find that they're committed to each other for some reason or
- 29:10another and there was no, like, like moment in time where you're
- 29:15like, oh, I understand their commitment to each other, right?
- 29:21You know, he's she saves him at the very beginning from dying
- 29:23and you have a thought. It reminds me the premise is not
- 29:31the same but having two actors. Good looking actors that are
- 29:36pressed together and they're supposed to be a romantic
- 29:38interest in a movie and it just does not work as much as the
- 29:43plot is driving them to write. And that is there was a movie
- 29:47it's with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl.
- 29:52We're killers are believe or something like that.
- 29:55Where like somehow Ashton Kutcher's like some secrets.
- 29:57Bye. But the two of them good-looking
- 30:01people and the plot is forcing them together and like the plot
- 30:05is trying to make you believe like yeah these two are going to
- 30:08end up together because everything they do makes them
- 30:12you know romantically involved but you just don't buy it
- 30:15because those two together, it's like you're watching them on
- 30:18screen is like there's nothing there.
- 30:22I don't I do and I don't feel that way about this coupling of
- 30:27case. And you don't do the beginning
- 30:32where she saves him. She plunges like a pen into his
- 30:35chest and he like comes to comes like, they're like into motion.
- 30:41Just love option. He like lifts his body up and
- 30:44they're face-to-face. Really close to each other and
- 30:48I'm like, is that the moment they expect us to be like, oh
- 30:51yeah, they're going to try and like, do anything possible to be
- 30:55with this person moment. That's good.
- 30:57You're just like, oh my God, it's so abrupt and aggressive
- 31:01and like high stakes and there's no words exchanged between them.
- 31:06Like it's just this Visual and I think the the whole thing about
- 31:11this is like they're going for the visuals versus the substance
- 31:15of a real relationship where you have conversations and you have
- 31:20these moments of getting to know one another like he doesn't even
- 31:24know her really. And so if you guys like they're
- 31:27just Moving from set piece to set piece because the the show
- 31:31still has to go about its business, about being about a
- 31:35webtoon and the world being affected.
- 31:37So, it kind of feels like they're just moving from set
- 31:40pieces set piece, is that of having genuine interactions with
- 31:44each other. It hadn't made no sense to me
- 31:46why he was like after he comes to and he's in the hospital and
- 31:49his people are surrounding and he's like, find this girl, I
- 31:52believe she's the key to my life, she can help me find the
- 31:55reason for my existence and I'm like Why do you feel that way?
- 31:59Where did you get that? So, in my mind, I was like, that
- 32:03doesn't make any sense and, like logged it away, and it really,
- 32:07that's the reason the impetus for him, even summoning her to
- 32:11the world is that he's like, she has some kind of key.
- 32:14She's some sort of, she has the answers that I'm looking for and
- 32:21like it does not make any lick of sense.
- 32:24It does not know. I agree.
- 32:26No. So we were talking about the dad
- 32:29very briefly because you're connected with, you know, the
- 32:34dad in this at least a little bit.
- 32:36I found the first few episodes with the dad really upsetting
- 32:40for me because he is sadistic Glee happy while killing off
- 32:44Casey and his assistant was like, oh yeah, your dad.
- 32:49So sick and tired of drawing the same character for like almost a
- 32:52decade. You wanted to kill him off.
- 32:54Every fiber of his being and I was like, that's a lot.
- 32:59Like that's a lot to hand. Like that's your paycheck.
- 33:02Is this character, you know? Yes.
- 33:06And there were no complaints from the fans saying oh we want
- 33:10to end o. The quality is going down.
- 33:12Oh all this stuff like no it was just the dad.
- 33:15Having this idea that he is creation is a monster.
- 33:21And I'd rather be eaten. So I'd rather eat than be eaten
- 33:25or whatever, the the quote was on the back of that the
- 33:29postcard, or whatever. So, it is really a bizarre intro
- 33:36for the Dead It is passing judgment on his own creation, as
- 33:41a God, you know, how could I leave him as he is about to be
- 33:45consumed? Like why does the dad feel he's
- 33:48going to be consumed if it's like either it's him or me but
- 33:52why? You know, either slowly, get
- 33:55those flashbacks of like, when cangzhou, like really started
- 33:59rebelling against his vision, the Creator's vision for the
- 34:02story, these were very micro aggressions, you know, yes, the
- 34:08holes trajectory of the story changed but it wasn't like there
- 34:12was a threat to the Creator at any point.
- 34:15No. So that wasn't, so that was very
- 34:18confusing for me. So I think maybe this is just
- 34:23like putting Like my fake Psychiatry hat or something,
- 34:27okay, but there are times where I think a lot of people who have
- 34:32created something eventually, get tired of having to
- 34:39continuously, do the same thing for that creation, instead of
- 34:43being able to innovate and create new things.
- 34:46You get this a lot with with people who write music and then
- 34:52have to perform the same. A song over and over and it's
- 34:55not even sometimes like their greatest creation.
- 34:59Sometimes it's like something that they came up with, that was
- 35:01just good enough and then it just took off and like the fan
- 35:06response for the webtoon, you know, people love the character
- 35:09and this and that but the creators like shit, this is not
- 35:14all that I want to do in my life.
- 35:15There's other things or other creations.
- 35:18I want to dive into so I can understand him wanting to be
- 35:23like, okay. I'm kind of done with that.
- 35:25Now I want to move past that I think it's lengthy TV actors.
- 35:29Yeah II totally understand the idea of wanting to quit this
- 35:36really monotonous life, right? Creating the same thing over and
- 35:41over again and it's not even what you consider your best
- 35:44work. Obviously, I don't completely
- 35:45understand that. I understand the concept of
- 35:50characters especially in literature feeling like they
- 35:54have a lot of agency over their own stories and then the Creator
- 35:58or the rider is just the mouthpiece.
- 36:01And they're like, well she wants to go on an adventure so I had
- 36:04to write another book like things they say.
- 36:06Shit like that like writers are constantly like yeah well I
- 36:10didn't think that she should have gotten with this guy but
- 36:13you know, it was her decision and you're like if you created
- 36:17the character you're the one writing.
- 36:20And what is this, you're the one that decided or decides.
- 36:24Yeah there's other ones not so the other way around and that
- 36:27respect, I totally understand where the show was going when it
- 36:32had this really interesting relationship between Casey and
- 36:36the Creator, the dad. But the reason and I'll get to
- 36:42this. Now why I thought Jordan peels
- 36:44us was a big reminder for me, is that the villain ends up being
- 36:50in control of the Creator. And they end up Eating these
- 36:54Twisted Twins. Doppelgangers, one is a shadow
- 36:58puppet. Correct.
- 37:01And that reminded me a lot of Jordan people's us.
- 37:03We're like the people from underneath are at the mercy of
- 37:08their doppelganger up above living their life as if nothing
- 37:11is happening. So, that was was a really
- 37:17interesting concept and again, the show is just so interesting
- 37:21to think about and Ponder the execution of these Twisted
- 37:26Twins. Do we want to talk about it?
- 37:27Because that is a major spoiler for the show and how Yeah, where
- 37:33it ends up being that the villains of the show, take over
- 37:35the world and become essentially, the main characters
- 37:39of the show and the anonymous faceless villain that killed,
- 37:46Casey's whole entire family or family had no face to begin
- 37:51with. And I understand that from like
- 37:53a writer's creators perspective that you just wanted a device,
- 37:58right? To a amp up the story and give
- 38:01the hero a reason to become a hero and go on this, hero's
- 38:05journey. But the problem with that
- 38:07particular device is that you be you make it into a mystery now,
- 38:12right? Like you made the whole mystery,
- 38:15the KC in the man wants started like the TV show.
- 38:20W to figure out like who killed his whole family and frame them
- 38:24for it, right? Because something about
- 38:27storytelling is you cannot introduce Something engines
- 38:31story unless there is going to be a resolution or pay off AKA
- 38:36chekov's gun. That is like the number one like
- 38:40reference for people. And if you don't know what that
- 38:43means, chekhov's gun is a story by check off.
- 38:48He wrote that. If there is a gun that is shown
- 38:53or placed in a story. In the First Act, it has to be
- 38:57fired by the third act. So that means that if Something
- 39:00is placed in the story. It has to have a purpose in a
- 39:03resolution by the end. So, putting in that device
- 39:07there, like a faceless man, like, who was the initial, you
- 39:12know, response or basically, the reason why everything starts
- 39:16going, well, he's not going to be faceless by the end, right?
- 39:19He shouldn't be Faceless Men, shouldn't be.
- 39:21So, you know, if if him, as a writer is like going in there
- 39:25and be like, well, no, he's just a catalyst for getting
- 39:27everything started know, people are going to be like know who is
- 39:29that? Who Who is the man we need to
- 39:32know. So so for the fact that that I
- 39:37understand it but at the same time I'm like that's stupid as
- 39:39shit. Yes.
- 39:41So the rest of the how he resolves this issue to, you know
- 39:46if Casey is trapped by his own predetermined you know set
- 39:51course and because of the way that he was designed, he's
- 39:55always going to be looking for this killer and will not have
- 39:59peace. Until he finds this killer.
- 40:01Then give him a face. Give them an identity so that I
- 40:04can find him in the world. That was Casey's whole thing.
- 40:06When He confronted the dad Creator, the dad creator gives
- 40:11the Assassin, his own face rights and in turn the villain
- 40:20the serial killer. If you will Steals the Dad's
- 40:26face and the dad goes, maybe, I don't know, six seven episodes,
- 40:30wooden no face. The killer steals his face.
- 40:37I found that so gruesome. I completely forgot.
- 40:41Again, I've only remember the first Eight Episodes.
- 40:43So when this happened and the assistant, his Apprentice find
- 40:47some faceless. I freak the hell out.
- 40:51It's like, oh my God. That's right.
- 40:55What are you shaking your head? No, I'm just saying.
- 40:58Like, like it's dumb. Like it's dumb.
- 41:04Like no lie. It's Like dumbest shit.
- 41:07It really is like they thought about you know, something like
- 41:11face off or you know like or even Buffalo Bill from like
- 41:15Silence of the Lambs like, huh. Someone face and wearing their
- 41:19faces a good. That's not great idea by episode
- 41:2310, you have this like villain saying things like you are me
- 41:26and I am you and like, it's a weird curse or just a
- 41:30declaration that they're linked because they have the same face.
- 41:36You know, the villain has his own Awakening / Rebellion
- 41:41against the Creator. And now that the villain is in
- 41:44control of the world, through the Creator.
- 41:47Like it was completely reminded me of us with the tables, get
- 41:50turned in that same, right? And you have the, you know, the
- 41:54doppelganger is From Below or the other way around.
- 41:58But anyway, like the ones below are the ones that come up to
- 42:01like make themselves revealed and known and yeah, have their
- 42:04own agency. So yeah, that was really tough
- 42:10for me. And then the dad just can't
- 42:13really out paste the villain and his desires, even once the
- 42:18villain gets killed. Like, yes, he gets his face
- 42:21back, but now he gets all the villains memories and it's like
- 42:24weird. Like what it?
- 42:26Where's that written? That no rules.
- 42:28There's no rule to a thank-you. They'll rats.
- 42:31That was my biggest thing. Like, I understand, if the world
- 42:35can be affected by everything that he's doing outside of the
- 42:38world, but like, for memories to be inserted, and like, you know,
- 42:44like you like physical consequences didn't really make
- 42:48sense, because the rules weren't well, Established mmm-hmm, I
- 42:54didn't like how everyone started being able to summon these
- 42:57portals to get around God, that pissed me off.
- 43:01Like I was like going. So anyone could do this, right?
- 43:05Yeah. Anyone who had anything can make
- 43:07some in like a weapon and if any, they can just like maybe
- 43:11not summon it but like there is a Creator on the other end
- 43:14that's like doing it for know but like it basically was
- 43:17summoning because Lee Zhang's Sir.
- 43:20Casey, like I one point in the later episodes I think it was
- 43:24episode 15, he's in handcuffs and this sucker not only imagine
- 43:30the handcuffs off like he like imagines a key to take off the
- 43:34handcuffs and then imagines a gun materializing out of nowhere
- 43:38and so no he didn't know that. That was the dad that was that
- 43:42you're right. So slow like here I'll that one.
- 43:45Was it again if this we had record this a week later I
- 43:49wouldn't I would have totally forgotten.
- 43:50This. But what happened was he was in
- 43:52the game for a year because it's the final episode.
- 43:54He can't teleport out back into the real world too because it's
- 43:59making him live it out in the game up in the McCormick.
- 44:02I keep thinking he's making them live out the door.
- 44:05The world construct is making him live it out, so he lived a
- 44:09year in jail and just when they, when he thought it was all all
- 44:13over the dad, who was also stuck in the game for a year?
- 44:19Got out of his mental institution by killing a nurse,
- 44:22and went to the secret hideout, where he hid another copy of
- 44:26the. What's it called?
- 44:31It's the tablet, normal tablet. And then he started drawing
- 44:34should in to loot the world. And so, he drew him out of the
- 44:37cat handcuffs, gave him a gun, helped him Escape drama car, and
- 44:43then let him to where he was in this, you know, it looked just
- 44:48like the house in real life, but it was a safe house in the
- 44:52world, right? So again, like it still doesn't
- 44:57make a ton of sense. Like, why, why was the Dead?
- 45:00Dad and cangzhou like stuck in the game for a year.
- 45:05And in the rebels makes two months, it was like that doesn't
- 45:09make sense. I, there's a lot, there's so
- 45:12much. They bring, they bring home grow
- 45:14back to back to life, Jung Joo. She dies in the money.
- 45:18She dies. My favorite part.
- 45:21My favorite part was when they were like oh we performed CPR on
- 45:24her for over 30 minutes and it's not looking very good.
- 45:27She's kind of brain dead. And I was like you performed CPR
- 45:31on her for over 30 minutes like what did you expect?
- 45:35Did you continue doing CPR? For 30 minutes?
- 45:37I thought it's like, there must be a cut-off, like, if they're
- 45:39doing CPR. Hell after I never have, you're
- 45:41just like, yeah, like Scott. Let's call him.
- 45:46So I thought that was just ridiculous as well.
- 45:51Like I said, the the cloning of the tablet in and out of the
- 45:56game, the world was such a cop-out, it really was because
- 46:03then anything can Be changed at any given time.
- 46:06And that doesn't really make for a fun device, like it opens up
- 46:11the world to whatever you want it to be, but it breaks the
- 46:15rules of the story and that's no fun because then any kin thing
- 46:21can happen. And then you're just like well
- 46:23Arthur Stakes are the stakes real enough where characters are
- 46:29actually in danger, right? And so that, that's the problem
- 46:34with something like Yeah, I think that the most interesting
- 46:39part of the story was that they were constantly testing the
- 46:43waters and trying to get characters to go against their
- 46:47nature and find their own agency outside of the Creator's wishes
- 46:51and outside of the Creator's Vision, which is what Casey was
- 46:54trying to do the whole time. But Zoe his assistant in the
- 47:00world, she also was like on the verge of Disappearing because
- 47:06she outlived her purpose within the game started disappearing.
- 47:10You know, that whole thing and at the end, her the same thing
- 47:15happens, where she like, outlives her purpose, she gets
- 47:17fired, she moves on, and that's the difference is that she
- 47:21manages to start a life beyond her predetermined fate.
- 47:25And I think that was really profound, especially, for a
- 47:29female characters. Do it first, yes.
- 47:32And for her to be like, yeah, I was overseas.
- 47:34These what's going on with Casey like it was like very much.
- 47:39I'm nice resolution for that character.
- 47:42She actually had an arc to her, you know, all of the other
- 47:46characters like Casey and young Soo would jeonju, they don't
- 47:50really have an arc. They are the same as when these
- 47:54are the same they don't really change.
- 47:57No they don't, they don't change which kind of sucks.
- 48:00As I feel its characters that you're watching.
- 48:02The only characters that do change our like the Creator
- 48:05character. He has a really, really crazy
- 48:08Arc and so and so we as well. She changes by the end, you're
- 48:13right. Yeah.
- 48:14It's very independent and has her own thing and she doesn't
- 48:17need Casey to live in this world that that's a big problem with
- 48:21characters. There's something you'll notice
- 48:24here in American TV shows that will happen with you.
- 48:29See it a lot on comedies especially where characters they
- 48:35have minimal growth early on in the show and then they just stop
- 48:40changing and then the writers just keep writing the same story
- 48:44and jokes over and over for that character and the character
- 48:47doesn't change anymore, right? And so that's when shows be
- 48:50start to become stale. You don't have anything
- 48:53interesting to do with the character and the character Arc
- 48:57and that's probably why I liked the first Eight Episodes is that
- 49:00it felt the most cohesive, and you had the story.
- 49:03Constantly, surprising them and pushing them into really
- 49:08precarious situations. And after that, you can't just
- 49:12get away with that for the rest of the show.
- 49:14Like, no, they just, that's what they did.
- 49:15They tried to still keep with that formula, but at the halfway
- 49:19point, you should start to see some growth in the characters.
- 49:22And you should definitely start to see some character arcs and
- 49:25we were not getting that for as our main two people especially
- 49:30with a show that only last 16 episodes because this is not an
- 49:34American show. This is not something that's
- 49:36going to go on for Seasons, right?
- 49:38So you have to make sure that you establish an arc that is
- 49:43different enough from the beginning point.
- 49:45If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work.
- 49:47And then you you stall out on a character and that that is never
- 49:51good. So, did you have any nitpicks
- 49:54about the show? I think I'm labeled down a lot
- 50:00of the things that I didn't like.
- 50:01So I don't know if I would say, nitpicks, as much as just issues
- 50:05with the show. Okay.
- 50:06Because Niblick nitpicks would more imply that I like the show.
- 50:12But here's a little thing that maybe I didn't like or whatever,
- 50:16so I have no fixed. Maybe sometimes will trigger
- 50:19some of yours in the back of your mind.
- 50:21So the in the episode for Casey says, As in his world.
- 50:27What do I do? If I got what do I become?
- 50:29If I get stabbed by a woman because the reporters are
- 50:33insinuating. That Jung Joo is the one that
- 50:36stabbed him is like the person that nearly killed him, even
- 50:40though it's not true, there's no evidence all this stuff.
- 50:43And he says this like what would become if I get stopped by a
- 50:46woman which is a misogynistic statement.
- 50:49Yeah. But that really leans into how
- 50:53women are viewed. Like, she's not You know someone
- 50:57who's not a threat right ABS me like what a what does that make
- 51:01me? I'm like right that it's all
- 51:03about insinuating about their manhood and stuff like that but
- 51:06yeah I didn't like that there was too much lip nose and Chin
- 51:10quivering from KC too much. Yeah, this is not an epic but it
- 51:18goes. I think in this category, the
- 51:20scene of yeongju getting sucked back into the comic and
- 51:25underwater. Water.
- 51:27Was so that was so cool. They must have flooded the set
- 51:30or something because she's like on the phone talking to somebody
- 51:34and then all of a sudden she can't hear them and then like
- 51:36boom she's like in the water. Yeah they were surprising some
- 51:40tub thing that would like CGI or not even see chime maybe it was
- 51:44different thing but yeah, that was pretty cool.
- 51:46I don't think they covered in this is an epic.
- 51:48Why was she such a great artist? Like all of a sudden, the
- 51:55assistant, The Apprentice is Oh, I heard this thing.
- 51:58Once said, your dad took the concept for Casey from you and
- 52:03your drawings, from when you were a teenager like you
- 52:05basically thought him up and he's your creation.
- 52:09So you're also like a Creator. God.
- 52:12And then she's like, what? And like immediately is amazing
- 52:15at drawing. So my question was, I'm trying
- 52:19to remember what episode that this happening.
- 52:21Do you remember this episode 70? That is too late to be
- 52:25introducing that. An introduction to that we're
- 52:30like, you know, she was also in the whole Artistry should have
- 52:34been in the first two episodes, episode 7.
- 52:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:39She was like, what kind of feels like they forgot.
- 52:42Like they, you know, we need a way for her to be able to draw
- 52:46to hmm, and they didn't think of it early enough and they were
- 52:50like, oh, what if we make it that Casey was like, her dream
- 52:54guy. She was the one that he was.
- 52:57And that created it like you couldn't tell us that an episode
- 53:00to like that. That's the better place to it
- 53:03have that. But or just have her at least be
- 53:06doodling or something in her off time and she's very good cute.
- 53:09Yeah show us show us, don't tell us.
- 53:12So anyway that was really annoying.
- 53:15There were so many shopping sprees.
- 53:16That is a very kdrama thing to do.
- 53:19It's dead. Take the main girls.
- 53:20Those are the moments. I was just like, okay, let's
- 53:23make it was too much like too much about Of a thing.
- 53:29There was a scene in episode 7 where she is asleep and she
- 53:33falls out of bed. While she's sleeping, she's
- 53:35fully dressed and the outfit looks like Dorothy from Wizard
- 53:39of Oz, but all the lights are on and it's bright as hell in the
- 53:45room. And I'm like, how the hell was
- 53:49she asleep? When it looks like noon out in
- 53:52this room. It's just really stupid.
- 53:57The dad took an 18 hour flight to New Zealand and flew.
- 53:59Coach get out. Get out of here bro.
- 54:03You should have been a first-class should have had
- 54:06champagne. Like he was a famous cartoonist.
- 54:11Definitely had them royalties coming in had his own production
- 54:15house like no he was not like oldest easily been flying at
- 54:19least business class. Yeah so that was very annoying.
- 54:25Did you like When she brought the comic into the world and
- 54:29that's how Casey realize that he's in a comic a second time.
- 54:38It's like, oh my God. I feel like Then it's just
- 54:47breaking too much of the of the world.
- 54:50You know, like Casey summons the killer into the real world by
- 54:56thinking about him, bro. Nah like summoning, the kill it.
- 55:00No man seemed like all of that summoning stuff is ridiculous.
- 55:04Okay, like so just breaks the world, it does it have enough.
- 55:08Unlike the first time you're like shocked, like, whoa, like
- 55:12they're doing this, but then any other time after that is just
- 55:15like wait a minute but they could just do whatever they want
- 55:18now. Hmm.
- 55:19Last thing. The famous prison visitation
- 55:22kiss. I feel like this is a famous
- 55:24kiss. And here.
- 55:27Yeah, I would say this is a pretty okay, well, known case
- 55:31where she goes. I love you for the third time
- 55:33and that's a running thing where he's like if she tells it to be
- 55:36one more time, I think we'll fall for her and she doesn't.
- 55:40What is this like Peter with the three crows before the rooster
- 55:45crows three times. You will deny me three times.
- 55:49Except you'll tell me. I love you three times and the
- 55:52third time is the charm. So Yeah, he's she makes him his
- 55:58heart stirs or whatever the to be continued, like Scribble
- 56:01comes up. Yeah, and then she pops out and
- 56:04Pops right back in and she's like why do you keep sending me
- 56:10back into this world or whatever?
- 56:11You can think you give me? And he says, I was afraid, I
- 56:15would never see you again and then boom, this are making out
- 56:18in the visitation room, that's very famous.
- 56:22Gotcha, I don't know what's it, like, you have no reaction.
- 56:25You're just like, okay, you know what it is.
- 56:31I do not have the same sensibility when it comes to
- 56:34romantic stuff as people watching kdramas because from
- 56:41what I gather and again this is only my force is your fourth
- 56:45one. So, I can't, I can't be upset at
- 56:48you for being, like, whatever about something.
- 56:50That's actually quite impressive about a show especially when it
- 56:55comes to physical stuff. Like you're just like, yeah,
- 57:00they were kissing. Yeah, they know.
- 57:03Like like I understand if this was like they're like first
- 57:07kiss, like that. Really.
- 57:09And it's not even because they do kiss before that like yeah
- 57:13just randomly in moments, but I guess the sensibility coming
- 57:18from the western side here. Yes.
- 57:21That when there is like that moment of love like in a premise
- 57:26of a show that's similar to this.
- 57:28Let's say there's a build up to that There is like flirtation
- 57:33and then there's like, you know, there's like physical moment and
- 57:37then they're like, climactic moment is where like the kiss
- 57:42happens. A lot of the things that I
- 57:45noticed that people get, you know, kind of hyped for on
- 57:49Korean shows are like things that would never get talked
- 57:55about it all in an American show like oh they they held hands and
- 57:59it's like cool. Like the why is that beautif
- 58:03heard? Me and Miguel told ya.
- 58:06He dramas and were like, yeah, joking about risk, grabs and
- 58:09piggyback rides, and shit like that.
- 58:10And it's deep. And it's real.
- 58:12Like, when you're in it, you're just like you have a timer in
- 58:17your head. You're like okay by episode 10
- 58:20if it's a romance drama or you have a couple they're going to
- 58:23kiss by episode 10 and if they don't kiss people get upset and
- 58:29they don't kiss at all in the show.
- 58:31People get pissed, people get, you know and imagine what and
- 58:34people judge the kisses and like, it's very common for their
- 58:37be tight-lipped kisses and pecs and things that are really not
- 58:41satisfying to see especially when you're invested in the
- 58:44couple. And in this case, you had like a
- 58:48full-on makeout session and it was like, great.
- 58:51But in other shows, I swear to you.
- 58:54I swear it is hard out there. It's very difficult to find a
- 58:59show that has a great couple that also has really good.
- 59:04Skinship is like the term skinship and you're laughing at
- 59:08me. And that's fine.
- 59:09That's fine. I know this people listening.
- 59:12I know that people listening will understand what I'm saying,
- 59:16especially if you've gotten this far into my review of w but
- 59:21yeah, II know that that scene. Has made the rounds and it it is
- 59:26something fair enough. I'm pretty sure that among
- 59:31Korean shows. That that is a big deal.
- 59:33That's a huge moment. You just didn't clock for me.
- 59:37It doesn't even show up as a blip on like, oh yeah.
- 59:40Yeah. Like for me it's just like, oh,
- 59:41they guess. Like like they like each other,
- 59:44they love each other but like it's not like, oh my God, they
- 59:48kissed know. Like for me it's NeNe.
- 59:50I would say that the general reaction to Kissing scenes is
- 59:55like a touchdown in football like you're just like yes, I did
- 59:59it happen. Oh wow.
- 1:00:01That is the general reaction. I would say.
- 1:00:06Wow, that is a completely different reaction.
- 1:00:09Then you're just like Western find whatever like they're
- 1:00:12kissing. Yeah.
- 1:00:13Or or in a show or something, maybe you'll be like, hey, they
- 1:00:18got together. Hey, look at that or, you know,
- 1:00:21or if it's something that's very odd.
- 1:00:23Obviously Telegraph. Like they're leading to it and
- 1:00:26you know and it's like, there we go, finally, you know, but never
- 1:00:31like there is an expectation. Like you know, I'll give you an
- 1:00:36example of 11 show here in the United States where people were
- 1:00:42waiting. Waiting waiting waiting waiting
- 1:00:43or two shows actually. And it's shows that we've
- 1:00:48mentioned that either. We don't like or whatever.
- 1:00:50But like, the show Friends, for example.
- 1:00:53Yeah. Ross and Rachel, like the
- 1:00:56build-up was so big that when they finally had their first
- 1:01:00kiss, like people went nuts. Well, they imagine that for I
- 1:01:04mean, not, I'm not saying it's friends level frenzy, you don't
- 1:01:07know, I know, but like that enthusiasm for the moment, yes,
- 1:01:12right? No, I get it.
- 1:01:13But the thing is that, it's so rare here in the United States
- 1:01:16because the only other example, I can think of would be on the
- 1:01:20office with Jim and Pam. Yes.
- 1:01:23That was another thing that people were like is it going to
- 1:01:26happen, man? Just the build-up build-up, but
- 1:01:29not every show has that. Not every show has like
- 1:01:33characters that you're just like they need to end up together.
- 1:01:36They and you're just like aggressively waiting for it type
- 1:01:39of thing. Okay, so that's why.
- 1:01:42When it happens here it's rare it's like it's a rare moment in
- 1:01:46Western shows. Yeah.
- 1:01:48But for in Korean shows, it's kind of like it's an
- 1:01:51expectation, not only that it needs.
- 1:01:53Happened. But there's the satisfaction of
- 1:01:56it finally happening. Wow, it's like once it finally
- 1:01:59happens, then you judge how good it was right, right, right.
- 1:02:03That's what I'm trying to get across.
- 1:02:06So I don't think we've ranked are given our rankings yet.
- 1:02:09We I'm going to change things up a little bit.
- 1:02:12We usually do the letterbox rating, which is five stars and
- 1:02:16we do have stars, right? However, we now have a logo.
- 1:02:20We are recording this so far in advance that we didn't.
- 1:02:23Have a logo and now that it's created.
- 1:02:26There's a Soju bottle in our logo.
- 1:02:28And so, how many Soju bottles, would you give the show out of
- 1:02:33five Soju bottles? I would give it to Soju.
- 1:02:37Please Okay let me calm down to yeah no half star.
- 1:02:46Nothing just to no no no I don't need another drink like to is
- 1:02:50fine, we're good, I'm gonna call it a night too.
- 1:02:54So Jewel box. Okay, I'm gonna give it I'm
- 1:03:00going to give it for Nostalgia sake. 3.
- 1:03:02Soju bottles out of 5. Yeah.
- 1:03:06Okay. Middle of the road.
- 1:03:09Got it. Yeah, I was pretty upset about a
- 1:03:11lot of things as you could already tell, but I'm going to
- 1:03:14go with three, which is a safe bet.
- 1:03:17If you had asked me this in 2016, I put it would have put
- 1:03:22maybe three and a half or four got it.
- 1:03:24But again, you're revisiting everything lens.
- 1:03:27Different lens, few years of podcasting and movie reviews
- 1:03:32under my belt. And I have more Different kdrama
- 1:03:37palate than I did back then and I feel like I can just
- 1:03:40articulate a little better. What I didn't like and what's an
- 1:03:43issue with a show? So three for me, two for you
- 1:03:48correct. I think that's a wrap on W.
- 1:03:50Oh my God. Good Lord.
- 1:03:55So let me let me ask you this, okay.
- 1:03:57And maybe maybe you know it, maybe you don't but did you know
- 1:04:03that W is coming to the United States?
- 1:04:07What do you mean? So in April, what are you saying
- 1:04:10this year? A couple months ago, we go I'm
- 1:04:12not prepared for this. The Masked Singer executive
- 1:04:15producer Craig pledis are plastic.
- 1:04:17Sorry has basically bought the rights for the Korean
- 1:04:22Supernatural. Format W, Two Worlds for CBS
- 1:04:26Studios know. So they are going to make that
- 1:04:29show here in America. I'm like buzzing, they just and,
- 1:04:35you know, they describe the premise of the Same show 30.
- 1:04:38Yeah, pretty much to a tee. So they don't have like anyone
- 1:04:44going, but this is the same guy who has, you know, bought and
- 1:04:50sold different scripts that have been made into American shows,
- 1:04:54like the good doctor. Apparently that was a Korean
- 1:04:57show that got made in is and that's in its fourth season
- 1:05:01leash. It, there's a TV ad app.
- 1:05:04I didn't even realize site is coming to Bo.
- 1:05:07Yes. I know about that.
- 1:05:09You know he's the one that took the concept of Masked Singer
- 1:05:13brought it over here so he is been, he's mining cake.
- 1:05:18Oh yeah, entertaining K entertainment and so now he's
- 1:05:21going into scripted television and bringing stuff over and so
- 1:05:25w, Two Worlds is coming to America through CBS Studios.
- 1:05:31I I'm shocked. Does that?
- 1:05:35Wait, does that mean we have to watch it?
- 1:05:37We I mean, watch it. We, I think we should watch that
- 1:05:40unique Harrison. Yes.
- 1:05:42We have a unique position here that we've watched.
- 1:05:45Okay drama. We'll see when that comes out
- 1:05:50because obviously they just announced it a couple months
- 1:05:52ago. So maybe we'll start getting
- 1:05:54like, announcements of, you know, casting and all that
- 1:05:58coming soon. But for now, we know that it's
- 1:06:01coming, my love is just dropped, like still in shock.
- 1:06:06I want to be surprised. You know what I?
- 1:06:08I said the same thing or I said this about signal, this would be
- 1:06:15very interesting. It's a very good show and we
- 1:06:18talked about it already. If you haven't heard it, go back
- 1:06:21in the podcast feed and, and listen to that episode about
- 1:06:24signal. I would love to see what an
- 1:06:28American version would look like.
- 1:06:30Right, you know, like would they Would they, you know, do the
- 1:06:34same exact thing or would they play around a little more with
- 1:06:37time, you know, or something like that?
- 1:06:39So, you know, it's a cool thing that they're seeing what's going
- 1:06:45on in Korea with their entertainment.
- 1:06:47It's a, it's think, you know, let's let's try it.
- 1:06:50Let's try it over here, it's a wave, it's a wave music, human
- 1:06:55comes, huge TV, movies like Korean entertainment, and I'm
- 1:07:00sure that, you know, besides Ed's Boys Over Flowers, you're
- 1:07:03feeling like the production values of these are just.
- 1:07:06The production values are much better and it's 2016 as well,
- 1:07:13right, 2016. Another that the problem is not
- 1:07:18how they look. They look good.
- 1:07:20Yeah, you know, you know outside of like fashionable stuff from
- 1:07:24like Boys Over Flowers but that's an old show at this
- 1:07:26point. Yeah.
- 1:07:28But no the production values are good.
- 1:07:31It's just I have problems, a lot of times so far outside of
- 1:07:36signal, with a lot of the plot stuff, where a lot of the script
- 1:07:39stuff. Yeah, that's where I have my
- 1:07:41Hang-Ups on. So, hopefully the next show that
- 1:07:47we do, yes, we'll have like, either, you know, plots or, you
- 1:07:52know, some stuff that I really enjoy.
- 1:07:54I am trying to do my best not to repeat main actors.
- 1:07:59Oh okay. And so if you seen an actor
- 1:08:02before, we're not going to do another show with that same
- 1:08:05actor in this season one, at least in this season.
- 1:08:08One, I feel like I'm trying to get the most diversity in terms
- 1:08:13of like the show's in the plots. And oh, this one had
- 1:08:16Supernatural Fantastical elements.
- 1:08:17And so the next one won't or this one had a lot of Romance.
- 1:08:21The next one won't. So I'm trying to be as Fair as
- 1:08:25possible because I know my kdrama tastes are.
- 1:08:29Not the same as your kdrama taste is very obvious in four
- 1:08:33episodes deep that we are not not the same as far as what we
- 1:08:40like in in the world of K entertainment.
- 1:08:43But I'm hoping that the next you will find a winner again like we
- 1:08:47did for signal and the scores will go higher, the Soju will
- 1:08:55flow. Alright, anything else you?
- 1:08:59It's add, that was a crazy. I'm still reeling America.
- 1:09:02I know that's going to be all from me, okay.
- 1:09:06All right. Well, thank you for listening
- 1:09:08guys. Again, if you enjoyed our show,
- 1:09:11please rate and subscribe on Apple podcasts, and follow us on
- 1:09:14all the social zat. ATC Dybbuk pod, and yeah, tune

- 1:09:21episode next week. That's our show.
- 1:09:24I'm Jessica and I'm Rico, and this has been the ATC It's
- 1:09:29daebak K. Rambles podcast.
