- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is a Monday.
- 0:16It is the 17th of July and good on you for pressing play and
- 0:22inviting me into your day. Be it a big one.
- 0:26Or a relaxing one, or anywhere in between.
- 0:29So glad that you and I get to do this.
- 0:32We are going to continue reading through this epic book of
- 0:37Isaiah. Now, the first five chapters of
- 0:40Isaiah are these collection of oracles, this introduction to
- 0:44the broad scope of the book of Isaiah.
- 0:48And then from tomorrow we Commission the prophet, and then
- 0:51he begins to talk against the king.
- 0:53But we'll get to that. In the meantime, today we begin
- 0:58with a beautiful song about the Lord's vineyard.
- 1:01And then it gets ugly talking about what Judah is doing wrong.
- 1:06Ah, yes, it will cover a lot of ground.
- 1:10So why don't we do that together, reading together
- 1:14Isaiah, chapter 5. Now I will sing for the one I
- 1:29love, a song about his vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a
- 1:34rich and fertile hill. He ploughed the land, cleared
- 1:39its stones, and planted it with the best vines.
- 1:42In the middle he built a watchtower and carved a wine
- 1:46press in the nearby rocks. Then he waited for a harvest of
- 1:51sweet grapes, But the grapes that grew.
- 1:55Were bitter. Now you people of Jerusalem and
- 1:59Judah, you judge between me and my vineyard.
- 2:03What more could I've done for my vineyard?
- 2:06What have I not already done When I expected sweet grapes,
- 2:11why did my vineyard give me bitter grapes?
- 2:14Now let me tell you what I will do to my vineyard.
- 2:18I will tear down its hedges and let it be destroyed.
- 2:23I will break down its walls and let the animals trample it.
- 2:27I will make it a wild place, where the vines are not pruned
- 2:30and the ground is not hoed. A place overgrown with briars
- 2:34and thorns. I will command the clouds to
- 2:38drop, No rain on it. The nation of Israel is the
- 2:42vineyard of the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 2:45The people of Judah are his pleasant garden.
- 2:49He expected a crop of justice, but instead.
- 2:53He found oppression. He expected to find
- 2:56righteousness, but instead he heard cries of violence.
- 3:01What sorrow for you who buy up house after house and field
- 3:06after field, until everyone is evicted and you live alone in
- 3:11the land. But I have heard the Lord of
- 3:14Heaven's armies swear a solemn oath.
- 3:17Many houses will stand deserted. Even beautiful mansions will be
- 3:22empty. 10 acres of vineyard will not produce even 6 gallons of
- 3:27wine. 10 baskets of seed will yield only one basket of grain.
- 3:34What sorrow for those who get up early in the morning looking for
- 3:38a drink of alcohol and spend long evenings drinking wine to
- 3:42make themselves flaming drunk. They furnish wine and lovely
- 3:47music at their grand parties, Lyre and harp, tambourine and
- 3:51flute. But they never think about the
- 3:54Lord or notice what he is doing. So my people will go into exile
- 4:00far away, because they do not know me.
- 4:05Those who are great and honored will starve, and the common
- 4:09people will die of thirst. The grave is licking its lips in
- 4:14anticipation, opening its mouth wide, the great and the lowly.
- 4:21And all the drunken mob will be swallowed up, humanity will be
- 4:25destroyed and people brought down.
- 4:27Even the arrogant will lower their eyes in humiliation.
- 4:31But the Lord of Heaven's armies will be exalted by his justice.
- 4:36The holiness of the Lord will be displayed by his righteousness.
- 4:41In that day lambs will find good pastures, and fattened sheep and
- 4:46young goats will feed among the ruins.
- 4:50What's sorrow for those who drag their sins behind them with
- 4:53ropes, made of lies, who drag wickedness behind them like a
- 4:58cart? They even mock God and say hurry
- 5:03up and do something. We want to see what you can do.
- 5:06Let the Holy One of Israel carry out his plan, for we want to
- 5:10know what it is. What's sorrow for those who say
- 5:14that evil is good and good is evil?
- 5:18That dark is light and light is dark.
- 5:21That bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
- 5:24What sorrow for those who are wise in their own eyes and think
- 5:30themselves so clever? What sorrow for those who are
- 5:34heroes are drinking wine and boast about all the alcohol they
- 5:38can hold? They take bribes to let the
- 5:40wicked go free, and they punish the innocent therefore, just as
- 5:45fire licks up stubble. And dry grass shrivels in the
- 5:49flame, so their roots will rot and their flowers wither.
- 5:55For they have rejected the law of the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 5:59They have despied the word of the Holy One of Israel.
- 6:03That is why the Lord's anger burns against his people, and
- 6:07why he has raised his fists to crush them.
- 6:11The mountains tremble. And the corpses of his people
- 6:15litter the streets like garbage. But even then, the Lord's anger
- 6:20is not satisfied. His fist is still poised to
- 6:24strike. He will send a signal to distant
- 6:27nations far away and whistle to those at the ends of the earth.
- 6:32They will come racing toward Jerusalem.
- 6:35They will not get tired or stumble.
- 6:37They will not stop for rest or sleep.
- 6:40Not a belt will be loose, nor a sandal strap broken.
- 6:44Their arrows will be sharp and their bows ready for battle.
- 6:48Sparks will fly from their horses hooves and the wheels of
- 6:52their Chariots will spin like a whirlwind.
- 6:55They will roar like lions, like the strongest of lions growling,
- 7:00they will pounce on their victims and carry them off, and
- 7:03no one will be there to rescue them.
- 7:06They will roar over the victims on that day of destruction, like
- 7:10the roaring of the sea. If someone looks across the
- 7:13land, only darkness and distress will be seen.
- 7:18Even the light will be darkened by clouds.
- 7:31What a terrifying description of consequences for your people.
- 7:36And when it sounds like we listen to your anger pronouncing
- 7:42judgment. We're reminded that this is a
- 7:45warning saying don't go that way, please come back to me.
- 7:50If you go there, this is what will happen, Lord you.
- 7:58You want nothing but the best for us and you have a plan for
- 8:03us which is so good. And when we start to go the
- 8:08opposite direction, you cry out to us, you.
- 8:11Prick our conscience to draw us back to avoid those
- 8:14consequences. But sometimes our stubborn
- 8:19humanity gets a better of us and we still can't help ourselves.
- 8:23And even then, when we move away from you, you love us and you
- 8:28reach out to us, and through Jesus you forgive us.
- 8:34Ah, we are just so grateful for your kindness and provision for
- 8:38us. We pray all of this in that
- 8:42merciful kind name of Jesus. Amen.
