Latest / Inside Country with Wayne D / Gavin Adcock is About to be Your Favorite Artist
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: I'm so excited because it's been a minute. Actually, I
- 0:03Speaker 1: can't even tell you the last time. Oh, we caught up.
- 0:05Speaker 1: It was over at the record label.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. About three months ago, four months ago? Oh, it
- 0:10Speaker 2: feels like a year and a half ago. Now I'm
- 0:11Speaker 2: going to own that. Right?
- 0:13Speaker 3: Hanging with Gavin Adcock. Dude, good to see you, man.
- 0:15Speaker 2: How are things? Good to see you, too. It's great, man.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Dude, one of my favorite things about you is how,
- 0:21Speaker 1: in any other setting, you would not be caught dead
- 0:24Speaker 1: on social media, I would guess.
- 0:27Speaker 3: But for some reason.
- 0:29Speaker 1: you have come out of your comfort zone, and, like,
- 0:31Speaker 1: your social content is funny.
- 0:33Speaker 3: It's good.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Like, do you overthink it sometimes? Because I know that's
- 0:37Speaker 1: a big part of not only being a newer artist,
- 0:39Speaker 1: introducing yourself to, like, mainstream country fans, but even just, like,
- 0:42Speaker 1: signing a record deal. It's like, cool, we've heard your music,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but what are you doing on TikTok?
- 0:46Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, they like the live stuff just as good
- 0:49Speaker 4: as you promoting a song.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 4: And you just got to promote your music without saying, hey,
- 0:56Speaker 4: I got some new songs coming out. But that's part
- 1:00Speaker 4: of it as well. You have to do that some.
- 1:01Speaker 4: But just the life things. Like the other day I
- 1:04Speaker 4: was on stage and a little girl came up there
- 1:06Speaker 4: and said she had a sign that said I can
- 1:08Speaker 4: lick my eyeball for an autograph. And I was like,
- 1:12Speaker 4: all right, bring her up. And I asked her what
- 1:14Speaker 4: her name was, got the crowd to cheer for her.
- 1:16Speaker 4: I said, you want to show us?
- 1:17Speaker 2: She said, yep. Popped her fake eye out, licked it,
- 1:20Speaker 2: popped it back in.
- 1:22Speaker 4: And I thought it was so awesome because it probably
- 1:28Speaker 4: could be a major insecurity for her life, and she
- 1:30Speaker 4: owned it and did it in.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Front of 6,000, 7,000 people. And I love stuff like that.
- 1:36Speaker 3: That's so crazy. And I did see that video, too.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And it's cool for you because every artist is an artist, right?
- 1:44Speaker 1: But when you create a moment like that, you probably
- 1:47Speaker 1: won over so many people in that crowd because not
- 1:49Speaker 1: only did you create the moment, but you made her comfortable.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Yeah. No doubt. I mean, I try to, once a show,
- 1:55Speaker 4: there's a bunch of little kids. Now they've started bringing signs.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Please let me up on stage. Once a show, I
- 2:00Speaker 4: take five, seven minutes and say, all right, security, if
- 2:04Speaker 4: there's a little kid up here that wants to come
- 2:07Speaker 4: up here and get on stage, that's awesome. Sometimes it's
- 2:09Speaker 4: three or four, and I can go by and ask
- 2:11Speaker 4: them all their names. Sometimes it's 15. And I get
- 2:14Speaker 4: the crowd to cheer for all of them and just
- 2:16Speaker 4: sign some hats and stuff.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And everybody in the crowd is just waiting.
- 2:19Speaker 4: I'm like, y'all are going to wait a dang second
- 2:20Speaker 4: because these little kids are going to get their time,
- 2:22Speaker 4: you know.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Is there ever a part of you that's like, hey,
- 2:27Speaker 1: every now and again there's some alcohol consumption and some
- 2:30Speaker 1: foul words.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Why did y'all bring your kids here?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I mean, I do think that sometimes.
- 2:36Speaker 4: I saw this little kid on his daddy's shoulders, and
- 2:40Speaker 4: his daddy obviously gave it to.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Him, and he must have been five.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And he wasn't drinking or anything.
- 2:46Speaker 4: But I looked over to him. He's like two rows deep.
- 2:49Speaker 4: He had a fireball shot. And I said, throw it
- 2:52Speaker 4: to me. He launched it up there and I took it.
- 2:55Speaker 4: And well, then I brought the kids on stage.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 4: And he had another fireball shot in his hand. I said,
- 3:00Speaker 4: give me that. I was like, you don't. Don't be
- 3:04Speaker 4: throwing that around.
- 3:05Speaker 3: He just had him in his pockets.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And I was like, your parents are wild for bringing
- 3:09Speaker 2: you for sure.
- 3:09Speaker 3: That's so funny, man. We were just talking about the
- 3:14Speaker 3: scene of the climb.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Obviously, that video went crazy viral about an altercation that
- 3:20Speaker 1: happened not long ago. But you said that idea all
- 3:23Speaker 1: came from the bus drivers you pulled up.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Yeah, we were driving by the fence incident spot. And
- 3:29Speaker 4: I was sitting there in the front seat with the
- 3:31Speaker 4: bus driver. I said, Mike, there's the spot where it happened.
- 3:35Speaker 4: He said, the scene of the climb. I said, man,
- 3:38Speaker 4: you're a genius, dude. I was like, that's the caption.
- 3:42Speaker 2: It doesn't bother me, and it doesn't affect me at all.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I think it's funny.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I think it's a joke now. I make light of
- 3:50Speaker 4: situations where people are like, oh, that was bad.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Is any part of you like, okay, but we're moving on?
- 3:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I'm about to the point of moving on,
- 4:00Speaker 4: but we were headlining that festival, and we were back,
- 4:03Speaker 4: and I was like, I'm not missing this opportunity to laugh.
- 4:05Speaker 4: You've got to laugh when you can.
- 4:08Speaker 3: That's so good, man.
- 4:10Speaker 1: When you think of what you have accomplished, because you've
- 4:13Speaker 1: been at it for a while, but what you've accomplished.
- 4:15Speaker 3: In the last year, two.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Years, it has to feel like you went from walking
- 4:20Speaker 1: like a turtle in this business to riding a jet
- 4:25Speaker 1: because you have taken off and you're playing all these
- 4:27Speaker 1: massive shows.
- 4:28Speaker 3: What do you think the difference was that turned the
- 4:31Speaker 3: corner for you?
- 4:34Speaker 4: At first, it was just all about gaining everybody's respect
- 4:37Speaker 4: in music. There was these acts that have been around
- 4:41Speaker 4: for 10 15 years that were so established and nobody
- 4:47Speaker 4: likes when a new kid rolls into town and starts
- 4:50Speaker 4: making some noise and and when i'm 10 years down
- 4:54Speaker 4: the road i'll probably be pissed off when some new
- 4:56Speaker 4: kid rolls in town and makes some noise too and
- 4:59Speaker 4: uh that's that was the whole concept of this album
- 5:02Speaker 4: that's coming out it's the the day i hang it
- 5:04Speaker 4: up yeah And it's all about, hey, no matter how
- 5:08Speaker 4: you feel about me, no matter what your view is
- 5:11Speaker 4: or what you think about my music, I'm here to stay.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And the day I hang it up is when I decide.
- 5:18Speaker 1: You have this traditional approach and sound to a lot
- 5:22Speaker 1: of your songs. Were you ever like, hey, maybe I
- 5:25Speaker 1: got to mold that a little bit to fit where
- 5:27Speaker 1: country seems to be right now? Or were you like, no,
- 5:30Speaker 1: we're just going to do it our way and hopefully
- 5:31Speaker 1: y'all can catch on?
- 5:32Speaker 4: I just want to do it our way and hopefully
- 5:34Speaker 4: everybody caught on. I say this all the time, but
- 5:38Speaker 4: I bounce around within the barriers of country music. I mean,
- 5:42Speaker 4: I can do something more modern. I do something more traditional,
- 5:45Speaker 4: something 90s, slow ballads, and everything in between. So my
- 5:50Speaker 4: fans are never expecting me to let out a certain
- 5:54Speaker 4: type of song. So if I let out Cigarette, which
- 5:56Speaker 4: is a slow ballad, acoustic, steel, and vocals, I didn't
- 6:01Speaker 4: let out another song like that for another year and
- 6:03Speaker 4: a half. And I could have and probably built some
- 6:07Speaker 4: success off that, but that would have pigeonholed me into
- 6:11Speaker 4: only making that type of music. And I've seen a
- 6:14Speaker 4: bunch of artists that had this hit, and then their
- 6:16Speaker 4: next hit sounded really similar. And it helped them, but
- 6:20Speaker 4: it also hurt them from being able to do anything
- 6:23Speaker 4: they wanted to.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And I love being versatile.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You had mentioned that it can be tough to be
- 6:29Speaker 1: like the new kid coming in, right? And the wave
- 6:33Speaker 1: of new artists that And I hate saying new because
- 6:36Speaker 1: it's not like this ain't new to you.
- 6:38Speaker 3: You've been doing it right. But the wave of newer artists.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Over the past couple of years, I mean, puts country
- 6:43Speaker 1: in a spot to stay successful for a long time.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Who are some of the artists who have been established
- 6:50Speaker 1: that you've been able to meet and work with or
- 6:53Speaker 1: write with or somebody who even just reached out and
- 6:55Speaker 1: was super supportive?
- 6:56Speaker 3: Like, hey, man, like you're going to go places, keep working.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Yeah, well, one of my favorite artist interactions that I
- 7:03Speaker 4: ever had, I might have been after the CMAs or something.
- 7:07Speaker 4: We were in Nashville, and I went to Losers, and
- 7:09Speaker 4: the first time I ever met Luke Combs. And I
- 7:14Speaker 4: expected him to be a nice guy, but he was
- 7:16Speaker 4: just like, man, he gave me so much props when
- 7:20Speaker 4: I talked to him. He's like, I love how you've
- 7:21Speaker 4: always been just outspoken and done what you wanted to
- 7:24Speaker 4: and said what you wanted to.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I wish that I would have.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Done that a little bit more when I was starting
- 7:29Speaker 4: out instead of just like staying quiet and just, and
- 7:32Speaker 4: he's like, he's like, you keep doing it, keep killing it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And that was one of my favorite moments. I've, I've
- 7:37Speaker 2: met an artist.
- 7:38Speaker 1: What does it mean to you that at some point
- 7:41Speaker 1: you're going to be able to turn around and do
- 7:42Speaker 1: that to a young guy or girl coming in to like,
- 7:45Speaker 1: kind of give them the stamp of approval, like, Hey,
- 7:47Speaker 1: like you're in the right spot.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Keep, keep hustling. What does it mean for you to,
- 7:51Speaker 3: to eventually take that role?
- 7:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been, I feel like I've been doing that
- 7:55Speaker 4: on a smaller level. since I started playing shows.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Um, as a headliner and having two to three openers,
- 8:04Speaker 4: some headliners might not help their openers at.
- 8:07Speaker 2: All, but I've just always took the approach.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Of, I'm going to give you some pointers if I
- 8:12Speaker 4: can and help you work social media or help you
- 8:15Speaker 4: be more confident or help you be more confident on stage.
- 8:18Speaker 4: And I've always just, I've loved being a mentor to
- 8:21Speaker 4: anybody that's opened up for me and helping them grow
- 8:24Speaker 4: and be more successful and, If they take some of
- 8:26Speaker 4: my advice, I see their growth. And, you know, I
- 8:31Speaker 4: could just be like, no, I'm being self-centered and I'm
- 8:35Speaker 4: not going to help them because I don't want them to.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Take any of my shine away. And I don't feel
- 8:41Speaker 2: like that.
- 8:41Speaker 4: I feel like, well, what if one of my openers
- 8:44Speaker 4: one day, I give them some advice, and they pop
- 8:47Speaker 4: off to a giant level to a point where they're
- 8:49Speaker 4: possibly bigger than me, and they go, you know, Let's
- 8:54Speaker 4: have Gavin play some shows with us. That's my approach.
- 8:58Speaker 4: I never want to be selfish in that.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's funny because there's so many artists who just want
- 9:05Speaker 1: to play. They don't care where they are on the bill.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And there's some artists, and I don't remember the artist
- 9:09Speaker 1: that told us the story, but they were like, oh, yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I'm opening for Sam Hunt on this next tour. I
- 9:17Speaker 1: remember when Sam opened for me, and I was like,
- 9:20Speaker 1: What a crazy moment that is that, like, you gave
- 9:22Speaker 1: somebody that opportunity, and then as they climbed, all of
- 9:24Speaker 1: a sudden they're like, hey, we got a spot.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Like, come on out.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a great part of having friends. And it
- 9:31Speaker 4: took me a while to have friends being that new
- 9:33Speaker 4: guy because most people are like, no, we don't respect him.
- 9:37Speaker 4: He hadn't gained our respect yet. But I just always
- 9:41Speaker 4: try to respect everybody that respects me. And that's the
- 9:45Speaker 4: great part about it because I could have an opener
- 9:48Speaker 4: that blows up and looks back and goes, you know,
- 9:51Speaker 4: Gavin took care of us. I'm going to take care
- 9:53Speaker 4: of him and put him on these shows that we're playing.
- 9:55Speaker 4: And that's just– it's a good thing to have community
- 9:58Speaker 4: and good friends. And I've probably got 20 good friends
- 10:01Speaker 4: in country music now. Instead of– at first it was
- 10:04Speaker 4: just like everybody's flipping the bird to me and I
- 10:07Speaker 4: was flipping the bird to them and I was like,
- 10:08Speaker 4: watch this, you know.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And now you're like, well, hang on, I'll start with
- 10:12Speaker 1: a handshake, but you might earn your way to the bird.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I feel like the amount of people that we've talked
- 10:20Speaker 1: to in country music, success is great, but like staying
- 10:25Speaker 1: like a student and realizing you can continue to learn
- 10:28Speaker 1: every step of the way to be more successful. What
- 10:31Speaker 1: are some things that you've learned? Obviously one of the
- 10:33Speaker 1: guys that's done it the best over the last five
- 10:36Speaker 1: plus years is Morgan Wallen.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 1: You've worked closely with him in the tour lane. What's
- 10:41Speaker 1: something you've learned from either him or that tour experience
- 10:44Speaker 1: that you're like, Oh, Hey, we got to, we could
- 10:46Speaker 1: do this better, or hey, let's not do this in
- 10:49Speaker 1: the future.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you know, you get to see those shows,
- 10:54Speaker 4: those sides, the production, and you start going, well, they
- 10:58Speaker 4: have this, we could start adding this. I've never once
- 11:02Speaker 4: sat down and been like, I want to write this
- 11:05Speaker 4: song that's like a Morgan song or anything. And me
- 11:10Speaker 4: and Morgan have had similar startups to some controversial things.
- 11:16Speaker 4: And I think he has handled the controversy very, very
- 11:19Speaker 4: well and has made the best out of those situations.
- 11:24Speaker 4: And I always try to, an old man told me
- 11:27Speaker 4: one time, he said, look, you're going to have some
- 11:30Speaker 4: terrible things happen over your career. You got to find
- 11:32Speaker 4: the way to make those situations the best you can
- 11:36Speaker 4: possibly can.
- 11:38Speaker 1: As you get ready, this new album is coming out
- 11:41Speaker 1: the day I hang it up, which is funny because
- 11:43Speaker 1: that's like, That feels like a late-in-the-career Toby Keith title, right?
- 11:48Speaker 1: Like he's been doing it forever, and you haven't been
- 11:51Speaker 1: doing it forever. Why did that title catch your attention
- 11:54Speaker 1: for this album?
- 11:56Speaker 4: Well, we were probably sitting on 120 songs, looking through
- 11:59Speaker 4: all the titles, and I've had all the ups and
- 12:03Speaker 4: downs of my career, of people not liking me, people
- 12:07Speaker 4: loving me. I've got this strong fan base that listens
- 12:10Speaker 4: and And it just goes all out for me. And
- 12:14Speaker 4: then I have these people that hate me and go
- 12:16Speaker 4: all out to hate me. And I don't let it
- 12:19Speaker 4: eat me. It, like, it fuels me. It's my chip
- 12:23Speaker 4: on my shoulder of, like, watch this. So that's why
- 12:26Speaker 4: I named it The Day I Hang It Up. It's
- 12:28Speaker 4: just you can feel however way you want to about me.
- 12:31Speaker 4: But I'm going to keep on moving. I'm going to
- 12:33Speaker 4: keep on doing my thing. And you can either hop
- 12:36Speaker 4: on the train or watch it fly by.
- 12:38Speaker 1: All right. collabs are obviously a big part of country music.
- 12:43Speaker 1: It almost feels like, I don't want to say you
- 12:45Speaker 1: have to, cause you don't have to do anything, but
- 12:47Speaker 1: it feels like there's something in this format right now.
- 12:49Speaker 1: It's like, Oh, that's a great song, but who are
- 12:51Speaker 1: you going to work with on the next one? Yeah. Uh,
- 12:54Speaker 1: you have a couple of collabs on here. Why did,
- 12:56Speaker 1: why did those collabs feel right for this album? Cause again,
- 12:58Speaker 1: you just, you just brought up, you know, working closely
- 13:01Speaker 1: with Morgan and you guys have had some similar, uh,
- 13:04Speaker 1: similar challenges growing as artists. Um, Why were these the
- 13:08Speaker 1: artists that fit versus, like, Bailey Zimmerman? You brought up
- 13:13Speaker 1: Luke Combs, a great interaction with Luke Combs. Or Morgan,
- 13:15Speaker 1: why did these three collabs fit the album best?
- 13:18Speaker 4: Well, it's just people I've got closest to and become
- 13:20Speaker 4: friends with, and I respect them, and they respect me
- 13:23Speaker 4: and what we're doing. And I've had a lot of
- 13:25Speaker 4: FaceTime with Sam Canty from Treaty Oak, and we wrote
- 13:30Speaker 4: that song, and me and Ernest have wrote three or
- 13:33Speaker 4: four songs now, and me and Hudson have been on
- 13:36Speaker 4: different festivals and tours and become friends. And somebody asked
- 13:40Speaker 4: me a few weeks ago, they were like, do you
- 13:42Speaker 4: get management to hit those people about the collabs, or
- 13:44Speaker 4: do you hit them up? I'm like, I want to
- 13:45Speaker 4: get to a point where I'm hitting everybody up. So
- 13:48Speaker 4: every collab we've had on this album, it wasn't brought
- 13:50Speaker 4: to me. It was just we talked and texted and
- 13:54Speaker 4: got on the phone and called and wrote these songs together.
- 13:56Speaker 4: And I think that means the most. And like, I
- 14:01Speaker 4: like Bailey too. We just hadn't had a lot of
- 14:02Speaker 4: time where we've got together. Me and Morgan hadn't sat
- 14:06Speaker 4: down and wrote anything yet.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Dude, you and Bailey Zimmerman would be sick on the
- 14:10Speaker 3: song together.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 14:11Speaker 3: That'd be great.
- 14:13Speaker 1: You bring up the collab with Ernest. He is a
- 14:17Speaker 1: guy who doesn't get the credit he deserves as a
- 14:19Speaker 1: songwriter for some reason.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And I think it's coming. Either that or he's just.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Great at sitting in the background and just letting the
- 14:25Speaker 1: mailbox money show up. As a creator and knowing that
- 14:29Speaker 1: Ernest has had so much success, what did you learn
- 14:31Speaker 1: from him as you guys worked together that maybe you
- 14:33Speaker 1: didn't realize before?
- 14:35Speaker 4: Well, me and Ernest sat down and wrote this song,
- 14:38Speaker 4: Saved My Breath, on the album that I felt like, wow,
- 14:41Speaker 4: this has a very hit feel to it. And Ernest
- 14:46Speaker 4: has done this thing in his career where he has
- 14:49Speaker 4: wrote the hit and got somebody else to cut it.
- 14:52Speaker 2: And I was like, how about we get Ernest on
- 14:56Speaker 2: one of these hits?
- 14:57Speaker 4: He's obviously got great songs and songs that have done very,
- 15:00Speaker 4: very well, but he could have cut some of them
- 15:02Speaker 4: songs that he wrote and made them hits, and I
- 15:05Speaker 4: just really wanted him to be on one of those
- 15:07Speaker 4: songs that I felt passionately about and how much energy
- 15:11Speaker 4: and how big it felt when we wrote it, and
- 15:13Speaker 4: he was all down for it.
- 15:16Speaker 1: So this album is 25 songs deep, which is so
- 15:20Speaker 1: funny because traditionally– and I'm sure it was this way
- 15:23Speaker 1: when you were younger, traditionally an album is 8 to
- 15:25Speaker 1: 11 songs, right?
- 15:27Speaker 3: And that's it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I mean, closer to 8 than 11 most times. In
- 15:31Speaker 1: the past few years, there's albums that are still 8
- 15:33Speaker 1: songs deep. There's albums that are 75 songs deep. It's
- 15:37Speaker 1: all over the place now. So how did 25 fit?
- 15:39Speaker 1: Do you consider this like a double album? How does
- 15:42Speaker 1: this album line up for you?
- 15:43Speaker 4: Well, my first album was 14 songs. My next album
- 15:47Speaker 4: was 16 songs. And then I leveled up to... 24 songs.
- 15:55Speaker 4: And I just want to continue to beat myself. And so,
- 15:59Speaker 4: so it was 25 songs. And then the week after
- 16:02Speaker 4: the album comes out, um, the next Friday, I'm gonna
- 16:04Speaker 4: let out a bonus track. So it'd be 26. And
- 16:08Speaker 4: I just feel like it's, uh, people's attention spans are
- 16:11Speaker 4: so quick nowadays. I want to give them something that
- 16:14Speaker 4: they can latch onto and sit with for a while
- 16:17Speaker 4: and come back to and find a new one that
- 16:20Speaker 4: they like that they've, that they maybe didn't find on day.
- 16:23Speaker 2: One when they listened. And the world's just different.
- 16:29Speaker 4: An eight-song album might do really well, and some people
- 16:32Speaker 4: still do it very well, but I'm about speed and
- 16:35Speaker 4: a ton of music, and I just want to be
- 16:37Speaker 4: known for letting out more music than everybody else.
- 16:40Speaker 1: When you look at the 25 songs that you have here,
- 16:43Speaker 1: is there one that raises its hand and is like, man,
- 16:46Speaker 1: this one, Let's say a fan comes to you at
- 16:49Speaker 1: a meet and greet.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Oh, I got the new album. I love track 2, 7,
- 16:52Speaker 3: and 12.
- 16:54Speaker 1: What's the song that you'd be like, oh, hey, make
- 16:57Speaker 1: sure you've spent some time with this one, though?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I really like the song Bad Off. It's either
- 17:06Speaker 4: track seven or eight. It's hard to keep up. I
- 17:10Speaker 4: was thinking about this earlier. I was like, if I
- 17:12Speaker 4: go back three albums, I don't think I can tell
- 17:13Speaker 4: you the order.
- 17:14Speaker 2: There's just been so many. I'd have to look at them. Oh, yeah,
- 17:17Speaker 2: this song was here, but Bad Off.
- 17:19Speaker 4: On this new record is a good blend of, I
- 17:23Speaker 4: feel like, what my fans really, really love. It's rambunctious, rowdy,
- 17:27Speaker 4: but it's got its own sound. It sounds different than
- 17:30Speaker 4: anything anybody's ever let out. I'm dropping this one. this
- 17:36Speaker 4: Friday before the album comes out. And I'm, I'm just
- 17:38Speaker 4: excited for them to get that one. I feel like
- 17:40Speaker 4: I saved the best one for last to get everybody's
- 17:43Speaker 4: attention on the album.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:45Speaker 3: I love that. I love that.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Uh, we're down here on lower Broadway and, uh, it's
- 17:51Speaker 1: the place where music is covered heavily, right? You're to
- 17:54Speaker 1: a spot where your music's going to start to be
- 17:57Speaker 1: covered more and more in the honky tonks down here.
- 18:00Speaker 1: But when it comes to, if you're doing a cover,
- 18:02Speaker 1: let's say you're going to throw, you know, two or
- 18:04Speaker 1: three covers in a set on a Friday night. What
- 18:07Speaker 1: are some ones that you're like, Oh, this here, this
- 18:09Speaker 1: is my wheelhouse for, for songs that we're adding.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 4: Um, we used to cover, give me three steps by
- 18:19Speaker 4: Leonard Skinner. Uh, last year we covered blue suede shoes
- 18:23Speaker 4: by Elvis, which I love that. Cause I get up
- 18:25Speaker 4: there and do my dang, my drunk dancing where I'm
- 18:28Speaker 4: on one foot sliding across the stage. And then a
- 18:32Speaker 4: fan favorite that I've played ever since my first concert,
- 18:35Speaker 4: my first concert, we played 25 songs, and we played
- 18:40Speaker 4: two originals and 23 covers.
- 18:42Speaker 2: And I introduced the drummer.
- 18:45Speaker 4: To the guitarist, to the acoustic guitarist, 15 minutes before
- 18:49Speaker 4: the show, and I sent them all the songs that
- 18:52Speaker 4: we were playing. And I was like, if we make
- 18:54Speaker 4: it through this set without there being any major mess-ups,
- 18:57Speaker 4: then we will be in a dang good spot. And
- 19:01Speaker 4: that song that we've continued to play is Dinosaur by
- 19:04Speaker 4: Hank Williams Jr. And I don't know if I'll ever
- 19:08Speaker 4: take that one off the set. It's just, it's always
- 19:10Speaker 4: been on, the only time I've never played it is
- 19:12Speaker 4: when I was playing festivals and I was opening up
- 19:14Speaker 4: for Hank. And I'm not going to play, I'm not
- 19:17Speaker 4: going to play somebody's song that I'm opening up for,
- 19:19Speaker 4: you know.
- 19:20Speaker 3: That'd be the last time you played with him.
- 19:21Speaker 2: No doubt. No doubt.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Last thing I want to ask is, awards season is
- 19:27Speaker 1: just around the corner and awards are, It's funny because
- 19:30Speaker 1: the award situation means so much to so many different people, right?
- 19:35Speaker 1: It's like, oh, that's my goal. That's all I've ever
- 19:37Speaker 1: wanted to do. And some people are like, you know,
- 19:40Speaker 1: I don't want to say don't worry about the awards
- 19:43Speaker 1: because I'm not trying to trick you into saying something
- 19:46Speaker 1: negative here. But it's like when you look back 50
- 19:50Speaker 1: years from now when you're sitting on 200 acres of
- 19:52Speaker 1: land on the front porch on a Sunday morning and
- 19:56Speaker 1: you go, man, I.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Was successful because... What does that look like for you?
- 20:01Speaker 2: You know, awards are awesome. And my thought on it
- 20:08Speaker 2: is if... I get nominated, that's awesome. I'm going to go.
- 20:12Speaker 2: If I win, that's great. If I don't get nominated,
- 20:17Speaker 2: I'm not going to pout about it because.
- 20:20Speaker 4: One of these songs on this 26-song album to one
- 20:24Speaker 4: person or anybody that listens is an award-winning song regardless
- 20:28Speaker 4: if you've got a plaque to put on the wall
- 20:30Speaker 4: or a trophy to put on the wall. So it's
- 20:32Speaker 4: all about finding your fan base and that being a
- 20:37Speaker 4: number one to them or that being an award-winning song
- 20:39Speaker 4: to them.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And that's all it's ever been about to me.
- 20:42Speaker 1: And there's zero disrespect to anybody that takes home hardware
- 20:46Speaker 1: at these shows, but none of them are fan-voted. And
- 20:49Speaker 1: I think when fans get upset, the fans need to
- 20:52Speaker 1: remember that because it's like, calm down.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Not everybody got to vote. Otherwise, it might have been different.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:00Speaker 4: I mean, I think it should be fan-voted. It would
- 21:04Speaker 4: be kind of complicated because... By metrics, Morgan Wallen should
- 21:09Speaker 4: win everything that he's ever nominated for. But it's voted
- 21:13Speaker 4: by people around the town and the industry, and Morgan
- 21:17Speaker 4: Wallen was that new kid that came up that pissed
- 21:19Speaker 4: everybody off because he was so successful. So you would
- 21:23Speaker 4: have to find a way to go, okay, this person's
- 21:25Speaker 4: this big, and this person's this big, and figure out
- 21:30Speaker 4: how you could count the voting in an even way
- 21:33Speaker 4: compared to fan base size. And that's a complicated deal.
- 21:37Speaker 4: But I'm— I don't ever hate on anybody for taking
- 21:40Speaker 4: home an award. That's a great moment for them, and
- 21:42Speaker 4: I'm happy for them, regardless if I'm in the back
- 21:44Speaker 4: of my mind. I'm like, they shouldn't have won that.
- 21:48Speaker 4: I'm never going to come out and raise hell about it.
- 21:52Speaker 3: No, I feel you, man.
- 21:53Speaker 1: As we get ready to wrap up 2026, which is
- 21:58Speaker 1: wild that there's not much left of this, what are
- 22:01Speaker 1: some pivotal moments that you're like, man, that my career
- 22:05Speaker 1: had a great year because?
- 22:09Speaker 4: Just playing bigger and better shows and releasing new music
- 22:14Speaker 4: after having 60-something songs out. There'll be 70-something to 80
- 22:18Speaker 4: songs out of my whole career.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And just.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Taking those old songs and pushing them further down the
- 22:25Speaker 4: list because your new stuff is jumping that. And they
- 22:27Speaker 4: want to hear the new stuff over the old stuff.
- 22:30Speaker 4: And it's funny, my first song I ever let out,
- 22:35Speaker 4: Ain't No Cure, I loved the song. I thought it
- 22:39Speaker 4: was great.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I let it out.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Now it's nearly a double platinum song, and they sing
- 22:43Speaker 4: it just as good as everything every night. But it's
- 22:46Speaker 4: nice to release new music, and then two weeks later
- 22:49Speaker 4: you're playing a show, and the majority of the people are.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Singing every word. You're like, hell yeah.
- 22:55Speaker 4: It's not me competing against Hudson or Morgan. It's me
- 22:59Speaker 4: competing against myself and one-upping myself. So your biggest competitor
- 23:04Speaker 4: in life is going to be yourself every time.
- 23:06Speaker 3: That's a T-shirt and a song.
- 23:08Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Don't give the bus driver all the credit in the future.
- 23:10Speaker 3: You got some good ones in there.
- 23:12Speaker 2: I got a few.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Hey, Gavin, thanks for coming to hang.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
