- 0:081963 marked the first time in five years that only one game was played at the midseason All-Star break.
- 0:14The game took place at Cleveland Stadium in front of only 44,000 in a ballpark that could hold twice as many.
- 0:20It didn't help that the Indians entered the break in sixth place, and their only representative on the All-Star team was Mugcat Grant,
- 0:27who didn't even see any action in the game.
- 0:30The game was notable, however, in that Stan Musial made his 24th and final appearance in the All-Star game,
- 0:36and youngster Carl Yastremski would make his first of 18 future appearances.
- 0:41You can find links to more info on the featured players, teams, and stadium in the episode description.

- 2:20Well, baseball fans, here we are in the city of Cleveland.
- 2:24The 34th All-Star Game, and it marks the third time that this classic between the stars of the American League
- 2:31and the National League have visited the shores of Lake Erie.
- 2:34It's a beautiful day, white clouds floating, a blue sky we can see, the temperature just right,
- 2:40a fine day for a ball game.
- 2:42It's appropriate, I think, that Cleveland's Municipal Stadium,
- 2:45which the Indians have established most of the attendance records of the major leagues,
- 2:48also owns the proud record for this midsummer classic, which dates back to 1933.
- 2:54It was on July the 8th in 1935, and almost 70,000 said in this ballpark,
- 2:59watch the American Leaguers defeat the National Leaguers 4-1.
- 3:03The proud figure still stands as a record for the event, and 19 years later, on July the 14th, 1954,
- 3:09the All-Star Game returned to Cleveland Stadium, and the second biggest gathering in the history of the event,
- 3:1468,751 saw the American League outlast the National League 11-9.
- 3:20And here we are once again now, the new stars of the game, new names for the most part,
- 3:25but the same great game of baseball.
- 3:29It's been 33 games between the two leagues.
- 3:31American League holds the edge 17-50, one game ended in a tie.
- 3:36Some of the great names have played in these All-Star Games, and I think a fitting start to the series,
- 3:42dramatic All-Star Games, individual leads through the years.
- 3:46The initial contest was featured by a two-run home run off the bat of Babe Ruth,
- 3:50first of many notable blows that have been hit in these games.
- 3:53American League defeated the National League 4-2, when Lefty Gomez received credit for the victory,
- 3:58Bill Hallahan being charged with the defeat.
- 4:01Now both the games played here in Cleveland Stadium rate were the most exciting ones of the series,
- 4:05and the first one, Gomez and the Indians' Mal Harder combined to toss a nifty four-hitter
- 4:09in pitching their mates to a 4-1 victory over the National League.
- 4:13More great names, Jimmy Fox, there's a Fox in the ball game today,
- 4:17but the double X was a different one, big, strong hitter,
- 4:20and he had a two-run home run the first half of the first inning,
- 4:23rather the last half of the first inning to send the American League off to an early lead.
- 4:27Later he accounted for a third run with a single.
- 4:30Names like Archie Vaughn, Bill Terry, Gomez, Joel Vosmic,
- 4:34Babe Ruth, Carl Hubbell, Jimmy Fox, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Bobby Dorr,
- 4:40Stan Musial, Red Chains, Enos Slaughter, Manny Minoso, Whitey Ford, Willie Mays,
- 4:45and just a few who have been outstanding in these ball games.
- 4:49And I suppose, too, there's a bit of difference that you can find,
- 4:53and this one is compared to the World Series.
- 4:55The World Series pits the two winning teams.
- 4:58Here, it's kind of a dream, really, because a dream fulfilled,
- 5:02because you see the greats as selected by the teammates themselves
- 5:05who will play in this ball game.
- 5:08Now let's take a quick look at the starting lineups.
- 5:12These have been selected by the ball clubs, the ball players themselves.
- 5:18Tommy Davis will lead off of the Dodgers. He'll be in left field.
- 5:22Hank Aaron of the Braves will be in right field hitting second.
- 5:27Batting third at first base will be Bill White.
- 5:30The squads are going to be introduced right now,
- 5:33and we'll go along with what we're doing here,
- 5:35and they'll come to two or three names,
- 5:37and I'm certain that you'll hear it from into salvation.
- 5:40Alvin Dark has just been greeted.
- 5:42Batting fourth for the National League will be the center fielder, Willie Mays.
- 5:48Ed Bailey of the Giants is the catcher. He'll be batting fifth.
- 5:53Kenny Boyer of the Cardinals at third base hitting sixth in the order.
- 5:57Dick Grode also of the Cardinals at shortstop hitting seventh.
- 6:02Julien Javier will be at second base. He, too, with the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 6:07And the pitcher from the Cincinnati Reds will be Jim O'Toole of the left-hander.
- 6:13Looking now at the American League, they'll lead off with Nelson Fox
- 6:17of the Chicago White Sox at second base.
- 6:20Batting second in center field his first year,
- 6:23first all-star game, Albie Pearson.
- 6:27Batting third, the right fielder Al Kaelin of the Tigers.
- 6:32Frank Malzone will be batting fourth. He's the third baseman.
- 6:37Leon Wegner of the Angels in left field hitting fifth.
- 6:41Of the Minnesota Twins, their great catcher Earl Batty will hit sixth.
- 6:46And the Yankees' sensational first baseman,
- 6:50playing in his first all-star game, Joe Papaton will hit seventh.
- 6:55And Zoilo Versalas in his first will be at shortstop, unnifty man with a glove.
- 6:59And Ken McBride, a right-hander but very similar to O'Toole in equipment,
- 7:04personality and so forth, will do the pitching.
- 7:08Ken McBride, by the way, has been a very good pitcher.
- 7:12Though he's been in two previous all-star assignments last year,
- 7:16he could not appear because of a broken rib.
- 7:18His first year did not get into the ball game.
- 7:20This year will be the starting pitcher.
- 7:23He's been selected.
- 7:28Well, it's pretty tough, you know, for Gene Mark to pick out a man to start a ball game
- 7:32with all the talent lined up here.
- 7:34McBride, Mambo Cat, Fizarro, Raditz, Brandt, Bouton, Bunnings, that's names of that.
- 7:40McBride has had a fine June. He has not lost a ball game since the last weekend of May.
- 7:44And he's won six in June.
- 7:48He's a right-hander.
- 7:51Now Jim O'Toole, a young fellow who was born and raised in Chicago,
- 7:56the son of a policeman there, and Jim O'Toole and the Cincinnati organization
- 8:00has come a long, long way.
- 8:02They laughed a little bit, I think, when it was learned that he put T-H-I-N-K
- 8:07in letters on the fingers of his glove.
- 8:09But he's done that and he's now become one of the great pitchers of the game.
- 8:15McBride was born in Huntsville, Alabama. He now lives here in Claiborne.
- 8:22Warren Spahn is coming out now.
- 8:24Fourteen All-Star appearances for him.
- 8:27And now for the twentieth year. Listen to this one.
- 8:31From the St. Louis Marquos of Phelan's Man Studio.
- 8:39Stand the man.
- 8:44And now, please start your lineups.
- 8:48They'll be now giving the starting lineups.
- 8:50And please let's see you.
- 8:52From the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 8:54Introducing Tommy Davis right at the moment.
- 8:57We've already given you the lineup.
- 8:58We'll give you something about some of these fellows as they come out now.
- 9:01...as playing right for you from the Milwaukee Braves, Hank Aaron.
- 9:08Hank Aaron has been introduced.
- 9:09There has been a slight change in the batting order.
- 9:11But we have it correctly now, I think.
- 9:13But right now, it's a pleasure.
- 9:16I'd like to tell you this, the All-Star baseball game is being brought to you
- 9:20from Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 9:23Now, you know Bob Neal, a really great player, kind out on this field today.
- 9:27And the fellows will keep working on it.
- 9:29They're never satisfied completely with their performance.
- 9:32Well, you said it, George.
- 9:33And that's one reason Gillette has always been the standout in shaving products.
- 9:37They're always pushing ahead with research and manufacturing improvements.
- 9:41Gillette's newest product is cool, refreshing Sunup aftershave.
- 9:45Right now, you can get it free with the purchase of the 150 Gillette Slim Adjustable Razor Set.
- 9:51Sunup gives you the top of the morning feeling, a wonderful sense of well-being that lasts.
- 9:56And its crisp, masculine fragrance makes a hit with the ladies, too.
- 10:00The Slim Adjustable Razor has Gillette's exclusive precision dial with nine different blade settings.
- 10:05One is exactly right for you, no matter what your combination of skin and beard.
- 10:10Fans try Gillette's new Sunup aftershave free with the Slim Adjustable Razor Set at $1.50 plus tax.
- 10:17Or get it free with Gillette's Super Blue Blade 15s at $1 plus tax.
- 10:22Well, George, these spectacular moments of the All-Star Game are here today, and you're sure capturing them for us.
- 10:29Well, I'll tell you, I don't think there's a greater thrill in the world that you can have
- 10:34than the one you get when you see a ballgame start, the first game of the season, the last game of the season,
- 10:38the All-Star Game, the World Series.
- 10:40And looking down there now, as the National League is lined up between home plate and third base,
- 10:45money, all the money in the world could not buy that talent that's there.
- 10:49Those 25 ball players, managers, and coaches, and the same thing will go on the American League side.
- 10:58And I think it's interesting to note, Bob, that Yankee manager, who is the manager of the American League,
- 11:03has been introduced to this Cleveland crowd.
- 11:09Taking a look at the other personnel on the ball club, Sam Mealy of the Clans and Johnny Pesky of the Red Sox,
- 11:16both successful managers will be the coaches. Of course, Ralph Hough, the manager of the Yankees,
- 11:20is the manager of this ball club. Alvin Dark runs the National League club.
- 11:25Gene Locke of the Phillies, last year's National League manager of the year, will coach at third base.
- 11:30And Bob Kennedy of the Chicago Cubs will be working at first base.
- 11:35Now, the umpires are a little different than most of us around the league get a chance to see.
- 11:40Hank Sower of the American League will work back of the plate.
- 11:43Bill Joukowski of the National League at first base.
- 11:46At second base will be Al Smith of the American League.
- 11:49Paul Pryor will work at third. He's of the National League.
- 11:52Now, the difference is that we add two umpires.
- 11:55Don Harvey will work out along the left field line of the National League umpire.
- 12:01And down along the right field line, Bill Haller, who is a brother of a young gentleman who plays in the National League.
- 12:12Kenny McBride and Jim O'Toole, both of them warming up right now.
- 12:17They have just introduced Norm Stebern, the unusual type uniforms.
- 12:22And all the National League ball players have now turned to see Norm in the Kelly Green and Gold.
- 12:27Although Cleveland has a very colorful uniform, a home uniform that is, very colorful,
- 12:34this could be a coming thing in baseball, color being added to the ball parts.
- 12:41You might be interested in knowing in the American League that the oldest man playing in this ball game is Nelson Fox.
- 12:46He's 35. The youngest, Joy Lever Salas, 22, and what a future. A present, really.
- 12:52The heaviest man is Dick Raditz, a fireballing pitcher of the Red Sox. He weighs 235.
- 12:57And the lightest, well, I think you already know, that will be Little Albie Pearson,
- 13:01141 and he's gained six pounds since he started to play baseball.
- 13:05The average age of the American League, 27 years. Average height, six feet.
- 13:09The weight, 189. And that just about tells you the American League story.
- 13:15There are many, many other things that can be said about these ball players.
- 13:20Let's go now to the National League and check the oldest man there.
- 13:25Stand the man, he's 42 years old. The youngest is Ray Culp, he's 21.
- 13:30Drysdale LaTala, 6'6". Mari Wills, the shortest, 5'5".
- 13:35They've introduced Mudcat Grant now, a pitcher with the Cleveland Indians and a good one.
- 13:39And he gets quite an ovation from the fans here.
- 13:45Don Drysdale, Ed Bailey, Johnny Edwards, and Joe Torre, lead in the weight department.
- 13:50Each weighs 205. And Mari Wills is the lightest man on the National League squad, 160.
- 14:03Well, Albie's being introduced right now.
- 14:06Now I suppose that watching Albie Pearson play baseball can certainly be a kind of a lift to those of you who are not born to grow to be six feet tall.
- 14:17Albie has shown that he can do it, and he's done it.
- 14:21Al Kaline, one of the great names in baseball, has just been introduced.
- 14:25The ground crew here, getting that infield absolutely sharp.
- 14:29Big ballpark hole, 73,811 fans.
- 14:33They've seen the great ones play here.
- 14:35The ball can get out, it's 410 feet to center field, 380 in each of the slots in the right center, deep right center and left center.
- 14:42365 in straightaway right center and left center.
- 14:47It's 320 feet right down the line, but then it goes out sharply to a wire fence stretching all the way across.
- 14:55There have been 192 home runs hit in this ballpark last year.
- 14:59They were that many.
- 15:01The Tigers ballpark, Tiger Stadium, saw the most in the league, 208.
- 15:10Minnesota, they hit 194 with that power laden team, and right here, 192.
- 15:18Tricky win, though it does not affect the play itself the most part.
- 15:23You'll find banners in this ballpark, one blowing one direction and one another.
- 15:28And I'm sure that all of us here in this booth, connected with this broadcast, are very much in debt too,
- 15:34in which to compliment those responsible here in Cleveland for all the facilities we have.
- 15:40They're just great.
- 15:47Announcing the umpires now, and they're coming out.
- 15:52John Snyder of the White Sidewalls, they say, is down there.
- 15:57And Duke of the White Sidewalls, note the gray hair that come along the top of his ears.
- 16:04Umpires being announced, the players have returned out of the foul lines.
- 16:10We're just a few minutes away from the start of this contest.
- 16:14Jimmy O'Toole is still warming up.
- 16:19And Ken McBride has finished.
- 16:21The main core color guard in deep left center field.
- 16:29Flag is ready.
- 16:33Jimmy Watkins Orchestra singer, our national anthem.
- 16:52To the bright and bright stars, from the pair of the sky, For them, like we watch, were so gallantly streaming.
- 17:09And Watkins was there for the first thing in the air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
- 17:27Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
- 17:55The flag-blast has sung by Mike Douglas.
- 18:00Let's pause now 10 seconds for station identification.
- 18:07This is WGY telling the radio dial Schenectady.
- 18:16One of the good things I saw as they lined up, and all these ballplayers, there are some years on some and most are young.
- 18:22Only one real, the fellow who's lost most of his hair and really shouldn't, I think.
- 18:27Dick Grote, Dick is only 32 years old, but getting down pretty close to the skin there, but a fine ballplayer.
- 18:36And now ladies and gentlemen, along our 310th station network, the Armed Forces Radio.
- 18:41It's my great pleasure to introduce to you the man of longstanding broadcasting and televising the ballgames here in Cleveland, Bob Neal.
- 18:49Thank you very much, George, and hello baseball fans all around the world.
- 18:54This has been a spectacular moment that the fans of this area have waited for, not only for Cleveland, but all over the United States.
- 19:01Young, old, they're all here to see the wonderful dream game of baseball, the All-Star Game.
- 19:07Ken McBride, who was born in Huntsville, Alabama, who lives in the west side of Cleveland when he's not pursuing the happiness of the Los Angeles Angels,
- 19:16moves out in the direction of the mound. He's a right-hander, and this is his first All-Star Game start.
- 19:22He's 27'6", 195 pounder. He's won nine and lost six for the Angels so far.
- 19:28He is considered by many managers in the American League as being the proud possessor of perhaps the best curveball in the game.
- 19:35Mike Malzone, playing third base today for the Boston Red Sox, is a especially proud gentleman
- 19:41because his lovely wife presented him with a new baby boy this morning, and mother and baby doing well indeed in Massachusetts.
- 19:50So Mr. Malzone indeed probably have a young All-Star all of his own on this very appropriate day.
- 19:57At shortstop is Zolo Versales from the Minnesota Twins. This is his first All-Star Game.
- 20:03He's perhaps the most excited young man in town. Second base, Nellie Fox, who's been around for some time.
- 20:09And first place is Joe Pepitone, who also is a rookie, came up part of last year with the Yankees,
- 20:15and this must be quite an honor for him. In left field, Leon Wagner, who started his career in the National League
- 20:21and who came back from Toronto and with the Los Angeles Angels. In center, Albie Pearson,
- 20:26probably the smallest man to ever play in an All-Star affair, and Al Kailine out in right field.
- 20:32Earl Batty of the Minnesota Twins will handle the catching as McBride takes his warm-up tosses.
- 20:38Hank Soar, played umpire, ready to move in. At first base is Bill Joukowsky of the National League.
- 20:45At second base is Al Smith of the American League, and at third base is Mr. Pryor.
- 20:50So ready to slip in from the Los Angeles Dodgers is Tommy Davis. Davis, a right-hand batter,
- 20:57stands about halfway deep in the batter's box. His feet are fairly close and he strides into the ball.
- 21:02He carries a.327 batting average with the Dodgers. He's hit eight home runs.
- 21:07And the outfield is playing him straight away, the breeze blowing to right center.
- 21:11First pitch, a little low with a curve and it's ball one.
- 21:15Wagner is deep in left. Albie Pearson straight away in center, and Al Kailine away from the line in right field.
- 21:23Left side of the infield backed up. Here's the one-ball delivery. Outside, ball two.
- 21:30Batty working out to the side of the play as Davis, who stands fairly upright, solidly built,
- 21:37holds that bat right on the end. McBride with a two-ball delivery comes down.
- 21:42And a strike catches the outside corner, two and one.
- 21:46The all-star game underway. The breeze is blowing towards right center. It's about 15 miles per hour.
- 21:55Here's the look in, the windup, the two-one delivery. And a ground ball, slow roller. Malzone charging in.
- 22:01Fires across to first and there's one away. Nice play by Frank Malzone on a chopper to the left side.
- 22:07Came in about five steps on the infield grass, got it across to Joe Pepitone and there's one away.
- 22:12As Ken McBride disposes of the first batter from the National League.
- 22:17Here now is a man of outstanding talents. Superlatives would be a little hard to come by to match all of his talents.
- 22:24Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves. Called to Henry by his close friends.
- 22:30Aaron stands in, right-hand batter, looks at the pitch, low outside, ball one.
- 22:35Aaron currently is hitting three-ten for the Braves, has 24 home runs, 63 RBIs.
- 22:41He's a slender bill but a fine ability muscular-wise.
- 22:47Loose wrists and he takes a little outside ball too.
- 22:53Well McBride went to a two-ball count before he was able to get Davis to work.
- 22:58Now let's see how he works now on Henry Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves.
- 23:02Top field around the left, playing him to pull and the short stops deep.
- 23:06As a ground ball, one hopper to Malzone, the third baseman, flips across to Pepitone and is two away.
- 23:11So Malzone and Pepitone have had pretty much the activity.
- 23:15Two up and two down for the National League in the top of the first inning and from the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 23:20Bill White.
- 23:25Bill White started out in life, wanted to be a doctor, got a Bachelor of Science degree,
- 23:30and he has been pursuing a very gainful occupation, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 23:37Takes a swing and fouls it off, strike one.
- 23:42There's no score in the ball game. This is the top of the first inning.
- 23:45Two down for the National League. Bill White started today with a 320 average.
- 23:50And he has 14 home runs for the Cardinals. He's driven in 60 runs.
- 23:53He has power and the American League is pulled around to the right respectfully.
- 23:58Two down, one strike. Here's McBride's delivery.
- 24:01Ground ball foul. Why the first? Goes right by first base coach Bob Kennedy.
- 24:06And the count is two strikes.
- 24:10We've just gotten underway. McBride disposing of the first two men to face him.
- 24:14Tommy Davis of the Dodgers, who bounced out third to first, and Hank Herron,
- 24:18who also bounced out Malzone to Puppetton.
- 24:21Two up, two down, two strikes on Bill White. McBride checks now with Batty.
- 24:27Into the windup and the two-strike pitch coming down.
- 24:30Slow curve is a little too high, one and two.
- 24:35Sun shining brightly. It's about 72 degrees.
- 24:39Perfect day for baseball with some beautiful fleecy clouds up ahead.
- 24:43The one-two pitch. Curve ball fouls it off.
- 24:46Back near the screen comes Earl Batty and it's on the screen out of play.
- 24:51One ball, two strikes. Count remains.
- 24:56McBride changed up a little and gave him a change-up curve ball.
- 25:00Bill White went after it but fouled it back out of play.
- 25:04Two down, nobody on. One ball, two strikes.
- 25:06The All-Star game in Cleveland's Municipal Stadium.
- 25:10Fine crowd on hand.
- 25:14Now McBride will work again with a new ball. Outfield shading just a little to the right for White.
- 25:20Nellie Fox deep near the edge of the outfield grass at second base.
- 25:24One-two pitch. There's a bouncer down to Fox, a second baseman.
- 25:27Flips to Puppetton and the side is retired.
- 25:30Three up and three down for the National League.
- 25:32So at the middle of the first inning, there is no score.
- 25:36Those San Francisco Giants certainly making a strong bid for their second straight National League pennant.
- 25:42And one of the top reasons is Big Orlando Cepeda.
- 25:44He's really blasted some beauties this year.
- 25:46And speaking of Orlando, he's been a Gillette fan for many years.
- 25:50Right now he's going along with millions of other fans for Gillette's special offer.
- 25:54Cool, refreshing sunup aftershave, free, with the $1.50 Gillette Slim Adjustable Razor Set.
- 26:01Gillette Sunup gives you a sense of well-being that lasts, has a crisp masculine fragrance both men and women prefer.
- 26:08Sunup is the perfect way to top off a comfortable shave with the Gillette Slim Adjustable.

- 26:38Nellie Fox will be leading it off for the American League.
- 26:43And Nelson is perhaps the last of the bottle-backed swingers.
- 26:49Mark Kramer was the man who originally got him to switch into it.
- 26:53Nellie's philosophy is that the little man in baseball should not be swinging for the fans.
- 26:57But try and get on and let somebody else push him ahead.
- 27:00The outfield for the National League has moved in tight with the center fielder mazed virtually a deep second base.
- 27:07Davis is in shallow in left and Ahrens backed up in right.
- 27:11First pitch is outside from O'Toole, the left-hander.
- 27:14Jim O'Toole is known as a nervous worker.
- 27:17He likes to walk around and fidget a lot.
- 27:20He's a fine performer.
- 27:22He's won 13 ball games.
- 27:24And he works now with the one ball delivery.
- 27:27Outside with a curve and it's ball two.
- 27:30O'Toole is 26, 6 foot 200 pounds.
- 27:341961, lost two games in the World Series.
- 27:38Hails from Chicago.
- 27:41Two ball delivery.
- 27:42Catches the corner for a strike.
- 27:47Jim O'Toole, as George Bryson pointed out to you in his early days, had think printed across his glove so that he could concentrate.
- 27:56And he is a worker.
- 27:582-1 pitch.
- 27:59There's a little looper hit out of the center field going to drop in for a base hit.
- 28:03First hit of the ball game by Nellie Fox, who plays that bat like a musician, plays that bowl and he just looped one out over second base.
- 28:11A base hit for Fox.
- 28:13The American League gets the first hit of the ball game.
- 28:15And coming up now is the other little man in the game today, Albie Pearson.
- 28:22Albie Pearson, 5 foot 5 and about 141 pounder.
- 28:26Left hand batter against the left hander O'Toole.
- 28:28Outfield remaining in shallow.
- 28:30Fox leads away.
- 28:31White holes against him.
- 28:32Here's the pitch.
- 28:33Too high with a curve.
- 28:34Ball one.
- 28:36The breeze is out towards right center.
- 28:38One of the things not known about Albie very well is he at one time was a fighter.
- 28:42He had some professional fights.
- 28:44He probably had over 100.
- 28:46My, that is interesting.
- 28:47There's Fox leading away.
- 28:49O'Toole checks him and works down to the plate.
- 28:51And he's going to bunt it and he takes it for a strike.
- 28:54The end very fast on the play was Boyer charging in for a possible bunt.
- 29:00Sam Mealy, the manager of the Minnesota Twins coaching at first base, moves in to say something to Fox.
- 29:05Johnny Pesky, the manager of the Boston Red Sox, coaching over at third.
- 29:09And he also is watching the situation.
- 29:12All right, the 1-1 pitch, nobody out.
- 29:14No score in the last of the first inning.
- 29:16There's a high foul cut off near the stands.
- 29:19The breeze will take it out of play over is Bill White and the catcher, Ed Bailey, with no chance.
- 29:25So it's one ball and two strikes.
- 29:27We're scoreless.
- 29:28We're in the last half of the first inning of the All-Star Game from the Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 29:34Nellie Fox, the first baserunner of the ball game, holes close at first.
- 29:39White, a very fancy man with a glove, holding against him.
- 29:43Not too shallow.
- 29:44Here's O'Toole, the left-hander, checking on Fox.
- 29:47Here's the pitch.
- 29:48And he checked his swing and its inside.
- 29:50Started to go held up 2-2.
- 29:52Two balls, two strikes.
- 29:56Ed Bailey, who hails from the unusually named town of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, handling the catching.
- 30:05All right, O'Toole is set.
- 30:07He checks on Fox at first.
- 30:09He's ready to work.
- 30:10And the pitch coming down to Pearson.
- 30:11Tries to hold off.
- 30:12Fouls it back.
- 30:13Out of play.
- 30:14And the count holds.
- 30:15Two balls, two strikes.
- 30:20O'Toole is solidly built.
- 30:22He has big, broad shoulders.
- 30:26In his first year in professional baseball, 120 games.
- 30:32No score in the ball game.
- 30:33Nellie Fox, the baserunner, leads away.
- 30:35White holds against him.
- 30:36O'Toole, the left-hander, ready to work on the 2-2.
- 30:38Down she comes.
- 30:39There's a base hit over the head of Bill White.
- 30:41Hanging out in the corner.
- 30:42Aaron coming over as Fox goes on for third.
- 30:44Pearson makes the turn and holds as the throw goes into second base.
- 30:49Bouncing ball.
- 30:50It bounced high over the head of Bill White.
- 30:52He had no chance for it.
- 30:53He could have been on a ladder and not been able to reach it.
- 30:56It took a very high bounce over his head and went down the right field line.
- 31:00So the American League now has a runner third, a runner first.
- 31:03And Albie Pearson drills a single.
- 31:06And Nellie Fox moves around the third base.
- 31:09Two men on, nobody out.
- 31:11And Al Kaelin the batter.
- 31:15Kaelin, the fine outfielder of the Detroit Tigers, who can do everything,
- 31:19stands deep right-hand batter, waiting on O'Toole, who checks the runners at third and first.
- 31:24Pitch, big curve outside ball one.
- 31:28Kaelin suffered a muscle spasm in the back of his right leg.
- 31:32On Saturday, but despite that, he's here.
- 31:35Great honor to be selected and he's living up to his magnificent standard as a professional baseball player.
- 31:42Here's the check on the runners.
- 31:43O'Toole comes down with a pitch.
- 31:45There's a fly ball hit into left field.
- 31:47Coming in under it is Davis.
- 31:49Fox tags up.
- 31:50Here he comes.
- 31:51There's the throw coming and it may be close.
- 31:53The runner going down.
- 31:54Here's the play and he's out.
- 31:57Davis threw a magnificent strike into the plate to Ed Bailey.
- 32:00And they got Nellie Fox coming in.
- 32:02Oh, what a throw Davis made to help me Pearson move down to second on the throw into the plate.
- 32:08So no sacrifice fly.
- 32:10And now there's Kaelin.
- 32:11It's a fly ball to left.
- 32:13And Davis' magnificent throw to the plate gets Nellie Fox.
- 32:17No run for the American leg and Pearson on the throw goes to second base.
- 32:21Well, the fans, you can hear them are buzzing.
- 32:24Davis threw himself a shot in there like he'd fired it out of a rifle.
- 32:34The batter now is Frank Malzone, the newest popper.
- 32:39Stands in right hand batter.
- 32:40To the left he works his strike.
- 32:42Fast ball in the outside corner about a letter high.
- 32:44Outfield is pulled around to the left.
- 32:50Davis near the corner.
- 32:52Willie Mays in left center and Hank Aaron well away from the line in right.
- 32:56He's way over by the right center field area.
- 33:01Javier, the second baseman back near the edge of the grass for the National League wide away from the bag.
- 33:07Malzone waits on the one strike pitch.
- 33:09Look back to second.
- 33:10Here she comes.
- 33:11Foul back and it's strike two.
- 33:18Well, the American League fans in the Cleveland area who do not have an opportunity to see too many of the National League stars are still really buzzing over their throw made by Davis to the plate.
- 33:32And they got Nellie Fox, I would say rather easily.
- 33:37Two strikes to Malzone, a runner on second for the American League, no score.
- 33:41American League has had two hits.
- 33:44Here's the check by O'Toole.
- 33:46Back to Albie Pearson and the pitch coming down.
- 33:49Outside, fastball, one ball, two strikes.
- 33:56Malzone was tempted but held off.
- 33:59Frank is having one of the fine years of a very bright Major League career.
- 34:06And Miele motioning out to Albie Pearson, the base runner at second.
- 34:11Two out, no score, one ball, two strikes, last of the first inning.
- 34:15Here's the pitch.
- 34:16Outside, ball two.
- 34:19Oh, it's two balls, two strikes.
- 34:27Albie Pearson taking a very short lead from second base.
- 34:32As you know, the entire St. Louis Cardinal infield, as Boyer at third, Groat at short, Javier at second, and Bill White at first.
- 34:41Here's a little looper going out in the left center field, might drop in, going out as Groat, and he's got it.
- 34:45Fine play by Dick Groat, running away from infield, grabbed that one.
- 34:49So the American League does not score, and at the end of the first inning, there is no score.
- 34:57You know, thousands of fans at this historic All-Star game today are keeping their own scorecards
- 35:02so they can relive every thrill in the days to come.
- 35:05Now just imagine running out of ink in the middle of a big inning.
- 35:08You'd really be out of luck.
- 35:10But now with the famous Papermate Piggyback Pen, because the Piggyback Pen carries its own spare refill,
- 35:16when you run out of ink, you simply unscrew the cap, reverse the sections inside, and in seconds, you're ready to write again.
- 35:23You see, the Piggyback Pen has two points, two ink supplies, a Papermate exclusive.
- 35:29You never have to worry about running out of ink.
- 35:31Like all Papermate pens, the Piggyback positively won't skip.
- 35:34It even writes over butter.
- 35:36And it's unconditionally guaranteed to perform, or we replace it free.
- 35:40So don't take a chance in running out of ink.
- 35:42Get a ball game or anywhere.
- 35:44Get the world's only pen with a built-in spare refill, the Papermate Piggyback.
- 35:49Get a Papermate Piggyback in a variety of color combinations, only $1.69.
- 35:57Fans have seen some real thrills in the early moments of this game.
- 36:01I'm caught by Dick Grode of a little bloop where they looked like he was headed out there.
- 36:06And here now, as we move to the top of the second inning, no score is Willie Mays.
- 36:11Ken McBride retired the first three men to face him on bouncers to the third baseman.
- 36:16Mays looks at a fastball outside of ball one.
- 36:23The outfield is shaded around to the left for Willie.
- 36:26McBride ready, the one-ball pitch.
- 36:28Curve is low.
- 36:29Ball two.
- 36:35Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants hitting 271.
- 36:39He's got 16 home runs and 41 RBIs.
- 36:42The two-ball pitch.
- 36:43Strike on the outside corner, just above the knees.
- 36:47McBride has gone to three hitters so far with a two-ball count
- 36:51and then has come back together with a three-ball.
- 36:54He's got a two-ball count and then has come back together.
- 36:59On deck is Ed Bailey of the San Francisco Giants.
- 37:01Here's the pitch outside ball three.
- 37:05Three balls and a strike.
- 37:07Ken McBride, lad from the west side of Cleveland,
- 37:10pitching for the Los Angeles Angels and the American League,
- 37:14facing Willie Mays.
- 37:15Three-one pitch coming down.
- 37:18Missed ball four.
- 37:19So the National League has its first baserunner in the person of Willie Mays.
- 37:23Dangerous man anytime on the bases.
- 37:26And up now is Ed Bailey.
- 37:33Bailey, of course, has played in Cleveland
- 37:36since the Reds and the Indians combined in the San Lofa baseball benefit program.
- 37:43Bailey came on to Cleveland and so he has seen this ballpark.
- 37:48So Bailey a left-hand batter with Willie Mays jumping off to a good lead.
- 37:52Joe Pepitone of the Yankees, the first baseman for the American League,
- 37:55holds against him.
- 37:56Here's the stretch and the pitch.
- 37:57Little low inside, ball one.
- 37:59Batty keeping an eye on Mays.
- 38:03Bailey hitting 250 for the season in the National League so far
- 38:07has 13 home runs, 39 RBIs.
- 38:09Mays again jumps off to a lead.
- 38:12Outfield is pulled to the right for this left-hand batter.
- 38:15Here's the check on him and the pitch.
- 38:17And he checked his swing and it's ball two.
- 38:19No score. We're in the top of the second inning.
- 38:22American League has had two hits.
- 38:24National League has its first baserunner in the person of Willie Mays.
- 38:31He drew a walk.
- 38:34Now Ken McBride again looks in for the sign from Batty,
- 38:39checks on Mays about a four-step lead away from first.
- 38:41Pepitone holds against him, throw over, he's back.
- 38:44Bill Joukowsky of the National League, the umpire first base,
- 38:49standing right over the bag.
- 38:51Again McBride stretches, checks and delivers.
- 38:54And he gets it low outside, ball three.
- 38:58Doug McBride has started to dig himself a little hole.
- 39:01He's given up a pass to Mays.
- 39:02He stands 3-0 against Ed Bailey, who checks now with Gene Mock,
- 39:06the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, coaching at third,
- 39:09who has checked with Alvin Dark, the manager of the National League team.
- 39:14Mays again with a shorter lead, three steps, checked by McBride on him.
- 39:19Here's the pitch. Strike called, got the outside corner.
- 39:25Now let's see whether Bailey goes on the 3-1.
- 39:27He's checking with his third base coach, moves back in.
- 39:32Earl Batty catching for the American League,
- 39:34shouting out encouragement to Ken McBride.
- 39:37Mays leads away. There he goes.
- 39:393-1 pitch swung on. Throw down to second base.
- 39:41The tag by Versalys and he's safe.
- 39:45Mays had a big jump on the ball.
- 39:47A good throw by Batty right over the top of the bag.
- 39:50Versalys came in beautifully, tried a backhand swipe at Mays,
- 39:54but this base runner, Willie Mays, I'm sure you heard of him,
- 39:58gets in there safely.
- 40:02Stolen base for Willie Mays.
- 40:04Three balls, two strikes now to Bailey.
- 40:06National League with the runner on second.
- 40:08Nobody out, no score.
- 40:10Now field to the right. Here's the check and the pitch.
- 40:13Foul, back out of play.
- 40:18Willie Mays had picked up three stolen bases in all-star competition.
- 40:22This is his fourth.
- 40:24Thank you, George.
- 40:26Kind of exciting to watch Willie, George, even when he just stands there.
- 40:31You keep expecting something.
- 40:33I guess he's a perfect ball player. He has everything.
- 40:35Willie looking into the plate, three-two pitch coming down.
- 40:40And it's ball four and it Bailey draws the walk.
- 40:43And the National League now has a runner on second, a runner on first.
- 40:46And nobody out.
- 40:48So Ken McBride has given up two walks.
- 40:52Up now is Ken Boyer.
- 40:56Brother Cletus is the third baseman for the New York Yankees.
- 41:01And when you talk to one of the Boyer brothers, he always wants to tell you about the other one.
- 41:06Ken, with the Cardinals, hitting 3-0-2, has eight home runs, 52 RBI.
- 41:11A fierce competitor and certainly a fine all-star.
- 41:15Stands in, right-hand batter, feet fairly close together.
- 41:19And McBride gives him a curve and he pops it to the right side.
- 41:22The infield fly roll will be in effect.
- 41:24Nelly Fox calling for the ball. He has it and one away.
- 41:28One down, two on, no score.
- 41:31We're in the top of the second inning.
- 41:34Up now is Dick Groat, formerly of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 41:41Now the captain of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 41:46And a very inspirational leader.
- 41:50Dick Groat so far on the year is hitting 3-26.
- 41:53He's had five home runs, 40 RBI's for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 41:57The right-hand batter stands with his feet fairly wide apart over a closed stance.
- 42:02Here's the pitch. Fastball strike on the inside corner.
- 42:08Willie Mays, the base runner on second.
- 42:10Ed Bailey, the runner first.
- 42:12One out, one strike, and Groat the batter.
- 42:17Groat hits to almost every field and he rarely strikes out.
- 42:20Versalli's trying to keep Mays close.
- 42:22Here's the pitch. Ground ball left side. Malzahn can't get it.
- 42:25Here's Willie Mays going around third.
- 42:27He's come on to score as Wagner throws in the third.
- 42:30Boy, that ball had eyes as it went beyond the reach of Malzahn.
- 42:34Versalli's tried for it and he couldn't get to it and rolled out into left field.
- 42:39So the first hit for the National League is Dick Groats.
- 42:42The first run of the ball game goes to the National League as Willie Mays comes on to score.
- 42:46Bailey holds it second base.
- 42:50Run batted in for Groats and Julian Javier, second base from the St. Louis Cardinals, right hand batter.
- 42:58That's out of a slight crouch.
- 43:00That close together wide stance.
- 43:02Ken McBride checks the two runners.
- 43:04Here's the pitch. Here's a drive deep in the left field of a state's fair.
- 43:07It is curving and it is a foul ball.
- 43:13Boy, that didn't miss by much.
- 43:17This is Javier's first all-star game and he had some ideas.
- 43:22He's a very slender build and apparently is loaded with power.
- 43:30So Julian Javier hitting 270.
- 43:32He's hit five home runs for the cards, has driven in 22 runs.
- 43:41The outfield playing straight away.
- 43:43It's the National League one, the American League nothing as we play in the top of the second one out.
- 43:48Here's the pitch and it's a strike.
- 43:50Curve ball top the outside corner. Strike two.
- 43:54We were checking some of these players last night on the pronunciation of the names.
- 43:59And Julian getting us about the J being sort of an H in Spanish.
- 44:06Somebody asked him if he had a son if he'd call him Hoonier.
- 44:09Two strike pitch is a curve strike free. Big curve ball started at him, broke over.
- 44:16So the first strike out goes to Ken McBride as he gets Julian Javier.
- 44:21And it brings up Jim O'Toole.
- 44:23O'Toole is no automatic out.
- 44:27He drives himself as most pitches do on his ability to swing that bat.
- 44:32You got the bill of a hitter and up he comes from the Cincinnati Reds, their fine left-hander.
- 44:38Jim O'Toole.
- 44:44We're starting to get a little activity in the American League bullpen as Jim Bunning is up and starting to throw.
- 44:50Here's the stretch now, the pitch coming to O'Toole. A foul back, not a play. Strike one.
- 44:56Two down, two on. National League leads one to nothing.
- 44:58Willie Mays drew a walk, stole second.
- 45:01Bailey walked. Boyer popped to the second baseman.
- 45:04Groat, with a single between the shortstop and the third baseman, brings in the first run of the game.
- 45:13Now Ken McBride checks with Earl Batty.
- 45:16Ed Bailey, the runner, in second.
- 45:18Dick Groat, the runner, in first. Here's the pitch. Outside, fastball, one-one.
- 45:26Bright day for this great affair.
- 45:31Large, fleecy clouds out over Lake Erie.
- 45:34As you know, the Municipal Stadium of Cleveland is on the shores of Lake Erie.
- 45:39And the breeze is slight.
- 45:41Here's the one-one pitch. Ground ball to the shortstop.
- 45:43Versalys has it, goes to Fox for the force on Groat coming over.
- 45:47And so the National League picks up a run.
- 45:50Middle of the second inning. The score, National League won the American League nothing.
- 45:55These All-Star games are usually pretty tight battles, aren't they, George?
- 45:59Well, they sure are, Bob, except for 1946. Remember that one?
- 46:02The Americans jumped to the two-nil lead in the first egg and kept on going to a 12-0 win.
- 46:07Yes, they had the stuff it takes to stay out in front. It's like Gillette.
- 46:11They've got the research and manufacturing skill that produces superior men's products.
- 46:17Gillette Right Guard, for example, the country's leading power spray deodorant, gives 24-hour protection in just two seconds.
- 46:24Its cool, refreshing mist dries on contact, gets right through for complete protection against odor.
- 46:30Seventy-nine cents. Or the new Economy King size for only a dollar.
- 46:34Another Gillette winner is extra-rich Foamy Instant Lather that keeps your beard drenched through the entire shave.
- 46:40It gives you a refreshing lift, a clean, cool shave every time, with K-34 antiseptic to kill harmful facial bacteria.
- 46:48Gillette Foamy, 79 cents, with a giant economy size, only 98 cents.
- 46:58That's not like warming up the picture that time.
- 47:02Oh, too, was Mari Wills of all people.
- 47:05Well, that's unusual, but that shows the great ability of these art all-stars and their desire to get in the game somehow, doesn't it, George?
- 47:14Here's Leon Wagner, powerfully built left-hand batter against the left-hand road tools, swings and misses.
- 47:23Wagner had himself a wonderful year last year with the Angels, and he's having another fine year this year.
- 47:30He's been the scourge of American League pitchers. He can really bang that baseball.
- 47:35Hit 20 home runs, takes outside, curveball down low.
- 47:4059 RBIs for Leon Wagner in a 330 batting average. He's one of the top 10 in the American League.
- 47:46Outfield straightaway for him, breezed, blowing towards right center field.
- 47:51Here's the 1-1 pitch. Fastball cut the corner at the knees, and it's one ball, two strikes.
- 47:58Leon Wagner's one of the very few ball players in baseball who hit with their hands apart an inch or so on the bat, and he's a pretty fair bid for the triple crown.
- 48:08I should say, here's the 1-2 pitch by O'Toole. Fastball foul back out of play.
- 48:15And an all-star souvenir has just gone into the stands.
- 48:30One ball, two strikes. National League leads 1-0. This is the last of the second inning.
- 48:36Here's a little line drive, hit out over the head of the third baseman, base hit as Wagner reached out and swept that ball in the left.
- 48:50Well, the American League has picked up its third hit, although it has failed to score a run.
- 48:56And Jim O'Toole now will have to face Earl Batty, the catcher of the Minnesota Twins.
- 49:08Here's the stretch, the check on the runner. Here's the pitch to Batty. Takes high, ball one.
- 49:17National League converting two bases on balls, a stolen base, and a single to pick up a run in the second inning.
- 49:24American League had two singles in the first, but couldn't score as Davis came up with a great throw from the outfield.
- 49:30Pitch to Batty, outside, ball two. O'Toole now, 2-0, two balls, no strikes.
- 49:38Jim Bunning was loosening up, while the National League was at bat.
- 49:43There's a foul, and it's two balls and a strike.
- 49:59Two balls, one strike. Nobody out. Here's Earl Batty standing in against the left-hander Jim O'Toole.
- 50:05Outfield has swung around to the left for him. Sun shining brightly, O'Toole checks now on Leon Wagner, the baserunner.
- 50:12Two-one pitch, and a strike call. Started the curve way outside of this right-hand batter.
- 50:20Larry Jackson of the Chicago Cubs now starting to throw in the National League bullpen.
- 50:27Right-hander, two balls, two strikes. O'Toole again checks on Wagner, the runner at first.
- 50:34Here's the 2-2 pitch, change up curve outside, ball three.
- 50:38O'Toole was trying to set Batty up. Earl Batty wears a sort of side cover on his helmet.
- 50:49Protection against any additional blow is about two years ago.
- 50:553-2 pitch by O'Toole as he checks on Wagner, comes down.
- 51:00There's a solid smash in the right center field, going back out there's air near the fence, and he hauls it in.
- 51:06And back to first base goes Leon Wagner. Ball hit hard by Earl Batty, but Henry Aaron over there in the corner and right center field, hauls her in for a long out number one.
- 51:17One away. Up now is Joe Pepitone.
- 51:24Joe Pepitone is really just a few years away from playing in school.
- 51:29And last year as a rookie was up with the Yankees for a while. This year is first full year honored by his peers as the American League's first-priceman.
- 51:39277 average left-hand batter. O'Toole checks on Wagner, delivers. There's a slash foul into the stands in left field.
- 51:47Pepitone has hit 14 home runs already in the American League, has driven in 44 runs.
- 51:55Very fancy young fellow with a glove. Most people are greedy. He has a great career ahead of him.
- 52:04One strike in the pitch. Curve ball, pounded fouls right side going off against the facing of the temporary box seats.
- 52:11Two strikes now to Joe Pepitone.
- 52:14National League leading 1-0. This is the last of the second inning.
- 52:27Joe Pepitone facing O'Toole. And he struck him out through a fast ball right by. Strike two.
- 52:35And that is a strikeout for the American League, a strikeout for the National League as Jim O'Toole gets his first strikeout.
- 52:45Ken McBride gets up his first in the second. And the score, National League 1 and the American League nothing.
- 52:53Here's Zolo Versalis, whose name to his first All-Star game. Right-hand batter crotches over that plate, hands up well away from his body.
- 53:02O'Toole the left-hander hits him with the pitch and on the first base goes Versalis. On the second goes Wigand.
- 53:08So Versalis becomes the first hit batsman of the game. His arms start to hang out over that plate.
- 53:15He pulled back with the breaking ball. Looks like a slider got him. His manager, Sam Healy, who is the first base coach, is checking on him.
- 53:22So Ken McBride now comes up. Two out, two on. National League leading 1 to nothing. This is the last of the second inning.
- 53:35The American League has had three hits. The National League has had but one, but the National League has the run.
- 53:40The outfield is fairly shallow in all fields. Straight away O'Toole, the left-hander checks Wigand to the runner at second, delivers.
- 53:48Too high. Ball one.
- 53:53Willie Mays guiding the other members of the National League outfield. He's got Davis over a little in the corner and left.
- 54:01Aaron almost straight away and right. Here's the check on the runner's bio, O'Toole, the one-ball pitch.
- 54:06Right. Went after the curve and didn't get it. One-on-one.
- 54:14Ken McBride, the pitcher, facing Jim O'Toole, the left-hander working for the National League in the last of the second inning.
- 54:221 to nothing. National League leads. Here's the check by O'Toole and the one-one pitch. Comes down.
- 54:28Bouncer, slow roller, left side. Rolling foul.
- 54:33So back comes Ken McBride. It's one ball, two strikes. Two out and two on.
- 54:45Breeze has diminished somewhat, although it's still flickering out towards right center field. A perfect day for baseball.
- 54:51Fans being treated to the best of both of the major leagues here in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 54:57One ball, two strikes. O'Toole ready. Works the pitch. Curve ball. And it gets by the third baseman and a run comes to a score.
- 55:04Here's Wagner coming on. Davis up with a ball, throwing in the third base. They throw down a second on the slide by McBride and he's safe.
- 55:15So Ken McBride slaps the singles through the left side, enabling Leon Wagner to come on the score, tying up the ball game
- 55:26and moving with very alert running was Versaliz who went to third and on the throw to third, the pitcher McBride moved to second.
- 55:35So a run batted in for Ken McBride, who helped his own cause with Edmund.
- 55:44The score is a single. So a good job by Joe Versaliz with alert base running, getting him around to third and McBride alert to the situation of Versaliz moving to third and with the throw going that way.
- 56:00He just picked him up and moved on with a long slide into second base, as given the American League runners at second and third.
- 56:07Two men out and Nellie Fox the batter. Little conference now between Dick Grode and the pitcher O'Toole. The outfield is shallow of course for Fox with the exception of Aaron the right fielder.
- 56:18Fox can pull the ball. Now Bill White moves back to first baseman. Runners lead away. Score tied one and one in the last and second.
- 56:26Here's the pitch. Fastball inside the Fox and it's ball one.
- 56:32Ken Boyer, the third baseman, is playing about two steps off the edge of the grass. He cannot move in too far because he wants to keep Versaliz fairly close at third.
- 56:41McBride leads away at second. There's a little looper hit down the line. Davis is there and he's got it. So Fox lines to Davis and the side is retired but the American League ties it up.
- 56:51So at the end of the second inning, the score is National League won, the American League won.
- 56:58Ran in to Yankee manager Ralph Hough just before the team took the field said he noticed that many of the fellas are already swinging to new Gillette Sunup aftershave.

- 57:57Tommy Davis. Well, we now have a tied up ballgame. The American League with two hits in that inning. A hit batsman was vital to keeping their hopes alive.
- 58:11There were no errors. Two men are left and it's tied up 1-1 as we go to the top of the third. Tommy Davis takes the fast ball low outside.
- 58:19The Dodger left fielder, who was the National League Batting Champion last year with a 3.46 batting area, made a great throw in the first inning.
- 58:32Takes low outside, ball two as Ken McBride works to him. Jim Bunning is up again and throwing in the American League bullpen.
- 58:41Bunning worked on Sunday for the Tigers and McBride is working with three days rest. A solid smash in the left center field.
- 58:52Base hit. Oh, that ball really took off. Davis makes the turn at first in the holes as Albie Pearson fires it into Bersalves, the shortstop.
- 59:00So Tommy Davis drilled one and that is hit number two for the National League.
- 59:08Here's Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves, right hand batter. And Bunning is starting to throw a little harder in the bullpen.
- 59:17He's tied 1-1, the American League with four hits. These All-Stars have played errorless ball. McBride checks on the runner Davis.
- 59:25Here's the pitch to Aaron. Curved low outside, ball one. That field straight away.
- 59:39McBride working for the American League. Checks now and Davis delivers to Aaron. Low inside, ball two.
- 59:48Penn's trying to get these National League sluggers to go for something less than right down the middle of the alley.
- 59:58Aaron works very quietly but can swing that bat. Hits this one, pow. McBride worked him inside and Aaron pulled it over the roof back of third base.
- 1:00:12Aaron keeps that bat well away from his body back and cocked around his right ear.
- 1:00:19Leon Wagner, the left fielder for the American League, backed up near the fence. Albie Pearson over in left center and a big hole open in right center.
- 1:00:26Two balls and one strike now to Hank Aaron of the National League Milwaukee Braves. Tommy Davis, the Dodger, leads away.
- 1:00:33Here's the pitch, a bouncing ball to Marilzone. Goes to Fox for one and can't make the throw.
- 1:00:38Davis in there sort of upset Fox so that he could not get his throw away. He didn't dump him but sort of kept Fox from making the throw.
- 1:00:46Force play. Aaron becomes the runner on the fielder's choice. Play went from Marilzone to Fox. One away.
- 1:00:52Runner first and Bill White the batter. We're in the top of the third and the score is tied. National League one, American League one.
- 1:01:03Tommy Davis, a very fast man and carries 200 pounds in the frame. That's why Nellie Fox sort of stepped out of there.
- 1:01:10Low and in the dirt. Good pickup by Patty. One ball to count. One out. One to one ball game in the top of the third inning.
- 1:01:24White sort of works that bat around like youngster would work a little stick. He keeps it loose. Ball two inside.
- 1:01:34Now White checks in with Gene Mock, the coach at third base for the National League. Moves back in, checks his belt.
- 1:01:41Hank Aaron, the base runner first staying close with Pepitone holding against him. McBride checking with Earl Batty, the catcher, has the sign.
- 1:01:50He checks on Aaron, delivers. There's a swing and a high bouncer. Pepitone grabs it and is going to go to first and he just gets there.
- 1:01:56He looked down to second as if he might throw to Versalys to try and get Aaron.
- 1:02:00Realized that he would not be able to get to speedy Aaron and elected to race to the back. Beat White. White bounces out. Pepitone unassisted.
- 1:02:10There is no sacrifice there. Aaron is moved down to second. And it brings up Willie Mays, number 24 of the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:02:23Two downs. Score tied. One and one. We're in the top of the third. Aaron was a good lead from second. Ken McBride works to Willie and it's high. Ball one.
- 1:02:35Willie Mays has 14 runs in 14 all-star games, hitting 422 in all-star competition. So he's been spectacular.
- 1:02:47Little low, ball two.
- 1:02:55Outfield shades a little to the left for Willie and all of them respectfully deep. Versalys, the shortstop, very deep.
- 1:03:05Hank Aaron with a good lead from second base. Two out, two ball pitch. To her right, caught the corner.
- 1:03:14McBride started that ball about the center of the plate, nipped the outside corner. He broke it down and away from Mays.
- 1:03:24Jim Bunning of the Tigers still working. Here's the next pitch. Low outside. He tried to get him to go for the fastball. Missed with it. Three and one.
- 1:03:35So a big pitch coming up for Ken McBride. Three balls, one strike. Two out, Aaron the runner on second. And on deck is the left-hand batting Ed Bailey.
- 1:03:45Mays walked his first time, upscored the National League's run. Swings and drills a single into left center. Here's Aaron making the turn. The third-hills score.
- 1:03:54Willie Mays makes the turn at first and holds as it struggles into second base. Though Willie Mays drills one. And it's now a two-to-one ball game as the National League goes out ahead.
- 1:04:05Third hit. The National League have made those base hits count. Aaron coming on. Though it was a vital play that the bouncer, Bill White, could not be fielded in time to throw to second for a sacrifice or a force play at second.
- 1:04:24And Aaron as a result of the base hit comes on to score. National League two, American League one. Mays now the base runner and Ed Bailey the batter. He walked his last time up. Ken McBride works to him and he swings and misses. Strike one.
- 1:04:44The outfield is straight away. And the right-hander watches Willie Mays. He's got a pretty good lead, Joe Pepitone. There goes Mays and here's the bat. He will not make the throw. The pitch was low inside.
- 1:04:59Mays looking around. He lost his cap about four feet from the bag. He wondered where the ball was. Ball was down low. Baddy grabbed it and decided not to make the throw. For fear he'd throw it away. One and one now with two out.
- 1:05:18Willie Mays with a good lead from second. Here's the pitch. Here's a base hit in the right field. It's going to go through. Here's Mays making the turn at third as Albie Pearson is up with the ball and throws into second base.
- 1:05:29So Bailey rips one into right center field. And the National League goes ahead three to one on only four base hits.
- 1:05:42In comes Willie Mays after making it to second base brought home by Bailey's single. And a run batted in for Bailey. Two out and Ken Boyer, the third baseman from the Cardinals who popped to the second baseman in the second inning. McBride works to him and gets a strike over the outside corner.
- 1:06:11The base hit by Willie Mays gave him his 20th hit which ties him with Stan Musial for greatest number of hits among present company in all-star competition.
- 1:06:27So it's two strikes now to Ken Boyer. Outfield is shaded around to the left a little bit. The runner at first base is Ed Bailey. Boyer waits now as McBride delivers a curve way outside. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:06:47So the National League started to go to work with two out. These have been scorching singles. There's not been any home runs. Three to one, the National League leads. It's even. There's a big curve outside and it's a ball two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:07:07This is the top of the third inning. The National League three, the American League one. Joe Pepitone, the first baseman playing back of the runner by about two steps.
- 1:07:20Ed Bailey leads away. Ball three outside. Three and two count. Three balls, two strikes. So Ken McBride is experiencing a little trouble. He comes in close with that pitch.
- 1:07:38And these swingers from the National League are banging that ball. Bailey will be going. There he goes. Three, two pitch. Fly ball hit in the left field. Leon Wagner moves in on the warning path. Should have it. And does. And that's all.
- 1:07:54But the National League has picked up two runs and the middle of the third inning, the score is National League three, the American League one. Well again this year, the All-Star game is a top attraction, just like Gillette's special offer.
- 1:08:10Three Sunup aftershave with a purchase of the 150 Slim Adjustable Razor set. Sunup gives you that top of the morning feeling, a sense of well-being that lasts. And its crisp man-style fragrance really charms the ladies too.

- 1:09:15Industrial Bank offers low-cost loans for any worthwhile purpose, and you'll find a ready welcome whenever you care to stop in to talk over your needs.
- 1:09:23It's Industrial Bank of Schenectady at 224th State Street and the Woodlawn Branch with a drive-in window at 1815 State Street in Schenectady. This is WGY Schenectady.
- 1:09:37We have a new battery now. We have Larry Jackson of the Chicago Cubs coming on the pitch for the National League. Johnny Edwards of the Cincinnati Reds will do the catching.
- 1:09:46That's the first changes that we have seen in this All-Star Classic. National League leads 3-1 as we go to the last of the third inning.
- 1:09:55And the first batter to face the right-hander from the Chicago Cubs, Larry Jackson, will be the outfielder from the Los Angeles Angels, Albie Pearson.
- 1:10:06Alvin Dark wanted to have a clarification from umpire Hank Soar of where these fellows might go in the batting order, for I'm sure that the members of the press, instead of knowing how they will bat, and I think that's what's being sent along a slight.
- 1:10:21No, maybe not. Edwards is now heading back towards the dugout. Jackson in the meantime is playing catch with the shortstop. So it may well be that there might have been a change here.
- 1:10:36And Edwards is going back in. Could it be that they're not going to take out the catcher?
- 1:10:44Gotta play three innings. I think you just reminded Alvin Dark that the starters must play the first three innings, and that's what it is. And so back comes Ed Bailey.
- 1:10:56All right, we're all straight away now. Ed Bailey, who had virtually was all set to watch the rest of the game along with us, now comes back out.
- 1:11:08So we're ready to go as Larry Jackson comes on from the Chicago Cubs to take over the pitching charge. Jackson of the Cubs is nine and seven, a right-hander. Works a fast ball outside and high.
- 1:11:21Oh, one. O'Toole worked two innings and gave up four hits. There's a strike. One and one. O'Toole did not walk a batter, and he struck out one.
- 1:11:42He hit one, and he surrendered a total of four hits. He's charged with one run. Here's the one-one pitch. There's a drive foul.
- 1:11:54Boy, Albie Pearson laid a little wood on that ball and lined it into the lower box seats.
- 1:12:04The outfield playing straight away. They are not shallow for Albie Pearson. Here's the one-two pitch by Jackson. Inside, ball two, two and two.
- 1:12:18Alvin Dark had sent Edwards out. Of course, these managers want all of these young men to play. Here's the two-two pitch.
- 1:12:25There's a looper foul curving down near the stands, racing over as Davis, but no chance. Out of play. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:12:37Managers want to give every opportunity to all of these young men who have been selected to get into the game.
- 1:12:43The two-two pitch coming to Pearson. Bouncer foul going into the American League dugout.
- 1:12:51That one got one of his associates down there in the dugout who just shouted, I'm on the same team.
- 1:12:59Two balls, two strikes. The pitch to Pearson. Two high, ball three. Larry Jackson, one of the most capable performers on the mound.
- 1:13:13Another year has started with the St. Louis Cardinals, now doing an outstanding job with the Cubs. Works on the three-two pitch.
- 1:13:20There's a line grab on the left side of field. It's going to be in there for a base hit, chasing after this Willie Mays.
- 1:13:25There goes Alvin Pearson, digging for two. Mays up with the ball, fires it into third, and Alvin Pearson with a double.
- 1:13:38The fans are applauding for two things. One, the power and placement of that base hit by Alvin Pearson that went all the way to the fence.
- 1:13:47And the other, the spectacular fielding by Willie Mays who on the dead run circled around behind Davis at the fence, came up with the ball, came out from behind, and fired it into third all in the same motion.
- 1:14:01The score, the National League three, the American League one. But the American League having a base runner on second hit number five for the American League.
- 1:14:08And here's Al Kailon hit a fly ball to the left. Jackson, the right-hander, works to him with a strike.
- 1:14:19Four hits surrendered by O'Toole. Jackson surrenders a base hit to the first man he faces.
- 1:14:25All right, Alvin Pearson leads away. Here's the look back to him by Jackson and the pitch to Kailon.
- 1:14:30Swings a bouncer foul wide of third, and a happy souvenir.
- 1:14:39The Cleveland Indians have erected some temporary box seats around the front of the normal stands area, and that little fence is shorter than the regular fence.
- 1:14:49And fans, of course, with good exercise, are picking off a few souvenirs.
- 1:14:54Two strikes now to Kailon, stands deep in that box. Jackson looks back to Pearson on second.
- 1:15:00Three-one, the score, National League leads. Three-one pitch, strike, call.
- 1:15:05And Al Kailon called out on strikes as Jackson exploded the curve ball over the outside corner.
- 1:15:12Jackson gets his first strikeout, second registered by National League pitches today.
- 1:15:18Frank Malzone, he popped to the shortstop his first time up.
- 1:15:25Frank Malzone of the Boston Red Sox, hitting.329 as the 12 home runs, 53 RBIs in the regular season.
- 1:15:35Takes low outside, ball one. Ed Bailey remaining in the game, handling the catching.
- 1:15:43And Larry Jackson, who took over the pitching, from Jim O'Toole, working with Albie Pearson, the base runner.
- 1:15:51National League leads three-one as we play in the last of the third.
- 1:15:54Here's the stretch check back to Pearson, the base runner, and cutting over is Javier.
- 1:15:59And all of a sudden, there was almost a pitch. Malzone's hoping the pitch would be made.
- 1:16:05Javier broke over to try a pickoff play on Pearson.
- 1:16:09And now Albie's looking back out towards him.
- 1:16:14One ball pitch, and it's low outside, ball two.
- 1:16:21But for a moment, like Albie was a little frightened by all that commotion back there,
- 1:16:26he was looking in to see what was developing in front of him.
- 1:16:33Two balls a count, one out, one on, and a strike. Malzone tried to check his swing, but it was over and it's two and one.
- 1:16:47The outfield for the National League is playing Frank Malzone well around the left,
- 1:16:51giving him virtually all of the right field area.
- 1:16:54Hank Aaron is in right center, Willie Mays in left center, and Davis around the corner and left.
- 1:17:00Jackson checks Pearson, the 2-1 pitch. There's a little looper hit on the left field.
- 1:17:04That's going to be a base hit. Here's Albie Pearson hitting third. He's going to score. Davis throws in the second base.
- 1:17:09It's 3-2 now. The National League leads.
- 1:17:13So Malzone just stroked that little short looper out into left field.
- 1:17:18Malzone gets a run batted in, and that is hit number six for the American League, 3-2.
- 1:17:24The National League leads, and here's Leon Wagner.
- 1:17:27He stroked a single in the second inning and scored the first American League run.
- 1:17:33So Malzone, celebrating the birth of his new baby boy, gets himself a base hit.
- 1:17:39Wagner, a slow roll to right side. Bill White waiting for it, flips to Jackson, covers, and out at first is Wagner, moving down to second is Malzone.
- 1:17:48Wagner sort of topped that ball up on the handle.
- 1:17:51White made a good play on the ball, electing to let Jackson continue, who had broken from the mound towards first, threw it over to him, and the play goes from the first baseman, White, to the pitcher.
- 1:18:03Malzone moving to second base on the play.
- 1:18:06So the American League has a runner on second, two out, and Earl Batty the batter. He lined to the right fielder, Hank Aaron.
- 1:18:13First time up. Batty, with a very open stance, has his left foot pointed down towards third base.
- 1:18:19He's a right hand batter. Malzone leads from second. Jackson, the right hander, ready to work.
- 1:18:24Here's the pitch. Foul, off into the stands. Strike one.
- 1:18:38That one started in the upper deck, wound up in the lower deck, and the fan that got it did not expect it.
- 1:18:44Two out, one strike, three to two the score. The National League leads by one. Malzone represents the tying run.
- 1:18:50Batty swings and has a base hit and a set of fields. Malzone makes the turn at third as Mance comes up with the ball and he will score. Score is tied 3-3.
- 1:19:02Earl Batty and the Minnesota twins come through with a base hit.
- 1:19:07Off Jackson, his third hit. Jackson now has given up two runs. And here's Joe Puppetone, the free swinging, very capable first baseman of the New York Yankees.
- 1:19:20Not field, moves around to the right. Two out, runner first, score tied 3-3.
- 1:19:26Jackson, the right hander, checks on the runner first batty, works to Puppetone. A swing and a miss. Strike one.
- 1:19:38Bill White playing back of the bag with Puppetone, the batter.
- 1:19:47Joe Puppetone, waiting now, left hand batter against the right hander. Here's the pitch to him. And he swings and he drills one in the right field.
- 1:19:55And when he is there, he makes the catch and that retires the side.
- 1:19:59But the National League gets two runs and at the end of three, the score is tied. National League 3, American League 3.
- 1:20:07Although Brooks Robinson isn't in the lineup at the moment, Casey Stengel rates him as one of the finest third basemen since Pied Trainers.
- 1:20:14Brooks is a pro who plays with the enthusiasm of a kid. He's enthusiastic about Gillette, too, one of our biggest boosters.
- 1:20:22He's already sold on Gillette's newest product, Sunup aftershave.

- 1:21:09We have a new pitcher now for the American League, Jim Bunning comes on the takeover.
- 1:21:15Bunning, who hails from down Kentucky Way, used to when he traveled during the baseball season, would have Bertie Tebbott's living in his house.
- 1:21:27Bertie Tebbott was then the manager of Cincinnati.
- 1:21:30Jim Bunning is 31, he's 6 foot 395 pounder, hails from Fort Thomas, Kentucky.
- 1:21:38And this is the fifth time that Jim Bunning has been selected.
- 1:21:44He's pitched 12 innings, has won one and lost none, has given up only four hits in all that time.
- 1:21:49Dick Grode of the St. Louis Cardinals will face Bunning and here's the first pitch.
- 1:21:57Fastball for a strike.
- 1:22:01Ken McBride, who started, gave up three runs and gave up four hits.
- 1:22:08It's tied three and three as we go to the top of the fourth.
- 1:22:12Grode had a single his last time, takes a curve, big slow curve, started at this batter and then broke over.
- 1:22:20Bunning is a, I guess ballplayers would say, a very difficult man to follow because he throws almost three-quarters sidearm and sort of falls towards first base as he delivers the ball.
- 1:22:31So Grode now moves up a little in the batter's box and Bunning is ready to go with a two-strike pitch.
- 1:22:39Score tied three-three, a real thriller. Here's the two-strike delivery.
- 1:22:44Curve is low outside, one and two.
- 1:22:48Some American League batsmen try to bunt on Bunning, figuring that with his move towards first, if they can bunt the ball towards third, they lessen some of his effectiveness.
- 1:22:59Outfield is shaded to the opposite side for Grode.
- 1:23:03One ball and two strikes, the pitch. There's a fly ball hit into right field.
- 1:23:08K-line is there, moves back a couple of steps, hauls it in and there's one away.
- 1:23:13So Dick Grode is out number one in the top of the fourth.
- 1:23:19Ken McBride, who worked the first three innings, gave up four hits, walked two batters, struck out one and gave up three runs.
- 1:23:27Here's Julianne Javier, second baseman from the St. Louis Cardinals, called out on strikes in the second inning. He's batting in the number eight spot.
- 1:23:37Outfield for the American League has Wagner in left, Albie Pearson in center, and K-line in right, straight away.
- 1:23:44Curve for a strike.
- 1:23:48Bunning, with his very effective sidearm motion, makes his curve doubly effective since he starts it right in at him.
- 1:23:57Frank Malzahn, the third baseman, about even with a bag.
- 1:24:01Zolo Versales of Minnesota, the shortstop, deep. Here's the one strike pitch, fast ball outside.
- 1:24:08One ball and one strike.
- 1:24:11Three to three, the score. Seven hits for the American League, four hits for the National League.
- 1:24:19We've had one double, the rest have been singles. Albie Pearson of the Los Angeles Angels with two hits.
- 1:24:27The one-one pitch. There's a high pop near the mound. Malzahn shading his eyes, moving in as his glass is down and makes the catch.
- 1:24:36That sun is brutal about this time, but Frank Malzahn takes it two down.
- 1:24:41Two up, two down as we play in the top of the fourth 3-3 ball game.
- 1:24:47And we will have Larry Jackson, the batter.
- 1:24:53Larry Jackson. Jackson from the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:24:58The pitcher, that's as he throws from the right side.
- 1:25:05And the outfield is straight away for him, not too deep.
- 1:25:08Swings and he drives one into center field. Albie Pearson is there.
- 1:25:12The little fella straightens away, makes the catch, and that retires the side.
- 1:25:16National League goes down in one, two, three order. At the end of three and a half innings, the score.
- 1:25:21National League 3, the American League 3.
- 1:25:27Bob O'Lo, Veda Pinson just missed making the All-Star team.
- 1:25:31Having a party here, isn't he?
- 1:25:32He sure is. I had a chat with Veda recently, and is he happy about that batting average?
- 1:25:37And another thing he's enthusiastic about is new Gillette Sunup aftershade.

- 1:26:33Last half of the fourth inning, Zylo Versales, the shortstop from the Minnesota Twins,
- 1:26:38playing in his first All-Star game hit by a pitch by O'Toole, stands in against Larry Jackson, the right-hander.
- 1:26:44Here's the arm coming down on the pitch, about a tenth foul. Strike one.
- 1:26:50Boyer came charging in, and that's one of the reasons he's on the All-Star team.
- 1:26:57He really moves. Not feel around the left. One strike pitch.
- 1:27:01Bouncing ball, going through, base hit for Versales.
- 1:27:04Makes the turn at first, but holds as Davis with that great arm throws in the second base.
- 1:27:10So the American League starts off here in the fourth inning with a base hit.
- 1:27:16That's hit number eight. Fourth hit off Larry Jackson, who came on to work in the third.
- 1:27:23O'Toole worked the first two innings.
- 1:27:27And Jim Bunning, the batter. Bunning who took over for Ken McBride.
- 1:27:35Good swinger. That's from the right side, deep in the batter's box, holds that bat well away from his head.
- 1:27:42Boyer looking for a bunt. It is bunted. It's foul.
- 1:27:46So the score tied 3-3. The American League trying to move Versales, a very fast man, down to second,
- 1:27:53with the top of the batting order coming up.
- 1:27:58Now a little exchange among the National League All-Stars.
- 1:28:01Boyer has moved into the cut of the grass at third base.
- 1:28:04Bill White is playing inside of the bag at first, ready to charge in.
- 1:28:09And of course, this is one of the most beautiful plays in baseball, to watch its execution.
- 1:28:14Throw to first, back safely. Close play.
- 1:28:17Bill White throwing that glove down on Versales. Good throw by Jackson.
- 1:28:22One strike and a stretch. Check on Versales. Leads away.
- 1:28:25Here's the pitch to Bunning. And he bunts it along the first baseline.
- 1:28:28Grabbing it is White. Can't go to second. Goes to first, throwing to Javier.
- 1:28:32Sacrifice is good, and Bunning moves Versales to second base.
- 1:28:42So we have a runner on second for the American League.
- 1:28:45Score tied 3-3, and Nellie Fox, who lined to the left fielder and single his first time up,
- 1:28:51and who almost scored in the first inning.
- 1:28:53Would have, except for Tommy Davis, who fired a real strike, you know.
- 1:28:59Jim Bouton of the New York Yankees, starting to throw in the Yankee bullpen,
- 1:29:03and we're about to get some activity in the National League bullpen.
- 1:29:06Versales leads from second as the pitch comes down a buck, down a third baseline foul.
- 1:29:12Fox just dropped the bat, let the bat do the work, and he was halfway down the first baseline.
- 1:29:28Little conference, as Ed Bailey shouts some encouragement out to Larry Jackson.
- 1:29:33The outfield is shallow for Fox, with Willie Mays practically playing deep shortstop,
- 1:29:38and Tommy Davis at deep third base.
- 1:29:42All right, one strike, one out. A runner on second.
- 1:29:44Here's the pitch to Fox. Fouls it back on the screen, and it's strike two.
- 1:29:49Ray Culp of the Philadelphia Philz, the right-hander, goes to work in the National League bullpen.
- 1:29:54Jim Bouton, the right-hander from the Yankees, starting to throw in the American League bullpen.
- 1:29:59Three to three the score. Eight hits for the American League, four hits for the National League.
- 1:30:06Check back on Versales now by Larry Jackson. Pitch to Nellie Fox.
- 1:30:10Down low, nice stop by Bailey, and it's one and two.
- 1:30:19Zoro Zolo, Zolo Versales, open this inning with a single, sacrifice to second by Bunning,
- 1:30:25standing there with a good lead. Jackson checks the sign, checks the runner.
- 1:30:29Here's the pitch, and it's inside. Ball two, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:30:41Nellie Fox, who despite the fact that he's the oldest American League player in this game,
- 1:30:46shows the enthusiasm of a young boy, chokes up on that bat about six inches,
- 1:30:51looks out to Jackson, who's ready to work. Pitch coming down, and he throws bat at it,
- 1:30:56dropped out of the catcher's mitt, now going to third as Versales, and to throw to first, and he's out.
- 1:31:02Strikeout with an assist going down. He didn't see the ball, and Versales moved to third base on the play.
- 1:31:11Ed Bailey could not find that ball, and by the time he had discovered it,
- 1:31:18and the time Fox, who was discouraged by the fact that he had struck out,
- 1:31:22could move on out to throw us to first, but Versales moved to third.
- 1:31:26Two down now, and Albie Pearson, with two hits in two times a bat, stands in against Jackson.
- 1:31:32Here's the pitch. Strike on the outside corner.
- 1:31:42Albie Pearson, the littlest man in the game, a double all the way to the fence in left center,
- 1:31:47and the third, started the American League rally, and is going to butt it and took it.
- 1:31:54Outfield is straight away. Jim Boughton throwing in the American League bullpen.
- 1:32:02Ray Culp from the Philadelphia Phillies throwing in the National League bullpen.
- 1:32:07Larry Jackson now with a two-strike count on Albie Pearson, two outrunner at third.
- 1:32:12Here's the pitch. Down low, one and two.
- 1:32:21Right side of the infield for the National League, well back with this left-hand batter.
- 1:32:26Ken Boyer, not taking any chances on Pearson, is playing even with the bag.
- 1:32:30One-two pitch on the way, and it's too low for ball two.
- 1:32:37Score tied, 3-3. American League have picked up eight hits.
- 1:32:42The National League have four, but the runs are the same, three and three.
- 1:32:48This is the fourth inning, last of the fourth.
- 1:32:54Down low, ball three, as Albie Pearson attempted and then held off.
- 1:32:58The ball broke down and away.
- 1:33:05Three balls, two strikes. Two out, Versalli's the baserunner at third.
- 1:33:10On deck is Al Kailin. Here's Jackson with the 3-2 pitch.
- 1:33:15Down she comes, and it's a ground ball foul.
- 1:33:19Bill White with a good glove comes up with it, but a foul ball.
- 1:33:25Always an impressive sight to take a look at the umpires who, right on the line,
- 1:33:30Hank Saw at the plate, Bill Joukowski at first base,
- 1:33:34Bill Haller of the American League out there along the line.
- 1:33:37Three-two pitch coming down, struck him out, getting a curve ball, changed the speed, got him on it.
- 1:33:43So the American League fail to score in their half of the fourth,
- 1:33:46and at the end of four innings, the score is tied, National League three, American League three.
- 1:34:01You know, Bob, they really have to go something to Matt Stan,
- 1:34:03who's record-parked in the second of all-star games.
- 1:34:06You said it, George. Stan has appeared in 24 straight.
- 1:34:09You just can't beat that for consistency.

- 1:35:08Tommy Davis.
- 1:35:10Well, we have a change in the American League lineup now.
- 1:35:13Bobby Richardson of the New York Yankees has moved in to play second base.
- 1:35:17So here's Tommy Davis leading off against Jim Bunning.
- 1:35:22Ball one outside. Fast ball.
- 1:35:25Score tied, 3-3.
- 1:35:27The American League have been able to pick up eight hits, four hits for the National League.
- 1:35:33Bunning, with his familiar pose, the glove and the hand on the knee,
- 1:35:36works now to wind up the one-ball pitch down low ball two, little inside, two and nothing.
- 1:35:43So Nellie Fox leaves. Bobby Richardson is in at second base.
- 1:35:54Score tied, 3-3, as we play in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:36:00Jim Bunning with the two-ball pitch. Misses ball three.
- 1:36:07Davis has bounced out single, sharply in the left,
- 1:36:11and his excellent throw in the first inning brought this crowd virtually to its feet.
- 1:36:20Three and nothing count.
- 1:36:23Jim Bunning with the three-and-nothing pitch.
- 1:36:26Hits it over, three and one.
- 1:36:29Davis takes a look down to Gene Mock, the Philadelphia Phillies manager,
- 1:36:33coaching at third base for the National League.
- 1:36:38And on the 3-1, we'll see what Tommy Davis decides to do.
- 1:36:46The wind up by Bunning, pitch on the way, and he takes it for ball four outside.
- 1:36:52Bunning gives up a walk, and the National League has a baserunner.
- 1:36:58That is the third base on balls given up by American League pitcher today, Ken McBride,
- 1:37:03who worked the first three-walk maze in Bailey.
- 1:37:06Bunning, who retired the side in order in the fourth, gives up his first walk.
- 1:37:13And up there now is Hank Aaron. He's forced a runner and bounced out.
- 1:37:17He'd like umpire Hank Schor to take a look at the baseball, Earl Batty reaching up.
- 1:37:23And Hank Schor says it's okay. Back out she goes.
- 1:37:31Amazing thing of baseball, it's delivered by these all-star pitchers.
- 1:37:35Travels probably in excess of 100 miles an hour.
- 1:37:38The batter sometimes can notice a little smudge or something on it.
- 1:37:42Here's the stretch, the check on Davis by Bunning, the pitch, and it's outside, ball one.
- 1:37:50Aaron takes a look down to Gene Mock. Score tied 3-3. We're in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:37:57Three runs on four hits, no errors for the National League.
- 1:38:00Three runs on eight hits and no errors for the American League.
- 1:38:03Outfield deep in all positions for Aaron.
- 1:38:05Pitch by Bunning, there's a high fly ball into right center field.
- 1:38:09Albie Pearson is under it and takes it. And there's one away in the fifth inning.
- 1:38:16One down. Up now is Bill White. White the left-hand batter.
- 1:38:21He's bounced out to the third baseman, grounded out to Joe Pepitone, the first baseman.
- 1:38:25He's 0 for 2.
- 1:38:27The outfield naturally with this powerful left-hand batter, swings to the right.
- 1:38:31Richardson in now at second base, moves deep.
- 1:38:35Now is on a cutaway from third in the event of a bunt or a slash on that side.
- 1:38:41Bunning checks on Davis, the runner at first. Pitch coming.
- 1:38:44There's a foul back in the stands, out of play.
- 1:38:52One strike to Bill White. Score tied 3-3.
- 1:38:58Bill White is the first to reach 100 hits of any batsman in either league in this season of 1963.
- 1:39:08He's been stroking that ball for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:39:13One out, one on, one strike. The next pitch.
- 1:39:16He hits a little number to the left side. Malzone coming over, goes back to second.
- 1:39:20The Richardson ball bounces out of his glove. There's Davis going on.
- 1:39:23And White had made a big turn at first, but will get back safely.
- 1:39:28Malzone came in on that number that was hit just to the left of the mound in trying to throw to Richardson.
- 1:39:34He hit him up on the hands, and the ball bounced out of Bobby Richardson's glove.
- 1:39:42Official scores will talk that one over.
- 1:39:47I'm sure White will get on on the fielder's choice.
- 1:39:51Now the question is whether they'll...
- 1:40:00They've charged an error, I believe, to Malzone.
- 1:40:05High and outside, ball one.
- 1:40:11One ball to count.
- 1:40:13Did you hear that, George?
- 1:40:14I didn't hear it, no, sir.
- 1:40:17An error charged to the American League on the play of second base, enabling Davis to go on to third.
- 1:40:29One ball to count, one out, score tied 3-3. First error of the ball game.
- 1:40:36Bill White the runner at first, Davis the runner at third, Lily Mays the batter.
- 1:40:40Here's the one ball pitch, and he fouls it back.
- 1:40:47Blunting not an easy man for a right-hander to hit.
- 1:40:53Culp will undoubtedly come on in the last of the fifth.
- 1:40:57He has concluded his warm-up tosses and has moved near the gateway out in left field.
- 1:41:03The outfield change to the left.
- 1:41:06The 1-1 pitch to Mays, swings and hits the number to the right side.
- 1:41:10Pepiton grabs the ball, is going to the bag, and Davis comes on to score.
- 1:41:17Now, Willie Mays just pushed that ball to the right side.
- 1:41:20Pepiton grabbing the ball, stepped on first.
- 1:41:24And Ed Bailey, who had moved out there, is called back.
- 1:41:27As Willie Mays grounds out to the first baseman, Davis comes on to score, and it's 4-3, the National League.
- 1:41:35And on to second base goes Bill White.
- 1:41:40Mays moves up the runner.
- 1:41:44And here comes Stan the Man Museum.
- 1:41:47Well, you heard it.
- 1:42:15Stan Museum, playing in his 24th game, hitting.323 with that very famous pose of his with a little hula thrown in besides.
- 1:42:26Runner on second, pitches a swing and a miss for a strike.
- 1:42:30The official scores have indicated to us that the error has been charged to Bobby Richardson,
- 1:42:36the error which enabled Davis to go on to third.
- 1:42:404-3, the National League now leading.
- 1:42:45On Willie Mays, bouncer to the first baseman, Pepiton, bringing Davis in from third.
- 1:42:49Pitch to Museo, swings and grabs one in the right field.
- 1:42:52K-line is there, and he makes the catch.
- 1:42:55Line drive to Al K-line.
- 1:42:58So, no one run, no hits, one error.
- 1:43:02And it's the end of four and a half innings, National League 4, the America League 3.
- 1:43:08The first half of today's game has been brought to you by the Gillette Safety Razor Company.

- 1:44:21We move to the last half of the fifth inning, the score, National League Four, the American League Three.
- 1:44:27Now my pleasure to turn this microphone over to the gentleman of the Kansas City A's, Mr. George Bryson.
- 1:44:34Thank you very much, Bob.
- 1:44:38In the last half of the fifth inning, it will be K-line, Malzone, and Wagner scheduled against Ray Culp of the field.
- 1:44:45Culp's a right-hander, very good fastball, throws hard, good slider and curve.
- 1:44:51Johnny Edwards has now come in to catch, Cincinnati catcher.
- 1:44:57And Edwards will be batting in the number nine spot.
- 1:45:00The first pitch down to K-line's a curve, call strike.
- 1:45:03No other changes in the lineup right now. It's still Davis, Mays, and Aaron.
- 1:45:07Boyer, Grohl, and Javier in white.
- 1:45:10Brand-new battery. Culp in the windup. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:45:13K-line bounces it back to the left side of the mound.
- 1:45:16A backhand play by the pitcher, throws the first, got him.
- 1:45:19Nice play. K-line bounces one.
- 1:45:24Passed the mound off to the side of the mound, and Ray Culp went off towards third, backhanded it, and threw him out.
- 1:45:32One out on the fifth, and the score all tied.
- 1:45:35Correction.
- 1:45:38Score is four to three, National League leading.
- 1:45:44Frank Malzone, right-hand hitter, popped out to the shortstop, single score, and a run, and a knock in a run.
- 1:45:49Right-hand hitter, pitches low, ball.
- 1:45:54On Malzone, they play around the left and short, all the way around.
- 1:45:59Dick Grohl to shortstop back in the hole.
- 1:46:02Right-hand hitter, Ray Culp in the windup, delivers.
- 1:46:05A call strike on the hands over the inside corner, so it's now a ball on the strike.
- 1:46:12Score four to three, the National League leads.
- 1:46:15Good ballgame, sparkling plays.
- 1:46:19Willie Mays in left-center field.
- 1:46:21Here's the pitch.
- 1:46:22Heddy's bad on a check swing at the strike, and it's a ball and two strikes.
- 1:46:27One out on the fifth.
- 1:46:31Heddy's going to check the left-hander on the bullpen now, the Houston Colt 45s.
- 1:46:42Culp of the Fills facing Malzone of the Red Sox.
- 1:46:47Ball and two strikeouts.
- 1:46:48Next pitch on the way is a fastball, a bit high, all even out two and two.
- 1:46:59Culp has been a starting pitcher for the Phillies, and some relief.
- 1:47:02Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 1:47:03It's taken a bit low, and we go all the way now, three balls, two strikes.
- 1:47:11They give Malzone all the right field line, perhaps 100 feet of it all the way.
- 1:47:18I think it's a dead-pull hitter.
- 1:47:19Here's the windup now, payoff pitch.
- 1:47:21Curveball popped up back of the plate.
- 1:47:24He's back in the stands.
- 1:47:27Johnny Edwards gave Chase the ball back in the seat.
- 1:47:32Great big crowd here today out in center field,
- 1:47:35Bleacherites enjoying the sunshine, and a good ball game.
- 1:47:38Four to three, NASA League.
- 1:47:46Malzone hanging in there.
- 1:47:47Culp has the sign.
- 1:47:48He's in the windup.
- 1:47:49Here it comes.
- 1:47:50Ball to Schwann hit high to right field.
- 1:47:52Aaron, shading his eyes down with the glasses, makes the catch, two out.
- 1:47:58Two out on the fifth.
- 1:47:59That'll bring on Leon Wagner.
- 1:48:02Wagner, single in the second inning and scored a run,
- 1:48:04first run of the American League, grounded out in the first baseman of the pitcher,
- 1:48:09covering in the third.
- 1:48:11A left-hand hitter.
- 1:48:17Wagner of the Los Angeles Angels, the halo on his hat.
- 1:48:21In the windup now goes Culp, and the pitch on the way to the plate is a slow curve,
- 1:48:24but it's high.
- 1:48:27320 feet down the line.
- 1:48:29Wagner is a right center field hitter.
- 1:48:32Can pull the ball right down the line on occasions.
- 1:48:36In fact, Aaron is playing them over pretty well to the line.
- 1:48:39Here's the pitch.
- 1:48:41Bit high.
- 1:48:442-0 to Caldwell with two gone on the fifth.
- 1:48:46Wagner of the hitter.
- 1:48:50And the score, 4-3, National League leading.
- 1:48:56Here's Culp's next pitch.
- 1:48:57Wagner swings on it and fouls it back here.
- 1:48:59Back of the plate.
- 1:49:01End of the netting, bouncing back down on the field, and the count is now 2-1.
- 1:49:11The pitcher looks around the outfield.
- 1:49:12Willie May is playing Wagner straight away and carrying on a conversation with somebody.
- 1:49:17Willie loves to play baseball.
- 1:49:20Here's the next pitch.
- 1:49:21Swung on a line to right field, a base hit, a bullet hit out there.
- 1:49:25Wagner makes the turn and hangs on as Aaron comes up with the ball.
- 1:49:33That's nine hits now for the American League and brings on a bench hitter for Earl Batty.
- 1:49:38By Carl Yastremski, the left-hand hitter with the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:49:47Carl Yastremski.
- 1:49:50I've been told a personal student of Ted Williams, Williams could see greatness in the batting eye of this young man.
- 1:49:58Runner at first, Yastremski at the plate.
- 1:50:03First one's in the dirt of ball.
- 1:50:07First time, too, that he has been in an all-star game, and there must be a butterfly or two.
- 1:50:13It's a great game, a traditional game.
- 1:50:15Brings all the great stars together.
- 1:50:20Here's Culp in the stretch now, the pitch.
- 1:50:22Two-out runner at first, pitch on the way.
- 1:50:24A little bit low.
- 1:50:27Culp is a bit low here on this one.
- 1:50:31Score four to three, National League leading the American League.
- 1:50:36This is the 34th all-star game.
- 1:50:40Infield around the right, Yastremski can hit the ball anywhere.
- 1:50:46Culp in the stretch, here she comes.
- 1:50:48Kerrbaut hit high in the air down the right field line.
- 1:50:51Bill White, the first baseman in foul territory, gives up now as Javier makes the catch just barely foul.
- 1:50:58Javier, the second baseman, got it in foul territory.
- 1:51:00Retires to the side, fifth inning, no runs on one hit, no errors.
- 1:51:04The man left.
- 1:51:06Score now as we go to the top of the sixth here, National League four, American League three.

- 1:52:59Brooks Robinson is at third base, catching Alston Howard of the Yankees.
- 1:53:10And Jim Boughton is the pitcher and the first pitch on the way to Kenny Boyer.
- 1:53:24Jim Boughton, the right hander of the New York Yankees.
- 1:53:26Bires and the ball is fouled off back of first base going up in the stands.
- 1:53:33Now we have Robinson, Versalas, Richardson and Pepitone in the infield.
- 1:53:36Jastremski, Pearson and Allison in the outfield. Alston Howard the catcher.
- 1:53:40Jim Boughton the pitcher, big right hander of the New York Yankees.
- 1:53:44In the wind up he goes. Now a pitch on the way. Swung on and missed on a breaking ball.
- 1:53:48And it's a ball and two strikes. Score in this ballgame, 4-3 the National League League.
- 1:53:54It's a good ballgame.
- 1:53:57Both managers expressed a great desire to get everybody in.
- 1:54:00Of course, a little tough. Kenny Boyer at the plate.
- 1:54:07Numb for two, hits this one high in the air.
- 1:54:10On the left side, the third baseman Robinson in foul territory makes the catch.
- 1:54:15Boyer out on the pop fly, one gone on the sixth.
- 1:54:19And that will bring on Dick Groat, the Cardinal shortstop.
- 1:54:22Like one of the great things about the game of baseball,
- 1:54:24Groat who was raised in the Pirate Organization,
- 1:54:27tries desperately to beat the Pirates now as a Cardinal.
- 1:54:32He's a right hand hitter.
- 1:54:38Facing the right hand pitching of Jim Boughton of the Yankees.
- 1:54:43Hey, play him short in the outfield. There's a call strike.
- 1:54:46Fastball in there.
- 1:54:55Jim Boughton gets a sign now from Elston Howard.
- 1:54:57In the wind if he goes, here's the pitch.
- 1:54:59And it's a change up, swung on a line foul down the left field line in the seats.
- 1:55:03Pulled the string that time. We haven't seen too many changes.
- 1:55:07In fact, both pitching staffs, predominantly fastball and slider pitchers.
- 1:55:12And one of the real hummers in the American League, Juan Pizarro,
- 1:55:15is warming up in a bullpen.
- 1:55:18Woodishick, both 45s, the National League.
- 1:55:23Here's a pitch outside. Now it's two balls and two strikes.
- 1:55:28He checked out a ball and two strikes on the board.
- 1:55:31One down on the sixth.
- 1:55:36Boughton cranks up, delivers in a hurry.
- 1:55:38Overhand curveball hit on the ground of the third baseman.
- 1:55:40Robinson has it, has to hurry the throw. Got him.
- 1:55:45Well, a great glove man, Brooks Robinson.
- 1:55:47Oh, the league is full of fine third basemen, both leagues for that matter.
- 1:55:50Two out on the sixth and here's Julio Javier.
- 1:55:54Javier, the second baseman of the St. Louis Cardinals, has struck out and popped out.
- 1:55:59They're scored four to three in the National League Leagues.
- 1:56:03Out hit by five hits.
- 1:56:07Two down on the sixth.
- 1:56:10Boughton gets a sign now from Elston Howard.
- 1:56:12The pitch overhand curve fouled off.
- 1:56:15Boughton coming right over the top.
- 1:56:22Johnny Edwards on deck. He's batting ninth in the order.
- 1:56:30Boughton set again. Two down on the sixth inning.
- 1:56:34In the wind up Boughton. Pitch on the way to the plate.
- 1:56:36It's a fastball hit on the ground. Big habit of the shortstop, Versalas.
- 1:56:39Quick throw in the dirt and picked up by Pepitone in time.
- 1:56:43Good play at first base.
- 1:56:45Sixth inning, no runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 1:56:48Score now as we go to the last half of the sixth inning, National League Four, American League Three.
- 1:56:55Oh, but Charlie, there's Bob and Vivian.
- 1:56:57Hey, give you a lift.
- 1:57:00Charlie, a new Plymouth. How's it drive?

- 1:57:20How's the power, Charlie?
- 1:57:21Oh, it goes like a dream.
- 1:57:22I like those bucket seats.
- 1:57:23Well, I myself...
- 1:57:24Charlie, how about the five-year or 50,000 mile warranty?
- 1:57:27Oh, it's a guarantee.
- 1:57:28It's big repair bills, right?
- 1:57:30Yeah.
- 1:57:31And that $550 warning's on all Chrysler Corporation cars, right?
- 1:57:34How's the white flag?
- 1:57:35Tell me about the console.
- 1:57:36Does it come with a stick shift? Okay, okay. Everybody out.
- 1:57:44If you have that many questions, see your Plymouth dealer.
- 1:57:47And stay tuned for warranty details later in the program.

- 1:58:32This is WGY Connected.
- 1:58:38Brand new picture, Howell Woodishick on the cold 45s, left hander.
- 1:58:42On the Houston cold 45s.
- 1:58:45Woodishick will be the fourth National League pitcher.
- 1:58:47It's been O'Toole, Jackson, Culper, Nahaw, Woodishick.
- 1:58:50Howell Woodishick, not easy to see six position.
- 1:59:03About ready to go now, last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:59:07Joe Pepitone, the first baseman, has struck out and lined out.
- 1:59:11Struck out swinging in the second inning.
- 1:59:13So it's Sandhall, Groat, Javier, and Wyatt in the infield.
- 1:59:18The catcher, Johnny Edwards, outfield is Davis, Mays, Aaron Still.
- 1:59:24The left hander, Howell Woodishick, is ready to fix the left hand hitting Joe Pepitone.
- 1:59:29Score's four to three, National League leads.
- 1:59:31Runs and bunts and he fouls it off on the first pitch.
- 1:59:34And the ball going down past Warren Child, president of the National League.
- 1:59:37Sitting in the box right near the National League dugout, directly across the commissioner of baseball.
- 1:59:44Along with the American League contingent, the home team here today.
- 1:59:51A strike to count on Pepitone.
- 1:59:53A wind up by Woodishick, sidearm to Mllo.
- 1:59:55A ball and one strike now.
- 1:59:59Willie Mays playing short center field.
- 2:00:03They play Pepitone straight away in the outfield.
- 2:00:06Around the right a little bit in the infield, the third baseman, Sandhill, in close.
- 2:00:09Here's the next pitch, a bit high.
- 2:00:12Two and one.
- 2:00:17Beautiful day. Gee, you couldn't want a better day for an all-star game.
- 2:00:22Colorful uniforms, beautiful ballpark and fine plays.
- 2:00:26And a close one. Here's Woodishick's next pitch.
- 2:00:29And a swell island missed on a curved ball, two and two.
- 2:00:40Left hand hitter Pepitone, two balls, two strikes.
- 2:00:45Woodishick cranks up and delivers.
- 2:00:48Foul tip, that is, into the glove of the catcher Johnny Edwards at the strikeout.
- 2:00:52Pepitone actually checking his swing.
- 2:00:54The ball flicked his bat and went right into the glove of Johnny Edwards.
- 2:00:58And that'll bring on Zoilo Versalas.
- 2:01:01Versalas, the little shortstop, and the Minnesota Twins, a right-hand hitter.
- 2:01:08Public relations man for the ball club in the winter, and gosh, that's hard to understand.
- 2:01:13Unless a lot of people speak Spanish up there.
- 2:01:16Runs and bun and fouls it back.
- 2:01:18A strike. He can fly. Woodfielder.
- 2:01:22And they kick his name around a little. Zorro, Zoilo, Zoilo.
- 2:01:27He likes Zoilo.
- 2:01:30One out on the sixth, and the score, four to three, National League leading.
- 2:01:35Wind up again by Woodishick. Pitch on the way is low inside.
- 2:01:39Fast ball, one and one.
- 2:01:48Zorro chokes up the bat a little bit, crouches right over the plate.
- 2:01:51Here's Woodishick's next pitch, and it's a curve just missed outside.
- 2:01:55Two and one.
- 2:02:04Enfield talks it up.
- 2:02:06Fellas all know each other and respect the ability of their own teammates and those on the opposition here today.
- 2:02:11The wind up now, the pitch on the way to the plate is low inside.
- 2:02:14Almost hit him on the foot.
- 2:02:16So now it's a three ball, one strike count on Zoilo Versalas who looks down to the third base coach.
- 2:02:22Johnny Pesky, whether the hitter to take is on.
- 2:02:26In the wind up he goes. Here it is.
- 2:02:28He was taking and it's ball four.
- 2:02:32Versalas gets free transportation.
- 2:02:36That is the number one walk issued, I believe, by National League pitching.
- 2:02:42Now here's the third baseman of Baltimore, Brooks Robinson, a right hand hitter.
- 2:02:50Batting in the ninth position.
- 2:02:54Runner at first, one out. Enfield shortened up, possible double player.
- 2:03:00Robinson takes a curve in the dirt.
- 2:03:02One ball, no strikes.
- 2:03:12Robinson, born in Little Rock, lives in Baltimore now.
- 2:03:16Big guy, 6'19", fine third baseman.
- 2:03:19Here's the stretch, the pitch on the way.
- 2:03:21Hit through the middle, across second base into center field.
- 2:03:24Versalas all the way to third.
- 2:03:26Mays coming up with the ball, does not throw.
- 2:03:28So you have there one of the great throwing arms in baseball being tested by one of the great runners in baseball as Versalas went into third base.
- 2:03:38And Mays had lost the battle because he had to come in and get the ball.
- 2:03:43So Versalas is at third.
- 2:03:48Robinson is at first and here's Bobby Richardson, the Yankee second baseman, up for the first time in the ball game.
- 2:03:55Richardson has demonstrated over the years that he's a great hitter in the clutch.
- 2:04:00Witness his success in the World Series.
- 2:04:06National League full run, American League three. American League now has ten hits, National League four.
- 2:04:12Runners first and third and one out, Enfield in the pitch.
- 2:04:16As a ground ball going to the shortstop, he has it over the second. For one throw to first, double play.
- 2:04:23For Richardson, hits into the double play. Grows to Javier de White to end the inning and the threat.
- 2:04:28Sixth inning produces no runs on one hit. There were no errors and a man left.
- 2:04:34So at the end of the sixth inning, the score, National League four, American League three.
- 2:04:39Why is Valiant the best all-around compact anyone's come up with yet?
- 2:04:43Here are just a few reasons. A choice of two engines, the Pepe Economical Standard and the hot performing 225.
- 2:04:49Lasting value with rust protected, rugged, one-piece body.
- 2:04:53And your Plymouth Valiant dealer has low, low price tags right now.
- 2:04:57Remember, Valiant has the first and only five-year or 50,000 mile warranty.
- 2:05:01Yours only on cars from Chrysler Corporation.
- 2:05:04For more information on the warranty, stay tuned to the station.
- 2:05:07It's getting late. See your Plymouth Valiant dealer right now.
- 2:05:15We'll get out of the seventh inning and see what changes we have. We have a new pitcher coming on. That much we know.
- 2:05:24Juan Pizarro, Chicago White Sox. Pizarro, National League for a long time.
- 2:05:33Moved to the American League and he's become a fine pitcher. He throw very hard.
- 2:05:37A left-hander with really a blazer.
- 2:05:41Smoke, as they call it in baseball. Luis Aparicio has gone in to play shortstop.
- 2:05:56Now Pizarro will be batting in the number four position.
- 2:06:04Heading in eighth in place of Rosales will be Luis Aparicio.
- 2:06:13And I suppose that fans who have followed the career of this young man over the years,
- 2:06:19well the White Sox were startled a little bit when he went over to another ball club, Baltimore, but he's done a fine job.
- 2:06:31Quick hands, enjoys the game. Johnny Edwards now coming on the seventh inning.
- 2:06:39He's a left-hander with the Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:06:50Pizarro ready to throw the first one up there and he does. It's a fastball over the outside corner.
- 2:06:56We have now McBride, Bunning, Bowden and Pizarro. There's a pitching staff right there if you owned it.
- 2:07:03Next one on the way, slow curve that misses outside. Edwards a little anxious, almost went for that ball.
- 2:07:10Brooks Robinson, Luis Aparicio, Bobby Richardson and Joe Pepitone in the infield.
- 2:07:14The Ostrimsky-Pearson, Allison in the outfield. Next pitch, ground ball hit down to the second baseman Richardson up with it.
- 2:07:20Tosses the first in time one out. So Edwards out on a bouncer, Richardson to Pepitone and that'll bring on Tommy Davis.
- 2:07:29Tommy Davis made a great throw in the ball game early. Flagger runner at the plate. He's a right-hand hitter.
- 2:07:35He's one for two on this one. He's grounded out, he's singled and he's walked and he's scored a run.
- 2:07:45Pizarro gets the sign from Elston Howard. End of the windup he goes, here it is. It's high and away, the fastball.
- 2:07:58Score four to three, National League Leagues the American. And we're in the seventh inning on a beautiful day.
- 2:08:03Pizarro cranks up, slow curve, line foul down the left field line.
- 2:08:13So now it's a ball and a strike on the right hand hitting Tommy Davis of the Dodgers.
- 2:08:20One ball, one strike. The windup, pitch to the plate, slow curve, fouled off.
- 2:08:24Got him way on the front on the front foot that time. But Tommy Davis is strong.
- 2:08:30Sometimes off balance can hit the ball a long, long way for you.
- 2:08:36Ball and two strike count, one out on the seventh.
- 2:08:43Pizarro gets the sign from Elston Howard, throws the ball, it's hit high into the air in the left center field.
- 2:08:49Albie Pearson calling for it and he's got it.
- 2:08:55Davis out on a very high fly ball to center field, two gone now. And that brings on Henry Aaron.
- 2:09:03Aaron is grounded out, safe on the field of his choice, scored a run and was out on a fly to center field.
- 2:09:10So now with two out on the seventh, the score four to three, National League Leagues.
- 2:09:15Pizarro, the left-hander delivers. Slow curve, call strike.
- 2:09:21The slow curve from Pizarro is kind of a favor.
- 2:09:28Boy, he can blaze. Here's Pizarro's next pitch, slow curve again, call strike two.
- 2:09:34So now we have the battle of Pizarro with the known fastball and the ex-teammate of Henry Aaron.
- 2:09:40And Henry looking at two slow curves. They'll talk about that later, you can bet on it.
- 2:09:45Oh, two pitch. He fastballed them way outside, just showed them that one.
- 2:09:50Gene Mox is, come on Henry, down at third base.
- 2:09:56He's coaching down there, last year's National League Manager of the Year.
- 2:09:59The wind up by Pizarro, fastball a bit high. Oh, and he hummed that one, two and two.
- 2:10:05Probably the fastest man we've seen here today, at least that pitch was thrown harder than we've seen.
- 2:10:11Two balls and two strikes, two out. In the seventh inning, and Pizarro delivers.
- 2:10:16Slow curve, hit high at a center field, Albie Pearson should get it.
- 2:10:20He's over there now, and he's got it, and the side's retired.
- 2:10:25So in the seventh inning, it's no runs, no hits, and no errors.
- 2:10:28And the score now is, we'll go to the last half of the seventh, National League Four, American League Three.
- 2:10:36Whenever you buy a new automobile, there are two important points to consider, the car and the dealer who sells it.
- 2:10:42That's why so many people are beating a path to their Plymouth Valiant dealers.
- 2:10:46For Plymouth, on the move in 63, and on the move right now with the best buys of the year.
- 2:10:52For Valiant, best all-around compact anyone's come up with yet.
- 2:10:56And for Certified Car Care, your Chrysler Motors Corporation dealer's health plan to prolong the life of your car.
- 2:11:04That's where the dealer comes in. His men are trained in certified car care techniques of servicing and maintenance.
- 2:11:10They have the right tools, specially engineered for Plymouth and Valiant cars.
- 2:11:14They have the right parts, factory approved parts, to keep your car running like clockwork.
- 2:11:19And they have the Certified Car Care plan itself, a program that gives you a written record of the care your car receives.
- 2:11:26So if you're on the market for a new automobile, think of the car and the man who will service it.
- 2:11:31Think about Plymouth, Valiant, and the dealer who gives you Certified Car Care, yours only with cars by Chrysler Corporation.
- 2:11:38In this last half of the seventh inning now, we'll have Albie Pearson, Bob Allison, and the pitcher scheduled.
- 2:11:48Albie has done all right here this afternoon. He's single and he has doubled. He's scored a run and he struck out swinging.
- 2:11:55Little center fielder, Albie Pearson.
- 2:11:59Howe Wodashick, hole 45, left-hander, will do the pitching now to Albie in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:12:08American League trails by a run. They've had opportunities.
- 2:12:12Next pitch is a strike.
- 2:12:15Bell high with the outside corner as Albie bluffed a bunt.
- 2:12:19And that brought Ron Sato, the third baseman, up in a hurry.
- 2:12:22Ron right now rearranging some of the soil out there halfway towards the plate.
- 2:12:28Strike to Cowan. Albie leans over the plate. Here's the pitch to him.
- 2:12:34And it's hit back to the glove of the pitcher Wodashick.
- 2:12:37Throw him out of first base.
- 2:12:39Albie hit one hopper back to Wodashick who tossed him out.
- 2:12:44Wodashick to White, one down on the seventh, and that brings on Bob Allison.
- 2:12:48One of the strong hitters in baseball. Allison up for the first time.
- 2:12:52Big right-hand hitter of the Minnesota Twins.
- 2:12:56Right behind them another twin, Harmon Kellebrew. He'll hit next as a strike.
- 2:13:13Born in Raytown, Missouri, lives in Minnesota now. Here's the pitch as a strike call on Allison.
- 2:13:22The killer Kellebrew mixed. One down, seven innings, score four to three, National League Leagues.
- 2:13:33Wodashick in the wind. Here's his pitch. Allison takes it, bit inside.
- 2:13:41Allison is 6'4", weighs 220 pounds.
- 2:13:48Next pitch on the way is a long foul ball going down the left field line.
- 2:13:52That'll go into the lower deck.
- 2:13:56A ball and two strikes.
- 2:14:02Al Wodashick, a left-hander, one-time pitcher with the Cleveland Ball Club.
- 2:14:09Score four to three, National League leading, seventh inning. Here's the lineup, the pitch.
- 2:14:14Allison swings and bounces a foul down past Sam Mealy coaching at first.
- 2:14:18Well, Mealy the twin manager. The hitter is Allison, the twin right fielder.
- 2:14:23And the on-deck hitter, Kellebrew, the left fielder for the Twins.
- 2:14:29People in Minnesota are proud of this power. One out on the seventh.
- 2:14:36And Wodashick ready to pitch and he does. And the ball is swung around and missed.
- 2:14:39He struck him out with a fast ball. Allison, the big man out of there swinging.
- 2:14:45Here comes Harmon Kellebrew.
- 2:14:49Right-hand hitter. And this fellow has got muscles on his muscles. He's big.
- 2:14:58Right now, it's four runs, four hits and no errors for the National League.
- 2:15:02The American League, three runs, ten hits. They've committed one error.
- 2:15:06American League now capitalizing on their hits.
- 2:15:11Wodashick ready to pitch to the killer and he does. It's outside the ball.
- 2:15:17Complementary nickname for Harmon. He's called the killer.
- 2:15:20Most ball players have nicknames. One kind or other.
- 2:15:31Now Wodashick set again. Here it is. Kellebrew took it. It's a strike.
- 2:15:36Letter high over the outside corner. Good place for Harmon to hit the ball.
- 2:15:45Oh, he's in a hurry out there, Wodashick. Next pitch is a strike call.
- 2:15:51Wodashick nibbling on the corners now. And it's a ball and two strikes.
- 2:15:56Two out on the seventh inning.
- 2:16:08Wodashick already again. Here it is. Call strike three.
- 2:16:13Full on that time. So the seventh inning, no runs, no hits and no errors and nobody left.
- 2:16:18And the score now, the end of seven, National League four, American League three.

- 2:18:01and the Woodlawn Branch with a drive-in window at 815 State Street.
- 2:18:05This is WGY Schenectady.
- 2:18:09Changes are just two of them.
- 2:18:11Tom Tresh of the Yankees will be in center field in place of Albie Pearson.
- 2:18:15And Dick Raditz, a big right-hander of the Boston Red Sox, will do the pitching.
- 2:18:19He's just now starting his warm-up.
- 2:18:21Raditz possesses a very low earned run average this year, appearing in 33 ball games.
- 2:18:261.42, pitching entirely in relief.
- 2:18:30And I guess, Bob, you'd have to say one of the game's outstanding and top-relief pitchers.
- 2:18:35Here he is, George. We saw him recently in a couple of series,
- 2:18:39and veterans like Joe Adcock said it was almost unbelievable the way this fellow
- 2:18:44with his tremendous size and free-wheeling can really pump that ball in there.
- 2:18:49Bill White, Willie Mays, and a pinch-hitter, no doubt, for the pitcher,
- 2:18:55will come out here in the eighth inning.
- 2:18:57The score is 4-3, the National League leads.
- 2:19:06And Raditz, a big right-hander, is ready. Weighs 235 pounds.
- 2:19:11Martin Detroit lives in Royal Oak, Michigan. The first pitch is low, a ball.
- 2:19:15Nice, free, easy motion, but he can throw aspirin tablets at that plate.
- 2:19:20Bill White, the first baseman, a left-hand hitter, has not hit in three times at bat.
- 2:19:26Next one on the way, call strike at the knees over the inside corner.
- 2:19:32Defensively, we have Brooks Robinson at third.
- 2:19:34Apparachoe is at shortstop. Bobby Richardson at second.
- 2:19:38Pepitone is still at first.
- 2:19:40Yes, Trenkski, Tresh, and Allison in the outfield.
- 2:19:43Here's Raditz's next pitch, foul ball on a breaking ball this time,
- 2:19:46side-armed into the left-hand-hitting Bill White.
- 2:19:52Big as he is, that easy motion, long arms. He's rugged.
- 2:19:58Drysdale is in the bullpen now for the National League in left field.
- 2:20:02Here's the pitch, missed outside.
- 2:20:04Now we go to two balls and two strikes here in the eighth inning on Bill White.
- 2:20:09The National League already leading by a score of 4-3.
- 2:20:15White can hit the ball out of the park, but the outfield is playing him straight away because Raditz can fire.
- 2:20:21Here's a foul ball hit back a third upstairs.
- 2:20:27Cleveland Municipal Stadium, all bedecked in boning, honor of this great day in baseball, the All-Star Game.
- 2:20:40Two balls and two strikes. White at the plate, close one, 4-3.
- 2:20:49Here's Raditz pitching, fouled off the screen back of the plate.
- 2:20:53And a slider, a breaking ball of some sort, got right on the fists of the left-hand-hitting White.
- 2:20:59Hit one of those right, I tell you, you get a handful of bees, a broken bat.
- 2:21:08Two and two.
- 2:21:13Here's Raditz's next pitch on the way. White swings on it and fouls this one off back a third.
- 2:21:18He's at the top of the ballpark and will bounce back on the field.
- 2:21:21And then back again and almost caught, but not quite.
- 2:21:26And the fellow's leaning over the temporary fence down there, all the fans.
- 2:21:30It looks like a bunch of blocks when you set them up, you know, push the first one over as the ball rolled down.
- 2:21:36Now two balls, two strikes on White. Raditz with the new one, cranks up and delivers to the plate.
- 2:21:41A hard hit going to the right field on the ground, a base hit.
- 2:21:46That's only the fifth hit in the first since the third inning for the National League, and about an hour will be Willie Mays.
- 2:21:55Well, Willie has done just about everything here today. He walked, he's single, he grounded out.
- 2:22:01He batted in two runs, he scored two, and he has stolen two bases.
- 2:22:11Mays, a right-hand hitter.
- 2:22:17The first pitch to Mays has swung on and fouled off, and Mays is going to try to hit that one in the lake.
- 2:22:26Boy, he took a pretty good rip.
- 2:22:36Next pitch to Mays is outside the ball.
- 2:22:48Willie Mays at the plate, infield shortened up. Willie, a pretty tough man to double, can run.
- 2:22:55A ball and a strike, the stretch by Raditz, here it is, fouled off.
- 2:22:59In fact, Willie went out a little from the plate that time, took a little gamble on Raditz fastball.
- 2:23:15Score four to three. We're in the top of the eighth inning, and the National League leads the American League.
- 2:23:21Bases on balls really have been a big difference in the game.
- 2:23:26Here's Raditz's next pitch, runner going, called strike, throw to second, not in time, stolen base down there.
- 2:23:32Willie Mays has called out on strikes. You won't see that many times.
- 2:23:37Running hit play at that time.
- 2:23:41Bill White was running, and Willie Mays is out on strikes.
- 2:23:46And that'll bring on Ron Santo.
- 2:23:56Santo, the Chicago Cubs' third baseman, a right-hand hitter with power.
- 2:24:02Willie McCovey has come out on deck.
- 2:24:12So now Raditz has a runner at second base, Bill White, one man away, top of the eighth.
- 2:24:21National League four, American League three.
- 2:24:24American League gets ten hits, the National League five, which a payoff on score.
- 2:24:28Raditz delivers, swing, and a miss for a blue dotter thrown up there by Raditz.
- 2:24:37We have 44,160 here, and they've enjoyed a ballgame, and it's still a good one.
- 2:24:44Aren't they all, really?
- 2:24:46Here's Raditz pitching.
- 2:24:48There's a loop, a broken bat job, dying quail, base hit to right field, White on the way to the plate, and he'll score.
- 2:24:56Now it's a five-to-three ballgame.
- 2:25:00Ron Santo in a broken bat, single to right field, to drive home White with a fifth National League run.
- 2:25:09And that'll bring on a bench hitter for the pitcher, Willie McCovey.
- 2:25:17Willie McCovey, 6'4", 200 pounder, born in Mobile, Alabama, lives in San Francisco, left-hand hitter.
- 2:25:26And he can wrap them.
- 2:25:31Runner at first base now, and has one out, and the infield shortened up for the double player.
- 2:25:37McCovey at the plate, swung out and missed, took a big cut.
- 2:25:46There are many hard swingers in baseball.
- 2:25:49This man is a hard swinger, long arms, long bat, and boy, he unloads.
- 2:25:56Here's the stretch now by Raditz. Pitcher swung out and fouled off. He fooled them, then, at one hand off the bat.
- 2:26:13Five-to-three ballgame, National League.
- 2:26:21Raditz in his stretch, he's a right-hander. Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss. He struck them out.
- 2:26:31So McCovey, a bench hitter, out on strikes.
- 2:26:35And the battle now will be Dick Grode, and Raditz has either struck them out or given them a hit.
- 2:26:39Two hits, two strikeouts in this inning.
- 2:26:44Dick Grode.
- 2:26:46Grode's a right-hand hitter. And up to the plate three times, single ones to bat in a run.
- 2:26:56Raditz in his stretch, runner at first lead. Here's the pitch. A strike call.
- 2:27:10Two gone, one strike to count on. Dick Grode, the Cardinal shortstop.
- 2:27:18Up and ready is Raditz. Santo in his lead. Here's the pitch.
- 2:27:22Tries to hit it to right field, fouled it off down the right field line. Grode, an expert at hitting the ball, back of runner.
- 2:27:41A little roar and wrestle you hear. Somebody caught that ball and fell down and tore up a $26 pair of slacks for a $3 baseball.
- 2:27:49He'd do it all the time. It's all right, name of the game.
- 2:27:52Now we're ready with a new one. Here's the pitch to the plate. And it's a call strike.
- 2:27:56And Raditz struck out the side, but he did give up in the inning.
- 2:28:00One run on two hits. No errors, no man left.
- 2:28:04The score at the end of seven and a half innings, National League Five, American League Three.

- 2:29:09Just a few of the reasons why in 63 Dodge sales are 65% ahead.
- 2:29:14For the National League.
- 2:29:17Another change now, now pitching for the National League.
- 2:29:20And the Dodgers, Don Drysdale.
- 2:29:23Side wheel and right-hander.
- 2:29:26Drysdale.
- 2:29:27Drysdale is 6-6.
- 2:29:33Full of all hard, great fastball.
- 2:29:37A little bit better than slider.
- 2:29:39Elston Howard will be the first man to face him in the eighth.
- 2:29:42The American League now has this chance and one more.
- 2:29:46To kind of a quick recap at the moment, the difference really is the base on balls,
- 2:29:50issued by American League pitchers.
- 2:29:53One up in the second inning scored.
- 2:29:59One on the fifth inning scored.
- 2:30:02It's all part of the game, like the error, the base hit, pop fly, whatever.
- 2:30:09Elston Howard comes on to hit against Drysdale.
- 2:30:14And this has happened before in the World Series.
- 2:30:19They look back and create the great moments.
- 2:30:22Both these men have had them.
- 2:30:26Big winner last year, Don Drysdale, winner of the Cy Young Award.
- 2:30:29Here's his first pitch.
- 2:30:30It's a fastball strike in there.
- 2:30:34Those of you who get a chance to see the American League and not the National League,
- 2:30:37Quasaro, left-hander, same kind of a fastball as Drysdale has, a right-hander.
- 2:30:43Swing and a miss and he threw a breaking ball from strike two.
- 2:30:47Elston Howard up there in place of Leon Wagner.
- 2:30:56Drysdale into that windup and here she comes, missed outside a ball.
- 2:31:01Drysdale gives a little flick of the wrist as he turns the ball loose.
- 2:31:05It's five to three, the National League leading the American League.
- 2:31:10The last half of the eighth inning in Cleveland's beautiful and big municipal stadium.
- 2:31:16Drysdale set again.
- 2:31:18Here it is.
- 2:31:19Foul ball back to the screen behind the plate.
- 2:31:22Hank Sower, the umpire, working back there.
- 2:31:25Big Bill Jitkowski of the National League at first.
- 2:31:30Al Smith of the American League at second.
- 2:31:32Paul Prior, third.
- 2:31:34Extra umpires, Harvey is in right field.
- 2:31:37Haller down the left field line.
- 2:31:38The pitch gets by, but it's too low.
- 2:31:41That's two and two.
- 2:31:48Sandy Koufax is now on the bullpen for the National League.
- 2:31:57Two and two of the count.
- 2:31:59First, struck him out.
- 2:32:02Drysdale's first man is struck out.
- 2:32:05And that, of course, is Drysdale's long suit.
- 2:32:07And the battle now will be Jastrinsky.
- 2:32:10Look at the line score right now.
- 2:32:12National League has five runs on six hits and no errors.
- 2:32:15The American League three runs on ten hits and one error.
- 2:32:20Now Jastrinsky, a left-hand hitter of the Boston Red Sox, up now.
- 2:32:28Don Drysdale, all set, one gone in the eighth.
- 2:32:31Pitch is a strike right in there.
- 2:32:33Jastrinsky took it.
- 2:32:34Third baseman, Sato, up even with a bag.
- 2:32:39Jastrinsky can hit to all fields.
- 2:32:42And the outfield plays him almost straight away.
- 2:32:46Here's Drysdale's next pitch, and it's a bit low.
- 2:32:50One and one.
- 2:32:55Great and classic game, the all-star game.
- 2:33:02Drysdale gets a sign from Johnny Edwards.
- 2:33:05Cranks up and fires, and the ball is fouled off in the upper deck.
- 2:33:09Bag of the plate.
- 2:33:17Joe Papatone, the Yankees, has gone all the way at first base.
- 2:33:20It's on deck.
- 2:33:23One ball, two strikes.
- 2:33:28Drysdale gets the good sign now and rears back and fires a fastball by him.
- 2:33:33Struck him out.
- 2:33:34Jastrinsky took a good cut and was down swinging.
- 2:33:38So now we've had occasion to have Woodishick strike out two men,
- 2:33:42the last two men on the seventh and the first two men on the eighth.
- 2:33:46And here is Papatone.
- 2:33:48Now the booing you'll hear, this is a Cleveland group of fans.
- 2:33:58Papatone of the Yankees.
- 2:33:59Here's a pitch inside a ball.
- 2:34:03The booing and not this young gentleman has done quite a job for the Yankees.
- 2:34:11Here's Drysdale in a hurry now.
- 2:34:13Next pitch.
- 2:34:14Swung out, long drive, center field.
- 2:34:16Willie Mays on the run, not patting the glove, but at the wall.
- 2:34:20He runs into the fence and got it, and I believe Willie hurt himself out there.
- 2:34:24The ball hit to the 380-foot mark.
- 2:34:26He's limping coming in.
- 2:34:28That'll retire the side.
- 2:34:30Good catch by Willie, very deep.
- 2:34:32No runs, no hits, and no errors.
- 2:34:34At the end of the eighth inning, the score, National League 5 and America League 3.
- 2:34:40Another, a letter from Bob.
- 2:34:41Listen, dear Ruth, your authorized Chrysler Motor Corporation Dealer's Warranty

- 2:35:28of parts covered by the warranty.
- 2:35:30Coverage will not apply to trucks subjected to prolonged power takeoff
- 2:35:34or off-highway use.
- 2:35:35Thinking of you always, Bob.
- 2:35:38Dear, are you sure you're doing the right thing marrying a car dealer?
- 2:35:42Julian Javier.
- 2:35:44In the ninth inning, it will be Julian Javier and Johnny Edwards,
- 2:35:48the eighth and the ninth hitters, and then Tommy Davis, scheduled at any rate.
- 2:35:53But at the plate right now is Javier, the second baseman of the Cardinals,
- 2:35:56the right-hand hitter, and Nick Raditz, the big right-hander to deliver to him.
- 2:36:00And the first one swung on and fouled off into the screen back of the plate.
- 2:36:04Sports five to three, the National League leads.
- 2:36:07We're in the top of the ninth.
- 2:36:09American League has one more pop at them.
- 2:36:16Colfax still busy in the National League bullpen.
- 2:36:22Raditz gets the sign from Elston Howard.
- 2:36:24Pitch is Javier takes that one outside, and it's one and one.
- 2:36:32Ninth inning in Cleveland, bright sunshine.
- 2:36:38The National League on top by a pair.
- 2:36:40Here's the pitch.
- 2:36:41Swung on and missed on a breaking ball, one ball and two strikes.
- 2:36:45Javier fooled on Edwin.
- 2:36:52The National League went fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings without a base hit.
- 2:37:00Next pitch is swung on and fouled off.
- 2:37:05The National League has got a run in the first inning on one hit.
- 2:37:10On the second inning, rather, one run on one hit.
- 2:37:12Two bases on balls in there.
- 2:37:15Two runs in the third, one in the fifth, and one in the eighth.
- 2:37:20Raditz next pitch, a bit high.
- 2:37:23Now it's two balls and two strikes.
- 2:37:29American League got a run in the second.
- 2:37:31They got two in the third, and that's all.
- 2:37:38Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:37:40It's a big right hander, Raditz.
- 2:37:41Pitch is swung on and missed.
- 2:37:43He struck them out.
- 2:37:45Javier out on strikes.
- 2:37:48And that will bring on Johnny Edwards.
- 2:37:57And Raditz is going to have many strikeouts here until this inning, and he has four of them,
- 2:38:01or until this part of the game that he's been in.
- 2:38:04They get five now.
- 2:38:07Edwards up now.
- 2:38:09He went up one time and grounded out.
- 2:38:15Waiting now for Alberto Clemente to go into the bullpen and let go.
- 2:38:19He has to run in playing area.
- 2:38:22They wait for him.
- 2:38:26Probably go in in place of May and hope well he wasn't hurt badly.
- 2:38:30Here's the pitch.
- 2:38:31Swing and a miss, and it's one strike.
- 2:38:39White sidewalls.
- 2:38:40Duke Snyder on deck.
- 2:38:44Another pitch by Raditz.
- 2:38:45High fly ball.
- 2:38:46Left side.
- 2:38:47Aparicio going back far.
- 2:38:49Yastremski coming over, the left fielder.
- 2:38:51He's there and he's got it.
- 2:38:52Any of three could have taken it.
- 2:38:57Two down now.
- 2:38:59And Duke Snyder will be hitting for Tommy Davis.
- 2:39:02Duke Snyder wearing the uniform much the same color that he wore in Brooklyn, the same number four, and the same color that he wore in Los Angeles.
- 2:39:16But now it's the New York Mets, and Duke Snyder comes on with two down tonight.
- 2:39:23National League leading.
- 2:39:24Here's the ground ball hit hard down the right fielder line foul.
- 2:39:29Snyder always a threat.
- 2:39:31He walks up swinging.
- 2:39:37Score is five to three.
- 2:39:38The National League leading in this ball game in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:39:42Here's Raditz ready again.
- 2:39:43A fair ball in for a call strike.
- 2:39:50Snyder has a couple of words to say to Hank Siller.
- 2:39:53I'm sure not about the pitch, just where was it probably?
- 2:39:59Next pitch on the way, outside.
- 2:40:02Raditz is one and two on Duke Snyder, a left-hand hitter.
- 2:40:08Probably the best performance of the day has been turned in thus far by Raditz.
- 2:40:14And he does that almost every day.
- 2:40:15Here's the pitch.
- 2:40:17Call strike over the outside corner.
- 2:40:20Snyder is out.
- 2:40:21In the ninth inning, it's no runs, no hits, and no errors.
- 2:40:25At the end of eight and a half, the score, National League five, American League three.
- 2:40:37Known as the success car of the year, it's the 1963 Dodge Dart.
- 2:40:42Big on room, yet small in price.
- 2:40:44A compact, but with enough wide open spaces for family enjoyment.
- 2:40:47Big car power, but with real gas economy.
- 2:40:50And with all the engineering features that have made Dodge mean dependable.
- 2:40:54All this plus the first in only five-year or 50,000-mile warranty you heard about earlier.
- 2:40:59Yours only on cars from Chrysler Corporation.
- 2:41:02For a look at the success car of the year and for the best deal you ever made, see Dart at your Dodge dealers.
- 2:41:10Some changes now.
- 2:41:13Roberto Clemente goes into the ballgame in the center field.
- 2:41:17Snyder stays in the game and goes into left field.
- 2:41:33Luis Aparicio will be the header in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:41:40Aparicio, Robinson, and Bobby Richardson schedule.
- 2:41:45Score five to three.
- 2:41:49And we're in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:41:52And now something made about the changes.
- 2:41:55Co-facts.
- 2:41:58One for Ben Mambo and the other.
- 2:42:00Here's the first pitch to Aparicio. It's high, a ball.
- 2:42:03Luis, a little guy, great shortstop, a right-hand hitter.
- 2:42:06Always a bunt threat and Santos up close.
- 2:42:09Needing a couple of runs, he might do anything.
- 2:42:12Here's a high fly ball into short right field.
- 2:42:15Second baseman Javier back and he has it.
- 2:42:19Aparicio out on a pop fly ball.
- 2:42:24Ritz Robinson comes on now.
- 2:42:27Juan Marichal is now in the National League bullpen.
- 2:42:32Five runs on five hits, no errors.
- 2:42:35They get five runs on six hits, no errors for the National League.
- 2:42:39Three, ten, and one for the American League.
- 2:42:41Next pitch, swung on and missed on a sidearm curve by Drysdale.
- 2:42:48Ballgame action packed early and good pitching now.
- 2:42:53One out of the ninth, last chance.
- 2:42:56The pitch, swung on the line, center field, base hit.
- 2:43:00So Brooks Robinson singles to center field.
- 2:43:03Plametti fires back in toward second.
- 2:43:05Now Bobby Richardson represents the tying run here in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:43:11Richardson, a right-hand hitter and giving him a little bit of a shot here right now too.
- 2:43:20Get into a double play in the sixth inning.
- 2:43:26He's a right-hand batter, runner at first.
- 2:43:29He's the tying run.
- 2:43:31There's one out, Enfield shorting for the possible double play.
- 2:43:35Call strike over the outside corner, Drysdale fired at him.
- 2:43:41We're in the last half of the ninth.
- 2:43:45Big Don Drysdale, any stretch.
- 2:43:48Here's the pitch, swung on and fouled into the glove of the catcher, and it's nothing in two.
- 2:43:55Richardson at the plate, Tommy Trash with the Yankees on deck.
- 2:44:05Drysdale gets that sign once again from John Edwards and the stretch he goes.
- 2:44:10Looks over to first and steps off.
- 2:44:14Brooks Robinson's run, not an important run, but a score five to three.
- 2:44:19They want to hold him just the same with the one out.
- 2:44:22Now Drysdale's up there.
- 2:44:25Here's the pitch.
- 2:44:27In the middle hole and off the shin guard to the catcher, Johnny Edwards bounced out in front.
- 2:44:31He went out and got it.
- 2:44:33Robinson had to hang on down in first base.
- 2:44:44Richardson from Sumter, South Carolina.
- 2:44:48Here's Drysdale's pitch, and it's a ground ball.
- 2:44:52Throw out a second for one, might be a game-winning double play it is.
- 2:44:56Dwight fired to Groats, Groats back to first base, and Richardson hit into two double plays.
- 2:45:02And this one ended the ball game.
- 2:45:04Ended the ninth inning, no round, about one hit, though no errors.
- 2:45:07And nobody left.
- 2:45:09And a final score in the All-Star Game, National League Five, the American League Three.
- 2:45:17You're more familiar, I'm pretty sure, of Bob with what's going to go on.
- 2:45:24What is it?
- 2:45:35Next to the All-Star Game, one of the most unusual endings, certainly of any spectacular ball game,
- 2:45:42in which a great little second baseman, who in some other great classics has been honored as the most proud player,
- 2:45:49will give him the two double plays today.
- 2:45:52The National League Five runs on six hits and no errors.
- 2:45:56The American League Three runs on 11 hits and one error.
- 2:46:00So the bonded power of the National League did not show itself.
- 2:46:03The pitches of the American League were able to hold the National League to only six hits,
- 2:46:08but were not able to score the runs.
- 2:46:10The American League left seven runners stranded on the bases,
- 2:46:13and a fine play by Tommy Davis in the first inning sort of set the theme for the whole affair
- 2:46:18when he threw to the plate to get Nellie Fox trying to score out from third on a fly ball hit deep in the left field by Al Kailon.
- 2:46:27A wonderful, spectacular performance by a great number of pitchers.
- 2:46:31Nick Raditz, the fireballer from the Boston Red Sox, who struck out five of the eight men he faced.
- 2:46:37The National League's Don Grisdale, who came on in the eighth and ninth innings and took care of the American League,
- 2:46:44although he surrendered a hit getting Bobby Richardson to bounce into a double play.
- 2:46:48Interesting to note that Ralph Hough used practically everybody on his staff with the exception of two players,
- 2:46:55Norm Siebert and Don Leppard, and in the pitching department used all of his pitches with the exception of Bill Munglequette and Jim Grant.
- 2:47:04The National League utilized most of their players with the exception of Orlando Sepade of San Francisco,
- 2:47:10Joe Torre of Milwaukee, and Lori Welds of Los Angeles, so they used all but three of their outfielder, infielder, catcher department.
- 2:47:17In the pitching department, they used all but Warren Spahn and Juan Marichal and Sammy Kofax,
- 2:47:23although Marichal was working in the bullpen along with Kofax at the end of the game.
- 2:47:27So the fans who came to see got a chance to see the All-Stars.
- 2:47:32Warren Spahn, they had a chance to see him before the game.
- 2:47:35They got an opportunity to see Stand-A-Man Musial, Duke Schneider, Willie Mays.
- 2:47:39Mays making one of the fine catches of the game against the fans,
- 2:47:43giving every inch of their great talents in a performance that enabled the 44,000 fans who paid their way here today on the banks of Lake Erie
- 2:47:53to watch indeed a game that typifies the great desire of the men of professional baseball to utilize their abilities.
- 2:48:00It certainly is a great lesson to the young fellows of playing baseball around the country
- 2:48:05that here indeed on this diamond this afternoon were men who proved that if you have the talents and are willing to work at it,
- 2:48:11you can realize the ambition of your lifetime.
- 2:48:15I'd have to say, George Bryson, that every young man who played on this diamond today took a great sense of pride in his performance and in his appearance.
- 2:48:25You're absolutely right. It's probably the greatest honor that can ever fall a Major League Ball player now,
- 2:48:31and at the beginning perhaps it wasn't exactly that way, but suddenly now there's come a feeling in the past few years
- 2:48:37that this is a great showcase for the national pastime.
- 2:48:41And youngsters can't help but look at the men out there, no matter who they are, where they come from,
- 2:48:45if they're in this All-Star game, they represent a slice of the pie of America and the best game of all.
- 2:48:52Wherever you are, youngsters, you have this talent to play ball, play all you can.
- 2:48:56And the same thing I'll make pass on to the fans.
- 2:48:59If there's a ball game in your neighborhood, be it semi-pro, professional, Major League, whatever it is,
- 2:49:04it's a wonderful place to spend a summer evening or a summer afternoon in a ballpark.
- 2:49:08And now the margin closes down. The American League has won 17 games. The National League has won 16.
- 2:49:14There's been one tie. And here today in Cleveland, Ohio,
- 2:49:19the best of the National and of the American League have been here.
- 2:49:22George, it's been a wonderful day.
- 2:49:25Certainly has, especially for us truly coming in here.
- 2:49:29And although we didn't get to see the ball player representing the club I'm with in the city play,
- 2:49:34that too is something that should be touched on.
- 2:49:36Managers want to win this ball game. They like to get everybody in, but in most cases it's not at all possible.
- 2:49:42No, indeed. They tried to play the game. They tried to give the ball a chance to play,
- 2:49:46and that's the story of the all-star game of 1963, National League Five, the American League Three.
