- 0:36Speaker 1: you feeling and how you're feeling about next week? A
- 0:39Speaker 1: quick update on the Georgia Notre Dame All State Sugar
- 0:43Speaker 1: Bowl College football playoff quarterfinal matchup. Right now the Bulldogs
- 0:46Speaker 1: it will get the ball back after Notre Dame punt
- 0:48Speaker 1: moving into Notre Dame territory. Gunnar Stockton with two pretty
- 0:52Speaker 1: good throws, But right now the Bulldogs are facing third
- 0:56Speaker 1: in short in Notre Dame territory. Will keep you updated
- 1:00Speaker 1: on that. Okay, back to more sound from Steve Sarkejian
- 1:04Speaker 1: and this Texas team, and he was asked about the
- 1:06Speaker 1: bend but never break mentality that we've seen from the
- 1:09Speaker 1: long Corns over the past two seasons.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I think one thing that happens is you know, as
- 1:18Speaker 3: a team, you grow through adversity as long as you
- 1:22Speaker 3: handle adversity the right way. And you know, I said
- 1:25Speaker 3: to these guys, you know, a year ago today there
- 1:28Speaker 3: was there was a lot of a lot of tears
- 1:29Speaker 3: and a lot of frustration because we weren't able to
- 1:32Speaker 3: close out the semi final to get to the national
- 1:34Speaker 3: championship game. And that started it. And I think the
- 1:37Speaker 3: way they responded to that, to all the things that
- 1:41Speaker 3: we went through this offseason, the summer into fall camp,
- 1:45Speaker 3: losing losing a critical piece to this team and Cedric Baxter,
- 1:48Speaker 3: one of our team leaders, to Quinn getting injured earlier
- 1:51Speaker 3: in the season, to losing Calvin Banks, to losing a
- 1:54Speaker 3: lot of different players right along the way, Isaiah Bond,
- 1:57Speaker 3: and so on and so forth. But the next guy
- 2:00Speaker 3: steps up, you know, and the moment doesn't ever feel
- 2:03Speaker 3: too big for our guys. Is critical as a moment
- 2:06Speaker 3: might be as maybe we're not playing our best football.
- 2:10Speaker 3: The one thing I know, the resolve is that they
- 2:13Speaker 3: know how to really lock in and get focused and
- 2:15Speaker 3: be at their best when their best is needed.
- 2:17Speaker 1: It won't count as a one score victory because taxes
- 2:21Speaker 1: will win. Actually I'm sorry, well eight points, so they
- 2:24Speaker 1: have not had many one score victories this season. Their
- 2:27Speaker 1: closest win before the game came against Vanderbilt, that three
- 2:31Speaker 1: point victory twenty seven to twenty four. But looking at
- 2:34Speaker 1: one score games coming in, I think they were just
- 2:38Speaker 1: one in one, So not a lot to look at
- 2:41Speaker 1: to know whether or not this team how they perform
- 2:43Speaker 1: in one score games, especially if it came down to
- 2:47Speaker 1: the final quarter or quarters. And we saw Texas against
- 2:50Speaker 1: Georgia lose that game in overtime in the SEC Championship.
- 2:55Speaker 1: But I think a little bit of a confidence boost
- 2:57Speaker 1: for this team to be able to, you know, losing
- 3:01Speaker 1: elite is one thing, but to be able to come
- 3:03Speaker 1: back and then pull out the win. You really saw
- 3:05Speaker 1: that bend but not break mentality the fourth down throw.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Mentioned it with Craig Way. There's been some huge fourth
- 3:15Speaker 1: down plays in Texas history, offense and defense. Of course,
- 3:19Speaker 1: everyone thinks about fourth and five. How about the fourth
- 3:22Speaker 1: and seventeen the year before Kansas. In fact, we've kind
- 3:26Speaker 1: of heard people talk about it that there is no
- 3:30Speaker 1: Texas National Championship without Finn Chunk converting that fourth and
- 3:34Speaker 1: seventeen in Lawrence, Kansas the year before that, in which,
- 3:40Speaker 1: as Craig describes it, and he took three long strides
- 3:42Speaker 1: and boom got the first down. Texas would win that game.
- 3:45Speaker 1: They would end up qualifying for the Rolls Bowl, they
- 3:47Speaker 1: would beat Michigan and then going to the next season
- 3:50Speaker 1: as a top ranked team, and of course we all
- 3:52Speaker 1: know what happened. Well, Quinn yours had his own fourth
- 3:56Speaker 1: down moment yesterday, first overtime trilling by a touchdown season
- 4:03Speaker 1: on the line. Quinn you were stepped up and delivered
- 4:07Speaker 1: a strike to Matthew Golden to tie the game up,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and then would come back and deliver another strike to
- 4:14Speaker 1: Gunner Helm to end up winning the football game. So
- 4:17Speaker 1: Sark was asked about that throw Quinn made him fourth down.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I thought there was a couple of
- 4:21Speaker 3: things that were impressive. One, I thought it was a
- 4:24Speaker 3: great job of preparation by our coaches and relaying that
- 4:29Speaker 3: to our players. You know, we actually practiced that play
- 4:33Speaker 3: versus that exact defense during the week and there was
- 4:37Speaker 3: some moving parts to that to where Quinn had to
- 4:40Speaker 3: change the protection on the play, and he did. He
- 4:42Speaker 3: got us to a max protection. But even at that
- 4:44Speaker 3: there were some intricacies to handle the pressure of the
- 4:48Speaker 3: way it was coming inside, and so the protection him
- 4:51Speaker 3: changed it to them getting the protection and then matt
- 4:54Speaker 3: understanding why that route was going to be there predicated
- 4:57Speaker 3: on the coverage, and I thought Queen's ability to stand
- 5:01Speaker 3: in the pocket and deliver the deliver the ball the
- 5:03Speaker 3: way that he did it was a real strike. So
- 5:05Speaker 3: there was layers to the whole thing. We guessed a
- 5:09Speaker 3: little what the call, thinking they might come after us,
- 5:11Speaker 3: and we guessed right, and he did a great job
- 5:13Speaker 3: of getting the protection right and making the play.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Matthew goldenknew ran that fake to the outside and
- 5:18Speaker 1: then cut inside on the Arizona State safety put him
- 5:21Speaker 1: in the blender. He knew the safety was not going
- 5:23Speaker 1: to be back there. So a fantastic decision by Quinn
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yours to the check in the max protect, deliver the throw.
- 5:29Speaker 1: There's a lot of things that I don't think quin
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yours gets credit for. We for multiple times this season
- 5:36Speaker 1: about Quinn's ability at the line of scrimmage to check
- 5:39Speaker 1: in the plays or to audible and they end up
- 5:41Speaker 1: leading into huge plays. Was the Jayden Blue touchdown run?
- 5:46Speaker 1: Was that one that Quinn Ewers checked into right. So
- 5:49Speaker 1: now there's decisions like the interception throw that are not good. Right,
- 5:55Speaker 1: he has his moments. There's good and bad, but he's
- 5:58Speaker 1: had a lot of good during his time at Texas
- 6:01Speaker 1: and now is back to back college football play if
- 6:03Speaker 1: semi final appearances. Now, let's hear from Quinn yours on
- 6:07Speaker 1: the comeback, his thoughts on it, what he was thinking
- 6:10Speaker 1: all of that.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Well, I think just first off, that's just the testament
- 6:13Speaker 4: to how mature this team is and just taking advantage
- 6:17Speaker 4: of every single opportunity that we have, whether it be
- 6:20Speaker 4: four and fifteen or you know, first and ten, whatever
- 6:23Speaker 4: the situation is, just taking full advantage of the opportunity
- 6:27Speaker 4: that's throwing our way. And I'm just so proud of
- 6:29Speaker 4: the way that the entire team stayed poised and composed
- 6:32Speaker 4: through the entire game, especially through overtime. And no, it
- 6:35Speaker 4: definitely feels a lot better to be on this end
- 6:37Speaker 4: of the of the win in overtime at the same
- 6:40Speaker 4: spot for sure.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about that one.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Quinn.
- 6:42Speaker 1: How about the ability's ability, his ability and the team's
- 6:45Speaker 1: ability to stay calm in the big moments.
- 6:47Speaker 4: I think that we all stay calm and for all
- 6:52Speaker 4: for all of us to stay calm. It kind of
- 6:53Speaker 4: starts with me and I just try to be that
- 6:56Speaker 4: calm within the storm for all the guys. And I
- 7:00Speaker 4: think that my relationship with with Jesus has helped me
- 7:04Speaker 4: in that specific way of knowing that no matter what happens,
- 7:09Speaker 4: that He's going to be there for me, He's still
- 7:11Speaker 4: gonna love me. And the reality of it is is
- 7:15Speaker 4: that that's the reality of it.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I think outside the Georgia game, you know, I
- 7:19Speaker 1: haven't really seen Quinn well, hold on, let me back
- 7:21Speaker 1: up last two years, outside that Georgia game, have not
- 7:24Speaker 1: really seen Quinn get ratted right now. His freshman year
- 7:27Speaker 1: at Texas Oklahoma State, Yeah, there were some moments the
- 7:30Speaker 1: last two years. I think he's been very common big moments.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I think back to Alabama at Brian Denny Stadium, Right,
- 7:36Speaker 1: he was very calm in that huge win over a
- 7:38Speaker 1: top ranked Alabama team. I think even against Washington in
- 7:42Speaker 1: that comeback. Right, Texas came up short in that game,
- 7:45Speaker 1: but I mean he brought Texas all the way down
- 7:49Speaker 1: to the red zone to almost win that game, right,
- 7:52Speaker 1: if not for two fumbles from the Texas running backs.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Who knows what happens in that season in this season.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Right in that game, you know, he led Texas down
- 8:00Speaker 1: twice twice the regulation and unfortunately Brett Auburn continues to
- 8:05Speaker 1: struggle kicking the football, but you know, he put Texas
- 8:08Speaker 1: in a spot to win that game twice and then
- 8:10Speaker 1: ultimately did it with his arm in double overtime. He
- 8:16Speaker 1: was asked what was set in between the overtime possessions,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, after the strike to Matthew Golden to tie
- 8:23Speaker 1: it up and then his touchdown passed to Gunnerhilm on
- 8:27Speaker 1: the very next play that put Texas in front for good.
- 8:30Speaker 4: It was pretty sure and simple, you know, just let's
- 8:32Speaker 4: go do it again. And coach Shark called a great
- 8:36Speaker 4: play that we run pretty often gets our own defense
- 8:38Speaker 4: and it hit kind of similar. So it's funny how
- 8:41Speaker 4: things work.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about the beginning of the show that
- 8:44Speaker 1: it was a look a play that Texas had practiced before,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and they had practiced it against that same exact defensive
- 8:51Speaker 1: look that that six man blitz from Arizona State and
- 8:54Speaker 1: Texas Quinn, Matthew Golden, the protection, everybody executed it per
- 9:00Speaker 1: for Klee to tie that game up. Now about now
- 9:03Speaker 1: the team's confidence in Quinn. This is a response from
- 9:06Speaker 1: from Steve Sarkusian and Shanny Barn. I think you think
- 9:10Speaker 1: about two guys in this Texas team that, no matter
- 9:12Speaker 1: what do the ups and downs, have backed up their quarterback.
- 9:15Speaker 1: It's been Steve Sarkusian and Seanny Barn.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Quinn's a g man. He is like, like I know,
- 9:22Speaker 3: he doesn't always exude that like in his body language
- 9:25Speaker 3: and his demeanor, because I say it about all him
- 9:28Speaker 3: about this all the time. It's like he's a steady seed.
- 9:31Speaker 3: He never gets really high. There's flashes of that emotion,
- 9:34Speaker 3: he never gets too low. Sure, there's moments of frustration
- 9:37Speaker 3: that we all have, but the guy recalibrates so quickly
- 9:41Speaker 3: and he's so calm that it allows me to lean
- 9:46Speaker 3: on him, you know, in the most critical moments, especially tonight, Man,
- 9:48Speaker 3: the run game was tough, and we didn't want to
- 9:52Speaker 3: get behind the sticks, and we went into overtime thinking
- 9:55Speaker 3: we gotta throw it to win, you know. And as
- 9:57Speaker 3: much as I wanted to run to win, as these guys,
- 9:59Speaker 3: I'll tell you, I was telling them what last night
- 10:00Speaker 3: I felt like in that moment. We had to throw
- 10:02Speaker 3: it to win, and we had to get the ball
- 10:04Speaker 3: in the end zone. You know, I just didn't want
- 10:06Speaker 3: to settle for another field, but we had to go score.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I mean, Quinn's the leader. I mean he's been leading.
- 10:11Speaker 2: He's been leading us this whole time. I mean, shoot,
- 10:13Speaker 2: me and Quinn used to be rumors. He used to
- 10:15Speaker 2: bully me, tell me, don't they got the trash like
- 10:17Speaker 2: scream an you go to sleep. But I mean, just Quinn,
- 10:20Speaker 2: you know, he just strives to be perfect, but he
- 10:22Speaker 2: wants everybody else to be perfect. But again, who knows.
- 10:26Speaker 2: The Lord is his creator and he can give everything
- 10:28Speaker 2: to him. He just go play fast. You just literally
- 10:30Speaker 2: go out there and just play fast. We're all blessed
- 10:32Speaker 2: to be here, We're all blessed to play a game
- 10:34Speaker 2: that we love. But at the end of the day,
- 10:35Speaker 2: you can't make a mistake in Guy's eyes.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think one of the biggest players on Taxas offense
- 10:40Speaker 1: this season has been the Houston transfer Matthew Golden. He's
- 10:44Speaker 1: had a fantastic season. Had a fantastic game one hundred
- 10:47Speaker 1: and forty nine yards against Arizona State, seven receptions, one touchdown,
- 10:52Speaker 1: including the game tying touchdown in overtime, nine hundred and
- 10:56Speaker 1: thirty six receiving yards this season fifty six a good
- 10:59Speaker 1: chance to get over a thousand and yards this year
- 11:00Speaker 1: against Ohio State next week. Obviously, him and Quinn have
- 11:06Speaker 1: developed a rapport over the past couple of weeks, especially
- 11:09Speaker 1: this season, but also Golden has had some big moments
- 11:13Speaker 1: in some big games this season. So Quinn, yours are sorry,
- 11:16Speaker 1: Steve's Orchisan rather. Was asked about Matthew Golden's ability to
- 11:19Speaker 1: step up and deliver in the big moments.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think that's probably a credit to
- 11:24Speaker 3: Matthew and to Quinn. You know, as a as a quarterback,
- 11:27Speaker 3: you're always trying to find rapport and trust in a receiver,
- 11:31Speaker 3: and as a play caller you are too, and you
- 11:34Speaker 3: know you you earn trust right with with consistency and time.
- 11:39Speaker 3: And I think there's a level of consistency in Matthew's
- 11:42Speaker 3: game that that he's earned a lot of trust in
- 11:45Speaker 3: myself and learned a lot of trust in Quinn that
- 11:48Speaker 3: in a lot of the critical moments, it's it's easy
- 11:51Speaker 3: to try to find him, you know, because you know
- 11:53Speaker 3: he's going to be in the right spot. You know
- 11:55Speaker 3: he's going to be competitively tough h and make those plays.
- 11:58Speaker 3: And I think over time I've learned at least that
- 12:01Speaker 3: the moment doesn't ever get too big for him either.
- 12:03Speaker 3: You know, he remains very poised and composed in some
- 12:07Speaker 3: of the bigger moments that he had.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Taxes will need him against Ohio State next week without
- 12:13Speaker 1: a doubt. In fact, in the last three games Georgia, Clemson,
- 12:17Speaker 1: Arizona State, Matthew Golden has had two one hundred yard
- 12:21Speaker 1: performances one sixty two in the loss to Georgia and
- 12:25Speaker 1: the SEC championship game, eight catches and then seven receptions
- 12:29Speaker 1: against Arizona State yesterday, including a touchdown. He has been
- 12:32Speaker 1: a huge weapon for Quinn Yours in the Longhorns. In
- 12:36Speaker 1: this spite Isaiah Bond returning yesterday leave what one target
- 12:42Speaker 1: maybe two targets in that game. Looking at the stat line,
- 12:47Speaker 1: he did not have a catch and does not show
- 12:50Speaker 1: how many targets he had. But of course the one
- 12:52Speaker 1: I do remember is that interception late in the fourth
- 12:54Speaker 1: quarter in which Arizona State would score a touchdown off
- 12:58Speaker 1: of and tie the game. Texas can find a way,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and I mean with Isaiah Bond's injury. This may just
- 13:05Speaker 1: go back to the fact that you know, he has
- 13:06Speaker 1: not been able to practice as much, so quin Yours
- 13:08Speaker 1: just does not have that chemistry with him. But you'd
- 13:12Speaker 1: like to see Isaiah Bond kind of get involved more
- 13:16Speaker 1: in the offense going forward. And even Gunner Helm was
- 13:19Speaker 1: not used as much as we thought he would against
- 13:21Speaker 1: Arizona State until late in that game. Three catches fifty
- 13:25Speaker 1: six yards as long as the day that twenty five
- 13:27Speaker 1: yard reception I think he had. The last two catches
- 13:31Speaker 1: also came in the second half before that. Texas, if
- 13:35Speaker 1: they can find a way to get Helm in Bond
- 13:38Speaker 1: involved along with Matthew Golden, it can make the offense
- 13:41Speaker 1: a little bit more dangerous. But of course a lot
- 13:44Speaker 1: has to do with how they're able to run the football.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And Steve Sarkisan was asked about Texas not being able
- 13:49Speaker 1: to run the football against Arizona State. Fifty three total
- 13:52Speaker 1: yards averaging one point eight yards per carry.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think one kind of limited ops.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I mean, we played four quarters and two overtimes and
- 14:02Speaker 3: only ran sixty plays tonight. And that's part of the
- 14:05Speaker 3: run game is finding a rhythm and we just couldn't
- 14:08Speaker 3: quite get the rhythm and the flow of the game
- 14:11Speaker 3: the way we wanted it to go. I thought they
- 14:14Speaker 3: did a good job with some of the movement. I
- 14:15Speaker 3: thought they did a nice job kind of on the
- 14:18Speaker 3: back side of things when we were ready to make
- 14:20Speaker 3: some cuts and then you feel like it's maybe a
- 14:23Speaker 3: gain of six, seven eight yards. We were getting three,
- 14:26Speaker 3: and it was kind of a little frustrating. But you know,
- 14:32Speaker 3: I think ultimately we got to find a way to
- 14:35Speaker 3: be a little bit more efficient on first down. Four
- 14:37Speaker 3: yard runs are good for us, that's okay. I just
- 14:41Speaker 3: felt like we just didn't have enough ops and that
- 14:43Speaker 3: was probably the most frustrating thing to where we could
- 14:46Speaker 3: really get going, you know.
- 14:47Speaker 4: I mean, I'm looking at.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Jane Blue only had four carries and Trey had eighteen.
- 14:52Speaker 3: But we need to be better, and we got to
- 14:54Speaker 3: analyze that. They were a quick, athletic front that did
- 14:57Speaker 3: a nice job. As I said, you know, the safeties
- 14:59Speaker 3: were aggressive and they got us on the ground. You know,
- 15:02Speaker 3: I give them a lot of credit. They didn't play
- 15:04Speaker 3: for over twenty days, and I thought they tackled pretty
- 15:06Speaker 3: good tonight. They got us on the ground.
- 15:08Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Steve sar Ekesion and other Texas
- 15:10Speaker 1: players throughout the third hour, as we'll be back to
- 15:12Speaker 1: wrap up Hour number two here on The Craigway Show.
