Transcript
- 0:03Hey guys, this is the Daily Ripples, and it's Cory, and we got Pastor Mike in here.
- 0:09Today is September 8th, living under God's care, the stone.
- 0:15Freedom begins when I stop fighting for control.
- 0:17It had trust my life completely to God.
- 0:20Practical.
- 0:21Today I will surrender what I cannot carry alone.
- 0:24Worry, fear, and self-reliance only exhaust me.
- 0:27Peace grows when I trust God with today's burdens and faithfully do the next right thing.
- 0:34Spiritual.
- 0:36As I place my life in the Father's hands.
- 0:38The Holy Spirit replaces fear with quiet confidence.
- 0:42Following Christ's example of trusting the Father in every circumstance.
- 0:46I discover that surrender is not weakness, but the doorway to lasting peace.
- 0:51You know, always, I always think like, I mean, like, you know, mess something up.
- 0:56You know, because like, you know, you wrote this and I'm like, I might mess this up.
- 1:01Anyways, but that's okay.
- 1:03You know, I'm not shy about correcting either.
- 1:06Yeah, no, we just had to move the mic closer to me, so I could be more heard since I'm a quiet talker.
- 1:12I'm like the pastor over here.
- 1:13Matt.
- 1:15And you know, it was funny we were talking about it before this before we recorded and he goes, I'm more naturally.
- 1:21And I was thinking of my money, I naturally, that's a learned behavior.
- 1:25You didn't come out of the womb talking like that.
- 1:27Anyways, well, I mean, so like a voice, you know, level and projection, obviously, you know, you can't really train up. Now, the ability to speak and project even more, you know, directly, of course.
- 1:42Yeah, that's definitely a trained.
- 1:44Yeah. It's your ref. I was the thought.
- 1:46I'll give you credit.
- 1:46Yeah, you're right.
- 1:47You're right.
- 1:48Credit where credit's due, man.
- 1:49It was, uh, well, when I when I was reading this, the, since today I will surrender when I cannot carry a loan and then, and the Galatians, uh, 6, verse 2.
- 2:03It says, carry each other's burns, and in the way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
- 2:08If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
- 2:13Each one should test his own actions.
- 2:16Then he can take pride in himself without comparing himself to somebody else.
- 2:21But, you know, I thought it was interesting at the beginning of that. It says, keep carry each other, carry each other's burdens.
- 2:27You know, because yeah, human interaction is so important.
- 2:30Because if we don't have each other, then it's just me.
- 2:33And I know what me does.
- 2:35And like, you know, I think, you know, if God is everything, God, which I believe God is everything, you know, everybody's just a manifestation of God.
- 2:43So and kind of reflects to that in the big book, it says, you know, the great reality deep down within. So if the great reality is deep down within me, the great reality is deep down within you.
- 2:53So if all that, you know, but I need to have interaction for that to happen.
- 2:58I don't have to have interaction for life.
- 3:00I need to have interaction to be able to be of use to others to show love and to show like, you know, to carry each other's burdens, to do that, to have that action happen.
- 3:09Um, and how important that is because, you know, I don't know about you, but when I 1st drank.
- 3:15I uh, I was behind this church.
- 3:19You know, there's a church off ....[train horn sound effect]
- 3:23I just named out the city and state and everything.
- 3:26It's crazy, but anyways, but there's a little tree line, and there's a little tree line beside it, and we got all our friends, brothers to buy some beer.
- 3:34And I, uh, man, I've had like, I used to tell people I had 8 or 9 beers that night.
- 3:42And for a 13 year old that's kind of hefty.
- 3:44Yeah.
- 3:45I really only had 5 or six.
- 3:47So we're going to be real about this.
- 3:49We appreciate the honesty.
- 3:52It only took you about 20 years.
- 3:54Well, you know, I used, because, you know, I've had 2 different stories.
- 3:57Yeah, right?
- 3:58And when I used to tell my story.
- 4:00I used to be like, yeah, I hate or not, and you know, because I was still, I mean, I'll let my, I'll let my ego go a little bit too, sometimes, and I don't mind it.
- 4:08I'll just let it flow.
- 4:09And, but, you know, I think it's, I'm coming back and I'm, it's funny.
- 4:13my story though, I'll be like, well, I used to say this, but this is what really happened.
- 4:18Yeah. Uh, so we're behind this church and I had 5 or 6 beers and I had to throw up.
- 4:26And I did throw up and we had about 8 or 9, 13 year old kids running around, you know, just active fools because, you know, this is like one of our 1st times ever drinking.
- 4:37And you can imagine some 13 year old kids drinking.
- 4:39They're just getting wild.
- 4:41And, uh, but yeah, I was throwing up and I didn't want them to tell, I didn't want to tell them that I was throwing up because I've had too much to drink.
- 4:50I told him I had to rock him up here.
- 4:53And, you know, another friend of mine woke up in his front yard that morning he got grounded for the whole summer.
- 5:00Oh, yeah.
- 5:01And then my parents came back to me.
- 5:04They were like, were you with him?
- 5:05And I said, mom, I would never.
- 5:08That's right, yeah.
- 5:08Never do something like that.
- 5:10That's crazy.
- 5:11Those kids are bad.
- 5:12Anyways, um,
- 5:13So, but my point was, but that night, that feeling, that feeling of that night, I felt a part of.
- 5:20Yeah, I felt like everybody we were, you know, everything made sense in life and we continued on.
- 5:26Well, after you're broken and you're just beat down and you come into this room where you hear people talking like you, talking like what you've been through.
- 5:37Yeah, yeah, I think it's important to say that in the 4 to the 1st edition.
- 5:44Maybe 4 to the 7.
- 5:46Oh, this is maybe it's the preface.
- 5:48Oh, yes, the preface.
- 5:50It's the last couple sentences of the preface.
- 5:53And this is kind of important for newcomers.
- 5:55And this is, this should be said in a newcomer meeting rather than people's egotistical, like whole war story broken down into 3 or 4 minutes to sound cool.
- 6:05It says, if you have a drinking problem, we hope that you may pause and reading one of the 42 or 44 personal stories and think, yes, that happened to me or more important, yes, I felt like that or most important, yes, I believe this program can work for me to,
- 6:24You know, and all we're talking about is when you take a drink, you want more.
- 6:27And after a certain amount of time, after you tripped your old lady, or you going to whatever happened to you in your life, right?
- 6:34That you, when you stop drinking and you started back.
- 6:37That's the only thing. Anyways, I don't know why we're on that tangent, but, well, you go ahead.
- 6:44Well, because I think that's where we go when that, those are the links that we go to, the depths that we go to when we're living under our own care.
- 6:51You know, when I'm following my will, then my alcoholism, all my character defects, all of my, you know, everything negative in my character, you know, in the Christian tradition, we would just call it sin, all the sin and the darkness kind of comes to the forefront in my life, and that becomes what controls me and what runs me.
- 7:10And I cannot get out from under either my addictions.
- 7:14I can't get out from under my sin.
- 7:16I can't get out from under those things on my own.
- 7:18You know, I can't rescue myself.
- 7:20Right. A part of.
- 7:22That's what I was getting.
- 7:23The whole wood story was the year.
- 7:27Yeah, yeah.
- 7:27You wanted to feel our new movie, just like the Rams game.
- 7:30Yes, I'm sorry.
- 7:32And the rooms do give us that.
- 7:33And, and, and through, so, and it is, it is related to kind of where I'm going with that because on my own, you know, as an individual, uh, my alcoholism, you know, addictions, my sins, you know, character defects, all those things run my life, and they lead to negative consequences, right?
- 7:54And so, yeah, there and I seek the communion, especially early on in my drinking career similar to yours, I didn't start drinking until I was in college.
- 8:03And, uh, so, but I got to college and I got out from under, you know, kind of the strict, you know, biblical parental, you know, oversight and just kind of went wild, you know, for a little bit.
- 8:15And the 1st time I drank, and it's not, I've never changed the story because it's not an exaggeration or anything like that.
- 8:21But the 1st time that I drank,
- 8:22I went to the liquor store.
- 8:24Luckily, they didn't card me.
- 8:25I bought a 5th of Jack Daniels and ended up drinking the whole bottle in one night, you know?
- 8:29And yeah, that's what only an alcoholic would say absolutely to that.
- 8:33everybody else says, oh my goodness, you know, that kind of thing, but that just proved the point.
- 8:38But so that's what happens when I'm living under my own care, right?
- 8:43And, but it says in our practical ripple that today I will surrender what I cannot carry alone.
- 8:49And in 1st Peter, chapter 5 versus starting in verse 6.
- 8:55And this is funny, because I didn't even realize the verse after the ones I had highlighted is very important as well.
- 9:00because I'd highlighted versus 6 and seven.
- 9:021st Peter 5, 6 and seven.
- 9:04Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God.
- 9:07He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon him, for he cares for you.
- 9:13And this is the new King James version, but check this.
- 9:15The next verse, verse 8 says, be sober, be vigilant.
- 9:19Right. So, I mean, here we have the Bible telling us to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God.
- 9:24In other words, to surrender, not, see, when I use the word surrender, it's not just that I'm giving up, it's that I'm giving over, I'm giving it over to the care of my higher power.
- 9:34It's all you that look like, in a real sense, like going to helping somebody.
- 9:37Oh, absolutely, because my higher power calls me to help his kids.
- 9:42His other kids who were sick and suffering and hurting.
- 9:44Yeah, so yeah, in a practical real sense, surrendering means that I don't give those, uh, those excuses anymore about, you know, like we were talking about, I can't remember if it was uh, earlier today or yesterday talking about, um, you know, the, the, new Sponsey, who, as soon as they get a new job or a new relationship, suddenly they don't have time anymore.
- 10:05because they withdrawn their surrender.
- 10:07They've gotten a little bit enough of a good, good thing in their life that they kind of withdraw that that sense of surrender.
- 10:14And I have to stay surrendered.
- 10:17And staying surrendered is staying doing stuff like this, you know, where, you know, we get together on a random, you know, weekday evening or a Saturday, we spend a couple hours, you know, talking about these things and schedule it out for this podcast, it looks like going to the meetings and looking for opportunities to be of service to other people.
- 10:34It looks like, you know, somebody calling me and telling me that they, um, you know, had relapsed so we're having a hard time and and without a 2nd thought, you know, offering up myself to sponsor them and work, you know, through the book with them.
- 10:47And so all of those things are practical ways that we surrender.
- 10:50Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:51I just think that's important, you know, because, you know, when people use that word.
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:58It's like, oh, if it comes a buzzword, I just surrender.
- 11:01what does that mean?
- 11:02Because, like, you know, I don't even think they know because, you know, I've asked people.
- 11:06I'm like, you know, man, just, you know, give it to God, just surrendering. I ask him, I'm like, what does that look like?
- 11:12Yeah. What is it?
- 11:13what do I do up here?
- 11:14What, I mean, I'm pointing out my head, but like, what, you know, and they don't know.
- 11:18Most people don't know.
- 11:20And most of the time when people are saying that they need to surrender something or they need to give it over to God, they're talking about something that has them in some form of emotional distress.
- 11:28Yeah, we have a problem. Right.
- 11:30And we were talking about that yesterday, that the people who, you know, have the emotional distress and the problems and they focus on those all the time and they stay locked up in self.
- 11:39And the solution, the surrender, like we've been talking about, is to pick up the phone and call somebody else who's in the program, to offer to help, to show up early to a meeting, to make the coffee, you know, or take out the trash, or, you know, whatever the case may be.
- 11:51I, uh, the last piece I was thinking about and I was reading this and It said, uh, as a, as a place my life in the father's hands.
- 12:02Uh, no, it's the talk.
- 12:05Today, no, it's then the practical.
- 12:07Today I'll surrender what I cannot carry alone.
- 12:09worry, fear, and self-reliance only exhausts me.
- 12:12When I think about that, when I surrender, when I cannot carry alone, you know, on page 84, the big book, it says, this, to do, it says, continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resent interfere. When these crop up, we ask God to remove them at once.
- 12:29So at that moment, right?
- 12:31As I'm asking God to remove it at once.
- 12:33I'm not, I'm not, I'm not carrying a limb because I brought God into it.
- 12:38Right, right.
- 12:39And when it goes on to say the practi- or the practical, it says, worry, fear, and self-reliance only exhausts me.
- 12:46Well, they do exalt me.
- 12:48And they have my whole life.
- 12:49And that's why I was talking to do this morning and ask him.
- 12:53I said, what is your mornings look like?
- 12:55There's a newer guy and he said, well, you know, I wake up, take a shower, you know where I'm going with this.
- 13:03But, you know, and I'm not going to go in the whole awaking thing, but I'll tell you on page 88,
- 13:08It tells me if I do this stuff every day what my life looks like on page 88.
- 13:13It says, we are in that, we are in them much less danger of excitement, fear, angry, worry, self, pity and foolish decisions.
- 13:20We become much more efficient.
- 13:22So I'm not exhausted because I'm, you know, and it goes on to say, we become much more official.
- 13:27We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when I was trying to arrange life to suit me.
- 13:35And it says all right, whatever.
- 13:37But, you know, when I'm when I'm living on that basis of God.
- 13:40And bringing God into my life. And I'm asking God to come in because I can't handle this stuff alone.
- 13:46I think that's important because like, you know, if I'm bringing God in, it's not going to hurt.
- 13:52It might not help, but it's definitely not going to hurt.
- 13:55So, you know, I might as well just try every time.
- 13:57Well, and I've been doing
- 14:00I've been practicing, I should say, surrendering and turning things over to God for, you know, quite a few, you know, years now, both in the program outside of the program.
- 14:11And what that has resulted in for me today is I have a happy marriage.
- 14:17I have a peaceful home.
- 14:20I have your strong or rebuilding relationships with the people that I love and care about.
- 14:25And I've gained those things through this program and through following these instructions through practicing these principles and all my affairs, and by continually turning over my troubles to God, you know, in prayer, and then listening for where God is prompting me, hey, go and do X, Y, and Z, and then go in and do it.
- 14:46Man, that's with a prayer.
- 14:48Yes, sir.
- 14:49Father God, I place my life in your care today.
- 14:53Through your Holy Spirit, teach me to trust you more completely with each step I take.
- 14:59Shape me through the example of Jesus and keep me, keep me faithful.
- 15:04You're to your will.
- 15:06Amen.
- 15:07Amen.

- 15:26You can find it.
