Transcript
- 0:12Hi, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:14Football Friday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:18We're glad you're starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:20Trent Condon, Ken Miller, we will talk sports with you right
- 0:23up until 2:00. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:27program. At the bottom of the hour, we
- 0:30will be joined by Tom Keikert. A lot of news with Keikert.
- 0:33We will recap the Iowa women from last night, the Iowa men
- 0:36from last night, obviously take a look ahead to the senior day
- 0:40at Kennick Stadium. Michigan State on the other side
- 0:42of the field, final home football game of the year for
- 0:45the Hawkeyes. We'll talk to Tom Keikert about
- 0:48that at 12:30. At 1:00, Eugene Repay is here
- 0:51from the Des Moines Register. He covers Iowa State final home
- 0:54game at Jack Trice Stadium. So we'll do that.
- 0:57We'll do the Iowa State women Iowa statement.
- 1:00I think Eugene is headed to Vegas.
- 1:02Are you aware? Of that, you mentioned that
- 1:04earlier in the week. He is lucky Duck, Yeah.
- 1:07It's going to be fun and he's a hoops guy and he's there's
- 1:10plenty of hoops on display that weekend, no doubt about that.
- 1:13So we'll talk to Eugene, Eugene repay on Iowa State topics to
- 1:18kick off our number 2 and then Mike Palm off to Vegas.
- 1:20We will go. Vegas is a busy, busy place as
- 1:24it normally is. But this weekend going to be
- 1:26bananas with the Grand Prix on the Strip.
- 1:29The Neon City Festival on downtown is the downtown Las
- 1:33Vegas. Hotels get together and try to
- 1:35come up with something to compete with the Grand Prix.
- 1:40And they've done well. They've got a great bunch of
- 1:42free concerts on Fremont Street. God, I love Fremont Street.
- 1:46Isn't it so fun? Trent and folks, Circa is our
- 1:49primary sponsor. I want to get that out there.
- 1:53We love it, absolutely, and I've stayed.
- 1:56I think I counted 2624 properties.
- 2:00You got a lot more than I do. Right.
- 2:01And and for the longest time till we formed our relationship
- 2:04with Circa, I never stayed downtown.
- 2:06Wouldn't stay anywhere else. Wouldn't stay anywhere else.
- 2:08So much fun anyway. So Mike Palm will make our pick.
- 2:11Circa Sports also sponsors those.
- 2:14We will do that about 10 minutes before 2.
- 2:17Who won the week last night or last week?
- 2:19Did I beat you by 1? No, I went three and two.
- 2:21You went two and I. Was two and three.
- 2:22You were three and two. OK, so it's your tee box this
- 2:26week. Tightened it up a little bit.
- 2:27You're 3326 and one. Yeah. 8:00 and 4:00 with your
- 2:30best bets. Yeah, I am 3128 and 1, seven and
- 2:33five with my best bets. So A2 game lead for you.
- 2:36And I think we put another game or two on the boys in the
- 2:39afternoon and I think we might be up 7 in that.
- 2:42Head to head, still a long ways to go.
- 2:44No, I know, I know. We're out of football still in
- 2:46front of us with you. Don't be counting the
- 2:48championship. Nope, nose to the grindstone boy
- 2:50was just watching this play last night.
- 2:52This Will Anderson dude. Oh, absolutely.
- 2:55He doesn't get enough credit. He enough when people are
- 3:00talking about the best defensive players.
- 3:02And it's maybe it's because he plays for Houston.
- 3:04You know, I'm, I'm sure that's part of it because there's some
- 3:07really good ones, but this guy belongs in any conversation.
- 3:10For my money, he's a freak. And that Houston defence as a
- 3:13whole, they're physical. They're tough, This Houston team
- 3:17as a whole. Am I going over the?
- 3:19But the FC. Is wide open.
- 3:21Give me that wide open for Houston, though.
- 3:23Why not? Why not?
- 3:26We haven't seen Houston. You haven't seen CJ Stroud be
- 3:29able to pile up the three consecutive games.
- 3:30And we haven't seen him, but you know where we're headed for.
- 3:34Have you seen the 4-5 potential matchups?
- 3:38I mean, if it's the Steelers or if it's the Ravens, they'll be
- 3:41the four seed and they would get the highest wild card, which
- 3:46might be the Chiefs, might be the Texans, might be the Bills.
- 3:51I mean, one of those teams are going to have to pay maybe the
- 3:55Ravens. What we'll see.
- 3:57This Houston team got my attention last night just
- 3:59because of the fact that the AFCI don't think that there's a
- 4:02clear cut. There's no Eagles, there's no
- 4:05Rams. There's a bunch of good teams,
- 4:08but I don't think that there's one that's significantly better
- 4:14than the other Broncos right now.
- 4:15The one seed, will they be after this weekend?
- 4:17I doubt it. The Patriots have a layup.
- 4:21The Colts aren't going anywhere. They played the Chiefs.
- 4:24What a massive game this weekend.
- 4:25And and there's a couple of them, couple of massive games
- 4:29this weekend. So we will get to that coming up
- 4:31here. Did you watch much hoops last
- 4:33night? So I tried to watch the Iowa
- 4:35State women on ESPN. Plus it was a throttle.
- 4:37What a disaster. Well, the game itself was a
- 4:40disaster, but trying to tune into ESP.
- 4:42And I don't think it was just me.
- 4:44I don't think it was because it, what do you call it?
- 4:48Just logged out, just knocked you off.
- 4:50There was nothing nothing. They got to the game late.
- 4:53You know supposed to start at the six first time we saw it was
- 4:55like, I don't know six O 5 and then just technical difficulties
- 5:00one after as if enough enough is enough to heck with it.
- 5:05So anyways, but that was I I wonder if Finley called off the
- 5:10I don't want to call them dogs, just says, you know what, let's
- 5:14take it easy on them because they were absolutely destroying
- 5:17this team it. Was 5218 at the half?
- 5:195218 at the half. There you go. 25 Five after the
- 5:22first quarter, right Knew there was a rebuilding job for Drake.
- 5:25Didn't know. It was quite the.
- 5:27Same because we both believe that this I have state team
- 5:29pretty damn good. Yes, they are.
- 5:31Yes, and Addie Brown, another tremendous performance. 12:15 at
- 5:347:00. And he stopped inside.
- 5:37I mean, Audie Crooks has gone to another level of just her
- 5:40understanding now of the game as an upperclassman, how good she
- 5:43is. But the difference I I keep
- 5:46going back to what they have in the back court with Jada
- 5:49Williams. And she didn't shoot it well
- 5:51yesterday. She is just a completely
- 5:53different kind of point guard than they've ever had before
- 5:56with the speed that she plays at, her quickness.
- 5:58They haven't had a player quite like this.
- 6:00And that's why I think the upside of this team, they're
- 6:03good. They're good most years.
- 6:04Yep. The upside though, when they get
- 6:06into that tough match up in a Sweet 16, when you get to an
- 6:10Elite 8, that there are those kind of athletes that can push
- 6:14you over the edge. Did you see much of the Iowa
- 6:16women? I did too much of it.
- 6:18That was awful, awful, awful, awful basketball.
- 6:22That was some of the worst basketball I have ever seen.
- 6:26Emily Rodriguez is talented. She doesn't know how to play
- 6:29basketball. They have.
- 6:31They have a lot of coaching to do.
- 6:33So they're up. They're up two possessions.
- 6:35I remember 5-6, what it was. She gets the ball, 35 seconds
- 6:39left kind of out on her own. There's two defenders back, spin
- 6:42move, another spin move, stumbles, chucks it up.
- 6:45You have 5, pull it out. But that was how much time left.
- 6:4935 seconds in the first half, 4 consecutive possessions.
- 6:53She gets the ball, isolates, goes, gets the swatted, isolate
- 6:57goes, turns it over, isolate goes, gets the swatted again.
- 7:00Four straight possessions. Just awful, awful, bad.
- 7:03She's talented and they need that kind of.
- 7:05Players She does know how to play basketball.
- 7:07There's a lot of coaching still that needs to and a lot of bad
- 7:10habits. I'm sure that formed on a bad
- 7:11UCF team a year ago. There is a lot of coaching
- 7:14because talent wise, she's there.
- 7:16She's got a lot of talent. She's tough.
- 7:18They need that kind of physicality.
- 7:19I think that's good. And still the first thing you
- 7:22talk about is how ugly that game was being a top ten team.
- 7:25I think Baylor, actually. Has it in their first loss.
- 7:27And analytically, Baylor was 27th at Bartorvic going in.
- 7:31So the analytics did not agree with their ranking.
- 7:34They got to win against Duke right away, first game of the
- 7:36season That I think elevated them.
- 7:38And we found out Duke's not very good either this year.
- 7:40Still, you're not going to apologize for it?
- 7:43And it looks like chitchat, right?
- 7:44Not going to play against Miami. They play them tomorrow in that
- 7:48tournament down there. She will not play against.
- 7:50It so I saw some Twitter because I was I was watching football at
- 7:53that point. Stunky got hurt.
- 7:56She did, but came back. She must have come back in.
- 7:58She played 36 minutes. Yeah.
- 8:00It was later. It was in the 4th.
- 8:01Quarter. Oh, it was.
- 8:02Yes, that she came down and and came down kind of funky on her
- 8:05left leg as she was fading to the left and got fouled.
- 8:08She exit a game before the free throws.
- 8:10So really the story of the game I thought was a was a behind
- 8:13again. She's going to be tremendous
- 8:15still just a sophomore. Maybe should have played her a
- 8:17little bit more last year in comparison, but you know, with
- 8:20her and Stolky inside, you're ahead of so many teams and what
- 8:24they can do. I like chitchat.
- 8:25There's going to be games. I mean, she's 54, she's Lil, and
- 8:29there's going to be games that she's going to get beat up.
- 8:31And that, I think, is the concern with her.
- 8:34Voice, I hawk back-to-back. It's going to be fast.
- 8:36It's going to be great. It really is.
- 8:39They don't apologize for beating a ranked top ten team.
- 8:43I don't think that's going to hold up throughout the course of
- 8:45the year. Still no court victory against a
- 8:47minimum good opponent. They have now Miami.
- 8:50Play Miami on Saturday. That's a 7:00 tip off for that
- 8:54one. Good stuff.
- 8:55All right, let's get Mike in Waterloo.
- 8:56Then I want to talk about another Mike Moe for a few
- 8:59moments. Hello, Mike in Waterloo.
- 9:00How are you? Hey, pretty good, you guys.
- 9:03You know, if you're a wide receiver, please go to Iowa
- 9:05State because you're going to end up in the pros.
- 9:07You remember last year and you said Hutchinson wouldn't keep
- 9:14around to stay with the team, but you know what?
- 9:17He's a darn good player. Higgins is going to be All Pro.
- 9:21Yeah, he's going to be good. Yeah, he's going to be a really
- 9:24good. Addition All pros Tough to do,
- 9:26Mike. Yeah, there's only, there's only
- 9:27two of them, yeah. I know, but he had that fastest
- 9:30guy in the draft last year. He had him beat that guy.
- 9:34The quarterback unders threw him.
- 9:36I did. He had a couple of plays that if
- 9:38he could have just got his feet, footwork down, he would have
- 9:41been able to tap both toes. But they were tough throws, more
- 9:44tough throw. Look, I'm with you.
- 9:45I think Higgins is going to make a lot of money, going to have a
- 9:48nice career in the NFL. Think Jalen Nolas as well.
- 9:51I thought maybe the odd man out was going to be Hutchinson
- 9:54because, I mean, they got some receivers over there.
- 9:57Nico Collins is still. Around and Nico Collins is still
- 9:59around. Kirk is still around.
- 10:00I mean, they got some dudes, but those Iowa State guys got a spot
- 10:03on that roster. They get the quarterback back.
- 10:05Mike. I think this Houston team's a
- 10:07sneaky AFC contender. They can't run the ball, though.
- 10:10They can't run the ball. But you know what?
- 10:11That kid that's running the ball?
- 10:13Yeah. What's his story?
- 10:14He's been a fantasy guy. He's on a couple of my teams
- 10:17deep on the bench, but he, yeah, he's been kind of beat out.
- 10:20Nick Chubb. Yeah, Nick Chubb's washed.
- 10:22Is he washed? He's old.
- 10:23But that offense go back to it was a prime time game, maybe a
- 10:27Monday night game from earlier this season.
- 10:29Remember when they couldn't run the ball inside the five yard
- 10:31line and they kept trying and they just kept running there?
- 10:34The the offensive line's not good enough and that's what I
- 10:36keep coming back to. They were good enough against
- 10:38that ball. Defense might be the best in the
- 10:40league. It might be, yes.
- 10:41It might be the best defense in the league with a bad offensive
- 10:44line, though. You want a bad offensive line in
- 10:45January? I'm trying to talk you off
- 10:48ledge. Don't.
- 10:48Don't waste money putting Texans futures in there, too.
- 10:51Late. Oh geez.
- 10:52Anything else, Mike? Oh well, you know what?
- 10:55I was kind of off on my prediction for Iowa State.
- 10:58Just a touch. The quarterback got hurt.
- 11:01I he's hurt and I hope they, if he can't throw tomorrow, I hope
- 11:05they put in one of those freshmen see if they can throw
- 11:07because that hurts our game when his passes are all over the
- 11:11field. What do you guys?
- 11:12Think Are you ready to turn the page, Mike?
- 11:13Are you ready for Manske to go in there and upsert Roccobeck?
- 11:17I tell you one thing, all I hear about Manske when he was a buddy
- 11:21of mine saw him practicing up. And where is he from, Mason?
- 11:24Algona. Algona saw him practicing.
- 11:27He was. He was awed by him because he
- 11:30said he'd go right and left, throw it on a dime, 50 yards and
- 11:33he's A4540. What is HE63228?
- 11:37Why don't you give him a chance to throw the?
- 11:39Ball, he's going to get his chance before it's all said and
- 11:41done. All right, guys, Happy
- 11:43Thanksgiving, Mike. Yeah, same to you guys.
- 11:45Thank you buddy. Stop by and see Mike tonight on
- 11:48my way up to the you. Should, yeah, we should have
- 11:50made arrangements for that to happen.
- 11:52Maybe next time. Maybe next time.
- 11:53So you've got Liberty tonight. North North Liberty's Liberty
- 11:57High School against Dowling. I hope it's a good game.
- 12:01I really do. You know, you got this Dowling
- 12:04team, they're behemoth. They're built like they normally
- 12:06are, huge offensive line. You got Carter Baird, a
- 12:09sophomore. He's got offers from everybody
- 12:10in the country already, a good offensive line besides him.
- 12:13A loaded running back. Coach Pollock's done a great job
- 12:16again with that young Group A running back and Ian Middleton.
- 12:19He's little in terms of height but not in terms of width.
- 12:23He is thick. He is strong.
- 12:25He's a tough guy dude to tackle. And then he got Liberty on the
- 12:28other side. They're little.
- 12:29They're small in comparison. They don't look like what we
- 12:32traditional traditionally. See here at the 5A level.
- 12:35It's going to look like a 5A4A game. 05 A3 A5A3A Rhys Redding
- 12:41is one of my favorite players to watch in high school football
- 12:43over the last decade. He is incredible.
- 12:45He's 5 foot eight. He runs around, he makes plays.
- 12:49He got really banged up here a couple weeks ago.
- 12:50He looked outstanding last week against Northwest and didn't
- 12:53look like he had any any worse for the wear that he had with
- 12:56that injury. They do so many different
- 12:58things. Scott Chandler, their head
- 12:59coach, the former Hawkeye tight end, is tremendous.
- 13:01I mean to take this group to go up against the had.
- 13:04An underrated NFL. He did, yeah.
- 13:06He stuck around for a while and they are completely different
- 13:10than anything that you will see, certainly at the 5A level.
- 13:13Yeah, a lot of almost everybody spreads it out now.
- 13:15Works out of the shotgun. The way that they go about
- 13:18things, though, it's different. Can they do it against Dowling,
- 13:21though? I have my reservations.
- 13:24I would think that Dowling would win this game and relatively
- 13:27comfortably. But I thought last week we were
- 13:29going to get a shootout and that Liberty defense completely
- 13:32slowed down. Northwest, You know, Northwest
- 13:34quarterback had thrown an interception all year.
- 13:36I mean, he was complete and 80% of his passes going into that
- 13:38one. And their offense looked like
- 13:40they didn't have a clue against a defensive line that they
- 13:43outweighed by probably an average 40 lbs, you know, across
- 13:45the line. And these Liberty kids, they
- 13:48just fought. That's awesome.
- 13:49And they're going to be ready to go.
- 13:51So I'm with you. I hope at minimum we get an
- 13:53entertaining game tonight and we'll have it right here on KXO.
- 13:56Love it, love it, love it. Back to Chandler for just a
- 13:58second. I mean, is is how much credit
- 14:00does he get for this? A ton just watching at the helm.
- 14:06He's been there a couple years now.
- 14:08Yeah. I'm not sure exactly how many
- 14:09years it's been, but just it'll be on tonight.
- 14:11I will IPTV and great work out of the boys association now
- 14:15getting all these guys. Well, you know what?
- 14:17Halftime's tough though, Is it? Oh God, it's tough.
- 14:21Yeah, well, regardless, you're right.
- 14:23What's most important? Go find something to do during
- 14:25halftime because it's tough. What you want is to have these
- 14:29kids to have an opportunity to be on and for years and years we
- 14:33had that. Then it went away and then he
- 14:35had to have Comcast Chicago. And for people on the West side
- 14:37of the state, you don't get that.
- 14:38Well, I watched it on Marquee Network last week.
- 14:41And it was on there, yes, but now these are available,
- 14:43available and that is a great thing.
- 14:45And to have all the championship events now available over the
- 14:48air in today's environment, no huge good work out of the boys
- 14:51and Boone, great work out of IPTV, a place where funding is
- 14:54being cut all over the place. This is not a huge money maker
- 14:57by any means to make this happen.
- 14:59Great work out of both of those entities.
- 15:01Yeah, Speaking of money being cut, and the Cedar Rapids
- 15:06Gazette, as we said earlier in the week, was purchased by, I
- 15:09don't know, private equity, a hedge fund.
- 15:11So in our in our studio here, we've got we've got a few
- 15:14things, not not a ton of stuff on the wall.
- 15:16We've got the perfection poster when I went went 12 and O and
- 15:21it's the it's the front page of all of those sports sections.
- 15:24There's twelve of them. We talked about this at one
- 15:26point earlier this year, just how spoiled for me.
- 15:32I know not everybody's a newspaper guy.
- 15:35The that the readers subscribers of The Gazette were when you had
- 15:39Mark Morehouse, Scott Doctorman and Michael Loss on the Hawkeye
- 15:44Beat. Yes, think about that.
- 15:45At a small city newspaper. Mall sitting and they're all
- 15:49gone. And as of yesterday, Michael Ox
- 15:51with Michael Loss was handed his walking papers.
- 15:54Tomorrow will be his last day covering Iowa football at
- 15:57Kinnick. His last day is the 30th of
- 15:59November and he was let go after 40 something years.
- 16:02I get it. It's it's the media environment
- 16:04that we live in. Doesn't mean we have to like it
- 16:07and we don't. At least I don't.
- 16:08But the Cedar Rapids Gazette had Halas, Morehouse and Dock think
- 16:14about that roster. That's heavy hitters.
- 16:17Heavy hitters. 3 completely different personalities.
- 16:20Absolutely, Mark. I mean, yes. 3 tremendous
- 16:23writers though, but did it completely differently without
- 16:26it without a doubt that's why it worked.
- 16:28Another reason I'm concerned about this is the Cedar Rapids
- 16:32Gazette has done a tremendous job of what I do high school,
- 16:35school wise. They still cover high schools
- 16:38like they used to be covered. And you worry people, yes,
- 16:41people are at the games. Jeff Johnson, JJ, you know, JJ,
- 16:45big hockey guy and he's all over the place and I see him at state
- 16:49tournaments all the time. And what they've done on the
- 16:51wrestling side with Pilcher, their editor who used to be on
- 16:54the beat, and Jr. Ogden, another guy that is been
- 16:57told I. Think he was like, Oh yeah.
- 16:59Jr. for the wrestling community, as good as you're going to find,
- 17:02him and Pilcher both do a great job at that.
- 17:04KJ Pilcher's incredibly disappointing.
- 17:07Frustrating, but you said it too.
- 17:09This is our new reality. Yeah, it's, it's brutal.
- 17:13So I lost a hell of a career. Obviously, really unfortunate
- 17:18that you didn't get to, you didn't get to end it when you
- 17:22wanted to on your own terms, but sadly, very few of us do in this
- 17:28business, whether you're in radio or in television or in
- 17:33print. God, you just wonder where this
- 17:35is going, Right? All right, Chuck Reid's going to
- 17:37stop by. In fact, he's walking through
- 17:38the door right now. Chuck is the voice of the Drake
- 17:42Football Bulldogs and they've got a, well, final home game
- 17:46coming up tomorrow at Drake Stadium and they've got an
- 17:49event, a food drive. Chuck put on those headphones,
- 17:54take a seat and let's let's get everybody up to speed on what's
- 17:58going on. Obviously, I and Iowa State are
- 18:01both home, which doesn't, you know, work in your favour.
- 18:03But is he, is he turned on? There you are.
- 18:08You're turned on Joe Woodley. What a job.
- 18:12Great job. I mean, I'm not surprised he's
- 18:15he brought the pedigree with them right from Grandview where
- 18:17they went year after year after year.
- 18:20What about this team? Before the season started, did
- 18:23you think that this was the team that could repeat?
- 18:25Yes. Yes, I did.
- 18:27You did. I actually thought, you know
- 18:31what, the transfer portal, it changes everything, sure.
- 18:33And when you bring in a really good receiver from Kansas State
- 18:37and a Titan from Northern Illinois and another utility
- 18:42guy, he started the year at cornerback.
- 18:44He's now playing wide receiver for us.
- 18:45But Zay came from Northern Illinois as well.
- 18:50And when you start getting guys like that, you go to practice,
- 18:52you notice these guys are a little different, you know, and
- 18:55they they've got a little more juice to them.
- 18:57And I actually thought going into the year we could be really
- 19:01good. Now I didn't plan our four
- 19:04string quarterback being probably the second best
- 19:07freshman offensive player in the league, trailing only a freshman
- 19:11running back who was running like fourth team, didn't even
- 19:13play the first game, came into the second game.
- 19:16And now seven weeks into the conference season, he's the
- 19:20conference's leading rusher and so had some really good young
- 19:25guys step up. The transfers have worked out
- 19:28for the most part. The one thing that worried me
- 19:32going into the season was we had a fifth year quarterback who was
- 19:36our spring ball quarterback and then he decided in the summer
- 19:39that he didn't want to play football anymore.
- 19:41So we we had a transfer in young man Chase Spellman from
- 19:46Tennessee State and he looked great.
- 19:48He was fantastic. Well, he gets hurt in the first
- 19:50game, right? So we put in the fourth year guy
- 19:54and he plays 9 plays before he gets hurt.
- 19:56Now all of a sudden you've lost your spring quarterback and all
- 20:01of a sudden here comes his freshman kid from Georgia, Logan
- 20:04in Ogawa. And he's been absolutely
- 20:06fantastic, completing over 70% of his passes.
- 20:09I think he's our third leading rusher.
- 20:12And we went up to South Dakota State second game of the year.
- 20:15And after the game, I'm walking out of the press box, some guy
- 20:17from South Dakota State comes up, he goes, who was your
- 20:20quarterback? I mean, who's?
- 20:22Stepping around already. Well, you know, exactly, exactly
- 20:25that guy's a player and on his number and like, hands off, pal,
- 20:29you know. But no, it it, I knew we were
- 20:33going to be pretty good. Joe and his staff have been
- 20:36terrific. You know a lot of the names
- 20:38people know Kyle Kemp, offense coordinator.
- 20:41Kyle's had one bad game. That's it.
- 20:44Joe Evans, the the Vine coach, Yeah, Joe's fantastic.
- 20:49Those guys would run through a brick wall for Joe.
- 20:51We're trying to get Joe to put the pads on one more time, but
- 20:54he won't do it. But.
- 20:56It must have been a low when we play for McCartney.
- 20:58I'm trying to. That was the bull year.
- 21:00That was their bull win. Woodley.
- 21:02Woodley was on McCartney's team. Oh yeah, and the team that beat
- 21:06Pitt 2002 thousand in the inside bowl.
- 21:10Did he play in that? He scored a big touchdown
- 21:12against? I win Cyhawk.
- 21:14That year 1 yard run, he'll tell you is that what it was?
- 21:16Anytime you ask him, he'll tell you all about it.
- 21:18Well, here's what you need to do for me.
- 21:20Tell him hi 'cause I'm a big fan of the Woodley family his dad,
- 21:23Mike used to call. Him.
- 21:23Well, Andy, Andy's I, I don't know Andy's exact title, but
- 21:28he's at practice and all the games, so he's kind of a
- 21:31consultant, I guess you'd say it.
- 21:32Well, his pops used to call into me and Dire all the time on the
- 21:36jock, so I took a liking to him then.
- 21:38All right, let's talk about the food drive in our final couple
- 21:40of minutes here so you can get free admission of the game
- 21:42tomorrow. Here here's the deal.
- 21:44All you have to do is bring one non perishable food item and all
- 21:50the food donated is going to the Des Moines Area Religious
- 21:54Council Food Pantry, the Demark Food Pantry.
- 21:58And the way we were joking about it yesterday was OK.
- 22:02Say you go to a store. Whatever.
- 22:06Costco, whatever. OK, you buy a case of green
- 22:09beans. Yeah.
- 22:12What's that cost you, I don't know, 8 bucks, 8 bucks maybe.
- 22:16Well, it gets 24 people into the game.
- 22:18So, you know, it's one of those deals.
- 22:20But I, I got a memo today and they're looking for dried and
- 22:23canned beans, canned vegetables, canned fruit, peanut butter,
- 22:26canned meat, whole grain cereal, pasta sauce, all the non
- 22:30perishable items. They're looking for those.
- 22:32And at this time of year, that's really important.
- 22:34With Thanksgiving coming up in the the Christmas season, a lot
- 22:38of people need some help right now.
- 22:40And this is an easy way to go watch a football game where.
- 22:43And the sun's going to be out tomorrow.
- 22:44It's going to be 58° beautiful and that's fine with me.
- 22:50I wish I had that last week, but because last week we had to
- 22:53broadcast outside 40 mile an hour wind.
- 22:57I'm still recovering but no kick off is at noon.
- 23:02I know the other guys are playing, unfortunately for us,
- 23:05but hey, it's the only game you're going to see where the
- 23:09home team, your team, Drake's hometown, Des Moines, hometown
- 23:12teams can win a championship and it'll be our third straight and
- 23:17they'll all be solos, no ties, no Co champions.
- 23:21It would be outright champion, outright champion to win
- 23:24tomorrow, outright champion. So it's going to be a special
- 23:27afternoon. Lot of fun.
- 23:29It costs you a can of whatever. Green beans.
- 23:32Whatever canned fruit, whatever to come to the game, Chairmans.
- 23:37And not even with the soup French.
- 23:41Onion. There's nothing worse.
- 23:42Green beans in the can just disgust me anyways.
- 23:45I'm a big fan. Enjoy, Thanks for popping in.
- 23:49Tell the Woodleys Hi. Congrats on the success of the
- 23:51team this year. Cool story about the four
- 23:53Stringer. And then playoff bid.
- 23:55And then the playoffs. That'll be Sunday morning.
- 23:57And you'll find out Sunday morning.
- 23:58Correct. The playoff selection show
- 24:01Sunday morning, I think it's ESPN, 11:00 in the morning.
- 24:05We're going to gather as a team if we're fortunate enough to to
- 24:09be the one and, and I'm 90% sure we are.
- 24:12But yeah, that'll be Sunday morning, 11:00.
- 24:15But tomorrow noon, kick off Morehead State teams on four in
- 24:18a row. They've come on here late.
- 24:20If there was a point spread, who would be favored in this game?
- 24:23Drake would be, I would guess, somewhere around a touchdown.
- 24:27There'll be a spread tomorrow. They're well Morehead States won
- 24:30four in a row. Yes.
- 24:32And they're they're playing really well and they're
- 24:33talented. The only team in our conference,
- 24:35it really takes a significant number of JUCO players and so
- 24:40they're not bad and it's going to be a battle.
- 24:43But we've had a great week of practice and I really look
- 24:45forward to tomorrow. Good stuff.
- 24:47I hope that a lot of folks can get out there and support that.
- 24:50There was very. Worth last chance.
- 24:51That's it. This is it.
- 24:53Curtain comes down. Thank you, Chuck Reed.
- 24:55We'll be back. Tom Caker joins us next.
- 24:57Miller and Condon underway. It's a football Friday on the
- 24:59Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon welcome back
- 25:13Iowa sports radio network Des Moines sports station one O 6.3
- 25:17K exit O Trenton 9 till 2 Eugene repay on Iowa State kicks off
- 25:21our number 2M Palm VP of operations at circus sports.
- 25:24Our plays of the week coming up as well.
- 25:27Let's get Tom Cacard in here. Hawkeyereport.com Tom Trenton,
- 25:32Ken, thanks for coming on. Before we get into football and
- 25:34Hawkeye related topics, a good buddy, yours guy spent many
- 25:38shared many press boxes with over the years.
- 25:40Michael lost just the latest to be shown the door, for lack of a
- 25:45better term, not for anything he did.
- 25:48Just got caught up in in financial matters.
- 25:52So we've seen in the past, you know, when a long time beat
- 25:57writer, somebody on the beat, this is their last day.
- 26:00Usually one of the coaches recognizes him at a press
- 26:03conference. I would be shocked if Coach
- 26:05Ference after the game tomorrow doesn't say anything's to Halas,
- 26:09don't you think? Yeah, Mike's going to finish
- 26:13out, though. I mean, he'll be going to
- 26:14Nebraska too, so, but this will be the last game he'll cover at
- 26:18Kinnick, but he's going to, you know, finish up and cover, cover
- 26:22the game Nebraska next Friday. So he will be there, but it
- 26:28sucks. I mean.
- 26:29It really does. Company.
- 26:31Company buys, company buys them and they announce it to all the
- 26:37people who work at The Gazette, quote UN quote, family owned
- 26:40company. And 15 minutes later, my
- 26:44colossus told his services will no longer be needed on December
- 26:471st. Jr.
- 26:48Ogden, same thing. It's crazy, brutal, crazy.
- 26:54You know, guys, guys worked there for over 40 years.
- 26:57He's a pillar of the community and that's the way you treat
- 27:01them. I mean, that tells you all you
- 27:04need to know about that, that company that bought The Gazette.
- 27:07Yep, hedge funds, private equity firms, Just brutal.
- 27:10Definitely is. Well, we turn to what you and
- 27:15Halas and the rest of the crew will see at Kinnock Stadium
- 27:18tomorrow as Michigan State comes to town.
- 27:20Boy, just going through the numbers.
- 27:22I thought they were going to make a leap this year.
- 27:24I thought there was a big step forward and it just has not been
- 27:27the case. Awful on both lines.
- 27:29That offensive line, as bad as you're going to find in the Big
- 27:3110. Aiden Childs has regressed A
- 27:33coupled maybe with that offensive line.
- 27:35It's just it's bad all over the place.
- 27:37Does this thing have blowout written all over you?
- 27:39I know you like to be a little more tepid as I do.
- 27:41I'm usually not the most optimistic Hawkeye fan out
- 27:43there. This thing seems like it is
- 27:46going to be a bludgeoning. Trend isn't the most optimistic.
- 27:51She made some news here today. Breaking news.
- 27:59I heard some stuff like last night that maybe they're both
- 28:04her top 2 quarterbacks might not be able to go.
- 28:08Yeah, yeah, was some some, I don't know if there's anything
- 28:12to it and I haven't checked with our Michigan State guys at all,
- 28:16but it was just something floating around that the Alessio
- 28:21and I'm going to. Butcher.
- 28:21Yeah. I have no idea how you say his
- 28:23name. Either Melosa Bitch or something
- 28:24like that. I don't know how, yeah, I don't
- 28:26know how Dolph's going to do that.
- 28:27But maybe that's maybe that's why they're keeping him out, so
- 28:30Dolph doesn't have to pronounce his name and.
- 28:34Of course, child's being the other.
- 28:36And he's banged up. Was Child's greatest moment so
- 28:40far as a Spartan. The Iowa game.
- 28:42Oh. Absolutely yes.
- 28:45Best I've seen him play right. That was there was ABC game too
- 28:49where he was really good. Well, that was early in the
- 28:52year, right? Week two, yeah.
- 28:55Yeah. And that's that's about it.
- 28:58And he has regressed. And it was that was the bat.
- 29:03You know, when you took Jonathan Smith, you're bringing this this
- 29:06hotshot quarterback that was going to be really good and, you
- 29:10know, be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big 10.
- 29:12And everybody was all excited about him and he has just turned
- 29:16out to be a dud. And yeah, I, I'm wondering if
- 29:21Smith's going to. How would you like to be in
- 29:23Michigan State? You could have had Kurt
- 29:24Signetti, probably. Yeah, that's a swing and a miss.
- 29:28Yeah, that that's a little remorseful, is it not?
- 29:31Because if you're if you're Signetti, that was the same
- 29:34time, yeah, you're going to take the Michigan State.
- 29:37Job, right? Yes.
- 29:38Absolutely not a dud, right? Yes.
- 29:40And, and they just went for, you know, Jonathan Smith and.
- 29:44D'antonio had that team in Rose Bowls.
- 29:47Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's there's no question
- 29:51that's not isn't that something? So Trent and I were speaking
- 29:54earlier in the week. Well, Trent brought it up.
- 29:56I I had no idea it had been that long since I was had a 200 yard
- 30:00passer in a game. Does this one feel like maybe
- 30:05there's a chance that that streak gets broken?
- 30:07I mean, I, I don't know you've, I'm not sure you ventured over
- 30:11the other side of the river and taking a look at some of those,
- 30:14some of those props that are available.
- 30:17But I, I, I don't think it would be anywhere near 200.
- 30:19But might this be it, regardless if you've looked at it or not,
- 30:22Tom? Yeah, I think this is the game.
- 30:25I do. I, I told, I told a friend of
- 30:28mine that last night at the basketball game, I was like,
- 30:31this seems like the let's just air it out, let's have some fun,
- 30:37let's score some points, leave forever, you know, just air out
- 30:41some frustrations, if you will, from the last couple weeks.
- 30:45And yeah, try and make a try and, you know, do something big
- 30:51in this final game of the regular season at home.
- 30:55And I, I, I could see Granowski going over 200 pretty easily.
- 31:01And yeah, I, I've not ventured over there yet.
- 31:06So I I that's one of the things I need to do this afternoon.
- 31:09I got a little snapshot here for you.
- 31:11This is from FanDuel 137 1/2. That's the number there for
- 31:15Granowski passing yards. So just file that one away,
- 31:18maybe for later or for our friends.
- 31:20Smells like an over. Smells like an over.
- 31:23So Tom, let's say I will finish the deal.
- 31:26They bounce back, get a big win this week.
- 31:27They beat Nebraska on Black Friday.
- 31:29Is it Tampa? Is that the bold destination?
- 31:32It's been a while. Which every single year.
- 31:34Is it Tampa? And selfishly, would Vegas be
- 31:37off the table? Yeah, I think.
- 31:42I think it would be Tampa if they if they went out, if they
- 31:46went out. Now if Nebraska beats Iowa, I
- 31:53think, I think Tampa would be more than happy to take
- 31:56Nebraska, OK? I do I because.
- 31:59I think they know that, that the Nebraska fans would show up,
- 32:02yeah. Yeah, they would.
- 32:04Yeah, they would want them for sure.
- 32:06And that probably bring. They probably bring.
- 32:08You know, 2530 thousand. Yeah, but they would, yeah.
- 32:11And. Most of them would drive.
- 32:14Yeah, they're they're. Just one of those.
- 32:16Fanbait not there's anything wrong with that.
- 32:19No, they're just probably. Going to so we'll.
- 32:22Talk to you on Wednesday if you're scheduled out.
- 32:23So I don't want to get ahead of myself to that game, but Latif
- 32:28gives him a chance, I think right to be.
- 32:30I was. I've got to tell you, I was
- 32:31really impressed. I get it was UCLA and I want to
- 32:34see how he plays tomorrow against Penn State.
- 32:36And we're getting ahead of ourselves to talking about
- 32:39Nebraska game next week. But Latif impressed me.
- 32:41Tom, I don't know if you had a chance to see him or not.
- 32:43Yeah, I did. Did you?
- 32:45I did. And I thought I.
- 32:46Saw when he came in the the USC game too, and I thought he was
- 32:49he was really good dare I say maybe.
- 32:54And then then baby Mahomes, you know, is so I, I'm, I'm actually
- 33:02a little more worried about that game because he's going to play
- 33:06and I was with with Rayola. And I wonder if the Rayola
- 33:12family's wondering about that after his brother decommits from
- 33:16his commitment. He was supposed to sign with
- 33:18Nebraska here shortly and he is not signing now.
- 33:21And I wonder if that's what you know so that the.
- 33:26And the Taylor. Kid in the class in the 27 class
- 33:29he was really good too so that they've got committed already.
- 33:32So I'm wondering if there's some some thoughts to be connected.
- 33:39We're gonna. Maybe we'll see some movement.
- 33:42We'll see. It's gonna be interesting to see
- 33:43what happens with the rail. There's there's been some like
- 33:46rumblings that maybe the the uncle who's the align coach
- 33:49might be in some trouble. So mm, hmm.
- 33:52But a good unit. What do you jump into?
- 33:56A little basketball before we run out of time next week
- 33:58Tuesday. Huge match up against old Miss.
- 34:01Going to really learn more about this team. 2 easy wins this
- 34:04week. Shot the ball incredibly well.
- 34:06This offense has been historically efficient.
- 34:09One of the tops in the country. Adjusted offensive efficiency
- 34:12that they're playing at, adjusted field goal percentage,
- 34:14all the different things. Against four tomato cans, Xavier
- 34:17proved not to be very good. How optimistic.
- 34:21How, How ready? Maybe that is the right term.
- 34:24How ready is Iowa to step up in competition and face old Miss on
- 34:28TV? You know the fan base is ready.
- 34:30I I. I think we're all.
- 34:32I I, you know, talking to some of the guys last night, they're
- 34:35kind of excited about they're like, hey, I'm going to go up
- 34:39against somebody here and find out how good we are.
- 34:42And they're pretty excited. I was talking to Tavion Banks
- 34:45about that last night after the game and he was, he's like got a
- 34:49big smile on his face. So I think they're pretty
- 34:51excited about going on. I'm anxious to see what they
- 34:55look like against Ole Miss because, you know, Chris Beard's
- 34:58going to have a bunch of junkyard dogs and he's going to
- 35:02have some guys that can play. But they got the well traveled
- 35:05AJ store on that team. They got a guard from France.
- 35:09He is really interesting yeah, AJ stores there now.
- 35:12He's the well travelled. Yes he is.
- 35:14You know, Ben, America's guest in the transfer portal made a
- 35:18lot of money. I'm.
- 35:20I'm actually. Headed out there to the to to
- 35:22cover those games. Are you really nice?
- 35:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:26Going to go out there and then, you know, fly back Thanksgiving
- 35:30Day so we can go out to Lincoln too.
- 35:31So. So I'll be talking to you guys
- 35:34Wednesday from beautiful Palm Springs.
- 35:36You know worse places to be than that, no?
- 35:38Doubt about it, Tom. Great stuff, buddy.
- 35:40Thank you. I'll text you.
- 35:41Thank you, give you time for Wednesday, but we sure
- 35:43appreciate what you do for us, Tom.
- 35:45Thank you, bud. Yep, love it.
- 35:47Yep. See.
- 35:47You good to talk to you, Tom. Cacard hawkeyereport.com Part of
- 35:50On Three Media On Three Media for Tom, that sounds like a
- 35:54pretty good gig. Not bad at all.
- 35:55Absolutely. Palm Springs Ever been?
- 35:58Yes. The airport.
- 36:01It's an outdoor airport. Oh nice, it really is.
- 36:04There's no roof. It's so cool.
- 36:07Yeah, really nice, really cool place.
- 36:08Anyways, take your time out, come back and we'll finish up
- 36:12our #1 Eugene Repay covers Iowa State.
- 36:15He'll be our first guest in our number 2M.
- 36:17Palm is going to join us as well.
- 36:19And then our Pick Circus sports sponsor those Miller and Condon
- 36:22on Des Moines Sports Station 106.3 KXO I'm Miller conjure
- 36:27final segment of our first hour of our program.
- 36:29We've got another one to go. By the way, Bama, Bob had a
- 36:33previous commitment, so he will not be able to join us today.
- 36:37He'll be back Monday and then we'll catch up with him next
- 36:39Wednesday, etcetera, etcetera. But no Bama today to preview the
- 36:43college slate as we normally do. To kick off our second hour,
- 36:47Eugene Repay will be there and said let me ask you about a
- 36:49couple of NFL games because and one in particular the the NFC
- 36:53East battle with the Eagles and the Cowboys.
- 36:56There are so many people that are on this Cowboys bandwagon
- 36:59after what we saw on on Monday night, the Eagles and the
- 37:03Cowboys, they played in Week 1. Did they play week 1?
- 37:06I think it was and that was when Carter spit remember and got
- 37:09kicked out of the game. It was the Thursday night game.
- 37:11It kicked off the. Season.
- 37:13It was Thursday night. Football, the defending champs.
- 37:16That's exactly right. Yeah, you're right.
- 37:19Where do you have an opinion on this game?
- 37:21Not really. I would.
- 37:23Be surprised if Dallas wins the game.
- 37:26I'm with you now. I like the.
- 37:27I like what the. Cowboys did.
- 37:29They're a better team than they were a couple of weeks ago
- 37:32because they got more pieces on defense.
- 37:34They're still not a very good team, no.
- 37:35But I think I mean. I'm looking really for looking
- 37:37forward to Thursday actually, but the, the number of people
- 37:41that are picking the Cowboys to flat out knock off the the
- 37:46Eagles is kind of surprising to me.
- 37:48Maybe there's people out there that have the.
- 37:50Same infliction that I had that I finally got over last weekend
- 37:53as the Eagles are just so boring.
- 37:54It's not fun to watch them. And that's why you, you maybe
- 37:57don't think they're as good as they are.
- 37:59They're so good defensively, Oh my God, And you know that
- 38:01they're going. To get it even though they.
- 38:02Didn't get it twice. They're going to get the short
- 38:03yardage situations and it just it slows the game down, closes
- 38:07the gap. It you have to beat them both
- 38:10physically and just play well on top of it.
- 38:13It's tough to do I I still think Dallas too, and it's one thing
- 38:17to do it against the Raiders. Right, right is a Nepta.
- 38:20Team is Speaking of that boy, there are a couple of stinkers,
- 38:23including Cleveland at the Raiders, but how would you like
- 38:26to be? You're breaking into broadcast.
- 38:29You got an NFL assignment. Yes, right.
- 38:32You got the you got your opportunity to call a game and
- 38:34Trent, we're sending you to New Orleans and Atlanta.
- 38:38I'm in. I mean, I get it, there's only
- 38:4216 games a weekend right at best, but my God, what a stinker
- 38:46that is. Let me ask you about one more
- 38:47game. Colts.
- 38:49Chiefs. I'm kinda at the point where the
- 38:53Chiefs need to obviously stack up wins.
- 38:56I mean, that's not going very far in a limb.
- 38:59Will they beat the Colts this week?
- 39:01Are we sure? The Colts.
- 39:02Are still good. Why would you say?
- 39:04They aren't. Are they turning into a pumpkin?
- 39:07In what respect? They lose.
- 39:10To the Steelers a couple of weeks ago.
- 39:12What's not a very good Steelers no I.
- 39:13Agree, I think I think your. Bears will beat them.
- 39:15You snuck. By crossed the pond against an
- 39:18Atlanta team that's broke. That was really bad, yes.
- 39:21If maybe they're not that they're a.
- 39:22Poor team that they're a bad team.
- 39:24They're just regressing to what they actually are more of that
- 39:27eleven and six type of team and because of that now you go to
- 39:31Kansas City, even off a by Kansas City pissed off ton to
- 39:36play for that we get an incredible effort.
- 39:39Would you be shocked if you look and it's 3114?
- 39:41No, I wouldn't either. I wouldn't, Not for one minute.
- 39:44Now we're waiting, so we're getting back up.
- 39:45Against the wall, wounded. Animal, all those cliches, Yes,
- 39:49Kansas City, we're waiting for. Them to flip that switch it
- 39:52needs to happen but I'm not going to be surprised one iota
- 39:55if we see that Sunday at noon yeah I'm not either I like.
- 39:58The Chiefs because Indianapolis. It's.
- 40:00Good. They're fine football team,
- 40:01They're playoff team. They're not elite.
- 40:03No Bronco fans are in a different.
- 40:05Difficult spot. We have to cheer.
- 40:06We have to cheer for the Chiefs. Well, not in this one.
- 40:10Yes, because the Colts are. Fighting with Denver for the one
- 40:12seat right, But there's a lot of football I.
- 40:14Get it if you're get a root. Don't wait.
- 40:16Don't root now. Wait a while to root.
- 40:19You think I should? Yeah, that makes.
- 40:21It better 'cause I, I, I couldn't bring myself to.
- 40:23I mean, if you're a Cincinnati fan.
- 40:24This week against the Patriots, that would make a little bit
- 40:27more sense. Well, I am a Cincinnati fan.
- 40:29You. Know how I how I feel about Joe
- 40:30Burrow? He's my girl gonna go I.
- 40:33Doubt it. I.
- 40:33Think they save him for Thanksgiving cause it plays
- 40:37Sunday and Thursday. We shall see.
- 40:40We shall talk about the Iowa State Cyclones when we come back
- 40:44with Eugene Rappe covers them for the Des Moines Register.
