- 0:01We strain the water clear and bright, and then feed our
- 0:04thoughts. Whatever's insight, there's a
- 0:07story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:10Chademer 1199 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:14yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:17you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:19This message is dedicated to Doctor Ben Carson.
- 0:22Here's the upgrade. You think you're just staying
- 0:25informed, but upgraded thinking knows everything you let in
- 0:28becomes part of the story you tell yourself.
- 0:31Here's the story about one in three American adults run their
- 0:36tap water through a filter before they drink it, and that's
- 0:39after it's been filtered at the city water plant.
- 0:41We have a hydrogenated filter in our kitchen that we run the
- 0:44plant treated in filtered water through.
- 0:46Everybody worries about what's in the glass and bottle.
- 0:50Then we pick up the bone and pour whatever's trending
- 0:53straight into our heads. Somebody put it this way, the
- 0:56water we drink has to be purified, but look at the trash
- 0:59we feed our minds. Researchers have pulled together
- 1:02dozens of studies on doom scrolling.
- 1:04They can't prove the scrolling causes anxiety, but the two keep
- 1:08showing up together, and even a few minutes of bad news can sour
- 1:11your mood. 1 mother though figured this out long before
- 1:16anybody had a smartphone. Around 1961 in Detroit, 1/5
- 1:20grader named Ben was known as the class dummy.
- 1:23FS were normal AD was a good day.
- 1:27He spent his free time in front of the TV.
- 1:29His mother Sonia had a third grade education.
- 1:32She cleaned houses for a living and she noticed something.
- 1:36The family she worked for didn't watch much TV.
- 1:39They read. So one day she turned off the
- 1:42television and made an announcement.
- 1:45From now on, Ben and his brother could watch 3 shows a week and
- 1:50each of them would read 2 library books every week and
- 1:53hand her a written report on everyone.
- 1:55The boys complained, but she didn't budget.
- 1:58What they didn't know is that she could barely read those
- 2:01reports. She'd look them over and make a
- 2:03mark and hand them back. It didn't matter.
- 2:06She wasn't grading the reports. She was filtering the inputs.
- 2:11Within about a year and a half, Ben went from the bottom of his
- 2:14class to the top. That boy grew up to be doctor
- 2:18Ben Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at John
- 2:21Hopkins at 33 and the surgeon who led the first successful
- 2:26separation of twins joined at the back of the head.
- 2:29Sonja Carson didn't give her boys more brains.
- 2:32She changed what went into them. The better story to tell
- 2:36yourself is I filter what I feed my mind.
- 2:40You don't have to drink everything that comes out of the
- 2:43tap and you don't have to take in everything that comes out of
- 2:46the feed. Guard the glass, guard the gate.
- 2:50Tell me a story of something you stop letting into your head to
- 2:52from chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 2:56what's the first thing you feed your mind in the morning.
