Transcript
- Lucas: Hello and welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Hey Lucas, last time we got painkillers at the pharmacy. Lucas: Yeah, that was Ep 154. Today we're going back to the pharmacy — but this time for something a bit stronger: antibiotics. Luna: Antibiotics, okay. That's a useful one. So, first phrase: how do I say 'I'm looking for antibiotics'? Lucas: Great starting point. You say: Ik zoek antibiotica. Luna: Ik zoek antibiotica. Ik zoek antibiotica. Lucas: Exactly. And that literally means 'I seek antibiotics' — but in English we'd say 'I'm looking for antibiotics.' Say it one more time. Luna: Ik zoek antibiotica. Good. So if I have a wound, how do I say that? Lucas: Ik heb een wond. 'I have a wound.' Let's hear it. Luna: Ik heb een wond. Ik heb een wond. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if the wound is on your leg — for example — you can say: Voor mijn been. Luna: Voor mijn been. So that's 'for my leg.' What if it's on my arm? Lucas: Then you'd say 'voor mijn arm.' But let's stick with been for now. So imagine you're at the counter: you say 'Ik zoek antibiotica. Ik heb een wond. Voor mijn been.' Luna: Ik zoek antibiotica. Ik heb een wond. Voor mijn been. That feels like a whole sentence. Lucas: Yes, and it's natural. Then the pharmacist might ask something, or you can ask: Heeft u antibiotica? — 'Do you have antibiotics?' Luna: Heeft u antibiotica. Heeft u antibiotica. Lucas: Good. And then, when you're ready to buy, you need to ask the price: Hoeveel kost dit? — 'How much does this cost?' Luna: Hoeveel kost dit? Hoeveel kost dit? Lucas: And finally, if you decide to take it: Ik neem dit. — 'I'll take this.' Luna: Ik neem dit. Simple. So the whole conversation: Ik zoek antibiotica. Ik heb een wond. Voor mijn been. Heeft u antibiotica? Hoeveel kost dit? Ik neem dit. Lucas: You've got it. Let's practice each one slowly. Repeat after me: Ik zoek antibiotica. Luna: Ik zoek antibiotica. Lucas: Ik heb een wond. Luna: Ik heb een wond. Lucas: Voor mijn been. Luna: Voor mijn been. Lucas: Heeft u antibiotica? Luna: Heeft u antibiotica? Lucas: Hoeveel kost dit? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit? Lucas: Ik neem dit. Luna: Ik neem dit. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's put it into a little scene. You walk into the pharmacy. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Ik zoek antibiotica. Ik heb een wond. Voor mijn been. Lucas: The pharmacist nods and shows you a box. You ask: Heeft u antibiotica? Luna: Heeft u antibiotica? Lucas: Yes, they say. Then you ask: Hoeveel kost dit? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit? Lucas: They say fifteen euro. You say: Ik neem dit. Luna: Ik neem dit. I got it. That felt really real. Lucas: It is real. And this kind of conversation is really common if you ever need antibiotics in the Netherlands. Luna: Quick honest thing — a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these episodes. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Dutch, that's the way to keep it ad-free. Lucas: Yeah, we really appreciate that. It keeps the show going for everyone. So thank you to those who do. Luna: Okay, back to antibiotics. So Lucas, what if the wound is on my foot instead of my leg? Lucas: Then you'd say: Voor mijn voet. Remember from earlier episodes — voet is foot. Luna: Right, voor mijn voet. So I can swap out the body part. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick review. I'll say the English, you say the Dutch. Luna: Okay. Lucas: I'm looking for antibiotics. Luna: Ik zoek antibiotica. Lucas: I have a wound. Luna: Ik heb een wond. Lucas: For my leg. Luna: Voor mijn been. Lucas: Do you have antibiotics? Luna: Heeft u antibiotica? Lucas: How much does this cost? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit? Lucas: I'll take this. Luna: Ik neem dit. Lucas: Wow, you nailed that. Luna: Thanks. Practice makes perfect. Lucas: Alright, that's it for Episode 155. Practice these phrases, and we'll see you next time for more Dutch. Luna: Doei!
