2:15
the Canawa County Commission has certainly been in the news a lot lately,
2:19
of course, with the problems former Commissioner k Carper has now resigned the election,
2:23
but someone's gonna have to replace Carper on the Commission to finish out its
2:27
term. Commission President Lance Wheelers here to discuss that and other things going on
2:30
with commission. And we're gonna get a Doug scaff snake bite update as well.
2:36
He has been sprung from the hospital and I talked to him last night.
2:40
We're gonna talk to him on the show bus your calls, and Texter,
2:43
welcome to I want to say thanks to the Boss Deal Cooper for filling
2:46

2:50
show. I should be around for a while, well until June fifth and
2:53
June sixth. I'm gonna be off those days as well. So I'll be
2:55
calling in coop for the hot tag there, Jeff. Let's bring in now
3:01
our weekly visits with Hannah Gardner from the Kennel Charlesty Maine Association, with this
3:06
week's Adopt Me Please pet of the Week. Hannah, Good morning and welcome
3:08
to the show. Good morning. How are you. I'm doing fine.
3:13
I'm still still struggling trying to get through this whole sion of this thing.
3:15
Now I've given it to my wife, so so we can we can enjoy
3:19
the long weekend together, you know, with a whole lot of snot how's
3:23
that? I have also thought that too much information. It's it's rough.
3:29
It's been one week today that I've don't you know, don't feel bad or
3:30
anything, just trying to get just trying to get through it all. All
3:34
right, let's talk about our doct me please pet of the week. Woody,
3:38
not Woody Woods, just plain Woody. Uh. Picture posted a Dave
3:42
Alland Radio on Facebook and the Dave Allan Chill on ex Hannah tell us about
3:46
Woody. All right, So Woody came in with a litter of like the
3:52
whole litter was seven of them, uh, and they all loost relatively similar
3:57
to that. Some of them had some brown, some of them are just
4:00
black and white, but not sure what they are or anything like that,
4:03
but they did. They were found at Thomas Hospital and somebody just brought them
4:10
into us. Woody is the last one that's left. Wood He already got
4:15
adopted once, but they were actually found out that they were allergic, so
4:17
they had to bring him back. Yeah, so no fault in his own
4:21
or anything like that, but he is around two months almost three months old,
4:28
and he isn't fixed yet, but he will be fixed, and he
4:31
is a puppy, so somebody that's ready for a puppy. But he would
4:34
be great for a family who's looking for like a family dog or something like
4:40
that, or even I would even consider him to be a good which again
4:44
I don't know what he is, but he gives me like some sort of
4:47
working dog or mountain dog or collie or something like that. So maybe even
4:55
a good one for somebody who's got like a farm and wants to train them
4:58
on that stuff. But he's definitely real sweetie. We took him along with
5:03
his siblings when they were still there to an event, all of them and
5:08
they all were just so sweet, and they would lay around for a little
5:13
bit, but you know, they're puppies, so they would get up and
5:15
play for a good fifteen twenty minutes and then they'd be out for the rest
5:18
of the day. But they they are. He is very, very sweet,
5:23
and he is needing a good home and a good yard to run around
5:28
in. He's a beautiful dog. And again I've got the picture posted as
5:30
always on my social media. It's Dave Island Radio on anexed on the Day
5:33
Island Show, and I agree with you. I'm not an expert on dog
5:36
breeds, but the first thing I thought when I was on when I saw
5:40
the picture of the dog Hannah, was some kind of a working dog breed.
5:44
It's a beautiful, beautiful dog and would make a great pet for somebody.
5:48
As what you were saying, we'll get back to Woody here in a
5:51
couple of months. Do want to remind you that The Day Island Showing five
5:54

6:15
I know you guys got in some puppies this weekend. Seven to be
6:18
exactly need to be fostered. What's the story there. Yeah, so those
6:24
puppies actually I think they have like a skin condition, but it's non contagious
6:30
or anything like that. So they just need a place to rest and a
6:33
place to heal and a place to kind of get a little bit older before
6:38
they're available for adoption. So they're not and they don't have like a mom
6:42
that they're eating off of or anything like that, but they are needing a
6:46
foster. I'm not quite sure if they've found a foster yet or not,
6:48
but you could always call and ask and be one hundred percent sure. But
6:53
they're there were seven of them, and I believe that they are eating gruel,
6:58
so that's just like wet food and formula mixture until they kind of progress
7:03
to be able to eat hard food only. Okay, they're beautiful, and
7:09
again you get pictures of them posted on your social media. I know that
7:12
now that summertime is arriving, it would be a great opportunity to get involved
7:16
volunteeringly, particularly for younger people. Now I was reading on your site you've
7:19
got to be sixteen enough to get involved, but those community service hours are
7:24
very important to you young folks in school. You need some volunteers up there.
7:30
Yes, we always need some volunteers. We've been getting in a lot
7:32
more animals lately. I believe we're actually full as fool as we can be
7:36
with the whole UHUL crash and everything, So we can't use that one section
7:40
still, but we're full up to where we can use so cats and dogs
7:45
both. But we do take volunteers. And if you are under sixteen but
7:50
you're just wanting to come up and volunteer and do some other things that aren't
7:55
like walking the dogs and stuff, you can come as long as you have
7:58
a guardian with you at all times. But yes, you could definitely come
8:01
and volunteer. You can also foster. You can also donate if you can't
8:05
do that, So we're definitely looking for a lot of things at the moment,
8:09
and we definitely appreciate everything we can get. How are your kennel numbers
8:13
looking, Hannah? I note that on Tuesday we had around one hundred something
8:20
dog, so that is pretty close to what we normally would have even with
8:28
the section open. Of course, we would have a good bit more,
8:31
but I think we were at like one seventeen or something like that. I'm
8:35
not sure what we are at today or right now, but I'm sure it's
8:39
still around the same thing because we've been seeing the same thing that we see
8:43
every year pretty much kind of all the time. Now is where we get
8:48
one out and another one comes in, We get one out and then two
8:50
more come in. So it's kind of just like a a waiting game of
8:54
hoping that everybody finds a puppy or a dog or a cat or a kitten
8:58
and a dot them and we can hopefully get a lot of them out.
9:01
Text to the show here, someone wanted to know how are the cats doing.
9:05
What's your situation on cats there at the shelter? Kind of the same
9:09
situation. We have been pretty cool with cats and kittens. I know that
9:13
we have a lot out in foster right now as well that are kittens with
9:18
moms or without moms, so those will be returning. And you know,
9:22
a lot of people will ask us why we have like a cage or too
9:26
open or something like that when we say we're full, but that's solely because
9:28
we have some coming back from foster. And we also try to keep at
9:33
least one or two open for an emergency situation as well. So when we
9:37
say we're full, yeah, we might have one or two open, but
9:39
we already have plans for those ones. So that's usually why we have one
9:43
or two open well. And as you said, you have a lot out
9:46
on foster, and sometimes sadly you had these emergency situations that just happened,
9:50
like with our Pet of the week where you suddenly get you know, seven
9:52
one time right before we let you go. I understand you've got a vent
9:56
going on today at Moses toyot to South in St. Albans. It's a
10:03
care of Van c a r E A Van event. You're gonna have some
10:05
animals out there available for adoption, Is that right? Yes, we will
10:09
be there from twelve to four today and we of course we'll always have a
10:15
lot of animals at the shelter, So if you can't make it out to
10:18
Saint Albans, you always go up to the shelter. But we will be
10:20
in St Albans today from twelve to four. I believe we won't be there
10:24
tomorrow as well, but we will have a lot of puppies. I'm not
10:28
sure if we'll have cast our kittens quite yet. We usually try to figure
10:31
that out right before we leave, to make sure that we have enough of
10:35
everything, which of course we do right now. But we will have puppies.
10:39
We may have a couple of adult adult dogs as well, but definitely
10:43
come out twelve to four and it is on two thousand and one the Corporal
10:48
Avenue southwest in St Albans. All right, all right, we appreciate you
10:54
taking time to be with us. The best of luck with your event and
10:56
have a have a safe Memorial weekend. I appreciate you being here a Hannibal.
11:00
Talk again next week. Thanks a lot. All right again, let's
11:03
go get wood. He adopted Woody, not woods just Woody is our pet
11:09
of the week. Came from a litter of seven found not long ago at
11:13
Thomas Memorial Hospital. He's male, two months old. He was adopted.
11:18
At one pointment they had to bring him back because they found out the adopters
11:22
found out that they were allergic and they had to bring him back. Unfortunately,
11:26
Woody is not fixed she but will be. He is vaccinated and micro
11:30
Chip does great with other dogs. Probably going to be a little bit on
11:33
the larger side his hand and I were talking, probably a working dog kind
11:37
of a thing, so maybe maybe a fifty pound or so dog. Eventually,
11:41
probably going to be a dog that needs a room to run, but
11:43
a super super sweet dog. Loves to kind of hang out with you.
11:46
And again just a if you're this is one of the all animals to me
11:52
are are beautiful creatures. This animal is especially a beautiful creature. If you
11:58
want to go see wood picture, go over to my Facebook page Dave Allen
12:01
Radio or the Dave Allen Show and Axe the Artists formally known as Twitter,
12:05
and let's try to get Woody adopted. He would be a fantastic dog.
12:09
You know, sometimes I like to push the older dog sometimes, but sometimes
12:11
people want the younger once. He's only two months old. Not fixed,
12:15
Shevil will be vaccinated. Microchip loves other dogs, loves kids, loves all
12:20
humans, get out there and let's get Woody home. The Dave Allen Show

12:46
his snake bite injuries from a week or so ago, We're going to talk

This is great. This is my Christmas pointing this. Yeah. It
17:08
was a long, cold, damp winter. This is our just reward.
17:12
It is our twentieth anniversary of the Moses Utter Group Live a Levey. We
17:18
do launch tonight. It is First Responder and Military Night, so of course
17:22
we're going to honor our first responders and our military. We're going to do
17:26
that with some fireworks beginning at nine thirty tonight before we get to the fireworks
17:30
starting at six thirty down and had that Riverfront Park. Something special, little
17:34
something, something for everybody. Something special. Will be jamming and they have
17:38
been jamming and entertaining audiences in the Kannaal Valley for just about a decade now.
17:42
They're pretty jazzy. They like to sing and they like to dance.
17:45
Of course they like to sing, right, they've got to sing. It'll
17:48
be a little dance group. So we'll get things rolling and rocking then at
17:52
six thirty and then I really pretty jacked about this. I look forward.
17:56
I listened to a couple of their tunes on YouTube. Seven forty five.
18:00
They're going to come on stage, center stage. They'll do two forty five
18:03
minutes. That schedule is the same as there's always been guys from years past.
18:07
Groove Marmalade will take center stage. The ultimate dance band. There's about
18:12
eight or nine members. They hail from Toronto up in Canada. They have
18:18
been playing for a blow over a decade and they play everything fifties, sixties,
18:22
seventies, eighties, nineties, today, current hits. They play Latin,
18:26
they got some Caribbean and they're just always moving. They take turns singing,
18:30
they take turns dancing. They got the choreographed. There's a lot of
18:33
activity, a lot of action, and if you like to dance, I
18:37
think tonight dann at Hadad is going to be the place to be. So,
18:41
I mean, when your name is groove Marmalade, you better be groovy,
18:44
right, Yeah, you better be groove. It's not going to be
18:45
a funeral march mart be that. So I'm I'm pretty I'm pretty jacked.
18:49
I think the selection committee did a nice job. You know, we've got
18:53
we're gonna We're gonna go all the way through mid August this year. Again,
18:59
Dave, we say it every week and I'll say it every week.
19:00
Yeah, this might not be your groove tonight, but there'll be a night
19:03
when it is groove. We'll have some country throughout the throughout the season.
19:08
We'll have a little rock, we'll have a little roll, we'll have a
19:11
little different, we'll have a little alternative. We'll have different vibes for different
19:15
audiences. But it's always just fun to come down, grab a bite thee,
19:18
get your favorite beverage, buy a fifty to fifty ticket. We've been
19:23
doing these same five inner city charities for the last nineteen seasons. We say
19:29
Live a Levy's great fun, and it is, but we also say it's
19:33
for a great cause, and we help these five inner city charities, the
19:36
Covenant House Man and Meal RCCR, the Sojourners Shelter, and the Canall Valley
19:41
Collective. All those charities are within the city limits of Charleston, and they
19:45
all help individuals who are looking for maybe a bite to eat and a place
19:51
to lay down at night. We've raised one hundred and twenty thousand dollars the
19:55
last nineteen seasons from this fifty to fifty so it does add up. Your
20:00
dollar and five dollars and ten dollars contribution to buy fifty to fifty tickets does
20:04
pay off and does help. If you don't like the music, that's okay.
20:08
Like I said, come down. The vibe is good, the neighbors
20:11
are good. That just the whole atmosphere, the ambiance, the music will
20:15
be popping. But you just want to come down see your neighbors, enjoy
20:19
the fellowship. The city of Charleston's off to really an amazing start to the
20:25
summer. With that bicycling event last week. We got to see our neighbors
20:29
in This will be very similar yet with music. It was fun having the
20:33
bikers here. Now they parted and now make way for our Live on Levy
20:37
season to start tonight we have I guess it's all the way to August to
20:41
night. I don't know how many weeks that is. Not every week is
20:42
a Live on Levee night, Some weeks are multi fest, some weeks are
20:47
storing realer God of nights. But it's here, Dave, and I know
20:51
you like music. You're a music guy. You're pumped for the season.
20:55
I didn't bring the schedule with me, but you look to some of the
20:56
schedule, anything pop out to you excited, and it all does. And
21:00
that's the thing that I like about it is because again it's something for everyone
21:04
down there, and I love the fact that we for Live on the Levee.
21:08
You bring in people from out of town, but there's also a lot
21:11
of local that was last year something special, obviously local. We do have
21:17
a lot of locals. Jash Josh Pantry local guy headlining on January June the
21:22
twenty eighth. At the press conference two weeks ago. I literally learned about
21:26
the schedule at the press conference, Like everyone else. People thinking, Jim,
21:30
who's playing this year? I got, I don't know. Wait for
21:32
the press conference. You know, I secure partners and I introduced the bands.
21:36
That's my role for the levee. But when I found out next Friday
21:38
night, I don't want to jump ahead next Friday night, May the thirty
21:41
first. When I found out Night Beaver was coming a tribute to Beg's,
21:45
I was beside myself. I can hardly contain myself. I used to kind
21:51
of hide the fact that I was a Beg's band because you know, it
21:52
was kind of a you know, if you didn't know disco. But now
21:56
I at my age, I could give a rip. I love disco and
21:57
I love the Bgs. Thing about the Beches is though, and I watched
22:02
the documentary a couple of years ago about the about the Begs, and a
22:04
lot of people think the Beg's is just disco. They forget that they had
22:08
a crap ton of hits well before Saturday Night Fever Ever came out, and
22:12
that they were unlike a lot of artists of the disco era, Jim,
22:17
they were actual musicians. A lot of the disco stuff was manufactured in studios
22:21
and so on so but they actually played guitar, they actually did the music,
22:25
and the brilliant singers, brilliant musicians. And I've listened to the Night
22:29
Fever tribute band, and it's going to be a special as is as is
22:33
tonight Little Groove Marmalade seven forty five, two sets at nine thirty. Folks,
22:37
The show is not over. We will have fireworks at nine thirty.
22:42
So stick around, Bring the family. I don't care if you're four or

22:53
My mom close enough now, Dave, she walks down to live on
22:57
Levey. Now then that nice eighty seven she walks over. She says she
23:00
likes the music, but she comes to here, Jimmy, she comes to
23:03
hear her son introduce the band. Isn't that sweet? There's a lot of
23:06
people that do that. Well, Mom, if you're listening, I love
23:07
you. So however you get down to Hatad. Tonight is a special night,
23:12
opening night, the twentieth anniversary. Shout out to the Moses family.
23:17
Moses Auto Group also want to thank Lou Wendell Marine, the health Plan,

23:30
the officials and the selection and Jane and Miranda and the mayor and Matt and
23:37
everybody that works behind the scenes, Ray Ray at Parks and rec. I
23:40

24:18
he was running around here saying, you got to talk about the T shirts,
24:22
you know, Steve's I just posted on Facebook on the James W.

Strown site and I'll try to tag Live on Levee as well. But the
24:30
Moses Outter group Live on the Levee T Shirts is presented by East Coast T's.
24:33
Of course a shameless plug for our buddy Steve, but they look really
24:37
great. They're the Live on the Levee Green They've got the schedule on the
24:41
back and the City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Ray raised the director there her
24:45
crew. They tossed these T shirts out during our breaks. The first break
24:49
will be at seven thirty to seven forty five, then our second break will
24:52
be at eight thirty to eight forty five, and we tossed these T shirts
24:56
out. They look hot this year. They look great. I love the
24:59
color little lime greenish. But yeah, shout out to East Coast T's and
25:03
thanks to the City of Charleston and Parks and Recreation. They actually purchased these
25:07
T shirts and toss them out through the season. They're coveted. I never
25:11
see people go crazy for these T shirts. I don't even have one,
25:14
Steve, when I were talking, we don't even have a T shirt.
25:17
But the City of Charleston tosses them out. You can get one if you
25:19
come down to night and you're fortunate enough to get a T shirt thrown out
25:22
by the staffers front. I'll try to get a picture post on my social
25:26
media so people can take a look at it. I appreciate you. I
25:29
appreciate you guys and Dave you having having me in here every every Friday.
25:33
But it's just it's just great that it's back, and this is our this
25:37
is our reward for what we just went through the last you know, four
25:40
or five six months. It was chili, not too chilly, not too
25:42
much, no, but just cold and rainy and cold. Time to get
25:45
out, man, Yeah, it's time to get And by the way,
25:48
the City of Charleston, of course they'll they'll kick off. I think I'm
25:52
correct about this. They'll kick off their outdoor dining. It is in conjunction
25:56
with the levee kicking off tonight. You are absolutely correct. I'm glad you
25:57
brought that up. But outdoor dining in and around the Charleston area tonight.
26:02
So either come down, get a bite deep prior to come over to Levy
26:04
get a bite, or just have a couple of beverages and then go out
26:07
and have some outdoor dining. But enjoy, enjoy with our city of Charleston
26:11

26:15
lots of an alternatives to get out there. Again. If you can't find
26:21
anything to do, dude, that's on you. I think there's a lot
26:22
going on. So thank you to the city and thank you once again,
26:26
Dave. And at fifty eight. All right, man, you go,
26:29
Thanks mate, talk soon, see you next Friday. You'll be talking to
26:30

It's a no for me, dog says Texter. All right, there you

30:56
sir, how are you. Good morning, Dave. Thanks for having me
30:59
on. Thank you for being here. It's been quite a year for the
31:02
Commission, just over a years so ago, the news out with now former
31:06
Commission Kent Carper. Before we talk about moving forward, anything you'd like to
31:10
say about the legacy maybe of Kent Carper. Well, I think we don't
31:14
want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and we need to remember
31:18
what Kent has done for this county. Whether it's our first responders, whether
31:22
it's the complex with the safety complex there, making sure we have a place
31:27
for our sheriff's office and the prosecutor's office, the water projects. I mean,
31:32
those lists go on. But you know what we do today. We
31:34
move on and we're going to look forward and do exactly what this Commission has
31:38
always done. That's being transparent, that's being efficient with the taxpayer's money,
31:44
and making sure that we're doing everything we can to bring prosperity here to Kennell
31:47
County. And I think we're going to do just that. Mister Carper.
31:49
Of course, loss has bid for reelection of the Democratic ticket, losing to
31:52
former Secretary of State in Natalie Tenda. By now we all know the timeline.
31:56
Mister Carper resigned two weeks ago today, which was the priday for the
32:00
primary election. He was still on the ballot but lost Natalie Tenant. Chris
32:02
Walter's won the battle on the Republican side, so now he and Natalie will
32:06
face off in the fall. But before that happens, the commission has to
32:08
appoint someone to finish out Kent. Carper's term has to be a Democrat.
32:13
We know that because that was a party of Carper and has to be for
32:16
magisterial districts one or three. Since you and Commissioner Salango occupy slots from the
32:21
other two, you've been accepting applications. How's that been going? Well,
32:24
I think what we want to make sure we're doing is being transparent about this
32:28
process and looking at every option possible. And so I know Commissioner Slango agrees,
32:32
He's came right here on this show with you explaining that as well.
32:36
And so what we've done is we've created an application process to where you email
32:39
a resume and maybe some words of why you believe you would be a good
32:43
fit for the next seven months as a county commissioner here in Kanola County,
32:46
and so we've been receiving those applicants. Today is the last day. Once
32:51
those have been looked at. We're going to make sure that we Commissioner Slango
32:53
and I individually look at these over the week. We'll meet next Thursday and
33:00
we'll have an open discussion in front of the public, in front of the
33:01
media, and we'll discuss who we believe should be the next county commissioner for
33:06
these seven months temporarily. Now, I don't want to put you on the
33:08
spot here, but we do know that Democratic nomine Natalie Tenant, and she
33:13
said so on this show, would like to be considered for that appointment early,
33:15
filling out their remaining term of carper. Of course, she'd still have
33:19
to run in November, because again, this is filling out that term.
33:23
Is that something that you have thought about yet, well, as far as
33:28
as Natalie Tenant getting that or are you still kind of so I don't want
33:32
to put you on the spot, but are you still kind of weighing it
33:36
all? Well, she's open to apply and we'll consider that obviously, like
33:38
we're going to consider everybody. But you know, Dave, like I said,
33:42
we're being transparent about this. We're looking at all the options that we
33:45
have in front of us to fill the next seven months. What's wrong with
33:47
that? What's wrong with being transparent and not already having a choice with an
33:52
individual that you know, with Miss Tenant, you know, I like her.
33:55
I think she's a great person. However, you know, she ran
33:59
essentially unopposed in a primary. She wasn't on everyone's ballot. You know,
34:02
at the end of the day, I think we need to make sure that
34:06
we allow the elections to work and allow the voters to decide who that should
34:07
be. So we're going to look to find somebody that I believe can fill
34:13
this temporarily, who already has the information and knowledge of how the county works,
34:17
how has the community support. And we have a lot of projects coming
34:22
up. We have the judicial upgrades that's going to be a rough eleven to
34:24
thirteen million dollar project. We've got to get that done now. We just
34:29
had an election for our judicial races. Those individuals will be taking the seats
34:32
in January first of twenty twenty five, and those are three new magistrates and
34:37
one new Circuit judge. We got to find somewhere to put them, and
34:39
this is going to be a difficult task. You know. We've got the
34:43
Capital City Sports Complex, We've got the Hatfill McCoy trails out in Tornado,
34:46
We've got the Clinton and Gravity Trails that's going to be coming in. We've
34:52
got a lot of things moving forward. So we'd like to have somebody who
34:55
can focus their attention on the county, focus their attention on the issues of
35:00
the voters, and allow the voters at the end of the day in November
35:04
to determine who they want to be their next county commissioner and whoever that is.
35:07
I'm sure that Commissioner Slango and I will be able to work with them.
35:09
But again, let's not get political. This commission has never been political
35:14
before. We're not going to do it today. I think Commissioner Slango agrees
35:17
with me. But again, we're going to look at the list and if
35:20
Natalie Tenant comes out to be the best pick, that's probably you know,
35:22
that's what we might move forward with. But let's at least look at all
35:27
the options. What what's wrong with that? And the applications have to be
35:29
in by I guess close a business today or does it midnight tonight? How
35:31
does that work? Said today? Close a business a business? So four
35:35
thirty five they have to be if the email amen, they have to be.
35:38
You know, email has to be received by that particular time. So
35:42
the way it's going to work, as best I understand it is is that
35:45
those will come in and you and Commissioner Selango will will meet and if you
35:47
can't agree, because you both have to agree on it, and they have
35:51
to be some you know, a Democrat and again from those districts that we
35:53
mentioned. But if you if you cannot agree, then it goes to the
35:58
Democratic Executive Committee and then they will send some names and almost he described it
36:02
almost like a jury, like striking jurors. You'll have a list and either
36:07
of you say, okay, I'm taking this one off your I'm taking this
36:09
one off your list. That's the way. It may not come to that,
36:13
but it could if you can't reach a decision early on. Let me
36:15
say that is a moot conversation. Okay, Commissioners Lango and I will come
36:19
to an agreement on Thursday. I have no intentions or even belief that him
36:23
and I will not be able to work together on this. We have always
36:27
worked together in the past, especially during my little over three years of being
36:30
on the County Commission. I know he and I have the same agreements.
36:34
We want to make sure we bring someone in that will work with us,
36:37
be representative of the voters of Kannall County, the citizens of Kenannall County,
36:40
and be able to do the job for seven months and then allow the voters
36:44
the opportunity to pick who they would like to be their next county commissioner.
36:49
This past week, and I had Selango on earlier talk about it too.
36:52
This past Sunday, we had that horrific situation out at Shawnee Park with a
36:55
shooting. Although it was on Smooth Avenue and Dunbar, it was two blocks
37:00
away. We had some obviously some concerns about the security there simply because some
37:05
of the people couldn't weren't able to get out. I know it's something the
37:07
Commission's going to be taking a look at moving forward. Yeah, So,
37:12
first off, a terrible situation, one that was gut wrenching when I got
37:15
the call of what was happening. I think it was actually Commissioner Silanga who
37:19
called me first to let me know, because he was already aware at that
37:22
point. You know, this is his baby. The Shawnee Sports Complex has
37:25
been wonderful for economic opportunity, but to have an event like that is absolutely
37:30
scary, and we want to make sure that we're doing everything we can for
37:32
people to just feel safe, not just be safe, but to feel safe
37:36
as well. And you know, doesn't matter that it was two blocks away,
37:40
four blocks away, those don't matter. It matters that parents were there
37:45
with their kids and that they're they're traumatized, and that's not something we want.
37:51
But let's look at the glass half full for a second day. Nobody
37:53
was injured, nobody was hurt, nobody was severely hurt, and we need
37:58
to remember that and just be thankful for that and be grateful that that's the
38:01
opportunity. However, we also need to look at, well, how can
38:05
we be better? And there's nothing wrong with a government agency saying, hey,
38:08
how can we be better? That's what we want from our government.
38:10
And so immediately we schedule a debrief with the emergency Management, the Sheriff's Office,
38:16
Shawnee Sports Complex, the County Commission. We went over the footage,
38:21
looked at what occurred, how we can be better, what we can do,
38:24
and some of those suggestions have already made forward. We're already going to
38:28
move forward with quotes from vendors, and one of those was just having a
38:31
exit gate that has a pushbar that you can exit out of, but you
38:35
can't come in. And I think that's important because we need people to be
38:38
able to leave in an emergency, but we also don't want somebody coming in
38:43
who's not supposed to be in for safety purposes. So looking at those measures
38:46
and being better is what we're doing. And I can assure everyone that that's
38:51
what we're going to do. We're going to be better, and we're going
38:53
to make sure that something like this never happens again. It's unfortunate that it
38:58
did, but to be optimistic about this and say, hey, we're going
39:01
to make this safe again. And I look forward to those families being able
39:05
to come back on Shawnee Sports Complex and being able to give a sigh of
39:09
relief knowing that they're safe. Now. I think since the last time you
39:13
were on the show, a little personal note here, you've added an addition
39:15
to the Wheeler family. Is that right? Well, you know I've got
39:19
my second daughter. I'm a girl dad four weeks old. Dave. When
39:22
we walked in here, I told you I've got about four hours of sleep.
39:24
So if I've mumbled any during this interview, I apologize to your listeners.
39:30
But thank you very much. And it's a blessing. And you know
39:32
having a kid makes you, especially a four week old, you know,
39:36
when an incident like Shawnee comes in, it really hits you hard. It's
39:38
different, you know, and you hate saying that to somebody who doesn't have
39:42
a kid, but Dave, I mean, you know, it's different,
39:44
and we take this seriously. It's just like if our kid was there.
39:47
And I've got many calls from good friends of mine who they were there with
39:51
their kids, and they said that, you know, they're scared, they're
39:53
traumatized, and we take that seriously and we're going to do everything we can
39:58
to get rid of that fear. Roome's not built in a day. It's
40:00
going to take some time, but we've already made measures and moves and we're
40:06
going to continue to do everything we possibly can, and I think that we're
40:08
going to get to that. We will pulling cost of a day Island show

40:24
you know, when you only have three to four hours of sleep at nights,
40:29
you actually kind of wound up. You get that second wind, and
40:30
you know, we've been just doing a lot of great things at the County
40:34
Commission when it comes to tourism. You know, we're looking at getting our
40:36
cv BE back up and running, being able to provide fundings and marketing to
40:39
bring people here to Conall County. We've got the hat fil mcoy trails with
40:44
the dirt bikes that I mentioned before out in Tornado. We're going to be
40:49
looking at some new things as well, and some of those is for the
40:51
kids. You know, at the end of the day, I think we
40:52
need to realize that we need to do everything we can for our children and
40:57
having that opportunity and especially having that out door experience. You know, I
41:00
know my grandpa always told me you're going to go outside, you're going to
41:04
go play. Well, sometimes you need a place to play. And one
41:07
thing that I've noticed is that some of our parks and rec playgrounds are in
41:12
bad shape and we need to get those fixed. So I think we're going
41:14
to have those conversations looking at what we can do to have that opportunity over
41:19
in Metalwood, over in Coonskin, over in Pounder Park in eastern Kenhall County,
41:22
and seeing what we can do to put in some playgrounds in there,
41:24
because you know, Dave, I go there with my two and a half
41:27
year old. I take them to those playgrounds and I look at them and
41:30
I see that they're in bad shape. But I see kids there. I
41:34
see families there, handfuls, I mean plethora of kids still playing, and
41:38
I think they deserve to have something nice. I think they deserve to have
41:40
something that those parents can be proud of as taxpayers. So we're going to
41:45
be putting a plan together. I'm calling it the Infrastructure Package for Playgrounds right
41:50
here in Kennall County. I think it's an important doing and I think that
41:53
a lot of people are going to be very supportive of it. And how
41:55
can you say no to playgrounds? Especially when again, this isn't a playground,
42:01
you know, a bridge to nowhere, right, a playground of nowhere
42:04
where nobody's going to it. These playgrounds are being used. They're in bad
42:07
shape. I've seen it firsthand as a parent, and I think that these
42:12
playgrounds have been in this shape for all nearly thirty years. Now it's time
42:15
for change. It's time to do something, and it's time to take responsibility.
42:20
And I think this is what this County Commission's going to do. And
42:22
so Thursday, not only are we going to be discussing the appointment of a
42:25
new County Commissioner, but we're going to be discussing this package plan and seeing
42:29
what we can do to make these playgrounds nice again. Goodall, County Commission
42:32

Tell Lance Wheeler, I understand the city of Charleston is in Kanawa County.

However, quit writing the city checks. Spend some money in other parts of

45:36
yes to parks and pools, says Texter Texas says. Some of the problems
45:40
with parks and playgrounds now as they've become campgrounds for the homeless. They've spread
45:45
beyond Charleston, so those areas are not going to be safe for kids to
45:47

45:52
Dave. Everyone needs reminded that Tenant was one of the Secretary of s TEA

candidates back to the two thousand and eight elections by the Secretary of State Project,
46:00

46:04
dollars that cycle to elect progressive candidates that included George Soros among its donors.

46:28
at various things, media moguls, head of HD, media candidate for Secretary
46:31
of State. Now he is West Virginia's best known snake bite victim Doug scaff
46:37
Doug, you're a freeman. You've been sprung from the hospital. Welcome to
46:39
the show, Dave. Thanks for having me. Man, yeah, snake,
46:44
charmer, whatever you want to call me. Man, I don't wish
46:45
it on anybody. It's and I kid you because I can. It's been
46:51
quite a journey though, Man. I'll tell you what, Man, I've
46:54
been in I was in the hospital for seven days, seven days, and
46:58
this is one of the pain. The pain is just excruciating. I can't
47:01
describe it. I mean, I can't describe it. I'll tell you what.
47:04
When it happened last week. You know, once people we get bet
47:08
once, twice, whatever, three times in the same spot in your ankle,
47:13
and I just didn't know how severe it was. And then I started
47:15
watching this venom move up my leg from my ankle in the in the ambulance
47:20
ride down in Boom County. I was in Danville. I just watched it,
47:22
like almost like an oil spill move up my ankle started moving. It
47:28
was real hot, and it looked like an oil spill taken over your leg
47:30
inside all way up to my knee. And that's what I really started to
47:34
get scared. I was like worried that this thing was going to keep going.
47:37
And then they luckily they got me there in time. They put some
47:40
medicine in me, but then they didn't put enough at first, and then
47:44
we had to give me some more because they kept spreading all the way up
47:46
to my all the way up to my hip. Well, obviously they released
47:50
you from the hospital, but you're still not out of the woods yet.
47:52
What's the treatment like now? Yeah? Literally, not out of the woods
47:54
or out of the weeds. That's a good one date. It didn't meant
48:00
I love you, buddy, No, it's a I tell you what.
48:02
Here's the thing, here's the durnedess thing, the pain. I keep it
48:07
propped up, and then when I put my foot down, and about eight
48:10
seconds, it just rushes. Everything rushes to the infected area on my ankle
48:15
and it just starts robbing. It feels like you got stung again by like
48:19
a jellyfish or something. It starts stinging, start throbbing. My ankle swells
48:22
up, my foot swells up, and it's just like your footfalls asleep for
48:27
about two minutes and then it finally loosens up and then I can start moving
48:30
it again. But every time I get up, that's what it does.
48:34
And I've researched it in people all across the country and the state, and
48:37
all of it been Facebook to me and whatever it's saying, and they were
48:39
describing the same thing. They said, Yeah, I could go on for
48:43
thirty forty five days. It's damned this thing. So what is the treatment
48:46
now? I mean, what are they doing? I mean, I know
48:49
you were home, but what I meant medication or what? Yeah, yeah,
48:52
I'm on medication. It got infected. The bite area got infected,
48:57
you know. So I'm on antibiotics, two different antibiotics that knocks you out
49:00
every time I take them. I'm on a bunch of pain medicine, therapy,
49:04
doing a little therapy, A want of therapy that taught me what to
49:06
do on my own. Get up, move around as much as you can
49:08
tolerate, move it when it gets stiff. Just power through it. They
49:12
said, you just got to suck it up for an end and a half
49:14
two minutes to get through the pain. And then it loosens up. It
49:16
really does. It loosens up and then I can move it around. So
49:20
it's just going to deal with the annoying part of being in inconvenience for you
49:24
know, however long it takes well. Doug Man. You and I have
49:28
been friends for a number of years, long before I started doing this radio
49:30
show. I thought, some prayers are with you. We wish you the
49:32
best, man. Thanks a lot. So I just I learned it.
49:36
I think it was either you know those copper heads down in Boom County,
49:37
Man, they're tough. They must have been either angry Democrats or angry Republicans
49:43
that didn't like But my sign was playing, don't mess with don't mess with
49:45
Southern West Virginian pal. All right, Doug, we'll talk to you soon.
49:49
Man. Thanks a lot, Thanks Dave. Before we close out this
49:52
morning, I do want to mention this this Sunday is May twenty sixth.
49:55
Date may not mean so much to you, but it does for me.
50:00
It was on May twenty sixth. It was a Tuesday in twenty twenty,
50:04
the day after Memorial Day. That's the way it fell. That year.
50:06
We were in the midst of COVID. We were trying to decide which of
50:09
two horrible candidates we wanted to choose for President Biden or Trump. On that
50:13
part's sound familiar. It was on that date, but I started doing this
50:16
show. Danny Jones had done the show. Then he stopped, and I'll
50:22
be honest with you, the show was kind of in limbo, and Joe
50:25
Parsons and Dale Cooper gave me the keys and said the car is yours from
50:31
From a political standpoint, I hear it all the time. The liberals say
50:35
I'm too conservative and the conservatives sam too liberal, So I guess, Jeff
50:38
I must be doing something right. I enjoy talking to the governors and senators
50:44
and congressmen and women legislators from all over the state, all sorts of elected
50:47
officials, mayors to councils, to judicial folks and county commissioners of like,
50:52
and just normal folks with projects and people trying to do good things in their
50:58
community. It's all part of the show, and I rarely, if ever
51:02
turn anyone away because I think everyone has a voice and everyone should be heard.
51:10
The show has been a success beyond my wildest dreams that ratings are great.
51:19
The revenue is great, which makes the accounting department of the bosses upstairs
51:22
happy. But I'm just generally having fun doing this show, and it's been
51:28
four years. Effective Tuesday again, I'm sorry, Effective Sunday, It'll be
51:31
four years since I started doing the show, and I hope to continue to
51:35
do it for many years to come. So I just wanted to say thank
51:37
you to all the producers and the news team, the sponsors, the guests,
51:43
those who help book the guests, the sales team, engineering office staff,
51:46
all great people that make it a pleasure to report to eleven eleven each
51:52
day. But most of all, I want to say thank you to you,
51:55
the listeners, because none of this matters without you. So I sincerely
52:04
thank you. Thirty six years in the radio business. I'm doing my dream
52:07
job right now and I hope to continue to do it for a long long
52:10
time to come. So thank you. Thank you so much to all the
52:15
folks that make it all possible. We're gonna take Memorial Day off. I
52:19
will be back on Tuesday do the show. John Lovejoy from Fresh Air,
52:23
one of our sponsor will be stopping Bifos. Douck Irwin from a program called
