- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let's head out to the Ramos Law Hotline.
- 0:01Speaker 1: Car accident, you need Ramos Law. Medical doctor and attorney, RamosLaw.com.
- 0:05Speaker 1: JeffLegwald at ESPN.com. Joins us every single Thursday at 9 o'clock. Hello, Leggy.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Morning, fellas.
- 0:12Speaker 1: So, Leggy, last night, it's something that in the fourth quarter,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Drake May throwing three picks, including that one to close
- 0:18Speaker 1: out the game. Pretty crazy. Is that something you could
- 0:21Speaker 1: ever see Bo Nix doing?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Not three like that. That last one... is unbelievable decision.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I mean, you're, you're in the red zone. You're going to,
- 0:33Speaker 2: you're going to tie the game at minimum. So I
- 0:35Speaker 2: don't know. That's just a total vapor lock and have
- 0:40Speaker 2: a hard time believing he would have thrown, you know,
- 0:45Speaker 2: if he had thrown, if Nick's had thrown two, I
- 0:47Speaker 2: think there would be a very heated view on the
- 0:50Speaker 2: sideline after the second one.
- 0:54Speaker 3: On the other side of the ball, Drew Locke, you know,
- 0:56Speaker 3: he didn't tear it up, but he won the game.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I was impressed.
- 0:59Speaker 4: What are your thoughts on Drew? Did you think that
- 1:01Speaker 4: this is what he would become? He's pretty comfortable playing
- 1:04Speaker 4: that backup role in Seattle.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's probably not what any quarterback wants
- 1:11Speaker 2: in his career, but it's a good living if you
- 1:15Speaker 2: become that reliable guy who, you know, shows up every
- 1:21Speaker 2: day and helps the starter and knows the offense without
- 1:24Speaker 2: a lot of practice reps. You know, it's funny because,
- 1:28Speaker 2: you know, having seen him here and having reviewed him
- 1:32Speaker 2: before his draft pretty heavily, you saw a lot more
- 1:36Speaker 2: mature player, as you would expect this many years into
- 1:39Speaker 2: his career now. But he had a lot of completions
- 1:43Speaker 2: he wouldn't have taken in his time as a starter here.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And I think that's the difference. You know, quarterbacks don't
- 1:50Speaker 2: always want to hear it, especially young ones. But it
- 1:54Speaker 2: always resonates in my head when I've had guys like
- 1:58Speaker 2: Elway and Manning just say over and over, you got
- 2:02Speaker 2: to learn when to just take the completion. And that's
- 2:06Speaker 2: what he did last night. He came in and he
- 2:09Speaker 2: just took the completions that were available and they were
- 2:14Speaker 2: able to put together enough offense to win the game.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Hey, Jeff, we talked the other day about Baker Mayfield's
- 2:20Speaker 5: new deal at $ 165 total and $ 55 per. Is it
- 2:24Speaker 5: a foregone conclusion today that Bo Nix will get paid
- 2:28Speaker 5: that big-time contract, or is there any doubt whatsoever?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well, I don't think you can always, you can never
- 2:35Speaker 2: say anything's a given, 100% given. I mean, if he
- 2:41Speaker 2: suffered some kind of, you know, injury of some sort
- 2:46Speaker 2: that would impact this throwing or whatever. That's always going
- 2:50Speaker 2: to be a consideration, but, and performance, you know, always matters.
- 2:55Speaker 2: But that, what that tells you is where the, where
- 2:58Speaker 2: the price tag is right now for, for quarterbacks. You know,
- 3:02Speaker 2: I don't, you know, where, where do you put Mayfield
- 3:06Speaker 2: in your quarterback tier in the league right now? And,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and look what he's getting paid. I mean, that's, going
- 3:12Speaker 2: to be the cost of doing business and if people
- 3:15Speaker 2: don't think that contract's going to influence what this roster
- 3:19Speaker 2: looks like i think you're sadly mistaken and that's why
- 3:23Speaker 2: this year is very important to get done whatever they
- 3:28Speaker 2: want to get done because uh they're running out of
- 3:31Speaker 2: time on rooks on nicks's rookie contract to to build
- 3:36Speaker 2: the roster the way they.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Have Jeff Legwood with us all conversations with leg. You're
- 3:40Speaker 1: brought to you by the international brotherhood of electrical workers.
- 3:43Speaker 1: IBEW local 68 start with a job and with a career, um, leggy,
- 3:49Speaker 1: this is going to be the last time we talked
- 3:50Speaker 1: to you before the game is played. So it's nice
- 3:52Speaker 1: that we have a game coming up, but what info
- 3:55Speaker 1: can you give us on the undrafted rookie left tackle
- 3:58Speaker 1: Khalil Benson that might be starting for the chiefs?
- 4:03Speaker 2: That's a, that's a tough, that's a tough opener. If
- 4:06Speaker 2: you're him, uh, I would expect he doesn't spend much
- 4:11Speaker 2: time alone over there on that side. I think he's
- 4:15Speaker 2: going to be in a crowd. And, you know, I
- 4:20Speaker 2: guess I'm always in the believe it when I see it.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You've got to think Reed would want to run the
- 4:27Speaker 2: ball more, but that's not been his M.O. over the years. But,
- 4:33Speaker 2: you know, he's a good player. I think I knew
- 4:36Speaker 2: a lot of teams that had a sixth or seventh
- 4:39Speaker 2: round grade on them or a premium undrafted, which is
- 4:44Speaker 2: kind of a seventh round grade now. But, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 2: a good player, but that's pretty deep water to get
- 4:51Speaker 2: chucked into right away.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Interesting road in college for Khalil Benson, if it's a
- 4:57Speaker 4: familiar name to those of you in.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Colorado, it's because he played for the Buffs.
- 5:00Speaker 4: He started his career in Indiana, transferred to Colorado, then
- 5:04Speaker 4: transferred back to Indiana to win a national title. That
- 5:07Speaker 4: is the state of college football, apparently. You can play
- 5:09Speaker 4: for two teams in the same career. But he's had
- 5:12Speaker 4: plenty of experience. Maybe some of these dudes coming out
- 5:16Speaker 4: of college now, they've played so long, so many games,
- 5:18Speaker 4: they're just a different breed.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, and the athleticism in the power conferences,
- 5:26Speaker 2: that's why you see the clusters of draft picks. You know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: the SEC, Big Ten, you know, that's why you see
- 5:34Speaker 2: so much of the draft as players snagged out of
- 5:38Speaker 2: those conferences, because athletically, those guys are more ready to
- 5:43Speaker 2: play right away physically. And, and especially sec players are ready,
- 5:49Speaker 2: you know, mentally competing in practice and all of those things.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But no, he, he's a good player and they, you know.
- 5:57Speaker 4: He was drafted then he didn't make your list. How
- 6:00Speaker 4: does nobody draft this guy? If he's a good player
- 6:02Speaker 4: and starting.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Week one, Well, I mean, you know, Chris Harris Jr.
- 6:06Speaker 2: was undrafted, but he was a good player. So you're
- 6:11Speaker 2: only talking 300, you know, 250 draft spots. If you're
- 6:17Speaker 2: the 270th best player in America, you're still a really
- 6:21Speaker 2: good football player. And they just don't have a draft
- 6:27Speaker 2: round built for you. But, and, you know, some of
- 6:30Speaker 2: it is just timing of when teams picks come around,
- 6:33Speaker 2: you know, he probably was up on the board as
- 6:38Speaker 2: we're going to take that guy next. And then something
- 6:41Speaker 2: happens and, and they need another position or they decide
- 6:45Speaker 2: they're just going to take another guy with the same grade.
- 6:48Speaker 2: So I don't, I never take it as a, you know,
- 6:52Speaker 2: it's kind of a quality assessment of a guy. I
- 6:56Speaker 2: think there's tons of good players in day three of
- 6:58Speaker 2: a draft. And tons of good players that don't get
- 7:01Speaker 2: picked if you're going to run a developmental thing. But
- 7:06Speaker 2: I think athletically, just some teams didn't have him with
- 7:10Speaker 2: elite athleticism. And at that position, that's a pretty big benchmark.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Because we will not talk to you before the game
- 7:18Speaker 5: on Monday night again. Have you talked to your counterparts
- 7:21Speaker 5: in Kansas City? I know you've got your own job
- 7:23Speaker 5: to do, but is there a latest on Patrick Mahomes?
- 7:25Speaker 5: Is it all clearly systems go? What's the feeling over
- 7:29Speaker 5: there in KC?
- 7:31Speaker 2: Well, I think most that's been the message they've been giving,
- 7:34Speaker 2: you know, again, you're not going to know. I mean, those,
- 7:37Speaker 2: nobody has seen full practice there. You know, I've talked
- 7:42Speaker 2: to people I know in and around the team and,
- 7:45Speaker 2: and the message is, Oh yeah, he's ready to go.
- 7:48Speaker 2: But I think deep down, they know nine months is
- 7:51Speaker 2: a very fast clock on, on that recovery. And the
- 7:55Speaker 2: game is nine months to the day that he was injured. So, uh,
- 8:02Speaker 2: Is he going to move exactly like he did before
- 8:05Speaker 2: the injury? I would guess not, but he's going to
- 8:09Speaker 2: be ready to chuck it around. Nothing happened to his brain.
- 8:14Speaker 2: He's still going to be able to assess what the
- 8:17Speaker 2: Broncos are doing on defense and all those things. I
- 8:21Speaker 2: think we will see some concession to the movement, whether
- 8:25Speaker 2: that's getting the ball out of his hands quicker, more screens,
- 8:28Speaker 2: more you know, wheel routes, more things to just get
- 8:32Speaker 2: the ball moving. Cause he is known for a very
- 8:36Speaker 2: deep pass drop. He drops a little deeper than, than
- 8:39Speaker 2: a lot of the marquee quarterbacks do. And, you know,
- 8:42Speaker 2: will we see all of that? You know, I'm, I'm
- 8:45Speaker 2: not sure, but I think there has to be at
- 8:48Speaker 2: least a small concession to that. He's coming back in,
- 8:52Speaker 2: in just nine months.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Jeff Legwell, the ESPN.com with us. How many catches does
- 8:56Speaker 1: Waddle have on Monday?
- 8:59Speaker 2: I think you'll have about 400 targets if they get the,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you know, I, he's going to see the ball plenty.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I don't, you know, I don't have a number for you,
- 9:08Speaker 2: but cause I, I do think there, there is a,
- 9:11Speaker 2: a real Davis web mindset that they're going to be
- 9:16Speaker 2: physical at some point, run the ball and, and play
- 9:19Speaker 2: that kind of game at certain points in the evening.
- 9:24Speaker 2: But yeah, Waddle's getting plenty of targets. They didn't, They
- 9:27Speaker 2: didn't bring him in, and they haven't practiced the way
- 9:31Speaker 2: they've practiced that he doesn't see the ball plenty unless
- 9:36Speaker 2: the Chiefs just decide they're going to put three guys
- 9:40Speaker 2: on him and overlap everything.
- 9:42Speaker 3: How do you see this running back rotation working for
- 9:45Speaker 3: the Broncos? If J.K.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Dobbins is the starter, does he get multiple series? Do
- 9:49Speaker 4: they switch off series, switch off plays? I've always wondered
- 9:53Speaker 4: how they operate that.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Vic, usually it's, you know, often it's the running back
- 9:59Speaker 2: coach that's you know, it's all been covered in meetings,
- 10:03Speaker 2: you know, like Thursday, Friday. They cover, you know, okay,
- 10:08Speaker 2: what back is with what personnel groupings, how many snaps
- 10:13Speaker 2: do we project that grouping to be on the field?
- 10:15Speaker 2: All that stuff's done before the game. So, yeah, it's
- 10:18Speaker 2: Dobbin's when they're in the, you know, sort of base offense,
- 10:24Speaker 2: early downs. And when they think, you know, they're always
- 10:30Speaker 2: going to manage Dobbins's workload. So when, when they think
- 10:33Speaker 2: it's one of those times in the game, it'll be
- 10:36Speaker 2: Coleman in that row and that role. And then Harvey
- 10:39Speaker 2: will be more of the, the hybrid, you know, and
- 10:42Speaker 2: they've got some, you know, some past protection things and, and, and,
- 10:50Speaker 2: When the back is more of a receiver in those situations,
- 10:55Speaker 2: it'll be Harvey in there. But those three guys, they're
- 10:58Speaker 2: all going to play. It's just a matter of where
- 11:01Speaker 2: they make the cutoff on Dobbins to how the rest
- 11:05Speaker 2: of it looks.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Hey, Jeff, in your opinion, the running back rotation in
- 11:08Speaker 5: the formations and maybe tight ends as well, how much
- 11:12Speaker 5: of that is a tell for the Denver Broncos of
- 11:14Speaker 5: what they would like to do on this particular play?
- 11:18Speaker 5: And how does that compare with other teams that you
- 11:20Speaker 5: see around the league?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Most last year, it was a big time. They were
- 11:27Speaker 2: tipping their hand a lot. At least defensive coaches I
- 11:29Speaker 2: talked to said they were tipping their hand by personnel groupings.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And you can see that on the when I chart
- 11:36Speaker 2: the game film after, you can see that. I think
- 11:41Speaker 2: they have a little more versatility with this group. You know,
- 11:45Speaker 2: Dobbins can have some of the receiving plays. They run
- 11:50Speaker 2: for Harvey, and so can Coleman. So they're a lot
- 11:53Speaker 2: more universal this year with who they're putting in the game.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Last year, especially after Dobbins got hurt, they were really
- 12:01Speaker 2: stuck in– folks kind of knew what part of the
- 12:06Speaker 2: play sheet they were on by who was in the game.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald, ESPN.com. Two quick ones here. Number one, I
- 12:13Speaker 1: know we don't know the extent of the injury, but
- 12:15Speaker 1: with a hip being a problem for Sam Darnold, is
- 12:18Speaker 1: there a chance you think that he would miss all
- 12:20Speaker 1: the way up to the Broncos game in week six?
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I've asked around this morning a
- 12:25Speaker 2: little bit to see what's up there, but I don't
- 12:28Speaker 2: have a good report on that. That's a tough injury
- 12:32Speaker 2: for certainly for a quarter or anybody that has to move,
- 12:36Speaker 2: but especially a quarterback who, you know, they, they run
- 12:42Speaker 2: a lot of the Shanahan ask things on offense. That
- 12:47Speaker 2: requires a lot of quarterback movement, even in the run game, you're,
- 12:51Speaker 2: you're moving and rolling. There's different depths. You got to
- 12:54Speaker 2: get for the handoffs, depending on what play you're doing.
- 12:57Speaker 2: So it's movement is paramount. That's, that's not a, an
- 13:02Speaker 2: offense or a guy where they could just say, okay,
- 13:04Speaker 2: we'll just put him in the shotgun and try and
- 13:07Speaker 2: nurse it through. He's going to need mobility. So I
- 13:10Speaker 2: think that does impact how quick he does come back.
- 13:14Speaker 2: But they're sort of hinting they think it's good news,
- 13:17Speaker 2: but he was supposed to go for an MRI this morning.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And then finally, I consider you a certified ball knower,
- 13:23Speaker 1: but you are also a knower of sports. Do you
- 13:26Speaker 1: think this random guy in his car sounds like every
- 13:29Speaker 1: baseball announcer you've ever heard?
- 13:30Speaker 3: What do you.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Think, Leggy?
- 13:32Speaker 5: Does that sound like every broadcast you've ever heard?
- 13:38Speaker 1: And we lost him.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Oh, is he gone?
- 13:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I got no audio, so I'm just going to say yes.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 13:54Speaker 1: All right. JeffLegwald, ESPN.com. Always appreciate the time, Leggy. We'll
- 13:57Speaker 1: talk next week.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Thanks, fellas.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Take care.
- 14:00Speaker 3: All right. Did he hit a dead zone.
- 14:02Speaker 1: At that exact time, or is he not playing my games?
- 14:04Speaker 3: Hey, don't play radio games.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Why can't he.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Play my games? Oh, you're doing the radio thing again.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Leggy doesn't tolerate radio games.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Okay.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I think he does like the radio games. Know your audience.
- 14:15Speaker 3: It's like a point guard. Know what you're doing.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Know it.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Know the offense. Understand who you're giving the ball to.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I think that Legge plays a character of somebody who
- 14:24Speaker 1: doesn't have time for stupidity, but he loves the time
- 14:27Speaker 1: for stupidity. I'm convinced of this. I don't know about that.
