- 0:00Speaker 1: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art
- 0:04Speaker 1: my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mark
- 0:08Speaker 1: 1.11 As I step into my purpose, I thank you that,
- 0:15Speaker 1: like Jesus, I am being baptized into my new life
- 0:20Speaker 1: and mission here on earth. Before I even begin, I
- 0:26Speaker 1: thank you that also, like Jesus, You have affirmed and
- 0:31Speaker 1: validated me as your child. With my identity secured, I
- 0:37Speaker 1: know that even as I walk through the deserts of temptation,
- 0:41Speaker 1: you are with me and have equipped me to overcome
- 0:45Speaker 1: the lies of Satan. When I am tempted with comfort
- 0:50Speaker 1: instead of commitment, I will remind Satan of your word
- 0:55Speaker 1: and command him to flee. When Satan tries to get
- 1:00Speaker 1: me to doubt my identity, I will remind him that
- 1:04Speaker 1: I am fearfully and wonderfully made. When Satan tempts me
- 1:09Speaker 1: with the luxury and fame of this world, I will
- 1:13Speaker 1: remind him that the source of my fulfillment comes from you, Lord,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and that it is you who elevates me, and I
- 1:22Speaker 1: will command him to flee. I thank you, Lord, that
- 1:28Speaker 1: through your word, I have supernatural steadfastness and resolve. Satan
- 1:35Speaker 1: has no authority over my life. And through the life, death,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and resurrection of Jesus, I have complete victory. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Listening to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God.

- 2:13Speaker 2: Baptism and Temptation In our last story, we peered into
- 2:18Speaker 2: the childhood of Jesus. Even as a young boy, his
- 2:21Speaker 2: purpose was clear. He was to teach the Word of
- 2:24Speaker 2: God and turn people's hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Although his family did not entirely understand, Jesus grew up
- 2:32Speaker 2: with purpose and a mission. He grew in strength and wisdom,
- 2:36Speaker 2: worked as a carpenter, and waited to begin his ministry.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Now we see John preparing the way of Christ through baptism.
- 2:44Speaker 2: He preached repentance until the day of the Lord finally arrived. Then,
- 2:49Speaker 2: before his very eyes, God enters in, inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I'm so glad you've joined us on the Bible in
- 2:59Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,
- 3:03Speaker 3: I want you to know that I would absolutely love
- 3:06Speaker 3: to send you my daily devotional that will give you

- 3:14Speaker 3: we wake up to the moment our head finally hits
- 3:17Speaker 3: the pillow, there are thousands of things demanding our attention.
- 3:21Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 3:24Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 3:27Speaker 3: truth in God's Word. That's why I want to help
- 3:30Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing

- 3:46Speaker 3: That's JackGraham.org. JackGraham.org. In our last episode, we heard how Jesus,
- 3:54Speaker 3: at just 12 years of age, was full of wisdom
- 3:58Speaker 3: and insight and in perfect fellowship with God. His desire
- 4:03Speaker 3: was to be near to the Father, and when his
- 4:05Speaker 3: parents went to Jerusalem for Passover, Jesus spent his days
- 4:09Speaker 3: in the temple, sitting with teachers and rabbis, answering questions
- 4:13Speaker 3: but also sharing the depth of his understanding so that
- 4:16Speaker 3: all around him were amazed. From an early age, just 12,
- 4:21Speaker 3: it was clear that he knew his purpose, even when
- 4:24Speaker 3: others didn't understand it. Today, We'll see John the Baptist
- 4:28Speaker 3: preaching repentance and baptizing people, preparing the way for Jesus'
- 4:32Speaker 3: ministry to begin. God was using him to soften the
- 4:36Speaker 3: hearts of his people, turning them back to him and
- 4:39Speaker 3: getting them ready to meet the Messiah. Then we'll hear
- 4:43Speaker 3: how Jesus came onto the scene, God's very presence, Emmanuel
- 4:47Speaker 3: among his people, the lamb that would take away the
- 4:50Speaker 3: sin of the world. Let's listen now to the reading
- 4:53Speaker 3: of God's word.
- 4:55Speaker 2: John rose to the sounds of birds chirping in the trees.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Crawling out of his makeshift hut, he could see the
- 5:02Speaker 2: morning light peeking through the edge of the forest. He
- 5:05Speaker 2: stretched his lean and muscular arms to the sky, breathing
- 5:08Speaker 2: in the cool morning air. He walked down to the
- 5:11Speaker 2: brook nearby and washed his shaggy hair. Then he ate
- 5:14Speaker 2: his breakfast, cooked locusts from the desert with honey he
- 5:18Speaker 2: foraged from the trees. John prayed to the Lord after
- 5:22Speaker 2: his meal, calling upon him for favor and anointing. He
- 5:26Speaker 2: strapped his cloak of camel fur securely around his waist
- 5:30Speaker 2: and ventured off to the Jordan River. A multitude of
- 5:33Speaker 2: people gathered by the Jordan waiting for John. They had
- 5:36Speaker 2: been meeting him for weeks now, listening to him proclaiming
- 5:39Speaker 2: the way of the Lord. John scanned the sea of
- 5:42Speaker 2: faces and stepped into the river. The water was cool
- 5:46Speaker 2: and refreshing. He turned around to the people and raised
- 5:49Speaker 2: his voice. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near,
- 5:53Speaker 2: he yelled. One by one, the people walked into the
- 5:56Speaker 2: water with John and were baptized. Their submersion in the
- 6:00Speaker 2: water represented a turning away from sin and idolatry. It
- 6:04Speaker 2: was often a custom Gentiles would undergo to come into
- 6:06Speaker 2: the family of God. Yet Jews flocked to John to
- 6:10Speaker 2: be baptized. Their hearts were softening towards the Lord, and
- 6:14Speaker 2: they knew they needed to turn from their selfish ways
- 6:16Speaker 2: and be restored. John would preach the truth of God
- 6:20Speaker 2: to thousands of people daily. Then he would baptize those
- 6:24Speaker 2: whose hearts were ready to receive the restoration. John would
- 6:28Speaker 2: baptize each person, and the crowd would erupt in cheers.
- 6:32Speaker 2: A revival was beginning in the heart of Israel. John
- 6:35Speaker 2: knew that the day of the Lord was coming very soon.
- 6:40Speaker 2: As John was baptizing, he saw a group of hooded
- 6:43Speaker 2: figures coming towards the water. It was the Pharisees and Sadducees,
- 6:48Speaker 2: the religious elite responsible for upholding the law. They stared
- 6:52Speaker 2: at John with scornful eyes. They had spent their entire
- 6:55Speaker 2: lives sowing seeds of shame into the people of God,
- 6:59Speaker 2: yet John would not allow them to poison his followers.
- 7:03Speaker 2: JOHN MARCHED OUT OF THE WATER AND POINTED TOWARDS THEM.'
- 7:05Speaker 2: BROOD OF VIPERS!' HE SHOUTED.' DO NOT PRESUME YOU ARE
- 7:09Speaker 2: SECURE WITH THE LORD BECAUSE YOU ARE CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM.
- 7:12Speaker 2: GOD COULD MAKE THESE ROCKS CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM IF HE PLEASED.'
- 7:16Speaker 2: THE MEN SAID NOTHING. THEY ONLY GLARED AT JOHN WITH LOATHING.
- 7:20Speaker 2: JOHN CONTINUED, SAYING,' COME AND BEAR FRUIT WORTHY OF REPENTANCE,
- 7:25Speaker 2: FOR A DAY WILL COME WHEN ALL THAT DOES NOT
- 7:27Speaker 2: BEAR GOOD FRUIT WILL BE CUT OFF.' The people marveled
- 7:32Speaker 2: at John's words. John's eloquence and bravery stirred the children
- 7:36Speaker 2: of God. They began to mumble rumors of him being
- 7:39Speaker 2: the promised Messiah. John paused for a long moment, and
- 7:43Speaker 2: the people were silent as they waited for him to speak.
- 7:47Speaker 2: John touched the water and let it fall out of
- 7:49Speaker 2: his hands.' I baptize you with water,' John said calmly.'
- 7:53Speaker 2: But the one who comes after me will baptize you
- 7:56Speaker 2: with the fire of the Holy Spirit.' John's words were
- 8:00Speaker 2: interrupted as he saw a man standing in the crowd.
- 8:04Speaker 2: John's eyes widened and his lower lip began to quiver.
- 8:08Speaker 2: The man stepped forward from the group of people standing
- 8:11Speaker 2: on the shore. A few tears streamed down John's hairy
- 8:14Speaker 2: face as he watched Jesus walk into the water. John
- 8:18Speaker 2: could barely speak. His entire purpose in life was to
- 8:21Speaker 2: prepare the way of God's chosen, and here he was
- 8:25Speaker 2: standing before him. Behold the Lamb of God who takes
- 8:29Speaker 2: away the sins of the world, he whispered to himself.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Jesus smiled and held his cousin's shoulder. Would you baptize me, John?
- 8:39Speaker 2: he asked. John shook his head. Let it not be so,
- 8:42Speaker 2: my Lord. It is you who should be baptizing me.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Jesus held up his hand and grinned. Let it be so.
- 8:50Speaker 2: It is fitting to fulfill what is about to take place.
- 8:53Speaker 2: So John agreed and led Jesus deeper into the water.
- 8:57Speaker 2: John held the middle of Jesus' back with one hand
- 9:00Speaker 2: and his arm in another. Then John slowly dipped Jesus
- 9:03Speaker 2: back into the water. The crowd watched silently as Jesus
- 9:07Speaker 2: went under the river. As John brought Jesus back up,
- 9:11Speaker 2: the skies opened up. A bright light shone like a
- 9:14Speaker 2: second sun, and the Holy Spirit descended down in the
- 9:17Speaker 2: form of a dove. All in attendance awed as they
- 9:21Speaker 2: heard the voice of God speak for the first time
- 9:24Speaker 2: in over 400 years. This is my beloved Son. It
- 9:30Speaker 2: is with him I am pleased. This event marked the
- 9:34Speaker 2: beginning of Jesus' ministry. The favor of the Father and
- 9:38Speaker 2: the presence of the Spirit dwelled richly with the promised Son.
- 9:42Speaker 2: In his baptism, Jesus modeled repentance for the rest of humanity.
- 9:46Speaker 2: He identified with sinful and broken man. Yet he was
- 9:50Speaker 2: not sinful nor broken. Already Jesus was beginning to take
- 9:54Speaker 2: on the dirtiness of mankind. The Holy Spirit dwelled with
- 9:58Speaker 2: Jesus richly. and it was by his guiding presence that
- 10:01Speaker 2: Jesus departed the Jordan into the wilderness. Jesus hiked the
- 10:06Speaker 2: hills outside Judea. There he fasted for forty days, seeking
- 10:10Speaker 2: the presence and wisdom of God. Jesus fixed his gaze
- 10:14Speaker 2: on the nation of Israel and A gentle wind blew,
- 10:17Speaker 2: rustling the tall grass beside him. He was hungry for food, yes. However,
- 10:22Speaker 2: Jesus was more hungry for the restoration of his people.
- 10:26Speaker 2: As he was praying to the Lord, a slithering presence
- 10:29Speaker 2: entered his midst. Jesus looked over his shoulder to find
- 10:32Speaker 2: the accuser behind him. The author of deception, disguised as
- 10:36Speaker 2: an angel of light, loomed over Jesus as he sat.
- 10:40Speaker 2: This was the same enemy that spoke to Eve in
- 10:43Speaker 2: the garden. Satan. The two did not stand as equals. However,
- 10:48Speaker 2: Satan in his pride believed he could trick Jesus into
- 10:51Speaker 2: compromising his heart. He knew Jesus was hungry from fasting,
- 10:55Speaker 2: so he drew in close to Jesus and whispered, What
- 10:58Speaker 2: good is the Son of God if he cannot feed himself?
- 11:02Speaker 2: Why not just make these stones into bread? Surely you
- 11:05Speaker 2: are able. Jesus was fully God and fully man, so
- 11:09Speaker 2: the human side of him hurt from hunger. However, he
- 11:12Speaker 2: would not be swayed. Man does not live by bread alone,
- 11:16Speaker 2: he said, but every word that pours forth from the
- 11:19Speaker 2: voice of God. Satan spat and took Jesus up into
- 11:23Speaker 2: a high place to gaze at the kingdom of the earth.
- 11:26Speaker 2: You see those kingdoms, Jesus? Look at those people. They
- 11:30Speaker 2: are ready to be ruled, to be conquered. I am
- 11:33Speaker 2: in the ears of every king in the world. If
- 11:36Speaker 2: you bow to me, all of it shall be yours.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Satan's words were soft and cunning.
- 11:42Speaker 3: However, they dripped with poison.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Jesus turned away and looked deeply into the angel's eyes.
- 11:49Speaker 2: It is written, You shall worship God and God alone.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Only he is worthy to serve, he said. Jesus' voice
- 11:59Speaker 2: was strong and resolute. Growing angry, Satan took Jesus to
- 12:04Speaker 2: the edge of the mighty temple. Below, there were thousands
- 12:07Speaker 2: of people. He had Jesus gaze upon the multitudes. He
- 12:11Speaker 2: whispered softly in Jesus' ear, saying, If you truly are
- 12:15Speaker 2: the Son of God, why not throw yourself over? Surely
- 12:19Speaker 2: the angels will come to your rescue.
- 12:22Speaker 1: They will see it too, the people.
- 12:24Speaker 2: They will see your glory. Jesus looked down at the
- 12:28Speaker 2: people below. He did not need them to watch a spectacle.
- 12:32Speaker 2: He wanted their hearts to turn towards him and be
- 12:35Speaker 2: saved from their own sin. You shall not test the
- 12:38Speaker 2: Lord your God, Jesus said. His last answer was a
- 12:42Speaker 2: rebuke as well. So Satan crawled back into the shadows.
- 12:47Speaker 2: So Jesus returned to the people after 40 long days.
- 12:51Speaker 2: He ate, he gathered his strength, and marched towards Galilee.
- 12:58Speaker 3: As we begin today's reading, we meet a very unusual man.
- 13:03Speaker 3: John the Baptizer didn't fit the mold of society. He
- 13:07Speaker 3: lived in the desert. eating insects and honey and wearing
- 13:11Speaker 3: camel's hair. But this was no madman. His voice was
- 13:16Speaker 3: strong and sure. He spoke boldly, proclaiming that the kingdom
- 13:21Speaker 3: of God was on the way. And each day he
- 13:24Speaker 3: grew larger and larger crowds, Jews and others whose hearts
- 13:28Speaker 3: were being warmed toward God. And as they heard John's
- 13:32Speaker 3: call for repentance, they came to be baptized as a
- 13:35Speaker 3: sign of of their commitment to turn away from their
- 13:38Speaker 3: sin and begin a brand new commitment to God. God
- 13:42Speaker 3: worked powerfully through John the Baptist, just as he said
- 13:45Speaker 3: he would, to prepare the way of the Lord, the Messiah,
- 13:47Speaker 3: to begin his ministry. This was a threat to the
- 13:52Speaker 3: religious establishment, the powerful and oppressive Pharisees and Sadducees who
- 13:57Speaker 3: wielded power and control over the Jews with dogma and
- 14:00Speaker 3: burdensome rules. They watched from a distance, sneering, seething at
- 14:05Speaker 3: this man who preached repentance and forgiveness from sin, not religion.
- 14:10Speaker 3: But John did not cower before them. He was courageous.
- 14:13Speaker 3: He called them out. He called them actually a brood
- 14:16Speaker 3: of vipers, poisonous snakes, threats. John called them to repentance
- 14:21Speaker 3: as well, warning them that the day was coming when
- 14:23Speaker 3: they would be cut off from bearing any fruit. His
- 14:26Speaker 3: boldness impressed the crowds. They began to wonder if he
- 14:30Speaker 3: was the Messiah. The people were ready for a Savior,
- 14:33Speaker 3: and they wanted John to be their hero. But he
- 14:37Speaker 3: was quick to correct their misconception. His baptism was with water,
- 14:42Speaker 3: but the one who was to come would baptize them
- 14:45Speaker 3: with the fire of God's Spirit. It would signify a
- 14:48Speaker 3: deeper change of life. And then one day, suddenly Jesus
- 14:52Speaker 3: came through the crowd. John knew exactly who he was,
- 14:56Speaker 3: even if others didn't. This was the very moment for
- 14:59Speaker 3: which John had been born. And he didn't miss it.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Here was the Savior the world needed. And he announced loudly, boldly,
- 15:07Speaker 3: that Jesus was the Lamb that would take away the
- 15:10Speaker 3: sins of the world. Then what Jesus did shocked John.
- 15:15Speaker 3: He asked to be baptized, and John was incredulous. He,
- 15:20Speaker 3: in fact, protested. Shouldn't Jesus be the one baptizing him?
- 15:24Speaker 3: But Jesus assured him that this was what must take place.
- 15:28Speaker 3: And so Jesus submitted to the baptism of John. to
- 15:31Speaker 3: fulfill all righteousness. And then something supernatural happened. God spoke
- 15:37Speaker 3: from heaven. The voice from the heavens gave the people
- 15:40Speaker 3: a clear message that we find in Matthew 3, 17.
- 15:44Speaker 3: And behold, a voice from heaven said, This is my
- 15:46Speaker 3: beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. As God
- 15:51Speaker 3: the Father spoke, God's Spirit in the form of a
- 15:53Speaker 3: dove descended and rested on Jesus. So here we see
- 15:57Speaker 3: the Trinity, the triune God, all three persons, Father, Son,
- 16:02Speaker 3: and Holy Spirit. The meeting was abundantly clear to everyone present,
- 16:07Speaker 3: and it should be to us. This one, the Savior
- 16:10Speaker 3: of the world, Jesus, was more than a prophet or
- 16:13Speaker 3: a teacher. He was God's one and only Son, and
- 16:17Speaker 3: God's Spirit anointed him and appointed him to be the
- 16:20Speaker 3: Savior of the world. Immediately after this event, Jesus went alone,
- 16:25Speaker 3: filled with God's Spirit, to the wilderness. He fasted 40
- 16:29Speaker 3: days and was tempted by God's adversary, the devil. Satan
- 16:33Speaker 3: knew that Jesus' presence and ministry would spell his end,
- 16:36Speaker 3: his ultimate defeat. So he attacked him at the very
- 16:40Speaker 3: outset of his ministry, trying to destroy the mission of God.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Just as he had done with Adam and Eve, Satan
- 16:46Speaker 3: twisted God's word. But Jesus stood firm against every attack.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Each temptation he fired back with scripture, showing that with
- 16:55Speaker 3: God's word, we overcome the enemy. The word of God
- 16:59Speaker 3: is like a weapon. It is a sword, the sword
- 17:01Speaker 3: of the Spirit. This was real temptation. This was more
- 17:05Speaker 3: than just the testing of Jesus' mind and metal. In
- 17:09Speaker 3: this moment, Jesus demonstrates that he can identify with us
- 17:13Speaker 3: and the temptations we face. Because just as he faced
- 17:16Speaker 3: and overcame temptations in his life, he empowers us now
- 17:20Speaker 3: by his Spirit to overcome every temptation. He went to
- 17:24Speaker 3: the cross and died for our sins so that we
- 17:27Speaker 3: no longer need to be bound by our sins. Satan
- 17:31Speaker 3: is soundly defeated, and now we can live in the
- 17:33Speaker 3: victory that is ours in Christ. Thank you, Jesus, for
- 17:37Speaker 3: coming to this earth to take away our sins. We
- 17:40Speaker 3: know that you are the Lamb of God, the precious
- 17:43Speaker 3: one who gave your life on the cross so that
- 17:45Speaker 3: we could be forgiven. Thank you for taking on every
- 17:49Speaker 3: temptation of the enemy. so that we could live in
- 17:52Speaker 3: the promise and in the peace of victory in you.
- 17:55Speaker 3: And we pray this in your powerful and saving name. Amen.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
