- 0:00Good morning, family.
- 0:05Good morning.
- 0:08Good job, good job.
- 0:10A couple things.
- 0:12First things first.
- 0:14I want to encourage you, especially parents with young ones,
- 0:19to be more open to the world.
- 0:23I want to encourage you, especially parents with young ones, okay?
- 0:31There's a beautiful little, I want to say it's a poem, is it a poem?
- 0:37It's a poem that's written to parents who bring their little ones to church.
- 0:43And as Mount Eaton family, we encourage and absolutely love them being here.
- 0:48So I want you to know, it's obvious that they're here, that we are so thankful that they are here with us
- 0:56and that you are here with us.
- 1:04As they learn to grow and as they learn these things, things change over time.
- 1:13And I just want to encourage you with those words.
- 1:16I think it's important that as it was in the early days of the church before Sunday school
- 1:24and quote unquote children's church, kids sat in church with their parents.
- 1:30And it's important that they hear and learn and develop and to grow in the faith with us together.
- 1:39So thank you, family, for being so gracious and understanding.
- 1:43And I want them to know that this is their home as well as it is ours.
- 1:48And they mean a whole lot to us.
- 1:51So if you would please stand as we read the Apostles Creed.
- 2:01Read with me.
- 2:03I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ,
- 2:09his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
- 2:16suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried.
- 2:22He ascended into Hades.
- 2:24The third day he rose again from the dead.
- 2:27He ascended into heaven and he sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
- 2:33From hence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
- 2:37I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
- 2:43the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
- 2:49Amen. You may be seated.
- 2:52It's important that we continue to think about these orthodoxies.
- 2:57And orthodoxies are vitally important to continue to maintain the doctrines
- 3:03that are passed down from generation to generation.
- 3:07It was crucial for me, even in my life as a young boy, when I go to my dad's church,
- 3:12which would be once in a while, that I heard these things on a regular basis.
- 3:17And for some reason the church has, some churches have run away from orthodoxy
- 3:22because they're considered ritualistic or old.
- 3:25But when you hear the truths of that statement that the Apostles brought to us
- 3:32as a creed, as something to share from generation to generation,
- 3:37it gets instilled in the hearts and in the minds of our young people and they carry it.
- 3:43And in many cases it's like the beginning that causes a thirst and a hunger for God's Word
- 3:49because we hear the doctrines and truths that are in it.
- 3:53So we're going to be dealing with some of that today and dealing with what we think about,
- 3:59what we think about matters, what we think about matters.
- 4:03So before we get started I want to pray.
- 4:06Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 4:09Thank you for your Word. Your Word is true. You are truth.
- 4:12We thank you that in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation
- 4:16you have given us everything for life and godliness to clearly show and to live out
- 4:23and to set our minds on things above, not on things of the earth.
- 4:26So Lord I pray that you would guide us that the full counsel of your Word is spoken.
- 4:30The Holy Spirit, you would implant your Word deep in our minds and our hearts
- 4:33and that it would produce fruit beyond measure.
- 4:38Lord we thank you, we praise you for your faithfulness and goodness
- 4:41and thank you Lord for your Word in Jesus' name, Amen.
- 4:45So I'm going to read Philippians 4, 4-7 and then we'll go right into verse 8.
- 4:51As you guys remember in Philippians 4-6 at the very end
- 4:55he says concerning the people of Philippi that your names are written in the book of life.
- 5:01So your names are written in the book of life.
- 5:04Therefore rejoice in the Lord always.
- 5:06Again I say, I will say rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.
- 5:12Why? Because the Lord is at hand. He is near.
- 5:15And if He is near then do not be anxious about anything
- 5:18but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
- 5:21let your requests be known to God.
- 5:24And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding
- 5:26will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- 5:31Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
- 5:36whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
- 5:40whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence,
- 5:44if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
- 5:51The question is how much of our mind, how much time and space and thought do we give to God?
- 6:03The reality is I think for many of us our minds get distracted
- 6:09because we are worried about everything else that is around us.
- 6:11We are not worried about thinking about Him
- 6:14regardless of what is happening in our lives.
- 6:17We are human and as a result we worry and we think and we ponder
- 6:22on all the things you can't control.
- 6:27And that is very similar to what was happening among Iorio and Suntuke.
- 6:35They were too worried about their battle with each other,
- 6:40their lack of peace with each other
- 6:43and not committed to the unity of the body.
- 6:47And so God reminds us again of what really matters.
- 6:52What happens to the mind when it gets distracted?
- 6:55When it thinks about everything else but Him?
- 6:59Well, Justin Peters calls it the disengaged mind.
- 7:04And here is a statement, the disengaged mind is the enemy of the Christian.
- 7:09It is not engaged in the things that matter,
- 7:12it is disengaged from the things that matter.
- 7:15It is disengaged from the truth of the Word of God,
- 7:17it is disengaged from the doctrine,
- 7:19it is disengaged from Christ Himself.
- 7:21We are too worried about other things
- 7:23and so our minds and our energy and our thoughts
- 7:26and all the things that matter that don't matter we think about
- 7:30but everything that does matter is an afterthought.
- 7:35Jesus reminds us of the importance of where our minds should be.
- 7:40In Matthew 22, 37 He says,
- 7:42And He said to them,
- 7:43You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
- 7:46with all your soul, and with all your mind.
- 7:49And in Luke it says,
- 7:50And with all your strength, with all your heart,
- 7:52the deepest part of man, with all our soul,
- 7:58with our inner being, with all our mind,
- 8:02with every thought set upon Christ,
- 8:05and with all our strength, with our physical body.
- 8:07What He is saying is that you shall love God
- 8:10with every single ounce of your being,
- 8:14material and immaterial.
- 8:18And so Paul reminds us this in Philippians 4, 8.
- 8:22He says, Finally.
- 8:24What's interesting about this word,
- 8:25finally means remaining the rest,
- 8:28or the rest of things that remain.
- 8:31In other words, out of everything I've just told you,
- 8:35along with all of these other remaining things.
- 8:42Brothers, whatever is true.
- 8:46What is the word true?
- 8:48The word true is literally true,
- 8:50loving the truth, speaking the truth, or truthfulness.
- 8:56Christ is truth.
- 8:59So whatever is true, whatever is of Christ,
- 9:04how much of Him is your mind occupied with?
- 9:10How important is He to you?
- 9:15How much time?
- 9:17Do people really look at the reality
- 9:20that you are totally, completely sold out for Jesus,
- 9:23and the main person that you think about most of the time is Him?
- 9:28Many would say, but you should also be thinking about your wife.
- 9:32If I'm thinking about Jesus,
- 9:34then I'm thinking about Jesus and my wife.
- 9:38Think about that.
- 9:40I don't think my wife's going to argue with that point.
- 9:44Whatever is honorable.
- 9:46The word honorable is respected or impressive,
- 9:50greatly respected.
- 9:52How much of God's things, His word, Him,
- 9:56do you look at as impressive or greatly respected?
- 10:01See, when you respect something, you think about it.
- 10:05You spend time pondering these things.
- 10:09Whatever is just.
- 10:11Now, many would think that this idea of justice, social justice,
- 10:15that's not what this word is.
- 10:17Actually, it's not a very good translation.
- 10:19This is one of the words in ESV that I'm like,
- 10:21eh, it could have picked a better word.
- 10:24But understanding what God is talking about here,
- 10:28this idea of just means righteous.
- 10:31Whatever is right, virtuous, upright.
- 10:34Only Christ is righteous.
- 10:38There's no one righteous, no, not one.
- 10:40He alone is righteous.
- 10:42And He alone is respected and should be respected.
- 10:47So whatever is righteous, do you think about these things?
- 10:53When I think about righteousness,
- 10:55I think about the ways of God.
- 10:57Which should be produced in our lives on a regular basis.
- 11:00Are we living righteously?
- 11:03I would say probably not because we don't think righteously.
- 11:09Whatever is pure.
- 11:11Actually, yeah, whatever is pure.
- 11:14And let me give you one more thing on the issue of righteous.
- 11:17It's also the idea of whatever is approved of or acceptable of God,
- 11:24holy, is Christ holy to you?
- 11:29Have you set apart Christ in your heart as holy?
- 11:35So whatever is pure.
- 11:36This word pure is the idea of sacred or perfect.
- 11:39The most holy thing.
- 11:44That's probably one of the reasons why as men,
- 11:46this is probably the one thing we struggle with the most as men.
- 11:50Because men think about other things.
- 11:52We don't think like women think.
- 11:55We're easily distracted just by vision.
- 11:58Easily distracted by our own desires.
- 12:02And I shared this in early service also.
- 12:05When we look at the reality of things being sacred or perfect or holy,
- 12:12have we really sanctified, have we really looked at the reality
- 12:16that Christ is the most holy thing?
- 12:21I think for us as men it's difficult.
- 12:26Then he says whatever is lovely, whatever is acceptable or pleasing.
- 12:32So if Christ is the sacred one, do I look at him as the lovely one?
- 12:39As he is acceptable and pleasing.
- 12:41And are my thoughts and my deeds acceptable and pleasing to him?
- 12:46Or do I just find things wrong?
- 12:52Whatever is commendable.
- 12:54Commendable is this idea of sounding well, well spoken of or reputable.
- 13:01Are our lives, do our thoughts reflect our lives?
- 13:07Do our thoughts in reality talk about what is well spoken of of my life?
- 13:12Am I above reproach?
- 13:18It's sort of like this idea of what a man thinks so he is.
- 13:23I like what Vodi Bakum says, a man doesn't do what he thinks,
- 13:28he does what he believes.
- 13:30Because eventually what you think about becomes what you believe.
- 13:35If you think little of Christ, then Christ will be little.
- 13:39But if you think great of Christ, the God of all creation,
- 13:43he will be the God of your life.
- 13:45We've talked about this before where we look at these things
- 13:49and we look at our lives as completely defeated.
- 13:52It's like everything I do I just never get by, it's never enough.
- 13:56I can never finish.
- 13:59Why do bad things always happen to me?
- 14:03How much time and thought does Christ leave with you?
- 14:08How much time do you give to him?
- 14:11And how much time do you spend listening or reading his word?
- 14:16How much time do you love him?
- 14:19Or do you only love him when you're in need?
- 14:23Is your life a life of a sacrifice to him as a fragrant offering?
- 14:33Is your life reputable?
- 14:37That's one of the things I think about, let my kids carry my name.
- 14:43And I want my name to be looked upon as a name that reflects Christ.
- 14:51That when they remember Cain, they don't remember me,
- 14:55but they remember Christ.
- 14:57The Cain family loves Jesus.
- 15:00That's what it means that we would be commendable, well spoken of.
- 15:06The second is, the last two is, if there is any excellence, any excellence,
- 15:14the word excellence here is virtuous course of thought,
- 15:18moral excellence, praise, or virtue.
- 15:21You notice it's not by accident that this idea of excellence is what you think about.
- 15:28You will do what you think about, I mean what you believe.
- 15:32What you believe is what you think about.
- 15:35How much time do you put on these thoughts?
- 15:38Because eventually you will believe it.
- 15:43If there's any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise,
- 15:50this word praise is commendable,
- 15:54approbation, a very important word, this idea of worthy of all praise and glory.
- 16:02It's just worthy of everything that you have in you to bring.
- 16:06Because in reality if you don't praise, the rocks will praise.
- 16:12I think when we think about earthquakes, we look at them as a bad thing.
- 16:20I look at them really as the earth is praising God.
- 16:23If you're not going to do it, it's going to do it.
- 16:27So much so it shakes.
- 16:29When you think about the ocean and the ocean's roar, it praises God.
- 16:36When you think about the birds, the birds praise God.
- 16:39When you think about every animal that goes about and makes noise,
- 16:43whether it's the fox at night, it praises God.
- 16:47The earth and everything in it will praise God, even if God's people will not.
- 16:53Sadly I think that God's people complain more than they praise.
- 16:58How can we miss this moment of praise and glory to the only God of all creation?
- 17:05Well, because our minds are too focused on our problems
- 17:10and we miss the awesome, amazing, living God of all creation,
- 17:15the beautiful and lovely Christ.
- 17:21Colossians 3, 1-3 says this,
- 17:23If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above,
- 17:30where Christ is seated at the right hand of God,
- 17:35and set your minds on things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.
- 17:42For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
- 17:50So not only should your minds be completely saturated with the reality of who Christ is,
- 17:57but you should be thinking about it all the time.
- 18:01You're probably like, but that's a Jesus freak.
- 18:04Exactly.
- 18:07You wonder why Christians live defeated lives.
- 18:11Because their mind isn't on the king.
- 18:15That doesn't mean that in our lives we're not going to struggle.
- 18:19In reality, if we reset our minds back on Christ, this is what it says.
- 18:25Here it is, last principle.
- 18:28Live in such a way that when others watch your life,
- 18:35they don't see you, they see Christ in you.
- 18:39Live in such a way that when others watch your life,
- 18:42they don't see you, they see Christ in you.
- 18:46That's what it says in 1 Peter chapter 2 verse 21,
- 18:49for to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you,
- 18:54leaving you an example so that you might follow in his steps.
- 19:01Philippians 4.9, what you have learned.
- 19:07And what you have learned, you have received.
- 19:09And what you have received, you have heard.
- 19:12And what you have heard, you have seen.
- 19:15And be careful in this when you have learned, and received,
- 19:19and heard, and seen in me, practice these things.
- 19:28It's interesting that Paul tells Timothy,
- 19:31Timothy follow me as I follow Christ.
- 19:37The Christian life is meant to be modeled.
- 19:40learned and received and heard but seen and not only seen but modeled practiced
- 19:47lived out why so that you will follow you have godly men who love Christ who
- 19:56live above reproach before you all the time we are here as examples for you to
- 20:03follow not only follow but you have learned and not only are you learning
- 20:08but you're receiving and not only are you see receiving you are hearing now
- 20:12all the time and not only have you heard but you have seen you can live the life
- 20:23that Christ has called you to live even in the midst of difficult and suffering
- 20:29times and so this is what Paul ends with that when you practice these things
- 20:38when you when you practice what when you practice whatever isn't true whatever is
- 20:47honorable whatever is righteous whatever is pure whatever is lovely whatever is
- 20:52commendable if there's any excellence if there's anything worthy of praise set
- 20:58your mind on these things think about these things why because the peace of
- 21:02God the God of peace will be with you it's an imperative not that he's maybe
- 21:09he will and what does he what else does he say what else does he say in verse
- 21:16seven he says and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard
- 21:25your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus you notice the continual far here
- 21:29if our minds are on Christ we don't have to be anxious if we think about Christ
- 21:35we don't have to be anxious that doesn't mean life's not gonna happen it means I
- 21:39don't have to be anxious about it why because he's near he is with me he is
- 21:44literally in me and with me all the time I can call upon him anytime I need him
- 21:49the problem is we want the answer now we want the fast food Jesus and that's not
- 21:59the way God works why well he doesn't work that way because he has predestined
- 22:09you to be conformed into the image of his son God doesn't take away your stuff
- 22:14because it's difficult because he has a bigger plan in your life than your
- 22:20comfort his plan is to conform you into the image of Jesus without those things
- 22:26you won't know and learn and develop the tools that are necessary in your mind
- 22:31to think about him all the time learning to suffer well is the reality of the
- 22:39character of surrender but learning to praise him in the midst of the good and
- 22:50the bad is the reality of honor and peace
- 22:59Christ is all you need he has given you everything you need for life and
- 23:05godliness you need nothing but what's occupying your mind is it the things
- 23:16that are true and honorable and just and pure and lovely and commendable are you
- 23:21seeking to do all things in excellence is is your life filled with the worthy
- 23:29things of praise what do you think about it's one thing that think about these
- 23:40things it's another to literally live them so whatever you have learned
- 23:46whatever you've received and whatever you've heard and whatever you have seen
- 23:52in me Paul says and as as your pastor my greatest passion is to live out Christ
- 24:06and I'm not perfect at it but man when he has the heart of the men of your
- 24:14church follow and practice these things test them out prove us to be true and if
- 24:27you prove us to be false then run but the men of God when they are living
- 24:34according to the truth of the Word of God when you get that you hold on to it
- 24:43practice these things and the God of peace will be with you father I want to
- 24:51thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness thank you for your holiness
- 24:57thank you that you have given us everything for life and godliness thank
- 25:03you that you have you have called us implored us and treated us to think
- 25:12about whatever is true and honorable just and pure and lovely and commendable
- 25:18that you have called us to excellence and to be to be thinking about the things
- 25:24that are worthy of praise help us to walk intimately with you in all things to
- 25:32love you supremely more than we love anything and anyone else help us to be a
- 25:38light in a very dark dark generation or do we praise you and thank you in Jesus
- 25:45name amen
