- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter thirty seven. The Scriptures a safeguard to the law
- 0:05Speaker 1: and to the testimony. If they speak not according to
- 0:08Speaker 1: this word, it is because there is no light in them.
- 0:12Speaker 1: The people of God are directed to the scriptures as
- 0:15Speaker 1: their safeguard against the influence of false teachers and the
- 0:18Speaker 1: delusive power of spirits of darkness. Satan employs every possible
- 0:23Speaker 1: device to prevent men from obtaining a knowledge of the Bible,
- 0:27Speaker 1: for its plain utterances reveal his deceptions. At every revival
- 0:32Speaker 1: of God's work, the Prince of Evil is aroused to
- 0:34Speaker 1: more intense activity. He is now putting forth his utmost
- 0:38Speaker 1: efforts for a final struggle against Christ and his followers.
- 0:42Speaker 1: The last great delusion is soon to open before us.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Antichrist is to perform his marvelous works in our sight.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So closely will the counterfeit resemble the true that it
- 0:54Speaker 1: will be impossible to distinguish between them except by the
- 0:58Speaker 1: Holy Scriptures. By their testimony, every statement in every miracle
- 1:03Speaker 1: must be tested. Those who endeavor to obey all the
- 1:07Speaker 1: commandments of God will be opposed and derided. They can
- 1:10Speaker 1: stand only in God. In order to endure the trial
- 1:15Speaker 1: before them, they must understand the will of God as
- 1:18Speaker 1: revealed in his word. They can honor him only as
- 1:21Speaker 1: they have a right conception of his character, government, and purposes,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and act in accordance with them. None but those who
- 1:28Speaker 1: have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible
- 1:30Speaker 1: will stand through the last great conflict. To every soul
- 1:34Speaker 1: will come the searching test. Shall I obey God rather
- 1:38Speaker 1: than men? The decisive hour is even now at hand.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Are our feet planted on the rock of God's immutable word?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Are we prepared to stand firm in defense of the
- 1:48Speaker 1: commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. Before his crucifixion,
- 1:53Speaker 1: the Savior explained to his disciples that he was to
- 1:55Speaker 1: be put to death and to rise again from the tomb,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and angels present to impress his words on minds and hearts.
- 2:04Speaker 1: But the disciples were looking for temporal deliverance from the
- 2:06Speaker 1: Roman yoke, and they could not tolerate the thought that
- 2:09Speaker 1: he in whom all their hopes centered should suffer an
- 2:12Speaker 1: ignominious death. The words which they needed to remember were
- 2:16Speaker 1: banished from their minds, and when the time of trial came,
- 2:19Speaker 1: it found them unprepared. The death of Jesus as fully
- 2:23Speaker 1: destroyed their hopes, as if he had not forewarned them.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So in the prophecies, the future is opened before us
- 2:31Speaker 1: as plainly as it was opened to the disciples by
- 2:33Speaker 1: the words of Christ. The events connected with the close
- 2:37Speaker 1: of probation and the work of preparation for the time
- 2:40Speaker 1: of trouble are clearly presented. But multitudes have no more
- 2:44Speaker 1: understanding of these important truths than if they had never
- 2:48Speaker 1: been revealed. Satan watches to catch away every impression that
- 2:52Speaker 1: would make them wise unto salvation, and the time of
- 2:55Speaker 1: trouble will find them unready. When God sends to men
- 2:59Speaker 1: war so important that they are represented as proclaimed by
- 3:03Speaker 1: holy angels flying in the midst of heaven, he requires
- 3:06Speaker 1: every person endowed with reasoning powers to heed the message.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The fearful judgments denounced against the worship of the Beast
- 3:13Speaker 1: and his image should lead all to a diligent study
- 3:16Speaker 1: of the prophecies to learn what the mark of the
- 3:18Speaker 1: Beast is and how they are to avoid receiving it.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But the masses of the people turn away their ears
- 3:24Speaker 1: from hearing the truth and are turned unto fables. The
- 3:29Speaker 1: apostle Paul declared, looking down to the last days, the
- 3:32Speaker 1: time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.
- 3:36Speaker 1: That time has fully come. The multitudes do not want
- 3:40Speaker 1: Bible truth because it interferes with the desires of the
- 3:42Speaker 1: sinful world loving heart, and Satan supplies the deceptions which
- 3:47Speaker 1: they love. But God will have a people upon the
- 3:50Speaker 1: earth to maintain the Bible, and the Bible only as
- 3:53Speaker 1: the standard of all doctrines and the basis of all reforms.
- 3:58Speaker 1: The opinions of learned men, the deductions of science, the
- 4:01Speaker 1: creeds or decisions of ecclesiastical councils as numerous and discordant
- 4:06Speaker 1: as are the churches which they represent the voice of
- 4:09Speaker 1: the majority. Not one nor all of these should be
- 4:12Speaker 1: regarded as evidence for or against any point of religious faith.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Before accepting any doctrine or precept, we should demand a plain.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Thus saith the Lord in its support Satan is constantly
- 4:25Speaker 1: endeavoring to attract attention to man in the place of God.
- 4:29Speaker 1: He leads the people to look to bishops, to pastors,
- 4:32Speaker 1: to professors of theology as their guides instead of searching
- 4:35Speaker 1: the scriptures to learn their duty for themselves. Then by
- 4:40Speaker 1: controlling the minds of these leaders, he can influence the multitudes.
- 4:43Speaker 1: According to his will. When Christ came to speak the
- 4:47Speaker 1: words of life, the common people heard him gladly, and
- 4:51Speaker 1: many even of the priests and rulers believed on him.
- 4:55Speaker 1: But the chief of the priesthood and the leading men
- 4:57Speaker 1: of the nation were determined to condemn and repudiate his
- 4:59Speaker 1: death teachings. Though they were baffled in all their efforts
- 5:03Speaker 1: to find accusations against him, though they could not but
- 5:07Speaker 1: feel the influence of the divine power and wisdom attending
- 5:10Speaker 1: his words, yet they encased themselves in prejudice. They rejected
- 5:14Speaker 1: the clearest evidence of his messiahship, lest they should be
- 5:18Speaker 1: forced to become his disciples. These opponents of Jesus were
- 5:22Speaker 1: men whom the people had been taught from infancy to reverence,
- 5:25Speaker 1: to whose authority they had been accustomed implicitly to bow.
- 5:30Speaker 1: How is it they asked that our rulers and learn
- 5:32Speaker 1: its scribes do not believe on Jesus. Would not these
- 5:35Speaker 1: pious men receive him if he were the Christ? It
- 5:39Speaker 1: was the influence of such teachers that led the Jewish
- 5:42Speaker 1: nation to reject their redeemer. The spirit which actuated those
- 5:47Speaker 1: priests and rulers is still manifested by many who make
- 5:50Speaker 1: a high profession of piety. They refused to examine the
- 5:54Speaker 1: testimony of the scriptures concerning the special truths for this time.
- 5:59Speaker 1: They point to their own numbers, wealth, and popularity, and
- 6:02Speaker 1: look with contempt upon the advocates of truth as few,
- 6:05Speaker 1: poor and unpopular, having a faith that separates them from
- 6:09Speaker 1: the world. Christ foresaw that the undue assumption of authority
- 6:14Speaker 1: indulged by the scribes and Pharisees would not cease with
- 6:17Speaker 1: the dispersion of the Jews. He had a prophetic view
- 6:21Speaker 1: of the work of exalting human authority to rule the conscience,
- 6:24Speaker 1: which has been so terrible a curse to the Church
- 6:27Speaker 1: in all ages, and his fearful denunciations of the scribes
- 6:31Speaker 1: and Pharisees, and his warnings to the people not to
- 6:34Speaker 1: follow these blind leaders, were placed on record as an
- 6:37Speaker 1: admonition to future generations. The Roman Church reserves to the
- 6:42Speaker 1: clergy the right to interpret the scriptures, on the ground
- 6:46Speaker 1: that ecclesiastics alone are competent to explain God's word. It
- 6:50Speaker 1: is withheld from the common people. Though the Reformation gave
- 6:54Speaker 1: the scriptures to all, yet the self same principle which
- 6:57Speaker 1: was maintained by Rome preventsimble titudes and Protestant churches from
- 7:01Speaker 1: searching the Bible for themselves. They are taught to accept
- 7:06Speaker 1: its teachings as interpreted by the Church, and there are
- 7:09Speaker 1: thousands who dare receive nothing, however plainly revealed in Scripture,
- 7:13Speaker 1: that is contrary to their creed or the established teaching
- 7:16Speaker 1: of their church. Notwithstanding the Bible is full of warnings
- 7:21Speaker 1: against false teachers. Many are ready, thus to commit the
- 7:24Speaker 1: keeping of their souls to the clergy. There are to
- 7:27Speaker 1: day thousands of professors of religion who can give no
- 7:30Speaker 1: other reason for points of faith which they hold than
- 7:33Speaker 1: that they were so instructed by their religious leaders. They
- 7:37Speaker 1: pass by the Saviour's teachings almost unnoticed, and place implicit
- 7:41Speaker 1: confidence in the words of the ministers. But our ministers infallible.
- 7:46Speaker 1: How can we trust our souls to their guidance unless
- 7:49Speaker 1: we know from God's word that they are light bearers.
- 7:52Speaker 1: A lack of moral courage to step aside from the
- 7:55Speaker 1: beaten track of the world leads many to follow in
- 7:58Speaker 1: the steps of learned men, and by their reluctance to
- 8:01Speaker 1: investigate for themselves, they are becoming hopelessly fastened in the
- 8:05Speaker 1: chains of error. They see that the truth for this
- 8:09Speaker 1: time is plainly brought to view in the Bible, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: they feel the power of the Holy Spirit attending its proclamation.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Yet they allow the opposition of the clergy to turn
- 8:18Speaker 1: them from the light. Though reason and conscience are convinced,
- 8:23Speaker 1: these deluded souls dare not think differently from the minister
- 8:26Speaker 1: and their individual judgment. Their eternal interests are sacrificed to
- 8:31Speaker 1: the unbelief, the pride and prejudice of another. Many are
- 8:36Speaker 1: the ways by which Satan works, through human influence to
- 8:38Speaker 1: bind his captives. He secures multitudes to himself by attaching
- 8:44Speaker 1: them by the silken cords of affection to those who
- 8:47Speaker 1: are enemies of the Cross of Christ. Whatever this attachment
- 8:51Speaker 1: may be parental, filial, conjugal, or social, the effect is
- 8:56Speaker 1: the same. The opposers of truth exert their power to
- 8:59Speaker 1: control the conscience, and the souls held under their sway
- 9:02Speaker 1: have not sufficient courage or independence to obey their own
- 9:06Speaker 1: convictions of duty. The truth and the glory of God
- 9:10Speaker 1: are inseparable. It is impossible for us, with the Bible
- 9:13Speaker 1: within our reach, to honor God. By erroneous opinions. Many
- 9:18Speaker 1: claim that it matters not what one believes. If his
- 9:21Speaker 1: life is only right, but the life is molded by
- 9:24Speaker 1: the faith. If light and truth is within our reach,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and we neglect to improve the privilege of hearing and
- 9:31Speaker 1: seeing it, we virtually reject it. We are choosing darkness
- 9:35Speaker 1: rather than light. There is a way that seemeth right
- 9:38Speaker 1: unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways
- 9:41Speaker 1: of death. Ignorance is no excuse for error or sin
- 9:46Speaker 1: when there is every opportunity to know the will of God.
- 9:50Speaker 1: A man is traveling and comes to a place where
- 9:52Speaker 1: there are several roads and a guide board indicating where
- 9:56Speaker 1: each one leads. If he disregards the guide board and
- 9:59Speaker 1: takes whichever seems to him to be right, he may
- 10:02Speaker 1: be ever so sincere, but will in all probability find
- 10:05Speaker 1: himself on the wrong road. God has given us his
- 10:09Speaker 1: word that we may become acquainted with its teachings and
- 10:12Speaker 1: know for ourselves what He requires of us. When the
- 10:16Speaker 1: lawyer came to Jesus with the inquiry what shall I
- 10:19Speaker 1: do to inherit eternal life? The Savior referred him to
- 10:23Speaker 1: the scriptures, saying, what is written in the law, how
- 10:26Speaker 1: readest thou Ignorance will not excuse young or old, nor
- 10:31Speaker 1: release them from the punishment due for the transgression of
- 10:33Speaker 1: God's law, because there is in their hands a faithful
- 10:37Speaker 1: presentation of that law and of its principles and its claims.
- 10:42Speaker 1: It is not enough to have good intentions. It is
- 10:44Speaker 1: not enough to do what a man thinks is right,
- 10:47Speaker 1: or what the minister tells him is right. His sole's
- 10:51Speaker 1: salvation is at stake, and he should search the scriptures
- 10:54Speaker 1: for himself. However strong may be his convictions, however confident
- 10:59Speaker 1: he may be. The minister knows what is truth. This
- 11:02Speaker 1: is not his foundation. He has a chart pointing out
- 11:06Speaker 1: every way mark on the heavenward journey, and he ought
- 11:09Speaker 1: not to guess at anything. It is the first and
- 11:12Speaker 1: highest duty of every rational being to learn from the
- 11:16Speaker 1: scriptures what is truth, and then to walk in the
- 11:18Speaker 1: light and encourage others to follow his example. We should,
- 11:23Speaker 1: day by day study the Bible, diligently, weighing every thought
- 11:27Speaker 1: and comparing scripture with scripture. With divine help, we are
- 11:31Speaker 1: to form our opinions for ourselves, as we are to
- 11:34Speaker 1: answer for ourselves before God. The truths most plainly revealed
- 11:39Speaker 1: in the Bible have been involved in doubt and darkness
- 11:41Speaker 1: by learned men, who, with a pretense of great wisdom,
- 11:45Speaker 1: teach that the scriptures have a mystical, a secret spiritual
- 11:48Speaker 1: meaning not apparent in the language employed. These men are
- 11:52Speaker 1: false teachers. It was to such a class that Jesus declared,
- 11:56Speaker 1: ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God.
- 12:00Speaker 1: The language of the Bible should be explained according to
- 12:03Speaker 1: its obvious meaning, unless a symbol or figure is employed.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Christ has given the promise, if any man will do
- 12:10Speaker 1: his will, he shall know of the doctrine. If men
- 12:14Speaker 1: would but take the Bible as it reads, if there
- 12:16Speaker 1: were no false teachers to mislead and confuse their minds,
- 12:20Speaker 1: a work would be accomplished that would make angels glad,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and that would bring into the fold of Christ thousands
- 12:26Speaker 1: upon thousands who are now wandering in error. We should
- 12:30Speaker 1: exert all the powers of the mind in the study
- 12:32Speaker 1: of the scriptures, and should task the understanding to comprehend
- 12:36Speaker 1: as far as mortals can the deep things of God.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yet we must not forget that the docility and submission
- 12:42Speaker 1: of a child is the true spirit of the learner.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Scriptural difficulties can never be mastered by the same methods
- 12:49Speaker 1: that are employed in grappling with philosophical problems. We should
- 12:53Speaker 1: not engage in the study of the Bible with that
- 12:56Speaker 1: self reliance with which so many enter the domains of science,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but with a prayerful dependence upon God and a sincere
- 13:03Speaker 1: desire to learn His will. We must come with a
- 13:07Speaker 1: humble and teachable spirit to obtain knowledge from the Great
- 13:10Speaker 1: I Am. Otherwise evil angels will so blind our minds
- 13:15Speaker 1: and harden our hearts that we shall not be impressed
- 13:18Speaker 1: by the truth. Many A portion of scripture which learned
- 13:22Speaker 1: men pronounce a mystery or pass over as unimportant, is
- 13:26Speaker 1: full of comfort and instruction to him who has been
- 13:28Speaker 1: taught in the school of Christ. One reason why many
- 13:32Speaker 1: theologians have no clear understanding of God's word is they
- 13:36Speaker 1: close their eyes to truths which they do not wish
- 13:38Speaker 1: to practice. An understanding of Bible truth depends not so
- 13:43Speaker 1: much on the power of intellect brought to the search
- 13:46Speaker 1: as on the singleness of purpose, the earnest longing after righteousness.
- 13:51Speaker 1: The Bible should never be studied without prayer. The Holy
- 13:55Speaker 1: Spirit alone can cause us to feel the importance of
- 13:58Speaker 1: those things easy to be understood or prevent us from
- 14:01Speaker 1: resting truths difficult of comprehension. It is the office of
- 14:06Speaker 1: heavenly angels to prepare the heart so to comprehend God's word,
- 14:10Speaker 1: that we shall be charmed with its beauty, admonished by
- 14:13Speaker 1: its warnings, or animated and strengthened by its promises. We
- 14:18Speaker 1: should make the Psalmist's petition our own. Open thou mine eyes,
- 14:21Speaker 1: that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Temptations often appear irresistible, because through neglect of prayer and
- 14:29Speaker 1: the study of the Bible, the tempted one cannot readily
- 14:32Speaker 1: remember God's promises and meet Satan with the scripture weapons.
- 14:38Speaker 1: But angels are round about those who are willing to
- 14:40Speaker 1: be taught in divine things, and in the time of
- 14:43Speaker 1: great necessity, they will bring to their remembrance to the
- 14:46Speaker 1: very truths which are needed. Thus, when the enemy shall
- 14:50Speaker 1: come in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord
- 14:52Speaker 1: shall lift up a standard against him. Jesus promised his
- 14:56Speaker 1: disciples the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
- 15:00Speaker 1: Father will send in my name. He shall teach you
- 15:03Speaker 1: all things and bring all things to your remembrance. Whatsoever
- 15:07Speaker 1: I have said unto you. But the teachings of Christ
- 15:10Speaker 1: must previously have been stored in the mind in order
- 15:13Speaker 1: for the Spirit of God to bring them to our remembrance.
- 15:16Speaker 1: In the time of peril, Thy word have I hid
- 15:19Speaker 1: in mine heart, said David, that I might not sin
- 15:22Speaker 1: against thee. All who value their eternal interests should be
- 15:26Speaker 1: on their guard against the inroads of skepticism. The very
- 15:30Speaker 1: pillars of truth will be assailed. It is impossible to
- 15:33Speaker 1: keep beyond the reach of the sarcasms and sophisms, the
- 15:37Speaker 1: insidious and pestilent teachings of modern infidelity. Satan adapts his
- 15:43Speaker 1: temptations to all classes. He assails the illiterate with a
- 15:46Speaker 1: jest or sneer, while he meets the educated with scientific
- 15:50Speaker 1: objections and philosophical reasoning alike, calculated to excite distrust or
- 15:55Speaker 1: contempt of the scriptures. Even youth of little experience presumed
- 16:00Speaker 1: to insinuate doubts concerning the fundamental principles of Christianity, and
- 16:05Speaker 1: this youthful infidelity, shallow as it is, has its influence.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Many are thus led to jest at the faith of
- 16:12Speaker 1: their fathers, and to do despite to the spirit of grace.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Many a life that promised to be an honor to
- 16:18Speaker 1: God and a blessing to the world, has been blighted
- 16:21Speaker 1: by the foul breath of infidelity. All who trust to
- 16:25Speaker 1: the boastful decisions of human reason and imagine that they
- 16:28Speaker 1: can explain divine mysteries and arrive at truth unaided by
- 16:32Speaker 1: the wisdom of God are entangled in the snare of Satan.
- 16:36Speaker 1: We are living in the most solemn period of this
- 16:39Speaker 1: world's history. The destiny of Earth's teeming multitudes is about
- 16:43Speaker 1: to be decided. Our own future well being and also
- 16:47Speaker 1: the salvation of other souls depend upon the course which
- 16:51Speaker 1: we now pursue. We need to be guided by the
- 16:54Speaker 1: spirit of truth. Every follower of Christ should earnestly inquire,
- 16:59Speaker 1: Lord Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? We
- 17:02Speaker 1: need to humble ourselves before the Lord with fasting and prayer,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and to meditate much upon his word, especially upon the
- 17:10Speaker 1: scenes of the judgment. We should now seek a deep
- 17:13Speaker 1: and living experience in the things of God. We have
- 17:17Speaker 1: not a moment to lose. Events of vital importance are
- 17:20Speaker 1: taking place around us. We are on Satan's enchanted ground.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Sleep not sentinels of God. The foe is lurking near,
- 17:29Speaker 1: ready at any moment, should you become lax and drowsy,
- 17:32Speaker 1: to spring upon you and make you his prey. Many
- 17:36Speaker 1: are deceived as to their true condition before God. They
- 17:39Speaker 1: congratulate themselves upon the wrong acts which they do not commit,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and forget to enumerate the good and noble deeds which
- 17:45Speaker 1: God requires of them, but which they have neglected to perform.
- 17:50Speaker 1: It is not enough that they are trees in the
- 17:52Speaker 1: garden of God. They are to answer his expectation by
- 17:56Speaker 1: bearing fruit. He holds them accountable for their failure to
- 17:59Speaker 1: accomplish all the good which they could have done through
- 18:02Speaker 1: His grace strengthening them. In the books of Heaven, they
- 18:06Speaker 1: are registered as cumberers of the ground. Yet the case
- 18:10Speaker 1: of even this class is not utterly hopeless. With those
- 18:13Speaker 1: who have slighted God's mercy and abused his grace. The
- 18:16Speaker 1: heart of long suffering love yet pleads, wherefore he saith,
- 18:20Speaker 1: awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and
- 18:23Speaker 1: Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly,
- 18:27Speaker 1: redeeming the time, because the days are evil. When the
- 18:31Speaker 1: testing time shall come, those who have made God's word
- 18:34Speaker 1: their rule of life will be revealed. In summer, there
- 18:37Speaker 1: is no noticeable difference between evergreens and other trees. But
- 18:41Speaker 1: when the blasts of winter come, the evergreens remain unchanged,
- 18:45Speaker 1: while other trees are stripped of their foliage. So the
- 18:49Speaker 1: false hearted professor may not now be distinguished from the
- 18:51Speaker 1: real Christian. But the time is just upon us when
- 18:54Speaker 1: the difference will be apparent. Let opposition arise, Let bigotry
- 19:00Speaker 1: and intolerance again bear sway. Let persecution be kindled, and
- 19:04Speaker 1: the half hearted and hypocritical will waver and yield the faith.
- 19:08Speaker 1: But the true Christian will stand firm as a rock,
- 19:10Speaker 1: his faith stronger, his hope brighter than in days of prosperity,
- 19:16Speaker 1: says the Psalmist. Thy testimonies are my meditation. Through thy
- 19:20Speaker 1: precepts I get understanding. Therefore I hate every false sway.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Happy is the man that findeth wisdom. He shall be
- 19:29Speaker 1: as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth
- 19:32Speaker 1: out her roots by the river, and shall not see
- 19:34Speaker 1: when heat cometh. But her leaves shall be green, and
- 19:37Speaker 1: shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither
- 19:39Speaker 1: shall cease from yielding fruit. End of Chapter thirty seven
