- 0:02SPEAKER_00: One of the things that I've been wanting to do for a while is a series of podcast episodes simply called Kent's Journal.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: And if you've been listening to this podcast for any length of time, you know that uh or you probably realize that I sit in front of my desk um with a microphone and I record episodes either with guests where I'm doing an interview or I'm talking about some topic related to business or writing or content creation or something like that.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And all those are are very much planned out.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Whenever I do solo teaching episodes, they're those are very much scripted out.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I'm not reading from a script, but I basically plan out everything I want to say, and I tend to stick with those.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So I've been wanting to do a series of episodes where I just take a topic and I riff on it a little bit and I talk about something that is working for me or not working for me, and just giving you kind of an update of what's happening in my writing and my life and my business in real time.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So this is the first episode in uh a series just called Kent's Journal.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: These will just be a few minutes each.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And uh today what I want to do is oh, and by the way, if you are wondering why the audio sounds different on this episode, it's because these will be recorded just as I'm out walking, or right now I'm actually sitting in my son's high school parking lot waiting to pick him up from school.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: I'll pick him up from school, we'll go grab something to eat before we head home, because that's kind of what we do many times.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: You know, you gotta do some fun stuff with your kid, especially right now in this pandemic where uh school can really be a major struggle.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, what I'm what I wanted to do on this uh installment of Kent's Journal is share a little bit what's been on my heart regarding Legacy.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite musicals, really one of my favorite uh creative things of all time is Hamilton.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Um Most of you who are listening probably have seen Hamilton on Disney Plus.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Maybe you saw the stage version, maybe you listened to the musical, or all the above.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And I really, really love Hamilton for many reasons.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: There's a great scene almost near the end of Hamilton where Hamilton and Aaron Burr are having their duel, and of course Aaron Burr famously shoots Alexander Hamilton.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Sorry to spoil that for you, but it's been a couple hundred years since that happened, so I guess there's a moratorium on uh, you know, not giving spoilers for for things, but they're doing this scene near the end of the musical where uh Aaron Burr shoots Hamilton, but the bullet has not yet struck Hamilton.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And there's this super cool scene where right before Hamilton is actually shot with that bullet, he goes on this uh he does kind of this monologue or the soliloquy, I guess, where he's reflecting on his life and what is a legacy.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And in one part he says, What is a legacy?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: A legacy is planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And I think that's that's a beautiful representation of what a legacy is.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And I've been thinking about that a lot lately in terms of, you know, I do writing and you do writing if you're listening to this podcast.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And so many times we're thinking about a long-term legacy.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: You know, the books that we write, maybe the podcast episodes that we create, and how that will impact people perhaps for years, or if we're lucky, maybe for decades to come.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And so much of my time I feel like is spent doing my own work and also doing work for clients that will hopefully impact people for many years to come.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: But on the flip side of that, sometimes we miss the life that's happening right around us.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: You know, as I mentioned, I'm sitting here waiting to pick up my son from school.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It's so easy to get to get consumed with my podcast or with client work or with my own writing or with my day job.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And sometimes I I am not 100% engaged in the life happening right around me.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And I'm I'm kind of ashamed to confess that to you.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I'm kind of an internal thinker.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, I can very easily kind of just go inside and get consumed by my own thoughts to the extent that I just sort of miss what's happening in life around me a little bit.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: And maybe you've struggled with the same thing as well.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: So I just want to encourage us to, yeah, we we've got to do that writing, and if we're doing client work or have a business, we've got to be focusing on things that have a long-term impact and long-term potential.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: But the reality is that in a hundred years, you know, in a hundred years, anybody listening to this, including myself, will probably not be alive, and our legacy will be confined to this thing, the things that we wrote down in books or perhaps videos or other kinds of content.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: And people in a hundred years probably will not have personally known us.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: So I hope that we don't miss the life that's happening right in front of us and the ability that we have, the opportunity we have to personally connect with people, our families, friends, people that charge people in our day jobs, clients.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: There's so much life happening right around us that our best opportunity to create a lasting legacy is to really engage with the people in our everyday lives.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And here is my son gets ready to come out from school here in a couple of minutes.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: We're gonna go grab something to eat, and I'm gonna forget about work, and I'm gonna forget about my podcast, and I'm gonna engage with him and really think about what his day was like and ask him some questions and really do my best just to be present in the moment.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And so many of you listening to this, including me, once again, we're engaged in things that are hopefully going to be long term, but there's so much life happening right around us.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: So that's my thought for this uh installment of Kent's Journal.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: I hope this is helpful to you in some way.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: I would love to hear your feedback on uh what you think about this kind of episode.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Do you like it?
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Do you not like it?
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Is it helpful to you?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: That's really my main thing is is this helpful to you?
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Is it encouraging?
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Does it inspire you in some way?
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: So, hey, God bless.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, you have an awesome uh rest of the day or evening whenever you're listening to this, and I will catch you on the next episode.
