- 0:00Hey y'all, this is friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Happy Friday.
- 0:05We have made it to the end of another week and heading into
- 0:10Memorial Day weekend. I hope y'all are all doing well.
- 0:14We are going to be finishing out second John.
- 0:17I'm reading through verses 9:00 to 11:00 today and there are a
- 0:21few more verses after verse 11 that I'm not going to read over
- 0:24us. It's basically just John closing
- 0:27out his letter. But this passage, the verses
- 0:31that we're in really challenged me because it talks about
- 0:36remaining faithful to Christ, how we abide in truth and do not
- 0:41drift from relationship with God.
- 0:44I honestly think one of the biggest temptations in today's
- 0:48culture is self-reliance because the world constantly tells us to
- 0:54trust ourselves, to move faster, figure everything out on our
- 0:59own, when really the Kingdom of God teaches dependence.
- 1:04It teaches surrender and how we are to abide in Christ.
- 1:09So I want to talk about today what it means to remain in
- 1:13Christ rather than slowly drifting into independence from
- 1:19Him. Let's go ahead and read the
- 1:21verses. Anyone who wanders away and does
- 1:25not remain faithful to the teaching of Christ has no
- 1:29relationship with God. But those who remain in the
- 1:33teaching of Christ have a wonderful relationship with both
- 1:37the Father and the Son. So if anyone comes into your
- 1:42fellowship claiming to be a true believer yet doesn't bring this
- 1:46teaching, you are not to consider Him as a fellow
- 1:49believer, nor should you welcome him into your homes.
- 1:54For if you welcome him as a believer, you will be partnering
- 1:58with him and his evil agenda. OK, very direct and straight to
- 2:05the point. But one phrase that jumped out
- 2:08to me was remain faithful, because drifting from God does
- 2:14not typically happen all at once.
- 2:18Sometimes it just looks like depending on yourself more than
- 2:22depending on Him. Maybe it looks like making
- 2:26decisions without praying first, trying to force outcomes one in
- 2:32control rather than surrendering to His will.
- 2:37And our world oftentimes rewards those mindsets.
- 2:41But Christianity was not meant to be lived independently from
- 2:46Christ. Jesus says in John 15 verse 4,
- 2:50abide in me and I in you. Abiding means remaining, staying
- 2:57connected, continuing with Him daily, not just believing in
- 3:03Jesus once, but walking with Jesus consistently.
- 3:07And then we see in John 8 verse 31 to 32, Jesus says, if you
- 3:13abide in my Word, you are truly my disciples and you will know
- 3:18the truth and the truth will set you free.
- 3:22So here's the thing, freedom is connected to abiding, not just
- 3:27an occasional connection, not just knowing about God or
- 3:32listening to sermons and the word preached occasionally
- 3:37actually remaining close to Him. Psalm 119105 This has been a
- 3:44verse that I have really just prayed through this season in my
- 3:48life and meditated on. It says your word is a lamp to
- 3:52my feet and a light to my path. A lamp does not usually show the
- 3:58entire Rd. it simply shows the next step.
- 4:02And I think sometimes we get frustrated because we want
- 4:06clarity for the next 5 year plan, but God is only asking us
- 4:11to trust Him with today, to ask Him for Our Daily Bread and
- 4:17trust that He is going to nourish us and give us exactly
- 4:20what we need. Waiting on God can feel
- 4:24uncomfortable because our flesh wants immediate movement,
- 4:29immediate answers. But hear this, waiting on God is
- 4:35not weakness, Isaiah 40 verse 31 says, but those who wait on the
- 4:41Lord shall renew their strength. So not those who rush ahead, not
- 4:47people who force every door open for themselves or rely on their
- 4:52own understanding, those who wait on the Lord because
- 4:57dependence on God is not passive.
- 5:01It's actually an active trust. I believe sometimes the most
- 5:07spiritual thing that you can do is pause and just ask God, Are
- 5:14you actually leading me here? Is your presence going before me
- 5:18in this place? Is this what you have for me?
- 5:23I think a lot of us don't intentionally walk away from
- 5:26God. We just slowly stop including
- 5:28Him in everything. Another thing I loved in this
- 5:33passage is how it connects abiding with relationship.
- 5:38It says those who remain in the teaching of Christ have a
- 5:42wonderful relationship with the Father and the Son.
- 5:46Sometimes people reduce salvation to just getting to
- 5:50heaven someday, but heaven, our salvation is the result.
- 5:56But Jesus is the point. He is the point of our lives.
- 6:00Eternal life is relationship with Him right now.
- 6:05John 17 verse 3 says eternal life means to know and
- 6:10experience you as the only true God and to know and experience
- 6:15Jesus Christ. Notice it does not just say know
- 6:19about Him, but to know Him personally.
- 6:24When you remember what Jesus saved you from and what He has
- 6:28brought you into, it truly transforms the way you live.
- 6:34His grace does not make us casual about our sin.
- 6:39His grace draws us near to God. A real relationship with God is
- 6:45going to come with conviction. The Holy Spirit does not just
- 6:50comfort us, He transforms us. Titus 2 verses 11 to 12 tells us
- 6:57that the grace of God teaches us to say no to ungodliness.
- 7:03And the closer that you walk with God, the more you abide in
- 7:07Jesus. Because Jesus is God, the more
- 7:10you begin desiring what honors God.
- 7:14It's not out of a religious performance or obligation, but
- 7:19it's out of love. And then John kind of shifts
- 7:24into talking about false teaching.
- 7:27And I think this matters so much today because we live in a world
- 7:31where a lot of people have platforms and not every voice is
- 7:37truly reflecting the teaching of Jesus.
- 7:41You can be around Christian language yet still drift from
- 7:44Christ himself. That is why discernment is
- 7:48crucial. Deception becomes easier when we
- 7:53stop abiding closely with Jesus ourselves.
- 7:56One thing that's important to understand is that hospitality
- 8:00was a huge part of the early church, and this was something
- 8:04that I was really looking into as I was reading through these
- 8:08verses. Traveling believers and teachers
- 8:11would constantly stay in people's homes and be supported
- 8:16by other families. So when John is making an
- 8:20emphasis and warning them to not welcome false teachers, it's
- 8:25because hospitality was such a normal expression of Christian
- 8:29love and fellowship. And frankly, reading this kind
- 8:34of convicted me because I think hospitality is kind of a lost
- 8:39thing in today's world. Everything feels so fast-paced
- 8:44and centered on self, from our busy schedules to our own
- 8:49comfort and our own space. But Romans 12 verse 13 says
- 8:54share with the Lord's people who are in need.
- 8:57Practice hospitality. Hospitality does not always have
- 9:02to be something super major and huge.
- 9:06Sometimes it looks like just inviting someone in for dinner
- 9:10or maybe reaching out to someone checking in on them.
- 9:13It is making time for people serving instead of always
- 9:18thinking about yourself first. So I think this passage was such
- 9:23a good reminder for me personally that while we should
- 9:26absolutely be discerning spiritually, that is what these
- 9:30verses are really highlighting. We are also still called to love
- 9:35people well and to reflect the heart of Jesus and that looks
- 9:39like inviting people in, being warm and hospitable.
- 9:43Such a big take away for me for these verses.
- 9:46Just to round it all out is do not slowly drift into
- 9:51independence from God while still calling yourself close to
- 9:55Him. Stay connected to Jesus, abide
- 10:00in His Word, be rooted in it. Make time to read His word every
- 10:05single day, even in the moments and days that you may not feel
- 10:10like it or you're super busy. I promise you it will purify and
- 10:15transform your mind and your heart, and it is so worth it.
- 10:20Wait on the Lord. Seek His wisdom.
- 10:25It tells us in James that if any of you are lacking wisdom, ask
- 10:31the Lord because He will give you more wisdom.
- 10:33He desires to do that and stay sensitive to His Spirit's
- 10:38leading. You were never called to carry
- 10:43Christianity in this religious persona and your own strength.
- 10:48The goal was never just to get to heaven someday.
- 10:52The invitation is a relationship with Jesus, and that begins
- 10:56right now where you are. So let's go ahead and move into
- 11:01prayer. Dear Father, thank You for
- 11:07inviting us into union with You, into a real relationship where
- 11:14we can know You personally. Would You forgive us for times
- 11:19that we have relied more on ourselves than on You?
- 11:24Would you teach us to remain close to You, make us more
- 11:28sensitive to Your Spirit? Keep us anchored in your word of
- 11:32truth. Sanctify us by your Word, Lord,
- 11:36Your word is truth. Would you help us to wait on You
- 11:40instead of just rushing ahead to what is next to what our flesh
- 11:45is craving? I pray that we would live
- 11:49governed by the Spirit. Would you grow and increase our
- 11:53discernment? Give us a deeper intimacy with
- 11:57You in our lives. Would you aid us in loving
- 12:01others so well? God, show us how to serve others
- 12:06faithfully. Give us creative ways to do
- 12:09that. And may we reflect your heart in
- 12:12all areas of our lives. May we honor you with our
- 12:16speech, with our conduct, in our faith, in our love, in our
- 12:20purity. May others see the love of
- 12:23Christ through us. We ask these things in your
- 12:27name. Jesus.
- 12:28Amen. OK guys, that is Friday's
- 12:31episode. I hope you'll have a great
- 12:34Memorial Day weekend and I look forward to being with y'all on
- 12:38the next podcast.
