- 0:25Speaker 2: Have you decided who will Saturday night? Still talking to
- 0:29Speaker 2: you that? Yeah, Zach wy today is sar It could
- 0:34Speaker 2: be Yeah, we'll work through that. Both those guys are
- 0:36Speaker 2: playing some good ball.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Kellen Moore asked what quarterback was going to start preseason
- 0:42Speaker 1: game number two? Noncommittal. There see if Scott Shanley has
- 0:46Speaker 1: an idea former Saint linebacker, Super Bowl champion good enough
- 0:49Speaker 1: to spend a couple of minutes with us here. Hey Scott,
- 0:50Speaker 1: thanks as always, man, How are you? Hey?
- 0:52Speaker 2: I'm doing good?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Thought? Who you'd like to see start preseason game number two? Quarterback?
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think you know, for the first game, I think
- 1:02Speaker 2: you gotta go with Zach Wilson. I think he looked
- 1:04Speaker 2: the most consistent, the most the most playmaking. And I
- 1:09Speaker 2: think you know, with only three preseason games, usually the
- 1:13Speaker 2: guys who are gonna make the roster don't usually play
- 1:15Speaker 2: much in the third game. I think you gave Spencer
- 1:17Speaker 2: the first start. I think you give Zach this start.
- 1:20Speaker 2: You gotta you know, I think when you look at
- 1:22Speaker 2: the quarterback situation, this happened with the Raiders when they're
- 1:25Speaker 2: trying to look at Mendoza the first preseason game, he's
- 1:27Speaker 2: playing with the two. So you want to see these
- 1:29Speaker 2: guys play with you know, the twos and threes and
- 1:31Speaker 2: see how they respond. But I think Zach's probably earned
- 1:34Speaker 2: the right to start this game.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Does it really? I hate to say, like does it matter?
- 1:39Speaker 1: I mean think everything matters to a degree, But how
- 1:41Speaker 1: much does it matter who starts a quarterback or relative
- 1:45Speaker 1: to whatever how many reps they get in the game.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Well, I think you know this day and age, I
- 1:52Speaker 2: think it does matter. With the backup quarterback position, you
- 1:55Speaker 2: see a lot of these guys. You see a lot
- 1:56Speaker 2: of teams every off season when free agencies right, these
- 1:59Speaker 2: teams are fighting and pay a lot of money to
- 2:01Speaker 2: back up quarterbacks because you, as your starting quarterback. You
- 2:04Speaker 2: have to have a guy who can come in and
- 2:06Speaker 2: just manage the ship, manage the game is at minimum
- 2:09Speaker 2: what you want from your backup quarterback. And I think
- 2:11Speaker 2: the reason I've kind of I feel like the organization
- 2:14Speaker 2: is trending more towards Zach being the backup right now
- 2:17Speaker 2: after that first preseason game is because it's no slag
- 2:20Speaker 2: in Spencer. Spencer's had a lot of opportunities to play.
- 2:22Speaker 2: He's had a lot of starts for being a fifth
- 2:24Speaker 2: round pick so far, but you never really you never
- 2:27Speaker 2: really see those highs that you want to see out
- 2:30Speaker 2: the starting caliber or even a good backup quarterback. I
- 2:33Speaker 2: think he just kind of he's midline and then he
- 2:35Speaker 2: makes a mistake. He's midline, he makes a mistake. So
- 2:37Speaker 2: I think this organization really is trying to find a
- 2:40Speaker 2: service Lettle backup behind Shucks Scott.
- 2:43Speaker 1: What is a veteran's mindset going into the second preseason game.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I suppose it's different based on where your set is
- 2:50Speaker 1: on the roster. But for the guys that are they're
- 2:53Speaker 1: going that are expected to play against the Rams, where
- 2:56Speaker 1: are they with you know, with two preseason games to go?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you used to be four preseason games, and it
- 3:03Speaker 2: was kind of, you know, all the starters. Game two
- 3:06Speaker 2: was always kind of the dress rehearsal for the season,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and then by the time you got to the fourth
- 3:11Speaker 2: preseason game, it was really just all the backups, guys
- 3:13Speaker 2: trying to make a roster and putting out film for
- 3:15Speaker 2: other teams across the league, or trying to make practice squad.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So I think the way camp is now, you get
- 3:20Speaker 2: that first preseason game, maybe a lot of teams in
- 3:23Speaker 2: the second preseason game will play some more starters, but
- 3:25Speaker 2: about a third preseason game anymore, nobody's playing these starters.
- 3:28Speaker 2: So if you have the limited opportunities and these preseason
- 3:31Speaker 2: games anymore, they're not for you know, I don't even
- 3:36Speaker 2: know guys knock rust off anymore, but how much how
- 3:38Speaker 2: little they play if you're a starter. These games are
- 3:41Speaker 2: really for guys trying to find a way to make
- 3:42Speaker 2: the roster, show a team that they can be a
- 3:44Speaker 2: solid backup on their team, or if you have position battles.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think the other thing you use one or two
- 3:49Speaker 2: preseason games for is position battles because you got to
- 3:51Speaker 2: get looks at guys outside of practice and see who
- 3:54Speaker 2: some guys are just gamers. Some guys play better when
- 3:56Speaker 2: the lights are on, so you got to find that
- 3:57Speaker 2: out as well.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Did you like playing preseason games?
- 4:03Speaker 2: I think a couple preseason games is fine because, like
- 4:06Speaker 2: I said, you knock some of that rush off as
- 4:08Speaker 2: a veteran player and you get ready, But the speed
- 4:10Speaker 2: of the game is not what it is during the
- 4:12Speaker 2: regular season game. You're trying to get yourself in that
- 4:16Speaker 2: mindset of playing a regular season game, But it beats
- 4:20Speaker 2: practicing against each other for a month. Even these interest
- 4:22Speaker 2: squad practices that are almost like preseason games that a
- 4:24Speaker 2: lot of fans just don't get to see unless they
- 4:26Speaker 2: actually go attend. So I think you need some of it.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit of address rehearsal for
- 4:30Speaker 2: the real thing.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Former Sat linebacker Scott Shanley get enough to spend a
- 4:34Speaker 1: couple of minutes with us here on the show. You
- 4:37Speaker 1: mentioned position battles, any position battles in particular. You're interested
- 4:42Speaker 1: in keeping an eye on Saturday.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think when you look at really on this team,
- 4:49Speaker 2: the injury bug has bitten lately. So there's gonna be
- 4:52Speaker 2: guys George Tyson going down, Camara going out there are
- 4:54Speaker 2: gonna be guys who make the team as a running
- 4:57Speaker 2: back or a wide receiver, at least for the first
- 4:59Speaker 2: month of the season. These guys get healthy, so guys
- 5:01Speaker 2: are playing for roster spots. But I think to me,
- 5:05Speaker 2: probably maybe a little bit biased of being a linebacker.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I'm kind of watching the Pete Warner Danny Stutsman. Do
- 5:10Speaker 2: you know how they utilize these linebackers any time we
- 5:12Speaker 2: lose a guy like Tomorrow Davis, and you bring Peyton Elsack,
- 5:16Speaker 2: and I think I was a great thing. I think
- 5:17Speaker 2: is one of the most underrated times of the off
- 5:18Speaker 2: season because he's the guy who grew up in the
- 5:20Speaker 2: organization and knows exactly what the organization expects. I think
- 5:23Speaker 2: it will be a seamless transition for him to step
- 5:26Speaker 2: in for Tomorrow. And I think just finding out the
- 5:29Speaker 2: rotation they're going to use at these inside linebacker spots,
- 5:32Speaker 2: to me is kind of one of the intriguing things
- 5:34Speaker 2: I've been watching throughout the preseason.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You know, Scott, I'm trying not to overreact to the injuries,
- 5:40Speaker 1: but I'm admittedly completely overreacting to the injuries. Where where
- 5:45Speaker 1: do you see all these guys going down unfortunately, Brazi
- 5:48Speaker 1: for the season, Dylan Raiden's for the season, Tyson for
- 5:51Speaker 1: two months, Kamara for a month. What do you think
- 5:54Speaker 1: when you see all these injuries in camp?
- 5:57Speaker 2: Well, I think it's a combination and I think can
- 6:00Speaker 2: you ask old guys you know what it is. I
- 6:03Speaker 2: don't think the players. The players are getting bigger, faster, stronger.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I do think that, but I also think there's something too.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Not having the OTAs and the offseason practices as many
- 6:14Speaker 2: as we have and then having a real training camp.
- 6:16Speaker 2: There's a there's an acclamation period to these guys' bodies.
- 6:18Speaker 2: They have to hit, they have to get after each other,
- 6:21Speaker 2: they have to lean on each other, and a lot
- 6:23Speaker 2: of these teams just because of the way the CBA
- 6:25Speaker 2: has been negotiated, there's not a whole lot of contact
- 6:28Speaker 2: going on anymore. And guys when they get into you
- 6:31Speaker 2: look at all these injuries. Most these injuries are happening
- 6:33Speaker 2: when they get out of their comfort zone and you
- 6:35Speaker 2: can't brother in law against your own teammate. They're going
- 6:38Speaker 2: on intersquads practices. Now you have to amput up because
- 6:41Speaker 2: nobody wants look bad. Or you go to preseason games
- 6:43Speaker 2: where you're playing at game speed, and that's where all
- 6:45Speaker 2: these injuries are happening. I just think the players' bodies
- 6:48Speaker 2: are not getting acclimated enough to gain speed and the
- 6:52Speaker 2: physicality of the game before those plays happen. And it's frustrating.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It really is.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Former State linebacker Scott sham is with us. We talked
- 7:02Speaker 1: about some of the position battles. There is there anything else, Scott,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and we understand. I know you played in air. With
- 7:08Speaker 1: four preseason games, there's three short at the halfway point.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Is there anything else aside from like just a position
- 7:13Speaker 1: battle that you think is worth worth the listener keeping
- 7:15Speaker 1: an eye on when the watch the game tomorrow.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Well, I think we've probably hit the most intriguing parts
- 7:21Speaker 2: of this team, most of the roster spots, the starting
- 7:24Speaker 2: spots on this team. I think most Saints fans can
- 7:27Speaker 2: can kind of pencil in who they believe are going
- 7:29Speaker 2: to be the starter. So I think when you look
- 7:30Speaker 2: at the backup quarterback position is still playing out. I
- 7:34Speaker 2: think this game. After this game, they'll probably have an
- 7:36Speaker 2: idea of exactly who they're penciling at number two, the
- 7:39Speaker 2: inside lineback position with Warner and Stutsman. How that's going
- 7:42Speaker 2: to play out. Who's how that rotation is going to
- 7:44Speaker 2: work again? And then you just want to continue to
- 7:46Speaker 2: see a young secondary. Last year, young secondary continue to
- 7:50Speaker 2: emerge and those young guys continue to make plays because
- 7:53Speaker 2: to me, you look at the back half of last year,
- 7:55Speaker 2: Shock was obviously the storyline, came in, made some great plays,
- 7:58Speaker 2: played confident. The defense plays as good as any team
- 8:01Speaker 2: in the league after the Carolina game, So can the
- 8:03Speaker 2: defense continue to kind of carry that torch and help
- 8:07Speaker 2: this offense get acclimated because a lot of those injuries
- 8:09Speaker 2: besides Breezy, which is a huge loss, are happening on
- 8:12Speaker 2: the offensive side of the ball, So the defense is
- 8:14Speaker 2: always ahead of the offense. So you need this defense
- 8:17Speaker 2: to be ahead of the offense by the time Game
- 8:18Speaker 2: one rold round because there's two tough games out the gate.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Yeah, last thing for you, scott yoursef very much appreciated.
- 8:24Speaker 1: If I asked you right now at this point in camp,
- 8:27Speaker 1: you know, another week of the preseason after Saturday, what's
- 8:31Speaker 1: the biggest concern on this team? What would you say.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Biggest concern is I just think there's a lot of
- 8:41Speaker 2: there's a lot of great pieces and I think the
- 8:43Speaker 2: Saints are kind of the storyline when you look at
- 8:45Speaker 2: the naw media. Everybody expects this team to compete for
- 8:48Speaker 2: the NFC stuff based on the way they finished last year.
- 8:51Speaker 2: To me is, how do you play now that there's
- 8:54Speaker 2: expectations back I think there's expectations back on Shock. Can
- 8:57Speaker 2: you be the same player and better than you were
- 8:59Speaker 2: at the end last year? Chase Young? Can you stay
- 9:02Speaker 2: healthy and continue to be that defensive player that a
- 9:05Speaker 2: lot of people think can be the NFL Defensive Player
- 9:08Speaker 2: of the Year type candidate. It's about staying hungry, and
- 9:10Speaker 2: I think it's been a while since then since the
- 9:13Speaker 2: national media and the national landscape has been hyped up
- 9:15Speaker 2: about what the New Orleans SATs football team can bring in.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Can you keep that chip on your shoulder because you
- 9:20Speaker 2: haven't wont anything yet and you may not start the
- 9:22Speaker 2: season too and you start with two tough games. So
- 9:25Speaker 2: can you stay hungry and stay motivated when everybody's telling
- 9:28Speaker 2: you it's your time to shine?
- 9:30Speaker 1: He is Scott Shanley, former Saint linebacker, going to spend
- 9:32Speaker 1: a couple of minutes with us here. Scott, We always
- 9:34Speaker 1: appreciate the time and thank you. Yep.
- 9:36Speaker 2: No problem,
