Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett here at One.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Leg Up Alex Media. Of course we're going to get
- 0:08Speaker 2: to the loss of John Sterling at One Leg Up
- 0:12Speaker 2: Alex Sports. But I need time to process that because
- 0:16Speaker 2: there's a lot of thoughts, there's a lot of feelings,
- 0:17Speaker 2: there's a lot of emotions to it, and I'm not
- 0:19Speaker 2: ready to address that. So I want to begin part
- 0:24Speaker 2: one of a series on redistricting, and I'll start with
- 0:28Speaker 2: the shake it Off sound by of the week. We
- 0:30Speaker 2: actually talk about redistricting last night in our second hour
- 0:34Speaker 2: and here as you know, redistricting thing has been in
- 0:38Speaker 2: the news. So here's what Lucas, MRT and I talked
- 0:41Speaker 2: about on Shake it Off with Mertin Lucas for May third,
- 0:45Speaker 2: twenty twenty six.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Guest, ladies and gentlemen. It's redistricting season. It's a time
- 0:50Speaker 1: when both parties pretend to be shocked, shocked, shocked that
- 0:54Speaker 1: the other side is trying to rig the political geometry.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And this year the stakes are higher, the shapes are weirder,
- 1:02Speaker 1: and the quotes are juicier. This isn't a story, It's
- 1:06Speaker 1: a continental breakfast of political absurdity. Got any thoughts about this?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Ridiculous redistricting battle murder.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yes, it's a magic trick. You see the black vote,
- 1:17Speaker 3: Now you don't, it's this where to go? Where'd the
- 1:19Speaker 3: black vote go? No?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. But the fact the black vote does
- 1:25Speaker 1: not disappear, that's a bit of a exageration.
- 1:28Speaker 3: You're funny for saying that that's exactly what's going to happen.
- 1:31Speaker 3: But I understand it. This is what you're supposed to
- 1:34Speaker 3: do because there's no way that a lot of these
- 1:36Speaker 3: conservatives see that they can win the minority vote. So
- 1:40Speaker 3: it's smart to try to redraw the lines because it's
- 1:43Speaker 3: allowed by law, especially now, so I don't have a
- 1:48Speaker 3: problem with it. This is on other communities who have
- 1:51Speaker 3: a problem with the political process to get involved to
- 1:55Speaker 3: prevent this stuff from happening. When people are smart and
- 1:59Speaker 3: they use the government to do their bidding, you cannot
- 2:03Speaker 3: be mad because it's all equal access. Now. I know
- 2:06Speaker 3: that's not technically true, but in reality it is true.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Everybody can participate. There's a lot of people out there
- 2:14Speaker 3: who are choosing not to. And now they're waking up
- 2:17Speaker 3: today and they're upset and they're mad, and they're saying, well,
- 2:21Speaker 3: how could they do this. Well, if you go to school,
- 2:24Speaker 3: a basic high school class will teach you all this stuff. Now,
- 2:27Speaker 3: I didn't pass that class with an APE. I might
- 2:30Speaker 3: have got a C. I might've got a Z or.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Be in that class. Well C is passing.
- 2:34Speaker 3: No, Yeah, but it's like it's like if you're smart,
- 2:38Speaker 3: that's not a real good grade. But if you were
- 2:41Speaker 3: in any kind of civics high school class talks about history,
- 2:45Speaker 3: you would understand how some of this stuff works. And
- 2:48Speaker 3: all it takes is us participating and they can't take
- 2:51Speaker 3: your little rights away. But if you don't participate, all
- 2:55Speaker 3: of a sudden, the map is going to look like
- 2:58Speaker 3: a plate of spaghetti because it's going to be one
- 3:00Speaker 3: thing over here, one thing over there, and all of
- 3:03Speaker 3: a sudden, they're going to have all these seats and
- 3:05Speaker 3: there's nothing you can do about it because they use
- 3:08Speaker 3: the law. So you can get mad at Republicans for
- 3:11Speaker 3: using the law when you have the same opportunity.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Well, the Democrats are using the law too. You see
- 3:17Speaker 1: what they did in California. They redrew everything over there too. Now,
- 3:21Speaker 1: but here's the interesting part. Well, while politicians fight over
- 3:24Speaker 1: these maps like they're the last slights of pizza at
- 3:28Speaker 1: a campaign fundraiser. Voters across the country hate the whole process.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Not dislike Mert, they hate it, and we've got the
- 3:38Speaker 1: numbers to prove it. Ready. A major national survey by
- 3:41Speaker 1: Common Cause and Noble Predictive Insights to one of the
- 3:45Speaker 1: largest redistricting polls in the country found something remarkable. Americans
- 3:52Speaker 1: by and large hate partisan map, drawing seventy seven percent
- 3:58Speaker 1: of Americans we're independent redistricting not political. That includes, by
- 4:06Speaker 1: the way, Mert, seventy six percent of Democrats, fifty seven
- 4:10Speaker 1: percent of Republicans, and seventy two percent of independence. Even
- 4:16Speaker 1: sixty percent of Trumpet voters in twenty twenty four oppose
- 4:21Speaker 1: these mid decade redistricting moves. So this has to be
- 4:27Speaker 1: viewed as a miracle to see these kind of numbers.
- 4:31Speaker 1: They're expressing distaste for the games that politicians are playing
- 4:36Speaker 1: right before our very eyes.
- 4:38Speaker 3: You know, sometimes, you know, sometimes I hear about you.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I mean, I hear you talk about these polls, and
- 4:44Speaker 3: sometimes I wish on these polls they could have an
- 4:46Speaker 3: option that said, I don't know what this poll is
- 4:49Speaker 3: talking about, because I really think that sometimes with these.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Polls, you don't believe polls either.
- 4:56Speaker 3: No, no, no, I'm saying that some of these polls
- 5:00Speaker 3: they might not have too many options, so they just
- 5:03Speaker 3: picked something to sound like they're smart, and they don't
- 5:06Speaker 3: really know what their pitch.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Right, So with the studio audience, calm down, studio audiences.
- 5:11Speaker 3: So with these polls, you know, I think people are
- 5:14Speaker 3: saying they're upset. Well, I don't really think they're paying
- 5:18Speaker 3: attention because this stuff is taking place, and then when
- 5:21Speaker 3: everybody translates it into English where everybody can understand it,
- 5:27Speaker 3: now they want to get upset. But I think if
- 5:29Speaker 3: you were paying attention, you would have already known this.
- 5:33Speaker 3: You wouldn't be blindsided. You know, they don't do things
- 5:38Speaker 3: in the dark. You could see this coming from a
- 5:40Speaker 3: mile away. What was they doing with tech? What was
- 5:43Speaker 3: the origin of all this nonsense? What state were they
- 5:47Speaker 3: redrawing stuff? Was it text?
- 5:49Speaker 2: You know, you're in New York. They tried to but
- 5:50Speaker 2: the judges stopped them here in New York.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I get what you're saying, Martin. I think it
- 5:55Speaker 1: was Trump was trying to instigate it, and this is
- 5:57Speaker 1: sort of backfiring a little bit. But look, there's another poll.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I know you love polls, so let me throw this in.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Another poll from Reuters, I found that fifty five percent
- 6:10Speaker 1: of Americans say partisan registricting is bad for democracy, and
- 6:18Speaker 1: only eighteen percent say it isn't SOT. When fifty five
- 6:25Speaker 1: percent of Americans agree on anything, okay, that's significant. But
- 6:32Speaker 1: then you've got politicians like Newsom out in California who
- 6:36Speaker 1: shamelessly ignores the will of the American people. Americans are saying,
- 6:41Speaker 1: hands off, but the politicians are way too hands on.
- 6:47Speaker 1: You see any audience agres they should be ashamed, they
- 6:51Speaker 1: should be ashamed of themselves. And you seem to think
- 6:54Speaker 1: it's okay, Come on, Mert.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Well, it's all okay because it's the laws that we
- 6:59Speaker 3: put on the books. I mean, that's the system we
- 7:01Speaker 3: got to operate by. Something. You're a lawyer, you should
- 7:03Speaker 3: know this better than But.
- 7:05Speaker 1: What about the will of the people. The will of
- 7:07Speaker 1: the people's and don't play games with the maps. Well
- 7:11Speaker 1: you put the numbers. You just heard the numbers. You're
- 7:14Speaker 1: ignoring the numbers just like there, just like the politicians
- 7:18Speaker 1: are ignoring the law. How's that for interesting, Alex, do you.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Notice Well, hold on a second, I'm not about to
- 7:23Speaker 3: let you try to manipulate me and put me in
- 7:25Speaker 3: a chicken or the egg situation? Which one came Which
- 7:28Speaker 3: one came first?
- 7:29Speaker 1: Talking about chickens or eggs? Right on that where DIRIZI coming.
- 7:32Speaker 3: From with this situation. We know which one came first.
- 7:35Speaker 3: The laws came first, so the people supported the law.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Now if they don't like the law, the people should
- 7:41Speaker 3: do something to rewrite it or to change it. But
- 7:45Speaker 3: they're not doing that. So the Republicans have done something
- 7:49Speaker 3: because they want the law to go further and they
- 7:51Speaker 3: want to be able to do it with more freedom.
- 7:55Speaker 3: So when you try to put a chicken or the egg, well,
- 7:59Speaker 3: the people have a right to be upset.
- 8:01Speaker 1: No.
- 8:01Speaker 3: No, the people decided on a system, and now they're
- 8:05Speaker 3: getting upset because they don't like the system anymore.
- 8:07Speaker 1: No, because the system is being abused murder. It's the opposite.
- 8:11Speaker 1: They're saying, hands off on the maps. Okay, you're misinterpreting
- 8:15Speaker 1: what the people what the people are saying, which is
- 8:18Speaker 1: common for you. You don't like dealing with the facts.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You like going off in some rabbit hole. Has doctor
- 8:24Speaker 1: Vermoniu apptly diagnosed you, mister rabbit hole?
- 8:27Speaker 3: So I think you're a part of this group of
- 8:29Speaker 3: the people, then, who don't understand that you have a
- 8:33Speaker 3: responsibility to participate. I don't want to hear you complain
- 8:37Speaker 3: when things aren't going your way, when you're sitting on
- 8:40Speaker 3: the sidelines. Doom scrolling. If we want to bring up
- 8:43Speaker 3: the doctor, that was one of her favorite terms, doom
- 8:45Speaker 3: scrolling and YouTube and looking at nonsense all day. Get
- 8:50Speaker 3: out there and participate, and they won't be able to
- 8:52Speaker 3: readraw lines and upset the likes of mister Ferarra who
- 8:57Speaker 3: sits in his ivory tower with his millions of dollars.
- 9:00Speaker 3: They wouldn't be able to do this type of stuff.
- 9:04Speaker 1: He's attacked. It's disparaging me, and he's attacking me. So
- 9:08Speaker 1: a you're gonna just sit there and allow him?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Are you kidding me?
- 9:11Speaker 3: I love this back and play play your little sound
- 9:13Speaker 3: effects to help him.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I don't know. Look in Virginia, the voters approved reperend
- 9:19Speaker 1: him to change how districts were drawn. They said yes
- 9:22Speaker 1: with enthusiasm. Then a judge stepped in and said the
- 9:26Speaker 1: ballot language was and this is a quote flagrantly misleading.
- 9:30Speaker 1: That's a judge Jack Hurley, who apparently believes that voters
- 9:33Speaker 1: of Virginia are wandering around in a flaw, in a fog.
- 9:37Speaker 1: The state's Attorney General, Jay Jones, was on amused. He
- 9:40Speaker 1: fired back, Virginia voters have spoken, and an activist judge
- 9:45Speaker 1: should not have veto power over the people's vote. But
- 9:50Speaker 1: then the National Republican Committee chair Joe Grudders jumped in
- 9:54Speaker 1: and accused Democrats of playton power grab, which is adorable
- 9:59Speaker 1: because accusing the other party of a barograb during redistricting
- 10:03Speaker 1: is like accusing a shark of being too enthusiastic about swimming.
- 10:07Speaker 1: This whole thing is a big mess. Merder So, this
- 10:12Speaker 1: has got to stop. It's just causing confusion, and it's
- 10:16Speaker 1: causing anger, and this rhetoric and this divisiveness is leading
- 10:20Speaker 1: to a lot of violence.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And political At least they voted on this and then
- 10:27Speaker 2: just blindside the people.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Right, that's right, that's right. But it's still going down
- 10:31Speaker 1: the rabbit hole, so to speak. To borrow a merd term,
- 10:34Speaker 1: because it's mired and litigation and people fighting there. You know, Texas,
- 10:38Speaker 1: we're seeing the same thing in North Carolina, Ohio. Look,
- 10:43Speaker 1: people are defined, they're defying the will of the people.
- 10:47Speaker 1: California shameful. Okay, So this is this germandering stuff, you know,
- 10:53Speaker 1: had nothing to do with California. Knewsom was doing it
- 10:56Speaker 1: because of what was happening elsewhere in the country. That's
- 10:59Speaker 1: a new strategy. If you Jerry mander, will Jerry Mander back.
- 11:03Speaker 1: This is mutually assured reakdistricting people. That's awful. And listen,
- 11:11Speaker 1: seem to be okay. You seem to be okay with it.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Listen, I don't need you to try to speak for
- 11:17Speaker 3: me because I don't. I didn't hire you. You know,
- 11:19Speaker 3: that's out of my price range. So I don't want
- 11:21Speaker 3: you trying to defend me. I'm gonna say this. I'm
- 11:25Speaker 3: gonna say this, and your little sound effects they can
- 11:28Speaker 3: go away too. I'm gonna say that they're perfect.
- 11:31Speaker 1: They're perfect, Alex, keep them coming.
- 11:33Speaker 3: This whole fiasco comes down to this. I'm gonna simplify
- 11:37Speaker 3: it because Lucas uses a whole bunch of big words
- 11:39Speaker 3: and a whole lot of fancy sentences. They don't want
- 11:42Speaker 3: to lose control. We know who we're talking about, the Republicans.
- 11:47Speaker 3: When you try to bring up Gavin Newsom, that's just
- 11:50Speaker 3: a deflection tactic. And it's not gonna work here because
- 11:53Speaker 3: this is all about Republicans trying to keep their little
- 11:57Speaker 3: edge that they think they have, but they're gonna lose
- 11:59Speaker 3: it because they're so unpopular. It's gonna happen one way
- 12:02Speaker 3: or another. See all these redistricting efforts. It's my theory.
- 12:08Speaker 3: I could be proven wrong at the end of the day.
- 12:10Speaker 3: It's still not gonna work because I already see the
- 12:13Speaker 3: wheels turning in people heads. We've seen it last week
- 12:16Speaker 3: when you were critical of Trump, both of you, both
- 12:18Speaker 3: you and Alex were critical of Trump. The tides are
- 12:21Speaker 3: turning in this country. You can redraw the maps today,
- 12:26Speaker 3: but guess what happens. It's written in pencil, So the
- 12:30Speaker 3: Democrats they're just going to come back and redraw all
- 12:33Speaker 3: of it, and then Republicans who are fighting for this now,
- 12:36Speaker 3: they're going to be so upset they're gonna be crying.
- 12:39Speaker 3: How could they do this? The stuff you claim that
- 12:42Speaker 3: people are doing now is going to be ten times
- 12:44Speaker 3: worse when Democrats really start to redraw some stuff once
- 12:50Speaker 3: they get back in office and get back in power.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Because the way things are going in this country right now,
- 12:57Speaker 3: all this talk about Jerry mandering is just a smoke screen,
- 13:01Speaker 3: it's smoking mirrors. It's a bunch of bs, because I
- 13:05Speaker 3: know what's going on the Republicans, and the Republicans are desperate.
- 13:09Speaker 3: They see that MAGA is falling, It's on its last legs,
- 13:14Speaker 3: and this is one of the last opportunities for traditional
- 13:18Speaker 3: Republicans who aren't MAGA but have been bowing and you know,
- 13:24Speaker 3: riding the gravy train. They're trying to figure out a
- 13:27Speaker 3: way how can we keep some sembilus of what we
- 13:31Speaker 3: used to have before Trump. I know how we can
- 13:34Speaker 3: do it. List we draw the maps. But it's not
- 13:37Speaker 3: gonna work. I've seen it. I've seen you and Alex
- 13:41Speaker 3: turn on MAGA. It's gonna be a bludsheedle.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You're gonna let him? Are you gonna let him speak
- 13:49Speaker 1: for you like that? We did not turn on MAGA.
- 13:51Speaker 1: We just took and I.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Don't think we always be Trump. I think we just
- 13:54Speaker 2: hold them accountable when we need to.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just we were just criticizing one particular aspect
- 14:00Speaker 1: of policy.
- 14:01Speaker 2: But the fact that the and I think the Democrats
- 14:03Speaker 2: do more, the fact that they think they can just
- 14:04Speaker 2: draw the lines to include twelve thousand counties. That's the
- 14:07Speaker 2: part that gets me murder is that at least the
- 14:09Speaker 2: Republicans are a little more modest about it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you know why, because the Democrats are desperate,
- 14:15Speaker 1: that's for sure. Now, let's be honest. If Aliens landed
- 14:18Speaker 1: tomorrow and asked how America chooses its leaders, we'd have
- 14:23Speaker 1: to explain. We draw maps, then we argue about the maps.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Then we sue each other over the maps. Then we
- 14:29Speaker 1: we draw the maps again, then we argue over the
- 14:32Speaker 1: new maps, then we sue each other again. Then we
- 14:36Speaker 1: hold election based on whichever map survived the lawsuits, and
- 14:40Speaker 1: then we start over. Murt that's not a system. That's
- 14:43Speaker 1: a hobby, and it's a dysfunctional one at best. If
- 14:47Speaker 1: you want to describe it. And the shapes, some justtrict
- 14:51Speaker 1: look like salamanders. You called it spaghetti. Some look like
- 14:54Speaker 1: broken umbrella umbrellas. Some look like a toddler who tried
- 14:58Speaker 1: to draw a unicorm while writing in the backseat of
- 15:01Speaker 1: a jeep. This whole thing is gross. It's grotesque. It
- 15:05Speaker 1: has to stop. And I'm surprised you're not that you're
- 15:09Speaker 1: not u in protesting over this.
- 15:13Speaker 3: No, because I support it, because I.
- 15:15Speaker 1: See what're indignation.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that's support it because I know what's going to
- 15:19Speaker 3: happen the Republicans there. They feel like this is a
- 15:22Speaker 3: victory right now, but it's going to blow up in
- 15:25Speaker 3: their face and there's gonna have to be a new
- 15:29Speaker 3: era of Republicans who can't be traditional and be anti
- 15:33Speaker 3: this and anti that, and let's go back to how
- 15:36Speaker 3: things used to be. It will be no more make
- 15:38Speaker 3: America great again, which I have no problem with if
- 15:40Speaker 3: you want America to go back to it.
- 15:42Speaker 1: You know what you notice Alex that he's focusing on
- 15:44Speaker 1: the Republicans and it's not saying a word about his
- 15:47Speaker 1: comrades who are turning socialists and returning communists. Notice how
- 15:52Speaker 1: he's quiet about the Democrats who are Demo.
- 15:54Speaker 2: That's why I'm citing that. I'm talking about the Democrats
- 15:56Speaker 2: side because I think if you look at the counties
- 15:59Speaker 2: that the Demo Crawds want a lot of people in
- 16:01Speaker 2: those counties probably are like, no, no, we don't want this.
- 16:05Speaker 2: That's why Lucas is saying there are lawsuits in Virginia
- 16:08Speaker 2: right now as we speak.
- 16:10Speaker 1: The little soul over the country.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I mean to do with this, Alex Listen, I didn't
- 16:15Speaker 3: go to school for jerry mandering and redrawing districts and
- 16:18Speaker 3: all that stuff. So you guys can act like you
- 16:21Speaker 3: are the guys who are masters. I'll let you get away.
- 16:23Speaker 3: You probably know ten times as much as I do.
- 16:26Speaker 3: But I have the real knowledge, the real knowledge. What's
- 16:28Speaker 3: really important is understanding. Anytime you start to invoke the
- 16:33Speaker 3: law to change the law, it's desperation. This is all desperation.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I'm not going to Democrats are certainly desperate, that's for sure.
- 16:42Speaker 3: No, they're retaliating. I heard about the Republicans doing all
- 16:46Speaker 3: this noncess and then the Democrats and retaliation are trying
- 16:50Speaker 3: to camocrafts.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Are disarray because I don't think they know who they
- 16:53Speaker 1: are anymore. Look, America is a nation of three hundred
- 16:57Speaker 1: and thirty million people murdered. We have super comp we
- 17:00Speaker 1: have satellites, we have AI, we have GPS systems that
- 17:03Speaker 1: can tell you the exact location of your AirPod, and
- 17:07Speaker 1: yet we cannot draw a conditional congressional district without triggering
- 17:11Speaker 1: a constitutional crisis. And that, my friends, is the joke.
- 17:15Speaker 1: That's the satire, and that's the strategy. That's the tragedy.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Here and that's why this story matters. Because behind the humor,
- 17:24Speaker 1: behind the absurdity, behind the salamander shaped districts and the
- 17:27Speaker 1: lawsuits and the quotes, is a simple truth. If you
- 17:30Speaker 1: control the map, you control the country. And right now,
- 17:35Speaker 1: both parties are fighting over the pen and we, the
- 17:38Speaker 1: American people, may end up coming out the losers. You
- 17:42Speaker 1: want to know something else we don't have to fight about.
- 17:44Speaker 1: This is episode ninety five of Shake It Off with
- 17:47Speaker 1: Merton Lucas Live. This is Lucas Ferrara with me in
- 17:50Speaker 1: the studio at AM nine seventy located in the heart
- 17:53Speaker 1: of the financial district in downtown Manhattan. Is my co host,
- 17:57Speaker 1: mister rabbit Hole Roberts. He's also affectionately known as the Mardinator,
- 18:01Speaker 1: working the board another other than Alex Garrett. He's got
- 18:04Speaker 1: a five star rated podcast, one Leg Up with Alex Garrett.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Please check it out. And of course we must not
- 18:11Speaker 1: forget Ermin Santos, who is back in Master Control. Thank
