- 0:07The New York Mets faced the San Diego Padres at San Diego Stadium for a Friday night game on May 1st, 1970.
- 0:14The Mets were the defending world champions following their amazing 1969 season.
- 0:19They were managed by Gil Hodges and were sending Tom Seaver to the mound for this game.
- 0:23Seaver was the Cy Young Award winner in 1969 with a 25-7 record and 2.21 ERA.
- 0:30He picked up where he left off in 1970, entering this game with a 4-0 record and 1.74 ERA.
- 0:36The Padres were in their second season, looking to better their 110 loss record in 1969.
- 0:42They were managed by Preston Gomez but had gotten off to a slow start entering the game with a 7-14 record.
- 0:48This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Ralph Keiner, Bob Murphy and Lindsay Nelson.
- 1:48Padding second, the shortstop Steve Hunt. Padding third, in center field, Clarence Gaston.
- 1:55Padding fourth, in left field, Al Polara. Padding fifth, the first baseman Nate Colbert.
- 2:02Padding sixth, in right field, Ollie Brown. Padding seventh, the third baseman Ed Spizio.
- 2:10Padding eighth, then catching Chris Canazero and the pitcher Al Santorini. Padding ninth, the Mets have won 10 and lost 9.
- 2:21Against San Diego, they have won 1 and lost 1 this year. Last year they met 12 times, lost the first game of the 12-game series and then won 11 straight.
- 2:31The Padres so far this year have a record of 7 wins and 14 losses. The umpires for today's game have not come out yet.
- 2:41Behind home plate will be Nick Stelho calling the ball through strikes. Now they do come on the field.
- 2:46At first base, Al Warlick who started his major league career as an umpire in 1940.
- 2:53At second base, Ed Fargo. The umpire at third base, Paul Pryor.
- 3:00Tom Siever warming up down the right field bullpen. No one watching him.
- 3:06He has a record of 4-0 this year and has won his last 14 decisions in the national league.
- 3:11Warming up down the left field line in the bullpen, Al Santorini and there's a crowd around him.
- 3:17I think it'll be just the reverse with Tom's 30th record in the major league.
- 3:21In the ball game tomorrow we'll be on the air at 3.55. It's going to be Jim McAndrew in the mound for the Mets against Clay Kirby.
- 3:31Jim has a record of 1-1. Clay Kirby has a record of 0-2. It was thought that Kirby might miss a turn due to the fact that he at first was believed to have had the measles.
- 3:42But it was diagnosed as a virus and he'll be pitching in that ball game tomorrow afternoon.
- 3:47He'll be on the air both on radio and television tomorrow at 3.55.
- 3:51Sonny's game will be a doubleheader. We'll be on the air at 4 o'clock for that one. Radio and television.
- 3:56Jerry Gentry and Jerry Kuzmin will be the two starting pitches for the Mets. Gentry with a record of 2-0. Jerry Kuzmin has won none and lost two.
- 4:05And Mike Horkas will be pitching for the Padres. He's all three and Taps Tapson also sketching the goal for the Padres. His record at 2-2.
- 4:14Now, Preston Gomez, the manager of the San Diego Padres at home, played with Gil Hodge, the manager of New York Mets, going over the grounds rules.
- 4:22Back far here, symmetrical. 3-30 down each line. 3-70 in right center and left center.
- 4:28And there is no marking in center field, but it is a deep center field.
- 4:33And if memory serves me correctly, it's 420 feet. We'll check that out for you and give you the exact dimensions.
- 4:40We're going to have a good crowd here tonight. It is predicted to be somewhere around a crowd of 20,000.
- 4:49So far this year, the Padres have drawn 73,502 in eight dates here at San Diego Stadium.
- 4:57It is 420 feet to the straightaway center field. High fence guarding the home run area.
- 5:04Fence 17 feet high and you'll see a lot of walls played off that fence.
- 5:10And it makes for some exciting baseball. We'll see the outfielders play the caroms.
- 5:15Try and hold those drives off the wall, the two bases.
- 5:18Still some twilight left here at this stadium.
- 5:22And we're getting set for the first game of a four-game series.
- 5:27A lot of attention focused right now on Tommy Agee. Tommy comes into the ballgame with 11-game hitting streak.
- 5:34Last year he and Cleon Jones hit 11 consecutive ballgames during the season.
- 5:38And Tommy with a chance this ballgame to do even better this year.
- 5:43HUD-Helston has been a hot batter for the match.
- 5:45HUD has hit in 17 of the 19 games he has played and he has played in all the games.
- 5:49He only met the two-so. He has a five-game streak going.
- 5:53And the Mets coming on strongly with their strong run up back in action.
- 5:59Cleon Jones, Joe Foy, and Tommy Agee set out the start of three ballgames and then got back in yesterday as the Mets defeated San Francisco Giants by a score of 4-1.
- 6:12As Nolan Ryan fits another outstanding ballgame.
- 6:15Nolan Ryan now has a record of 2-1 and in the three games that he has been in this year he has given up one hit, two hits, and three hits.
- 6:24And checking the records back on Tom Siever the last time he faced the Padres he did something no other pitcher in the history of baseball has ever done.
- 6:31He struck out 10 consecutive batters. He struck out his last 10 batters in that ballgame as he fished a brilliant game striking out a total of 19.
- 6:42And he became the only pitcher in the history of baseball to strike out 19 batters in a day ballgame.
- 6:48Steve Croson struck out 19 against the Mets in 1969 to set an all-time record for strikeouts in a nine-inny ballgame but that was done at night and now Tom Siever has tied that record.
- 6:59And he also has set one by doing it in the daytime. He erased some pretty good names out of the record book.
- 7:06Names like Sandy Kovacs, Bob Feller.
- 7:13So Tom Siever who is bidding along now with 14 consecutive decisions in the national league having picked up 10 last year his last 10 victories and four so far this year.
- 7:27Record for consecutive game victories over a period of two seasons held by Carl Hubbell at 24 so Tom is not fronting too much of that record.
- 7:37Now the umpires have taken their stations and we're having a slight delay here as they're trying to get the crowd in and now the Padres are going out in the field.
- 7:52The Padres are 7 and 14. They're tied with Houston for last place in the Western Division. They trail by 8 and a half games behind the Red Hot Cincinnati Reds at the start of the action today.
- 8:01The Reds lead the Dodgers by five games. They're in second place. Atlanta in third, five and a half back. San Francisco in fourth. They trail by six.
- 8:09Chicago leads the Eastern Division at the start of the action today by two and a half games over Pittsburgh.
- 8:15San Francisco is three games back in third. That's our four games, three and a half games back in fourth. And now our national anthem.
- 8:45The Reds lead the Dodgers by five games.
- 9:15The Reds lead the Dodgers by six games.
- 9:45Our national anthem from San Diego, California sung by Jerry Vale who is quite a New York Mets baseball fan.
- 10:04The Mets here will move into a tie for second place with Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh and St. Louis continue on their way today. Pittsburgh and St. Louis both at this point losing in their ball games.
- 10:17The Mets if they win today can move into a tie for second place behind Chicago.
- 10:21In the National League action, Atlanta beat Chicago by a margin of three to two.
- 10:26And that means that the Mets now trail the Cubs by three games. They can have a half game and maybe one half game more if they can pick up a win here tonight against San Diego.
- 10:38In that game, the winning pitcher was Phil Negros, second one of the year he has lost four. Joe Decker losing pitcher, he has a record of one and one.
- 10:48Hank Aaron got his ninth home run. That's 563 for him in his major league career.
- 10:53Joe Decker, the starting pitcher for Chicago had a home run and the third with no one on and Billy Williams playing in his one thousand and one baseball game.
- 11:04Came up with a home run the night that he was no one on for his eighth home run of the season.
- 11:09The only game concluded in the National League. In the American League, Boston beat California 8-3 as Ray Cope was the winner losing pitcher Tom Murphy.
- 11:17And that's the only game played to a conclusion so far in the American League. Right now, this game about to commence. Here for the play-by-play is Lindsey Nelson.
- 11:27Thank you very much Ralph Shannon. Hello everybody. It's Tommy H. in and waiting now. He has an 11 game hitting streak coming into this ballgame.
- 11:35His average for the season is 225. He's had two homers, one of them hit yesterday at Candleseed Park in San Francisco.
- 11:42He's batted in four runs. The right hand batter facing right hand pitcher Al Sanderini.
- 11:48And here's the first pitch. It's hung on and topped up to Dave Short.
- 11:52Steve Hunt goes back, second baseman Dave Campbell calls him out. Campbell makes the count.
- 11:57On the first pitch, he has topped out. The second baseman Dave Campbell and Bud Harrelson is coming up.
- 12:04Harrelson has a five game hitting streak. He's hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and he's hit safely in 17 of the 19 games the Mets have played this year.
- 12:13One home run, six runs batted in, switch hitter batting left. A beautiful baseball evening in San Diego, California.
- 12:21Sanderini with a pitch, hung on and fouled up to the left side out of play.
- 12:27Sanderini was born in Irvington, New Jersey. I think he's home now in Union, New Jersey.
- 12:32Last year, the first meeting ever between the Padres and the Mets in New York.
- 12:37Sanderini was the pitcher and the Padres won. It was the only victory for San Diego over the Mets all season long.
- 12:46Chris Canisaro, the catcher now, calls time. Trying to reposition his outfielders a little bit.
- 12:53There's one way over to his left against Bud Harrelson.
- 12:57Here's a swing and a drive into left center field and it's a base hit. One hops out there by Gaston way over and left and the center fielder wheels it in there.
- 13:07Harrelson holds it first with a single.
- 13:09Once again, the Padres using the oil 69 shift against Bud Harrelson and so far this year Bud has been able to gloss up every team that has played him the way they played him last year.
- 13:20That brings up Leon Jones. He is hitting 242 for the season. He has nine runs batted in.
- 13:28Leon got off to a great start this year, then tailed off and as you go out you set him down along with Tommy A.G. and Joe Foy for three days.
- 13:37Brought them back yesterday and Jones, A.G. and Foy drove in all the med runs as they defeated the Giants 4-1.
- 13:45Off the stretch now, Santorini with a pitch and it's in for a call strike. The play on Jones.
- 13:51By the way, Mets second baseman Kenny Boswell is away on military reserve duty.
- 13:57Jerry Grote has rejoined the New York Mets. He is here, he is in uniform. He is not expected to be used at all.
- 14:04Here's a long throw over to first night in time. Harrelson's back safely.
- 14:10Grote had been hospitalized since the Mets arrived in Los Angeles to start this road trip.
- 14:15Here's a swing and a miss.
- 14:18Jerry told me before the ballgame that he wrapped around the field and after the walk around he was so tired he felt he had to sit down.
- 14:27He did not of course participate in any drills at all because the hospitalization, the test, the treatment he's been undergoing did not leave him exactly in shape
- 14:38to step into a uniform and play Major League Baseball.
- 14:41Here's a pitch out but there's nothing on.
- 14:43Chris Canavarro calling for the pitch out, thinking that the Mets might just have the running going and have a play on.
- 14:50One and two now with Archansky waiting on deck.
- 14:57Santorini checks again.
- 15:00Here's a swing and a barren ball to the right side.
- 15:02There's an old swinging roller taking on the first baseline.
- 15:08And it doesn't help from the second.
- 15:10There's two men out now.
- 15:11Archansky is coming up.
- 15:12That ball is right off the end of Leon Jones' bat and just sort of dribbled up the first baseline.
- 15:17Mover charged in.
- 15:19Loved it and tagged Leon on the baseback.
- 15:24Archansky's a left hand batter playing right field.
- 15:27Hitting 3-11, he has driven in three runs.
- 15:36As Bob and Ralph indicated, they started this ballgame with first balls for just a few minutes to allow the crowd to get in.
- 15:43It wasn't that it's that big a crowd.
- 15:45It was simply that they had had a mix-up at the turnstiles about getting the people in.
- 15:48And there were people outside who hadn't been able to get inside.
- 15:52And so they held the game up just for a few moments to get them in.
- 16:01Santorini with the pitch.
- 16:03And it swung on and fouled off the strike line.
- 16:06Lindsay, I know it's been used before, but when I ran the ball club down here in San Diego in the Pacific Coast League and the minors,
- 16:11somebody called up and said, what time was the game?
- 16:13And I said, well, can you make it?
- 16:15It was that way in those years.
- 16:17A lot of my other league fights.
- 16:19I was over at your ballpark this afternoon, as a matter of fact, Ralph.
- 16:23Nice shopping center, isn't it?
- 16:24Yes, it is.
- 16:29Pitch is low for now.
- 16:30I want to ask you about that San Diego River running by there.
- 16:33Did you ever get up in the ballpark?
- 16:34We had a lot of trouble with that ballpark when we first built it in 1958.
- 16:38With grannies, we had to put pumps in the dugouts because it's right on a very high water table.
- 16:44And we had to pump water out of the dugouts all the time.
- 16:48Here's a throw at second and Harrison gets back safely.
- 16:51Shortstop Steve Hutz came in to take the throw.
- 16:53Rodriguez picked up Hutz from the St. Louis Cardinal Organization in exchange for Billy McCool,
- 16:58and the Cardinals promptly sent McCool, a left-hand pitcher, to tell them Hutz had been cut, assigned to Tulsa, and refused to report.
- 17:091-1 pitch.
- 17:11Low for a ball, Shamsky.
- 17:13People say that that parking lot out there for that shopping center had more cars in it today when it was closed than we had when we were in business.
- 17:21Yeah, they had a lot of them there.
- 17:24The big shopping center.
- 17:27This will be a 2-1 pitch to Shamsky with Harrison at second and two men out.
- 17:33He's swinging a foul ball.
- 17:34That's not a play. It's 2-2.
- 17:36Don Glenn-Dennon is waiting on deck.
- 17:40When the Mets and the Cardinals played their first exhibition game in St. Petersburg this spring,
- 17:45Steve Hutz was at shortstop for the Cardinals.
- 17:47They were going to give him a good shot at being their shortstop.
- 17:51They had Devannon and Hutz and ended up, of course, with Daryl Maxwell, the incumbent, retaining the position.
- 18:002-2 delivery, and it is inside low for a ball, and the count is full of three and two to Shamsky.
- 18:08The San Diego Panthers have an infield alignment of Dave Colbert at first, Dave Campbell at second,
- 18:13Steve Hutz at short, and Ed Spizio at third.
- 18:16Al Perrara is in left, Clarence Gaston in center, and Ollie Brown is in right field.
- 18:23Chris Cannazero is the catcher.
- 18:27Here is a payoff pitch.
- 18:29Swung on, and it is ran top of the second by Dave Campbell, as the catcher retired to die.
- 18:35So it is no runs and a hit for Al and one left.
- 18:39In the middle of the first inning, the score is the Mets nothing and the Padres coming to bat.
- 18:44Hi, this is Bob Walton at Walton Sports Shop, urging you to stop in and see us when you need camping equipment.
- 18:53Now that vacation time is on its way, have you found in checking over your equipment that you need something additional?
- 19:00Stop in and see the wide selection we have to offer.
- 19:03Walton carries pack frames, canteens, and mess kits.
- 19:07If this is your first year for tenting, then be sure that you see Walton's for all styles of tents, air mattresses, Coleman stoves, and lanterns.
- 19:16Walton's also carries a full line of famous named sleeping bags.
- 19:20Of course, at Walton's, hunters can find everything in one convenient location.
- 19:25Guns, ammunition, and hand-loading equipment, as well as rifle scopes to make those long shots sure and safer.
- 19:34A complete line of equipment for all sports is what you will find at Walton Sports Shop, Lake Avenue, and Saratoga, where sportsmen cater to sportsmen.
- 19:59Tom Siever is on the mound tonight for the New York Mets. He has a record of four wins and four losses.
- 20:05He won his last ten last year, so he has 14 consecutive victories in National League play.
- 20:12And a week ago Wednesday in New York against the San Diego Padres, he was struck out 19 to tie the all-time Major League record to set a new record for a daytime ball game.
- 20:22He struck out the last ten Padres to set a new Major League record in that department.
- 20:28Dave Campbell is coming up. He's a right-hand batter who has hit safely in eight consecutive games, hitting.307, and he's batted in three runs.
- 20:36A right-hand batter facing right-hand pitcher Tom Siever.
- 20:40Here's the swing and a miss for strike one.
- 20:43Campbell came over from the Detroit Tigers organization, and the deal lets Sergio Nicolson from San Diego to Detroit.
- 20:55Siever again into the motion. The pitch is low and away for a ball.
- 21:10Waiting on deck is Steve Hunt, the shortstop.
- 21:13Here's a 1-1 pitch. Swung on and missed it, 1-2.
- 21:25Last time out, Siever defeated the Dodgers in Los Angeles, 3-1.
- 21:36This is a 1-2 pitch to Campbell. Swung on and missed. Siever strikes out Campbell. Actually, he has struck out the last 11 Padres that he has faced since he struck out the last ten a week ago, and he's in New York.
- 21:51I'd have to play somewhere along the line here just to get your confidence back. Somebody's going to have to punt one so they can break up that streak.
- 21:59Steve Hunt is up there now, batting left against Siever. He's hitting.077. He's had one home and one run battered in. He is 1 for 13.
- 22:09And it's in there for a golf strike. Joe Foley is on the edge of the grass at third. On the coaching lines for the Padres, Bob Skinner is at third and Dave Garcia is at first.
- 22:22Siever deals a change-up, and it misses. Not that high. A lot of motion and a big change-up served by Siever. 1-1, the Guantanamo Hunch with Clarence Gaston on deck.
- 22:38Here's a 1-1 pitch. Swung on and missed. The fastball again. It's 1-2.
- 22:47Siever rubbing up the ball a little bit now. Siever was in the Marine Corps. He took his boot training here in San Diego. So did Gil Hodge. So did Bob Murphy.
- 23:01Here's the 1-2 pitch. Swung on and is fast up to the left side. Oh, and near the line, across the foul territory. Makes the catch in foul territory.
- 23:11At least the strikeout string has been broken by the Padres. Hunch has fouled out the third base. Two minutes out.
- 23:21By Gaston coming up. He is at basically a four-straight yet. He's hitting 3-17 for the season. Two homers and 10 runs batted in.
- 23:32The Padres have won seven and they've lost 14. Here's a pitch low for a ball. Al Ferrara is on deck. The New York Mets have won 10 games last night.
- 23:45For a percentage of 526. Swing on and missed. It's 1-1.
- 23:55The Padres, of course, are in the Western Division of the National League and the Mets are in the East, which means they play each other 12 times during the course of the season.
- 24:03Six games here in San Diego and six back in New York. They're just swinging a foul ball off and out of play at 1-2.
- 24:12The Mets will play four games against the Padres in this series. Single game tomorrow afternoon and a double header here on Sunday,
- 24:21which means that after that, the Mets will have only two more games against the Padres here in San Diego this season.
- 24:28Here's a 1-2 pitch. Breaking pitches for a foul strike. Got him with a curve ball.
- 24:33And Seaver gets his second strike out of the inning as he retires the side in order. No runs, no hits, no errors, not left.
- 24:41At the end of an inning, the score is, that's nothing and the Padres, nothing.
- 24:48Well, here's a reminder. There are still many types of season box and reserve seed plans available for the games to be played by the New York Mets at Shea Stadium this season.
- 24:58And they'll suit the needs of both business firms and individual fans.
- 25:02Actually, I'm sure you know that there's no better way to entertain your friends or your clients than a day or an evening out of a Mets baseball game.
- 25:09So, whether you're interested in a full season at Shea Stadium or one of the many other attractive plans,
- 25:16you can contact the ticket manager and he'll be only too happy to arrange for an appointment.
- 25:21The National League season in New York last year was one of the most exciting ever.
- 25:26And if you were out down the stretch drive and on into the postseason, you know what that meant.
- 25:31We look for more of the same kind of excitement throughout the season as the Mets defend their world championship.
- 25:39So, if you'd be interested in one of the ticket plans, contact the ticket manager. The number in New York is 6723000.
- 25:486723000.
- 25:53Number 22, Don Slantonet.
- 25:57Don Slantonet is coming up now.
- 26:00Right hand batting first baseman.
- 26:06Hitting 262, three homers and 11 runs batted in. He leads the Mets and runs batted in.
- 26:12Sanzarini pitches foul back with drive one.
- 26:16Joe Hoy is on deck. Had a great day yesterday.
- 26:20Had a swing and a foul ball. Perhaps between innings you heard the happy birthday salute on the organ.
- 26:25It was for Eddie Miller, who is the secretary of treasure of the San Diego Hotspoh League.
- 26:30And he's celebrating his 65th birthday here tonight and was saluted between innings.
- 26:39Two strike pitch to Ken Donnett.
- 26:42Outside for a ball. One and two. Sanzarini has won one game and lost three. Last year he won eight and lost 14.
- 26:58Now the pitch. Swung on. Hit on the ground and it is going through for a base hit up the middle.
- 27:03Steve Hunt starts to get the ball.
- 27:06Now the pitch. Swung on. Hit on the ground and it is going through for a base hit up the middle.
- 27:12Steve Hunt started over his left and just did not get to it. It went through and Ferris Gaston returned it.
- 27:17And Donnett is on with the ground single up the middle.
- 27:21Second hit for the Mets. On foul Sanzarini and Joe Hoy is coming up.
- 27:28Joe Hoy has had 13 hits as a Mets. Two doubles, one homer, eight runs batted in.
- 27:34Hitting two oh six.
- 27:36Or had a couple of stolen bases yesterday.
- 27:41In addition to three base hits.
- 27:47That pitch is low for a ball.
- 27:50Wayne Jarrett on deck.
- 27:55There's a couple of fellas parading a batter down through the crowd that says sports gala.
- 28:02Bronx, New York to lose the Mets and they're not exactly getting a big reception.
- 28:06Sports gala. Bronx, New York, no Mets it says.
- 28:10Here's a pitch low for a ball.
- 28:12There are over a hundred Marines there doing duty over here for two weeks at our front for Scott.
- 28:18Where Tom Siever did some of his reserve duty and they're out here in force on mosque for the New York Mets.
- 28:23Here comes another big batter.
- 28:26That looks like a double bed sheet.
- 28:29Here's a swing and a lift.
- 28:32The boys from the Bronx love their Mets.
- 28:37VA.
- 28:42Two and one to count to four.
- 28:44Glenn Denon is on it first.
- 28:46Covert's holding against him there.
- 28:48Sanzarini's pitch swung on and they score the first and Glenn Denon's back safely.
- 28:53Two and two to count to four.
- 28:55There is no score in this game with the Mets your batting in the top half of the second inning.
- 29:09Canna's arrow flashes a sign out Sanzarini sets up.
- 29:13The pitch is blown away for a ball.
- 29:15It's out full at three two.
- 29:17There is nobody out.
- 29:20Dick Stelow the umpire behind the plate.
- 29:23Crew chief Al Barlich the National League senior umpire is at first.
- 29:27Ed Vargo at second.
- 29:29Fall fire around at third.
- 29:33Glenn Denon's running.
- 29:35Pitches it on the ground up to middle and it's taken by Hunt for the fourth.
- 29:38First and a drive.
- 29:40That ground ball was right at the bag at second.
- 29:43Which enabled Hunt simply to take it with his foot on the bag for the fourth.
- 29:47He was about a step ahead of Glenn Denon.
- 29:49And then throw on the first for Dennis Holyrover with the no avail.
- 29:53So it is a six three double play.
- 29:55The runner was going on the three two pitch with nobody out.
- 30:03Wayne Garrett coming up with nobody on and two men out.
- 30:06Left hand batting second baseman hitting one thirty three with one run batted in.
- 30:15That's in for a toss right.
- 30:17Wayne Garrett actually can be used at any of the end field positions.
- 30:21Made more third base than anything else for the Mets last year.
- 30:24But he can be used at second or at short.
- 30:29There's a change that's in the air.
- 30:31The center field is coming hard.
- 30:33It's where Jaston had he can't get there.
- 30:35It's a base hit.
- 30:38That's been backed up by Ferraro to get on a hop.
- 30:41This is natural grass turf here in San Diego.
- 30:47So the Mets get their third hit off Santorini and Duffy Dyer is coming up now.
- 30:56Duffy's five for twenty six.
- 30:58Still looking for his first RBI this year.
- 31:00He's hitting one ninety two.
- 31:05We'll be on the air tomorrow at three fifty five p.m. New York time.
- 31:09Bring you the second game of the series between the Mets and the San Diego Padres.
- 31:15Santorini off the stretch.
- 31:16Here's the pitch to Dyer and it's in there for a called strike.
- 31:19I'm sure we're wearing the jacket but is that on deck.
- 31:25The president of the San Diego Padres is Buzzy Bovesy.
- 31:29Former vice president and general manager of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 31:35There's a pitch low.
- 31:36One and one.
- 31:43Bovesy is one of the owners of the Padres.
- 31:50Now the pitch.
- 31:52Blowing away from all.
- 31:53It's two and one.
- 31:54It's two and one.
- 32:03The Padres are still without the services of their shortstop Tommy Dean.
- 32:07Who suffered a shoulder separation in an early season collision.
- 32:10They expect him to be out about another week.
- 32:12Here's the pitch high and away.
- 32:14Three and one to Duffy Dyer with Seaborn on deck.
- 32:31Three one deliver with the runner going and it is swung on.
- 32:34It missed.
- 32:35No throw.
- 32:36And arriving safely in second with a stolen bench is Wayne Garrett.
- 32:40It was a check swing by Dyer at the plate but umpire Nick Stella says he took it around.
- 32:46The count goes to three and two.
- 32:48It's a three one pitch.
- 32:49Canazero knowing the pitch was outside it would have been ball for him.
- 32:53It was way outside.
- 32:54Just wasn't prepared to throw.
- 32:57Now it'll be a three two delivery with the runner in second.
- 33:00There is no score that would Wayne Garrett's first stolen base of this season.
- 33:04And then he bends forward to take the sign down.
- 33:09Canazero and the playoff pitch.
- 33:13Blowing away.
- 33:14So Dyer goes to first.
- 33:21Garrett holds it second.
- 33:23Tom Seavers coming up.
- 33:24Seavers four for sixteen.
- 33:26He's had a double batted in three runs.
- 33:28He's hitting two fifties.
- 33:34We follow a frustration identification.
- 33:35This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 33:37You're listening to New York Mets baseball on WKAJ FM 102.3 in Saratoga Springs, New York.
- 33:43The home of the New York Mets.
- 33:48This is Lindsey Dawson with Ralph Kanner and Bob Murphy at San Diego Stadium in San Diego, California.
- 33:55Mets and the Padres no score in the top of the second.
- 33:57Men runners lead at first and second.
- 33:59Here's the pitch to Seavers.
- 34:00It's blown away for a ball.
- 34:02Tommy Agee moves up on deck.
- 34:04Chris Canazero, the Padres catcher, calls time and goes out to the mound.
- 34:08Forward with Al Santolini.
- 34:10He's a 21 year old pitcher.
- 34:13Santolini's lifetime record against the Mets is one win and one loss.
- 34:22The pitching coach of the Padres is Roger Crick, former Dodger pitcher, former Mets pitcher.
- 34:36Here's a one-oh delivery.
- 34:38Swung on and fouled out.
- 34:40Out over the head of Yogi Berra, the Mets' coaching first.
- 34:43Eddie Yost is on the lines of fear.
- 34:52On Sunday, we'll be broadcasting both games of the doubleheader.
- 34:57We'll be televising the first game on Sunday on the air at 4 p.m. New York time.
- 35:05Here's a pitch in for Carl Sascha.
- 35:07He was started to be gone late off.
- 35:08He was in the strike zone. The count goes to one and two.
- 35:23The runners take their lead, first and second.
- 35:31Santolini nods affirmatively and delivers a pitch.
- 35:36Fouled off to the right side out of play.
- 35:38Count holds at one and two.
- 35:47It was a warm and sunny day here in San Diego.
- 35:52Well, a lot of those.
- 35:55There's a swing and a ground ball and a foul back of third out of play going on down toward the Padre bullpen.
- 36:02The count holds one and two to Tom Siever after his first time in the game.
- 36:14The Padres are in their second year as a National League baseball team.
- 36:21Pitch is outside for a ball. It's two and two.
- 36:40Again, runners lead at first and second.
- 36:43Two-two pitch. Swung on and foul back. It holds two-two.
- 36:48On this road trip so far, the Mets lost two by identical scores of one-nothing to the Dodgers in one of those games with 15 innings and one-one.
- 36:58Then in San Francisco, the Mets just reversed that.
- 37:00They won two and lost one to the San Francisco Giants.
- 37:05Pitch to Sievers. Swung on, hit on the ground to first.
- 37:08Taken by Colbert, he goes to the bag and the side is retired.
- 37:13So it's no runs on two hits, no walks, no errors and two men left. In the middle of the second inning, the score is the Mets nothing, the Padres nothing.
- 37:22Having a problem in deciding where to take your group on its next outing? If so, let the Mets group sales department solve it for you.
- 37:28This department is manned by experts in handling both men's and women's groups.
- 37:32These same specialists encourage community and civic organizations, social and fraternal clubs, youth, family and athletic groups to take in a Mets ball game and enjoy a day of shame.

- 38:40He's a native of Brooklyn. He's hitting 225 with two homers and two runs battered out.
- 38:45Was an expansion draft selection of the Padres off the roster of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 38:50Broken his ankle while playing with the Dodgers.
- 38:54Severs pitches in there for a call strike.
- 38:58Cuarro was the last man that faced Severs and his string of 10 strikeouts to close that game a week ago Wednesday in New York.
- 39:08Earlier he had hit a home run. Here's a pitch outside. He started it and finished it, Lindsay.
- 39:14Yes he did.
- 39:18The Atlanta Braves defeated the Chicago Cubs tonight by a score of 3-2.
- 39:24Here's a breaking pitch that's foul back of third out of play.
- 39:281-2 to Cuarro.
- 39:30In that game in Atlanta, Phil Negros, the knuckleballer, won his second. He started by losing four straights. He had won two and lost four.
- 39:37And young Joe Decker was the loser for the Cubs. Phil Reagan relieved him in the eighth inning. Decker's 1-1 lost one now.
- 39:44Henry Aaron, it is 563rd home run. At first hitting with nobody on that. That's Aaron's ninth of this year.
- 39:51Decker hit a homer for the Cubs and then Billy Williams hit one in the ninth for the Cubs.
- 39:56Pitch is low and away. Two and two out of Cuarro.
- 39:59With Lake Covert on deck.
- 40:01The end of seven innings of play. The Houston Astros lead the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3. Larry Decker for Houston. They've lost eight in a row.
- 40:102-2 for Twangahd and missed. Seabird strikes out for Rawa.
- 40:14Three strikeouts for Seabird. He struck out two in the first inning.
- 40:19For his mate, Covert, coming up.
- 40:23He's had six home runs this year and 14 runs by the ladies hitting 216.
- 40:28Steve Carver is pitching tonight for the St. Louis Cardinals. Sal Campisi relieved him in the sixth and reached 98. Lou Brock, home of Dindy.
- 40:36Fizz with one on for the Cardinals. Brock's second.
- 40:41It's a swing and a foul ball.
- 40:43The end of seven innings of play. The Cincinnati Reds sixth. The Pittsburgh Pirates four.
- 40:49Stargalley started for Pittsburgh. Al McBean in the seventh. Wayne Simpson started for Cincinnati. Clay Carroll in the seventh.
- 40:55Johnny Bench in the three-round homer, his sixth of the year for Cincinnati.
- 41:01That pitch is low. Willis Tarja will hit a grand slammer for the Pittsburgh Pirates, his third homer of this year.
- 41:10The other two went over the right field for Williams and it's his fourth grand slam of his career.
- 41:14Here's the swing and a high-five ball to left field. Leigh-Anne Jones is underneath, waiting, and he makes the catch.
- 41:22Two-way and Ali Brown's coming up. Brown's hitting 242, two homers, five runs better than.
- 41:28Game to the Padres from the San Francisco Giants. He was the number one draft choice in the expansion graph of these Padres.
- 41:35The Padres are all displaying the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium tonight. Carl Morton going against Don Sutton.
- 41:42And the Phillies are up at Candlestick in San Francisco. Jim Bunning against Rich Robertson.
- 41:47So that's the alignment in the National League. Let's have a chance to move up.
- 41:51Here's a pitch low for a ball. Yankees beat the Milwaukee Brewers 63. Mel Stottlemeyer is the winner. He's 2-3.
- 41:59Gene Bobbins is the loser, 2-2. Danny Walden hit his eighth homer and the eighth and one on.
- 42:03The Milwaukee change-up gets each shot knocked out by Harrison Redd, no play.
- 42:09And Ali Brown is on with a base hit. Off-speed pitch by Siever. It's deep in the hole.
- 42:16And Harrison went over and shot a backhand step and it just popped out of the glove. He tried to pick it up and couldn't find it.
- 42:22Now, it's a base hit.
- 42:26It's Fizio, third baseman.
- 42:30Heading 2-19, one homer and three runs better than.
- 42:33Baltimore Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins 9-3. Dave McNally the winner. He's 4-1. Dave Boswell the loser, 0-3.
- 42:40Cesar Tobar and Terry Crowley had home runs. Pass ball outside for a ball.
- 42:46And the Oakland Athletics beat the Washington Sunators 12-5.
- 42:50That's Fish Hunter, the winner. Casey Cox, the loser. Green, Rodriguez and Lee May had home runs.
- 42:59Red Sox beat the Cal Angels 8-3. Ray Culp over Tom Murphy.
- 43:05This pitch is low. Carl Yosemsky had two home runs for the Red Sox. His second and third, George Scott had one.
- 43:11His fourth, Reggie Smith had one. His fourth.
- 43:14The end of seven innings of play. The Kansas City Royals 5 and the Cleveland Indians 3.
- 43:19Dave Moriarty lead by Mike Headland on the seventh. Mojtrovsky on the eighth. Dean Chance lead by Bob Miller on the fourth.
- 43:24Luke Vanilla hit his fourth home on the first with two on. As the pitch is low and away.
- 43:29So Cesar's gone behind the physio 3 and 0. With two men out and a runner at first. No score in the ballgame.
- 43:48Pitch is outside for ball and it's a walk. The physio.
- 43:52He gets rid of the bat, goes down to first pace. That moves Olly Brown up to second and this Canazero will be the batter.
- 43:59Canazero is hitting 255 and... Canazero is better than six runs.
- 44:07The NBA playoffs score was just enough to have you heard it.
- 44:13The end of the half. Los Angeles 54 in the next 47.
- 44:18In the middle of the sixth inning. The Chicago White Bucys and the Detroit Tigers 4.
- 44:25Joe Horne on the left hand side for Detroit. Kimmerman in the sixth. Al Kalan hit his second homer in the first inning for the Detroit Tigers.
- 44:34Pitch is in for a call strike to Chris Canazero.
- 44:42Canazero bats number eight in the order.
- 44:45He was an original Mets. He was selected by the Mets when they were formed off the roster of the Cardinals.
- 44:54Swing and a foul ball up to the right side now to play a two-strike.
- 44:58On Sunday, Gary Gentry and Jerry Kuzma will be pitching for the New York Mets. Mike Horkins and Pat Dobson for the Padres.
- 45:15Bottom of the second, no score. Padres at first and second with two men out.
- 45:20Two-strike pitch now. I see where he checks the runners. And deal. It's outside.
- 45:26One and two. Al Santorini is on deck.
- 45:34This stadium was opened in August of 1967.
- 45:43This will be a one-two pitch.
- 45:47Outside it's two and two. The capacity of the stadium is 50,000.
- 45:51All around the outfield there is a wall 17 feet high. Seating area is all around the outfield.
- 46:02The crowd is happy.
- 46:13Holly Brown at second. It's Bezier at first.
- 46:18Pitchers come out and Seabrook gets his fourth strikeout.
- 46:22And the crowd is retired.
- 46:24No run. A hitter on the earth and two left. At the end of two full innings of play. The score is the Mets nothing and the Padres nothing.
- 46:32Ted Endura's straight at Straits Gardens just two miles off Lake Avenue on the old Skylerco Road.
- 46:37Have a special now on Rosebushes for Mets listeners. Jackson and Perkins red double with a suggested retail price of $450.
- 46:44Here at San Diego the name of Murphy is very prominent.
- 46:52Bob's brother Jack Murphy is the sports editor of the San Diego Union.
- 46:56Right now though he's down covering the Kentucky Derby so we'll have to give you Bob for the point-by-point.
- 47:01I'm sorry about that Ralph.
- 47:06Get away tomorrow.
- 47:08Tommy Agee will be up against Al Santorini. Top of the third no score.
- 47:15After the in game tomorrow two on Sunday and the weather holds out tomorrow Sunday like it was today. It's going to be fabulous.
- 47:24Tommy Agee is 0 for 1 retired on an infield top fly taken by Dave Campbell.
- 47:31The second baseman is first time up.
- 47:33And Santorini delivers low outside of ball one. Al Santorini born in Irvington, New Jersey now makes his home in Union.
- 47:42Before long he'll be 22.
- 47:46Had a swing and a miss at a curve ball. One well one strike.
- 47:51He had a lot of very well pitched ball games for the Padres last year.
- 47:56San Diego lacking for hitting.
- 47:59Scored very few runs for him.
- 48:02He'd lose 2 to 1, 3 to 2.
- 48:06Off the outside corner taken by Tommy Agee it's two balls and a strike.
- 48:12You're a young pitcher working for an expansion ball club that first couple of years until he can pick up some hitting.
- 48:17It's a tough way to go.
- 48:19Inside and low in the count three and one now to Tommy Agee.
- 48:23San Diego probably has the ideal pitching coach in Roger Craig who suffered through
- 48:28those early expansion years with the New York Mets and knows what it's like.
- 48:32Three one delivery lined hard over second in the center field of base hit.
- 48:38Clean single to center by Tommy Agee to lead off the third.
- 48:42For the Mets base hit number four of Al Santorini.
- 48:47Tommy Agee has now hit safely in 12 straight ball games.
- 48:52Normally around the associate a 12 game hitting streak with a hot bat.
- 48:56Really hasn't been true in Agee's case until I think just the last couple of days.
- 49:00His last three base hits have really been hit hard.
- 49:03One is a pinch hitter, one was a home run and then this one right here and they have been tagged.
- 49:07Now Bud Harrelson waiting fouled back over the screen into the crowd behind third.
- 49:12No play.
- 49:14Last year the longest string the Mets had was 11 shared by Agee and Jones.
- 49:24Bud Harrelson single his first time up.
- 49:31And a line drive into center field of base hit by Buddy Harrelson.
- 49:36Racing back is gas to the center fielder.
- 49:38Agee is around third being held up in the second base with a double.
- 49:42Bud Harrelson is fifth two base hit.
- 49:49Bud Harrelson now has 25 hits this year.
- 49:53Of the 25, five doubles, five troubles and one home run.
- 50:0011 of 25 hits have been extra base hits.
- 50:03That's the second time Bud in this ball game has crossed up the Fabries who are playing him like they did last year.
- 50:09He pulled that ball into the vacated spot in center field when Gaston was shaded over to left center.
- 50:17Now Cleon Jones stepping in.
- 50:20Around the leg the word will spread rapidly and the opposition is definitely going to have the defense Harrelson differently than they have in the past.
- 50:28Cleon Jones facing right hander Al Santorini.
- 50:33Cleon 0 for 1, bounced out his first time up.
- 50:36Cleon looked good returning to the lineup against the Giants at Candlestick Park yesterday.
- 50:42And a foul fly hit deep down the right field line, no play.
- 51:01Longest hitting streak in Mets history, 18 consecutive games by Frank Thomas back in that first year.
- 51:09Low and outside.
- 51:11One ball and one strike.
- 51:13Frank also set the club home run record that first year with 34.
- 51:18Frank makes his home in the Pittsburgh area now retired from baseball.
- 51:21He does have a baseball cap in the summer.
- 51:23He'll be coming back to New York in July for the old timers event.
- 51:26And the Pitchford Jones a curve on the outside corner.
- 51:30One ball and two strikes to Cleon.
- 51:33No score the Mets are casting a threat AG on third, Harrelson on second.
- 51:40Yogi Vera coaching at first, Eddie Yost coaching at third.
- 51:43Art Chamsky is beyond deck batter.
- 51:49The outfield is around toward left.
- 51:53Here's the pitch on the way.
- 51:54Swing and a miss he's stuck him out.
- 51:57That was quite a pitch by Santorini.
- 51:59Fast ball, low and away on the outside corner.
- 52:04Probably one of the most difficult pitches in baseball to hit.
- 52:09The receiver struck out his 19 against the Padres in New York.
- 52:14He said after the game that it was probably the most consistent he had ever been at hitting that knee high outside corner with a fastball.
- 52:22Now first base is open.
- 52:23Art Chamsky will be intentionally walked and he'll pitch to Don Cleon Dunham with the bases loaded.
- 52:30Strikeout by Santorini his first.
- 52:33And Don Cleon Dunham who's been hitting will be coming up with a bases loaded.
- 52:40Kick, just a little more kick.
- 52:42That's one of the things that makes IRC stand out from the other colas.
- 52:47That will set you up against the difference of Royal Vancouver.
- 52:59Don Cleon Dunham hitting 279.
- 53:02Lined a hard single to left center field his first time at bat.
- 53:06Padres have their infield back at double play depth.
- 53:09The outfield is deep and shaded toward left.
- 53:11Now the pitch.
- 53:12Swing and a miss.
- 53:15Al Santorini has a good arm.
- 53:21He was first choice in the free agent draft by the Atlanta Braves when he signed his first pro contract.
- 53:28Outland Dunham waiting.
- 53:29Ground ball bounced toward the middle of the diamond base.
- 53:32Going into center field.
- 53:33HG scores.
- 53:34Harrelson is flying home.
- 53:36And the miss lead to nothing.
- 53:4013 runs batted in for Don Cleon Dunham on a total of 13 bases this year.
- 53:46Quite a ratio.
- 53:48And Don Cleon Dunham has been the Mets hottest batter.
- 53:51He has hit the ball awfully well over the last four or five ball games.
- 53:55He has had three home runs.
- 53:56And here Preston Gomez, the manager of the Padres, elected to play the percentage.
- 54:00And he walked the left hand batter to get to the right hand batter who was red hot and it didn't work.
- 54:06Don Cleon Dunham very easily could have had four for four at yesterday's game at the San Francisco.
- 54:11He had two for four and twice was robbed of hits.
- 54:14Had he not been robbed right now, Mr. Cleon Dunham would be six for six.
- 54:20Joe Foy is up.
- 54:21And now the pitcher Santorini Whirls with no throw is made.
- 54:25Little mix up so Campbell, the second baseman, comes in.
- 54:31Mr. Carmen Johnson, please go to the first gate office on the Plaza.
- 54:36Mr. Carmen Johnson, please report to the first gate office.
- 54:40Cleon Dunham driving runs in at a rapid rate.
- 54:44On 11 hits collected this year, 13 runs on 13 hits, 13 runs batted in.
- 54:52New York in front now, 2-0.
- 54:54We're on the top of the third inning.
- 54:55Runners on first and second one out.
- 54:57And the pitch to Joe Foy is a curve, swing and miss.
- 55:05Now Preston Gomez ascending the sign to the San Diego bullpen.
- 55:08We will start getting warm up action.
- 55:12Ron Herball, a right hander, and Dan Goons, a left hander, will start warming up.
- 55:17The pitch to Joe Foy, a fast ball over the outside corner of the ball strike.
- 55:22Wayne Garrett is the on deck batter.
- 55:33Joe Foy, back in the lineup yesterday, celebrated his return with three straight hits.
- 55:38And the pitch by Sandorini, a swing and a miss.
- 55:41He got him with a curve ball.
- 55:45Sandorini with a good looking curve ball, fans Joe Foy, two men down.
- 55:49And Wayne Garrett will be the hitter.
- 55:51Wayne the seventh man to bat here on the third inning.
- 55:54Tommy Agee started the rally when he singled the center.
- 55:58Bud Harrelson promptly gave it momentum with a double to right center, putting Agee on third.
- 56:03Cleon was struck out, Shamsky walked intentionally.
- 56:06And Glendening singled the center, driving Agee and Harrelson home.
- 56:11In the dirt, blocked nicely by Chris Cannizzaro, no advance.
- 56:18In the American League, the Orioles beat the Twins.
- 56:21Dave McNally won his fourth.
- 56:23And Dave Boswell, a 20 game winner a year ago, has yet to win this year's game now, is 0-3.
- 56:31Now Sandorini makes the one second stop.
- 56:33Here's the pitch.
- 56:35And a breaking ball over the inside corner of the ball strike.
- 56:41Duffy Dyer is beyond deck batter.
- 56:48Let's have made this road trip with one catcher, Duffy Dyer.
- 56:53And a foul tip.
- 56:56And for all practical purposes, it is still only one because Jerry Grody is just out of the hospital.
- 57:02He's in uniform, worked out very lightly before the game tonight, but he is not ready to return to action.
- 57:12Jerry said the fans in New York were just magnificent, the amount of mail he received while he was hospitalized in Santa Monica, California.
- 57:22He can't beat a Betts baseball fan.
- 57:25And the pitch on the way.
- 57:27Fastball just inside to Wayne Garrett.
- 57:31Jerry was saying that in the hospital he received calls from two of last year's teammates.
- 57:36Bobby File and Rod Gasper playing with the Tidewater Club at the International League this year.
- 57:40Tidewater was in Toledo for a ball game and they got on the phone and called Jerry to see how he was doing.
- 57:46Here's the pitch to Garrett.
- 57:48And a half swing, he held up in time.
- 57:50Canazaro now is asking Stelho to check with his buddies.
- 57:54He does check and it is a strikeout.
- 57:57Stelho agreed with Garrett, but Al Barlick, the senior umpire at third, who would have the lip of the left hand batter up, said no, he swung at the pitch.
- 58:07Side retired on the strikeout, Santorini's third.
- 58:11Two runs, there were three hits.
- 58:14No errors and two left on.
- 58:17In the middle of the third inning, the New York Mets two and the San Diego Padres nothing.
- 58:22I am a going on a long journey.
- 58:29I will be following the springs.
- 58:34It is high time that I was searching for the natural things.
- 58:43At Rheingold, we brew beer with the natural things.
- 58:46We believe a glass of beer should be a simple thing made with natural ingredients. Good water, North Dakota barley, Great American corn, imported and domestic hops, and thyme.
- 58:57A simple thing that lets Rheingold carbonate itself naturally.
- 59:01If you wonder why Rheingold Extra Dry tastes better than other beers, it's because we keep it simple and natural.
- 59:07Natural Rheingold.
- 59:09It is high time that I was searching for the natural things.
- 59:18Rheingold Breweries, Inc., New York, New York and Orange, New Jersey, ask you to help keep America clean.
- 59:29And then on a really beautiful season that should make it worth seeing, we see the
- 59:34Is
- 59:45official
- 59:52conference to
- 59:57put
- 59:58Dave Campbell, the second baseman, is on deck.
- 1:00:03And a knee-high strike on the outside corner, and quickly,
- 1:00:06Saver establishes a two-strike advantage in pitching to Al Santorini.
- 1:00:11Santorini has been up six times this year.
- 1:00:14He's looking for his first hit.
- 1:00:16High, ball one. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:00:29Now Saver over the head, around comes the arm, low and outside on a curveball,
- 1:00:34and it's two and two.
- 1:00:36Tom was in a minor jam in the last inning.
- 1:00:39He had helped himself by getting that lead off batter, Al Ferrara.
- 1:00:42He struck out Ferrara.
- 1:00:45Ground ball hit toward the middle.
- 1:00:47Tom Harrelson to his left. He's up with him.
- 1:00:49Throws to Klondon, and Santorini is up.
- 1:00:53One out and nobody on in the San Diego third.
- 1:00:56Now the leadoff batter, Dave Campbell.
- 1:01:00Campbell was struck out his first time at bat.
- 1:01:04Cloud rates are very high on Campbell, and he certainly has been performing well to date.
- 1:01:09Over the first 21 games of the season, Campbell hitting a 3-0-3.
- 1:01:14His work is good in the field, and the pitch is a strike on the outside corner.
- 1:01:27Now Saver side again on Duffy Dyer's target.
- 1:01:30Swing and a miss. He looked like the slider he went after, and the counter strike too.
- 1:01:36Steve Hunt's playing shortstop is the on-decadent.
- 1:01:41Tommy Dean opened the season short for the Padres, played for a while and then was hurt.
- 1:01:46They say he will return in about a week. Now the pitch.
- 1:01:50Hit high in the air to center field. It's fairly deep.
- 1:01:53Meandering back, Tommy Agee. Now he turns and makes the catch.
- 1:01:57Close to the edge of the warning track in right center.
- 1:02:00We pause for station identification.
- 1:02:03This is New York Mets baseball on WKAJ FM 102.3 in Saratoga Springs, New York.
- 1:02:17Bob Murphy with Ralph Kader and Lindsey Nelson.
- 1:02:19Mets lead San Diego 2-0 last half of the third inning.
- 1:02:24The batter is Steve Hunt.
- 1:02:26And the former Cardinal takes a fastball for a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:02:33San Diego gave up left hand pitcher Billy McCool to St. Louis to get Steve Hunt.
- 1:02:39Inside and low.
- 1:02:42He was in spring training as Lindsey pointed out with the Cardinals.
- 1:02:45He was very much in the middle of that shortstop battle.
- 1:02:48Eventually won by the incumbent Dow Maxville.
- 1:02:51Foul ball, a backflip on a broadcasting group. No play.
- 1:02:55After he came to San Diego in the trade, he went out to Salt Lake City.
- 1:03:00And just about three days ago was brought back.
- 1:03:04Talking to Peter Vavace before the ball game tonight, the Padres are working with Salt Lake City.
- 1:03:10They said they have six inches of snow in the ballpark there right now.
- 1:03:13One-two delivery. Foul behind third back into the crowd. No play.
- 1:03:20But Peter says it's all right. We were lucky our ball club was on the road at the moment.
- 1:03:25You're not supposed to get that much snow this late in the year, are you, Ron?
- 1:03:29I don't think you are. Nothing's all foul left.
- 1:03:33Pitching one and two. Outside and high. The count is two and two.
- 1:03:38Two outs, nobody on. Time to save her in quest of number five.
- 1:03:48And the pitch is thrown to the left-hand hitter.
- 1:03:53Foul foul. He got a round on an inside fastball and ripped it.
- 1:03:56But he was far in front of the pitch.
- 1:03:58For the Padres, their center fielder, Clarence Gaston, has been doing very well as the on-deck batter.
- 1:04:04Padres is trying to build their ball club on young pitching and trying to improve their defense to make their pitching even better.
- 1:04:13And the fastball has taken the strike three goal.
- 1:04:16Strikeout number five for Tom Saver.
- 1:04:19Tom is continuing to average better than a strikeout and inning for the season.
- 1:04:24No runs, no hits, no errors, and none left on.
- 1:04:28And at the end of three, the New York Mets two and the San Diego Padres nothing.

- 1:05:47W. Dyer batting eighth of the order is the hitter against Al Santorini.
- 1:05:51Ground ball off the pitcher's left, charging in hard now.
- 1:05:55Is Speezy on the first is not in time and Dyer is on with an infield hit.
- 1:06:02The fast one back to the mound, a count off the glove of the pitcher Santorini.
- 1:06:06He changed the direction of the ball toward the left side of the infield.
- 1:06:10Third base with Speezy, raised in, picked it up.
- 1:06:13Close play but Dyer beat it.
- 1:06:20That is the seventh hit for the New York Mets and Tom Siever will be coming up and let's see how Gilly likes to play it.
- 1:06:28Number 41.
- 1:06:31That's lead to nothing.
- 1:06:35We have a beautiful night and a good crowd here at San Diego Stadium.
- 1:06:44Now Nate Colbert holes against the runner.
- 1:06:46They look for the bat. The second baseman charges in. Ground ball to Colbert.
- 1:06:50He throws the second one out. Back to first save.
- 1:06:56Oh there's a little wrinkle in defense against the bat.
- 1:07:02I don't know whether Joe is sagging or not but he took the bum off and had Siever swing away.
- 1:07:08And Siever hit a ground ball and almost went through the hole between first and second.
- 1:07:13Colbert grabbed it and threw the second for the fourth play there.
- 1:07:16Siever reaching on the fielder's choice.
- 1:07:18The interesting wrinkle he possibly found was that the second baseman, Dave Campbell, came running in full speed to cover the bun instead of the first baseman.
- 1:07:26That's one of the few times I've seen that play and it almost didn't work as Gil Hodges smelled it out.
- 1:07:33He did a bat and a high pop up behind the play-doh Tommy Hagee's bat.
- 1:07:38And a zero as an easy play.
- 1:07:44Gil Hodges came so near to pulling that one off.
- 1:07:47It was almost as though he anticipated it.
- 1:07:50Instead of having Siever front, Siever swung away and hit a ground ball that Colbert lunged after and caught.
- 1:07:56It almost went between Colbert and the second baseman Campbell who was racing in toward home plate.
- 1:08:06And here's Harrelson has two for two, a single left and a double to right center.
- 1:08:11That is now hitting three twenty-five.
- 1:08:13And he bluffs it up on and takes outside and a high ball one.
- 1:08:23Harrelson leading the Mets in runs scored in total hits.
- 1:08:28In three base hits, ground ball smuggled beautifully by Dave Campbell.
- 1:08:40Highway robbery to driving Harrelson with his bird straight in.
- 1:08:45A diving stop by a second baseman Dave Campbell.
- 1:08:48He plays second base and plays it well.
- 1:08:50And he scrambled to his feet and threw the first for the odds.
- 1:08:53No runs, one hit, no errors and one left.
- 1:08:56In the middle of the fourth inning, the New York Mets tour and the San Diego Padres is done.
- 1:09:08Well Mets fans, we're into another season and we hope a really great one for your ball club.

- 1:09:53All this service for only $1.25. Wax is 50 cents extra.
- 1:09:58Believe me Mets fans, this is a bargain with today's inflated prices.
- 1:10:02Come on in and give them a try.
- 1:10:09San Diego Padres will have the middle of the batting order facing Tom Seaver in the fourth inning.
- 1:10:13There's Gaston, Al Carrara and Nate Colbert.
- 1:10:20Gaston hitting 313 leads the Padres in total hits with 26.
- 1:10:28The Atlanta Braves defeated the Chicago Guv's 3-2 with Phil Negril winning his second game. He went the route.
- 1:10:34Joe Decker was the loser and Henry Aaron hit his ninth home run.
- 1:10:39Gaston taking a high ball one. At the age of 35, Henry Aaron is off to another sensational year.
- 1:10:50Now the line up, pitched by Seaver, swing and a miss on a high hard one. One ball, one strike.
- 1:10:55Gaston was fouled out on the strikes in the first inning.
- 1:11:03We have not seen the strikeout figures in the league in recent days. Last we saw Seaver was leading the league.
- 1:11:09A swing and a miss. It's 1-2.
- 1:11:13And entering this game tonight, Tom Seaver had 43 strikeouts in 42 innings.
- 1:11:21Both Seaver and Nolan Ryan averaging better than nine a game.
- 1:11:25Here's the pitch on the way. Kerr with the outside. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:11:30Looks like the Houston Astros will break their eight game losing streak.
- 1:11:34They lead the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 on the ninth inning in St. Louis.
- 1:11:38Larry Dierker pitching for the Astros.
- 1:11:42Pitching 2-2. And a drive in the air to right field. Back to Shamsky. He's under it.
- 1:11:47And out makes the catch near the warning track.
- 1:11:51One out and nobody on.
- 1:11:54For the second time tonight in Cincinnati, the game is being held up because of rain.
- 1:11:59Cincinnati leading Pittsburgh 6-4 at the end of the seventh.
- 1:12:04Willie Starr is doing a grand slam on that game and Johnny Bench is at a free run homer.
- 1:12:09Doc Ellis and Wayne Simpson with the starting pitchers. Al McQueen and Clay Carroll are the relief pitchers.
- 1:12:16Al Ferrarra is up and the bull takes a hard slider outside ball one.
- 1:12:20Ferrarra struck out in the second.
- 1:12:30Ferrarra right hand pull hitter. He has good power.
- 1:12:35And Siever delivers a half swing.
- 1:12:38He held up in time and Siever says, wait a minute. Let's check this one out.
- 1:12:43Siever asking the plate umpire, Dick Stelos, when having some problems on the half swing.
- 1:12:48Now they check with the first base umpire.
- 1:12:53Al Bartlett and it is a strike.
- 1:12:56This is the second time in an inning that that's happened.
- 1:13:00Umpire frequently has trouble with that half swing. He gets blocked off.
- 1:13:04He'll check with his mates at first and third. Swing and a miss.
- 1:13:09Montreal got two in the first inning at Dodger Stadium tonight. The Expos lead the Dodgers 2-0.
- 1:13:15Arl Sutton pitching for Montreal and Don Sutton for the Dodgers.
- 1:13:20The Giants 1 and the Phillies nothing at the end of one. Bunning and Robertson are the pitchers.
- 1:13:26Grounder hit hard and fouled on the third base line. No play.
- 1:13:30At the age of 38, Jim Bunning is the oldest starting pitcher in the major leagues.
- 1:13:36There are relief pitchers a little bit older.
- 1:13:39Like old Sarge Hoyt Wilhelm who will be 47 years old in July.
- 1:13:44Don McMahon is 40.
- 1:13:52Down comes the pitch. Line drive caught by Joe Coy. Coy reaching over his head.
- 1:13:57Flags down the whistler.
- 1:14:00He watched nobody on. Metsley to nothing.
- 1:14:04Now Nate Colbert coming up.
- 1:14:07Rick Hall will reach 40 years old before the season is over.
- 1:14:12The American League and the state of the Yankees beat Milwaukee 63 and Mel Stoudelmeyer back in that good group won his second.
- 1:14:19Propped into the loser and Danny Weldon the surprise of the American League so far this year.
- 1:14:24Hit his eighth home run.
- 1:14:27One ball and no strikes.
- 1:14:29Danny Walton was with Houston.
- 1:14:32Late last year when the Astros were in the pinna drive they traded Walton to get Tommy Davis.
- 1:14:38Now Walton is off going great guns with Milwaukee.
- 1:14:43Low and outside. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:14:50Nate Colbert hitting the 213 but he certainly has been hitting for power.
- 1:14:54He has six home runs and 14 runs patted in.
- 1:14:58Towering pop foul hoping for a play.
- 1:15:01W. Dyer he has to push Stelow out of the way and it will land in the crowd no play.
- 1:15:06W. was having trouble getting around the play-off by Dick Stelow.
- 1:15:12Dave McNally won his fourth as the Orioles beat Minnesota 93.
- 1:15:15They turned back Dave Boswell.
- 1:15:17Cesar Tovar and Terry Crowley had home runs.
- 1:15:20Crowley the only new face in the championship oriole cast.
- 1:15:24He was Oakland 12 and Washington 500 the winner Cox the loser.
- 1:15:28Grounder foul.
- 1:15:32Red Sox with Ray Culp pitching a six hitter beat California 8 to 3.
- 1:15:38Carl Yastrowski had two home runs.
- 1:15:40George Scott and Reggie Smith each had one.
- 1:15:43Red Sox are having a good homestand.
- 1:15:48Now breaking ball just off the corner.
- 1:15:51Three balls and a strike to Nate Colbert.
- 1:15:54Two outs and nobody on.
- 1:15:55Last of the fourth inning and the Mets lead the Padres 2-0.
- 1:16:01And the pitch low and outside ball four.
- 1:16:05For Don Ciber the second one.
- 1:16:10That's about Tom's heart rate.
- 1:16:12It's about two a game.
- 1:16:15Ari Don Don Brown is having a good.
- 1:16:19Brown reached on an infield hit that deep short his first time about.
- 1:16:24In Kansas City it's Cleveland 7 Kansas City 5.
- 1:16:27They're going to the ninth inning.
- 1:16:30And the White Sox suddenly scoring runs.
- 1:16:34Lead Detroit 10 to 6 of the eighth inning.
- 1:16:38Swinging out a miss.
- 1:16:39A knee high fastball and what a cut he had at that.
- 1:16:47Two outs and one on.
- 1:16:52Olly Brown batting 254 tall rangey right hand hitter.
- 1:16:57Looks at a breaking ball low and away one ball and strike.
- 1:17:01Let's figure Ali has a power hitter and they play him a couple of steps toward left in the outfield.
- 1:17:07Here at San Diego Stadium is three thirty down the lines and three seventy in the power alleys.
- 1:17:14And the pitch.
- 1:17:15Swinging out a miss and a curve ball.
- 1:17:18They will tell you that here at San Diego Stadium that a ball hit.
- 1:17:23From the foul line to the marker and listener and right center carries very well.
- 1:17:29But a ball hit.
- 1:17:31The area straight away center field does not carry that well and has to be hit a ton.
- 1:17:38Now the pitch by Seabrook swing and he got him.
- 1:17:42Seabrook going with his fastball strikes out Ali Brown.
- 1:17:46Or Tom Seabrook strike out number six in four innings.
- 1:17:50No runs no hits no errors and one bat.
- 1:17:53At the end of four here at San Diego Stadium the New York match two and the San Diego Padres nothing.

- 1:19:18San Diego no runs one hit and no errors.
- 1:19:25Cleon over to tonight has bounced the first and was struck out.
- 1:19:32Right hander Santorini delivers off the outside corner ball one.
- 1:19:37Everybody traveling with the Mets talking mostly about the pitching on Nolan Ryan of late.
- 1:19:43He has certainly been sensational.
- 1:19:47Inside Ryan just a three hitter yesterday in San Francisco.
- 1:19:52Nolan Ryan has now started three games this year.
- 1:19:55He has missed a one hitter, a two hitter and a three hitter.
- 1:20:01High fly ball well hit the right field.
- 1:20:03Roll back back to Ali Brown near the wall and he's got it.
- 1:20:06Right to the wall at the 370 mark in right center.
- 1:20:12Number 24 Art Chamsky.
- 1:20:15Art has lined out the second and reached on an intentional one.
- 1:20:22Mets as the world champion certainly get their share of publicity and coverage not only in the newspapers but in the magazines.
- 1:20:31And not only in the sports magazines.
- 1:20:36This month for example Mr. Chamsky foul behind third and out of play.
- 1:20:42Both Art Chamsky and Tom Siever are featured on the cover of women's fashion magazines.
- 1:21:02Art a ball hitter the Padres swing around the right.
- 1:21:06Last year Art finished the season hitting an even 300.

- 1:21:33Paul Fowl a slow grounder down toward Yogi.
- 1:21:36A friend of Yogi invited him to go fishing while the Mets were out here in California and he was talking to Rube Walker about it.
- 1:21:42He said Rube you ever been seasick? Rube said yeah.
- 1:21:45Yogi said on water.
- 1:21:49One ball to strike.
- 1:21:53Yogi is certainly in demand every place the Mets go.
- 1:21:56Every time there's a sports luncheon where one of the first guys they try to get to show up as Yogi.
- 1:22:01Taking a high two and two.
- 1:22:05The public speaking although Yogi handles it very well it's not something he condones to he doesn't look forward to.
- 1:22:17The two to delivery to Shamsky look out Art he has to get his knee out of the way it's low inside three and two.
- 1:22:23It's all over in St. Louis the Astros bombarding the Cardinals tonight snapped their eight game losing streak.
- 1:22:30It was Houston nine St. Louis three Larry Durger a 20 game winner last year won his fourth game against two losses.
- 1:22:38Steve Carle didn't the loser.
- 1:22:40Lou Brack and Joe Pepitone had home runs.
- 1:22:43Foul on a ground ball down the first baseline.
- 1:22:46Pepitone is at five so far this year around although Jimmy Wynn does all right.
- 1:22:53Normally that Astrodome is not too good a place to hit a home runs nor is St. Louis where they played tonight.
- 1:23:03Three to delivery there is a drive in the air to right right out of the brown and he puts it away for the.
- 1:23:08The. Jones and the Shamsky have both hit the ball hard to right field and both have been retired.
- 1:23:16One of their final score in the American League it was played with seven Kansas City five.
- 1:23:22Kansas City led that game five three going to the eighth inning and the Indians came up with four runs in the eighth inning.
- 1:23:28Go ahead again picks up the win and relief and Mo Drabowski the loser and relief.
- 1:23:38One down has two for two and he's single with a basis loaded in the third driving in the only runs of the game.
- 1:23:44The Mets lead to nothing.
- 1:23:47I fly ball at the center field.
- 1:23:50This one should be easy for Clarence Gaston the center fielder he walks over and has it for the.
- 1:23:55No runs no hits no errors and none left on now in the middle of the fifth inning.
- 1:24:03The New York Mets to the San Diego Padres nothing.
- 1:24:07This is the story of Myron the car where Myron was a three thousand ninety eight pound weakling and other cars his age always bullied him.
- 1:24:16Myron be off the streets by sundown sometimes they even kick gravel in his face so long you hug a tin.
- 1:24:25Oh poor Myron tried everything to three four got to get cheap but alas poor Myron was the victim of engine deposits.
- 1:24:33Then one day his owner heard some good advice STP gas treatment you feel the difference.
- 1:24:39So he added STP gasoline treatment to Myron's gas tank and right away STP gas treatment went to work eliminating those power robbing deposits.
- 1:24:48STP gas treatment cleaned and tuned Myron's engine as he drove.
- 1:24:52In fact Myron felt the difference with the very first can.
- 1:24:56Hey bullies here's a little gravel back from that hunk of tin remember.
- 1:25:02STP gas treatment to your tank you'll feel the difference with the very first can.
- 1:25:17The bottom third of the San Diego batting order will hit against Tom Seaver in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:25:26It's Beasley Oh Chris Canisero and Al Santorini.
- 1:25:34Ali Brown has the only hit off time that was an infield hit the deep short back in the second.
- 1:25:41Just missed the outside corner one ball and no strikes.
- 1:25:46Tom has quite a rooting section of the stadium tonight of his old Marine Reserve buddies.
- 1:25:51Here's the pitch on the way swing and a miss.
- 1:25:54One ball one strike. Seaver pitching better than ever.
- 1:26:00He has such command of his pitches and himself.
- 1:26:05The one one delivery way off the outside corner two balls of the strike.
- 1:26:15Duffy Dyer working behind the plate Jerry Grote is back with the ball glove and in uniform and it's going to be probably several days before you'll be strong enough to play.
- 1:26:24Right over the center field back fiddling Tommy Agee he's under and has it for the off.
- 1:26:31All is straight away.
- 1:26:34One out and nobody on Chris Canisero the expat will be coming out.
- 1:26:41The Padres have Chris Canisero and Bob Parton as their backstop.
- 1:26:46And as one of the early members of the New York Mets.
- 1:26:51He has found a home here in San Diego he represented the Padres in the All-Star Game last year.
- 1:26:59Chris the right hand batter is a high five ball a fairly deep left backing up Leon Jones on the edge of the warning track.
- 1:27:06He's squeezed in for the second out.
- 1:27:11So to ask and nobody on now Al Santorini the Padres pitcher.
- 1:27:17Number 23 Padres have an array of impressive young players.
- 1:27:24Plus he believes in the general manager has been making moves trying to improve the defense to make the pitching even that much better.
- 1:27:33And it's low ball one they are very pleased with the deal they made with the Tigers to get second baseman Dave Campbell.
- 1:27:45It's the San Doria ground ball like the short knee high hop taken by Bud Harrelson and the accurate play to Clinton on the side goes down one two three.
- 1:27:55No runs no hits no errors and then left at the end of five innings here at San Diego Stadium.
- 1:28:02The New York Mets to the San Diego Padres nothing.

- 1:29:06Come on in and give them a try.
- 1:29:13Now here in San Diego the Padre ground crew has been out to manicure the diamond.
- 1:29:19The playing field is in excellent condition.
- 1:29:24They had their first postponement in San Diego Padre baseball history last night.
- 1:29:29Last Monday night the Padres were to play Montreal.
- 1:29:32It rained during the day and it was quite cold that night and the game was postponed because of rain, cold and wet grounds.
- 1:29:42About a day later the weather started to break and we have beautiful weather for this weekend's series.
- 1:29:47It is inning number six in San Diego. Mets leading two-nothing and describe the action for you Ralph Koenner.
- 1:29:53OK Bob Murphy and in the fourth period it's the Lakers seventy nine and the Knickerbockers seventy nine.
- 1:29:58First pitch to Joe Foy is over the outside corner called strike.
- 1:30:04Joe is over two in the ballgame struck out his last time on a curveball.
- 1:30:09Al Santorini on the mound for the Padres he has given up two runs allowed seven hits.
- 1:30:14Next pitch is in the dirt on by the catcher Canizarro and it's one ball and one strike.
- 1:30:21Santorini with an all-time record in the major leagues of nine wins and eighteen losses.
- 1:30:25Lifetime against the Mets he is one and one.
- 1:30:28He had the only victory for the Padres against the Mets last year in twelve ballgames.
- 1:30:36Now the pitch back and Foy hits a ground ball in the hole going over to his left Espisio to grab it.
- 1:30:41His first base is backhanded at first base by Nate Covert for the out.
- 1:30:47People who care don't litter people of Ryan Gold care.
- 1:30:51They ask you to keep America beautiful.
- 1:30:55That brings up Wayne Garrett Wayne is looking for a second and he's one for two in the ballgame.
- 1:31:04Wayne at a Texas Ligger in the left center field for his base and he's a left hand batter and a change up his high ball one.
- 1:31:12Garrett batting one seventy six and the pitch back the way and there's a breaking ball over called strike one and one.
- 1:31:33It's a Mets two of the Padres nothing. Next delivery low and they can't two balls and one strike one man on top of the sixth inning.
- 1:31:42First game of a four game series and the next delivery is inside backhanded by Ken Azzaro on the cat goes to three balls and one strike.
- 1:31:57Had a chance to chat with Jim Mulvaney the vice president of the San Diego Padres. He was the vice president of the Padres and they were in the Pacific Coast League.
- 1:32:07His baseball associations as Andy Frayn usher in Wrigley Field in Chicago.
- 1:32:12He's a fastball foul off in the cap three balls and two strikes. The principal owner of the San Diego Padres C. Arnold Smith.
- 1:32:28I got it for esports out of the
- 1:32:53principal owner of the San Diego Padres, C. Arnold Smith.
- 1:33:03And a three-two that fits to Garrett, high ball four and Wayne walks.
- 1:33:07That's the third walk given up by Al Santorini.
- 1:33:10As Garrett goes to first, we'll go out for a station identification.
- 1:33:13This is a New York Mets baseball network.
- 1:33:15This is your New York Mets baseball station in Saratoga Springs, New York.
- 1:33:19WKAJFM 102.3 on your dial.
- 1:33:30Ralph Carter along with Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson from San Diego, California.
- 1:33:34The Mets leading two to nothing.
- 1:33:35They have a runner at first base and the batter is Duffy Dyer.
- 1:33:39And Duffy takes a called strike on a curve ball, strike one.
- 1:33:42Duffy walked in the three-two pitches first time up.
- 1:33:44He's single off the pitchers bare hand.
- 1:33:47Up so he has been on twice.
- 1:33:49Dyer batting at two twenty-two.
- 1:33:52Right hand batter.
- 1:33:57Al Santorini back and the pitchers hit hard to the shortstop.
- 1:34:00A good set up for a double play before the second end time on the first double play.
- 1:34:04Second double play for the reason of all game is a goal from Steve Huggs to Dave Campbell and Nate Colbert.
- 1:34:10And every time is a side.
- 1:34:11No runs, no hits, no errors and no one left on.
- 1:34:14And in the middle of the sixth inning the New York Mets two, the San Diego Padres, nothing.
- 1:34:20If you're considering a new car but looking for some way to keep the cost down,
- 1:34:24how about the high cost of automobile financing?

- 1:35:18Sarah Tugler County's oldest bank, Ballston Spa National Bank.
- 1:35:22The bank that saves you money.
- 1:35:29Sixth inning with the Mets leading 2-0.
- 1:35:31Tom Sabre has given up only one hit in the ball game.
- 1:35:34A single by Ollie Brown that took a slightly bad hop.
- 1:35:39But Harrell's had gone in the hole in the backhand and couldn't hold on to the ball.
- 1:35:43If the ball had not taken that slight bad hop.
- 1:35:46I'm sure Bud could have feel the ball and thrown the man out at first.
- 1:35:51For the ball game they were talking about the fact the Pottery's have never been no-hitted.
- 1:35:56Is that a word?
- 1:35:59And Tom Sabre of course has never pitched a no-hitter.
- 1:36:02But he has no chance here tonight.
- 1:36:04The first pitch is outside the ball as Dave Campbell takes a fastball.
- 1:36:07Dave is 0-2.
- 1:36:09Brought an 8-game hitting streak into the ball game.
- 1:36:11And right at this point he's batting 2-99.
- 1:36:16The 1-0 pitch to the right hand batter has popped up back at home.
- 1:36:19Played out of play.
- 1:36:23It'll be Dave Campbell, Steve Hunts, and Clarence Gaston.
- 1:36:26The top of the batting order for Siever here in the sixth inning.
- 1:36:29Tom has struck out 6.
- 1:36:31He has walked 2.
- 1:36:37Siever with an overall win record of 61 wins.
- 1:36:41Next pitch a breaking ball that's low and inside.
- 1:36:45Two balls, one strike.
- 1:36:47Siever's record in his major league career, 61 wins, 32 losses.
- 1:36:54That is quite a ratio of wins over losses.
- 1:36:57Now 2-1 the pitch to Campbell's swung on and the count, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:37:04Against the Padres, Tom has won three and lost none.
- 1:37:08Lifetime.
- 1:37:13So three of the 25 wins Siever had last year.
- 1:37:17Chocked up against the new entry in the National League, the San Diego Padres.
- 1:37:21And a 2-2 the pitch to Campbell hit the center field.
- 1:37:24A.G. Holtz now moves back, has a lot of room.
- 1:37:27It's 4.20 to center and he makes the catch.
- 1:37:31One away in the bottom of the sixth inning and the batter coming up is Steve Hunts.
- 1:37:37Steve has no hits and two times up.
- 1:37:40He's fighting hole 67 with one hit and 15 times up this year.
- 1:37:45The one hit is a hit and a two.
- 1:37:48He's up this year. The one hit was a home run.
- 1:37:55He hit it in Cincinnati, right-handed, halfway up into the moon seats in Cincinnati in right field.
- 1:38:03Now the pitch as he switches and bats left-handed against Tom Siever is inside a ball.
- 1:38:18One ball and those strikes. Siever now back into the center and a deep drive to right.
- 1:38:24It's going, going and a long, long good-bye.
- 1:38:55Steve Hunts puts the Padres within one with his second base into the year and he now has two home runs on two hits for the year.
- 1:39:03That brings up Clarence Gaston in the first pitchers high off the glove with the catchers up a dire ball one.
- 1:39:15Hunts last year had three home runs playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:39:19There was no doubt about that one.
- 1:39:21One-oh pitch to Gaston swung on and missed one and one.
- 1:39:25Clarence has two home runs. He has ten runs batted in and a three-ten average.
- 1:39:34Hunts was in 71 ball games for the Cardinals and had three home runs in bat of 194 last year.
- 1:39:40The one-one pitch swung on and fouled back to count one and two.
- 1:39:53LA leading 91 to 87 against the Nicaraguan Bocchers with three and a half to go.
- 1:40:05And the one-two pitch, rounded foul.
- 1:40:10Sieber had Gaston fooled and he just did get a piece of the ball and knocked it down foul by home plate.
- 1:40:17So the count remains at one ball and two strikes.
- 1:40:28One and two.
- 1:40:29Sieber beats the Padres with his 19 strikeouts. He beat them two to one.
- 1:40:33Next delivery is outside.
- 1:40:35Sieber misses just off the plate around the knees two and two.
- 1:40:39Al Ferraro had a home run in that ball game.
- 1:40:46That's leading two to one. One man out, bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:40:50Next pitch is swung on and missed and Sieber gets his seventh strikeout.
- 1:40:53That gives him two men away here in the sixth inning.
- 1:40:57And a breeze up by Al Ferraro.
- 1:41:06Al was struck out his first time up.
- 1:41:10The next time up he was robbed of an extra base hit on a great play by Joel Foy at third on the line drive.
- 1:41:18Al Foy, a right hand batter.
- 1:41:23Sieber double pumps and the first pitch is a slider outside the ball.
- 1:41:33When Sieber struck out the 19 batters against the Padres, he threw 136 pitches.
- 1:41:39The one-oh pitch swung on and missed one and one.
- 1:41:44Al Foy was struck out in that ball game as the first man of 10 consecutive strikeouts and the last man of the 10.
- 1:41:59The one-one pitch. It is on the outside corner called strike two.
- 1:42:05The catcher is hit.
- 1:42:13Signs go out, Duffy Dyer the catcher and Sieber into the wind up.
- 1:42:17And the next pitch a half swing and the Mets are asking what it was.
- 1:42:22And Sieber wants the first base umpire to give some help on the play to Dick Settle.
- 1:42:27Settle has yet to look the first, now he does and Al Foy said no he did not swing.
- 1:42:33So Sieber does not get that one and the count goes to two and two.
- 1:42:40Pahara checked just in time.
- 1:42:45We've had two strikeouts called by the base umpire.
- 1:42:48Next pitch is swung on and fouled back. Pahara with a hard swing and a high fastball.
- 1:42:53Now remaining at two balls and two strikes.
- 1:42:57Pahara has had two home runs this year and two runs batted in with nine hits.
- 1:43:06He's batting two 14.
- 1:43:10And Sieber tries again and the pitch to Pahara is swung on and missed and he gets it.
- 1:43:15Eighth strikeout for Tom Sieber in the ball game. He retires the side.
- 1:43:19In the inning one run and the home run by Steve Hunt.
- 1:43:23The only hit, no errors and no one up on base and the score at the end is six.
- 1:43:27New York Mets two, the San Diego Padres one.

- 1:44:43We're coming your way from San Diego which has become Guadalupe City.
- 1:44:48That's a leading by a score of 2 to 1 as they bat in the top of the seventh.
- 1:44:52The first batter is Tom Siever the pitcher Al Saterini and the first pitch is a curveball over at Ball Strike.
- 1:44:58In about the last nine years San Diego has changed from a resort country town to a major city.
- 1:45:09The 2-1 pitch swung on and missed and the cat at strike two.
- 1:45:18And of course one of the implements that they have been very happy about the acquisition of major football and major baseball.
- 1:45:27San Diego Chargers playing here along with the San Diego Padres.
- 1:45:31The next delivery is outside and the count at one ball and two strikes.
- 1:45:39San Diego located just about 125 miles south of Los Angeles.
- 1:45:44The next delivery has swung on and this receiver is struck out.
- 1:45:48And Arede getting his fourth strike out of the ballgame.
- 1:45:52And with one man away Tommy Agee comes up.
- 1:45:56Number 20 Tommy Agee.
- 1:45:59Tommy has a base hit and three times up and a run score.
- 1:46:02The base hit kept his hitting streak going.
- 1:46:05He now has hit in 12 consecutive games.
- 1:46:07The med record is 18 set by Frank Thomas.
- 1:46:11Tommy last year along with Leon Jones had an 11 consecutive games.
- 1:46:15Longer streak for the Mets last year.
- 1:46:17And the first pitch is hit foul over into the stands out of play.
- 1:46:23Agee with his 12 game streak batting now at 230 with two home runs and four runs batted in.
- 1:46:30Mets two runs, seven hits, no errors.
- 1:46:33The Padres one run, two hits and no errors.
- 1:46:38One man out top of the seventh inning.
- 1:46:49And now the right hander is one strike delivery a change up in the dirt.
- 1:46:53He goes on by Canazaro the catcher one and one.
- 1:47:05Santorini is one and three this year.
- 1:47:09He has always pitched well against the Mets and the next pitch is grounded foul.
- 1:47:14Count goes one and two.
- 1:47:23Al is in Union, New Jersey.
- 1:47:256'1", 185 pounds.
- 1:47:31He has a birthday this month.
- 1:47:34Making 22.
- 1:47:35Here's the next delivery and the fastball is under the chin of Agee.
- 1:47:38Backs him away, it's two and two.
- 1:47:47And the right hander checks out the signs and the next pitch.
- 1:47:52It is low on the full count, three and two.
- 1:47:57On deck batter Bud Harrelson for the Mets.
- 1:48:06The three-two pitch to Agee.
- 1:48:09Swung on and missed.
- 1:48:10Santorini has struck out two in a row as fourth and fifth in the ballgame.
- 1:48:15And that brings up Bud Harrelson.
- 1:48:19Bud has singled and doubled and was robbed of a base hit by a fine play by Dave Campbell in his three trips to the plate.
- 1:48:28Bud now is hit in 18 of the 20 games he has played in.
- 1:48:31He has played in every game for the Mets, the only player to do so.
- 1:48:35And he's batting 321.
- 1:48:37And they shift the outfield on him.
- 1:48:40First pitch is outside of ball.
- 1:48:42Boudreau's had been playing him as the other teams all did last year.
- 1:48:46Shifting way over as though he were a right hand batter against a right hand pitcher.
- 1:48:49Now they have shifted the outfield straight away.
- 1:48:52He crossed him up three times his first three times up.
- 1:48:54And the next pitch is in for a foul strike.
- 1:48:56It's one and one.
- 1:49:02Center fielder is straight away.
- 1:49:04Left fielder a shade toward the line but almost straight away.
- 1:49:07Next pitch is popped up out towards second base.
- 1:49:10Dave Campbell the second baseman coming in.
- 1:49:12Also there is Spezio.
- 1:49:14Spezio makes a catch as Campbell runs into him.
- 1:49:16But Spezio holds onto the ball on the side as retired in order.
- 1:49:21And the score in the middle of the seventh inning.

- 1:50:34The Mets leading 2-1, and the Padres have their big home run hitter coming up,
- 1:50:39the lead off against Tom Siever.
- 1:50:41Siever has held the Padres with two hits,
- 1:50:44an armless single and a not-so-armless home run.
- 1:50:49The single was off the glove of Bud Halston.
- 1:50:51The home run was by Steve Hunt, so it went into the right field.
- 1:50:54Bleacher.
- 1:50:59And the first pitch to Colbert is fouled back into the stands, and a play.
- 1:51:02Colbert has had six home runs this year, and he has driven in 14.
- 1:51:07Against Tom Siever, he has fought out the left field and walked.
- 1:51:12Right hand batter.
- 1:51:15He'll be followed by Ollie Brown and Ed Spizio.
- 1:51:20And Siever into the windup and the one-strike delivery.
- 1:51:29A check swing that fits just off the plate.
- 1:51:31Siever missing with a slider.
- 1:51:33One ball, one strike.
- 1:51:42Dave Roberts is warming up in the bullpen now for the Padres, the left-hander.
- 1:51:46Next pitch is ball two, and it's two and one.
- 1:51:53Left-hander Dave Roberts.
- 1:51:57Two-one delivery.
- 1:51:59It is outside, ball three, and Siever falls behind three and one.
- 1:52:06Colbert is batting in the fifth batting...
- 1:52:11Army position.
- 1:52:14The next delivery is popped up, and it looks like it could be a chance for Duffy Dyer as he comes back into foul territory.
- 1:52:20He is under the wall, and he makes the catch.
- 1:52:25So Siever getting the three-one pitch in and picking up an out.
- 1:52:33Now Ollie Brown coming in.
- 1:52:35Ollie got the first hit of the ball game off Siever when he hit one deep in the hole at shortstop.
- 1:52:42Second time up, he was struck out.
- 1:52:46Ollie Brown led the Padres in the major hitting departments last year.
- 1:52:51He was acquired from San Francisco.
- 1:52:54He had 20 home runs, 61 runs batted in, and batted 264 last year for the Padres.
- 1:53:00And the right-hand batter was almost hit by the pitch as he backed out of the way.
- 1:53:06It's ball one.
- 1:53:08And it's indicated the ball hit the bat, so it's strike one.
- 1:53:14Home plate umpire Dick Sello making the sign that it was a foul chip.
- 1:53:18That pitch was way inside and high.
- 1:53:21Next pitch is high and outside.
- 1:53:24Scoreboard has a count at two balls and no strikes.
- 1:53:27We'll check for sure and see if it's that or one and one.
- 1:53:31Sello has not given the indicating signs with his hands.
- 1:53:36Next pitch is fouled back and ball goes out of play.
- 1:53:52Brown a big strong right-hand hitter.
- 1:53:55Next delivery is in there and it's a strike call.
- 1:54:00And evidently the scoreboard was right.
- 1:54:02So they counted two balls and two strikes.
- 1:54:13Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:54:14Siever back.
- 1:54:15And a high fly ball to deep left field.
- 1:54:18Klon Jones on the warning track.
- 1:54:20He has room and he makes the catch right in the left corner of the playing field.
- 1:54:27Long high fly and Siever gets his second out here in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:54:31Met bleeding by one and it brings up Ed Spizio.
- 1:54:38Ed has walked in line to center field batting at 2-12 with one home run and three runs batted in.
- 1:54:46Right hand batter.
- 1:54:49Spizio had 13 home runs for the Padres last year.
- 1:54:53And he takes a slider over the outside corner, a call strike.
- 1:55:01Siever back and one strike pitch is popped out in the right center field.
- 1:55:06It'll be a base hit.
- 1:55:07Ed Spizio over the field a ball.
- 1:55:09Gathers it in and Spizio stays at first.
- 1:55:13Looping line drive toward right center field and the Padres have their third into the ballgame.
- 1:55:18And they also have the time run at first base with the catcher Chris Canazaro coming up.
- 1:55:29That's about hit the Padres 7-3 as they lead 2-1.
- 1:55:33Canazaro is 0-2 in this game.
- 1:55:47Canazaro has a 2-45 average.
- 1:55:50He has no home runs.
- 1:55:51Has driven in six.
- 1:55:53He has been struck out and he has swung out the left.
- 1:55:59And Siever working from the set position.
- 1:56:03The first pitch.
- 1:56:05Low for ball.
- 1:56:0899-99.
- 1:56:11The Lakers and the Knickelbockers starting in the overtime period.
- 1:56:21And the next delivery.
- 1:56:23Line to left field.
- 1:56:25Point over three on Jones to head it off.
- 1:56:27He feels the ball.
- 1:56:28Spizio goes to second base, makes a big turn and holds there.
- 1:56:32Canazaro keeps it going.
- 1:56:34And we're going to have a pinch runner for him.
- 1:56:36Ron Slotcom has gone in.
- 1:56:38And we're also going to have a pinch hitter for the pitcher, Al Santorini.
- 1:56:42It is Ramon Webster batting for the pitcher, Al Santorini.
- 1:56:46So Siever for the first time in the ball game.
- 1:56:49With consecutive hits against him.
- 1:56:52Back to back singles with two men out.
- 1:56:55The ball was well hit by Chris Canazaro.
- 1:56:59Leon had to get over in a hurry near the foul line to keep it from going on through.
- 1:57:03Now a conference at the mound and Rube Walker talking with Tom Siever, Duffy Dyer.
- 1:57:11Shortstop Bud Harrelson and the first baseman Don Fendena.
- 1:57:1512-1, Walker.
- 1:57:19So the time run is at second base.
- 1:57:29Go ahead right at first with two men out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:57:34And Rube Walker, the pitching coach, now back to the bench.
- 1:57:44Daniel Webster has been up 15 times with three hits.
- 1:57:49One of them an extra base hit, a double.
- 1:57:51He has driven in one run.
- 1:57:55He's a left hand batter.
- 1:58:03Oh the crowd here at the last 20,000.
- 1:58:06Trying to keep the rally going for the San Diego Padres as a match battled the Padres for the first time in Southern California.
- 1:58:14In New York they split one and one with them in the two games they played there.
- 1:58:19Siever sets.
- 1:58:21And the pitch to Webster.
- 1:58:23Foul back against the screen, strike one.
- 1:58:32Ramon Webster batting for the pitcher Al Santorini.
- 1:58:41Now Siever sets, checks at second base, comes back to the plate.
- 1:58:44The ball is away from Dyer and Fisio did not see it immediately and could not move up.
- 1:58:51Dyer momentarily could not find it.
- 1:58:53It rolled about 20 feet away, maybe 30.
- 1:58:56And Fisio breaking back toward second, took himself out of a chance to move on over.
- 1:59:04Cal Coons is now loosening up for the Mets in their bullpen.
- 1:59:13Siever set to go.
- 1:59:15Lay on at second and Bud Harrelson takes the throw, puts the tag on, but it's not in time.
- 1:59:22Fisio just barely got back in.
- 1:59:24Quick play put on by the roomies Tom Siever and Bud Harrelson.
- 1:59:33Siever last year picked out one of the great baserunners and a very crucial point.
- 1:59:38Picked out Hank Aaron.
- 1:59:41Helped him win a ball game.
- 1:59:43One ball, one strike.
- 1:59:45Siever to the plate.
- 1:59:46And the pitch again is bowed back against the screen and Siever with a counted one and two.
- 1:59:59One ball, two strikes, Duffy Dyer goes out to talk with Tom about his sequence of pitching now.
- 2:00:07After getting two men out, Ed Fisio single the right center.
- 2:00:10He moved down to second on a line drive single by Chris Cannazero.
- 2:00:15Ron Slocum went in the run for Chris and with the pitcher coming up, Daniel Webster was put up to pinch hit.
- 2:00:26Good savory, Martin Webster getting my literature mixed up.
- 2:00:34Now Siever in the set position.
- 2:00:38And the one-two pitch popped out to third base and Joe Foy has an easy chance.
- 2:00:43He makes the catch and foul territory and Siever pitches out of the jam.
- 2:00:47In the inning, no runs, two hits, no errors, two men left on.
- 2:00:51And the score at the end of seven, the New York Mets two, San Diego Padres one.
- 2:01:01You know there just doesn't seem to be time left anymore to make something by hand.
- 2:01:05The way things are going by the year 2000, a simple little hand-made thing will end up in the Smithsonian Institute.
- 2:01:11Worth a fortune, priceless.
- 2:01:13We need progress, computers, automation and all that.
- 2:01:17And we'll find a way to live with the push-button world.
- 2:01:20But you have to know where to draw the line, where to kick the machines out and keep the people in.
- 2:01:26We feel that a computer will never make a good glass of beer.
- 2:01:29Because when all is said and done, computers have no taste.
- 2:01:37Rheingold will always take the time to make beer in a natural way.
- 2:01:41With people, with natural ingredients, with natural carbonation and with a good extra dry natural taste.
- 2:01:48We'll take the time to save a good glass of beer.
- 2:01:51Natural Rheingold.
- 2:01:54Rheingold Breweries, Inc., New York, New York and Orange, New Jersey ask you to help keep America beautiful.
- 2:02:06Here in San Diego, a new innovation has been provided.
- 2:02:10They brought the relief pitcher into the pitching area and a dooms buggy.
- 2:02:14And I can think of a lot of people, Lindsay Nelson, that would call that a dooms-buddy.
- 2:02:19Yeah, not only that, it's tiger striped. It'll get your attention.
- 2:02:24Dave Roberts is coming to do the pitching now and we'll have a new catcher who is down in Greigalia right now and it's going to be Slocum, I believe.
- 2:02:33It'll be Slocum who appeared as a pitch runner. So Ron Slocum bats number 8 in the order, keeping a scorecard.
- 2:02:40Number 12, Ron Slocum.
- 2:02:43And Dave Roberts is the pitcher batting number 9.
- 2:02:49Roberts is making his eighth appearance of this season. He had one start.
- 2:02:55He has a record of one win and two losses. He appeared against the Mets at Chase Stadium on April 22nd in relief for one inning.
- 2:03:03He allowed no runs, no hits. That was the game won by Tom Siebert, 2-1, when he struck out the 19 batters.
- 2:03:10The lone start for Roberts was at Houston. He was the loser 4-1. He worked the first six innings, gave us two runs on five hits.
- 2:03:26The Mets are up on the top of the eighth. Cleon Jones has gone 0-3.
- 2:03:33Dave Roberts is a left-hand pitcher. And here is ball one high.
- 2:03:41Ron Swabota has moved out on deck to bat for Art Shamsky in a Gil Hodges righty-lefty move.
- 2:03:491-0 now to Cleon Jones. Swung on and fouled off. It's 0-2.
- 2:04:06Jones measures the stance. There's nobody on. There's nobody out. Jones leading off here in the eighth.
- 2:04:12Here's a pitch low. So it's 2-1. Al Santorini, pitch seven innings, gave up two runs on seven hits.
- 2:04:20He struck out five and walked three, one of them intentionally.
- 2:04:27This pitch is low.
- 2:04:34Roberts kicks at the rubber a couple of times. Outfield is shaded around the left against Cleon Jones.
- 2:04:43Now the pitch. Swung on and missed. It's out full at 3-2 down at Cleon.
- 2:04:57Roberts takes the sign from Ron Slocum for the payoff pitch.
- 2:05:07Still getting it and Jones steps out at the plate.
- 2:05:12Gets a handful of dirt. Cleon's average for the season is down to 2-31.
- 2:05:21Payoff pitch. It in the air to center field and Clarence Johnson ranges back but has it lined up and makes the catch.
- 2:05:30We pass the station identification. This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 2:05:34You're listening to New York Mets baseball on WKAJ FM 102.3 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the home of the New York Mets.
- 2:05:46This is Lindsey Nelson with Ralph Cannon and Bob Murphy in San Diego, California where Ron Swaboda is batting for Ari Chamsky.
- 2:05:53One man out, nobody on base. The Mets are leading the Padres by a score of 2-1.
- 2:06:03And the pitch is low for ball.
- 2:06:08From Dunn and it is on deck. Gil Hodge simply went to his right hand batter when the Padres switched to a left hand pitcher.
- 2:06:17It's low for ball.
- 2:06:30Single game here tomorrow afternoon and a double header here on Sunday between the Mets and Padres.
- 2:06:36Two-hole delivery hit on the ground for a second. Dave Campbell up, lays it to first in time and Swaboda is out.
- 2:06:45Throw away. Next time you buy a blade, ask for a Gillette Platinum Plus.

- 2:06:59Platinum Plus.
- 2:07:06Don Klandunen is 2 for 3. He's driven in two runs. He has batted in 13 runs to lead the Mets in that department this season.

- 2:07:52It's no runs, no hits, no errors, man left. In the middle of the eighth inning the score is the Mets 2 and the San Diego Padres 1.

- 2:08:12We call our two-fisted hamburger Big Mac. Two 100% beef hamburgers. Lettuce, cheese, pickles and McDonald's own special sauce.
- 2:08:23Big Mac, the meal disguised as a sandwich. At McDonald's, your kind of place.
- 2:08:34Remember when you were a kid how you hated to wait and now sometimes you can't afford to wait, especially if you want to get back to work. McDonald's understands.
- 2:08:43When you step up to our counter and order a Big Mac, Coke and French fries, you get them in a hurry.

- 2:10:25They're at home over here and Johnny Bench had a three run homer for Cincinnati. That's number six for Johnny Bench. Here's a one-two pitch to Campbell.
- 2:10:32Foul back and out of play. So there's a little more on the line here now in this ballgame than there was.
- 2:10:39If the New York Mets can win it, they'll be in a second place tie in the Eastern Division with the Pittsburgh Parrots.
- 2:10:47Two and a half games back of the division leading Cubs. Here's a pitch outside for a ball. So it's 2-2.

- 2:20:17Jerry Grote has rejoined the Mets having been hospitalized in Los Angeles since the first day of this trip.
- 2:20:23But Grote is not yet in shape for duty.
- 2:20:29Duffy Dyer has been handling all the catching on this road trip.
- 2:20:34This is in for a call strike.
- 2:20:40The Mets will be at Chase Stadium in New York on Tuesday night against the Dodgers.
- 2:20:46That's low for a ball. It's one and one.
- 2:20:49The Dodgers will be in New York for three consecutive night games and they're followed in by the Giants.
- 2:20:56They'll open up a series on Friday night. That's a weekend set.
- 2:21:01One on one pitch. Swung on. It in the air to center field and Clarence Gaston goes back.
- 2:21:06But there's a lot of room out there and he makes the catch near the edge of the warning track.
- 2:21:10The ball is at more than 400 feet. It's 420 to the wall out there.
- 2:21:14The shot's out in order. No runs, no hits, no overs, no left.
- 2:21:19And in the middle of the ninth inning, the score is the Mets 2 the Padres 1.

- 2:22:28We now return to New York Mets Baseball.
- 2:22:31In San Diego, California, it's the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:22:35The New York Mets are leading the Padres by a score of 2-1.
- 2:22:39Tom Sievers on the mound for the Mets.
- 2:22:41A round one run, a homer by Steve Hunt on only four hits.
- 2:22:45He has struck out nine and walked two.
- 2:22:48Al Ferraro is up and here's the pitch.
- 2:22:50Mrs. Lohan away and it's ball one.
- 2:22:55Action continuing in the bullpen for the New York Mets.
- 2:23:02Nate Colbert is on deck.
- 2:23:05It's Cal Cooch throwing down there.
- 2:23:07Swing the foul ball back over the screen into the stands behind home plate.
- 2:23:11And it's one and one.
- 2:23:13Ferraro has struck out, lined the third and struck out here tonight.
- 2:23:18His average for the season is 2-0-9.
- 2:23:22Sievers takes the sign from Duffy Dyer and here is the 1-1 pitch.
- 2:23:27Outside for the ball. It's 2-1.
- 2:23:36Ferraro taking a little walk around.
- 2:23:40Now coming back into the batter's box and Sievers ready to work.
- 2:23:43The pitch is on the way and it's foul back out of play.
- 2:23:46Two balls, two strikes to Al Ferraro.
- 2:23:52Unfired excello moves around to brush off the plate.
- 2:23:56Ferraro still outside the batter's box.
- 2:24:01Sievers ready whenever Ferraro is.
- 2:24:05He's back in and waiting now and here is Sievers' pitch.
- 2:24:082-2 on the way.
- 2:24:09Little high. The count runs full at 3-2.
- 2:24:13So when you have a one-run lead, the thing you do not want to do is put the leadoff batter on.
- 2:24:20Sievers faced with the prospect of a 3-2 pitch here.
- 2:24:27The playoff pitch.
- 2:24:29He walked in high and tight.
- 2:24:34That is the third walk issued in this game.
- 2:24:37We're going to get a pitch runner coming in here now.
- 2:24:40Jose Arcea is going to run for Ferraro.
- 2:24:43Arcea will run for Ferraro. That is the potential tying run.
- 2:24:54Nate Cobart coming up.
- 2:25:02Nate Cobart has tried to left walk and found out to the catcher.
- 2:25:07He's had six home runs and that's her leading 2-1.
- 2:25:11Playing and a miss. That's strike one.
- 2:25:15Waiting on deck is Ali Brown. There is nobody out.
- 2:25:20Cobart takes a look down to Seinman. Bob Skinner at third.
- 2:25:24Lindon and Holes against the runner. Jose Arcea at first base.
- 2:25:29Sievers off the stretch and here's the pitch.
- 2:25:32It's hung on and missed. Strike two to Cobart.
- 2:25:41That's got two runs in the third inning.
- 2:25:43The Padres got one in the sixth and that's all the scoring we've had.
- 2:25:51Two strike delivery.
- 2:25:52The miss is outside.
- 2:25:54It goes to one ball and two strikes. The right hand batting Nate Cobart batting number five.
- 2:25:59And the San Diego batting order.
- 2:26:08Sievers checks the runner over his left shoulder.
- 2:26:12Arcea is taking the lead. One two pitch.
- 2:26:14Hung on and missed. Strike out number ten for Tom Sievers.
- 2:26:18Well, Lindsay, I can just hear the technical analyzers of baseball saying when you're the home team in the bottom of the ninth inning you play to tie and how come they didn't sacrifice in that spot?
- 2:26:29Well, that's what the foot says. That's true.
- 2:26:32I'm sure what the Padres had in mind was they had a fellow up there who had had six home runs and they were hoping he could get a hold of one and win a ballgame for them in the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:26:42Olly Brown is up now. He's had an infield hit, struck out and fly to left.
- 2:26:48It misses the outside corner and it's ball one to Brown. Just one man up.
- 2:26:51Some of the big differences with ball clubs is the fact that in this case they don't have the kind of a ball club to sustain singles in order.
- 2:26:59And I'm sure that's what Preston Gomez was thinking about. He had his big home run hitter up there and he was hoping he could come through.
- 2:27:05The pitcher on the ground is short. Could be a game ending double play. It has won for the first pitch out over. A double play from Harrison to Wayne Jarrett to Don Glenn Bennett.
- 2:27:15It was a high hopping ground ball. Taylor May for a double play to shortstop but Harrison and the New York Mets have their victory.
- 2:27:23Tom Seaver has his fifth victory. He's one of the other five game winners in the majors.
- 2:27:29And that's Jim Merritt of the Cincinnati Reds. The New York Mets are tied for second place in the Eastern Division of the National League tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:27:40Two and one half games behind the division leading Chicago Cubs.
- 2:27:45In the ninth inning. No runs, no hits, no as a walk and none left.
- 2:27:51We'll be back in a moment with a final summary in totals. Right now the final score of the game is the Mets 2 and the Padres 1.
- 2:28:03The finest in Italian cuisine and a wide array of steaks, chops and seafood awaits your dining pleasure at Mangino's Restaurant located in the south end of Saratoga Lake.
- 2:28:14But there's a big difference between just ordinary Italian or American cuisine and Mangino's fine foods. At Mangino's your order is never prepared hours before.
- 2:28:24Mangino's realize that good food cannot be heard and they ask you to give them a little time to prepare it properly.
- 2:28:30All dishes are prepared to your order when your order is placed never before and it hasn't been simmering away for hours or minutes.
- 2:28:38And that's the big difference at Mangino's. Why not enjoy eating Italian food the way it should be savored and done at Mangino's Restaurant located in the south end of Saratoga Lake on Route 9P just two miles from Route 9.
- 2:28:51A complete line of Italian specialties are served to tempt the palate and their steaks and chops and seafood are equally as delightful.
- 2:28:58Mangino's Restaurant, the home of truly fine foods, Route 9P, the south end of Saratoga Lake.
- 2:29:10The New York Mets have won the first game of this four game series from the San Diego Padres by a score of 2 to 1.
- 2:29:16To tell you something of how they did it, here's Ralph Kiner.
- 2:29:19Well they say that Southern California and especially the San Diego area is a nice place to visit and for the New York Mets it has been over the last two years.
- 2:29:26They have yet to lose a ballgame here having won six out of six and now having won one out of one in the 1970 season.
- 2:29:33It wasn't easy. The Padres gave a real battle and the Mets were shut out from the fourth inning on without a base hit.
- 2:29:42In fact they did not leave a man on base after the fourth inning.
- 2:29:46So in the ballgame the Mets got their two runs in the third.
- 2:29:49Bit of strategy in the ballgame and it did not work for the San Diego Padres.
- 2:29:54Leading off the start of the inning was Tommy Agee and he singled to center field to extend his hitting streak to 12 consecutive ballgames.
- 2:30:01Bud Harrelson then doubled against an over-shifted outfield.
- 2:30:05An outfield shifted toward the way they played last year in 1969 and the double went in the right center field and that put Tommy Agee at third.
- 2:30:13Mets with runners at second and third and no one out.
- 2:30:15Leon Jones was struck out but then Art Shamsky was won figuring that Shamsky a left hand batter against the right hand starting pitcher Al Santorini would be a bigger risk than in pitching to the right hand batter Don Clendenin who followed.
- 2:30:30Don has been the hottest hitter for the Mets over the past few ballgames and he came through with a single to center field to drive in the two runs that the Mets had in the ballgame.
- 2:30:40Padres didn't do much with Tom Siever they got a infield base hit in the second the only one through the first five innings but in the sixth inning with one away Steve Hunt got his second home run of the season.
- 2:30:52It was his second base hit of the season and the home run was the right field to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
- 2:30:57Siever struggled through the seventh inning.
- 2:30:59He gave up two singles with two men out but then got pinch hitter Raymond Webster to foul out.
- 2:31:05In the eighth inning he worked one two three and then in the ninth inning he put the time run on.
- 2:31:10That was Al Farrar who walked in the three two pitch.
- 2:31:12Nate Colbert did not bunt and he was struck out and then Olly Brown hit into a double play and the Mets won the ballgame by a score of two to one.
- 2:31:20We'll be back with more about the Mets in just one moment.
