- 0:00SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you could be with us as we celebrate Good Friday together.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, when um when it comes to evenings like this, I I still find myself getting so nervous, which seems kind of silly.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: I could talk about Leviticus for forever, but the the weight of these evenings um pulls on me because of what they represent.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: And so uh if you don't mind, I'm gonna go ahead and open us with prayer, and then we'll move forward with the service.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Would you bow your heads with me?
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Heavenly Father, we we thank you for today, and uh, Lord, we come before you, your servants, humble at what we are thinking about, the death of Jesus Christ.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: And um God, I ask that you might help us in our time together to be led by your Spirit as we consider our sin and reflect on your love and appreciate the death of our Savior.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Father, um that tomb that was filled and had the stone rolled over it, God, represents salvation for humanity, and that is not lost on me.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: And so, God, I ask that uh you would bless our time together and that you might be glorified in what we say and do.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: It's in Jesus' name we pray.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Well, there are um there are a couple things I'd I'd like to do with you this evening.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: The first one is uh is the most straightforward, which is uh we're going to read, or rather, I'm going to read Matthew 27 almost in its entirety.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: The um explanation, the account of Jesus' death, um basically from his arrest until the tomb, something we'll go over because it's God's word revealed to us, and it is far better than anything that I could ever come up with.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: After that, um I've got a few thoughts about the text, ways in which I think we can sort of take these two ideas, um, one of them being the depth of our sin and a consideration of that sin, the effects of that sin.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: And the second one, contrasting it, being the depth of God's love despite our sin.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I think if we can bring these two things together, it it can propel us forward into a greater appreciation for the death of Jesus, which is why we are here.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: This is not Easter as of yet.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Tonight we are looking at a closed tomb and what that tomb represents, namely the death of God Himself.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to read, if you'd like to follow along, I'm going to be in uh Matthew chapter 27.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And um I'm reading out of the CSB.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Up to this point, Jesus has had the Last Supper.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Um, he's met with his disciples, and then they went to the garden, at which point every single one of the disciples deserted him or fell asleep while he was praying.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Jesus himself, knowing the moment that was coming, then sees Judas enter in through the garden with troops behind him, and comes up to Jesus with a greeting and kisses him on the cheek, a sign to those who are going to arrest him.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: And Jesus says, Do what you came to do, friend.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: So we pick up, Jesus has been detained, and it's the following morning, it's Friday morning.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: After tying him up, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was full of remorse, and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: I've sinned by betraying innocent blood, he said.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: What's that to us?
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: They said.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: See to it yourself.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: So he threw the silver into the temple and departed.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Then he went and hanged himself.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: The chief priests took the silver and said, It's not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: They conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Therefore that field has been called blood field to this day.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites, and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Now Jesus stood before the governor.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Are you the king of the Jews?
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: The governor asked him.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Jesus answered, You say so.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: While he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he didn't answer.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Then Pilate said to him, Don't you hear how much they are testifying against you?
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: But he didn't answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: At the festival, the governor's custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: At that time they had a notorious prisoner prisoner called Barabbas.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, Who is it you want me to release for you?
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Barabbas or Jesus, who is called Christ?
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: While he was sitting on the judge's bench, his wife sent word to him, Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I've suffered terribly in a dream because of him.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: The governor asked them, Which of the two do you want me to release to you?
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Barabbas, they answered.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Pilate asked them, Who what should I do then with Jesus who is called Christ?
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: They all answered, Crucify him.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Then he said, Why?
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: What has he done wrong?
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: But they kept shouting all the more, Crucify him.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, I am innocent of this man's blood.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: See to it yourselves.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: All the people answered, His blood be on us and on our children.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Then he released Barabbas to them, and, after having Jesus flogged, handed him over to be crucified.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's residence and gathered the whole commute company around him.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: They stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: And they knelt down before him and mocked him.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Hail, King of the Jews.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: They forced him to carry the cross.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means place of the skull, they gave him wine mixed with gall to drink, but when he tasted it he refused to drink it.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: After crucifying him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Then they sat down and were guarding him there.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Above his head they put up the charge against him in writing, This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Then two criminals were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, and said, He saved others, but he cannot save himself.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: He is the king of Israel.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: He trusts in God.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Let God rescue him now, if he takes pleasure in him, for he said, I am the Son of God.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with him taunted him.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: From noon until three in the afternoon, darkness came over the whole land.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, Lama Sabactini, that is, My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: When some of those standing there heard this, they said, He's calling for Elijah.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a stick, and offered him a drink.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: But the rest said, Let's see if Elijah comes to save him.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Suddenly the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earthquaked, and the rocks were split.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: The tombs were also opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: When the centurion, those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and looked after him were there, watching from a distance.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Then Pilate ordered that it be released.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: I think that is a good point for us to end this evening's reading because that is where we stand.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: We are with Mary and Mary looking at the sealed tomb.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: We know what comes next, as Christians.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: We know that there is great joy in the resurrection of Christ.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: But tonight the purpose is that we just consider the death of Jesus.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: And what's so striking about the death of Jesus is that it goes against basically every preconceived notion for what greatness should look like, because we have one who came declaring that he was going to change the world and then was killed.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: The ideas of everybody around him was that something else was going to happen.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: We know he had something else in mind, and Jesus was no victim by any stretch of the imagination.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: He willingly went to the cross.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: But our culture loves to lift up the triumph.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: And so that is why the death of Jesus is so beautiful in its own right, because it shows that our God Himself humbled his position to that of death.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: To that of death.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: When we look at the cross, it is so easy for us to separate our lives from what we just read.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: It is so easy for us to take everything that is represented by Jesus in the cross and to distill it down into this idea that just becomes a fact of our faith.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: It's not a part of our daily life.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: It's not something that changes us.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: It's not something that rests within us and influences our faith.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: It is just a fact that we believe so that we might be saved.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And yet Good Friday points us to the truth that our sin is what put Jesus on the cross.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: My first question this evening is: do you consider your sin, the cost of your sin?
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: And it's an uncomfortable place to go because we don't like talking about how messed up we truly are.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: But every single part of our lives, our daily sin, our rebellion, our choices to walk against God and rebel against him and to consistently go our own way instead of his, these are the things that nailed Jesus to the cross.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: These are the things that put him up there.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Our daily rebellion against the creator of the universe is what necessitated Jesus' death.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: And so it's so important that we consider the cost of our sin.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: We don't disassociate the two of them, but rather when we rebel against God, our mind draws back into the death of our Savior.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Do you consider the cost of your sin?
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: This is what I was talking about at the beginning of the message when I said that there's sort of two realities, two roads that we want to balance between.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: This is the first.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: And I'm telling you, the deeper that we can sort of wrestle with our sin and consider our own depravity, the greater the second road becomes.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Which is that the shame and the guilt that comes with our sin, we're not supposed to wallow in that for too long.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: See, shame is the business plan of the devil.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And Jesus defeated the devil.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: And so we move forward and we understand and we reflect on the love of God.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: We see that even in the depths of our worst mistakes and choices, that God came as a man to make his enemies into sons and daughters of the king.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Don't you see how grand that is?
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: And how the further we can go down the first road and understand our depravity, how far we have been removed from God's plan, the greater we can see God's love for us, the greater we can see everything that he has done for us, and the greater we can view his death as the greatest act of love that has ever been seen.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: If we just think of Jesus as a fact, then the love becomes a fact too, instead of this visceral truth.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: The prophet Isaiah talks about this.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: You saw some of these uh these verses when we were in worship.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Isaiah said he was pierced for our rebellion.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: He was crushed because of our iniquities.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Think of it this way: God's love pierced him.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: God's love crushed him.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: God's love for you in the depths of your sin, in the worst moments of your life, God's love for you put Jesus on that cross.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: That is the space that we are in.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: That is Good Friday.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: That is what we are trying to get to.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: And so the second question is do you consider?
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Do you reflect on the love that God has for you?
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: See, this is something that should change our lives.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: This is something that should pull us deeper into our relationship with God.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: If we are Mary and Martha, those who loved Jesus his whole life, especially the mother of God, raising him from a child, seeing her or knowing her dead son is behind this tomb, in this stone coffin, understanding that the love that God had for Mary was far greater than any love for a mother for her child.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: That the love that was coming out of that tomb was so strong, was so powerful, was so all-encompassing that it covered every single person the world over, and anyone who had lived, and anyone who would live in the future.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: That today we are covered by the blood of Jesus.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: We are covered by his love.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: It knows no bounds, and we do not deserve it.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: There was an individual, though, who had a firsthand knowledge of this love from the bottom to the very top.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: See, there was an individual that walked with Peter during his ministry that said to him, Rabbi, no matter what happens, I am never going to leave your side.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: And Jesus looks at Peter and says, Oh, Peter, you're going to do it three times tonight.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: The end of chapter 26, and we had just picked up at 27, the end of chapter 26, and Matthew finishes with Peter weeping because the rooster had crowed, signifying that he had rejected Jesus.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: In another gospel, it says that they made eye contact, Peter and Jesus, while he was in the governor's house, and that's what made him break down in tears.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Yet, yet, Peter ends up becoming one of the greatest forces for the gospel that the world has ever seen, becoming a leader of the new church that is going to explode in growth after the resurrection of Christ.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: And we see Peter, the one who rejected Peter the hothead, Peter, whose real name is Simon, but we call him Peter Caphas because it means rock.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: That Peter is one who understood both the depths of his sin and the love of God.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: That's why Peter, in his letter, in 1 Peter 2, 24, he says, He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that having died to sins, we might live for righteousness.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Quoting Isaiah, by his wounds, you have been healed.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Imagine for a moment that you're Peter, and your knowledge of Jesus is not a fact, but you walked with him.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: You spent a lot of time with him.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: You're in his inner circle.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Imagine if writing to a group of people in the early church saying that he bore our sins on the cross, and by his wounds we are healed.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Imagine if in your head the image of Jesus is not an artistic representation, but it is a true picture that you saw yourself.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: That what is going through your mind when you're writing that is literally the wounds of your Savior.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Seeing the blood, seeing the nails and his hands and his feet, that is the kind of reaction that we must have.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: And so, really, Peter introduces us to the third and final question, which is do you appreciate the death of Christ?
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: Peter did.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: Peter understood, though, the depth of his sin and the depth of God's love that was even greater.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: And because he had traveled to the extremes of those two roads, he was then able to appreciate Christ.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: So much so that he gave his life up for the early church, being killed for his faith.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: And that leaves us this evening thinking about Good Friday, thinking about the tomb at the same place, saying, How has your life been changed because of this tomb?
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: And I don't just mean, well, yeah, all the things that Jesus' death did for us.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Sure, we appreciate the fact that we've been forgiven of our sins.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Sure, we're thankful for our salvation, but do you just appreciate the fact that he died without moving forward into all of the ways that we have benefited from it?
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: What if tonight it is just a focus, not on everything else, not even on Easter, which is coming, whether you're coming tomorrow or Sunday, not on the resurrection, but just on the death of Jesus, what is represented in that?
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: The blood of our Savior, our sin pinning him to that tree, and God keeping him there because he loves us.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: That is a true appreciation for the death of Christ.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: That is where we need to be.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: The last thing we're going to do this evening is sort of take part in a tradition that the church has done for 2,000 years, ever since Jesus instituted it at the Last Supper.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: And as we take the elements of the Lord's table together, here is what I would like for us to do.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: I would like to have us reflect on what I've talked about.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Moreover, what God's word tells us.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Jeremiah is going to come up and lead us in worship, but really it's not so much that we sing, but allow the music that is played to sort of serve as a backdrop for your meditation or your quiet time or whatever you want to call it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Because Jeremiah is going to lead us through a beautiful song.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: I'll step off the stage.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: And during that time, consider.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: The depth of your sin.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Reflect on the love of God and appreciate the death of Christ.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Then I'll come back up, I'll walk us through the elements of the Lord's table.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: We'll finish the song.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I'll pray.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: And then I'll dismiss everyone.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: So go now.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Take this time to reflect on the filled tomb of Jesus.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: By his own betray the sin of men and wrath of God has been on Jesus histowing to the fathers will hear cross my salvation.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Do this in remembrance of me.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: In the same way, also he took the cup after supper and said, This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Now my death it is paid, it is paid in full by the precious blood that my Jesus now the curse of sin has hold on me whom the sun says free Oh is free cross my stop around other.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: And Lord, we thank you for that sealed tomb.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: God, you have loved us more than we can even fathom.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: More than we can even consider the depth of our sin, Lord.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: You love us more than that.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: And God, I ask that you would help us by the power of your Holy Spirit to just take this evening, to take the sealed tomb, to take the knowledge of the death of God as a sign of your love for us.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: God, please help us to see these things and to appreciate it even more and more.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Lord, you are so wonderful, so kind, so generous.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: And Father, we recognize as people of your word that we do not deserve that love.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: But we thank you for it anyway.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: God, we love you and we thank you again.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: It's in Jesus' name we pray.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: As we leave this evening, I think it would be appropriate to sort of maintain the posture or the tone or whatever you would like to call it of the sealed tomb.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Um it's wonderful to see everyone, but let's sort of carry that forth as we exit this evening until we can celebrate together as a church family the resurrection on Easter.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: I hope you have a great evening.
