- 0:49Speaker 1: Friday conversation and obviously five days of free agency. Adam,
- 0:54Speaker 1: Let's take a look at some of the things that
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Birds have done so far. Let's start with some
- 0:59Speaker 1: of the guys that they have added and re signed.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Yeah, so, Mike, when you hear the name Johnny Mount,
- 1:05Speaker 3: could he be anything more? Than any blocking tight end.
- 1:08Speaker 3: I mean what a name is like. He does turn
- 1:11Speaker 3: thirty two in November. He's an older player near the
- 1:14Speaker 3: end of his career, but the guy can block. The
- 1:16Speaker 3: number one reason why he's still in the NFL. He
- 1:19Speaker 3: was cut by the Jaguars and that's concerning, but as
- 1:22Speaker 3: long as he looks like he can still play, and
- 1:24Speaker 3: Eagles believe that he will most likely be their starting
- 1:27Speaker 3: why tight end. That means he's the first guy that's
- 1:31Speaker 3: going to be in there to block, and that's that's
- 1:34Speaker 3: why they signed him. The number one reason. And she
- 1:36Speaker 3: had another reason why the Eagles are going to be
- 1:38Speaker 3: a running team again, not that it should be anything different,
- 1:41Speaker 3: but they'll be probably heavy twelve personnel, which means two
- 1:44Speaker 3: tight ends to receivers, one back, which they basically were
- 1:48Speaker 3: last season and the season before that. You're going to
- 1:51Speaker 3: see a lot of that. They might use a fullback
- 1:53Speaker 3: Mike Well. That something we'll we'll learn in May once
- 1:57Speaker 3: they start OTA's But yet Johnny Munt's here to do
- 1:59Speaker 3: one thing that's the block.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:01Speaker 1: He's the first guy on the offensive side of the
- 2:04Speaker 1: ball that they brought in. And obviously we'll see what
- 2:07Speaker 1: Well they we'll get to some of the guys they
- 2:09Speaker 1: brought back, but he's the one guy from another organization
- 2:12Speaker 1: they brought in on the defensive side of the ball.
- 2:15Speaker 1: They have lost three starters, but they started to pick
- 2:19Speaker 1: up the pieces. What do you think of what they've
- 2:21Speaker 1: done on the defensive side of the ball so far.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah. The signing of Arnold Abiqutti I like a lot.
- 2:28Speaker 3: He's what we call DPR. He's a designated pantsharsh. He's
- 2:30Speaker 3: not a starting level player. We talked about him at
- 2:34Speaker 3: the trade deadline. That's a guy that would fit in
- 2:36Speaker 3: great with the Eagles, and then they didn't trade for him.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But he's the guy they've liked. That's why we actually
- 2:42Speaker 3: talked about him. They played at Temple for three years.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Excuse me, yeah, three years than one year at Penn State.
- 2:48Speaker 3: He's got what you love is the lens that the
- 2:51Speaker 3: thirty four and one inch arms. I talked to someone
- 2:54Speaker 3: who's had his pro day, very explosive. I like your
- 2:58Speaker 3: comparison to his. He's Ojelari. I know they're not built
- 3:01Speaker 3: exactly the same, but they're both shorter than you'd like,
- 3:04Speaker 3: but they have very long arms. A kitty about six
- 3:06Speaker 3: two in a quarter. But you like the arm leant.
- 3:09Speaker 3: He's explosive. I mean, that's what you're looking for. He's
- 3:14Speaker 3: his side and wall has nothing to do with the draft.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I mean that anyone on a one year deal has
- 3:19Speaker 3: no impact on the team's decision what they're going to
- 3:21Speaker 3: do in the draft. These are just guys they hope
- 3:24Speaker 3: they could excel in the role the role that they
- 3:26Speaker 3: have and then Rake Willan will be a starter for sure.
- 3:29Speaker 3: He's a one year deal. Again, this is not going
- 3:31Speaker 3: to impact the draft. But as I said on our show,
- 3:34Speaker 3: they dropped this morning with Jeff Bosher and I, if
- 3:38Speaker 3: Wollen's crushing it, if he could play consistent football, limit
- 3:43Speaker 3: the penalties, play with discipline, win shot us by Thanksgiving,
- 3:48Speaker 3: the extend his contract. I mean, they give him a
- 3:50Speaker 3: nice one year deal, so they want to see more
- 3:52Speaker 3: of it. And then they got Jonathan Jones in. Jonathan
- 3:54Speaker 3: Jones is a corner. He's not a nickel. He's shorter
- 3:56Speaker 3: than he's like, but very competitive, two time Super Bowl winner.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Due to the end of his career, but he most
- 4:02Speaker 3: likely will be the replacement for Dewey Jackson. The difference
- 4:05Speaker 3: is he won't be starting where Jackson did, so that
- 4:08Speaker 3: gives him two new corners they needed that. They probably
- 4:10Speaker 3: need one more by training camp where it comes in
- 4:13Speaker 3: the draft for free agency and Mike. But I still
- 4:17Speaker 3: believe if the opportunity arises, they're going to add a
- 4:20Speaker 3: significant piece at edge, if they can via trade or
- 4:24Speaker 3: maybe early in the draft because they need more help
- 4:26Speaker 3: at edge.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah, Eb, Ketty is in, Woolen is in. Jones is
- 4:30Speaker 1: in real quick back to Woolan here, I mean, are
- 4:32Speaker 1: you surprised the one year deal? A lot of people
- 4:35Speaker 1: really like this deal for Philadelphia. And obviously he's you know,
- 4:39Speaker 1: he's been an up and down guy, and his ups
- 4:41Speaker 1: are really up and his downs are really down.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It seems like exactly.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And Mike. They try to trade him at trade at
- 4:46Speaker 3: lend Mike's and they didn't. They were not going to
- 4:48Speaker 3: bring him back. So no. I but you could give
- 4:50Speaker 3: anyone a ten year contract, but when can you get
- 4:52Speaker 3: out of the contract. That's all that matters. There's no
- 4:55Speaker 3: guessing here. It's a one year deal. The deal wills
- 4:58Speaker 3: fire less they extend it before it ends next March.
- 5:00Speaker 3: So no, he in fact, if I'm him, I take
- 5:04Speaker 3: this one year and a handsteal. That's probably a little
- 5:06Speaker 3: bit smarter on his end. And the Eagles have had
- 5:09Speaker 3: a good history with guys on one year deals they
- 5:11Speaker 3: don't get all right. Obviously last year they missed on
- 5:13Speaker 3: a lot of them, but they were small money. This
- 5:15Speaker 3: is a bigger, much bigger deal cash wise than anyone
- 5:18Speaker 3: way bigger than anyone they signed last year. But it's
- 5:21Speaker 3: still a low cash bend for the Eagles, which is
- 5:23Speaker 3: what we told people. But the big one they did
- 5:25Speaker 3: not get was Jalen Phillips. They wanted him badly back
- 5:29Speaker 3: and they're on a multi year deal. It just didn't happen,
- 5:32Speaker 3: and they still need that big piece at edge, and
- 5:35Speaker 3: that's kind of what they're missing, all.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Right, Adam, Let's go to the guys they did bring back.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We Ma mentioned Johnny Munt as a guy at tight
- 5:42Speaker 1: end from outside the organization, but they did bring back
- 5:45Speaker 1: Grant Calcina as well. And it doesn't appear that they
- 5:49Speaker 1: have done anything with Dallas Goddard.
- 5:51Speaker 2: By four o'clock today.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I'm a little bit surprised with the Grand Capetaire, I'll
- 5:56Speaker 3: be honest with you, but just checking into it, this
- 5:59Speaker 3: is my sense with Johnny Munt, with Kim Latto, where
- 6:05Speaker 3: the other staff use Kaal Katerra way too much to
- 6:08Speaker 3: block and way that they asked the tight ends to Buck.
- 6:12Speaker 3: They're going to do it differently here. I just see
- 6:14Speaker 3: him being a if he makes the team, just being
- 6:18Speaker 3: used as a pass catcher strictly, and that's really all
- 6:20Speaker 3: he can do at this point, Mike. It's not a
- 6:22Speaker 3: one year deal. He needs to make the roster to
- 6:25Speaker 3: get paid, and we haven't got the contract breakdown on him.
- 6:28Speaker 3: But they're they're not even close to being done at
- 6:30Speaker 3: tight end. They don't have a starting ted end right now. Mike.
- 6:32Speaker 3: That's whether it's God or somebody else that's got to happen.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Agree with that. And I talked to Andrew and Jeff
- 6:38Speaker 1: about this the other day. I hope they're not trying
- 6:41Speaker 1: to say, you know what, we really like Calkatara if
- 6:43Speaker 1: he was given the opportunity and we can go on
- 6:46Speaker 1: the cheap at that spot.
- 6:47Speaker 3: No, they wanted to start a tight end. He's not
- 6:50Speaker 3: trust me on this, Mike. There's zero chances they're starting
- 6:53Speaker 3: tight end. They don't look at him at that way.
- 6:56Speaker 3: It's just they it's why he he's on a one
- 6:59Speaker 3: year value deal. They won a starting tight end, whether
- 7:02Speaker 3: it's Goddard or David Njoku or jon O Smith or
- 7:06Speaker 3: someone won the first couple of rounds of the draft.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I mean, this is kind of what they are. Their
- 7:10Speaker 3: many needs, Mike start, a starting to end is.
- 7:13Speaker 2: One of them. All Right, let's go to Braden Mann.
- 7:16Speaker 1: That was an important one because obviously kickers and punters,
- 7:19Speaker 1: if you were a kicker and putter in this offseason,
- 7:21Speaker 1: you got paid. And they really liked Man and got
- 7:24Speaker 1: him for four more years.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, so it's under it's and they never had
- 7:31Speaker 3: a four million when with everything tied into it as
- 7:34Speaker 3: I'm told, But yeah, this is a guy they wanted back,
- 7:36Speaker 3: he wanted to be back, and it's a good story
- 7:39Speaker 3: because the Jets. He was drafted by the Jets, never
- 7:42Speaker 3: really given a shot Pittsburgh. He told us, Andrew and
- 7:46Speaker 3: I host has show in Philly, and he kind of
- 7:47Speaker 3: told us how he was kind of held hostage by
- 7:50Speaker 3: the Jets. They couldn't make a decision and excuse me,
- 7:53Speaker 3: by the Steelers that rather and they couldn't make a
- 7:55Speaker 3: decision that they finally made a decision that the Eagles brought
- 7:57Speaker 3: him in and it was a great one. He just
- 8:00Speaker 3: it's because the NFC was so strong with their punters
- 8:02Speaker 3: he to make the Pro Bowl. But he was terrific
- 8:05Speaker 3: and he's a really good holder. I'm told. I know
- 8:07Speaker 3: that doesn't sound like much, but the coaches as sure does.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And getting him back was that priorty from They really
- 8:13Speaker 3: did one him back.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and as you just mentioned, a very important piece
- 8:18Speaker 1: of the special teams. Brandon manned back for Philadelphia. But
- 8:22Speaker 1: they lost a bunch of guys here.
- 8:23Speaker 2: He's back. Sam Howe is not.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Han Dotson is not Gilan Granson is not Matt Pryor
- 8:29Speaker 1: goes to Arizona. Rett Toad, the guy that we talked
- 8:32Speaker 1: a lot about and how well he played for them
- 8:34Speaker 1: last year. He's in San Francisco. So they need some
- 8:36Speaker 1: more depth on the offensive and the rest of the
- 8:38Speaker 1: guys seemed to be replaceable.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yeah, boy, Mike, they're really light. They need two veterans
- 8:43Speaker 3: of the offensive line by training camp. They really need
- 8:45Speaker 3: to have them. With Toath and prior gone that they
- 8:48Speaker 3: need to be replaced and that's something that look, they
- 8:51Speaker 3: don't have to do now. The longer you wait, the
- 8:53Speaker 3: better you save more money. And by the way the
- 8:56Speaker 3: Johan Dotsons deal. I cannot believe that the Falcons Gettee
- 9:01Speaker 3: and I have the contract. I have the contract breakdown.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I am shocked that they guaranteed ten million. You have
- 9:07Speaker 3: to remember, Mike, the Commanders do not want Dotson. They
- 9:11Speaker 3: would have cut him if they couldn't find a trade partner,
- 9:13Speaker 3: and the Eagles overpaid for him. I'm just astonished he
- 9:18Speaker 3: the looking at his contract, Mike, I mean, John Dotson
- 9:21Speaker 3: right now will be starting for the Falcons like that's
- 9:24Speaker 3: that's basically the contract structure they gave. They guaranteed eight
- 9:28Speaker 3: million in year one until two million of a seven
- 9:31Speaker 3: million a year two. That's starter money. It's low on
- 9:33Speaker 3: starter money. But unless they draft someone, Mike, John Dottson's
- 9:36Speaker 3: probably gonna start for the Falcons.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Yep.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And I guess the question with me would be, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: even though the Eagles did not use him all that much,
- 9:45Speaker 1: do they need to bring in another wide receiver or
- 9:47Speaker 1: do they like Darius Cooper? Do they you know, how
- 9:49Speaker 1: do they view that third wide receiver? Roll the way forward?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:52Speaker 3: They will, They'll out of receiver draft free agency. Yeah, absolutely,
- 9:56Speaker 3: Darris Cooper, the hope is here he'll compete for the three.
- 10:00Speaker 3: That's a big jump for him. They just love Johnny
- 10:02Speaker 3: Wilson come back from major injury. And they got Johnny
- 10:05Speaker 3: Wilson coming back. I mean, Johnny Wilson's coming back. Britain
- 10:08Speaker 3: Covey's only a slot. And if you look at who
- 10:12Speaker 3: they brought back, Qus Watkins is on their roster. He's
- 10:15Speaker 3: on their offseason roster. Like I can't believe it, but
- 10:18Speaker 3: he is. But that you know. And Danny Gray's back.
- 10:20Speaker 3: It's been hurt a lot, but can run. But that
- 10:22Speaker 3: these guys aren't good enough. So yeah, they'll definitely have
- 10:25Speaker 3: some competition for Darius Cooper for the number three.
- 10:27Speaker 1: All right on defense and by the way, AJ Dillon,
- 10:30Speaker 1: Ben Van Sumer and Brett Johnson. Interesting, he got a
- 10:33Speaker 1: lot of playing time obviously, and then there's got it.
- 10:35Speaker 2: They're all on side.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Yeah, boy, Fred Johnson, it would be a good good
- 10:40Speaker 3: because he could play right or left tackle. See the
- 10:42Speaker 3: question is because the blocking scheme is going to change,
- 10:46Speaker 3: and when with more zone blocking, you want more athletic
- 10:50Speaker 3: guys who can move. They don't have to be super talented.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Look at the Niners. Other than Trent Williams, they just
- 10:56Speaker 3: have certain body types and footwork that they're looking for.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Bet Fan Super was tenored as fully expected as a
- 11:01Speaker 3: restricted free agent. I'm very interest to see if they
- 11:05Speaker 3: bring him back because he's still a fullback and then
- 11:09Speaker 3: and not a linebacker. And then you will use one
- 11:12Speaker 3: because again this is a combination of two different schemes
- 11:17Speaker 3: of two different West Coast You're gonna see some cop
- 11:19Speaker 3: Shanaan influence and of course you're gonna see some Sean
- 11:22Speaker 3: mcveig influence. I'm really interesting to see what that looks like.
- 11:24Speaker 2: All right, let's go defense.
- 11:26Speaker 1: We know Phillip's gone, we know Dean gone, we know
- 11:28Speaker 1: Blanketship gone, o Jalai ooj So a lot of edge
- 11:32Speaker 1: rushers gone. Brandon Grahams does he wants to play? We'll
- 11:36Speaker 1: see if they, you know, bring him back at Dorry Jackson,
- 11:39Speaker 1: Marcus ep So, they've taken a lot of hits on defense.
- 11:43Speaker 3: It might for Beach to come back because let's say
- 11:47Speaker 3: they add a significant piece in free agency in a trade,
- 11:51Speaker 3: or let's say they spend a second round pick on
- 11:54Speaker 3: an edge. As long as they're not trading Nolan Smith,
- 11:57Speaker 3: there's been no indication they're doing that. I don't see Roofer.
- 12:01Speaker 3: They don't really need a fifth guy other than maybe
- 12:03Speaker 3: a developmental guy, because you've got Smith and Hunt. Hunt's
- 12:06Speaker 3: going to be starting. You got Epicetty, and then if
- 12:10Speaker 3: they get that fourth guy, you you're really Now They've
- 12:14Speaker 3: got Jose Ramirez, who had one great college year, was
- 12:17Speaker 3: drafted by the Buccaneers, who's on their off season roster.
- 12:20Speaker 3: So honestly, Mike, it comes down to what they do now.
- 12:26Speaker 3: It's kind of like they send the batsigal off for him.
- 12:28Speaker 3: They could wait till August. It's really the timeframe is irrelevant.
- 12:31Speaker 3: It doesn't matter. They could just play this thing out
- 12:33Speaker 3: and see if they need him or not. And then
- 12:34Speaker 3: BG made it pretty clear he's not retiring, and he
- 12:37Speaker 3: showed they could still play. It's kind of remarkable, Mikey.
- 12:40Speaker 3: He turns thirty seven next month. Thirty excuse me, he wouldn't.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Go anywhere else to play though, now of course? Right?
- 12:46Speaker 3: No, No, I well I'd say this. You never say never.
- 12:50Speaker 3: We remember that Cleveland had interested in him at one point,
- 12:53Speaker 3: or somebody like another team did. But yeah, I just
- 12:56Speaker 3: can't imagine. And I talking to beg over time. I
- 13:01Speaker 3: know he's gonna live in the area for sure. His
- 13:04Speaker 3: kids are going to school here, so yeah, I don't
- 13:06Speaker 3: see him leaving. But i'd watched that edge thing man,
- 13:09Speaker 3: that they've been sniffing around the big names and nothing's
- 13:12Speaker 3: worked out so far. And then of course you have
- 13:14Speaker 3: the draft, so that's coming up.
- 13:16Speaker 1: That is coming up, and of course we'll be all
- 13:18Speaker 1: over that. We'll have details on this year's draft party
- 13:21Speaker 1: April twenty third, and of course Football at four we'll
- 13:24Speaker 1: have more next week right here on the Sports Past
- 13:26Speaker 1: Live on ninety seven three ESPN.
- 13:28Speaker 2: All right, I appreciate it man.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Thankye, there's Adam kaplan are Football at four of course
