- 0:02Speaker 1: Well, good morning everybody. Good morning. You're listening to the
- 0:04Speaker 1: repcell like home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore. And
- 0:08Speaker 1: before I get into the show today, I gotta tell
- 0:10Speaker 1: you I saw something this past week. Two different times.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I saw two different people who are so inspiringly, inspiringly,
- 0:20Speaker 1: you know what I'm trying to say, optimistic. Do you
- 0:24Speaker 1: know what they were doing that made me think that
- 0:26Speaker 1: they were preparing their snowblowers for storage. Yeah, they were
- 0:32Speaker 1: running the gas out of the machines and then getting
- 0:34Speaker 1: them all shut down until next winter. Now, I don't
- 0:37Speaker 1: know about that. You know, we've had some wonderful weather.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I get that, and I sincerely hope that I'm wrong.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But I can't think of a spring break, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 1: on April spring break for the kids in you know,
- 0:50Speaker 1: elementary through high school normally that's first week of April.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I can't think of a spring break that didn't involve snow. Now, certainly,
- 0:57Speaker 1: certainly we maybe won't get enough snow to need a snowblower,
- 1:01Speaker 1: you know, maybe that's what they're thinking. You know, that
- 1:03Speaker 1: won't happen this late in the season, right, that's impossible
- 1:07Speaker 1: for us to get that much snow. We can just
- 1:09Speaker 1: shovel what comes right. Well, I was assuming that. I
- 1:12Speaker 1: assumed that's what these these two people were thinking. And
- 1:16Speaker 1: then I did a little googling and I found this
- 1:18Speaker 1: interesting little fact from one stinking year ago. I don't
- 1:22Speaker 1: even remember this, I have blocked it out, but one
- 1:25Speaker 1: year ago in West Michigan, here's the headline from the
- 1:29Speaker 1: story record snowfall across West Michigan. On Friday, East Grand
- 1:33Speaker 1: Rapids received eight point three inches of snow. And that
- 1:38Speaker 1: was from March twenty two of twenty twenty four. So
- 1:41Speaker 1: when I read that fun little fact, I did a
- 1:43Speaker 1: little more digging into my own personal records. And guess what.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I put my snowblower away for the season last year,
- 1:51Speaker 1: the week before that record snowfall. Coincidence, Oh, I don't
- 1:56Speaker 1: think so, there are no such things. So this year,
- 1:59Speaker 1: to help us all avoid that late season snowfall, I'm
- 2:03Speaker 1: keeping my snowblower gassed up and ready to go. You know,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm not superstitious, but I'm thinking if I do that,
- 2:09Speaker 1: that's going to keep the snow away, right, So do
- 2:12Speaker 1: with it what you want. Don't forget, though, to run
- 2:14Speaker 1: the fuel out of your snowblower before you store it,
- 2:17Speaker 1: or add fuel stabilizer, you know, whichever route you go,
- 2:20Speaker 1: just make sure that when you do that Winter's done.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Don't spit in Winter's face. Winter doesn't like that. Just
- 2:26Speaker 1: wait until we're sure that he's gone for the year.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Then make sure you remember to prepare your equipment for storage.
- 2:33Speaker 1: All right, That's enough of that. On the show today,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I've got an interview that I recorded with Mike Cherry,
- 2:38Speaker 1: the owner of Cherry Painting, and I'm going to air
- 2:40Speaker 1: a portion of that full conversation, and there's a lot
- 2:43Speaker 1: of ground. We cover everything from how Mike got started
- 2:46Speaker 1: in the business, to his favorite tips and tricks, to
- 2:49Speaker 1: some of his favorite concerts. He's a music buff and
- 2:52Speaker 1: we're going to get into all kinds of interesting things
- 2:54Speaker 1: in that conversation that's coming up now. In the last
- 2:57Speaker 1: little bit that I've got here in this opening segment,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I want to continue trying to demystify demystify the roller
- 3:04Speaker 1: cover aisle. Last week, we talked about the best roller
- 3:07Speaker 1: covers to use on common surfaces. This week, let's look
- 3:10Speaker 1: at the different nap thicknesses, which is just a fancy
- 3:13Speaker 1: way of saying how thick and fluffy the roller cover
- 3:16Speaker 1: is you know which one's the right one to choose
- 3:18Speaker 1: for your project. Well, let's look at it more closely
- 3:20Speaker 1: and see, all right, the three sixteenth inch nap it's
- 3:24Speaker 1: basically a super short nap and it's great for glossy
- 3:27Speaker 1: finishes where you want as little texture, little roller texture
- 3:30Speaker 1: as possible. But here's the catch. It doesn't hold very
- 3:33Speaker 1: much paint at all. So unless you've got a specific reason,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you're probably not going to want to use this for walls,
- 3:38Speaker 1: so potentially cabinets, doors, situations like that. But if you
- 3:43Speaker 1: listened last week, you remember that I talked about Wooster's
- 3:46Speaker 1: microplush covers. Those microplush covers are thicker naps than the
- 3:50Speaker 1: three sixteenth snap that we're talking about here, but the
- 3:53Speaker 1: fibers are so densely packed that those are pretty much
- 3:56Speaker 1: our go to recommendations when it comes to things like
- 3:59Speaker 1: cabinet's doors, and so three sixteen cs inch nap covers
- 4:02Speaker 1: they're seeing a little less use these days, but still
- 4:05Speaker 1: they're out there, and now you know why you'd use one. Now,
- 4:07Speaker 1: next up, we've got a three eighths inch nap. Now,
- 4:10Speaker 1: if you're painting walls, this is pretty much your go to.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It holds a good amount of paint, it applies it evenly,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and it keeps lap lines to a minimum. Basically, it
- 4:18Speaker 1: helps you work efficiently without creating a textured finish. That's
- 4:21Speaker 1: the three eighths inch nap your go to for walls.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Now half inch nap. If you're painting a textured ceiling,
- 4:27Speaker 1: a rough wall, brick, even block wall in a basement,
- 4:31Speaker 1: you need something thicker than those three eighths inch nap
- 4:33Speaker 1: covers and that's where this half inch nap comes in.
- 4:36Speaker 1: It carries more product and helps you get into those
- 4:38Speaker 1: nooks and crannies much easier. Now, the last one we'll
- 4:41Speaker 1: look at are the three quarter inch nap covers and thicker.
- 4:44Speaker 1: If you're painting extra rough surfaces, stucco, brick, exteriors, super
- 4:49Speaker 1: uneven surfaces, this is where you'd probably use one of these.
- 4:52Speaker 1: So how do you choose which is right for you
- 4:54Speaker 1: for your project? Well, here's the general rule. Use the
- 4:57Speaker 1: shortest snap that will work for what you're doing. You know,
- 5:00Speaker 1: don't go thicker unless you actually need it. And again,
- 5:03Speaker 1: if you're not sure, just ask us and remember Wooster
- 5:06Speaker 1: prodocy FTP roller covers are on sale at a great
- 5:09Speaker 1: price for the rest of the month at Repcolite. So
- 5:12Speaker 1: if you're a painting contractor, it's perfect time to stock
- 5:14Speaker 1: up on high quality supplies at a really good discount.
- 5:17Speaker 1: If you're a di wire, even if you don't have
- 5:20Speaker 1: a paint project lined up right now, grabbing a few
- 5:22Speaker 1: premium roller covers is a really smart move. When the
- 5:25Speaker 1: next painting project does come up, whether it's planned or unexpected,
- 5:28Speaker 1: sometimes those pop up. When that happens, you'll be ready
- 5:32Speaker 1: with top tier tools. You know you're not gonna be
- 5:34Speaker 1: scrambling or settling for lower quality options. You'll have good
- 5:37Speaker 1: covers waiting to go. And remember we talked about it
- 5:40Speaker 1: last week. A cheap or inferior roller cover can make
- 5:43Speaker 1: the best paint, the most expensive paint in the world,
- 5:46Speaker 1: look bad. The cover is definitely not the place to
- 5:49Speaker 1: skimp to save a few bucks. All right, let's take
- 5:52Speaker 1: a break. When we come back, I'll be chatting with
- 5:54Speaker 1: Mike Cherry from Cherry Painting. That's next stick around. Welcome
- 6:01Speaker 1: back to the Repcolite Home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And right now I've got something new that I've been
- 6:08Speaker 1: working on for a while on a daily basis. At Repcolite,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we work with some of the best painting contractors in
- 6:14Speaker 1: the industry, and from time to time I've had a
- 6:17Speaker 1: few of them on the show here. But moving forward,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you know, into this year, twenty twenty five, I want
- 6:22Speaker 1: to shift gears a little bit and I want to
- 6:24Speaker 1: use the radio show to shine a spotlight on many
- 6:28Speaker 1: of these painting companies as many as I can connect with.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I think it's a really good way that we can
- 6:33Speaker 1: say thank you to them. You know that Repcollite can
- 6:35Speaker 1: say thank you to them by just sitting down and
- 6:37Speaker 1: talking with them and letting them tell their story to
- 6:39Speaker 1: a large audience. You know. So that's really good. But
- 6:42Speaker 1: it's also really good for you as listeners. You know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: you can use these spotlight interviews that I'm going to
- 6:47Speaker 1: be playing throughout the year, not every week, but throughout
- 6:50Speaker 1: the year, use them as an opportunity to conduct your
- 6:53Speaker 1: own interviews of these contractors. You know, unless you've got
- 6:57Speaker 1: a painting contractor that you've worked with in the past,
- 7:00Speaker 1: can be a little daunting to try to find the
- 7:02Speaker 1: right company to hire the next time you need some
- 7:04Speaker 1: painting done. These interviews and discussions should really help you
- 7:08Speaker 1: determine which companies you find yourself connecting with. It's a
- 7:11Speaker 1: long form discussion and by the end you're really going
- 7:15Speaker 1: to have a good idea of who each company is,
- 7:17Speaker 1: who each person is, how they work, and if they
- 7:20Speaker 1: could be the right company to hire the next time
- 7:22Speaker 1: you need some painting done. All right, With all of
- 7:24Speaker 1: that said, today's interview is with Mike Cherry, the owner
- 7:27Speaker 1: of Cherry Painting, and if you like what you hear,
- 7:30Speaker 1: there's plenty more, a whole lot more. You can catch
- 7:33Speaker 1: the full interview on our YouTube series The Interviews. Just
- 7:36Speaker 1: had to reptollites YouTube page and check it out. All right,
- 7:39Speaker 1: that's enough of that. Let's jump into my conversation with
- 7:41Speaker 1: Mike Cherry from Cherry Painting. All right, let's start at
- 7:44Speaker 1: the beginning. You know, your dad, I know, played a
- 7:46Speaker 1: role in you becoming a painter.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Still plays it, still still play, still plays the role
- 7:54Speaker 2: of I would whatever chief executor. He's pretty on call
- 7:59Speaker 2: all the time. You know, I got a question here
- 8:01Speaker 2: and there and what they did. And you know, obviously
- 8:03Speaker 2: paints advanced in the last since he started back in
- 8:06Speaker 2: the late seventies.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Because he was doing this.
- 8:08Speaker 2: First, he went on the side. Yep, he did on
- 8:10Speaker 2: the side with a friend of his. They were doing
- 8:13Speaker 2: some suburban Detroit stuff, Milford area, Waterford Mott Now all
- 8:18Speaker 2: that area that was developing is still developing now, but
- 8:21Speaker 2: really developing back in the late seventies early eighties boom.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So they were going subdivision and subdivision young kids. My
- 8:28Speaker 2: dad was an eighteen year old kid, I believe at
- 8:30Speaker 2: the time, seventeen eighteen and just working on a crew
- 8:33Speaker 2: that his friend's brother started. Okay, went on to get
- 8:36Speaker 2: a degree he was doing. He taught for thirty five
- 8:38Speaker 2: thirty six years at what level. He was a high
- 8:41Speaker 2: school so.
- 8:41Speaker 1: He was high school teaching. In the summers, he's painting, correct,
- 8:44Speaker 1: real common we see.
- 8:45Speaker 2: A lot yep, yep that And I see wrote construction
- 8:48Speaker 2: guys doing some of that too. They come in and
- 8:49Speaker 2: they'll paint in the winter time when they're off. So
- 8:51Speaker 2: but yeah, anyway, he's he did that for my whole life.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I'm thirty, just turn thirty two. So as long as
- 8:58Speaker 2: I've known my dad, he's painted in the summertime. So
- 9:03Speaker 2: enjoyed it. I hated it. I actually absolutely hated it.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So when did you start with him?
- 9:08Speaker 2: So I was probably fourteen thirteen, fourteen years old. He
- 9:13Speaker 2: was really good. My brother and I were really active
- 9:15Speaker 2: in sports. So my brother went on to be a
- 9:19Speaker 2: coylege athlete and running and stuff and all American and
- 9:21Speaker 2: all that kind of thing.
- 9:22Speaker 1: People would have to be chasing me to get me.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Oh that's what everybody's then I have to pay. Sure
- 9:27Speaker 1: it's really worth while.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Sure, I'm glad one of us could do it, could
- 9:30Speaker 2: do that. I was just not that, not gifted like that.
- 9:32Speaker 2: So he's got a great job fifth grade position in
- 9:35Speaker 2: Grand Haven. Now loves it.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Your brother, yep, so he teaches as well.
- 9:39Speaker 2: He teaches as well.
- 9:40Speaker 1: My dad's still teaching.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Dad retired three years. This will be three years in June.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Brother teaches fifth grade.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Fifth grade. Yep. His wife teaches. My aunt taught. My cousins.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Both teach one in Utah, one in Shelby Heart Area.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I actually it's my degree, got a degree in teaching.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Long you know the day and backstory. He didn't really
- 10:01Speaker 2: want us to like it, so in fact I hated it.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Our mission accomplished that he did.
- 10:07Speaker 2: He he made us hate it. We had not like
- 10:09Speaker 2: super long, but ten hours as a fourteen year.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Old kid feels like an eternity.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Well, and we again, how many closets can you do it?
- 10:17Speaker 2: Where he let us through closets? You know, that's about
- 10:19Speaker 2: where he trusted us. But it was either running long,
- 10:23Speaker 2: long hours or long long distances during the weekends and
- 10:26Speaker 2: after school and then of course summer break. You don't
- 10:29Speaker 2: want to get a job, then you better get good
- 10:31Speaker 2: at something. So you know, now, all these years later,
- 10:34Speaker 2: I am so blessed he took me in and had
- 10:37Speaker 2: me do that with him.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So how long did you do that with him? Until
- 10:40Speaker 1: you decided off and on?
- 10:42Speaker 2: I wasn't, like I said, I didn't really like it,
- 10:44Speaker 2: And like again, how many closets can you do to
- 10:47Speaker 2: where you go, Wow, this where am I going to
- 10:49Speaker 2: progress into the next thing? I didn't know how.
- 10:51Speaker 1: You weren't looking at it as Okay, I'm going to
- 10:53Speaker 1: build this, know something you're looking for another?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Not a chance? Not a chance. There was a goal
- 10:58Speaker 2: for sure to get a degree in something. At that point,
- 11:01Speaker 2: fourteen year old kid, I didn't know what I want
- 11:02Speaker 2: to do. Sometimes I still don't know what I want
- 11:06Speaker 2: to do. No, I uh, so we go go to
- 11:09Speaker 2: went to high school, and and and finished really well
- 11:11Speaker 2: in my class, and got a pretty good scholarship academically
- 11:14Speaker 2: at Grand Valley State and then finished as with a teacher.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I still liked teaching. It was just a matter of
- 11:20Speaker 2: could I do this for thirty five plus years?
- 11:23Speaker 1: So did you start teaching?
- 11:24Speaker 2: Started teaching? Yep, I had a position I was as
- 11:29Speaker 2: I was secondary AD as well social studies as my
- 11:31Speaker 2: major in a history minor. I didn't become real first
- 11:35Speaker 2: in picking my minor, but I just loved history. So
- 11:39Speaker 2: I went, you know, did that want that whole route?
- 11:41Speaker 2: And decided, like I did two years of long term
- 11:46Speaker 2: sub positions, had a few full times across the state
- 11:49Speaker 2: that had offers to go, and just didn't want to move.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Liked it here. I had a longtime girlfriend at the time,
- 11:56Speaker 2: and and I just did not want to go across
- 11:59Speaker 2: the state. I love my family here, I love West Michigan.
- 12:01Speaker 2: This is where I want to put down my roots. So,
- 12:04Speaker 2: you know, patients, right, patients, patients, And then I don't know,
- 12:07Speaker 2: probably three years of just subbing all over in Oego County,
- 12:11Speaker 2: Oceana County two, and I think I just got burnt
- 12:14Speaker 2: out and I just wasn't sure. Academics was my thing.
- 12:18Speaker 2: So what do you do now?
- 12:20Speaker 1: Right?
- 12:21Speaker 2: What are you gonna do now? Son Gold and you
- 12:25Speaker 2: got to pay this money back and YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And then COVID hits and we have the whole COVID
- 12:30Speaker 2: deal and well you can don't have to pay your
- 12:33Speaker 2: loans right now. And again long stories, but fall back
- 12:38Speaker 2: on what was something I thought I hated was painting.
- 12:42Speaker 2: So then the cash flow comes in and now you're
- 12:45Speaker 2: now I'm eighteen at the time or nineteen, and going, well,
- 12:48Speaker 2: I like that cash. Yeah, it's pretty pretty quick. And
- 12:52Speaker 2: we were in and out and you know, we got
- 12:54Speaker 2: a full home and repaint and just doing walls and
- 12:58Speaker 2: so I like that money. And then it became the
- 13:00Speaker 2: people starting to talk to people like not here, I'm coming,
- 13:04Speaker 2: still working with your dad, still working with my dad, yep,
- 13:06Speaker 2: but we're talking homeowners and you're starting to go to
- 13:09Speaker 2: the trades. And I at this time I was pretty
- 13:11Speaker 2: heavily into Sherwin Williams. I just had got into that
- 13:14Speaker 2: that went that route, and you saw the light. I
- 13:17Speaker 2: saw the light. Yeah, I had Aaron Van Dlson. I'll
- 13:20Speaker 2: give him a shout out. He's my rep and and uh,
- 13:23Speaker 2: I don't know where it was somewhere I was doing
- 13:25Speaker 2: a house on like Michigan an exterior and Aaron van
- 13:28Speaker 2: Dlson it gave me his card or something I can't remember,
- 13:31Speaker 2: and hey, mind if I come out and take a
- 13:32Speaker 2: look like salesmans do. Yeah, yeah, and uh been one
- 13:37Speaker 2: of the best decisions I've made professionally, was that, right?
- 13:41Speaker 1: There was what just letting him stop out and talk?
- 13:43Speaker 2: Yep, yep?
- 13:45Speaker 1: What was so good about that?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Aaron's just a great guy in general, very approachable. He's
- 13:49Speaker 2: I mean, he's I think he I don't know if
- 13:52Speaker 2: he feels like he felt found his calling. I hope
- 13:54Speaker 2: he does, because that's he's got it. He's got the
- 13:57Speaker 2: personal skills, the people skilled. Yeah. So that again, that
- 14:01Speaker 2: was probably just it, not not really. I mean, to me,
- 14:04Speaker 2: paint sometime is paint. But again, back to the people,
- 14:07Speaker 2: Back to the people. I was getting another wrap every
- 14:10Speaker 2: six months. Again say I'm so and so, Hey, I'm Bob,
- 14:12Speaker 2: I'm I'm gonna hear your new seals. Well, what happened
- 14:14Speaker 2: to Joe or filling the blank name? So I donet
- 14:17Speaker 2: I didn't like that. I was really not into that
- 14:19Speaker 2: game as much. So I get in with replight. I'm
- 14:24Speaker 2: out of Miskeige in Port City.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Abe, yeahy Roy.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I don't think Roy's he's gonna outlive me. So we're
- 14:31Speaker 2: gonna he's gonna keep going. And Abe and and Ryan
- 14:34Speaker 2: up there, and Aaron and and Riley. It's it's just
- 14:36Speaker 2: a good crew.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So and it's steady. It's it's you know that they
- 14:40Speaker 1: don't go away. No, we don't do have a lot
- 14:42Speaker 1: of turnover. And I know that's such a big deal.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It's been a lot of fun. I hope he continues. Obviously,
- 14:47Speaker 2: it's I'm not going anywhere. They're obviously not going anywhere.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So when did you start off on your own or
- 14:54Speaker 1: or you're yeah, or does your dad work for you? Now?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a he's pretty much retired. Occasionally he'll come out.
- 15:00Speaker 2: He likes to prime. He likes to come out and
- 15:02Speaker 2: prime runs a sprayer Sometimes. I like to get him
- 15:05Speaker 2: a workout for back roll and ceilings. He liked to
- 15:08Speaker 2: do that.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I have him do some closets or something. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:11Speaker 1: he's on the tables.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Sure, sure, yeah. We so we transitioned into that got
- 15:15Speaker 2: really lucky. Dave douson Dan Custom Homes, where I've been
- 15:19Speaker 2: the last probably three years, took a chance on me.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So we and and my dad at the time, and
- 15:25Speaker 2: and that blossomed into well, you know, going from bathrooms
- 15:29Speaker 2: literally bathrooms and residential repaints of walls and ceilings, very
- 15:33Speaker 2: little trim at that time, and it's been new construction
- 15:37Speaker 2: ever since. I don't like parents paving paradise to put
- 15:41Speaker 2: up a parking lot. I don't like that, but I
- 15:44Speaker 2: do like the money.
- 15:47Speaker 1: It's always that balance. Sure, how much can I tolerate?
- 15:51Speaker 1: Sure enough?
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. I My grandparents had a big and
- 15:56Speaker 2: before I was even around, had big swet land and
- 15:58Speaker 2: stuff that that's starting to develop, and you just you
- 16:01Speaker 2: hate to see that.
- 16:02Speaker 1: But well you're not developing it, you're just making it
- 16:05Speaker 1: look good. Right, No, it's gonna be there anyway. It
- 16:08Speaker 1: might as well look good.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I tell everybody, I look, I can't stop this from happening.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I just got to go along for the ride. So
- 16:15Speaker 2: and again I'm blessed for that. So yeah, we we
- 16:17Speaker 2: just my dad's kind of transition out of I mean,
- 16:20Speaker 2: he's just an elder, right, he's my dad. He's my
- 16:23Speaker 2: really between my dad and my brother and best friends.
- 16:27Speaker 2: We never really got I mean, father's son get a
- 16:30Speaker 2: little heated when now your son is your cult boss,
- 16:32Speaker 2: which I never like to, never ever want to experience.
- 16:36Speaker 1: That sounds loaded.
- 16:41Speaker 2: No, I never want to. And I hope my dad
- 16:45Speaker 2: never felt that way, Like I was watching over him
- 16:47Speaker 2: that kind of thing. He's the one that taught me.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Right, So there's no it is a weird dynamic.
- 16:52Speaker 2: It's a very weird dynamic. How dude, is you know
- 16:55Speaker 2: teaching me to walk and talk?
- 16:56Speaker 1: And how do you get after your dad?
- 16:58Speaker 2: Yeah? How do you get off of your own? And
- 17:00Speaker 2: I think for me, it's just sometimes it's a speed thing,
- 17:03Speaker 2: you know, It's like I want it done, you gotta
- 17:04Speaker 2: do it right. He knows to do it correct. But
- 17:07Speaker 2: now there's that fine line between speed and you know
- 17:10Speaker 2: how like how we Hey, I can't have you taken
- 17:14Speaker 2: two days to you know, fill your sale.
- 17:16Speaker 1: We're gonna have to let you go.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Ah, Dad, I really don't want to have to let
- 17:21Speaker 2: you go here.
- 17:22Speaker 1: But now that's awesome.
- 17:25Speaker 2: No. So yeah, so he just kind of transitioned out
- 17:27Speaker 2: a little bit. He's he's enjoying his retirement's traveling quite
- 17:30Speaker 2: a bit he developed parkins He had Parkinson's diagnosed with Parkinson's.
- 17:34Speaker 2: About man, this is probably year six now, okay, And
- 17:39Speaker 2: so I think that was a that's a very big
- 17:41Speaker 2: eye opener for all of us in our family. So
- 17:45Speaker 2: he's he's just loving. He lost both his folks last year.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Twenty twenty four is a tough year for for us
- 17:51Speaker 2: as a family and him. Yeah, and it's his you know,
- 17:54Speaker 2: So I I think he just I don't want to
- 17:57Speaker 2: say you don't you see that light demorin right, don't
- 18:00Speaker 2: want to say that, but I just you only have
- 18:02Speaker 2: so much time to do the things you want to do, right,
- 18:05Speaker 2: And not that he doesn't want to play second hand
- 18:08Speaker 2: to his son in some house in Muskegon County, But boy,
- 18:12Speaker 2: there's a lot of United States. There's a lot of
- 18:14Speaker 2: world out there to do.
- 18:16Speaker 1: My dad had a heart attack, I don't know, three
- 18:19Speaker 1: years ago or so, and it was one of those things.
- 18:21Speaker 1: He was so so healthy, you know, always doing something.
- 18:24Speaker 1: He's hauling something out of the basement, a big piece
- 18:26Speaker 1: of furniture, you know. Yeah, because that's what he does.
- 18:29Speaker 1: He just completely pushes himself beyond what's normal d do
- 18:33Speaker 1: passes out at the top of the steps, complete eye opener,
- 18:36Speaker 1: open heart surgery, you know, and doing well again. But
- 18:39Speaker 1: it was that wake up call where you think, man,
- 18:41Speaker 1: you take so much for granted, you know, especially when
- 18:44Speaker 1: your parents are clicking along just fine, right man, You
- 18:47Speaker 1: just don't know what's coming. You want to make the
- 18:48Speaker 1: most of what you've got.
- 18:49Speaker 2: And I'm so glad he's able to do that.
- 18:51Speaker 1: All right, let's take a quick break and then we'll
- 18:53Speaker 1: get back to more of my interview with Mike Cherry
- 18:55Speaker 1: from Cherry Painting. Stick around and we're back. You're listening
- 19:02Speaker 1: to the Repcolite Home Improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and we're going to jump back into my interview with
- 19:07Speaker 1: Mike Cherry, owner of Cherry Painting. But before I get
- 19:10Speaker 1: things moving again, I want to remind you that there's
- 19:13Speaker 1: much more to the interview. You can catch all of
- 19:15Speaker 1: it in glorious full color video on repco Lightes YouTube page.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Just check out our new series The Interviews. All right,
- 19:23Speaker 1: let's get back to Mike Cherry from Cherry Painting. Your
- 19:26Speaker 1: huge music guy, yeh yeah, concerts. You've seen everybody from
- 19:30Speaker 1: the Rolling Stones to Paul McCartney. Now see that's about
- 19:34Speaker 1: as big as it gets for me, what's been the
- 19:37Speaker 1: best concert experience that you've had?
- 19:41Speaker 2: Well, because I said you mentioned that, I mentioned in
- 19:44Speaker 2: our interview the questionnaire you gave me so many. I'm
- 19:47Speaker 2: trying to think on my way here, even how many
- 19:50Speaker 2: had been to at the young and energetic age of
- 19:55Speaker 2: thirty two. Why is a thirty two year old loving
- 19:57Speaker 2: the Stones right or even Paul McCartney.
- 20:00Speaker 1: And because they're all very good.
- 20:02Speaker 2: They're all very very good, and I don't I guess again,
- 20:05Speaker 2: my dad instilled in me or sometimes a lot of
- 20:08Speaker 2: people listen to their dad stuff too, or mom stuff
- 20:10Speaker 2: back in the my mom loves heart and you know
- 20:14Speaker 2: it's I love it too, you know, And I don't
- 20:18Speaker 2: know it never left me, and that that never ever left.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I kept listening classic rock. Step in any job site
- 20:25Speaker 2: and they're listening to some classic rock. There's a couple
- 20:29Speaker 2: of head bangers in there, and you know, occasionally we've
- 20:32Speaker 2: got some gospel going on over here, and it's different floors. Yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 2: everybody's got their job site radio. Which Flora are you
- 20:39Speaker 2: on today? So I never have to bring my radio.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I never have to bring anything.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Because you can tolerate the music. The music whatever.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I love every one of them. You know, I've seen everything.
- 20:50Speaker 2: You saw Chris Dawtrey, I mean Sawrey American Yeah, yeah, top.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I think he's tenth or something in American Idol.
- 21:00Speaker 1: When did you see Paul McCartney, Oh.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Man, I must have been. He was in Grand Rapids.
- 21:05Speaker 2: For those listening helped me out. They was ingrind right,
- 21:08Speaker 2: I was in Grand rapp where I know, you know what,
- 21:10Speaker 2: so many people have said that, like, I can't believe
- 21:13Speaker 2: I didn't go, And you know who really wanted to
- 21:16Speaker 2: go most out of all this. My dad's a massive
- 21:17Speaker 2: Beatles fan. My mom she wanted us to go as
- 21:20Speaker 2: a family. I was probably seventeen eighteen. Again, there's that
- 21:25Speaker 2: The date is on there somewhere, we can find it
- 21:27Speaker 2: on Google. But he came, and I think my mom
- 21:29Speaker 2: just said, well, he's never gonna come to Grand Rapids again.
- 21:32Speaker 2: And of course I'm thinking, nah, he's probably gonna come
- 21:35Speaker 2: to Grand rap fan and it's pretty big, and I
- 21:38Speaker 2: think my mom was right. Yeah, I don't think he
- 21:40Speaker 2: will ever.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Did you all go as agree?
- 21:42Speaker 2: We all want my brother myself?
- 21:43Speaker 1: Did she scream?
- 21:45Speaker 2: Nope, she didn't scream as much. I think my dad
- 21:47Speaker 2: cried a little bit. Okay, I didn't. Yeah, yeah, I
- 21:50Speaker 2: don't think, uh, you know, I think I did, probably
- 21:52Speaker 2: cried her and let it be. I get my emotions
- 21:54Speaker 2: through my dad. It was just again something at the
- 21:58Speaker 2: time said, I listened to it my whole life. Well,
- 22:01Speaker 2: I'm not a seventy year old man or a sixty
- 22:03Speaker 2: year old man or fifty year old man that had
- 22:05Speaker 2: listened to it his whole life. But I listened since
- 22:07Speaker 2: I was, you know, old enough to listen to music
- 22:10Speaker 2: ten years old or something that my dad would have
- 22:13Speaker 2: Let it be right, you know, I've Yeah, the angels
- 22:16Speaker 2: came down. I think at that we're on sitting in
- 22:19Speaker 2: our row, probably just sitting in all of Banelreena so cool. Yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 2: So whenever he was there, we just I just saw
- 22:26Speaker 2: the stones last summer, last June, I believe it was
- 22:29Speaker 2: down at Cleveland. So I went to the Rock and
- 22:31Speaker 2: Roll Hall of Fame and did the saw the stones
- 22:34Speaker 2: and we had great seats. Another friend of a friend
- 22:36Speaker 2: of mine, another guy I painted his house, become really
- 22:39Speaker 2: good friends with. My dad was friends with We're going
- 22:42Speaker 2: to see the stones together. So it was him and
- 22:44Speaker 2: his son. My dad actually did have open heart surgery
- 22:48Speaker 2: that week, so he was not able to go. We
- 22:50Speaker 2: were all supposed to go. He was not good. You
- 22:52Speaker 2: had a triple bypass, totally unexpected. Obviously we're glad we
- 22:57Speaker 2: he caught that. Yeah, caught it before that could have
- 22:59Speaker 2: got really bad in there. Yeah, like you're mentioned, so
- 23:03Speaker 2: he wasn't able to go, but you know, we said,
- 23:06Speaker 2: hopefully it comes around again. But yeah, so the stone
- 23:09Speaker 2: Stevie Nicks a couple of times.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Anyone jump out at you is like that one.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, circle back around. Jackson Brown is my dad
- 23:17Speaker 2: and I favorite. Definitely was my dad's favorite and became
- 23:19Speaker 2: my favorite, probably because again because of my dad. We
- 23:22Speaker 2: love James Taylor and Jackson Brown. It was just those
- 23:26Speaker 2: are the two and they stuck. They've always stuck out
- 23:28Speaker 2: to me. That was probably my favorite. We saw them
- 23:31Speaker 2: third row at Vanandel. Jackson Brown actually opened for James Taylor.
- 23:35Speaker 2: This is right after COVID masks.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I remember this, yep, And when it happened yep.
- 23:40Speaker 2: I had to have a mask on of course, and
- 23:42Speaker 2: it was just like maybe that was part of it too.
- 23:44Speaker 2: We had all no no no, no, no no. Well,
- 23:50Speaker 2: I think we had all We couldn't do anything. Couldn't
- 23:53Speaker 2: even go to the get a burger, you know, downtown
- 23:55Speaker 2: or so a lot of that stuff we take for
- 23:57Speaker 2: granted now, Oh yeah, I hope hope people do not,
- 24:01Speaker 2: but I did and we couldn't do it. And guess
- 24:04Speaker 2: what else we couldn't do? Go to concerts right full
- 24:06Speaker 2: of ten thousand people or whatever they fit at Van
- 24:09Speaker 2: Andle So we had that right after COVID. So it
- 24:14Speaker 2: was just like sure, and then to have both your
- 24:16Speaker 2: guys right, both your guys you listened to that. My
- 24:18Speaker 2: dad listened to and learned to play guitar from those guys.
- 24:22Speaker 2: That was probably my most important memory.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's really cool. So getting back to paints, Sure,
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'm curious you got a lot of people out there
- 24:31Speaker 1: listening di wires and stuff like that. We haven't talked
- 24:34Speaker 1: about this. I'm curious about just some practical ideas. You know,
- 24:37Speaker 1: what's the number one you know, if you would think
- 24:40Speaker 1: of like rookie mistakes, Yeah, that people make that the
- 24:43Speaker 1: diires out there could be stumbling through and could probably
- 24:47Speaker 1: try to avoid.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Ah man, you know, I the advancements in paint itself
- 24:52Speaker 2: has gone way just since I have not been painting
- 24:55Speaker 2: as long as as many of you listening, and you
- 24:58Speaker 2: know way more than I do. You know, I just
- 25:01Speaker 2: think our tools are are huge, and I'll maybe think
- 25:05Speaker 2: of something as am. This's a great question anyway, frog tape,
- 25:09Speaker 2: for example, Let's just go down there. Let's go down
- 25:12Speaker 2: just in our tools. There are painters that I know,
- 25:16Speaker 2: and we won't mention that any of their names that
- 25:18Speaker 2: don't like frog tape, and I just don't understand it
- 25:23Speaker 2: or or don't want to spend the money for it,
- 25:24Speaker 2: and we'll go with the original blue or so I
- 25:26Speaker 2: don't know, or some of you are there going, oh
- 25:28Speaker 2: my gosh, I can't believe you still use tape. What
- 25:30Speaker 2: do you mean those guys that don't. I can cut
- 25:33Speaker 2: straighter than nobody cut straighter than tape except me kind
- 25:35Speaker 2: of think.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Talk about so frog tape. First off, for anybody out
- 25:38Speaker 1: there who's not aware, it's just it's a special tape
- 25:40Speaker 1: that's got it's chemically altered so that when the water
- 25:44Speaker 1: from the water based paint hits the edge of the tape,
- 25:46Speaker 1: it feels it yep. And if it's guaranteed or the
- 25:50Speaker 1: design it's designed to prevent that point paint bleed through.
- 25:53Speaker 1: That's so frustrating.
- 25:54Speaker 2: It happens. It's still going to happen. If your baseboards
- 25:57Speaker 2: are clean and you're taking a damp brag before your baseball,
- 26:01Speaker 2: you know, before I'm sure dust settles on it. It's
- 26:05Speaker 2: I'm not gonna say it's impossible to get a bleed,
- 26:07Speaker 2: because it's still gonna happen. The paint bleed is inevitable.
- 26:09Speaker 2: It's going to happen, but it's much harder now with
- 26:13Speaker 2: that particular tape, that particular tape. So I love the
- 26:17Speaker 2: frog blue because I can get them in six packs
- 26:18Speaker 2: one inch or point nine to four inch.
- 26:21Speaker 1: You know, they blue, there's green and yellow. They all
- 26:23Speaker 1: do different things. He talked about them on the show
- 26:26Speaker 1: multiple times. Yeah, and so you use the blue.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I love the blue because I can get again, get
- 26:30Speaker 2: them in six packs a little bit cheaper. You don't
- 26:32Speaker 2: have to buy the the the green with the with
- 26:35Speaker 2: the hard case that I mean, I've those to me.
- 26:38Speaker 2: That's the premium, right, it's the I would use that
- 26:41Speaker 2: if I absolutely thought I didn't trust myself for some reason.
- 26:47Speaker 2: The blue, I just love it. You can get them
- 26:48Speaker 2: in six packs, yeah, yeah, contractor deal and so what
- 26:53Speaker 2: of them?
- 26:54Speaker 1: What about those folks who are saying and like you said,
- 26:56Speaker 1: there are people yep, hollering at the at the at
- 26:59Speaker 1: their phone or however they're listening to this that you know,
- 27:01Speaker 1: they don't tape. They get that clean line without you tape.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Do you tape on everything.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Or not everything? If they yeah, I mean if it's
- 27:10Speaker 2: most new constructions. I mean, of course, no one's taping
- 27:13Speaker 2: their ceiling. I mean some that do not. No offense
- 27:16Speaker 2: to anybody that is that's a douire that doesn't feel
- 27:18Speaker 2: like they can cut a straight line on your ceiling.
- 27:20Speaker 2: By all means, whatever gets the job done. There's not
- 27:23Speaker 2: a wrong way right way. There's the only right way
- 27:26Speaker 2: is your way and what you are happy with.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Yeah. The wrong way is forcing yourself into a system
- 27:33Speaker 1: or a mode of operation that's outside of what you
- 27:36Speaker 1: know you're really comfortable doing, in order to mimic what
- 27:39Speaker 1: you think somebody else who's a professional should be doing.
- 27:43Speaker 1: We're not professional, or that told you was that's the
- 27:45Speaker 1: only way, So you do what you gotta do.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't. There is no only way, and probably
- 27:51Speaker 2: anything just ask YouTube. There's a bunch of different ways
- 27:56Speaker 2: to do things. So, yeah, I just love frog tape
- 27:59Speaker 2: and as far as you know, troubleshooting and stuff, I
- 28:03Speaker 2: I like to use a wet right, little wet rag
- 28:05Speaker 2: before I know it it does. It seals the paint
- 28:08Speaker 2: a little better.
- 28:09Speaker 1: You get the tape down and then you'll hit it
- 28:11Speaker 1: with a wet rag.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Very not and I'm not saying some people think they're
- 28:14Speaker 2: gonna soak it. Yeah, don't do that. I would not
- 28:17Speaker 2: do that. You don't want to just soak that paper.
- 28:19Speaker 2: But yeah, just just lightly before you go around with
- 28:22Speaker 2: your first coat, that will ensure a definite better seal.
- 28:25Speaker 2: You can feel, you can actually feel a difference when
- 28:27Speaker 2: you go to peel it.
- 28:28Speaker 1: You're just preactivating that that that chemical is gonna exactly seal.
- 28:34Speaker 2: I didn't know that. I mean, I think they probably
- 28:36Speaker 2: do show that now on on frog tapes sometimes, you know, demonstration,
- 28:40Speaker 2: they'll actually show that I did. Somebody told me, another
- 28:42Speaker 2: painter told me that, so I gave it a try
- 28:45Speaker 2: and he was right. You know, it's one of those
- 28:47Speaker 2: Thank you whoever told me that, if you're listening, thank
- 28:49Speaker 2: you so much, because I use it.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Do you think that it speeds up? You know, because
- 28:53Speaker 1: the argument is going to be that I can go
- 28:56Speaker 1: way faster just cutting in by eye.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Yep.
- 28:58Speaker 1: And I'm sure that's the case for some people. Sure,
- 29:01Speaker 1: But for you, you feel like you're faster taking the time
- 29:04Speaker 1: or is it just that you're more efficient, I get
- 29:06Speaker 1: a better.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Job, Yeah, I think whatever is. I'm super addicted to
- 29:10Speaker 2: getting the best job I can get and my own
- 29:14Speaker 2: worst enemy sometimes where if this takes me a little
- 29:16Speaker 2: bit longer, and of course that time is money. We
- 29:19Speaker 2: all know that in this trade or any trade. Again,
- 29:23Speaker 2: if it sacrificed my time, you know, if I'm going
- 29:25Speaker 2: a little faster and it's sacrificing the results of this job.
- 29:28Speaker 2: It's someone's dream home that we're dealing with here, whether
- 29:31Speaker 2: it's sold or not, it's somebody's going to purchase this,
- 29:34Speaker 2: And I just I always worry about what someone else
- 29:36Speaker 2: is thinking, or somebody's going to see that later on.
- 29:40Speaker 2: They might not see it right away, and wonder somebody
- 29:42Speaker 2: like I just cut that corner. Whether they say that
- 29:45Speaker 2: or not, it's in my mind they're going to say that.
- 29:47Speaker 2: So it drives me nuts. So a little bit of
- 29:51Speaker 2: perfectionist there, but to your best, that's what I use.
- 29:56Speaker 1: The tools that are available. Sure, so frog tape, other
- 29:59Speaker 1: tools that jump out.
- 29:59Speaker 2: In oh, I mean just everything from a real quality brush. Again,
- 30:04Speaker 2: use quality stuff. It goes longer if you clean it out,
- 30:08Speaker 2: you do it. They're a correct way in your job.
- 30:10Speaker 2: I think, in my opinion, is gonna benefit from that.
- 30:14Speaker 2: The homeowner is gonna benefit from that.
- 30:17Speaker 1: And let's take a break right there, and then after
- 30:20Speaker 1: the commercials, we'll be back for the conclusion of my
- 30:22Speaker 1: interview with Mike Cherry from Cheery Painting. Stick around and
- 30:32Speaker 1: we're back. We are absolutely just cruising right along. You're
- 30:35Speaker 1: listening to the Repco Light Home improvement show sponsored by
- 30:38Speaker 1: Benjamin Moore, and I've got the conclusion to my interview
- 30:41Speaker 1: with Mike Cherry, owner of Cherry Painting. But again, one
- 30:44Speaker 1: more time before I get to that interview, I want
- 30:47Speaker 1: to remind you that there's much more, like thirty five
- 30:50Speaker 1: more minutes of content, a lot of good fun stuff,
- 30:53Speaker 1: and you can catch all of it on Repcoal Lights
- 30:56Speaker 1: YouTube page. Just check out our new series the Interviews.
- 31:00Speaker 1: All right, here's the conclusion of my interview with Mike
- 31:02Speaker 1: Cherry from Cherry Painting. So different products, what about paint
- 31:05Speaker 1: and you know, I talk about this because I'm marketing
- 31:08Speaker 1: paint and selling paint, and so I know how people
- 31:11Speaker 1: potentially listen to that. Yep, you know I'm the guy
- 31:14Speaker 1: selling it. You're the guy buying it.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 31:16Speaker 1: You just talked about frog tape, talked about brushes, all
- 31:19Speaker 1: of that. The good stuff matters. How do you feel
- 31:21Speaker 1: about paint? I don't know what you're gonna say on this.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, I'll open the can of worms.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yeah, just say.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Somebody will go, what in the world are you talking
- 31:29Speaker 2: about it? This? And this? There's there's a definite I
- 31:33Speaker 2: struggle like everybody because I'm the one trying to sell
- 31:35Speaker 2: it to a homeowner. You sell it to me. Yep,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I have something that I might like that it rolls
- 31:40Speaker 2: off the brush well or feeling you know, what's got
- 31:42Speaker 2: the most washability for the less the leachine. Right, everybody's
- 31:46Speaker 2: looking for that perfect scenario, that perfect paint. Can I
- 31:51Speaker 2: still get it for thirty dollars a gallon, No tried double,
- 31:56Speaker 2: and then we'll work. I you know, I'm I've really
- 32:00Speaker 2: become I have a deep appreciation for care Free Repco Lights.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Care Free I getting at a great deal. I feel
- 32:10Speaker 2: like the eggshell's got some decent washability. The homeowner wins,
- 32:15Speaker 2: it looks great. I like it because I'm winning a
- 32:17Speaker 2: little bit. And I mean, if we both win here,
- 32:21Speaker 2: what's the trade off? Right? Is it going to scrub
- 32:24Speaker 2: like scuffax? No? Absolutely not. If you wanted that, then
- 32:28Speaker 2: go with scuff X. But that middle ground for me
- 32:32Speaker 2: is that is that care free? Do I use scuffax
- 32:34Speaker 2: on every single one of my trim jobs, regardless of price? Yes,
- 32:39Speaker 2: that's all I use. It's what I love to use.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Looks great to me, it's it's my go to the
- 32:44Speaker 2: di wires. Painting your own home, how do you how
- 32:46Speaker 2: do you justify seventy dollars gallon paint? Well, it's gonna last,
- 32:51Speaker 2: gonna look great, your kids can beat the heck out
- 32:54Speaker 2: of it. You should be able to wash scrub it
- 32:57Speaker 2: quite easily without seeing a massive sh change and all
- 33:00Speaker 2: that kind of thing. So yeah, back to that main
- 33:02Speaker 2: party of question, get the best that you can, that
- 33:04Speaker 2: you're that you can afford.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Like you said, the thing that I always try to
- 33:08Speaker 1: make the case because my default position is money saving,
- 33:12Speaker 1: you know, on everything that I buy. And as I
- 33:14Speaker 1: get older, I get wiser, and you realize that it's
- 33:17Speaker 1: worth spending the extra cause it's gonna last longer. Now
- 33:19Speaker 1: I can't spend the extra on everything. I still have
- 33:22Speaker 1: to make adjustments. So you still have to make those decisions.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Where can I, you know, afford to make the cuts.
- 33:27Speaker 1: And that's why the second secondary bedrooms and things like that.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Closets can be different products. But when you talk about Okay,
- 33:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna drop the big bucks, I'm gonna get scuff
- 33:36Speaker 1: x big bucks. But you know it feels big in
- 33:39Speaker 1: terms of a gallon of paint, and I'm going to
- 33:41Speaker 1: put that on, you know, as a di wire. Especially
- 33:44Speaker 1: thinking about it that way, the amount of work, you know,
- 33:47Speaker 1: using a quality paint, it applies easier usually, so you're
- 33:50Speaker 1: gonna it's gonna be either the same amount of work
- 33:52Speaker 1: or easier a little bit. To use a better product,
- 33:55Speaker 1: you're not gonna have to do it nearly as often. Correct,
- 33:58Speaker 1: that's the downside with the cheaper thing. You may save
- 34:00Speaker 1: some money, work is the same and you're doing it quicker. Again,
- 34:04Speaker 1: So if you don't love doing it, drop that extra
- 34:06Speaker 1: ahead of time and you'll save money in the long.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Run, and a lot of you if you're listening to
- 34:10Speaker 2: the show. You actually like painting, you know, you're actually
- 34:12Speaker 2: or at least you're interested in the trade or like
- 34:15Speaker 2: doing your own home.
- 34:16Speaker 1: So you find the best thing you can afford.
- 34:19Speaker 2: I think. So that's I'm going to have some Yeah,
- 34:23Speaker 2: get the best that you can afford.
- 34:24Speaker 1: No, that's good advice. And you know when people are
- 34:29Speaker 1: hiring contractors, you know they're they're contacting you. Now you're
- 34:32Speaker 1: working for a builder. But do you have any advice
- 34:35Speaker 1: out there for people who are looking to hire somebody?
- 34:38Speaker 1: And what are some things they should be looking for?
- 34:39Speaker 1: What are maybe some red flags.
- 34:41Speaker 2: That you would see in the workers?
- 34:43Speaker 1: You mean, yeah, I'm thinking in the people that they're
- 34:45Speaker 1: you know, they're trying to get a contractor into their home. Sure,
- 34:48Speaker 1: what should they be looking for?
- 34:49Speaker 2: So red flags for me, I mean you can tell
- 34:53Speaker 2: right away a personality of somebody and how you're going
- 34:55Speaker 2: to go. And I'm there's some guys that are amazing salesmen,
- 34:58Speaker 2: that are painters, that are going to sell you on
- 34:59Speaker 2: some thing. They've never done it, the fake it till
- 35:01Speaker 2: you make it, you know, beware of those. But they're there.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Those guys are there, those women are there, They're they
- 35:10Speaker 2: can they can sell you on a great job, and
- 35:13Speaker 2: and whether you get that is going to be in
- 35:16Speaker 2: right in time. Sometimes it doesn't work out. Sometimes it doesn't.
- 35:20Speaker 2: You got a heck of a deal. I'm not the
- 35:23Speaker 2: cheapest guy, but I promise you you're going to be happy
- 35:26Speaker 2: when I leave. And that just doesn't mean with your job.
- 35:30Speaker 2: You know, you're not clean hands and the smiles and
- 35:34Speaker 2: our personality and anybody that I bring onto the crew
- 35:36Speaker 2: is going to treat you like it's their home. And
- 35:40Speaker 2: like I mentioned a little bit before, I have now gone.
- 35:43Speaker 2: I mean We're going to the Rolling Stones with fans.
- 35:45Speaker 2: I'm going to Chicago music usually around music with people,
- 35:49Speaker 2: with people that I didn't know from ahead of time.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Next thing, you know, we're we're best friends. And that's
- 35:56Speaker 2: I'm not tooting my own horn there or anything. I
- 35:59Speaker 2: just think once you can develop that relationship with them,
- 36:02Speaker 2: with homeowners, and it's not always going to be that. Right,
- 36:05Speaker 2: someone's going to pay you via Venmo or something right
- 36:07Speaker 2: off the bed and then they're never going to talk
- 36:08Speaker 2: to you again. Please pass on my name. That's the
- 36:11Speaker 2: main thing. I think. That's six hundred dollars starewell I
- 36:14Speaker 2: did or fill in the blank. Job you did for
- 36:17Speaker 2: them is great right now. But if they don't say, hey,
- 36:22Speaker 2: you know, Pat, Bob's biller did a great job on
- 36:25Speaker 2: this and he bah bah bah, and he was clean
- 36:27Speaker 2: and they were friendly and you'll really like them, then
- 36:29Speaker 2: your business has stopped. That.
- 36:32Speaker 1: I think that's really important. You know, that's really something
- 36:36Speaker 1: that I think a lot of people probably don't think about.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I didn't think about that, and I think it's probably
- 36:41Speaker 1: something super easy that we can do as homeowners because
- 36:45Speaker 1: we've all had you know, I haven't had people come
- 36:47Speaker 1: in paint in the house, because I would do that,
- 36:49Speaker 1: But there's other things where I've had people come in
- 36:52Speaker 1: and I've been so thrilled with the work, you know,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and I thank them immensely. I've sent them a really
- 36:59Speaker 1: nice email, and that's all really good, yep. But what
- 37:02Speaker 1: I could do that's really going to help turn things
- 37:04Speaker 1: around is give their name out exactly.
- 37:06Speaker 2: You know. Obviously you need that money, Okay, you need
- 37:08Speaker 2: you got to pay your bill for that month, but
- 37:10Speaker 2: the bills don't stop coming, your mortgage doesn't stop. I
- 37:13Speaker 2: mean some of you again paid it off, awesome, but
- 37:16Speaker 2: you need a new car three hundred bucks is not
- 37:20Speaker 2: out of the question anymore to go to the grocery store.
- 37:24Speaker 2: You're working for that next suggestion, that that next referral.
