Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch, to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: in to the dirt. On this episode we are talking
- 0:42Speaker 1: about Skip James, Poldergeist in eighties horror movies, dark Tropics
- 0:48Speaker 1: and other Irish rock and roll, and of course your voicemails, texts,
- 0:52Speaker 1: dms and more and as always, a whole lot of rosa.
- 0:56Speaker 2: All right, Discos, let's get into it.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes we are here. I am here,
- 1:17Speaker 1: as you are here, as we are all together, good
- 1:19Speaker 1: people of the earbud Internet. Welcome to another episode of
- 1:22Speaker 1: the after Party. You know the drill, you know the
- 1:24Speaker 1: de Leoh, Skip James, Skip James. Have you heard the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Skip James episode of Disgraceland.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Have you recovered?
- 1:33Speaker 1: Have you? Discos? Have you have you gone to bed
- 1:35Speaker 1: at night wearing a cup maybe all you mail discos
- 1:38Speaker 1: out there, you find yourself sitting cross legged, maybe a
- 1:41Speaker 1: little squeamish. I would be too. I'm not going to
- 1:44Speaker 1: spoil the more cutting parts of this Skip James episode
- 1:48Speaker 1: for those who haven't yet heard it, but I do
- 1:50Speaker 1: want to talk about this episode because it is one
- 1:53Speaker 1: of my favorites. It's definitely the most Dick centric episode
- 1:57Speaker 1: that we've done. But again I don't want to spoil anything.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I will say, however, that in this episode I tried
- 2:03Speaker 1: really hard, in all seriousness, to get across the particular
- 2:08Speaker 1: type of violence that Skip James encountered as a young
- 2:11Speaker 1: man in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Not
- 2:14Speaker 1: just violence, and like I said, a particular type of violence,
- 2:18Speaker 1: but also the lawlessness America back then, especially in the
- 2:22Speaker 1: South around the time of the Depression. It was the
- 2:25Speaker 1: prevailing culture of violence that made well living, surviving, actually,
- 2:30Speaker 1: especially for a black man, incredibly challenging, to say the least.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Skip James, in researching him, in figuring out this character,
- 2:41Speaker 1: struck me as more of a character out of like
- 2:44Speaker 1: an old Sam Peck and Pa Western than he did
- 2:47Speaker 1: a blues musician, though of course he was a blues
- 2:50Speaker 1: and musician, and he was this sort of old timey
- 2:54Speaker 1: tough guy. So I get into all of that in
- 2:58Speaker 1: this episode. And for those of you who who may
- 3:00Speaker 1: or may not have seen me at the Newport Folk
- 3:03Speaker 1: Festival last summer doing this performance with Adam Wiener from
- 3:07Speaker 1: Lo Ka Kani about Skip James and doing this quote
- 3:11Speaker 1: unquote episode, we just really skimmed the surface when we
- 3:15Speaker 1: took this live. Of course, it's a different medium not
- 3:19Speaker 1: able to get under the hood completely with an artist
- 3:23Speaker 1: like I am in the podcast episode. So if you're
- 3:26Speaker 1: looking at this and you're like I saw him do
- 3:29Speaker 1: this at Newport, I'm gonna skip the podcast episode, don't.
- 3:32Speaker 1: You're gonna get a lot more in here, like a
- 3:34Speaker 1: lot more than you got on stage if you were
- 3:38Speaker 1: there at Newport. And yeah, if you see the name
- 3:42Speaker 1: Skip James and your feet and you're like, who the
- 3:43Speaker 1: hell is Skip James and you didn't know who he is,
- 3:45Speaker 1: don't worry about it. Don't worry. You didn't know who
- 3:47Speaker 1: Big Lurch was, did you? And you got a hell
- 3:49Speaker 1: of an episode there, right, So same here, you're getting
- 3:52Speaker 1: an incredible episode, an incredible story that you have not
- 3:55Speaker 1: heard before.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I guarantee it.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And even if you're a blues fan, blues aficionado, so
- 4:01Speaker 1: I like to think that hopefully I got to a
- 4:04Speaker 1: place here with this character that is new and exciting,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and this isn't the story that you would be expecting.
- 4:11Speaker 1: So I invite all of you to listen to the
- 4:14Speaker 1: recent Skip James episode. It is one of my favorites.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I think you're going to dig it, So.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Check that out.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Also in the news of recent releases over in the
- 4:26Speaker 1: bad Lands Feed. That's right, the bad Lands Feed is
- 4:28Speaker 1: starting to cook up again. Go over there and subscribe.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Over in the bad Lands Feed. We just released re released,
- 4:35Speaker 1: i should say, the Poltergeist episode that we had done
- 4:40Speaker 1: for those of you who, like myself, grew up in
- 4:42Speaker 1: the eighties and were glued to cable TV and obsessed
- 4:46Speaker 1: with horror and raunchy comedy for horror. Anyways, the Poulter
- 4:51Speaker 1: guyst episode. Hopefully this is about the Curse of the
- 4:54Speaker 1: Poltergeist movie, which is a really fascinating topic. If you
- 4:57Speaker 1: don't know about this, I invite you to check it out.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Like I said, this is a re release of a
- 5:02Speaker 1: previously released bad Lands episode. We're gearing that feed up
- 5:06Speaker 1: for the May third launch of the New bad Lands season,
- 5:12Speaker 1: so that's coming quick. But this Polar Guys episode, it
- 5:16Speaker 1: really got me thinking, you know, about eighties horror and
- 5:20Speaker 1: how that was.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Such a such a specific.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Time for horror movies, and just even now, it's like
- 5:27Speaker 1: even the bad stuff or the im mediate stuff I
- 5:29Speaker 1: thought was I was kind of interested in as a kid,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but not really.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I love it now.
- 5:34Speaker 1: There's so there's so much great Eighties horror. I'm not
- 5:37Speaker 1: telling anyone anything that they don't know, but there's almost
- 5:42Speaker 1: so much of it.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I don't even know.
- 5:43Speaker 1: How to organize my thinking around it. You know, it's
- 5:46Speaker 1: like where do we go? We go?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Like Friday the thirteenth? Do we go?
- 5:50Speaker 1: Do we go?
- 5:51Speaker 2: Jason Vorhees? Do we go? Do we go?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Lost Boys? Something a little more high concept? Where do
- 5:58Speaker 1: you go? What are the horror movies? I guess is
- 6:00Speaker 1: what I'm asking? What are the eighties horror movies? Give
- 6:02Speaker 1: me five? Give me your top five eighties horror movies.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Does Poulter Guys even make the list?
- 6:09Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Maybe it does. Let me know what your top five are?
- 6:13Speaker 1: I what did I just mention? I mentioned Polter Guys?
- 6:15Speaker 1: I mentioned Friday the Thirteenth Nightmare on Elm Street and
- 6:21Speaker 1: The Lost Boys. I guess i'd throw the Shining in there.
- 6:24Speaker 1: That's nineteen eighty, I believe, if you want to go
- 6:26Speaker 1: totally high brow, and then of course there's all the
- 6:30Speaker 1: sort of the Stephen King stuff that wasn't very good
- 6:32Speaker 1: at the time. What are your top five eighties horror movies?
- 6:35Speaker 2: That's the question.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna quit rambling about that. That is the question,
- 6:39Speaker 1: very directly put, what are your top five eighties horror movies?
- 6:41Speaker 1: Let me know. Hit me up at Disgrace lam pod
- 6:44Speaker 1: on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok. You can also let me
- 6:47Speaker 1: know what you thought of the Skip James episode. There
- 6:49Speaker 1: kind of a horrific story there. If not a horror episode,
- 6:53Speaker 1: definitely horrific. What else we got coming down the pike
- 6:56Speaker 1: here for episodes, We've got Sharon Tate coming in the
- 6:59Speaker 1: Badly Feed, And I mentioned that because those episodes are special,
- 7:04Speaker 1: they're different episodes. We do something different there that we've
- 7:07Speaker 1: done in anything any other episode before. It's our first
- 7:10Speaker 1: real crossover episode. Those Sharon Tate episodes correlate directly with
- 7:15Speaker 1: the Mama Cast episodes of Disgraceland. So those are in
- 7:18Speaker 1: the bad Lands feed the Sharontate episodes and they, like
- 7:20Speaker 1: I said, there is sort of a Roschermont thing happening
- 7:22Speaker 1: there with the Mama Cass Disgraceland episodes. You can check
- 7:25Speaker 1: those out too, all right, So yeah, that's it. That's
- 7:29Speaker 1: what we got in the disgrace Land feed. That's what
- 7:30Speaker 1: we got in the bad Lands feed at disgrace lad pod.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Let me know what your top five eighties horror movies are,
- 7:34Speaker 1: let me know what you thought of the Skip James episode.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And I'm gonna take.
- 7:37Speaker 1: A quick break, get back with some voicemails and some
- 7:41Speaker 1: texts just after this. All right, let's dive into our
- 8:05Speaker 1: ongoing conversation here. You guys know how to get in
- 8:07Speaker 1: touch at Disgraceland Pod on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok
- 8:12Speaker 1: and of course six one seven nine zero six six
- 8:16Speaker 1: six three eight to send me a text or to
- 8:19Speaker 1: leave me a voicemail, just like Lee here from the
- 8:22Speaker 1: four to one two.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, this is Lee from the four one two.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I was just listening to to the for your Lease
- 8:29Speaker 3: to the Guns Rose episode and you're talking about Aerosmith
- 8:34Speaker 3: and I really think we need to have an Aerosmith episode.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I hope that's in the can or at least in
- 8:40Speaker 3: the works. Anyway, have a good one and happy Easter.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Take care of Jake, Bye.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Bye, all right, Lee, thanks for the voicemail. Yes, Aerosmith
- 8:50Speaker 1: Boston's bad Boys.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I hate that term. I can't stand that term.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But uh yeah, Aerosmith a band that I have a
- 8:57Speaker 1: true love hate relationship with.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I fucking hate Arrowsmith sometimes, man, I.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Just do you know the dude and the big Lebowski
- 9:05Speaker 1: and his feelings toward the Eagles. That's that's Arrowsmith for me.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But then again, I love them. I actually listened to
- 9:12Speaker 1: I listened to Pump the other day on purpose. I
- 9:18Speaker 1: don't know why, I think even I did. I even
- 9:20Speaker 1: after that, I went I went permanent vacation, if you
- 9:22Speaker 1: can believe that.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I wanted to hear Ragdoll.
- 9:25Speaker 1: But then sometimes I hear those songs and I just
- 9:27Speaker 1: I fucking loathe them with the power of a thousand
- 9:30Speaker 1: burning suns. I just cannot stand that band sometimes. But
- 9:33Speaker 1: then sometimes I'm just I'm there for it. I don't
- 9:36Speaker 1: know what it is. Maybe it's familiality, maybe it truly
- 9:39Speaker 1: does breed contempt. Growing up in Boston around that band
- 9:42Speaker 1: sort of, I find them to be absolutely hysterical at
- 9:47Speaker 1: times and if not maddening. Anyways, to answer your question
- 9:51Speaker 1: before I ramble on here, they are our smith. Yes,
- 9:55Speaker 1: we have an episode coming up in season twelve, coming
- 9:58Speaker 1: up soon. So there you go, there you Lee, that's
- 10:00Speaker 1: coming your way. All right, let's get into another voicemail here.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna play a voicemail here from Aliyah, who has
- 10:06Speaker 1: called him before. I don't usually give space for the
- 10:10Speaker 1: sort of double call. I guess I do now that
- 10:12Speaker 1: I'm saying this, I'm remembering from a past after a
- 10:14Speaker 1: party episode not too long ago, where I played someone else.
- 10:17Speaker 1: What am I getting out here? Maybe we're getting to
- 10:19Speaker 1: this like long time caller thing here that the radio
- 10:22Speaker 1: jocks have with their listeners. Anyhow, I chose Aliyah's voicemail
- 10:26Speaker 1: here because I remember distinctly the last time I played
- 10:29Speaker 1: her voicemail, I fucked up the pronunciation of her name.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I think I called her Alia. I apologize. So Aliyah,
- 10:36Speaker 1: here you go. Giving me some more space, Let's hear
- 10:39Speaker 1: Aliyah from the six seventy eight has to say, what's up? Jay?
- 10:43Speaker 3: This is Aliyah?
- 10:44Speaker 4: I know I've called him before from the.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Six seventy eight.
- 10:48Speaker 4: I know one of mine made it to the air,
- 10:50Speaker 4: and I don't expect you to read or listen to
- 10:52Speaker 4: this one since I've been on the air, but I do.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Have two really good recommendations that maybe's autos.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Maybe you haven't think.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Your spin on it would be absolutely amazing not to
- 11:03Speaker 4: mention their two incredibly huge musical influences in my life,
- 11:07Speaker 4: at least coming up in the nineties.
- 11:10Speaker 3: I'm gonna say Chris Cornell and Chester betigin both I
- 11:14Speaker 3: know obviously a past and I would.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Just really love to hear them on the podcast once again.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Much love for you, and I can't wait for more episodes.
- 11:22Speaker 1: All right, Eleah, I wanted. I want to get into
- 11:25Speaker 1: Chris Cornell. I want to get into Chester. The suicide stuff, though,
- 11:30Speaker 1: is incredibly heavy, and to be honest, I'm not ready
- 11:34Speaker 1: to do it right now, but I'm sure I will
- 11:36Speaker 1: at some point. I get a lot of requests for
- 11:38Speaker 1: these two episodes. Sorry, these two subjects. Maybe I'll try
- 11:42Speaker 1: to find a way to combine them into one and
- 11:45Speaker 1: just compress all that pain and grief into one thirty
- 11:48Speaker 1: minute shot. Save Myself some heaviness, but yeah, sooner or later.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I wish I had a specific date or season for you,
- 11:58Speaker 1: but I don't. But I appreciate voicemail, and I appreciate
- 12:01Speaker 1: the request. Let's do one more voicemail here. Let's go
- 12:04Speaker 1: with Matt play the eight one to five. Matt from Ohio.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Hey, Jake, what's up? This is Matt calling you from Ohio.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Top five movies. I agreed with most of what you said.
- 12:18Speaker 4: I had good Fellows The Godfather. I also had goodwill
- 12:21Speaker 4: hunting Rocky and Dallas Buyer's Club. Off the top of
- 12:25Speaker 4: my head. Maybe if I did a little more thinking,
- 12:29Speaker 4: some of those numbers could some of those titles could change.
- 12:33Speaker 4: As far as Peak, I remember my brother taking me
- 12:36Speaker 4: to see that movie, and that was probably one of
- 12:39Speaker 4: the first times I've ever watched a movie where I
- 12:41Speaker 4: was actively cheering for the bad guy to win. Robert
- 12:44Speaker 4: de Niro really wanted him to make it.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Anyways, Love you, Love the show Man, Keep doing an
- 12:51Speaker 5: awesome job. Side notes, I just started a new job
- 12:54Speaker 5: a couple of weeks ago, and I'm working with the
- 12:57Speaker 5: guy who has a part time job as a DJ,
- 13:01Speaker 5: and he was at the very show where dine Bag
- 13:04Speaker 5: Daryl was killed like he was like right there, and
- 13:09Speaker 5: that just totally blew my mind.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I literally listen. I think I re listened to that
- 13:14Speaker 4: dine Bag Daryl episode and then found that information out
- 13:18Speaker 4: for my coworker. So anyway, I thought you might might
- 13:21Speaker 4: get a kick out of that. Thanks for everything, Man,
- 13:23Speaker 4: take care of buye awesome.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Thank you, Matt, all right a lot in here. First
- 13:30Speaker 1: of all, solid top five list. We share a very
- 13:32Speaker 1: similar taste on heat. I am also with you. I
- 13:36Speaker 1: was rooting for de Niro in the end as well.
- 13:38Speaker 1: What does that say about us, Matt, I think we're
- 13:40Speaker 1: fucked up rooting for the bad guys, just like that
- 13:42Speaker 1: Henry Hill quote from Goodfellas. Jimmy was the type of
- 13:44Speaker 1: guy who rooted for the bad guys and movies. Yes,
- 13:47Speaker 1: yes he was, And I occasionally find myself rooting for
- 13:49Speaker 1: the bad guys and movies. But he is a special
- 13:52Speaker 1: case because de Niro is the bad guy, but he's
- 13:55Speaker 1: also kind of a good guy, kind of kind at
- 14:00Speaker 1: least the way they set it up. Anyway, Thanks for
- 14:03Speaker 1: calling Matt everyone, Thanks for the messages, thanks for the voicemails,
- 14:06Speaker 1: Thanks for the text. Uh six one seven nine zero
