- 0:09this it makes me cringe. Not because not so much because

- 1:04The rewards are immeasurable. So welcome to Beyond the Facade.
- 1:07Let's get started. All right, everybody.
- 1:11So what we're going to do here is we're going to talk about
- 1:13this. You've already read the title of
- 1:14the episode, so it's the myth of I've told you everything.
- 1:18So just go back to a moment when you, if you're the betrayed
- 1:21partner, your partner says everything's out there,
- 1:23everything's out there and you're just like, oh, it just
- 1:26doesn't feel right. Think about the times that
- 1:28you're like, and you know, if you're the betraying partner,
- 1:31the times that you've been like, everything's out there and
- 1:34you're just so want her to see that and go want your partner to
- 1:41acknowledge that you've shared everything and she's hesitating
- 1:46or they're hesitating. Let me expand on this part,
- 1:49which is it's cringe not because I think the person is lying, but
- 1:55it's because they believe it. And that's the being the problem
- 2:00because at the end of the day, it's it reflects that there's a
- 2:05misunderstanding of like honesty and awareness.
- 2:07So I just want to point out that most people don't realize that
- 2:12they're still trapped in a constructed reality, in
- 2:16something that they've constructed to live in the world
- 2:18that they believe is real. But that version of their story,
- 2:22it feels safe, it feels logical, it feels defensible, but isn't
- 2:27fully true. OK, can I just repeat that
- 2:29again? So.
- 2:31A version of the story that feels safe, logical and
- 2:35defensible, but isn't fully true.
- 2:37So let's tie in what people do so they create realities all the
- 2:42time. All right.
- 2:43So. Denial isn't just like refusing
- 2:47to see something. It's not like I don't want to
- 2:50see that. It's like building an entire
- 2:53world view that keeps you from seeing what reality is, right?
- 2:58We construct it there. It is constructed.
- 3:01So we we all build stories that make sense of our world.
- 3:05That's a human experience, right?
- 3:06Just like step into another culture, step another part of
- 3:10the world, watch it crumble. What you think, you know, just
- 3:13because you step into some, you know, like because diversity
- 3:16happens, because you step into a place where you're like,
- 3:18something is different. The problem is, is when the
- 3:20story becomes like this fortress of I have to believe this, I
- 3:24can't look at anything different.
- 3:27So when we defend that fortress that we've built and we defend
- 3:32that with like selective evidence, like we're looking at
- 3:34things and we're going, OK, this is how I can make sense of this.
- 3:38There's just going to be a bunch of rationalization.
- 3:40There's going to be a bunch of partial truths, right?
- 3:42And we don't have to actually see it.
- 3:44Let's just think of someone who believes something that's
- 3:49clearly not true and then gathers endless evidence to
- 3:54prove it. All right.
- 3:56So. That's not deception, that's
- 3:59devotion to some false narrative.
- 4:02And that's exactly what denial does.
- 4:04I don't know, baby. I don't know how you all feel
- 4:06about this analogy. Maybe I brought it up in a
- 4:08podcast before, but think about a flat earther.
- 4:12There's some really passionate people out there that are like
- 4:16the world's flat, the Earth's flat.
- 4:18And it's like, really, that's what you believe.
- 4:21How? And they can actually provide
- 4:24some evidence or whatever it might be for them to have make
- 4:28sense of it, to believe what they believe.
- 4:30So that's exactly what denial does.
- 4:32What we want to do is we want to name the pattern in our groups,
- 4:36especially phase one and phase two groups, men's groups.
- 4:40We talked about the addictive system at work and please learn
- 4:43about it if you haven't already. It's so important because if we
- 4:46just start focusing on like, the problem is the behavior itself.
- 4:49The problem is the cheating, the problem is the born, the problem
- 4:52is the lying. We don't even tackle What's of
- 4:55the root here, OK? So.
- 4:58Let's zoom on. Zoom in on what's actually
- 5:00happening internally when a person says I told you
- 5:04everything. All right, let's tie it into the
- 5:06addictive system, and specifically the belief
- 5:08structures that come in place. So the addictive system depends
- 5:11on control. What is it trying to control?
- 5:14An image, an emotion, a narrative and an outcome.
- 5:19So. I've told you everything becomes
- 5:21like a control statement. It's like it's not about truth,
- 5:25it's about regaining balance, right?
- 5:28When something fills out of balance, there's the belief
- 5:31that's underneath this. And I'll give you some examples.
- 5:33Actually, I'll give you one example.
- 5:35A belief that might exist that's faulty is, is if I've arrived
- 5:39and now I am in reality, I don't have to keep facing harder
- 5:43truths. And how painful is that?
- 5:45Like that it comes in layers, like every time we think we
- 5:47know, also more face with something new.
- 5:49But if I've arrived and I figured it out, that means I
- 5:52won't face anything new right now.
- 5:53No more surprises in my recovery.
- 5:55No more, no more. Just that feeling of not
- 6:00knowing. So.
- 6:02What somebody might say is, as I've told you everything, but
- 6:05what they're really saying is, is I need this one to be over.
- 6:08I need this to be over. I need to stop feeling like this
- 6:12out of control feeling. But here's the deal, recovery.
- 6:15It's it's not about control. It's about the surrendering
- 6:18process. I mean, how annoying is it like
- 6:2112 step, like surrender, right? It's not annoying.
- 6:24It's just it can feel hard when it's like recognizing that you
- 6:28to let go. I do need to surrender.
- 6:30Let's spend some more time exploring some of these belief
- 6:32systems. If we had a belief
- 6:35infrastructure build on some early messages, maybe in family
- 6:39of origin around power, love, sex, truth, that can really
- 6:44shape our belief system that would cause us to not be able to
- 6:47be in a reality, right? If I believe I'm not enough.
- 6:51If I believe that worth comes from acceptance, comes from a
- 6:56performance, that means I'm going to have to build a
- 6:59infrastructure that supports that.
- 7:00It allows me to be able to stay accepted by people.
- 7:03So. When these beliefs that we have,
- 7:06they're distorted, denial is going to take a lot of root
- 7:09because it's feels safer than reality.
- 7:12And but there's a lot of errors in thinking.
- 7:14So addictive system, belief systems, thinking errors.
- 7:17OK, so that's what we have to follow.
- 7:19A belief system has to prop it up, which is thinking errors.
- 7:22So that's. The scaffolding to this like
- 7:25false self, right, so much of this shift, blame shifting, the
- 7:29rationalization, the minimization, all of it happens
- 7:32because of the thinking errors and I can mop up when I was
- 7:36spilling myself. OK, so let's.
- 7:39Talk about why it's so problematic.
- 7:40You might be like, look, we already talked about why it's
- 7:42problematic, but the illusion is I'm in full awareness, OK?
- 7:47That's what I'm telling my partner.
- 7:49I'm in full awareness. I have nothing to hide from you.
- 7:51I've shared everything. That's impossible, right?
- 7:55Oh my gosh, I get passionate about this.
- 7:57Just stop telling your partner that you're in full awareness.
- 8:01The impossibility of being in full awareness.
- 8:03I'm not in full awareness. I'm not.
- 8:05I hate that I said that way. Like on the benchmark for full
- 8:09awareness, I'm actually trying to illustrate the fact that the
- 8:12full awareness is something that you are working for all the time
- 8:17to try to get there. So recovery, it's progressive.
- 8:21Like it's progressive, it's layered.
- 8:25What did I hear somebody say? It's progressive revelation.
- 8:28Like it builds. Like you can't understand one
- 8:30concept until I understand another concept.
- 8:32I can't be ready for one level of truth until I have a certain
- 8:35level of truth. By the way, I'm all sudden
- 8:38realizing as I'm like speaking, I'm becoming all the sudden
- 8:42aware that I'm not giving. Like if you're a betrayed
- 8:46partner or if you're betraying partner, I'm not giving this
- 8:49pass on. It takes a little while before
- 8:51you can be honest because you're not an awareness.
- 8:53That's not what I'm saying. I'm not saying like the lies
- 8:56that exist. It's just the stop defending the
- 8:59reality. Do you think is actually
- 9:01reality? Phase one of healing is coming
- 9:06out of denial. OK?
- 9:07So early in healing, you don't yet have the capacity to see
- 9:11what's still hidden, right? Because your brain and your
- 9:14nervous system and the shame defenses are they're still
- 9:18protecting it. They're still alive, they're
- 9:19still still hitting. That's I think it's a lot of
- 9:22reason why trickle disclosures happen.
- 9:24I don't think trickle disclosures are all about
- 9:27partners going. I don't want to share all the
- 9:28truth with you as is how much I push that crap down and I don't
- 9:32want to acknowledge it, say anything about it.
- 9:35So. I think that's the process,
- 9:37which is your brain and your nervous system.
- 9:39Your same defenses have to come down to gain access to those
- 9:43parts of our brains that we shut off.
- 9:45OK? So true awareness isn't true
- 9:48awareness grows as like, safety grows.
- 9:51OK, So I have the chance to come into true awareness because all
- 9:54of a sudden they realize I'm safe.
- 9:55Like, I watch guys go through the Full disclosure process.
- 9:57It's amazing. You see them going, I don't know
- 10:00how I can't remember all the details.
- 10:02How am I supposed to remember all this stuff?
- 10:04And you watch them lean into the process and they start to feel
- 10:06safer in ways they didn't even know was possible.
- 10:09As they start to comb through the recesses of the brain and as
- 10:13they and they start to feel safer, even though they're going
- 10:15through all the hard stuff and they're like, oh, wow, this
- 10:18isn't going to kill my relationship.
- 10:20It's scary. Maybe it will, but I'm not
- 10:22feeling the same way I used to about it.
- 10:24So they also they have a level of awareness because safety
- 10:26increases where the safety creases.
- 10:27It came in through leaning of the process.
- 10:30So you can't see what your brain still protecting you from.
- 10:35Can I say that again, you can't see what your brain still
- 10:38protecting you from. That's why humility is like a
- 10:41really essential in this process because it keeps you open to
- 10:44learning what you can't see yet. All.
- 10:47Right, So let's talk about this false safety trap.
- 10:51So saying she, she knows everything provides emotional
- 10:55relief, right? So for him, sometimes even for
- 10:59her temporarily, right? You know, everything's out there
- 11:03that can be a temporary relief for that, right?
- 11:05Some emotional relief. But that relief's built on a lie
- 11:09because it creates that false safety, that sense of stability
- 11:12that is going to collapse later when new truth emerges.
- 11:15That's the part is if I tell you, you know everything, when I
- 11:19come into awareness now I got to defend like that, that what I
- 11:23said earlier, we want to get rid of that.
- 11:26So fault safety, it's kind of like building a house on sand.
- 11:29So it feels like really solid, but it just takes a big wave and
- 11:32it comes knocks it all in and it always does like it always does.
- 11:37So what are you building it on? Here's another piece of this.
- 11:41It's interesting how acknowledging the danger helps
- 11:44your partner. So when you name the reality,
- 11:46which is I don't know everything yet, you actually create some
- 11:49real safety right there and then paradoxically, like
- 11:53acknowledging danger builds trust because it's signals like,
- 11:59like I'm self-awareness, humility.
- 12:01I'm not going to try to tell you everything's going to be OK.
- 12:03I don't know. I'm still working on going
- 12:05through my recovery Suddenly when when you can say that I'm
- 12:08still learning to be honest, building a process to be honest
- 12:12for when you're not what that looks like.
- 12:14That's going to that foundationally, that's going to
- 12:16there's going to be levels of trust that can start to be
- 12:18restored even when you aren't acknowledging the fact that
- 12:21you're never going to make a mistake again because it's not
- 12:23about being perfect. It's about being real and it's
- 12:25about being consistent. That's what provides that level
- 12:29of always forgot the word stability.
- 12:32It's not that security. Security.
- 12:35That's what creates the security is the is that consistency, not
- 12:39perfection. All right, so one more piece of
- 12:42this, one more piece of the why it's so problematic.
- 12:45The illusion of full awareness is that the arrival illusion,
- 12:49thinking that you've made it so believing that you've arrived
- 12:54shuts down our ability to be able to grow.
- 12:55OK, so if I think that I'm in full awareness and that's where
- 13:00I've gone, I'm like, yeah, it's all truth.
- 13:01I'm not going to be looking for evidence that I'm not a full
- 13:04awareness. I'm going to shut that down.
- 13:06So it signals that the learning process isn't over, Like I don't
- 13:09know. So now that's the self no longer
- 13:13needs to examine it, but now I need to examine it because I've
- 13:16acknowledged the fact that I'm not in full awareness.
- 13:19So it's that mindset that breeds like in recovery, like that
- 13:24mindset breeds breeds stagnation and relapse when I think I've
- 13:30arrived. Because the moment you believe
- 13:33that you've arrived, in that moment, you're going to stop
- 13:35growing. And in recovery, when you stop
- 13:38growing, you start sliding back into your old system.
- 13:41All right, last piece of this. So managing outcomes versus
- 13:45living in truth. Let's break the distinction
- 13:48down, OK, Managing outcomes versus living in truth.
- 13:51So managing outcomes, that's what you're doing is controlling
- 13:54perceptions. So like, that's your partner
- 13:57going. That's not the way that I see
- 13:59it. You're like, no, no, no, no, no,
- 14:00no, no. I know what truth is.
- 14:01Let me show you what that truth is.
- 14:03You're managing A perception. I feel like you're hiding
- 14:06something. Nope, not hiding something.
- 14:07Live in my world, doesn't it not like that's controlling
- 14:11perception, that's managing outcomes, trying to get specific
- 14:15results. For example, I need my partner
- 14:17to be calm. I need stability in my
- 14:20relationship. I need this image that I used to
- 14:22have restored. Managing outcomes, living in
- 14:25truth. What is that?
- 14:26That's like being honest, regardless of how it affects
- 14:29outcome. It's so beautiful to watch men
- 14:31do this. I love it.
- 14:32Sorry I keep saying men, women betrayed too.
- 14:36Keep doing that. It's not just a man thing.
- 14:39Managing outcomes is still still about you, the living in truth,
- 14:45being honest, regardless of how that affects your outcomes.
- 14:48So when you let that go, your comfort, your control, your
- 14:52image, living in truth, that's about the integrity.
- 14:55So it's doing what's right, even though it'll cost you something
- 14:59or everything. And that is going to that is the
- 15:05letting go of the illusion of that.
- 15:06I'm in full awareness and there's something has to move
- 15:09there. OK, let me give you, before we
- 15:12start to wrap out this episode, I want to give you some.
- 15:14I want to give you some better alternative, some language that
- 15:17could exist if you're used to defending your reality.
- 15:19OK, let me give you a more practical language that you
- 15:22could use. Again, not a script.
- 15:24Find your version of this, right?
- 15:25Find what your truth is. So it might be something like
- 15:28this. Your partner's asking you all
- 15:29the details and your theme of your messages right now.
- 15:32I've shared with you everything that I'm awareness of, but I
- 15:35know there are parts of my story that I'm still learning to see
- 15:37right now, and I'm committing to the process.
- 15:41I'm not committing to what I think reality is, and it's not
- 15:45because I want to hide anything, but it's because I'm still
- 15:48waking up to myself. Now, I recognize when you say
- 15:51that you're going to put your money where your mouth is.
- 15:53You have to go to your work to come more into awareness, right?
- 15:56You can't just say that and then you weaponize it.
- 15:59If you just say that and don't do anything, your weaponizing
- 16:02and your partner calm down because it sounds like a good
- 16:04thing to say. I just want to encourage you
- 16:06keep bringing those new insights forward.
- 16:08I'll let awareness deepen. We're going to practice
- 16:11curiosity. Why am I still holding that?
- 16:14What am I blind to? And get it just super involved
- 16:18with people that are feel safe, that can challenge your thinking
- 16:23that can you feel like really value you care about you
- 16:27mentors, therapists. Coaches.
- 16:32Other group members that give you feedback about your blind
- 16:34spots, they know they care about you, but don't sugarcoat
- 16:38anything for you. They care enough about you to
- 16:40not do that. They challenge your reality.
- 16:43So anyway, just appreciate you spending some time with me.
- 16:47The invitation is the myth that I've told you everything.
- 16:50It's not actually about so much the being dishonest.
- 16:53It's about that misunderstanding that what honesty really is.
- 16:58But true telling, it's not like that finish line, but it's that
- 17:01way we live. It's that way of life and it's
- 17:04how we live in humility and we keep growing and we rebuild
- 17:08trust to like one layer at a time.
- 17:10Just ask yourself right now, like what parts of my story, my
- 17:15what am I still holding on to? What do I still need to believe?
- 17:20That was a strong feeling. What do I, what I still need to
- 17:23believe? What can I look at right now?
- 17:27Let's look at it as a layer of truth and just watch what
- 17:33happens. Watch what happens when you you
- 17:39share that next layer of truth and you see what happens.
- 17:44See what sets you free. All right, let's go spend time
- 17:47with y'all. Hey, thanks for joining us
- 17:51today. If this is something.
