- 0:05Speaker 1: Noah's Ark by David Cory, Chapter eleven, The Picnic. Don't
- 0:11Speaker 1: leave me alone on the ark, Margie, dear, for I
- 0:14Speaker 1: shall be lonely. I very much fear. Now, how would
- 0:17Speaker 1: you like to be left alone? High up on a
- 0:20Speaker 1: perch where the wild breeze is moan? The weathercock wants
- 0:24Speaker 1: to come with us, said Marjorie. Then why doesn't he?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Said Captain Noah, who was busily engaged in making the
- 0:31Speaker 1: anchor line fast. I'll tell him to come with us.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And she ran up to the gangplank and called to
- 0:38Speaker 1: the lonely weathercock, why don't you fly down? We'd like
- 0:42Speaker 1: to have you come ashore with us. That's all I
- 0:45Speaker 1: wanted to know, said the faithful bird. Look out here
- 0:49Speaker 1: she goes, And with a great flutter and flapping of
- 0:53Speaker 1: his gilt wings, he landed on the sand. And after
- 0:57Speaker 1: that he and Marjorie went over to the clump of
- 1:00Speaker 1: palm trees where Missus Noah and the boys were resting.
- 1:04Speaker 1: This would be a fine spot for a picnic, she said,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Did you ever go to one? No, I've never been
- 1:12Speaker 1: to one, although I once went to affair with father,
- 1:15Speaker 1: said Marjorie. Well, while the boys are busy with Captain
- 1:19Speaker 1: Noah mending the ark, we'll get a fire started and
- 1:22Speaker 1: have our lunch out here beneath the trees. It didn't
- 1:26Speaker 1: take long to get the fire started, for Missus Noah
- 1:29Speaker 1: wished to surprise the captain when he came back. And
- 1:32Speaker 1: pretty soon the kettle was singing away hooray for the
- 1:36Speaker 1: jolly picnic, and the crew of the Red Noah's Ark,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I'll whistle and sing like a bird in the spring
- 1:42Speaker 1: while the red flames gleam and spark. There are some
- 1:46Speaker 1: nice clams on the beach, said Missus Noah. So the
- 1:50Speaker 1: weathercock took a basket and went down to the water's
- 1:53Speaker 1: edge and brought back enough for everybody. And I guess
- 1:57Speaker 1: Missus Noah had been to many a clam bake, for
- 2:00Speaker 1: she knew just how to roast them, and a pile
- 2:02Speaker 1: of seaweed and red hot stones. Well, pretty soon Captain Noah,
- 2:08Speaker 1: with mister Jonah and the three boys came out of
- 2:11Speaker 1: the ark and sat down beneath the palm trees. And
- 2:14Speaker 1: then all the animals sat around in a ring, for
- 2:17Speaker 1: this was the first picnic they had ever been to.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I'm as hungry as a bear, said little Margery, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: then the elephant began to laugh, But the bear only
- 2:28Speaker 1: smiled and spread his bread with honey. Of course, some
- 2:32Speaker 1: of the animals didn't eat any of Missus Noah's lunch.
- 2:36Speaker 1: The giraffe stood near by and ate the tender leaves
- 2:39Speaker 1: off the tops of the trees, and the monkeys ate cocoanuts,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and the ducks and geese kept close to the water
- 2:47Speaker 1: and snapped up little fishes and snails. But everybody had
- 2:51Speaker 1: a wonderful time, I think, mother, said Captain Noah, wiping
- 2:56Speaker 1: the crumbs from the tablecloth and holding them out to
- 2:59Speaker 1: a little brown threat brush who had sat on his
- 3:01Speaker 1: shoulder during the meal. We had better spend the night ashore.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I'll bring the big tent from the ark and set
- 3:07Speaker 1: it up under the trees. I'm going to do a
- 3:10Speaker 1: little painting inside the ark this afternoon. That's a very
- 3:14Speaker 1: good idea, said Missus Noah. When the tent was set
- 3:18Speaker 1: up and the ropes securely fastened to the pigs which
- 3:21Speaker 1: had been driven into the ground, Missus Noah and Marjorie
- 3:25Speaker 1: busied themselves fixing it up inside in order to make
- 3:29Speaker 1: it comfortable for the night. And when evening came, a
- 3:32Speaker 1: bright fire was lighted, and after supper everybody sat around
- 3:37Speaker 1: and talked. Ham popped corn, and Marjorie roasted apples. Nine o'clock,
- 3:42Speaker 1: said Captain Noah. Time for bed. We must be up
- 3:47Speaker 1: early in the morning. It was the loveliest picnic I've
- 3:51Speaker 1: ever had, said Marjorie as she kissed Missus Noah good night.
