- 0:30- Welcome everyone,
- 0:31to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:33I'm Mariah Mohammed Ry
- 0:34and moderator with Becker's Healthcare.
- 0:36I'm absolutely thrilled to have with me today,
- 0:38Dr. Day Chung, president and CMO at Children's Health
- 0:43and UT Southwestern Joint Pediatric Enterprise.
- 0:46Doctor, it's very nice
- 0:47to have you on the podcast today. How are you
- 0:50- Doing Great. Uh, thanks for having me.
- 0:52- Yeah, of course. Very excited to talk with you today.
- 0:55Uh, and to get us started,
- 0:56would you mind please introducing yourself
- 0:58and telling us a bit about your background?
- 1:00- Yes, I'd be happy to.
- 1:02Um, I'm a passionate, uh, academic pediatric surgeon,
- 1:06so I brought on little babies and children
- 1:09and a physician executive in Dallas, Texas, uh,
- 1:12with more than 25 years of clinical
- 1:14and leadership experience.
- 1:16So my role currently I am, um, serving as the President
- 1:20and Chief Medical Officer for Children's Health
- 1:22and UT Southwestern's Joint Pediatric Enterprise.
- 1:26We affectionately prefer to as JPE, uh, around here.
- 1:31And I just, uh, completed serving as a surgeon
- 1:34and chief at Children's Medical Center at Dallas
- 1:37and Plano Campus for several years.
- 1:40And, uh, and I remain as the, uh, uh, academic, uh, uh,
- 1:44professor of surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
- 1:48So through the JPE as I mentioned, we have
- 1:53combined our respective expertise to collaborate and,
- 1:57and advance our pediatric patient care research teaching
- 2:02and certainly community outreach.
- 2:04And, and our goal is to really transform the lives
- 2:06of our region's children's for the better.
- 2:09So my current role, I'm responsible for
- 2:13strengthening our clinical operations
- 2:15and fostering a stronger partnership across the JPE
- 2:20and throughout the, uh, certainly, uh, uh, region and at DFW
- 2:23and North Texas communities.
- 2:25So I work closely with leaders at the Children's Health
- 2:29and UT Southwestern Medical Group practice to develop
- 2:33and execute strategies to
- 2:36operationalizing across all spectrum of pediatric, uh,
- 2:40practices and service lines with the, really the goal always
- 2:44to improve the overall patient care, being mindful of
- 2:49cost and highly being efficient
- 2:51and deliver the, you know, easy access for patients
- 2:54and our, one of the fastest, if not the fastest,
- 2:57rapidly growing North Texas pediatric population.
- 3:01And lastly, I'm a, uh, native Texan who went
- 3:04to high school here some like years ago.
- 3:08And, uh, I'm proud to, uh, elevate care
- 3:11for children in the region and help shape the next
- 3:13generation pediatric surgeons.
- 3:15So those are a few, uh, uh, sort
- 3:18of points I wanted to share with you.
- 3:20- Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much for sharing.
- 3:22So with all your experience that you just talked about, um,
- 3:26and what you're currently doing now,
- 3:28can you tell me about your most successful project
- 3:30or initiative from the last year?
- 3:32Uh, what, what issues were you trying to solve
- 3:35and also what drove the success?
- 3:37- Yeah, no, happy to share.
- 3:39I'd say I think that one of the several things,
- 3:42obviously major initiative,
- 3:43but one thing that we've really put a lot
- 3:45of emphasis in the highlight is, uh,
- 3:47recent innovation initiative that we've launched
- 3:49to help lead our organization
- 3:51to be ranked the best children's hospital in north Texas
- 3:55by US News and World Report.
- 3:57And with those ranking, uh, it,
- 3:59it isn't about just getting ranked
- 4:01and recognized it, it's really about having infrastructure
- 4:05and resources and foundation, uh, key elements
- 4:09and support to make sure we are delivering the best possible
- 4:13care for all patient that we, uh, see.
- 4:16And, and, and it does take a whole truly a team effort.
- 4:20So for example, I mean our
- 4:22significant efforts in pediatric mental health crisis
- 4:25and that really just, we've done some great, great work
- 4:27to serve the community
- 4:28and so many kids in teenagers that are in great, uh,
- 4:32need of our health.
- 4:34So we recently released in our 2023 beyond a b,
- 4:37c report from Children's Health and,
- 4:39and, um, detailed the, the current state of mental health
- 4:43of children in north Texas
- 4:44and how we as an organization are, are doing about
- 4:47and as well as what really as, uh, uh, as a community, uh,
- 4:51in a medical community that we need to be doing far more.
- 4:54So that's some of the couple examples that I wanted
- 4:57to highlight.
- 4:58And then lastly, we, we've got some great, uh, expansions,
- 5:02uh, in our Plano campus,
- 5:04which is about 20 miles north of Dallas campus.
- 5:07There's, uh, if you were to drive
- 5:09by in this neighborhood in Texas, I mean,
- 5:11there are just cranes and building expansions
- 5:14and near completion.
- 5:16So we're excited to have a, um,
- 5:19really a anticipated new tower opening in the fourth
- 5:23quarter of 2024.
- 5:24So lots of, lots of work underway in anticipation of, uh,
- 5:29opening up so many more beds to serve the community
- 5:31and needs in northern market as well as Plano.
- 5:35And then we last year launched a, uh,
- 5:38multi-specialty ambulatory clinic and Prosper Texas.
- 5:42So that again, to go
- 5:43and be closer to families home to deliver highly
- 5:48specialized expertise and, uh, care.
- 5:52Uh, it's been a great, great, uh,
- 5:54um, offering to the community.
- 5:55So we're really proud of that.
- 5:57Um, so there was a couple examples of, uh,
- 5:59a couple successful projects that we have come undertaken
- 6:03and come to, uh, see to fruition last year.
- 6:07- Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much
- 6:08for giving us that insight.
- 6:10Definitely sounds like you
- 6:11and the organization has been busy for this year.
- 6:15Um, the clinical workforce has changed a lot in the last few
- 6:18years as I know you are aware of.
- 6:20What challenges are you still facing
- 6:22and how do you see the clinical workforce evolving?
- 6:25- Yeah, I think pandemic, uh, has changed lots
- 6:28of stuff across all enterprises
- 6:31and hospital across the country.
- 6:33There's several, um, variables and compounding factors,
- 6:37but I think one of those most important areas
- 6:39that we put a lot of focus and emphasis
- 6:42and resources to burnout and wellness are care providers.
- 6:47It is really important is equally as we're taking care
- 6:49of more complex and complicated
- 6:52and sicker patients, we have to make sure
- 6:54that our team members are healthy
- 6:57and we have resources to support
- 6:59with all very difficult work they're doing day in,
- 7:02day out, frontline.
- 7:03So Children's Health as an employee
- 7:05of choice has taken a number of steps to support our staff
- 7:09employees positions, uh, overall wellbeing
- 7:12through a comprehensive benefits program
- 7:15and nurturing the environment and supporting our goals
- 7:18and empowering them to reach full potential, both work
- 7:21as well as in basically outside personal lives as well.
- 7:25I mean, we, we've done really some incredibly innovative
- 7:29and, uh, a resource enrich, um, offerings
- 7:34to supporting our staff work-life balance is
- 7:38so, so important.
- 7:39Healthcare delivering healthcare has changed
- 7:42substantially since the covid.
- 7:44And so we, we wanna make sure that we, we go far and above
- 7:47and beyond to make, take care of our team members.
- 7:50'cause without healthy minds
- 7:53and healthy, um, approached by our team members, we,
- 7:56we we're not in any, um, a good position to be able
- 7:59to really take care of some
- 8:01of the most complicated complex patients
- 8:03that we're dealing with every day.
- 8:07- Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much for sharing.
- 8:10And Doctor, before I let you go, the last thing I wanted
- 8:12to ask you is, do you have any advice
- 8:14for aspiring physician nurse leaders?
- 8:18- Oh, I have many, but I I'll share just a couple.
- 8:21I think the key is communication and collaboration.
- 8:25You have to engage at the end of day healthcare.
- 8:29Delivering patient care is,
- 8:32is all about team work and team effort.
- 8:35So I say collaboration is the key to get the absolute best
- 8:40and maximum result that really relies on various expertise,
- 8:43uh, the team around myself or any members of the team.
- 8:48And so that we all compliment each other.
- 8:51So I think as a great leader
- 8:52or a good leader, it is about recognizing
- 8:55that it's all about your team members
- 8:57that are really working together to deliver the care
- 9:00in a very coordinated and organized and supportive fashion.
- 9:04So I think that is really, really important, uh, advice
- 9:07that I would have for aspiring physician
- 9:09and or nursing leaders.
- 9:10And with that is I just elaborated just stay healthy, uh,
- 9:15healthy body, healthy mind.
- 9:17I mean all that goes along.
- 9:18I mean, I think that we have to really take care
- 9:20of each other in order for us
- 9:21to better take care of our patients.
- 9:23So I would say that's the, that's the advice that I have
- 9:25for aspiring physicians and nurse leaders.
- 9:29- Wonderful. Well, thank you so much
- 9:30for those spinal thoughts, doctor.
- 9:32There's definitely been an amazing
- 9:33and informative discussion today.
